HI QUINN I’M SO GLAD IT’S COOLER SO I CAN BE OBNOXIOUS AND SEND YOU A PILE OF ASKS!!!!
sorry the coffee just took
oh oh oh so for The Goobfic
2: What scene did you first put down?
3: What’s your favorite line of narration?
4: What’s your favorite line of dialogue?
7: Where did the title come from?
and and i know that’s already four questions and i am terrible BUT
9: Were there any alternate versions of this fic?
for the lost and found fic but also the therapy fic? :D
i am sorry (not sorry at all) for being so greedy :D
This is from so long ago that I can’t even find the original ask list to link back to, but! here we go. (and by 'The Goobfic' I assume you mean 'to want and to have and to hold')
2: What scene did you first put down?
I actually posted an early version of it on tumblr before I was even certain I’d write the whole thing, but I can’t find it to link (lazy tags, amirite?). The scene was from chapter 1 when Lena tries to 'sneak out' and powerless-Kara is like ‘heck no’. While a lot changed from the original ‘sketch’, the bones are there. I had written it originally to see if I thought I could tap into the animosity I wanted the experience of the first and second chapter to be (tiny excerpt below).
“Then get out of my way,” Lena said darkly. “I wouldn’t expect someone so good at holding grudges to be so forgetful.” “I'm fully functioning in that department, thanks.” “Oh, so then you remember those howls outside are Goobs. Towering Goobs who wouldn’t think twice about tracking a fleshy human down and tearing you limb to limb.” “Hardly. Now please-” “Do you hear how close they are?" Kara continued. "We should wait until the next cycle. Until I can go out-” “That’s another nine days away, and in case you hadn’t noticed, this isn’t exactly a utopian paradise worth sticking around for.” “Then Ill go" Kara said, all cheeto-puffed out chest and heroic vibrato. "Solo.” Lena scowled. “You are incompetent and powerless.” “Not if you write down the instructions.” “How do you expect me to instruct you to do something I’m still interrogating?” “I’ll… I can describe it to you," Kara flailed. “You may have won a Pulitzer, but don’t be so misguided to think it had anything to do with your vivid imagery, Supergirl.”
3: What’s your favorite line of narration?
My memory is terrible, so i’m limiting this to chapter 3. My favorite line is actually two instances of a similar line. The first instance is:
The hand lay open; reaching. Lena fetched the sun lamps.
The hand is Kara's. For me, it summarizes the progress they’ve made till now while highlighting how much is left to go. The final line of the story is meant to reference this moment*.
*mild spoiler: the necessary disclaimer is that this final moment isn’t meant to suggest everything is resolved; quite the contrary, but it is meant to represent the choice they’ve made to take it on together.
4: What’s your favorite line of dialogue?
For me it’s this moment:
“But there’s no science lab," Kara said haughtily. "Guess you’ll have to make your kryptonite the old fashioned way.” “By blowing up a planet?” Kara froze. Her expression fell and gaze dropped.  Lena felt a tug of remorse. She cleared her throat. The remorse passed.
While there are softer bits that I love, this line was such a gut-punch. There is a cruelty and pettiness unlocked by this moment, and it sort of perfectly encapsulates the level of anger Lena carries at the beginning of the story contrasted with a very (very) tiny pang of guilt. I think what makes it even more powerful is seeing how big of a shift that perspective takes in chapter 3 where the inverse applies.
7: Where did the title come from?
I got married recently (thursday, actually), and when I started writing this I was also (coincidentally and with much banter) thinking about wedding vows and the traditional ‘to have and to hold’. This felt compelling as a title, but it didn’t work with where the story (and Lena) starts: she doesn’t have Kara; in her mind she doesn’t have much of anything, but she still wants. What exactly, I don’t think she can articulate, but it’s there.
And then there’s this moment in chapter two (to have; Kara’s apology) where the opposite occurs: she effectively has Kara because Kara more or less gives herself up, but it isn’t until chapter three (to hold) that it all sort of comes together. And so, there you have it: to want and to have and to hold, the world's most tedious title.
The Goobfic is far more fitting.
9: Were there any alternate versions of this fic?
For the therapy fic (aka a nemesis and her hero), no there weren’t. There are a handful of stories that get yeeted in a fit of spastic writing, and that was absolutely one of them, so my brain didn’t have time to come up with any alternate versions. For the lost and found fic (aka a crisis of indulgence), it actually started as an original work of fiction about a barkeep who refused to discard forgotten items. Some called them a hoarder, but eventually the forgotten items gave the bar a warm museum-like quality: umbrellas hung from the low rafters, pleats of scarfs carefully tacked to the walls, glass-covered shadow-boxes of misplaced chapstick, movie tickets, and sunglasses became the tables. All carefully indexed with hand-written tags that were cataloged in the off-chance their owner showed up. I could never decide on a narrative direction though, so I tried a supercorp version just to get it out of my head.

Note
I’d really like to hear your thoughts on MAWS characters alongside Lois, if you want to do that of that’s entirely up to you but it would be really interesting ^_^
I've written about maws a fair bit on this blog! You can find my general thoughts on the jesncin talks maws tag and my massive maws Lois essay here for my thoughts on her. Suffice to say I'm not a fan of this show, lol. I haven't been able to stomach watching season 2 so my entire knowledge is limited to season 1. With that said, roundup of my thoughts on maws characters:
Clark Kent: boring. Vanilla. Critical lack of hero motivation and idealism outside of "people are getting hurt!" as a platitude. Just some guy who does chores because that's the nice thing to do. Not defeating the Superman Is Boring allegations- just has an uwu cute cinnamon roll himbo filter on it.
Lois Lane: xenophobic asian lois lane is the worst crime ever committed to me. A historically jaded, award winning, accomplished career woman fighting against work place misogyny is now a cutesty uwu girl-failure who needs the help of two men to get hired. Barf.
