Monday, February 3: CJSS, “Hell on Earth”
David T. Chastain certainly kept himself busy in the mid ‘80s, maintaining his namesake and flagship band while also putting together what amounted to a companion group with other Ohio locals: CJSS (Chastain Jinkens Skimmerhorn Sharp) worked the same trad metal beats as David’s primary group, with Russell Jinkens being the primary differentiator due to his not being Leather Leone. Indeed, “Hell on Earth” would’ve fit easily on pretty much any Chastain record- it was fast, over the top and shredtastic, and even if Jinkens didn’t sound like Leone for obvious reasons, his wailing mined similar territory.  And just like Chastain, CJSS was ‘80s metal to the point of self-parody, but they were proudly waving the flag and keeping the music alive in the trenches, and “Hell on Earth” banged with vigor and fury.

Does everyone know about Leo? Leo makes metal covers of pop music. But even if you don’t like metal, his musicianship, audio engineering, and production skills are something to behold.
He sings, drums, plays bass, along with his shredtastic guitar playing. He also stars in all the videos, does his own lighting design, camerawork, and edits them. Sometimes he even does puppetry.
I don’t know if I seen someone wear so many hats for a YouTube channel. And be an expert at wearing most of those hats to boot.

It’s Officially December So Here Are Two New Christmas Covers From August Burns Red And Creeper
Tumblr media
Do you smell that? No, not your roommate’s disgusting Thanksgiving leftovers. No, not the sweat dripping off your neighbor’s back as they attempt to hang holiday lights. Instead, we’re talking about the smell of chestnuts roasting on an open fire because, you know, it’s almost Christmas!
And with it almost being Christmas, you know what that means for our music community: Christmas covers! Yep, that’s right, today both August Burns Red and Creeper have delighted fans with the sounds of two very well-known Christmas songs.
Keeping up their yearly tradition of releasing some sort of Santa-friendly rendition, this year, August Burns Red has decided to cover Wham!’s classic  “Last Christmas.”
"This year I sat down with the intention of writing something upbeat, melodic and shredtastic," says ABR bassist Dustin Davidson. "When I decided to cover 'Last Christmas,' I kept in mind that most people only know the chorus of the song. I didn't want to recreate something word for word, or note by note, so I took the main hook and built a bunch of original ideas around it. The lyrics to Wham!'s 'Last Christmas' are very sad, so if you're feeling lonely this holiday season, I hope this cover finds you well."
As for the UK pop-punk outfit Creeper, off their forthcoming Christmas EP, they have just released a cover of The Pogues’ “Fairytale Of New York.”
“Ever since we were kids, ‘Fairytale of New York’ has always been our favourite Christmas song,” shares the band. “Shane MacGowan and Kirsty MacColl trading insults in the lyrics and the overall sad tone of the song always appealed to us. Having both male and female vocalists, we’ve wanted to cover it for sometime but every Christmas we seemed to be on tour. This year however, we luckily had a gap we could squeeze it into. Alongside this, we had time to also put together ‘Blue Christmas’ and even our own song too. The three songs form something of a miserable Christmas EP which will be released digitally on December 8.”
To check out both August Burns Red and Creeper’s new Christmas classics, be sure to look below.

