AstrologyObs: Appearance
Disclaimer:my opinion
Cancers are the cutie of the zodiac!! Round facial features. Cozy, comfy, warm and inviting. They may look great in Asian make up styles or old classic make up styles. Bohemian. 70s look or even 50s.
Gemini have a cheekiness to them that’s apparent in their features. They look like troublemakers in a wholesome way. They usually have quite sharp smiles. They have a very on the go energy , and I think they can get away with being sporty or even messy. But they also look so good with a basic 90s style which reflects their logical mind.they may also have a “rebel” “punk” or even Avril Lavigne vibe.
Pisces just feel like a wave of tranquility and I just want to chill with them. They have such dreamy eyes that make you want to get lost in them. They look so good with shimmers, in make up and clothes. Also metallic colours. Glowy make up. MERMAID. They suit modern style of clothing a lot.
Sagittarius, the free spirits, can actually look great with more revealing looks. They can get away with over the top things, and they will make it look cool, like their way of dressing is part of their philosophy. I feel like Sagittarius also has a lowkey sense of humour to their style, “ I did it for the fun of it, why not” also look so good in red:::
Scorpio.. you guys just remind me of Johnny Depp in pirates of the Caribbean, looks wise that is. Very alluring, darkness around the eyes. You change and transform people so no one will ever experience another you again. Your dress sense may have elements of danger. Leather jackets. A sense of shock, uniqueness . Darkness. Alternative or femme fatale.
Aries yall look good in office things, or just sophisticated and sharp styles tbh. There’s an angularity to you but it looks very cool and dramatic, it makes you interesting and cool. Lush, and sharp.it gives lip gloss and matte outfit vibes.
Capricorn, your organisation influences your dress sense so much and i actually think that Capricorn represents a mainstream dress sense or something conventional and basic you see everyday. So you look good in that. Simple. Classy. Timeless. Capricorns with Aquarius placements may disagree
Taurus, yall look really good with heavy makeup up looks, or full face glam. you guys look good with mullets. And electric colours. Graphic liners. Cool eyeshadow looks. IG baddie make up looks. May also suit dip dye hair styles or highlights.
Virgo, I feel like many of you may have had a hipster phase, plaid shirt and boots situation. Or some kind of lowkey emo phase . Even a tomboy phase. But anyways, you look great with slicked back hairstyles, neat loose natural hair. You Look Royal, in a laid back way. No matter your aesthetic. Virgo, you look best when you take care of yourself, when you look very clean, and tidy. Clean girl aesthetic
Leo, Animal prints look so great. You’re royal in a flashy way. You may feel like you look great in designer clothing or higher end brands. The quality and brand may be of importance to you and you won’t just buy things from anywhere. You’re going to attract looks, because the planets revolve around the sun. You look good being flashy and fully expressing your authentic self and uniqueness, don’t hold back your greatness.
Libra, yall could wear a potato sack and still look great asf. Your facial features are usually very proportionate and balanced. I think your natural glow is what suits you best, and an elegant outfit. You look great showing everyone the embodiment of Venus on Earth, and I think you have “aesthetic” in your genes.
Aquarius, you look good in unisex or androgynous, long or short hair, any colour, you will make it work. Doesn’t matter if things clash, you can make it work. The innovated. Unique style. Dreamy aura, they have an intelligent vibe. You’re giving the audience a taste of the stars. Of intelligence beyond this earth. Cyber /rave styles can look great on them too. Or very artsy looks. Many of them also get into cosplay. They look ethereal so they can embody what isn’t real (anime, cartoons, movie characters etc) People may even say they look like an anime character.

Image 1: A pencil drawing of several minor characters from Once Upon a Time (in Space) by the Mechanisms. Left to right are the Red Hood, Colonel Belle, Old Rosie, Schezerehade and Dunyazad, and General Tuco. The Red Hood is a small Asian person with dark bangs visible under a long cloak. Behind her is the vague shape of some sort of monster, meant to be a representation of her wolf virus. Colonel Belle is a thin, white, stern-looking woman with a knee-length light coloured coat, hair pulled back in a bun. She has a narrow face, lined with age and scowls at the camera. Old Rosie is a Rose Red, in dark armor, with short hair and a walker. Schezerehade is a small, mousy white woman with long, dark hair and dark clothes, wearing a skirt and vest, as well as small boots. Dunyazad is a mirror of Schezerehade, with light hair and clothing in place of the darkness in Schezerehade's design. Both sisters wear rectangular glasses. General Tuco is a tall, afrolatina woman with shoulder-length curly (~3a) dark hair. She wears a dark bodysuit, with several belts crossing her chest. The drawing is cut out, and laid on a black dresser. In cursive, at the top, it reads "Once Upon a Time (in Space)", with the logo of the album crudely drawn. Each character is labelled with their name in small, round handwriting.
Image 2: A pencil drawing of characters from the Toy Soldier's Story by the Mechanisms. Left to right are the Angel, the Real Girl, the Old Woman, and Pierette. The Angel is a thin, blonde white woman with a shoulder-length, feather-like hairstyle, a small, pointy nose, and pale eyes. She has a white cane, and wears light, loose-fitting clothing. The Real Girl is a short, mid-sized light-skinned brown woman with short, curly (~3c) dark hair. She wears a sweater, round glasses, and a long, dark skirt, and holds a guitar. The Old Woman is a short, fat white woman with a beehive-like hairdo, and wears an old-fashioned ball gown. Pierette is a tall, thin, white woman with back-length blonde hair that curls into itself at the end. She wears rectangular glasses, a short skirt, and a tank top. Pierette has a dark knee brace on her left leg. The drawing is cut out, and laid on a black dresser. In cursive, at the top, it reads "The Toy Soldier's Story". Each character is labelled with their name in spall, round handwriting.
Image 3: A pencil drawing of characters from Ulysses Dies at Dawn by the Mechanisms. Left to right are Athena, Arachne, Actea and Lyssa, Penelope, and Calypso. Athena is a white woman with mid-toned curly (~2c) hair. She wears a closely cut suit, and has long, dangling earrings. Arachne is a black woman with her hair in braids. She wears a long-sleeved turtleneck sweater, and a long skirt. Arachne sits in a wheelchair. Actea is a short, mid-sized dark-skinned Latina person with wavy (~2a) hair. She wears a dark tank top, with dark shorts that are rolled up. Several belts cross her chest, and Actea wears rectangular glasses, with a prosthetic left leg. Lyssa is a short, thin, light-skinned Latina person with straight, shoulder-length dark hair. She wears long pants and a jacket with the sleeves rolled up, showing a prosthesis attached to the elbow of her left arm. Penelope is a tall, fat brown woman with an afro-like hairstyle, with ~4b textured hair. She has large round glasses, and wears a dark, flowy romper with a toga-like cloth draped over it. Calypso is a thin white woman with mid-back-length blonde hair, and appears to be wearing leggings and a close-fitting jacket. In her left hand she holds a bottle. The drawing is cut out, and laid on a black dresser. In cursive, at the top, it reads "Ulysses Dies at Dawn", with the logo of the album crudely drawn. Each character is labelled with their name in small, round handwriting. End ID.]

🎨🎇What hairstyle to wear with sunglasses Dress up in spring and summer to control fashion and fashion
The temperature has risen, the sunlight has become more and more dazzling, and the appearance rate of sunglasses has doubled.
Big bias disc hair
The messy sense of the big partial split hair itself is very visually impactful, with such a hairstyle with a retro sense of round-framed sunglasses, the retro flavor is very strong, just like the 60s retro lady who came out of the pictorial!
Fluffy curls
This shoulder-length Korean hairstyle with fluffy curly hair, side long bangs and short hair modify the face shape well, and the fluffy curls at the ends increase the volume of the hair, and with a pair of sunglasses, the girl is more of a big sister and has a royal sister style.👇👇

Alright! I’m just going to go with the non-human characters, since I don’t really have visual designs for the humans. Gill also doesn’t really have a visual beyond his basic physique (tall, thin East Asian man; black eyes, mostly straight black hair, looks tired, mole beneath right eye) because he can appear in a variety of circumstances, including at different ages.