Jimmy Olsen: I get the attempt at making him a conspiracy theorist as a means of tapping into Jimmy's wacky silver age antics and to bounce off of Clark for shenanigans, but it doesn't meaningfully interrogate how that is at odds with his job as a journalist. Also he was sidelined hard in S1- more than he was in CW Supergirl.
Perry White: I was hoping that unlike STAS and if MAWS was going to pull from anime, that this meant strong relationships with Superman's cast system. But nope. Perry is just a running gag. I was hoping for a Snapper and Kara dynamic like in CW Supergirl.
Scoop troop (Cat Grant, Ronnie Troupe, Steve Lombard): Superfluous characters, easily delete-able. All of which have been reinterpreted as anime stereotypes. Yawn.
Newskid Legion: Also delete-able and a waste of my time. They should be called newsies. They make no sense as outdated characters placed in a futuristic setting. What is child labor doing this late in the game. Be more creative with modernizing outdated characters.
Pa and Ma Kent: Boring. The biggest problem you can have with the Kents is making them generic supportive parents like they're sentient Hallmark cards. Pa Kent got the bad end of the stick as the clueless parent, while Ma Kent was pushed as the heart of the family to Clark. Not that she did much.
Vicki Vale: Absolutely insane of this show to add another Asian xenophobe woman journalist. The MAWS crew love gloating about how they're not going to include Batman in MAWS, but they can't resist putting a Gothamite in their show and stealing rogues from other heroes. Could've brought Angela Chen (a canonically asian Metropolis reporter) from STAS but I guess she's not as big a name as a Gotham character, eh?
Livewire: the glowdown of a century. DCSHG continues to outperform every modern version of this character. Why make her a generic smuggler when her original job as a shock jokey is far more interesting?? Podcaster or influencer was right there. Her motives make no sense too.
Intergang crew: Why. Did they consolidate. Banshee with two random rogues (Mist & Roughouse) and call them Intergang. That's so many glowdowns at once. I've never seen someone look at a hero's diverse rogues gallery and say "let's consolidate all these characters so we have less material to work with in the future". I hate how the rogues are all tech based, and share the same origin. These baddies kickstarted the show's "villains with petty crime motivations": no ideological or thematic draw to them.
Ivo/Parasite: Another villain with nonsensical motivations. His business is going bankrupt so he sets up an investor event party to show off his Black Panther Lexo suit (which was apparently a response to Superman! A stranger that we can't trust! And somehow these expensive suits are more trustworthy) only to attack his investors and get owned by Superman. Then he just has a hateful vendetta against Superman. People who think this is a good Parasite interpretation because they projected vague Elon Musk are kidding themselves. I could clown on MAWS' Ivo all day. He is so badly written.
Heatwave: Why genderbend a Flash villain when Superman already has a Fire Woman in his rogues gallery? Volcana? Remember her? She's from the same show yall got Livewire from? Praise this show all you want for "reigniting interest in Superman", it's clear they're willing to toss away actual Superman cast characters for more popular characters from other heroes when it suits them. What's Heatwave's motivations? Petty crime.
Slade Wilson/Deathstroke: Imagine building this character up to be a big threat only to do nothing with him lol. I can't take him seriously, his voice acting is the worst and I hate his design. This show is so desperate to make attractive villains for fangirls it's frankly pathetic. How did people even mistaken him for Superman? He doesn't FLY.
Mallah and The Brain: This is what happens when you revive gay villains and put them through the HarlIvy Respectability Beam on fast forward. The gay villains aren't villains anymore! Because that would be bad representation! They're now cute cuddly domestic dads who want to raise robot children and run away together!! How TRITE. Mallah has "american faking a french accent" syndrome but bad voice acting is the norm in this show.
Mxy: The one time they include a villain that Lois and Jimmy could easily help Superman defeat (Mxy's whole deal is that you can send him to his dimension by tricking him to spell or say his name backwards) they opt to make it even dumber by just "removing his hat". Because the MAWS crew aren't smart enough to think of ways Superman and his pals can trick Mxy. For the record, CW Supergirl got this right in comparison.
Legion of Loises: It's the way this show can't write competent women even when that's the goal. All the characters act so stupid and that includes the Legion of Loises. At least MAWS!Lois learns the important lesson that even though she's not as accomplished as these career focused versions of her, at least she can keep her man. Misogyny in a cute package.
Alex/Lex Luthor: Go away. Ugly design I can't stand him. Miserable voice acting as usual.
Amanda Waller: She's pretty generic here. Playing second fiddle to Sam Lane for the most part, but this show has a problem with fleshing out Black characters in general so.
Sam Lane: We now have up to THREE asian xenophobes in MAWS season 1. The crew did not think their diversity through because at the end of the day S1 was really about a White Guy Alien getting oppressed by mostly people of color. Without a hint of irony.
Jor-El: I thought the language barrier between him and Clark was an inspired choice and clever as a means of postponing Clark learning about his heritage. But nope. Jor-El just starts magically talking in English later on. Otherwise boring and generic!
Brainy: I know he's prominent in S2 so I can't speak much for his character from the small impression I got of him in S1, but I can say that he looks mad ugly <3 truly horrible rogues designs in this show.
PHEW!! That's my roundup of MAWS character opinions! Wild how I can't even pinpoint a character I like on this show, lol. I know Kara's in S2 as well, and what I've seen of her sounds awful. Her design is bad too. I'm just not ready for the heartbreak of meeting that version of her because I love Supergirl so much :((

HEY THERE! I don't know if you remember this, but you wrote these tags for a post that i've made, and i actually haven't been able to stop thinking about it. YOU RUINED ME!!!
