A couple weeks ago I was blessed with a reading copy of A Strange and Stubborn Endurance by Foz Meadows, and let me tell you, it should be on every fantasy lover’s TBR for this summer. This is a story about kind, sensible, competent people dealing with assassins and intrigues, about finding love in unexpected places, about healing and unlearning unconscious biases. The writing and the setting are both lush and to be sunk into. It’s a beautiful queer love story, full of gentleness, wonderfully escapist in general, and gave me serious Marvellous Light vibes the whole way through. It’s not without darkness—there’s a very notable rape early on, for instance—but gosh, I need people to read this just so I can squee about it with them.

The Wolf Den by Elodie Harper is a refreshing take on historical fiction. Not only is it set in Roman Pompeii rather than northwestern Europe in the 19th or 20th centuries, but it’s centered on enslaved sex workers and told in modern language. (No thou’s or attempts to mimic Latin here!) The author has done a great job of bringing the ancient world to life and making it feel nearer than it is.

The book focuses on Amara, born into a middle-class Greek family and sold into slavery after family tragedy. As she does her best to better her circumstances at any cost, we get not only a portrait of a living Roman city with its pubs, parties, clothing stores, food stalls, and everyday injustices, but also a wonderful sense of the friendships and competition within the brothel she works in. I loved seeing how the women there formed a community among themselves, and how they fit into the wider society (or didn’t). I got the real sense that Harper had not only delved deep into how Roman society would’ve worked at the street level, but had done her diligence regarding the lives of (modern) sex workers too.

I also thought that Harper did a good job portraying the characters as complex, fallible, and human. She gives her female characters, especially Amara, the full range of emotions and all are believably imperfect. The worst of the men get sympathetic moments and the best of them, damning ones. They all feel of their time too—relatable or familiar, but also holding attitudes and beliefs that remind you this isn’t a modern story. (For instance, it’s clear that Amara knows slavery sucks for all enslaved people, but she never quite questions why slavery is even a thing.)

All in all, reading this felt like reading about real people leading real lives much more often than it felt like reading a novel. It’s a slowish read that feels at times like it’s digressing or offering up set pieces of Pompeiian life, but those moments all get woven back in neatly by the end. (It’s also slowish because of emotional drain. I couldn’t binge-read because bad things kept happening.) I found the ethical dilemmas compelling, though—if you’d damned no matter what, what’s the right option?—and enjoyed both how Harper told this story and woven in her themes and critiques. It’s definitely been one of the highlights of my reading month and I hope it gets a lot of attention once it’s out.

Note: while this book is definitely pro-sex work and has a lot of sympathy for those who find themselves forced into that life or exploited, it’s still set within an incredibly misogynistic society that saw no problem with degrading or harming women. If harassment, issues with consent or boundaries, or sexual violence are things you don’t want to read about, this might not be the book for you. They’re rarely graphic, but definitely prevalent.

Hello! I saw your 2022 Release TBR come across my dash, and I don't know if the Pride flags are to denote that the author or that the book itself is queer, but in either case, Seanan McGuire can absolutely have a flag :-)

Thanks! The flags are to denote queer characters here, not queer authors (for brevity and minimal confusion). I'm trying to be responsible and not put flags on books I'm not 100% sure of. For instance, I know Where the Drowned Girls Go is Cora's book, but I don't remember if Cora is canonically queer? Same goes for the characters in Seasonal Fears and for Alice in Spelunking Through Hell. If they're confirmed, I'll be adding that flag during my wrap-up, for sure.

They’re disasters as parents but they try their best and are always having fun - Nori adores them! In their house not a minutes goes by without someone laughing, they’re all super loud and cheerful always~ neither of them has any problem dealing with Nori’s quirk, Sero has spent a whole lifetime learning how to deal with sticky stuff and tape and glue so he knows all the tricks to save clothes and furniture from accidental quirk usage and so on, while Mina’s own quirk makes it easy to counter any glue that might end on her - the main thing actually is that the quirk itself was a surprise! Since Nori looks a lot like Mina, both she and Sero had expected her to have acid like Mina so when she started gluing herself around in places and walking along walls and stuff it was a surprise (they had expected to have to deal with the house being constantly half destroyed by acid though, so glue is nothing compared to that haha)

rip that’s all I write too... tbh I used to write original fiction before but I find myself much less constricted by fanfic? I can explore the characters here more than I can in original fiction where worldbuilding takes most effort

oh definitely paper! if I could I’d buy printed out fanfic too!