Anyway, here’s the designs:
-Grass-Cutter, in any form, always looks freshly made and generally has a simple design. The spirits that dwell within it are largely invisible, but they can speak by causing stony mouths to appear from Grass-Cutter; they also sometimes appear as tiny spectral humanoids flitting around it. Any wooden parts in Grass-Cutter are always made of smoothed but unpolished chestnut wood.
-Kate is based on the Corporate Memphis art style, specifically with the unusually large arms and legs that some of those images tend to have. Her head is relatively small, but she’s large. She always wears a loose-fitting, but somehow almost never creasing, plain white shirt with long, wide sleeves; black pants of a similar style; and mostly featureless blue shoes. Her hair is long, black, wavy, and rounded. In fact, it’s not made of threads, though it otherwise acts like normal hair. Her skin is a neutral blue; her eyes are hazel. Her nose is notably pointed. In 2-dimensional form, Kate reverts to an animated image, and has no face (other than nose) in that form.
Kate’s my favorite visual design, and also the first one of these OCs that I made.
-The Frog is a frog (possibly a bullfrog?) of a species I haven’t been able to decide on, but it’s big and green. It is always sitting, and moves around through levitation; it bounces in place a lot, though. When looked at from the front, it is perfectly symmetrical. Its face is inscrutable, probably because it’s a frog. The frog’s abilities often cause waves to emanate from it, and tend to reduce gravity in its general area. When the frog causes an action to be repeated, it looks kind of like a lag spike in a video game.
-Quill is in his 20s and wears the odd combination of a suit and a hunting cap (think Sherlock Holmes for the hat). His eyes have glowing white rings around the pupils, and he doesn’t look tired like other instances of Gill. Writer tends to appear in concentric patterns, especially with a single large eye in the center, surrounded by smaller eyes, surrounded by tentacles. When interjecting in a conversation, it might just appear as a small lump of black matter with an eye, usually on Quill’s shoulder or covering his face.
-Sera’s visual design is based on sketches with unspecified characters, since I always found it fascinating how artists could pack so much expression into these featureless, bald humanoids. She has a slim and androgynous build. Her dress is sleeveless and has no frills. She has prominent eyelashes and eyebrows, and is extremely expressive. Her mouth is thin but can be pretty tall. She can also cause her mouth to just cease to exist, which is generally used as a neutral or serious expression (neither of which Sera expresses often). When Sera does open her eyes, they are black and filled with swirling galaxies.
-Theo is visually indistinguishable from a human, but I nevertheless devoted a lot of time to designing his visuals. He is white, with medium-length blond hair that surrounds his head, in a sort of mushroom shape. (Unfortunately, I don’t know what most hairstyles are called.) Theo has green eyes and a small mouth. He wears large earrings and round sunglasses. He wears an open white coat and a black crop top, little puffy white rings around his wrists, and black shorts. He makes a lot of flowery gestures with his hands. Overall, Theo looks pretty and manicured.
-The Beast is an aged adult male peacock. I don’t really have anything to describe that I haven’t already said.
-Mike Garden’s insect spirits are individually indistinguishable from normal insects. They include a wide variety of common species, but locusts, cicadas, butterflies, and ladybugs are the most common. They often group into large, wave-like masses, or swarm onto Garden to act as a sort of armor. In close-quarters combat, Mike Garden likes to form spears and blades from masses of hard or sharp insects.
-Alice is, like Kate, based on Corporate Memphis. Alice has red skin, blond hair in a ponytail, and yellow eyes. She wears a yellow shirt, blue pants, and black shoes. Alice’s pill spirits look like large capsule pills of various colors (like in Dr. Mario but less colorful). They can manifest tiny mouths, through which Alice can speak. Alice almost always has a wide smile.
-Tympan has long, wavy blue hair and blue eyes. He’s very muscular and has a strong face, but it’s hard to notice either due to his size.
-Cass’s triangle spirit has a solid, simplistic texture, like a 3d model. It starts with a hypotenuse of 4 feet. It often forms eyes, and occasionally mouths, on its surfaces, and babbles in a high-pitched voice when idle. The beams it shoots are usually short, round, and bubble-like.
That’s all! I’m very far from an artist, so I’ve probably missed a lot of details, and I’m having trouble explaining a lot of things, but this is generally what I have in my head for visuals so far.
OCs! I have a lot of them.
I have a tendency of listening to songs and making up cool imagery from them, and then that imagery turns into OCs. Sometimes it happens the other way around. There’s an odd variety of music involved here, but the whole thing is generally action-oriented. In terms of genre it’s like, modern fantasy punk action?
Anyway, my OCs are divided into factions because I like symmetry. I have a long playlist that covers the entire story which I might post later.
In terms of worldbuilding, it’s very similar to the modern world, including specific locations but not sharing any people or organizations. The supernatural element is entirely focused on spirits, embodiments of things, in a generally animist fashion. Spirits have various powers, appearances, and levels of intelligence. Many spirits form into colonies and/or bond with people. Spirits can telepathically communicate with their bonders, and many spirits are incapable of other forms of communication, leading them to seek out bonders to further their goals.
Anyway, the factions are:
-Merit Inc., a giant conglomerate founded by Mike Garden, current CEO. It started out with translation services, but now it’s reaching into agriculture. It has nefarious and supernatural things going on behind the scenes.
-The Rebellion, a group fighting against Merit and their schemes.
-The Pantheon, a group of powerful spirits in general alliance. Largely a neutral faction that serves its own various interests. It does occasionally do mercenary work in exchange for esoteric favors, though.
Now for the characters. This is going to be long.
The Rebellion:
-The protagonist, who is the only character I have not come up with a name for. He’s a young human and the newest recruit into the Rebellion. He comes from a rural farm. When it was threatened by Merit’s overreach, he discovered Grass-Cutter in an old shed and formed a bond with it. The Rebellion noticed this and came to recruit him shortly afterwards. Associated songs include: GoGo Penguin - Initiate; Eminem - Lose Yourself
-Grass-Cutter, a sentient weapon and host of spirits living within it. Grass-Cutter was first formed in ancient Japan, and its spirits are the spirits of river pebbles and dead bonders. (Dead people, being inanimate objects, may also form spirits.) Grass-Cutter has had many bonders over the years, and its use has always been associated with revolt, good or bad. Grass-Cutter changes form to reflect its current bonder, but it is always a handheld cutting implement. Its main ability is to cut through plant matter as though it were water. Grass-Cutter first appears as a weedwacker, and later as a sickle, then a scythe. Associated song: Yot Club - Japan.