Do you have more thoughts on this? Like- i've been thinking about tara trying to mimic what sam does, and sometimes it's not really possible for a human to do that, and sam has to stop her.
I love your mind, btw <3333
Tumblr media
Post in question. Oh I do, I really went off with that Supergirl!Sam concept. I haven't really thought much more about it, I actually began writing it as a joke and then it just really got away from me.
Tara idolises her new big sister, she wants to be just like her, as big and strong, and she doesn't quite get why she can't. She knows Sam's different, she gets that, but she keeps trying anyway. I'm imagining Sam being so terrified because Tara keeps putting herself into dangerous situations, knowing Sam will be there to catch her, but Sam is terrified as it is to touch her - so scared that she'll hurt her - let alone the very thought of what if one day she isn't there to catch her.
And her mother? God this woman. Sam was prepared to stay out of her way and just pretend she doesn't exist in this house, to age out and find her own way in the world. But she watches the way that woman treats her own daughter, and she can't stay silent. The first time she sees her hit Tara, Sam sees red. She burns a hole through the living room wall, she has Christina by the throat, icy breathe burning against this woman's ear as she warns her what will happen if she ever lays hands on that girl again. And when she lets go, when she realises what she's done, how she really is the monster everyone says she must be, she looks over to her little sister on the floor. And she's smiling at her. There's a bleeding cut across her cheek and she should be scared, but Tara's beaming up at Sam and scrambling forward and wrapping her arms around her stomach and she says "you're supposed to hug me back dummy, don't you know how to hug?"

re: ur post abt the bad bbc merlin fanfiction. ur so real and correct its truly so dire out there i haven’t heard anyone else say it. the trenches are the only way to describe trying to find good shit like it’s given me trust issues. BUT anyway if u have any recs i would love to read them bc im STRUGGLING out here 😭🙏
well i wouldn’t be me if i didn’t first point out that you should really just watch better shows than bbc merlin. but i digress. back during the horrors two years ago i had a tag for merlin fanfic recommendations i’ll use on this post so you can see whatever i said then but right here right now i’m gonna put you onto some real shit
fundamental imperfection. this is just my favorite <3
tintagel. i can’t get too into it. you’re gonna have to trust me
hunger games au. crazy read if you don’t think for too long about it being kind of stupid as shit. also read this author’s other stuff but not the modern au office romance that one’s bad
olympics au. just throwing this out there for the timeliness of it. goodbye the 2024 olympics 💔
you could also if you’re really feeling crazy watch a movie from this list i made during the horrors of movies i think merlin and arthur bbc merlin could do. the list has explanations because i was crazy and it still holds up because i’m always right! so congrats you came to the right person on a relatively decent day <3
peace and love to you on this journey. again i would be remiss to point out the obvious fact that you should watch better tv shows than bbc merlin. such as xena warrior princess or supergirl. or perhaps galavant. anyway whatever watch whatever you want i just feel like it’s my civic duty to steer people away from bbc merlin because i think it’s bad and misogynistic and caters to viewers who don’t care about women despite their false pretenses of vague written by men girl power feminism. and definitely don’t watch bbc atlantis. you’re gonna feel like you have to after merlin but you don’t. i’m being serious watching bbc atlantis will only cause you harm it’s so much more bad than merlin AND it doesn’t even have any of merlin’s good qualities. ok i’m done. i’m literally trying to save you you have got to believe me here. ok bye

ao3 wrapped fic writer 2023
i know ao3 wrapped for readers is not a thing and frankly as impressive as it would be to see just how many millions of words i have read this past year, i don't know if i need to know just how much i hung around in the devil's sacrament shown back to me, ya know?
so i instead just wanna celebrate and focus on all the writing i was able to do this year up to nov 30 (today). this is just for posted stuff on ao3, obviously my wips folder (aka my lazy susan of drafts) is a different story LOL.
also, super important for me to point out: this is meant for celebration and pride! after having been on hiatus from writing for like 7 years, i'm so happy to be able to get back into writing again. with that said, if the numbers for your ao3 isn't as high as you'd liked, please just know that i'm still very proud that you wrote AND published your work to share with others. it can and does take a lot out of you to write and share freely like this. so if nothing else, you should know that! (and if you haven't written much at all this year for whatever reason, i'm still proud of you! like i said, it's tough sometimes but we should still celebrate ourselves)
if you're a writer and see this and want to play along, feel free to just copy and paste. there's no tagging because i wouldn't wanna put people on the spot/make someone uncomfortable. ok onwards etc etc

Twenty questions for fic writers
thanks for the tag @lowkeyed1!
1. How many works do you have on AO3? 53 without my podfic only works
2. What's your total AO3 word count? 195,236
3. What fandoms do you write for? According to my front page, the fandoms I write the most for are Haven (7) Ted Lasso (6) Fandom - Fandom (6) Teen Wolf (5) Our Flag Means Death & Willow (4)
I'm fine with Haven being my number one but I'd like to bump Teen Wolf off there. My Willow fic will overtake it soon but I still need another fandom to push it off completely!
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
A Wedding of Errors - Teen Wolf, Allison/Lydia, Rated T - Wedding Planner AU and my first (and only?) Big Bang fic! It had beautiful at and I still follow the artist though it looks like the post got deleted in a blog rebrand or something.
Not a Rebound - Supergirl, Winn/James, Rated E - Post season 2 episode 1 smut I wrote to make myself feel better after they nerfed Kara/James for no reason! (we know the reason 😑)
No Time Like the Present - Young Justice, Jamie/Bart, Rated G - Short little future fic of Bart having a panic attack and Jamie helping him out. First time I wrote something and was like wow that was like writing writing!
