she's used to the calls at all hours; both of their jobs tend to require it. when the ringtone shatters her sleep, she initially thinks it might be hers - but she and nick have different ringtones to be able to tell them apart (though generally if the situation is bad enough, both phones are ringing one right after the other). when she vaguely recognizes it as not hers, she has to nudge nick to get him to answer - he's exhausted and she hates to do it, but there's little other option. helen presses her face into the pillow, savoring the warmth of her husband that will likely soon be gone - phone calls at 2am mean she won't see him again until well after breakfast.
helen hears his end of the call vaguely, humming softly when his arm wraps around her. another goodbye until the late morning, likely. she doesn't want him to leave (he's only been home hours at least). she can't fault his work, because she's just as passionate about her own - but sometimes it's tempting to retire early just so they can both get some much needed rest. the way he relays the call to her makes her understand this is important though, and helen almost groans when she hears her own phone go off. sometimes she really hates being on call.
it's the trauma surgeon on duty on the other end, his information relaying mostly what nick had already said (the hospital has learned she tends to find out information faster through her husband). "give me a few; i'll be right there." she murmurs, already throwing blankets off her and shuddering at the temperature difference - nick is always a welcome warmth against the cold of the winter; even with the heat, she prefers her husband's furnace of a body and without him in bed, it feels merely empty. so she sets about grabbing a new pair of scrubs and overcoat from the closet, pulling them on with a practiced ease in the dim light of the room. she throws her hair up and out of her face, sitting back on the edge of the bed to pull her socks and shoes on.
"be safe." she murmurs, catching his hand briefly when he presses the kiss to her forehead. as tired as they both are, duty calls. maybe once this is over, they'll be able to enjoy the holidays this year. without interruptions. "i love you, too." helen smiles softly before she lets him go, and follows him out shortly after.
the hospital is usually quiet in the early morning hours and that night is truthfully no different except the critical patient she finds upon arrival. she's elbow deep in his chest cavity barely 15 minutes after she arrives, trying to stop internal bleeding. they lose him twice, and frankly she isn't sure he's going to survive - but she does the best she can, closes him, and sends him off to the icu intubated and unconscious. she can't get the bullet out without risking further injury, but he's still alive and she'll consider it a win. she's hoping she'll be able to bring him out of the coma in a few more hours so nick and his team can interview him.
helen is grabbing a cup of lukewarm tea and headed to her office when her phone vibrates, and she sees the text from nick.
[sent - 2:32] to nick: got it. he's still alive, barely. doing what i can. i'm hopeful he'll be awake when you get here. have you caught the guy? [sent - 2:33] to nick: i'm alright. exhausted. is it too late to take the day off?
winter settled over old city. the heat of summer was long forgotten as snow grasped the aging landscape. the snow gave the city the appearance of a picture perfect town, however there were secrets hidden in the shadows. a watching gaze tracking it’s targets over the passing months, learning their schedules and routines—it was almost too easy when they were unsuspecting, wasn’t it? the call should come in soon enough, the breadcrumbs left behind had gone unnoticed, even the media hadn’t picked up the similarities in the recent crime wave that had taken the city hostage. many should heed the warning of not traveling alone. it wasn’t going to save anyone—collateral damage, keep them busy, unsuspecting. it was the thought behind the game he was playing, toying with them in minuscule ways, he wasn’t surprised they hadn’t noticed–however he made a mistake, one he didn’t catch that would alter the game he was playing against the doctor and the detective, a mistake he would need to correct before the evidence would reveal him.
it wasn’t his phone ringing that had woke him. he’d hardly slept in the last two days, running another case, another robbery ending horribly. it felt as if his case load had doubled in the last few months. sleep had taken such a deep hold on nick, he’d blocked out the sound of it going off on the bedside table. it was the elbow gently prodding him awake that woke him. “what… what happened?” the reply is groggy. it’s 2am, he doesn’t want to be awake already. the voice beside him mentions something about his phone. nick contemplates ignoring it but knows it will just continue to interrupt his sleep if he does. a heavy sigh, he turns over to turn the light on reaching haphazardly for the phone.
“there better be a good—” he’s quiet for a long moment as he listens. “ramon, are you sure? … alright, i’ll be there in ten, have some coffee waiting.” another heavy sigh, he rolls back over to his place bringing his arm around her. nuzzling his face into her shoulder, he didn’t want to leave—he had just got home a few hours prior and shared dinner with helen.
it felt as if crime hasn’t stopped, not since the event at the hospital a few months ago. almost as if that event had triggered some sort of cataclysmic event where crime was on the rise. his case load had doubled—he almost felt regret leaving routine patrol for the detective division.