-Kate, the spirit of an image from a corporate slideshow. Merit Inc. has successfully created many such spirits, which it is using as a secret work and military force. Kate, after seeing the secrets of Merit, escaped and founded the Rebellion, which she leads. She is mostly humanoid, though with disproportionately large arms and legs, as well as blue skin. Like other tsukumogami (spirits born from images), she is able to produce little floating marks upon making any strong impact, which she can then take and attach to flat surfaces; when she does, she can enter that surface, going into her 2-dimensional form until she leaves. Kate is also exceptionally strong, durable, and light (though not agile). Associated songs include: Bjork - Army of Me, David Guetta - Titanium
-Gill, an odd sort of spirit: the embodiment of a living human, in colony form. Gill, who appears as a tall East Asian man, is a hive mind; instances of him exist all around the world. Their experiences, knowledge, and personality are shared whenever one of him sleeps. Gill has no other abilities, but he has lots of experience in basically every subject; nevertheless, he remains physically weak. Before the events of the story, Gill was discovered by Merit CEO Mike Garden, who offered not to reveal Gill’s existence to the public in exchange for Gill splitting off part of the hive mind to work for Merit. Gill joined the Rebellion when one of his split selves discovered Merit’s secrets, similarly to Kate, and escaped, spreading the news to the rest of Gill. Associated songs include: David Bowie - The Man Who Sold the World
-The Frog, also known as The Messiah. Capable of reincarnation, it was, in previous lives, a spirit of revolution, change, and rebirth, leading many great historical revolutions (both good and bad), and wielded Grass-Cutter many times. In its current form, it is not sentient. It is a large frog. However, it remains extremely powerful; it is able to cause actions to repeat or reverse, as well as levitate things. The Frog was first discovered by scientists in a forest in Belize, heralded by a host of spirits; it quickly escaped, and was discovered by the Rebellion. It seems to have taken a liking to Kate, but it is rarely any help. Associated song: Shpongle - Dorcet Perception
The Pantheon:
-Writer and Quill. Writer is an elder spirit of a sun that died before the Earth was born. However, due to being formed from a dead object or something, it requires a bonder for most actions. Quill is that bonder. Quill is an instance of Gill, who was abducted by The Beast and formed a bond with Writer. Quill has a distinct personality, much more jovial than Gill’s general tiredness, and maintains this by being unable to sleep (something which Writer ensures). Writer manifests as amorphous masses of cuttlefish-like eyes and black tentacles without suction cups; it is able to reshape itself and Quill, dissolving into a slate-like material and reforming as desired. Associated songs: Tally Hall - Ruler of Everything
-Sera is a spirit generally identified as simply “fey”, Sera’s origins are an enigma. She has a curious obsession with humans, whom she finds fascinating and charming. She is able to turn invisible and incorporeal, though only both at once; she can do this extremely rapidly. She is humanoid. She is bald and wears a simple dress (which is part of her body). Her entire body is the exact same shade of pink. Her eyes are almost always closed, and her mouth is almost always open. Associated songs: Bjork - Human Behavior
-Theo Solberg (no relation to my name) is a tochigami, or genius loci: the spirit of a location. In Theo’s case, that location is Hollywood. Theo appears as a very fashionable blonde human, and is a celebrity actor. He delights in drama and controversy. He has a capricious romantic relationship with Gill. As a tochigami, he is completely invulnerable within his location. He also has the ability to create small, camera flash-like bursts of force in his vicinity. Associated songs: Duran Duran - Rio, Taio Cruz - Break Your Heart
-The Beast, though often referred to as a demon, is technically the only member of the Pantheon who is not a spirit. It is a peacock. It is a bonder, and has formed a bond with a colony of ink spirits. Its sentience is dubious, but its intelligence is not. It “collects” sentient beings, especially spirits, by trapping them in contracts made inescapable by its spirits, and this collection has formed into a cult. The Beast is a silver color, and has plumes covering its eyes. The spirits are floating, amorphous globs of ink with the general shape of a plume. Associated songs: Eagles - Hotel California, ERA - Ameno
Merit Inc.:
-Mike Garden: The main villain. He is a human, a ruthless, joyful entrepreneur who has worked his way from middle class to billionaire status with nothing but skill and a lot of subtle help from his bonded spirits: a swarm of insects that, with sufficient food, is capable of growing infinitely. Associated songs: Peter Gabriel - Big Time, Poor Man’s Poison - Feed the Machine. Associated song for spirits: Gorillaz - Empire Ants
-Alice: The leader of Merit’s secret team of corporate slideshow tsukumogami, as well as head of PR. Alice is crazed and unreasonably devoted. Despite being a spirit, she has formed a bond with a colony of pill spirits, which are capable of inducing dizziness, disorientation, and vertigo with a touch, but can also function as simple projectiles. Associated songs: Jefferson Airplane - White Rabbit, Lemon Demon - Redesign Your Logo
-Tympan: A spirit of unidentified origin, Tympan looks like a tiny man with the lower body of a blue jay, as well as wings instead of arms. He is capable of causing internal fractures, both mental and physical, with his voice. He manages the captured units of Gill, and also as Mike Garden’s advisor. Associated songs: They Might Be Giants - Birdhouse in Your Soul
-Cassius “Cass” Holden is a grizzled human veteran who leads Merit’s military operations. He has a bond with a spirit of right triangles, which takes the form of a yellow right triangle that can divide itself in half repeatedly into more triangles; all of these triangles are freely controlled by Cass. Cass can fire beams from “empty space” created by assemblages of these triangles, and usually arranges the triangles into crosshairs for sniping, or around his wrists and legs as propulsion and rapid fire. Cassius is doubtful of Mike Garden’s cause, but does it anyway because of the favors he owes Merit. Associated songs: Linkin Park - Battle Symphony, Kula Shaker - Mystical Machine Gun
And, finally, that’s all. I might post more about these, especially the story. I know these notes aren’t very organized, so thanks for reading this far!

Do you have any fan casts or strong takes/feelings on the foxes’ appearances? Fandom tends to use the same Pinterest models, which feels wrong to me.
i do in fact! i've actually been meaning to make a post about how i choose to write all of the foxes' ethnicities anyway
but yes i absolutely agree that the typical pinterest model types u generally see on edits is not how i see any of them. nor is reece king or froy gutierrez or lucky blue smith one of my FCs for anyone
for a lot of them i don't necessarily have a single specific FC so much as i have like,, a general impression of features that i will see on various different people, who all may look wildly different from each other or who may not even look how i see the character as a whole but do have a specific feature i associate with them. mostly it boils down to the Energy i get tbh and that's just a Feeling i cant even explain
fun fact im a tiny bit face blind so that might account for some of why i'm so all-over about this
may as well go chronologically. some of them i definitely have more thoughts on than others
1. Dan
ethnicity: Afro Native (Sioux)
features: medium dark skin. buzzcut, killer fade. she often styles it in waves. she's very butch, wears a lot of basketball and cargo shorts, tank tops and flannels and jerseys, hiking boots. skinny but muscular, with a very rectangular body shape. defined jaw. probably like 5'4 or 5'5
FC/Energy: sometimes i get some dan energy out of janelle monae but more butch. lotta dan energy out of samira wiley. lashana lynch
2. Kevin
ethnicity: a lot of things tbd, but he's pretty multi-ethnic. i like the idea of kayleigh being half- or a quarter-japanese in addition to irish because it gives her more of a reason to go to japan for her undergrad. wymack is from d.c. which is a majority black city for its actual residents, but i also like the idea of him being Pasifika/Hawaiian. HOWEVER - and this is pretty important to my read of kevin's character - he's white passing, and has been mostly treated as a white guy who tans his whole life, like occasionally asked if he's italian maybe. learning that his father was a Distinctly Not White Man was a big shock to him.
kristin kreuk, lindsay price, phoebe cates, and marie digby are all half-asian actresses i base kayleigh on
i suppose i base his story partially on broadway actress carol channing, who revealed publically that she was a quarter black when she was like 80 years old. though maybe wentworth miller, a biracial actor who knows his father is black but also doesn't know him, is more accurate to kevin's story. then keanu reeves is a white passing actor with asian ancestry
also none of these people look anything like how i picture kevin lol. kevin is just like,, a guy. handsome ig. but kind of in a CW character kind of way
actually
kevin looks exactly like young jason momoa
3. Andrew
ethnicity: kayin/karen from myanmar
features: fat and muscular, very wide and heavy. this blog is basically all andrew body type refs. medium-olive skin, has a bit of a greyish tinge that makes him look a bit eerie or unhealthy. deep set, droopy eyes; looks so tired. flat face with a low-bridged nose. crooked teeth, especially his canines. natural hair black-ish but he bleaches it light blond. has the beginnings of martial artist punching callouses in his knuckles
FC/Energy: holy shit the characters i feel have Andrew Energy are all over the place. pedro pascal. babe ruth (yes fr). oddjob (harold sakata) from goldfinger. the jinn (mousa kraish) from american gods. gaear grimsrud (peter stormare) from fargo. takeshi kovacs (joel kinnaman) from altered carbon. and i wanna be clear, it's these characters specifically, and generally NOT the actors outside of that specific role. except pedro ❤️
4. Matt
ethnicity: cuban
appearance: matt has more of an Energy than specific features to me rn. that energy is Warm. he has that Warm bro jock dude energy. kind of a marvel hero build, hunky and muscular. very rectangular face. has this haircut:
5. Aaron
i get to cut myself some slack and not go AS in depth about aaron because he and andrew are identical twins
ethnicity: kayin/karen from myanmar
appearance: similar build to andrew, less confident and casual posture and body language. less apathetically murderous and more emotive expressions. better teeth bc his mom took him to the dentist. yes also bleaches his hair
celebrities: probably a lot like the difference between the characters and the actors. andrew is the characters and aaron is how the actors actually look. idk ive never looked at someone and thought 'hey! looks like aaron!'