Uninvited - Elementary, Gen Sherlock & Watson - pod together project I had to ask for a co-writer to help pinch hit this for me because I was struggling. It was strange to co-write, especially with a stranger, but it was interesting and the podficcers seemed to have fun!
ShapeShift - Teen Wolf, Stiles/Danny, Rated T - AU based on a Bollywood movie I found on Netflix and became obsessed with called Pyaar Impossible. Also a pod together project!
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? Sometimes. I like that ao3 has the unread comments on your front page, so I like to keep them there so I can see them and smile at them when I'm scrolling through the suggested marked for later stuff. If someone has commented multiple times, I'll usually thank them on the most recent one rather than replying to all of them. Of course if someone asks a question I'll answer. Otherwise it depends on my mood.
6. What is a fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? I was gonna say I try not to leave fics on too an angsty note but then I remembered Garder le Silence my Harry Potter pod together that's an episode of Potterwatch during book 7. It's pretty moody all the way through.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Probably A Wedding of Errors. It's the only fic with an epilogue so you actually have a little time after the couple gets together. Hmm should I write more epilogues? 🤔
8. Do you get hate on fics? I got an angry comment on Wedding saying it was a bad f/f fic because I spend too much time on the side m/m/m love triangle. Honestly that was something I was worried about and if the person had just been disappointed, I would've understood but they were just mean so fuck em.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? a little! increasingly more so last month lol some light d/s, with a lot of silliness and communication
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written? nah I don't love the idea of crossovers. Usually I'd rather have a full AU
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? i don't think so?
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Yes! Wedding was translated into Russian in 2015, two years after I wrote it and the translator made a little banner for it!
Tumblr media
😭 it is so crazy to think someone thought about my fic so much they put it in another language! I am in awe of them. Umi no Iruka you can ask anything of me. You can throw me into battle like a pokemon. I am in your debt.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? Just Uninvited!
14. What's your all-time favorite ship? Bakugou Katsuki/Midoriya Izuku from My Hero Academia. I have never written a fic for them and I probably never will. It's a classic case of, if I loved you less, I might be able to talk about it more. 🥺
15. What's a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will? Hmm well I don't usually post anything unless I've finished it. I did start a series of fics for a glee rare pair but I am nOT going back to that. I have the last installment in my Winn gets fucked series like 90% done I literally just need them to fuck and I can post it. I have a couple Haven WIPs I probably won't go back to unless the hyperfixation comes back in a big way.
16. What are your writing strengths? Dialogue, calling back to things earlier in the fic, estimating the word count of a story, which I didn't think was a strength but lowkeyed said it was their weakness so i guess!
17. What are your writing weaknesses? Description of places blegh, coming up with events for people to do between plot points, describing how people move and gesture? I can see things so clearly in my head it's so hard to describe! it's like "and then they do the face they did in episode 6 where they were like hmnmm you know??" impossible! I should've become an artist!
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic? I would love to if I knew the language well enough but unfortunately I'm english only. I've thrown in a few lines sparingly but I think there's definitely some cool stuff that can happen if it's used right by someone who understands the language well.
19. First fandom you wrote for? I think Jimmy Neutron? I got into fandom young lol
20. Favorite fic you've written? Whatever I'm currently working on is my favorite! I love creating so much and I'm ecstatic imagining all the scenarios and tweaking them over and over and living in their heads and surprising myself when I come up with things I didn't plan! So by that measure my favorite is my unpublished Cyrano inspired romcom but if we're going published, I of course have to go with Multivocal, my heart ❤️ or perhaps A Familiar Sound, my soul! ✨

I Wish it Was Me...
by Fyonah_MacNally
Meeting her friends at the bar has become a common occurrence for Lena. It’s an almost weekly affair, every Friday they meet up at Al’s for happy hour, dancing, pool, and catching up on the happenings of all their lives outside their superhero antics. Recently, these nights have ended with Lena snuggled in Kara’s arms at either of their apartments. They usually end up going to brunch the next morning and spending most of their weekends together. While she realizes she should put an end to it before she obliterates her own heart, she’s not known for her self-preservation.

An Unexpected Journey
Fandom: Supergirl
Characters: Lena Luthor, Samantha Arias, Ruby Arias, Alex Danvers, Kara Danvers, Lillian Luthor, Elizabeth Walsh, Lionel Luthor, Original Characters-Ari Arias and Jonas Arias
Summary: Lena is going on a forced vacation with her best friend Sam and her daughter Ruby. However, things don't go exactly as planned when they reached their destination. This story I did is for the AO3 Tag Roulette: July 2023 from Prompt Roulette. The tags that I used from this were the following: Opera singers; sudoku; magnolias; wicked eyes and wicked hearts; fox. I am not sure if I will continue it our not. Let me know in the comments if you want to see more.
Word Count: 9,903
Chapter: 1/?
Prologue
Elizabeth went to stoked the flames in the fire hoping she could learn anything from them. She was irritated because it was taking her a while to invoke a vision. She was used to the grand fire places of the palace versus the fire pit in the run down cabin that her and the remaining royals were hiding in. After poking at the fire for a bit, she started to get a clear image. Her face fell from what she saw. She quickly rushed to the window to confirm the image for herself. Her pulsed raced when she saw a mob approaching in the distance. They had outrun mobs before, but that was when there was about twenty people max. This mob at least had 5,000 people, possibly even more.
“If even a small portion of them have magic reducing weapons like the other mobs…,” thought Elizabeth.
She quickly shook her head. She needed to move quickly. While the mob looked to be a half hour away, they unfortunately sent 100 scouts ahead. They were ten minutes from the cabin, and she wasn’t sure if any of them had something that could penetrate the magical barrier she put around it. She quickly, but quietly woke up her lover Lionel and his wife Lillian, and the Arias: Ari and Jonas. She peaked into the bedroom and saw that her four year old daughter Lena and the Arias’ 8 year old daughter Samantha was still asleep. She quietly closed to the door and went back to the adults.
