one of my friends sent a pic from when we were all in the high school GSA (which we rebranded as “Pride Alliance” to include the gendies) and i am once again reminded that the year after we graduated it was changed by the teacher overseer to a general “pride” club for everyone proud of their sexuality, gender, race OR religion and was promptly dismantled because it was flooded with homophobic christians

This happens in places that are supposedly secular but used to be ran by the catholic church, like so called Canada.
Do you remember when we tried to get crucifix out of government buildings ? Lol yeah. Secular with crucifixes in governement buildings.
You know a lot of American anti-atheist sentiment derives directly from atheist organizations fighting Christian hegemony, right? Like the number one reason atheists are stereotyped as “angry evangelical atheists” isn’t because some people are annoying on reddit, it’s because atheists and atheist organizations are constantly suing cities and schools and companies to get them to stop shoving their religion in everyone’s face and people fucking hate us for it.
You would not believe how hard atheists have to fight to get city councils to stop opening meetings with Christian prayer, to stop high school sports events and graduations from including Christian imagery, to stop companies from coercing their employees into Christian prayers, to get towns to remove crosses from their town crests, to get government buildings and courthouses to take down their Christian monuments. Atheists have been fighting this fight constantly for decades.
And the reaction is always, always, incredibly vitriolic hatred and death threats from every conceivable quarter, including otherwise progressive and liberal people. I’ve seen high school students called “evil” by their own state senators for trying to get prayer removed from their public school. I’ve seen city council members get death and rape threats for giving humanist invocations in place of prayer. It is always framed as “those angry atheists trying to force their atheism on everyone else”. It is always framed as “overly sensitive atheists getting angry if anyone even mentions religion”. It is always framed as “atheists who can’t just let people live their lives”.
If atheists are vocal about fighting religious hegemony, then we’re angry bitter militant evangelical atheists. If we’re not, we’re cultural Christians who are supporting Christian hegemony. It can’t be both, so which is it?

shoutout to nonbinary/agender/otherwise gender nonconforming people who choose to wear cultural clothing typically associated with a certain gender!
jews who wear kippot, muslims who wear hijabs and burqas and niqābs and jilbābs and kimars, sihks who wear turbans, just to name a few!
whether you're wearing these because you have a connection to the gender associated with the article of clothing, or if you wear them because you want to challenge gender roles, or if youre just used to wearing them and don't think your gender should stop you from continuing, or any other reason, i think you all rule!!! im actually a nonbinary jew who wears kippot :] rock on!
and to those who are forced to wear these things, i hope one day you all are in a place where you can have the freedom of choice

Sihkism is a truly beautiful religion.
https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTRneNneB/
(Someone had already asked about disabled people who can't sit on the floor, and they do provide tables and chairs for those that can't sit on the floor.)
Anyways I just wanted to share this because sihks are often targeted due to Islamphobia (is that the word? Idk, man I just woke up)

You know, as a Latino, seeing Space Seed & seeing how they tried to pass Khan off as a Sihk is kinda funny because from the moment he opened his mouth I was like... That is an accent of someone from Latin america not Asia! But I wonder if the audience in the 60s when this aired could even tell the difference lol because it is obvious this man is not Asian.