6. Seth
ethnicity: have been going with half-vietnamese. considering looking into various south asian possibilities like pakistani
appearance: string bean build. that's all i have to offer
7. Allison
ethnicity: allison's very up in the air for me. she and seth are the two foxes i feel fine with being white, but im committing to having no white foxes sooo. i would say i generally see her as either half-middle eastern or chinese
appearance: plus sized and hourglass shaped. heart shaped face. taller, like 5'8 or 5'9. she has a pretty fraught history with her appearance and her parents payed for/pressured her into getting a nose job to have a 'prettier' nose. she also bleaches her hair blonde. she gets it done at a salon tho the twinyards do it in their bathroom
FC/Energy: elle king and nadia aboulhosn are my main inspos for her, esp body type but nadia esp in Vibes
8. Nicky
ethnicity: multi-ethnic. his mother is southern mexican Indigenous, possibly oaxacan. his father is mixed white/kayin
appearance: definitely takes after his mother while his father is white passing. dark brown skin, warm undertones. slightly stocky build. tall ovular head and thin aquiline nose. he's kind of just,, the opposite of the twins ig, so like their facial features look very different, which is a big part of why people don't make the connection between him and the twins alongside the difference in their skin tones, heights, and builds. nicky's build and features are very vertically-oriented, with a tall head, narrow-set eyes, thin nose with a high bridge, etc. the twins are horizontally-orienged, with broad, flat faces, wide-set eyes, wide noses with a low bridge, etc.
FC/Energy: yalitza aparicio, not a guy but one of the few Mexican Indigenous stars in the film industry and i really like her features for nicky. she's oaxacan
9. Renee
ethnicity: Black. african american
appearance: plus sized, circular/apple body shape. round face. dark skin. microlocs to a bit past her chin, bleached white and dyed at the ends. she and allison go to the salon together. femme but plain style, a lot of blouses and long skirts, practical shoes. knuckle callouses. about 5'6
FC/Energy: dominique fishback. tracie thoms, esp in RENT. gabourey sidibe. nicole byer, but not in Energy. brandy, for some reason, probably bc i think she has very serene Energy and is a little bit otherworldly. like if brandy played arwen or galadriel from lotr it would make perfect sense to me, and that's the Renee Energy™️
10. Neil
ethnicity: mixed. Black/Jewish on both sides. his father is polish ashkenazi and afro-brazilian. his mother is Black British and algerian jewish
appearance: very... sharp. like sharp all over. does that make sense? sharp features, sharp face shape, sharp angles to his body. he's got what i vaguely think of as a 'basketball build' not meaning tall but meaning very rangy and angular and lean. all limbs. seth has a similar build. lighter brown skin. he has waardenburg syndrome which is actually where he gets he gets his eye color, and his eyes are very large and widely spaced as well. freckles freckles freckles. freckles everywhere. 4a hair but at least during canon it's not very healthy and thus the curls aren't well-defined. he grows it out long enough to tie back and starts taking better care of it in post-canon. wonky, slightly crooked teeth, with a gap between the fronts
FC/Energy: now neil i actually have a ton for. mostly models which im a lil ashamed of bc i do try to draw more from athletes. alton mason is a main body type ref. mugsy bogues is good to see what i mean about the basketball build without the height. here're the boys: cykeem white, luka sabbat, désiré mia, Leo Hoyte-Egan, dylan hasselbaink, this beautiful stock photo model i've never been able to track down
i think about him every. goddamn. day.
in terms of like,, real ppl and not models: corbin bleu, especially during Jump In. figure skater elladj balde. rayan "ray ray" lopez from mindless behavior. A$AP Rocky a lil bit, maybe i just like his hairstyle idk
two more models i think are important: carissa pinkston and ralph souffrant

Waver 1 - 13 (FINAL) | Prisma Illya 1 - 10 (FINAL) | Prisma Illya 2wei! 1 - 3
Another (and to be honest, the last) batch of impressions from the Fate/ project.
Waver 1
Well, this’ll be interesting. I’ve been hyping this show up for a while for myself, so let’s see how it goes.
Geez, this intro is like a dang movie! I’d love to see a proper Troyca movie! (<-Says the fan of Troyca.)
Wait, if it’s Kayneth Archibald, then is Archibald relatd to Archisorte? Or am I just making thing up here…? Also note Reines refers to Kayneth as “Kayneth El-Melloi Archibald”, possibly meaning Archibald is the middle name, since El-Melloi is a shared surname (or is that a title…?). That probably means Archibald =/= Archisorte and both are similar-sounding middle names. The fact Reines is Kayneth’s niece also explains things quite a bit.
Why is Waver upside down…? Won’t the blood rush to his head soon? (Sure, it allows me to ogle his hair more, but…logic rules more than my stupid whims, y’know?)
Interesting. You can see that although Waver grew out his hair, there’s two layers to it – the longer one in the front and the shorter one in the back. (I’m just curious because I like the hime cut – which is pretty similar - and long hair on dudes in general, in part because both are fairly rare.)
Okay, that explained my gripe with upside-down Waver. Thanks, Reines. (<-genuine)
Aw, Waver buddy, even at this stage, you’re plenty cute. Don’t ever change! (<- As you can see, I am an easily pleased person in most cases.)
Melvin who now???
Troyca’s comic animation rules! It’s too bad Idolish7 Second Beat is using chibis instead of this…
Professor Kayneth. I forgot he had a formal title. I wonder, does Waver - I mean, El-Melloi II – have that title as well?
I guess I should’ve known Saber had the capability to look scary, but…I never knew Saber could look so scary…
*cut to eyecatch* - *points at eyecatch* Okay, someone tried to save budget here, didn’t they???
Aw, friendship between fiction boys is cute…until it involves the puking up on blood on one end.
Waver is the OG underdog here…don’tcha think?
“…with several demands.” – Uh-oh…this is gonna be bad, isn’t it?
You need a Tuner for Magic Crests? (…Like a tuning fork, but a person?) *brow raised in suspicion*
…is it appropriate for me to say “Oh, good lord!” now? (Okay, I did that rather deliberately, but normally in these notes I’d self-censor it to be “oh, goodness” or something like that.)
Seriously, the black-haired dude in the Ionian Hetairoi is my favourite, even if only because he looks like Waver (and he’s really easy to spot, to boot).
Why is this in first person??? I’ve dropped entire shows based on their usage of 1st person cam! Room Mate and Makura no Danshi basically scarred me for life on that front…and both of those are TV shorts!
Hey, wait a second. This “use a quote on the titlecard” thing is clearly an Ei Aoki sort of thing to do. I mean, it’s in ID: Invaded as well…
Waver 2
*new blonde girl appears* - So this is the rumoured Animusphere girl (Mary), huh?
Bounded field, huh? I’m glad I chose to watch F/Z before this, then. Now I actually understand the (rough) mechanics of how that works.
There’s assassins and then there’s Assassins…*thinks about the Holy Grail War*
As it turns out, astromancy is basically astrology.
The one thing that bugs me about “Modern Magecraft” (there’s a similar concept of New Magic in Mairimashita! Iruma-kun) is…how is the magic “modern”…? Especially in a work like this, where the magic is based in arcane rituals and bloodlines…you really need to establish how the “modern” bit works.
Gray is facing away from the Animusphere girl (Mary), I noticed.