“Why are you waking us up at this hour?” yawned Lillian.
“We have been found. There is a mob of 5000 on their way to this location as we speak. The scouts that they sent ahead are almost at the cabin.”
“Then we will fight,” said Lionel.
“We should easily beat a mob with two dragons and a sorceress,” said Jonas.
“They don’t stand a chance,” Ari smirked.
As Lionel, Ari, and Jonas started to get up to prepare for battle, Lillian stared at Elizabeth’s solemn expression.
“Everyone wait,” said Lillian
“We don’t have time for this,” said Lionel.
“She isn’t telling us everything. There is something wrong,” said Lillian frowning.
Lionel turned to Elizabeth and ask, “Is that true?”
Elizabeth nodded and said, “We are not going to win this fight.”
“How can you say that?” asked Ari baffled.
“As dragons, you and Jonas are able to smell things from miles away. The same goes for your hearing. The mob and the scouts are all in a 20 mile radius. Did you hear or smell this group coming?”
“No,” said Ari looking worried.
“So, they found us. That doesn’t mean anything,” said Lionel.
“No, Lionel. Something is wrong. If Ari and I didn’t sense anything that means that they are using magic blockers,” said Jonas solemnly.
“Which makes this particular mob lethal. If they have magical blockers, they more than likely have the Avarice potion that has been killing off a lot of magical creatures,” said Elizabeth.
“And if they had anywhere near as many potions as they did in Charlesburg….,” whispered Ari.
The room went silent for a minute until Lillian asked, “What about that option you mentioned a month ago about transporting us all to a new world?”

I was reading your tags for Kara/Lena and Drarry and got so curious about the supergirl fandom what happened??? Was the supergirl actress homophobic?? The one who was in glee and that’s why she wasn’t?!?
OH MY GOD OKAY I AM SO SORRY FOR WHAT IS ABOUT TO HAPPEN
The place? San Diego Comic Con. The year? 2017. Everything seems normal. Casts of shows are doing interviews, cracking jokes, it's a good time. And then the Supergirl cast are interview by MTV. And Jeremy Jordan sings a little musical recap of the previous season, in which he jokes that Kara and Lena are just friends. Well, I say joked...he very enthusiastically insists they're just friends. It is, shall we say, tactless. The cast seems surprised but are all laughing to various extents. Later on in the interview they're asked about shipping, and Jeremy Jordan says he's probably going to get some hate for his having "debunked Supercorp." Melissa Benoist tells him that he's "very brave."
Thus ends the part of this story that physically takes place at Comic Con 2017, but the real drama is just getting started.
(the page break is here for dramatic effect, but also because this somehow got very long)
You have to understand, anon, this is in between the second and third seasons of Supergirl. Karamel (Kara and Mon-El) were season 2's highly divisive power couple and the Karamel stans were making it everyone's business to know they had come out of the season on top. And you'd think they'd be in the midst of a great ship war with Karolsen (Kara and James) who decided to just be friends at the start of the season, but nope! No, their big enemy was the Supercorp fans. It was heated. It was tense. There was a block list that got circulated.
I'd say the Supergirl ship wars were the worst I'd ever encountered, but I would go on to join the Timeless fandom, and learned the very hard lesson of why small fandoms and ship wars should not mix. That being said, I'd put the Supercorp/Karamel drama as worse than the Clexa/Bellarke drama, if that helps put things into context for you at all.
So, suffice it to say, the internet was in upheaval over this.
Since I was firmly on the Supercorp side of the Supercorp/Karamel divide at the time, I can't say with much certainty how Karamel shippers reacted, though I assume they were pleased with themselves. But Supercorp fans were not okay. See, anon, I don't know when you started your journey into fandom, but in case it was after this, 2017 was a much different time. Lesbian ships weren't really shipped with the intention of them becoming canon since it was only recently that lesbian ships had started becoming canon, and wlw fandom spaces were all still reeling from the Great Lesbian Purge of 2016, in which roughly 40% of the canon queer women on television were killed off during the television season. (To this day I will watch shows and a queer woman will unexpectedly die for seemingly only shock value, and I'll be horrified, until I see the date the episode aired. Spring of 2016? Yeah, that tracks. Deep sigh. Lost another one to the Bury Your Gays.) Lesbian ships did not have the strength in canon that straight ships had, or the mainstream nerd appeal that gay male ships had. Not only did you have to contend with bitter ship wars, you had to contend with everyone telling you that you shouldn't be shipping the ship in the first place, that having a vested interest in a ship that would never happen was a lost cause and a question of sanity. To be a fan of a wlw ship was to be shut down at every single turn when you weren't even asking to go down the road and were just looking to see a potential view.
(Supercorp was far from the only ship to ever have to put up with this. If you take a look at fandom history, you'll see this countless times. Heck, the Xena fans who wanted Xena to end up with Ares were very determined that the lesbians would not overtake their show.)
But for some people, Supercorp was their first wlw ship. Their first queer community. Their first validation that it wasn't wrong to look at the main character of an incredibly popular show and wonder what it would be like if she kissed her same-gender best friend. I sincerely hope, anon, that whatever flavor you may favor, you have found that kind of validation in your media. It's liberating.
And now here you had Jeremy Jordan and Melissa Benoist "debunking" the myth that Kara and Lena could ever have feelings for each other. In all ways except physical, it was like the Supercorp fandom had just participated in the ice bucket challenge. And, whether it was as part of the Supergirl fandom or elsewhere, the Supercorp fans had already been through hell. It got ugly. Then there were memes. Then there was a lot of hate tweeting. Then there were people yelling about the hate tweeting. Mostly everyone was just a weird mix of angry and sad. These were two actors, two of the leads on this show, engaging in this behavior. It was a gut punch when everyone was already down.