“I have to go.” he mumbles followed by another sigh. nick was exhausted, far more than he has been in a long time. “there’s been another robbery, one of the victims survived, headed for OC general in critical condition. you might get a call in—” as her phone began to vibrate, he reached over handing it to her before pulling himself from the bed to gather himself.
Even with the heat on in the house, the air was still chilly. Finding himself something in the closet and a warm jacket, he laid it across a chair near the window. disappearing into the bathroom, he splashed cold water on his face to wake himself up. coffee wasn’t going to be enough to keep him going for the next twelve hours or so. he was able to hear her talking but couldn’t make out what it was. his current assignment wasn’t going anywhere, however the case on her hands would most likely have her up and leaving as well.
returning to the bedroom his gaze fell on her. “you too?” he questions, plopping himself down in the chair to pull on his socks and shoes. “i’ll bring you some tea and something to eat once I clear the scene. I refuse to work for the holiday’s this year.” he was a bit grumpy, tired and wished to sleep in for once. “we can have some breakfast if you are clear with the victim.” Standing, he pulls the jacket on around him, he should have known that sleep would not be an option. nick felt it the moment he left the PD hours ago. after sliding his phone into his pocket, he rounded her side of the bed. “i will see you in a couple of hours.” leaning over her, his lips brushed against her forehead. “dress warm when you leave, i love you.” lips tugging into a smile, he straightens himself zipping up his jacket as he turns to leave.
it didn’t take long to get to the scene, he was there for nearly an hour before finding the identification of the victim that headed to the hospital. retrieving his phone, he shot off a quick text to let her know the name of their john doe.
[Sent - 02:30]:Helen: his name is ricardo escobar. ID say 24 years old. I’ll be by in a couple of hours to check on him. [Sent - 02:31]:Helen: and you.

Sometimes I think that when Agatha says 'sometimes boys die' is her finally coming to terms with Rio only doing her job and while it's not full forgiveness yet it might be the start. It's understanding, at least.
Also, Agatha watching over Billy in episode 4 when he's hurt and sleeping because that's how Nicky died, in his sleep. 🥺

AGATHA ALL ALONG SENTENCE STARTERS
❛ You don't seem like yourself. ❜
❛ If you wanna be in control, you can be. ❜
❛ Is this really how you see yourself? ❜
❛ Do you remember why you hate me? ❜
❛ The things that you're roasting me for are the things that make me dangerous. ❜
❛ How long have I been here? ❜
❛ Call me "nosy," I'll cut out your tongue. ❜
❛ Can you put on some clothes? 'Cause you... 'Cause you're naked. ❜
❛ Do you remember pain? It kind of tickles, doesn't it? ❜
❛ Maybe I can't kill you, but I can make you wish you were dead. ❜
❛ I am not the only one that wants to see you dead. ❜
❛ Ugh! It really warms the heart. ❜
❛ You don't have a heart. ❜
❛ Be sure to tell the vengeance-seekers I said hi. ❜
❛ That's why I saved you from the spell you were under. ❜
❛ Wherever you are, a coven there shall be. ❜
❛ I feel really optimistic about this. ❜
❛ So you're a bit of a kook. Every witch has their process. ❜
❛ Witches like you are the reason people think we poison apples, and steal children, and eat babies. ❜
❛ Don't you miss the glory days? ❜
❛ The path you're currently on leads nowhere. ❜
❛ Hey! Where do you keep your jade eggs? I'm fresh out of marbles, and my pelvic floor is all over the place. ❜
❛ I haven't seen you since I made a really pointed effort to never run into you again.❜
❛ Historically, we as a group don't do well in courtrooms. ❜
❛ People like you are dangerous. ❜
❛ Are there any real witches in the house? ❜
❛ What a team of rejects. ❜
❛ This is just a really, really, really horrible party. ❜
❛ It's giving "middle-aged second chance at love" vibes and I'm here for it. ❜
❛ Okay, so a witch is really just another name for a bad girl, is that right? ❜
❛ I'm not saying that I wanna join the club or anything, but I would drink the blood of a virgin if it would smooth out some of these wrinkles. ❜
❛ So the hallucinations seem chill. ❜
❛ I can't protect you! ❜
❛ I do not wanna die here. This is not where I die. ❜
❛ They can take your power, but they can't take your knowledge. ❜
❛ I didn't think you had it in you. ❜
❛ We were supposed to look out for each other, but we didn't. That was our fatal mistake. ❜
❛ I wish we could go home. ❜
❛ People can't be replaced. ❜
❛ Are we in trouble? Like, more than we were ten minutes ago? ❜