“When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.” – Sherlock Holmes – Basically, the fact I’ve memorised this quote is one of the lingering impacts of my time in the Detective Conan fandom, as it can be used on things like quizzes, not just mysteries.
Can we please use proper English, Waver??? (Says me to a character whose name I still find nonsensical enough to not be proper English.) As I said previously, “whydunit” is modus operandi or motive…the new bit is “howdunit”, which would be the method.
I do believe the geocentric model was overthrown by people like Kepler.
Gray kind of looks like Saber with that hairstyle, come to think of it.
With the way Gray hides herself under that hood, it’s no mystery as to why guys love her…at least, I know ThatRandomEditor does. Of course, I’m heavily neutral on the whole affair because I don’t swing that way, but…you know…
LEMPC seems to stand for “Lord El-Melloi Production Committee”, if I’m guessing right.
I seem to remember there was a quote somewhere that said the only constant in this world was change…hmm.
Waver 3
They seem to keep calling Japan “the Far East” (or at least, Japan is part of the Far East). That’s a pretty antiquated term for a supposedly “modern” magic anime. I get vaguely peeved by the term “the Far East” because it causes people to take an oriental viewpoint on things and thus it’s kind of like people from the Anglosphere looking down on Asians. (I also get vaguely peeved by the term “Westerners” for much the same reason and “Caucasians” because it implies all people of the Anglosphere come from the Caucasus, which is false…then again, these niggles are specific to international studies, so I have a vested interest in explaining them.)
…Wow, that star-eyepatch girl is…really something, to be thirsty specifically for Waver’s Iron Claw. (Then again, with my weird tastes in things, who am I to critique her?)
Flitz von Erich. I was surprised to learn this guy actually exists…on Wikipedia, at the very least.
“Any lady should know about wrestling.” – I disagree, Luvia.
Blue furry electrical creature…I dunno how the zoology in this show works, but the fantasy series I’m reading as of the time I was typing this comment has a blue creature called a Raiju (literally “thunder beast” in Japanese, so it would suit the “Thunder” in the episode title). If it’s anything like that, I’d laugh myself silly.
This girl on the poster seems to be called Flan Noir (or something similar).
“…yellow, round, fluffy-smelling…” – What? Svin, you have no right to call a girl those words!
When is this series set if people don’t have phones as a standard? *Googles* Okay, if F/SN is set in 2004, then F/Z is 1994. That would make sense, actually. The internet as we know it was first used in 1995 and didn’t become widespread for home use until a few years later, as I remember having computers in 2004 (albeit the blocky ones with the dial-up).
I was looking at images for the source material and I think I know why I like Waver (aside from the fact he has long hair). Normally I like the boys whose appearances are hard to get right, such as En…Waver in the novels and manga for this series sometimes looks grumpy, sometimes he looks constipated and worst of all, sometimes he looks like Snape with a hook nose.
Okay, so I googled Caules to figure out who his sister was…and I got Apocrypha spoilers. See, his sister is Fiore, who is apparently in that series.
The videos got encoded funny again…
There seems to be a mystery around why Svin and Gray can’t be together…well, one deeper than just “Svin is gaga for Gray [for reasons we don’t know at this point in time]”.
Ha, the El-Melloi Class is basically just the Misfit Class from Mairimashita! Iruma-kun.
“Only the flesh was bitten off.”
This Jupiter gibberish, I assume, is drawing upon the mythology of Jupiter – that is, Zeus – as the god of thunder and king of the gods (thus presiding over living beings).
The English is good on the bill, bar a space between “Mystics of magecraft”.
Norwich is apparently a “faculty” which the Modern Magecraft Theories guys – i.e. Waver – rule over.
Can you imagine Waver swearing? Since I had the volume off, I basically made him say “…if Sir Gueldoa had resorted to brute force, we would’ve been f***ed” in my head…and that was hilarious.
Aw, thanks 7Mononoke. “A cowardly thief sneaks away in the night. If you stride away, bursting with song, you are a conquering king.” That’s a quote from Rider himself.
So the Association has set positions for Masters in the War? Geesh…that must be hard on Waver to find out they’re closed, considering how much Waver pines for Rider.
Waver 4
I finally got the chance to listen to the ED last ep and now it’s the OP I can hear properly. This OP isn’t particularly impressive, considering it’s an instrumental (instrumentals always seem to have less impact for me unless I’m looking for something to chill to), but it does capture the London-esque spirit of the setting very well.
What’s up with this metal (?) maid off to the side, anyway?
“Good thinking to leave the door open…” – For some reason, even though it’s a completely different and much more benign context, this made me think of KyoAni and my heart sunk.
Atrum Galliasta…I hate that man. He may look hot, but he was nothing but a b*stard to Medea.
Bolo ties…nrgh…Basically, ever since Arima wore a bolo tie, I’ve become fairly bugged by them. That’s why Bram’s bugs me.
Aw, Waver, buddy, plase don’t sacrifice yourself again. I read on the wiki you become a Servant’s vessel (specifically for Zhu Ge Liang), so keep your hopes up.
I’m seriously feeling ID: Invaded vibes from this episode, what with the lightning.
I suspect a locked room murder is going to happen soon, knowing the genre. Either that or some other crime.
Considering Fate/ was an eroge-based thing initially, these sex jokes…there’s probably plenty of them out there.
Well, it seems this series only makes sense in that non-Detective Conan way, i.e. you want to know how it all comes together and can’t necessarily figure it out for yourself until you know how the magic works. I’m randomly going to guess this is more Jupiter-based stuff and call it a day on that front.
Seriously, I never got what was up with nightgowns (or just pyjamas in general) having hats. You don’t need protection for your head at night…that’s what pillows are for, yeah? (The only reason I see a hat-like thing working with nightwear is a onesie and that’s meant to be part of the inherent appeal of the thing.)
Waver 5
I feel like Adashino is meant to be an Irene Adler-type figure…
“Peaceful Fairys” (sic)
Where did Kairi’s scar come from…?
The Black Dog was in Mahoutsukai no Yome as well, but this one looks a lot less inviting, huh?
It seems, like the name Rail Zeppelin implies (as “Demon Eyes Collection Train”), most of the people involved in this case have Magic Eyes (or whatever they’re actually called). I wouldn’t be surprised if Kairi had them as well, considering he’s wearing dark glasses in the middle of a thunderstorm.
“King Arthur is a dude, right?” - *laughs madly* They finally managed to parody their own bulls***! (Well, I’m not counting Carnival Phantasm or whatever else because this is the first time they threw a meta joke in there in the whole of this project, as far as I can remember.)
Trimmau seems to be the maid’s name…huh. They never mentioned that earlier, I don’t think.
So what’s the difference between Fairy Eyes and Mystic Eyes?
Wait, does that even work…? The entire house is the murder weapon? That’s basically breaking the “secret passageway” thing on a larger scale.
So what’s Trevor’s motive…?
The dogs running towards the Workshop reminded me of the Hunger Games for some reason…must be the climax.
That fairy isn’t emoting much…
Oh cra-Wills is going to sacrifice himself, like Adashino was going to do! That’s the second time I’ve seen that in 2 days (the first was in the Hypnosis Mic manga about the Dirty Dawg).
Uh…Waver’s not particularly fit or fast, is he…?
Can you be paid for your case if your client is essentially dead…?
Adra? I read around and Adra seems to be a way to spell the location (or whatever it is) in the first case…which got adapted into a stage play, but not an anime. That’s probably what he’s (Waver) referring to.
Notably, the title is translated to “lance” but yari means spear…
Waver 6
I seriously wanna slap that pink-haired girl…Update: Her name is Yvette.
This is basically Gray fanservice…
If Gray = Saber and Saber =King Arthur…hmm…does it count as a girl’s party?
Homeland? Since Britain is Saber’s (aka Gray’s) home country, I think they meant “hometown”…I’d hav to listen to the Japanese to make sure, though.
I still think Waver is a stupid, or at the very least false, name for a boy, especially if he did come from Britain. That’s basically my one limitation on him as a husbando.