I was about 12 I think? it all started with harry potter, like everything else has, and I regret not a second of it!

sometimes when i get very excited about what i’m writing i’ll tell my fandom friends about the specific AU that i’m writing about but in terms of reading the full length fic, i don’t have anyone that i let read before anyone else. it’ll be on ao3 for everyone at the same time.

6) Where is your favourite place to write?

my desk, my pc. I can write on my phone but I like to edit as I go and it’s hard to do on the phone.

7) Favourite childhood book?

do I even need to say it? harry potter

for fun, but with the aim of possible future publication maybe?

always computer. i have only recently begun writing fics on my phone because i’ve been traveling a lot and i don’t always have my laptop on my person, but it’s still much more comfortable to sit down and type on a proper keyboard.

at my uni, yes. and it completely sucked bc they didn’t teach anything, just had us write random shit for 3 years so eh

everything? like, any random thing or thought I’m instantly trying to weave into my writing, turn it into a prompt. every new experience is just a basis for me to write on.

oh wow ok this is a difficult one bc I don’t think I even have a wip 7 pages long //sweats let me see... aha, okay, I found one! from back in march when I asked people to send me over some numbers for one of those writing memes and @theexitgarden I believe (??) sent me the prompt “I don’t think anyone could be as lovely as you” for victuuri and I kind of got a blind!victor au from it?? wELP here’s the fragment of it:

His music is vibrant in a way that he couldn't play on his piano alone and the clap of the blades that he can hear from the speakers of his TV makes him only more certain – this boy, Yuuri Katsuki, is skating to the sound of Victor's soul as if it's his own.

7) biggest pet peeve? Having to explain really basic things to people for them to just deny it repetitively (like once I had to try to explain to a popular guy in my science class that bugs have instincts and I just. boi this is a 10th grade class,, why,) 

8) thoughts on space? the ocean? what would you rather explore? SPACE is amazing and so interestingly infinite and neat to think about!! It has infinite possibilities and it’s so pretty?? I love it. But the ocean  scares me since while it’s also mysterious we know that everything has been evolving for forever now and they have organisms with so many amazingly possible things that it’s just kinda scary to me? Like we know but we don’t. Like I’d love to research animals from the ocean and it’s really beautiful but just so scary to me to actually see the deep parts of. And I’m highkey afraid of sharks to be honest

9)  what trait do you value the most in people? I don’t know if it’s really a trait but I just like people who are understanding or listen? Like people who actually listen to you even if it’s something dumb and try and understand how to help you

10) how would you describe your aesthetic? I honestly have no idea as I’m a forever going identity crisis with no aesthetic but I guess crystals for sure at least? I have two aesthetic blogs at this point for the aesthetics I kinda have so I’d have to say sometimes it’s more monochromatic like a lot of greys with purples and greens I think but sometimes its more vibrant blue/yellow/black.

1) How many works in progress do you currently have? Uh....looking at my fanfic folder I *think* about 19? So if you add in my poor neglected novel and the sequel to my poor neglected novel and my poor neglected short story, that’d be...22.

Of course, I’m only actively working on two of them now, but the others are there, watching me reproachfully every time I start something new instead of finishing one of them.

2) Do you/would you write fanfiction? *points to above ask and also 93 fanfics posted to AO3 in the past 2 years* Yeah, I’d say so. ^_^;

3) Do you prefer paper books or ebooks? I like them both for different reasons! Ebooks are nice for travel (and even for going back-and-forth to work - my kindle is much lighter than a hardcover). Paper books are nice for re-reading or checking for a quote (because trying to find specific parts of a book on my non-touchscreen, keyboard-less kindle is a pain in the ass). Plus my library system usually has a longer waiting list for the ebook version. And I do like to get physical versions of books I like enough to get signed.

4) When did you start writing? I’ve been spinning stories in my head for as long as I can remember, but my early attempts to write them down tended to fizzle out rather quickly. I heard about NaNoWriMo in college, but it always seemed like too much work to add on when I already had so much to do. So it wasn’t until I was a year out of college and facing unemployment that I really started to think seriously about writing a novel, and because I was only working part time when November rolled around, I finally tried my hand at NaNo. (I won, and ended up with a terrible and complicated unfinished novel, but everyone has to start somewhere). 

5) Do you have someone you trust that you share your work with? I was part of a writer’s group for a few years, with some ladies who I mostly didn’t know when I started out but who became friends after a while. Due to various people moving and the remaining members being bad at planning, we don’t meet anymore, but I would still feel comfortable asking them to beta-read for me if I had some original fiction to share.