❛ Honestly, I don't know how to feel. Do I hate her? Or do I want her phone number? ❜
❛ I'm feeling impatient. I'm feeling like I wanna cause some damage. ❜
❛ Once vengeance is loosed, you can't reel it back in. ❜
❛ The only way to end a curse is to face it. ❜
❛ Sad is better than angry. ❜
❛ You don't have to know a person's name to know who they are. ❜
❛ Are you really defending a noted serial killer, you creepy lurker? ❜
❛ The moral of the story, kids, is always finish what you started. Also, mercy is overrated. ❜
❛ Who better to commune with the dead than someone who's put so many in the grave? ❜
❛ I mean, or we could just slit her throat. ❜
❛ But we were getting along, weren't we? We were clicking. There was unity. ❜
❛ She's possessed! For real this time! ❜
❛ I hate ghosts. ❜
❛ Why do you hate me still?❜
❛ You were born evil. ❜
❛ Please take me with you. ❜
❛ She was protecting you. But you don't deserve it. ❜
❛ I couldn't... I couldn't control it. ❜
❛ Death comes for us all. ❜
❛ You're so much like your mother. ❜
❛ We love you more than we could ever hope to communicate in human words. ❜
❛ You don't need to be a psychic to see that you're a good egg. ❜
❛ Enjoy the now, baby. It's the only thing that's certain. ❜
❛ Nothing in my life has felt normal until I met you. ❜
❛ I want you to know the real me. ❜
❛ You're so adorably trusting. ❜
❛ Word to the wise, don't go sniffing around there. ❜
❛ You seriously don't know what kind of crazy that lady eats for breakfast. ❜
❛ I panicked, so I ran. ❜
❛ Could we, like, maybe not, with the physical violence? ❜
❛ Power doesn't interest me. ❜
❛ Yeah. Well, what you did was ehhh … but life goes on. Yours, anyway. ❜
❛ I mean, I've killed...uh...my share. But you don't see it holding me back. ❜
❛ Don't you dare feel guilty about your talent. You survived. ❜
❛ So you broke the rules. Big deal. That's what kept you alive. That's what makes you special. ❜
❛ I don't need you anymore. I don't know if I ever did. ❜
❛ If you really wanna finish this together, just know that I do not trust you. At all. ❜
❛ You'll get a nosebleed trying that hard to read my mind. ❜
❛ Hey, you want straight answers, ask a straight lady. ❜
❛ Tell me what more I should see, when I look at you. ❜
❛ You know, we really hated each other from the beginning. But now...I love you, guys. ❜
❛ I'm a forgotten woman. ❜
❛ Death comes for us all. It is what we all have in common. ❜
❛ I can see all the pieces falling into place. The gaps are filling in. ❜
❛ I'm telling you now because soon I'm not going to remember any of this. ❜
❛ I hope you'll join me. ❜
❛ I needed you. My coven. ❜
❛ What can I say? I like the bad boys. ❜
❛ I loved being a witch. ❜
❛ That's it? That's all the... That's all the time I get? ❜
❛ This can't be the end. It has to be the beginning. ❜
❛ I watch you. Just as closely as you watch everyone else. ❜
❛ No one in history has had special treatment like you. ❜
❛ You gave me nothing. You took. ❜
❛ Why do you let them believe those things about you, hmm? ❜
❛ What fresh horrors await us! ❜
❛ You seem relaxed. Usually at this point you're either complaining loudly or freaking out loudly. ❜
❛ It's nice. That feeling when your body knows it's safe. ❜
❛ Sometimes...boys die. ❜
❛ Congratulations, my love! I'm sorry I didn't have a ribbon for you to run through. ❜
❛ Why don't you want me? ❜
❛ Power looks good on you. ❜
❛ You do this and I will hate you forever. ❜
❛ Please let him live. Please, my love! ❜
❛ If you want to survive, get used to this feeling. ❜
❛ I cannot protect you from what's coming. ❜
❛ I saw you die. ❜
❛ And now, I'm a ghost. Can you dig it? ❜
❛ By the way, I did not sacrifice myself for you. I took a calculated risk. ❜
❛ You're making fun of me. This is just one of your tricks. ❜
❛ You have something of mine. I know you took it. ❜
❛ Why are you still here? Why won't you just die? ❜
❛ I'm sure he would forgive you for... whatever you did. ❜
❛ We could make a good team. You and me. ❜

in another life, they're still in that cottage. nicky is laughing at something with rio and agatha is watching them both, besotted with the family she's found after being cast out by her own. the sun warms the room, there are purple violets in a vase on the counter, and it is perfect. a life never lived, a daydream at best. reality is far more cruel. agatha has longed to lose herself in that daydream for some centuries and while she's done her best to bury the sentiment, rio's company brings it all hurtling back with such a fierceness that it makes her heart ache. even in the bullshit life she'd had in westview, nicky had been a part of it in some way. he has a room in her house. trophies. the rabbit, named by him.