The red bit of the eyecatch was shapd like an eye…it did catch eyes in a sense, after all.
So Trimmau is sustained by magic.
Locked-room…or rather, bounded field…mystery time!
Luvia did mention wrestling in another episode…
I had to google that, but the Separation Castle is from the Adra case mentioned in episode 5. No wonder I don’t remember it…
“Are you suggesting there were faults…” (from Luvia) - Ooh, I was thinking the perpetrator was caught inside their own bounded field or maybe it was an outsider, but that works too, Reines.
Add calld Luvia out for her extravagance, LOL.
Catch-as-catch-can appears to be “no-holds-barred fighting”, particularly wrestling.
That case was both informative and possibly solveable by the audience. Both good qualities for a mystery.
If you summon the spirit again, is it the same Rider with the same memories? Or can you summon a different version of the same Rider with amnesia, much like Rin did with Archer? Update: Oh yeah, I did read this on the wiki at one point but then forgot about it. The next episode (7) confirms that Rider wouldn’t remember Waver if he were summoned again.
Waver 7
…C’mon, admit it, show. The glasses are not only there for plot reasons but to up Waver’s status as megane boy for the rest of this case. Not that I mind – I actually really like megane boys, but I’m nowhere near the love of Meganebu – but in the case of plausibility, I wanna poke holes into it.
Auction for which Mystic Eyes now…?
There’s a guy…with an elephant head…I know I shouldn’t be bugged by it, but I need the MST3K mantra right now.
This is gonna be a Murder on the Orient Express thing, isn’t it? All cases set on trains seem to take cues or make homage to it. (I may not be that proficient on Christie in comparison to Holmes, since Holmes was Conan’s inspiration, but Murder on the Orient Express I have read and I did secure an anthology of 4 Christie novels at one point specifically so that I could improve in this area.)
The main series never explained the bad blood between the Church and the Tower, did they…?
*sweatdrop* Let me guess…when Yvette mentions “multiplay”, she means a threesome, right?
How do anime people see out of those blindfold thing, anyway??? (Or is it that Leandra has Mystic Eyes that were sold off or otherwise tampered with?)
I believe the word is “palate”, Kairi (or subbers).
Anime characters being bagworms with their blankets is always appealing, no matter the gender. It’s funny and/or relatable, after all.
Does Gray get motion sickness…? Update: Seems I spoke about a minute too soon. She does.
Waver 8
How does Waver know that Adashino got the documents about the train? Is it because she was in all those places at all those times and he connected the dots?
This lady has heterochromia. Specifically, one is brown and the other is blue or green.
Hmm? I thought the character design was familiar for this. As it turns out, Jun Nakai (who did the character design for this) also did Gate’s, which explains it.
Dionysus is the Greek god of wine, IIRC. Hephaestion is, as (s)he explained, the confidante of Alexander the Great (had to google this one).
It’s hard to see before the brightly-lit scene where Olga reappears, but as shown, Waver seems to have cut off part of his forelocks on the left side.
What’s an Odo???...ooh, fanservice…*ogles*
The summoning of Hephaestion and Trisha’s murder may or may not be related…we just don’t know how, yet.
I think a Detective Conan Murder on the Orient Express-style mystery would be a good video ga-*googles* There’s at least one of them out there already (albeit only in Japan)...namely, this one. Spoke too soon.
Oh yeah…this is Olga’s new room, isn’t it? I almost forgot about that.
Update: I think this look at the Adra Separation Castle case is interesting. It’s similar to posts I would write, but done by a professional – namely Richard Eisenbeis of Kotaku and Anime News Network.
Waver 9
So if there’s a Servant…you have to find the Master.
Olga reminds me of Reines…kind of.
LOL, whoever thought of a zombie cooking show…?
This series really goes all-in on the zombies and the fake-outs thereof, huh? Dangit, Melvin, don’t scare us.
Melvin has a really odd relationship with Waver, huh? If you’re really insisting you’re “the only person to ever be able to hurt Waver”, I don’t quite see how you guys can be friends in the normal sense of the word.
Why would someone have a violin at a time like this…?
Interestingly, they don’t bother to do any fanservice of Caules. That scene with Gray and Yvette was fanservice for those who like them, but the only guy who’s getting to do any fanservice in this series is Waver himself…(what with him being naked and knocked out right now.)
“Sibyl” seems to be a synonym for “virgin”…(*whispers “Awkward…”*)
Update: After reading some of Marth’s posts on this series, I’m inclined to call this “Murders on a Train (with an Exploding Helicopter for Good Measure)”.
Waver 10
For some reason, there’s episode 0 – 9, then 11 – 13 on the service I’m using. Where’s 10?
I think Waver’s relationship with Rider is interesting because of the way I think of relationships myself. Waver has made it clear that he wants to see Rider again so he can basically prostrate at his feet all over again (and maybe win a wish and/or see Oceanus while they’re at it), but – hey, hear this! - I used to believe, when I was still an impressionable kid, all relationships, whether they be between friends, family or even lovers, lasted roughly in the same state basically forever (as in, friends stay friends forever, they’ll never be so far apart that they can’t kep their relationship alive etc. etc.)…Obviously, I was wrong and arguably, this change in thinking, plus the related changes in technology, are where my ability to fleetingly but passionate love both 2D boys and the series they come from comes from.
Wait, so the Child of Einasshe (sp?) is the forest, yeah? I don’t think I got that 100% straight.
I never thought the shield form of a Mystic Code could be used for snowboarding down a mountain/hill…whatever Gray just went down. I didn’t even know Add had a shield form, for that matter.
“[U]sual individual” – LOL. What a way to refer to Waver.
“Wait a minute!” – I’m just imagining Phoenix Wright all of a sudden. A Waver legal mystery series would be boring as all get out – I’m far less interested in the courtroom versions of mysteries and more interested in how the pieces fit together. (Update: Then again, I am a person who likes the action genre and courtroom mysteries don’t have much of that, which might also explain my choice.)
“…lacking the element of motive to begin with.” – Well, Waver’s not wrong…
I’m observing this apple and noticing someone skimped on the detail around the stem. Does anyone still remember Art Academy for the DS? After looking at some promo material for it, I basically learnt how to draw a proper apple (and nothing else, really). If an apple is just drawn as a circle, it doesn’t quite look like an apple up close. (Two of the main things I screw up on when drawing are perception and the colour of highlights, both of which are covered in something like an apple stem and the related indent.)
Oh goodness…I was hoping Karabo would keep his vision (or actual eyeballs)…but that’s gruesome.
I’m guessing, based on the wheelchair, that Waver’s still paralysed or otherwise not able to move around like normal. Update: Spoke too soon.
Someone encoded the video funny again…
Waver 11
What was that crossword thing…? A warding spell of some sort?
Is that an owl in the back?!
Stealth fighter…Rider wanted on, didn’t he?
Every time he appears on screen now, I basically curse Melvin. He’s entertaining to watch, sure, but he’s annoyingly prodigal (= wasteful). He’s basically Dice from HypMic at this stage (aka he’s the sort of person who’d bet away his own clothes, given the chance and incentive).
Look at the way Waver’s hair drags behind him as he walks…it’s gorgeous…
“Residual Image” (as translated in the title) is literally “the left-over image” (zanzou). Not surprising, but I find the exact combo of characters used interesting since it could be short for “nokoru eizou” (where the nokoru’s character is read as zan in the combo, as you can guess).
Waver 12
Wow…this series really pulled something out of its butt this time, huh? “The guy without a heart”…no viewer would’ve known that actually referred to a character called Dr Heartless unless they knew of his existence somehow (the closest they would’ve been was having an inkling that this pointed to a name of the culprit).
There is an owl in the back of the auction room!
Ay? So what the heck is Pandemonium in this case?
“dotard” – Turns out this means “an old person, especially one who has become physically weak or whose mental faculties have declined.” You can’t say I don’t enrich my vocbulary through watching anime, huh?