Friday night, Jeremy Jordan releases an apology. It's not really an apology. It's an "I'm sorry you're upset" with a lot of condemnation and self defense. It has the general vibes that we'd describe in 2023 as "it's not that deep," but instead of addressing it to the fans, he condescendingly addresses it "Hey Kids."
Yeah, he'd spend the weekend regretting that.
Sunday, Jeremy Jordan would put out another apology. It was a sincere one this time, admitting he messed up and didn't truly understand the implications of what he was saying or the deep roots of homophobia in fandom culture. Most people accepted this - he was an idiot who made a mistake. Time would tell if he made it again. (Spoiler alert: he did not.) Some people, however, are still mad.
And then there was Melissa Benoist. Mind you, I don't think she personally acknowledged any of this at all. But her publicist sent out a statement (according to the fact checking I'm doing as I write this, it was in a private email to a fan, who then posted the response to tumblr) that Melissa was a proven ambassador of LGBT acceptance, as shown by her work on Glee. Uh, yeah. So that became a meme.
This, more or less, is where our story ends, unless you count a since-deleted Blind Item put out by TVLine that may or may not have been about the cast of Supergirl (but was heavily speculated to be about the cast of Supergirl) in which someone overheard two actors fighting before an interview the following day about one of their behavior, that ended when the other said "I just can't talk about this right now." (I am so bummed I cannot link this article, anon, you have no idea.) (The leading theory was that Katie McGrath, who of course came to Supergirl already having amassed a sizable queer following from her role in Merlin and also possibly her role in Dracula, gave Mr. Jordan a piece of her mind about what was and wasn't acceptable to say to a queer fan.)
And that's my tale. In addition to the season they were promoting, the cast of Supergirl would go on to do four more seasons and manage to get out of the Arrowverse without overstaying their welcome or being cancelled unceremoniously. And they moved on. Jeremy Jordan went back to New York, where he returned to Broadway and Off-Broadway and he's soon to be Off-Off-Broadway in the premiere of The Great Gatsby: the Musical. He also along the way ended up playing one of Hallmark's very first gay main characters. Katie McGrath went on to be a bisexual character on an Irish show, do the audiobook narration for a lesbian period romance novel, and is a masked evil lady in the new John Wick tv show. And Melissa Benoist went on to do a lot of incredible things in her personal life that don't necessarily belong in this little essay I've written here.
Genuinely, I wish everyone in that cast all the best.
Anon, I am so sorry this got as long as it did. I hope this answered your question!

honestly I don't understand people's complaint that Superman should have his own content "for once". Batman is literally never in any Superman content. Batman isn't even in Batfam content; he was barely in Batwoman, in Gotham Bruce was barely allowed to become Batman by the end of the show, in the new CW show he's not even going to be in it for the whole show. he keeps getting sidelined in stuff about the Justice League to the point where he's usually not even a founding member anymore, and in Superpets they didn't even let him talk about his family (I'm still mad about that).
Batman is mentioned in one line at the very end of Smallville. he implicitly exists in Supergirl, but only when she's doing crossovers with Batwoman. he explicitly doesn't exist in Superman & Lois. like I haven't seen all of the old and very old Superman shows but I'm pretty sure the crossovers (if any) are brief. Batman definitely doesn't appear in the real Superman movies at all.
if people are writing crossover fic with Batman and Batfam stuff that's because Batman is extremely popular and appeals to specifically a very obsessive and very artistically prolific crowd (for narratively clear reasons I think). and like. the answer is not to get mad at them??? if you want art and fics without Batman then just make them. no one is stopping you. I looked into the my adventures with superman tag and there were only 242 new posts and almost all of the top ones were just straight up quotes or screengrabs from the show, not much art and no fics or headcanons. most of the meta was the aforementioned complaint or complaints about how the DCEU got Superman wrong (which, sure, but boring). (and only one of the top posts even mentioned Batman positively)
if you don't want people putting Batman in your Superman posts make more Superman posts it's that simple

Music tags
The lovely @wanderlust-in-my-soul taged me in a combo of the song-tag and the 10-songs-on-your-playlist-right-now-tag, thank you so much for it, it made my day when I saw it and I had so much fun doing this. I only now found time to do a post about it, sadly work got in the way of it in the last couple of weeks.
Sooo, I'm going to combine those two tags into one mushed up tag of my 10 most loved and listended to songs.
song-tag rules: 🎶✨when u get this u have to put 5 songs u actually listen to, publish. then, send this ask/tag 10 of your favorite followers (non-negotiable, positivity is cool) 🎶
10-songs-on-your-playlist-right-now-tag rules: you can usually tell a lot about a person by the type of music they listen to. put your playlist on shuffle and list the first ten songs, and then tag ten people. no skipping!
I'm listening to a quite strange mix of eighthies pop, funk, soul, light punk / rock and classic music. I love songs with a good melody and good lyrics and I need songs that make me want to dance or at least to jump around to.
Well then, lets beginn:
BROTHER LOVE - CRIMER
I just love his music and his voice, it sounds like the songs were produced in the eighthies but they actually are not older than five years. His music also makes me want do dance!
ANALYSE - THE CRANBERIES
It reminds me of my year abroad as a teen, of that time I could be myself for the first time, when nobody knew me and didn't have prejudices. It was such a good and important year for me.
FEEL SO GOOD - JAMIROQUAI
That song just makes me want to dance! Love Jamiroquai's sound.
MOCKINGBIRD - BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST
It's one of the more melancholic songs in my playlist. It is also an old song, it was produced in 1971 but it still captures me with it's melody and lyrics and that melancholic feeling of saying goodbye to someone loved.
