One issue I have with the whole 'Wildbow said Aura Theory isn't True' is that the whole theory comes from, or at least got big, because of a comment he made in reply to a fan comment.

Now, I have read a reddit thread where he said something to the effect of 'I was tired, not paying attention and didn't give the right answer' or something to that effect. And like...

Okay, fine. He made a mistake. Took him three years to notice and correct it, or something like that, but fine.

But that calls into question literally any other Word of God statement he's ever provided, at least in answer to a question or comment. Because he could have bene tired and not paying attention and given a wrong answer then.

And since so much of the wormverse is understood through WoG because of the tight confines of much of both Worm and Ward in terms of POV, that means... a lot of what we think we know about the Wormverse could be 100% wrong.

Like, how many landmines are littered around in his WoG that he's never caught because they never caught on, never became popular fic trends or correcting them never became central to a sequel or later part of the work?

At that point, should we care about his WoG at all, when he could just reveal he was wrong?

Like, to be clear, I don't think Aura Theory is a necessary explanation for Amy's obsession with Victoria. Nor do I think, even if it was true, it would actually mean Amy didn't still actively choose (albeit while in the midst of a psychological break after the sort of shit that would break most people under the sort of stress she was under).

I do think Aura theory is interesting, and it's worth exploring in a fanfic (because fanfics can be 'hey, what if X that isn't true in canon was'), and I wish there wasn't a contingent of fans quite so rabid about constantly screeching 'it's not canon' anytime it comes up in discussion, but...

Really. Either Wildbow just up and retconned the Aura or he doesn't police his WoG properly and it calls everything else he's ever said into doubt, unless it's specifically backed up by material in the text that can be taken as 100% unbiased/reliable.

Or we can just not care about WoG at all, which is really the best way to do things in almost every fandom, because ultimately:

SORRY MY BRAINROT IS INTENSE, to try to resolve this im going to write a little something! it's obvious dream (i might just use utmv names for the sake of my terrible memory) is the founder and top dog at justice reigns, i know ink is his mercenary and is the only one to take direct orders from him, but where does that place finch? is he above ink at 2nd or under ink at 3rd? if you have the time, could you maybe explain briefly what they think of eachother? moreso ink & finch and dream & ink for the sake of my plot, they'll be interacting and i want it to be as accurate as possible

ok so, first off, ink isn't the only one to take direct orders from dream, if I said that in the past it may have been a mistake. (who the heck is getting orders from dream if only ink is taking orders from him hahaha) ink, for the most part, only takes direct orders from dream, not is the only one who does. for his status, ink is not part of the hierarchy in JR; he doesn't have the authority to give anyone orders. if dream tells ink to take orders from the justice division, he has to take orders from the justice division, but the justice division doesn't have power over ink by default. if JR has a hard or specific mission, they might send ink. (I feel like it would make sense for there to be more JR mercenaries than just ink. but it's a little late to contemplate changes to the lore)

finch is an officer of the justice division, but I don't know what exactly his status is supposed to be. I've said he's a captain before, but I feel like it only makes sense if he's 31, aka his fatal flaws age. so, take with that what you will. he could be young at 24 and be far ahead for his age but not in a position of full authority (think: a senior who gets put in charge of a smaller group, not the guy who goes to meetings) or he could be 31 and be a captain. that aside, I imagine that finch and ink don't really talk on a casual basis. their impressions of each other are probably limited to "that guy again," while passing each other in the hallway and likely some awkward small talk. they probably have worked together a few times and finch probably thinks that ink is too irresponsible and doesn't fully understand why ink works such an important job. (because he gets it done, somehow) they're kind of polar opposites. which does leave some room for an interesting dynamic if you think it's interesting.

as for whatever ink and dream have going on, they're kind of friends even though they're technically not supposed to be. in ds there is a tangible barrier of authority and power that would be difficult to overcome. not impossible, but difficult. they do still kind of have that "you're just my boss" relationship in fatal flaws which creates a little distance, but I think they could become friends more easily there because arthur isn't immortal and hasn't used any godlike power to gain a following.