For fanfic, my usual go-to beta readers are @vefanyar​ and @minutia-r​, though I have sometimes poked other people too. (And then of course once the fics are finished, they get shared with everyone who cares to look at them.)

6) Where is your favourite place to write? Weirdly enough, my most productive place to write tends to be the circ desk computer at work - for some reason ideas flow really well when I’m standing there? But since I get interrupted there pretty often, I also tend to write at the dining room table or in bed. (I’ve been avoiding the dining room recently because the television is distracting, but I also have an unfortunate tendency to fall asleep over my computer if I write in bed. Probably I should make an effort to clear my desk off).

7) Favorite childhood book? There are so many - I went through all kinds of phases where I just loved one particular book, and I read voraciously. Standouts include the Narnia series, the Redwall books, and The Ghost of Opalina by Peggy Bacon. I honestly have a harder time remembering childhood books - it’s much easier to bring to mind books I read as a young teen, in terms of long-term impact. Many of my lifelong favorite authors (Diana Wynne Jones, Robin McKinley, Terry Pratchett, Patricia C. Wrede) didn’t find their way to me until middle school.

8) Writing for fun or publication? For the last few years I’ve pretty much been writing for fun - unless you count posting fanfics as “publication”, heh. I do still dream of being published though, I just have to get back on that horse. (Or sailing ship, as the case may be).

9) Pen and paper or computer? Usually computer, though sometimes if I get stuck it helps to scribble things down on paper first. I also have occasional bouts of late-night angsty poetry, and those go on paper too.

10) Have you ever taken any writing classes? In high school I was chosen for a special summer course in writing - I think it was because we’d had to write “journals” for the first few minutes of English class every day, and rather than writing about things in my life I wrote a serial story about two of my OCs. (Ciorra the Red-haired Magic Wolf Shapeshifter and Celander the Super Powerful And Handsome Mage. Hoooo boy.) It was a cool experience to have a writing-focused class with people from other schools, but it was focused on poetry which was not as exciting for me then.

I had one creative writing class in college too, also mostly focused on poetry, which I enjoyed except for the occasional snobbery of the English/Lit majors. 

11) What inspires you to write? In fanfiction, what usually happens is I get an idea like “wouldn’t it be funny if...?” or “Well if this happened, then...” and suddenly I’ve written 500 words. Often this is the result of conversations with other people (I’m looking at you, SynS chat) or having drawn something. Fun fact, my whole SSSS Hipster Band AU happened because I doodled Reynir and Tuuri in skinny jeans.

For original fiction, it seems like characters show up in my head and won’t leave me alone until I’ve developed a whole storyline and a world for them.

It has only been a little over a year since I started watching the show and joined the Black Sails fandom. I posted my first fanart exactly one year ago and it was the one above. Thus far I have drawn over 100 of them. I tried different mediums and styles, both for practice and for capturing the essence of the things I wanted to share. Some of them are great, some are silly, some are a bit out of character or not so good in other ways and some ended up surprising me in many ways. All are nonetheless very precious to me.

Under the read more there's a list of all my doodles thus far. Most of them feature Flint, Silver or both of them (there will be more of the other characters in the future, no worries). I have to admit I laughed quite a lot while going through these again. This is a really long post.

This is a list to show what sort of things there are and also for my own amusement and archiving purposes. The list is in chronological order, from first to the latest.

I find it endearing how this list ends with the balcony one. Like a parallel (ha!) to the first one, where Flint and Silver are having a private moment on board of a ship, although it is a different ship and at a different time. A year ago I had no idea where this all would lead me and how much I would learn and get to experience *pats my past-self in the back awkwardly and fondly*

Looking back at them (doodles) I feel both proud and slightly embarrassed of my enthusiasm. I have never done anything like this for any other fandom. I have never felt so much and had such an urge to engage in this sort of thing.

This show, its creators and crew, this fandom. Just something unbeliavable.  I cannot find the words to say how much I appreciate you all. The brilliancy, the humour, the love in all kinds of forms. I am so glad I stumbled on this show (it was a gif or a fanvid about ep 2.05 that made me aware of this show, btw. I cannot remember it clearly anymore and for a moment I thought Crossbones was a pilot for Black Sails and almost missed everything, but that's a story for another time...)

Know this: I have loved sharing this experience (the show, the fandom) with you and I appreciate everything you have given to me or shared with me. I will treasure this. (I apologize not thanking more people individually, but this post would’ve never reached its end otherwise).