WILLKOMMEN - ROSENSTOLZ
OMG that song. A bit rough, a bit political and just queer. It was the title song of the german coming-of-age movie "Sommersturm" and both the movie and the song left lasting impressions in younger me. Non-german speaking people, you'll find a rough translation of the lyrics under https://lyricstranslate.com/en/willkommen-welcome.html.
ABSOLUTELY ME - CARO EMERALD
I looooove that album of her's and that song is just one of many that make me want to dance.
RELAX, TAKE IT EASY - MIKA
Mika's music and his lyrics are wonderful. His songs are produced in that eighthies-style I love and althought the melodies are mostly uplifting, the lyrics are always written carefully and subtle and about topics one would not expect at first from such happy melodies.
LA TRISTESSE DURERA (SCREAM TO A SIGH) - MANIC STREET PREACHERS
It's getting political for a moment. This song captured me with it's rythmic guitar and the meaning behind the lyrics.
SUPERGIRL - REAMONN
A song that, on the first glance, is about a strong woman but after listening a bit to the lyrics is a reminder that I don't have to be strong all the time, that it is good to let go sometimes, that I don't have to finght anymore.
WAKE UP - SEVEN
Good sound, beautiful voice and meaningful lyrics, what else should I want?
I'm taging @neo-neos @negrowhat @hello-n-goodbye @hippielovinlife-blog @absolutebl (who all have wonderful blogs that I greatly enjoy) and everyone else that wants to do this tag game. Have fun with it!

Superman: The Animated Series: The Top 10 Episodes
P. self-explanatory, I’d imagine. Multi-parters will count as one episode Let’s get rolling!
FIVE HONORABLE MENTIONS
“In Brightest Day”: This one’s admittedly here more for the historical importance. It’s a solid episode on its own, with a much-abbreviated mashup of Hal Jordan and Kyle Rayner’s origins serving as the main thrust, and Kyle is a very likable protagonist in his first day on the job, especially against a formidable threat in Ted Levine’s arrogant, well-essayed Sinestro. But what this represented to the larger DCAU is hard to understate, with the Green Lanterns and Guardians of Oa introduced, as well as the soaring musical leitmotif that will also go on to represent John Stewart in Justice League. Of the hero team-up episodes, this is definitely on the higher end.
“Speed Demons”: Speaking of which, this also has a great deal of importance in introducing Wally West as the Flash to the DCAU. And the episode is a ton of fun, especially with the mix of personalities and TMS’ animation bolstering the speedy movements of our heroes and environmental effects. The main reason it’s here and not on the list proper is that it’s fairly light and fluffy as these go. Weather Wizard gets a lot of mileage out of Miguel Ferrer’s confident sneering villainy and going as far to attempt to murder his nebbish brother, but he’s ultimately just kind of A Guy here, and the frivolity is indicated all too well by the ending tag as Superman and Flash cheerfully resume their race. It came close, but it can’t quite go the distance.
“Little Girl Lost”: Another important episode, this introduces Supergirl as well as Granny Goodness and her Female Furies on Apokolips. Nicholle Tom of The Nanny fame makes for an immediately winning Kara, sympathetic in her desire to roam free and tough enough to make her a credible heroine. As said in the main post, the legendary Ed Asner is hilarious and menacing in equal measure as Granny, just the right edge of camp, which Apokolips should always have to one degree or another. It doesn’t make the main list because I think it is a LOT of material to cover even in a two-parter, and I wonder if having Supergirl start in a more mundane adventure could’ve been beneficial. Still, what’s here is fun, and we get enough of Ironside’s Darkseid to tease us further, especially his darkly funny exit: “Teach Granny the price of failure.”
“Monkey Fun”: This is pure Silver Age ridiculousness, and I mean that as the highest compliment possible. Titano the giant space-irradiated monkey is one of Supes’ goofiest threats, and to see him get battered around like a children’s toy is remarkably funny. It’s also a good episode for Lois, as we learn about her military father Sam and childhood with Titano (few things can tug on the heartstrings like a little girl being devastated at a pet being taken away). She even gets to save the day in her own fashion.
“Legacy”: Yes, this is another series where the finale doesn’t end up on the top 10. No, I don’t know how this keeps happening. Mainly I quibbled with putting it there because while they’re excellent episodes, there is a clear sense of unfinished business. We wouldn’t fully answer the questions raised by the story until Justice League Unlimited, especially in regards to characters like Hamilton. And the final note is bittersweet, but hardly definitive. Still, this is some of the best action and drama in the series, especially the iconic Timm-boarded throwdown between Superman and Darkseid, which features just as many great lines as punches.
Other Miscellaneous Favorites: “My Girl”, “Fun and Games”, “Brave New Metropolis”, “The Hand of Fate”, “Knight Time”.
THE TOP 10
10. “Two’s A Crowd”: This feels underrated by a lot of fans tbh. Stan Berkowitz gives us a clever premise in Supes having to rely on Parasite’s absorbing abilities to tap into the mind of Dr. Earl Garver, who’s holding the city ransom via a bomb that he’s hidden. But it’s not quite that simple, and the twists it takes with Garver and Rudy Jones interacting are very well done. Garver benefits hugely from the vocal presence of the legendary Brian Cox, who brings his typical brand of egotistical intellect and confidence to what could have been a generic madman, relishing Berkowitz’s hammy dialogue with gusto. It’s a good showing for Brion James as Jones too, who has his own opinions about getting crowded out of his body, and expressive TMS animation is the cherry on top; while they were always great with action scenes, their character acting is a great boon to this episode in particular.