The Bollywood Lovers' Club Review
This book absolutely wrecked me (affectionate)
4/5 Stars!!!!!!!
Amrita Sidhu moves away from her home in California, leaving behind a community and extended family where she knows who she is. Her new home in Ohio is cold and lonely but at least she has a couple of classes with Dave Gill, who is sweet and funny and awkward and Mormon. Amrita is Sihk and is not supposed to be dating anybody, certainly not a Mormon kid that her family doesn't even know. Dave is already struggling with how to tell his parents he won't be going to college like they expected, and he's still undecided on a mission. Falling for a girl outside his religion just adds another secret into his life.
This book centers around religion, faith, family expectation, and personal goals. I wish I'd had this kind of book to read growing up. For once I felt like my high school experience was accurately portrayed.
Spoilers under the cut
1. Well written - 5 Stars
Admittedly, you could probably find flaws in the plot if you looked. It's a High School Romance. Some things are cheesy or happen too fast or whatever, but personally I found the story and writing style engaging, realistic, relatable, and anxiety inducing at time.
2. Fun level - 5 Stars!
I love to read, but it's not often a book can hold my undivided attention for 4 hours straight. This book did. Every time I picked it up I felt myself sucked into Dave and Amrita's world. It might not be everyone's cup of tea (it IS a high school realistic fiction novel. No magic or spaceships) but I was entertained the whole way through.
3. Complex faith - 5 Stars
This is my favorite representation of Mormon life that I have EVER seen. It is exactly the kind of book I am looking for in this project. Dave is Mormon. He goes to early morning seminary and helps out in his ward. He loves his faith but he's also not afraid to ask questions about how things pertain to him personally. He grapples with his faith, and with what people have told him to do, before coming to his own conclusions.
Importantly, Amrita's religion is portrayed just as complexly throughout the book. And neither Dave nor Amrita ever consider giving up their faiths or converting or anything. I appreciated that they included Dave's grandfather, who converted to Mormonism from Sihkism, and explored how Dave feels this disconnect when he visits the gurdwara, like it's a place he should belong, but doesn't.
This book treats religion as a mixture of personal beliefs, family tradition, and community belonging, which is how I feel about my religion.
4. Homophobia scale - 2.5
Absolutely no mention of queerness at all. So it just gets the most medium score. There was no preaching but no gay people.
5. Mormon weird - 2
We had Dave explaining his green jello video project at one point, and a portrayal of Mormon wedding reception in the church gym (someone in Dave's ward at the beginning of the book). But overall it was light on the things that make Mormonism unique. Which I think worked for the story it was telling but does get it a low score in this area. It made me feel all the more represented for that I think.
6. Diversity of characters - 4
There are only like, two white girls in the whole story. Everybody else is Punjabi/Indian. Although that's really just one demographic, I am giving it a high score here because of how much it showed of Punjabi culture, and how much respect and honor those traditions were shown by the narrative. It wasn't just a ton of token characters, it was genuinely working to share a kind of story that doesn't always get told.
7. Other problematic stuff - 5
Didn't notice anything more of note.
Conclusion:
This is the kind of story I wish I had been able to read in high school. This is the kind of book I could recommend to someone as just, genuinely a good story and also it includes mormons. And Mormons done well! I feel like a lot of Mormon media I've seen focused a lot at making fun of ourselves, and I love that this book doesn't do that at all.
The end was heartbreaking. But I like that it allowed each character their choice, and it gave honor to prioritizing something other than romantic love.

At my second job, retelling a story of a co-worker who sneered "All those Sihks! They all got those names like Jovinder and Barvinder and Parvinder! They're all the same!"
And I replied "Wow! I'll go tell Brandy, Andy, Sandy, Mandy, Randy, and Candy!"
Went right over his head.

This whole FIA white nonsense reminds me of Quebec when they banned religious symbols for public places and government workers, but said the Roman Catholic cross was okay because it was a historic and cultural symbol and totally not French Catholocism at allllll... Basically, it was a dog whistle and code for we don't want Sihks, Muslim women with hijabs/burqas, etc in the public service.

What’s the problem you need advice on?
Long post ahead !!!!
Okay so I have this friend who is Caucasian, she lives in Northern Canada, she’s born and raised there. I moved there two years ago. I’ve struggled to meet people like me, a black Canadian who grew up in the city, the Greater Toronto Area primarily where there are people who come from various cultures, races and religion.
Me moving to northern Canada, I’m around primarily the opposite of people in the GTA, it’s primarily Caucasian people who are atheist and aren’t use to being around a lot of cultured people especially closely
So my one Caucasian friend here who I’ve actually vibed with and I hang out with has said a couple of off thé wall’s remarks. She always talks negatively of black men and would say she would never date them, I asked her why and she doesn’t have a reason. So I’m like k fine you can have your preference. So the other day she was ok the phone and saw this albino African girl on tik tok and her initial reaction was to me, "Ew , why does she look like that!" She said that as she was quiet shocked to see an albino person , i responded, " what? What is wrong" as I’m looking at the girl she’s showing me. She responds back saying " why does she look like that? It looks weird and gross". I respond telling me "friend" That there’s nothing wrong with her, she’s just albino. So long story short she’s saying she didn’t know that African people can be albino and I’m here educating her that any one from any race can be alino.
Now fast forward to today, we’re watching a show together and someone is getting married and they’re praying as a group before the wedding, her initial response is " god I fucking hate bible thumping Christians" but she lowers her voice as it comes out her mouth because she then remember that I’m Christian, she then asks me if I am and I say yes I am, she proceeds to say "but you’re not catholic right?"
So this is my dilemma, I’m sorry but what the actual fuck!!!!!!!!!!! Regardless if I’m Catholic not that comment was not okay. So she thinks it’s okay to disrespect peoples religions ? The way I’m feeling is that, if I’m not Muslim, sihk, Buddhist or practice any other religion, it’s okay for her to bash it ?
I wanna cut her off… what should I do ? Help

When people were hating on muslims after 9/11 this was basically what sihks did, if someone mistakes them for a muslim derisively they dont correct them they just deescalate the situation
Interesting note: by religious requirement sihks are always armed, they are mandalorians fr