I’m still wondering…why adapt case 7 of this series (Rail Zeppelin)? Why not case 1 (Adra)? Update: I don’t know where I pulled the number 7 from, since this is volume 4 – 5 of the series. Apparently some of the cases were anime-original though.
Waver 13 (FINAL)
Oh, Flat, you stupid…
Waver’s exasperated faces are great. No wonder Reines likes to toy with him…
I can assume Rail Zeppelin is a Ghost Liner, yes?
Can I guess that Adashino ~likes~ Waver…? Update: Turns out that’s not quite the case.
Ooh, Waver without his shirt is se-okay, I’m getting distracted. Seriously though, Waver never showed his Crest in F/Z. I never even knew what it looked like until now! The fact it’s such a simple design in comparison to his Command Seals is…kinda underwhelming, really.
I think there’s a bit of a pattern between Jakurai (from HypMic) and Waver…namely, they suck when it comes to drinking. (Also, of course, the long hair. Don’t forget it, never forget it.)
Shut up, Add!
For some reason, I felt like a lot of that last part, while getting closure for Waver, it almost had connotations of “I’ll meet you on the other side, Rider”…so it felt kind of sad, to be honest. That talk between Reines and Olga I don’t think I’d understand without Apocrypha and Grand Order, but I guess that’s to be expected in such a huge franchise. Anyways, moving right along!
Illya 1
I’ve been a bit worried about what I’ll have to subject myself to for the sake of Magical Girls…
Was that…Taiga?
Who’s Liz…?
Okusama, huh? (Okusama = someone’s wife, although it seems to be used in the plural here since I don’t think Kiritsugu and/or Iri are dead in this timeline.)
The subs I’ve got say Shiro is adopted here too (when it’s not in the Japanese), although I wonder exactly how much of UBW is going to be true in this anime…
Hmm…a bit of digging reveals Luvia’s not a Master. So throwing out Lancer is really just a joke on how Lancer gets roasted early on in Grail Wars, right?
Uhhhhhhhhhhhhh…squick, much…(Thank goodness the source I was using edited out the loli fanservice, so I can tolerate this series a lot more…but still, suggesting you have a romance with your step-brother, even if it’s known you’re not related from the beginning, is…you already know my feelings on that, based on my reaction. Shiro is, what, 15? About twice Illya’s age!) Update: Okay, so he has no confirmed age in Prisma Illya, but he’s 17 in F/SN so I’d assum the same or similar, seeing as he attends the same school. It’s fine if it’s platonic, but this is clearly an Onii-chan, daisuki! thing the likes of which Oreimo throws down! Thank you for calling it out though, Ruby.
Oh my gosh, this looks like the Rhongomynaid (Detective Waver) and Excalibur (or whatever Saber’s Noble Phantasm is called) summoning beam! LOL!
Ruby, you lech! Don’t go praising the angles! *shakes fist* (Seriously, what if magical girl mascots were paedophiles…? *blank face* Welp, considering what’s out there on the internet, I wouldn’t be surprised if a hentai or something had such a concept.)
Hmm? Turns out the word for Servant means something like “celestial hero”. Makes sense.
Nice callback to Saber and Shiro!
Illya 2
I thought Illya would say that her parents are dead…turns out the show’s not that grimdark (to the point where it wouldn’t set the show after Kiritsugu and Iri’s deaths), huh?
Do the sticks have a gender? The subs said “she” for Ruby…
LOL, it’s Rider. I thought Lancer was gonna get his butt kicked all over again (thinking more along the lines of CCS).
It’s Gay Bul-I mean, Gae Bolg! (I’ve been reading TV Tropes again…can you tell?)
This episode was pretty pedestrian. I like it more than the first one.
What’s up with the CGI…?
Oh! Bunbun, who does Yuki Yuna! Update: They only did the illustrations for some of the series. They also did SAO illustrations, although that’s of less significance to me.
Illya 3
The sticks do have genders!!! That’s like claiming Jesus for kakera with Mudae! (Yes, that’s possible. I got him in one server.)
The power of fujoshi…is amazing! How did it get to a girl who’s so young?!
These angles are a bit disturbing…
“Casao”, LOL.
Magical girl nakama, huh?
Illya 4
MST3K mantra!
Whose quote is that again…? “Don’t think, imagine”? Update: It turns out to not be anyone’s quote at all, if Google results are to be believed.
Uh-oh! Saber Alter!
Illya 5
Padding the episode already…?
The mist is a quality of a Berserker, right?
Geez the angles piss me off…
These sticks have brains???
Can you call it teamwork if they’re always complaining about each other?
Illya 6
More padding…
Illya’s UBW!
Geesh, that last-minute shot of Rin and Luvia popping out of the ground scared me for a bit…
Illya 7
*sigh* It’s the sick episode…
I recognise the vacuum cleaner. I have the same one at home.
*sigh* Random fanservice of elementary school girls. This is what gives anime a bad name.
*Sapphire pulls out a USB port* - Ohhkay, is that stick fanservice, in a sense…? Because that’s awkward too.
Maids went out of fashion years ago…
“Lyrical Radical Genocide” - I think this Lyrical Radical things is parodying Nanoha.
Based on the cloak, it’s an Assassin.
“Listen, if you aren’t careful, you’ll die!” – Yep, because people die when they are killed. I almost missed that meme for a bit.
Illya 8
Illya’s still reeling from Miyu’s talk, huh?
I noticed it said tomoda(chi) in the background at one point.
Does Miyu exist in any of the alternate universes?
Ah, there’s yuujou (friendship) in the background as calligraphy.
I think the video got encoded funny again…
Geez, complaining about boobs? The series got worse…oh, I forgot Shiro was around in this series.
…who’s left? There’s been Saber, Archer, Lancer, Assassin, Rider, Caster and…who? Berserker, that’s who.
Illya 9
Ohhhhhhhh brother, not more bath scenes…
Iri looks almost exactly like she does in the Eiznbern Consultation Rooms! (I found those around and watched them today.)
Thank goodness the fanservice is censored…
I never realised Berseker had heterochromia until now…
One thing that I assume makes Saber’s outfit look nice to thos that like girls is the window in the top…but it goes to waste on Miyu, LOL.
I find it interesting Illya has all these concerns – the ones (or similar ones) Iri harbourd in F/Z.
Hey, the bridge! This is the bridge where Rider dies inn F/Z, yeah?
The ED looks different this time…
Illya 10 (FINAL)
E-Eep…loli fanservice…
Now Miyu is basically what Waver is to Rider, no doubt about it.
Bulls***! Speak of the devil! I was wondering what Waver looked like in the Illya style, because I read on the wiki he makes a cameo in season 2, and…here he is. Didn’t expect him in season 1, though.
Another new ED animation. I find it interesting they’ve never once had to recast any VAs throughout the entire existence of Fate/ anime…not that I know of, anyway.
Hiroyama Hiroshi is the original Illya creator.
Okay, that’s the end of one season. I feel kind of fatigued since I finished the Eiznbern Consultation Rooms today as well, so I’m going to take a break from watching more Illya until it’s necessary to watch again in a few posts’ time.
Now that they’ve collected the cards, I’m wondering what the series intends to do next…
Illya s2 Pt 1 Ep 1
They clearly skimped on the budget when Shiro was leaving the house…
I keep forgetting Illya is meant to be German…
That bad English…is actually there in the ep. title…
Oh great…schoolgirls talking about erotic swimsuits…
This s*** is what you call “Class-S”! I have no interest in it, because I don’t swing that way! (Sorry, yuri fans…)
The problem with series that aren’t 100% made with you in mind is that your favourite characters might look ugly…that’s especially the case with En, Jakurai and Waver.
Ryudou Temple, eh? Let’s hope Assassin still looks good.
I don’t think I’ve seen that before…namely, being able to hear what’s going on outside the transformation while it’s happening.
Now this 2 Illyas thing…this is new, alright.
Illya s2 Pt 1 Ep 2
LOL, what a horoscope.
Truck-kun! I don’t think Illya would make a good isekai protag, come to think of it.