Generally don’t love it when people go ‘no actually they’re the exact opposite with no room for a middle ground’ in response to bad fanon cos it tends to be reductive and reactive in a way that doesn't hold true to the character any more than the original bad fanon did. That being said I do wholeheartedly believe cass gives the worst advice out of any of the bats. Like actively has-been-banned-from-giving-advice bad. Steph was worried about her grades once and Cass told her to kidnap her professor so he couldn't score the final. Any Cass-offered solution falls under the general categories of either a) punch it or b) ignore it.

One of the big reasons may be what you've already stated, with him being one of gmmtv's token straight leads (+ the f4 hype just further amplified the image), so up til now i don't think anyone ever genuinely thought he would do a bl

and i guess the situation is different with sky, because a large portion of fans are most familiar with gmmtv and its structure, vs sky's background, so they don't have as much of a preconceived notion?

also nani tends to be a bit more reserved and "shy" with their more shippy interactions, which some people interpret as him being uncomfortable or unwilling, but i don't rlly agree, i think that's just the way he is lol (and it has nothing to do with his likelihood of doing a bl) 😅

I become so intractably stressed during election season and it's especially frustrating because there's nothing I can do about it. When something is bothering me, what usually helps me the most is to do something to try to make it better. Unfortunately for me, I have essentially no outlet by which to make this problem better. I've already voted early, but also I live in Indiana so I have limited confidence in how much good that can do on a grand scale. Typically my options for Things To Do to make myself feel better would be donating to campaigns that matter to me or doing some kind of voter outreach to make it so it's not just me making the problem better. Ok, but putting my Serious Lore™ hat on, like I said in the previous ask I answered, I still think that cut content has some lore relevance… re: Rykard, the identity of Daedicar has been changed and thus the specific scenario of the old description is now explicitly non-canon.

However, Daedicar’s identity is the only thing about the description that now contradicts canon; everything else about the description still feels in accordance with Rykard’s character: The description implies that Rykard was frequently sleeping with people in his employ during the inquisition era, which absolutely tracks with everything else we know about him — his manor is decadently decorated and he dresses extravagantly (even as a snake), and he seems to have a vain, self-absorbed streak (owns multiple portraits of himself and hangs them on his walls)… this man is a hedonist. Plus, his relationship with Tanith makes it clear that he’s into nasty violent freaks like 1.0 Daedicar would’ve been.

So, if the other character-related details of this cut description are still in accordance with Rykard’s character, then it isn’t a stretch to believe that his bisexuality is also an established facet of his character intended by the writers. His sister Ranni is also textually bi, as she can fall in love with the player regardless of gender. So basically Bikard may not be explicitly canon in the text of the game anymore but it’s still Real. In my Serious Lore™ opinion

Now that I've grown more conscious of how I design characters, a lot of the doubles I've shown kinda sorta super need some tweaking because of it. You've seen it with Gen here but i feel that design was bit too rough for someone like Gen. It's mostly his head that I redesign as his clothes stay the same.

Hi anon! Pinning down canon is a nightmare on a good day.

Sometimes adherence to the particularities of canon can be our downfall. We spend too much time wondering if Jason's reaction to X event lines up with X comic run that we lose track of the emotion of a scene entirely.

For the Batfam and Superbat, there are so many competing characterizations in DC canon as it is. Ones where Bruce is a cold and distant parent, for example, and ones where he is kind and playful, etc etc.

If you're worried about your characters being, well, in-character, don't. Worry about your characters being well-rounded, being emotionally complex, and conveying your story where it needs to go.

My ultimate advice is to write your scene/story, and double back later to make sure things line up as best they can. Some details -- like whether Alfred would say "isn't" versus "is not" -- are easy, while others -- trying to make Bruce sound/feel like X comic run or Y fic -- are more complex.

Between you and me, anon, canon is a nightmare. My personal characterizations for the Batfamily and/or Superbat are an amalgamation of various characterizations I've read/absorbed, all averaged out against each other. I pull out pieces I like and discard the details I don't.

At the end of the day, your version of the characters is what matters. People might not like it, and that's their choice. What matters is if you like how you're writing your characters.