Dell and the false Beatrice slipped out into the night, the city still awake with twinkling, wide open lit eyes and an ongoing hum of traffic and motion. It was mid-January and the breath on the streets was cold and viciously sharp. Dell was wary of the city at night and the nightmares that could slip around as people slept. She kept her hand in her pocket, nestling the grip of the gun in her sweaty palm, and looked every shadow over for hidden figures. The false Beatrice walked steadily at a brisk, efficient pace. Dell strived to stay at her side.

“You know the way to this … Prince character?”

“Yes, Beatrice wrote a set of directions. The Prince gave them to me to have her thoughts.”

“She … ? That’s perfect! Let me see them.”

The false Beatrice hesitated a moment, her pace hiccuping a step. Then, she stopped and reached up under the shirt of her uniform. Dell frowned at the depth her hand reached in and an ill feeling filled her at the sight of such a frantic search of her insides. Finally, the arm emerged from the scramble of mixed objects, clutching in the spindly fingers, a beat up spiral bound notebook.

Dell took it and noticed a few anonymous objects had scattered to the sidewalk with the messy search. They started walking again. Dell used the streetlights to look at the notebook and saw that they were Beatrice’s notes from biology class. Flipping through the pages, she only found messy handwriting barely capturing the definitions and details of cellular reproduction, binary fission, and mitosis, eccetera. She saw nothing that looked like directions. She almost thought a map was drawn along the borders of a page, but realized that they were just Beatrice’s drawings from a boring section of the class.

Keeping the notebook pressed to her chest, Dell followed the false Beatrice, hoping it had some intel she could not decipher herself. They walked in silence, following straight paths for what felt like endless moments while the few corners they took puffed up small feelings of progress in Dell’s gut. They passed one or two other creatures haunting through the city night. She secured her nerve in the hard handle of the gun, but she was surprised when there came no harassment, no danger, not even acknowledgment.

“Are we getting close?” Dell asked, her patience and nerves run near to their limits, “I can’t even tell what part of town we’re in. I feel like I’m in an Escher drawing.”

The false Beatrice suddenly stopped and turned to Dell.

“I … I don’t know the way.”

Dell gaped. “You what?! Where have you been going this whole time?!” She violently gestured the notebook, the flimsy pages whipping against the air.

“I’m sorry, ‘Mom’!” She said suddenly, the familiar tone punching into the words, “I gave you the notebook, so why don’t you get us there?”

Dell stared wide-eyed at the false Beatrice. She seemed just as stunned, her hand awkwardly clamping over her mouth.

“I’ll look at the notebook again.”

The false Beatrice nodded, shame somehow legible on its strange face. Dell drew closer to a street lamp throwing out a dim pool of light. There, she flipped through the notebook, page by page, studying each word and line carefully. In this context, it still seemed useless to her. The notes were just notes, with no evidence of code or direction or anything to indicate where they should go to find the real Beatrice and the Prince of Crows. The shapes and drawings in the margins seemed like tauntings, written from the Beatrice of the past to her mother in the present.

Dell looked hopelessly at the false Beatrice.

“Look again,” it said, “closer.”

Grinding the heel of one hand against a tired eye, Dell looked. Again, those margins called her attention. Only then, did she realize that a series of overlapping and shaded blobs was meant to be Beatrice’s depiction of a camouflage pattern, the same pattern of army uniforms and backwoods duck hunters. Another page showed doodles of dog tags, each displaying ‘LONDON, BEATRICE R,’ and another had drawings of helmets and other military equipment.

Dell didn’t think much of them. For the most part, she wondered how much biology Beatrice was taking in with all this drawing going on. Flipping back to the pages of camouflaged margins, she studied the pattern. She pushed aside her disapproval and started to see more in the shading that separated one blob from another. There was something behind the greys that almost seemed like writing. Dell leaned in closer, so close that her breath rattled the page and to her astonishment, blew away some of the grey.

It flew into the air like ash and before she could let the shock pause her, Dell blew across the notebook page, scattering away the sketched camouflage and leaving only Beatrice’s messy handwriting.

“She wrote something, beneath the drawings.”

They read like bits and pieces from a diary entry.

‘I managed to get in sometime to run at the gym - I told Mom I was studying with friends after school. My time looks OK, but I need to be faster.’

‘I talked with Mr. Twelvetrees. He thinks I should just come out and tell Mom what I want to do, but he doesn’t really know about Dad and everything, he doesn’t know her like I do. I’m scared that she still won’t understand. Supposedly, Twelvetrees was in the SAS, British special forces. That surprised me. He won’t talk much about it, but I was able to get some small stories out of him. It kind of makes me think of Dad and what it would’ve been like to talk to him about this stuff.’