agatha knows that nicky was not the only one meant to die by that lake. in the throes of labor with him, the pain and the terror of being alone - it wouldn't surprise her if rio had been there to claim her life too. and perhaps in some twisted, painful way agatha has been fighting death since, and nicky had died for it too. a life for a life. and now she's faced with the same issue - billy is not dead, and neither is she, and agatha will be damned if she doesn't continue taking what life for herself that she can, to carry on.
oh, i miss you. is what she wants to say, but to say it would admit the vulnerability she is constantly at war with. she watches rio pace, half wondering if she will leave, trailing more violets behind her that seem to be taking over her yard. it's as if rio can't stand to be near her and agatha cannot blame her - their last conversation alone had been painful and the fight even worse. they're on even ground now, power wise.
agatha cards a hand into her hair as dark tendrils fall into her face - but a shock of white catches her attention among the curls. a new streak of silvery-white in her hair, a visible and permanent reminder of her latest brush with death. clearly a touch of magic had crossed between them in that kiss, agatha stealing just enough for the appearance of her death, and to return herself to life.
it's not the first time they've exchanged magic - nicky had been the last.
"i don't think you want me dead anyway." agatha's lips curl into a false, forced smirk. slotting her invisible armor right back into place to protect those emotions. it's safer that way. "i'm just vindictive enough to become a ghost; i'll harass you all eternity."
maybe eventually she will. and maybe eventually at the end of the world, end of life and the universe, she will get her daydream. when rio is free of her duty as death, agatha's spirit will move on and they will be with their son.
she takes another step toward rio, invading her personal space again. her gaze instinctively darts down to her lips, then back up to those beautiful dark eyes.
"i could still do it." she murmurs. "give you my soul. put your damned balances back in to order." (not that agatha gives a shit about whatever comic power decides that shit, much less what happens if it's out of sorts). "but you know good and well my soul was already yours a long time ago."
THE HEAVY BEATING IN HER CHEST is unfamiliar. in recent years, she hasn't really felt it at all. agatha reaches up to wipe a tear away and she feels a part of it crack, a stinging pain deep inside of her that she can no longer ignore. these days, she has almost forgotten that any form of hers can even cry, and as she blinks the tears slowly away she wonders why she has been cursed with emotion at all. the ground continues to bloom with flowers, curling around both of their feet, she cannot stop the natural flow of it even if she tried.
her eyes flicker between agatha's as she listens, recognizing the privilege of seeing her alive in this moment. agatha's hands drops from her face and despite the fact that rio is colder than a normal human already, she feels a chill run through her. she thought she'd moved on from this long ago. some might think that death herself does not even know how to experience grief, but that would be a lie. the grief for nicholas remains constant, but the grief of losing agatha had been something she'd been actively trying to move from. (she failed, clearly.)
she adjusts the cloak around her shoulders, pulling it tighter around herself. she does not respond, not knowing what to say. suddenly, the vicious fighter of mere moments before becomes timid, and death does not speak. not just yet, at least. she wonders to herself, very briefly, if she is going to let agatha go. if she can.
finally, she shrugs, taking steps away to put distance between them, pacing a few feet like she always does. her eyes speak to her pain but her voice picks up a sarcastic tone to it, and she does not let her emotions show in her face. "oh, i don't know," she replies, jutting her chin out as she pretends to consider it. "i coooould just stop chasing you. let you die slowly and naturally, keep you on your toes."
her pace ends, and she comes to a stop in front of agatha again. stop hating me, she wants to beg. understand that all that i did for you, i did out of love.
she will never get that resolution, though, and she's tried to make peace with that. death has always been doomed to be alone. she's known this from the start. if all she gets is this to make her feel alive if this sort of back and forth, she will take it. "but that would be no fun!" she pouts for real now, crossing her arms over her chest in a weirdly over dramatic gesture. "come on, baby, don't you miss it already?"
she's laying it on thick. despite the fact that technically agatha did not deliver on her end of the deal, she knows that she'll respect agatha's wishes after she dies not to be there. she is nothing if not honest.

she's more annoyed than afraid of their current situation, wriggling in an attempt to free her hands from the rough bindings. the species as a whole is not at warp capabilities, but they certainly have weapons that hurt and jail cells that hold. she hasn't yet figured out why they've been locked up other than they could be seen as hostile - their captors aren't exactly vocal in their reasons, leaving her to turn things over and over in her mind.
"it's not ideal." kathryn observes to the only other person in the room. chekov had been with her when they'd been captured, and she has yet to find out what happened to the rest of the away team - if they made it back to the ship, or were being held elsewhere. she paces, hands still tied behind her back as she continues to work at the ropes to loosen them further. she's been searching for any scant piece of something sharp in the cell that might be used to cut them free.
"i don't expect they have the technology to block the teleporter if the ship can get a lock on us. problem is, the signal is probably scrambled because we're underground. no doubt they're scanning since they've lost contact with us - if we can get back above ground, they should be able to grab us."