J’s Jams - September 17, 2018
This week I’m listening to new tunes from The Marias, Isaac Lewis, Mellow Fellow & Ruru, Beach Goons, and HOAX
~~~
Clueless - The Marias
Yes I know it’s another Marias song... They’re just so good, they’re definitely one of my go to bands right now, and they should be one of yours too. But back to the song... Clueless, that’s me on Mondays, “I can’t take this shit no more baby” - also me on Mondays, and the first line of the song. This is the Monday song, it’s very chill, it’s jazzy, it’s a good way to start the week. Give it a listen.
It’s Okay to Dream - Mellow Fellow & Ruru
What’s a more mellow name, Mellow Fellow or Ruru?
That’s the song right there, its floooooowin, its like floating on a lazy river on a summer night with an aurora borealis over head. check it out, tell me I’m wrong, I dare you
Tumblr media
Easy Minded - Isaac Lewis
Explicit auto-tune, in an alternative rock song, is that allowed? Apparently so. This song fucking rocks. I don’t care what anyone says, it’s officially allowed now. Isaac Lewis, man, breaking down barriers. Besides, the auto-tune only makes a very brief appearance at the end of the song.
This is my favorite song right now, if you listen to any song from this list make it this one. Lewis’s deep, calm, voice is the perfect contrast to the relatively fast paced drum beat. Besides the autotune he also has a great range, hitting the high notes when he needs to. There’s also a shredtastic guitar solo that isn’t annoyingly long. This song honestly has it all.
Tumblr media
Wondering - Arlie
This song is addressing someone who has lost access to their cell phone, it’s pretty condescending but alas, it’s catchy. Arlie are certainly a band to watch right now, they did Bonnaroo for the first time this past June, and they’re currently doing a tour through the United States, even appearing with Mt. Joy for a few shows between September 25 and October 4.
Tumblr media
Moon Moon Baby - HOAX
If Harry Styles ever did a bunch of ecstasy and decided to make an alternative rock song it would sound like this.
It definitely depends on your mood with song because it is extremely upbeat, and the lyrics kind of suck, but if you’re in a good mood this song is perfect. Listen to this on Friday after you finish your last class or get off work, it makes me feel good, i think you’ll feel the same way.
Roleplaying for Guitarists
(or 101 things you can do with a guitar)
Hey folks…I’m back again and I’m here to tell you about all the wonderful things you can do with a guitar! Seriously…aside from music you can employ it for a variety of manual tasks such as improvising a hammer, a cricket bat or even going as far as Antonio Banderas’ character “El Mariachi”  in “Once Upon a Time in Mexico” and concealing a grenade launcher in it…
Ok..so seriously though – that’s not quite what I’m getting at. A lot of people feel there’s one way that they’re meant to play guitar – like the classical guitarist playing intricate Bach arrangements or a devout metalist  shredding out atonal solos at ear splitting volume. But in both cases they’re playing the fundamentally the same 6 string instrument. True, one is a nylon string acoustic classical guitar and the other is a pointy headstock electric shred-machine, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t transferable skills. Transferable skills means be able to enjoy a wider range of music for a casual player and being able to play a wider range of gigs for a pro. If you play a narrowly defined style, be aware that you don’t have to paint yourself into a box. For instance..
Our  refined Classical Guitarist could also turn his hand to styles like Bossa Nova,  Flamenco, Tango,  or even Pop (check out Edgar Cruz’s brilliant Queen arrangements if you don’t believe me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqXfGGVx6rs
And our erstwhile demented  shredtastic metaller may find he has a knack for Rock, Blues or Country (all these styles can contain heavy lashing of lead guitar)
And if you primarily play a steel string acoustic, you still have a range that includes folk, delta blues, bluegrass, ragtime, pop and rock.
And these are just styles that you can explore on your primary instrument (Classical Guitar, Electric Guitar or Steel String Acoustic).
Of course, you’re gonna need to make some adaptions. Sanity dictates that you won’t be able to use the same squealing lead to that you use for metal in a country number. The country lead guitarist uses a different way to stand out – a bright clean twangy tone with maybe a touch of reverb, compression and delay. But it doesn’t mean they don’t tear it up!
If you’re a classical guitarist moving into boss nova, you’re going to encounter some unfamiliar jazz chords that might throw you. Or if you start exploring flamenco, you might find the extremely rhythmic nature of the music challenging.
If your primarily a steel string pick player of pop and and rock and you decide to explore ragtime, you’re going to encounter the need to use some kind of finger style, either naked fingers, pick and fingers, thumbpick and fingers or thumbpick and fingerpicks – professional players use all these combinations so it’s a matter of seeing what works well for you)
So don’t paint yourself into a box..if you find that you’re lacking enthusiasm for your normal style, you can inject a whole new lease of life into your playing by embracing a new style. Sure, we might like to define yourself by the style we play (much like teenagers might define themselves by their favourite band) but the truth is there’s only 2 kinds of music…good music and bad music!
Till next time…
Your pleasant plucking phriend
Nat
