Just read your recent prompt about Quincey and Shrike! And I loved it! I wanted to know if there was a power imbalance in the relationship between the two of them, considering Shrike is a god. Do they really like Quincey? Or is there something more sinister behind it all?

had to drop everything to answer this because wow am i pathetic about them.

okay so power? it's complicated. shrike is a god, but any influence they had is centuries old. in fact, when they first met shrike had nothing but a crumbling temple and a few skeletons for company. and what shrike is capable of is mostly unknown. and honestly that is also little. they're weak, they're drained, they're falling apart. and for reasons that are spoilers, quincey does give them power. but still a small amount. quincey himself has been raised to think incredibly highly of witches, so he is also a bit arrogant when it comes to gods.

their relationship stems from loneliness and greed, and the fact that they are there. and even if it's under forced circumstances they're staying.

there is also a lot of manipulation, on both their ends. they both have things they want out of the relationship that is not considered healthy but boils down to complete reliance and possession of each other.

quincey can leave, quincey provides food for shrike, and shrike can not leave, but they can provide safety and even home. which, to me, makes their power dynamics incredibly complicated, and not really a case of one person continually having influence over the other.

but they do genuinely love each other. i speak a lot about quincey, and it might be easier to extrapolate his feelings, so---shrike adores quincey. shrike believes quincey is fascinating and beautiful and a reason. quincey stays, quincey expresses free will, quincey fights back, quincey serves them, quincey is perfect and feels like fate. and shrike would do anything for him, as long he remains shrike's.

their love isn't healthy, but it is mutual. they want to own each other and be owned. they want to protect each other to the point of burning down the world, and that's the crux of their relationship.

Something I think about not a lot but also a lot is Henry and my s/i Shrike. And I think a lot about how Shrike has lots of shut downs and is semi-verbal and it's a weird thing for Henry because the twins weren't like that, but he's also very attentive to his kids and so, sometimes he'll sit and instead of forcing Shrike to talk, Henry will pick a stuffed animal and talk to it, for Shrike. "Well, Mr. Flops, Shrike's feeling pretty down I take it! Do you know what's wrong? Does he want to talk about it? Or do you?" and sometimes it's enough to get Shrike to talk, and other times it isn't, and sometimes Shrike will answer back in third person, as the plush. "Shrike told me he feels frustrated and sad. And it's too loud and he's confused about what's happening." and Henry does his best to adapt to however Shrike shows he wants help/comfort. And. Idk. it's just comforting

Pet peeve in Star Wars fics: when some rando whips out force suppressing cuffs like that's something that you could just buy at the closest Bounty Hunters R Us

I recognize that it's for convenient fic purposes, but you know how rare Jedi are overall? You know how radically unlikely (and expensive!) it is for that sort of thing to be mass produced?

Honestly, Force-suppressing drugs are more common in the actual Star Wars canon than cuffs. They've just got a lot more side effects and aren't as sexy as cuffs I guess

Finally touched traditional art (my drawing tablet pen is fucked up so I need to order a new one) and wow okay this shit kinda eats.

Rattus (Left) and Keselyu (Right) are both Dydil: an alien species I made for the 2003 XBOX game Brute Force. They're a hybrid of Opossum and Shrike (alien species found in game).

Rattus is my Sona for this game and acts as the Ithonian ambassador in F.O.R.C.E. (Ithos being their honeplanet), and Keselyu is a bounty hunter character that belongs to my friend @worrmgutssss !

I have been in a reading slump for years with only one or two books every six or so months being able to pull me out of it for a short time BUT IF SHRIKE IS JUST AS AWESOME OR EVEN MORE SO IN THE BOOKS AS HE WAS IN THE MOVIE I WILL READ ALL OF THE MORTAL ENGINES BOOKS RIGHT NOW

-The current designs for JJ and Shrike, as I once again tweak this damn AU for the 12th time.

-After the Joker incident. Tim refuses to take back the Robin mantle. He feels he doesn't deserve it, which is why he re brands himself as the new hero, Shrike.

-Tim and JJ do not communicate with each other at all. JJ is more of a force of nature than a fully fleshed personalty since he has only has one driving desire, to keep Tim safe no matter what.

-When JJ takes over, Tim's subconscious is essentially smothered, making him a silent spectator to JJ's actions. Tim is also both mentally and physically numb to what is happening, having no real desire to take back control. Because of this, Tim unfortunately remembers everything JJ has done and feels guilty beyond belief.

-Thankfully though, there are some rules JJ will not break. He will not harm his family, friends, or any innocent people, everyone else however needs to very, very careful. JJ has no problem with using extreme violence, like the time he severed all the fingers off of one deranged kidnapper he came across.

-Tim keeps JJ on a VERY tight leash and does get a warning if JJ is close to taking over. Tim can hear the other's laughter in his head, getting louder and louder the closer he is to the surface.

-Tim HATES JJ. He would much love to rip that thing out of himself and be rid of it, but Tim knows it's not that easy or simple. JJ meanwhile doesn't care that Tim hates him, in fact, it amuses him.