9. “The Main Man”: Sometimes two-parters in this series feel like butter scraped over too much bread in terms of thin plots getting padded out by action scenes (this would also be an issue at times in the first two seasons of Justice League before the Unlimited rebrand). Thankfully, that’s not the case here, primarily because we have such a surplus of character work. As noted in the main post, Brad Garrett is terrific as Lobo, a character who should never be taken completely seriously, and his comedic crassness matches well with Tim Daly’s increasingly impatient straight man. (Credit also to Harvey R. Cohen for giving Lobo a distinct musical identity with bitchin’ electric guitars) It also does have a genuinely intriguing plot, with the creepy Preserver as a formidable foe and Superman having to use his wits to get out of the situation; my particular favorite moment is him briar patching a group of thugs. Also features the iconic scene where Clark sarcastically confesses to being Superman to annoy Lois.
8. “The Way of All Flesh”: This is a fascinating episode because it takes a premise that would have been an outright tragedy in Batman: The Animated Series and tweaks it to fit this series’ tone. Corben is never anything less than a brutal asshole intent on killing Superman and clearly has no regrets on that score. But the struggle with his dwindling senses is nevertheless compelling, and Malcolm McDowell gives a stellar performance as Corben rages against his loss of humanity. Add in some great TMS-aided fight scenes and one of my favorite cold-blooded Luthor moments (”And just what makes you think there’s anything of him left to find?”), and you’ve got a classic.
7. “Solar Power”: There’s a bit of a pattern with my favorite episodes in terms of Superman having to rely on more than just his powers to solve the problem, and this fits in well here. Edward Lytener, who first debuted in the episode “Target” as a stalker/burned source of Lois, returns to take vengeance on Superman by becoming Doctor Light Luminus and creating a device that turns the Earth’s yellow sun rays into red ones to put Superman on a normal human level. It’s clever plotting, and Robert Hays gives a fantastically smug performance as Lytener, relishing his attacks and holographic tricks (it resembles the kind of stuff Mysterio puts Spider-Man through on the regular at points); he also has one of my favorite big “NO!” deliveries ever.
6. “Mxyzpixilated”: This has a great Looney Tunes vibe, with Superman baffled and confused by Mxyzpltks braying jackass routine, but ultimately turning the tables and becoming more of a Bugs Bunny type trickster than I’ve ever seen him as before. It’s another one where Tim Daly gets to shine with deadpan deliveries, such as a moment where a stunned Mxyzpltk blusters that his friends will remain animals if he doesn’t play along: “They don’t seem to mind.” Very funny stuff, with an immensely satisfying ending.
5. “Ghost in the Machine”: Much like Harley Quinn’s introduction in Batman, Luthor’s bodyguard Mercy Graves proved compelling enough in her creation here that she crossed over into the main DCU comics. And it’s easy to see why, with Lisa Edelstein giving her a fantastic don’t-fuck-with-me vocal edge and proving to be incredibly competent. This is a rare showcase for her and Luthor’s relationship, with us learning that she believes that Luthor taking her off the streets made her what she is. It’s more than a little sad, especially with the final moments playing out as Superman looks on. We also get Brainiac and Luthor interacting, which has fantastic dividends here with the tycoon oddly vulnerable and his protestations having little effect on the brutally efficient A.I. (plus it pays off down the line in a very unexpected way in Unlimited).
4. “The Last Son of Krypton”: As said in the main post, this is a top-tier pilot movie, especially part 1 with my favorite depiction of Krypton’s destruction ever. But the other two parts are equally good, with Jason Marsden giving teenage Clark genuine teenage angst without going over the top in part 2, and some truly kickass TMS action in part 3, plus a final scene that says everything it needs to about Superman and Luthor’s relationship.
3. “Apokolips...Now!”: The first part of this is quite good, bringing in Jack Kirby’s New Gods elegantly and giving us the backstory on them and Darkseid. But it’s part two that everyone remembers and gets it on the list, with Darkseid’s invasion of Earth offering dark action scenes with a genuinely operatic atmosphere. The stakes have never been higher, illustrated all too well by the death of Dan Turpin, which still shocks me to this day in its swift brutality. It becomes a loving tribute to Kirby and his work, and this would carry forward in the DCAU to even greater ends.
2. “The Late Mr. Kent”: I’ve never been fond of the idea with either Batman or Superman that one persona is fake and the other is “real”. To me, both should be true to some extent even if they ‘mask’ plenty. And this great episode illustrates why Clark Kent is necessary to him; he belongs in this world, not separate from humanity. The plotting is ingenious, making us wonder how Superman can get an innocent man off death row while appearing to die himself as Clark, and it’s a terrific showing for Lois as she takes up Clark’s quest as a way of honoring him, as best shown in a wonderfully played moment where she admits that she respected and liked him even amidst all the teasing. It features possibly the most chilling ending I’ve ever seen in a Western kid’s cartoon that still gives me goosebumps.
1. “World’s Finest”: Let’s see. Beautiful TMS animation? Check. Thrilling action scenes? Check. Snappy dialogue and outstanding character interactions? Check, double check, triple check. This isn’t just one of the most important episode of the DCAU historically, it’s one of the most purely FUN, barely seeming like it’s straining for effort in bringing all these characters together. Batman and Superman’s initial wary partnership is played just right, with hostility giving way to camaraderie as they save each other by turn and give the promise of more in the future. Even better might be Bruce Wayne and Lois Lane having a genuinely spicy romance, something that feels so obvious but is so rarely played out, and Conroy and Delany feel like an old-school movie star couple in their vocal stylings. And of course there’s the villains, as Luthor and Joker’s deal is inevitably, hilariously doomed to fail, and we get to watch two masters of the craft in Clancy Brown and Mark Hamill go at it like prizefighters. (Also hey, remember when the Joker was threatening AND funny instead of validating every weirdo edgelord on the Internet?) I never get tired of watching this one.