Between these segments, Dell cursed Twelvetrees and Beatrice’s father while she was at it. However, she took it back when the next line began with a ‘He’ that was neither Andre London nor Gilbert Twelvetrees.

‘He left me another note, at the window like always. His handwriting is awful, scratchy as if he’s using his fingernails to write. We’ve been talking more and more lately. I told him about my plans and about wanting to leave. I think that might’ve been a mistake. I barely know him, but he’s so easy to talk to. It’s a relief actually. He seems to eager to hear what I have to say. It’s weird, but I trust him.’

Dell’s heart started thundering in her chest.

‘He says he thinks he can help me - the thing with Mom and all that. He wants to meet me in person. I’m not completely stupid to just go, but at the same time, I kind of want to see him too.’

‘Every note is asking me to come meet him. I want to talk about other things, but it always comes back to that. Is it alright to make a friend like this? I mean, a guy who leaves you notes instead of texting or emailing or anything that a normal person would do. I don’t know. I wish I could ask someone about it, Twelvetrees or even Mom, but I don’t think they’d get it. It’s so stupid, but I really want to meet him.’

‘He said there was an abandoned building on Second Street. He said that, but I know for a fact, there isn’t. It’s a busy street and I pass it just about every day. There’s no way there’s just some abandoned building sitting there. I told him, but he says if I go there, I’ll see what he’s talking about. He wants me to go to that building and to meet him on the roof.’

Dell’s heart stopped.

‘I’m going after school today. I told Mom I was meeting up with friends. I’m surprised that one still works on her with how much I’ve used it.’

“There it is.”

The voice of the false Beatrice made Dell jump. When she looked up from the notebook, her gaze caught on the street sign just on the edge of her pool of light. It read Second Street and just beyond it, there loomed a great building that Dell swore had not been there before when they had stopped.

It looked like an apartment building, an older, derelict sister to the London’s own residence. It was a hefty red brick business with spindly zig-zagging fire escapes growing up along the windows. Unlike their own, this one had lost much of the glass out of its windows, gaping eye sockets that reminded Dell of earlier events. Despite the dark, she could see filth smudged across the building’s facade. Vegetation, or the dried brown skeletons of what used to be, needled up out of the dusty, dead earth around the perimeter. This ‘garden’ of sorts was further accented by piles and heaps of trash and junk.

SeroBaku kills me in the sweetest way and SeroKiri brings me back to life when I feel dead inside and SeroBakuKiri is like heaven on earth tbh I love those ships they make me feel warm !!!

YESSSSSSSS Aizawa and Mic are high school friends so I’m pretty sure it’s canon they waste time together, Blood King and Dog Hound are canon pals too so they also most probs chill together too! Blood King is also the same age as Aizawa and Mic so they probs used to go to school together too!!! And with Dog Hound being 32, Midnight being 31 and Cementoss and Thirteen being 28 they’re more or less all the same age, so I like to think they spend free time together~ some scenes with the teachers make me think they’re good pals with the older ones too, it’s a really fun group of people to be honest!

Yes she is!!!!! I like to think Jirou’s got at least basic knowledge for how to play any instrument ever, so when she’s laying around in the common room once she got used to her friends listening to her play she’d bring with herself the smaller and easier ones to carry! An ukulele has a super nice sound and is small enough to bring around the dorms haha

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!! thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And I think I already answered this question? At some point? But I can’t find it, so in general my take is that I highly doubt Bakugou’s body isn’t built to withstand and not take damage from his own quirk (since his hands are made to hold up with it, I feel like the rest of his body is tailored around his quirk too), but I’m always up for disabled characters and the idea of Bakugou signing is beautiful to me, so I don’t mind the AU one bit! Dunno if I’ll ever draw for it tho, drawing jsl when I don’t know it is hard. I know that from experience.

That said, I do find the fics in which Bakugou becomes deaf because of his quirk a bit hard to believe most of the times? Because in all of them his ears are the only things taking damage for the continuous use of his quirk and I just sit here like, his eyes should be taking damage too. Normal eyes aren’t made to withstand explosions and stun grenades every day all day, so if his ears aren’t biologically made to hold against his quirk his eyes shouldn’t be either. 

Like, I read those fics and I find them real hard to believe because the authors aren’t pushing it hard enough, for me it’s either no damage at all or hoh AND visually impaired Bakugou, boy can’t be only half built to withstand his quirk that’d just be silly haha but that’s probably just me, the AU is Good 👍

He started doing so once he found himself with no hoodies left - he isn’t the type to just steal people’s clothes, I think, but if Bakugou started doing so first he’d probably find it acceptable to consider all their hoodies fair game hahaha