Who is this nurse? I feel like she’s from some other part of the Nasuverse… Update: My guess was right. That’s Caren Hortensia, protagonist of Fate/hollow ataraxia and Kirei’s…uh, daughter. I know he had a wife. We never met said wife, but seeing the daughter really drove that fact home.
Uhhhhhhhh…okay, now the lesbian loli scene just made things go off a cliff for me. I’m not against lesbians or yuri – to each their own – but that scene was clearly meant to be pleasing to a certain audience.
How does anyone kill anything gently…?
Ohhhhhhkay, strike 2 for loli fanservice.
I seem to remember…that’s right, Alice from the [something] no Kuni no Alice series was evaluated on her coffee-making skills (by Julius, I think it was). That’s why I’m thinking of Alice when I see Luvia praising Miyu on something similar.
Wa-hey! It’s Rin’s Azoth dagger!
Well, the mechanics of the transformation are also something you have to think about. I’ll give the show kudos for that.
Illya s2 Pt 1 Ep 3
Can we not with the whole “Onii-chan, daisuki!” thing?! That’s it! That’s the last straw! I’m finishing this episode and aborting early so that I can preserve my dignity…and get some proper sleep for once.
The fact Miyu thinks Shiro resembles her brother must not be a coincidence…(I’ve become far too Fate/ savvy, haven’t I?) Update: It seems I was right. Apparently, Miyu was taken in by Kiritsugu in a certain universe, but apparently this is a bunch of spoilers.
Genki na aisatsu was in the back.
This is just getting worse and worse…
So now Kuro’s name is Kuroe (Chloe), huh? Anyways, good riddance, loli fanservice! So long! I won’t miss you one bit!

Fictober 19, Day 2: “Just follow me, I know the area.”
OCs: Tess, protagonist and one half of the eventual romantic pair; Courtney, her best friend; briefly introducing Eugene (Gene), an old high school acquaintance, and a mystery man. Also mentions Nolan, previously established as Tess’ ex.
Project: “hell if I know what to name it yet” new novel idea, original fiction
Potential Triggers: alcohol, set in a bar
Word Count: 1,366
About: Tess checks out the new look of a bar she hasn’t visited in years; her plans for a night hanging out with her friend, alone, are potentially dashed by the appearance of someone they know.
Courtney was waiting patiently outside Tess' building, as promised, when she descended the stairs seven minutes late. She'd dawdled in tidying up the kitchen and rushed through choosing her outfit, then changed her mind entirely when she realized they'd be walking though whatever coating of damp, fallen leaves the sidewalks had acquired since the last time they'd been cleaned. That meant boots, sturdy ones, and not the strappy heeled sandals she'd meant to wear in spite of the cold.
Who was she dressing up for, anyway? She ended up in an oversized cabled sweater, a long flowing skirt, and the boots. Her look said "bookworm in fall," "not usually a bar person," or possibly, "doesn't plan on getting laid tonight."
All three were true.
Courtney, on the other hand, somehow managed to look polished and smart in her skinny jeans and faux snakeskin flats and vintage leather jacket, with her hair in a radical new pixie cut. Which Tess complimented immediately.
Courtney fluffed the front with a smirk. "I know, it's amazing, right? I was getting so tired of the old look." She eyed Tess' hair, long and wavy and completely unstyled. "Ever considered a change yourself? Not necessarily this short, but we could hit the salon this weekend, get your hair done, both get manicures, make a day of it."
She meant well, but Tess shook her head. "I like my hair fine, thanks. The manicures, though, maybe, we'll see."
Tess didn't want an overhaul of her look. She felt like making an effort to change herself, after all she'd been through, was an admission that something about her was the problem in the first place. Nolan hadn't acted that way because Tess needed a new hairstyle or different clothes.
He'd turned out to be a cold-hearted bastard, and nothing Tess did to herself would change that.
They fell into step easily, setting out for the Pig and Whistle. But Tess' apartment was in a completely different part of town as her parents' house, and before long, they were surrounded by buildings she didn't recognize. "Are you sure this is the right way?"
"Just follow me, I know the area."
Tess bit her tongue on the obvious reply, so did she, she'd grown up here, but to be honest, nothing looked familiar from this perspective. Off in the distance stood the water tower, but that was an imperfect landmark, so tall and obvious that you could see it from anywhere in town, which was precisely the problem--it looked the same, looming over them with the spotlights turning it light blue even in the darkness, no matter where Tess stood, here or five streets over.
Eventually they turned a corner and the library appeared beside them, shut down for the night but still known and comforting. Tess oriented herself by it and suddenly knew precisely where they were and how to reach the Pig and Whistle. The knowledge relaxed her stiff shoulders and put the slightest bit more spring in her step, which Courtney noticed.
"Now you seem excited to get there. Finally warming up to the idea?"
Tess laughed. "More like I want to be warm again. This wind is pretty cold!"
Inside the bar was certainly warm enough when they reached it, but also shocking. Tess noted the maximum occupancy sign near the door as they went in--ninety-seven, a specific number so close to one hundred she wondered why it wasn't rounded up. How did they determine these things, anyway? Who made the decision? Courtney opened the door for her and swept her inside, and Tess immediately thought the bar must be full, they wouldn't be allowed in, they couldn't be, there wasn't room to sit or stand or even breathe. Everywhere she looked where people, their warm bodies filling the space with laughter and heat and motion, overlaid with the scent of sweat and beer and woodsmoke.
Courtney took her arm and propelled her toward the bar. "Get me a porter, whatever they've got on draft. I'll find us a table." She slipped her credit card out of the tiny purse on her arm. "For the tab," she said, handing it over before disappearing, being swallowed by the crowd.
One of the bartenders got to her quickly, given the crush of people leaning against the bar. He was tall and lean and brown-skinned, his dark hair cropped almost as short as stubble, and he dressed more like he meant to go pick apples than tend to customers. But his smile was wide and friendly. "What can I get for you?"
She relayed Courtney's order and realized she had to choose something for herself. "Make it two," she added hastily, hoping she'd like it. Once the bartender had traded the two drinks for Courtney's card, Tess grabbed them and let herself get absorbed into the sea of people, drifting however they moved until she reached the edge, a wall where she could scan the room and assess her position. And hopefully find her friend.
Courtney caught her eye and waved from the far corner, where an old pot-bellied wood stove burned merrily. Tess gripped the glasses more firmly, as they were already beading with condensation. The warmth of the room that had seemed welcoming and cozy when they entered was quickly becoming oppressive. And Courtney's sitting right by a fire. Tess sighed and charged into the fray again.
On the way she smelled so many perfumes and colognes overlaying the faintly metallic scent of sweat underneath. Everyone was dressed for the weather outside--sweaters, leather jackets, even a few wool pea coats she wouldn't have expected to see until true winter set in. Few people had shed them, simply because where could they put them? The row of coat hooks nailed to the wall near the door was pitifully short, and chairs seemed to be few and far between--hard to hang a coat on a stool, which has no back. Half the "tables" were beer barrels fixed with glass tops. The rest were more deserving of the name, but they were filled with empty glasses and scattered bits of board games.
Board games? That's something the old bar would never have bothered with. She and Courtney weren't likely to utilize that amenity--she couldn't imagine indulging in a tipsy game of Battleship--but it fit with the warm-toned wood and rustic decorations and the roaring fire. If not for the crowd, they might have been in someone's family cabin on a visit, in which case an evening of board games sounded just about perfect.
When the sea of people parted again to spit Tess out, much closer to her target than before, she saw that someone else had already found Courtney and was leaning over her, intent on conversation. From the angle, Tess couldn't recognize the man, who seemed to be a comfortably average height with a lean build, even under his own bulky cabled sweater. The rich brown of it nearly matched his curly hair. Without being able to see his face, he looked no more familiar than any other stranger around her. She could only hope her appearance would shoo the unexpected company away, because this evening out wasn't about getting Courtney laid--Tess wasn't going to let herself be ignored in favor of a good-looking guy. If she wanted his number, fine, that was fine, but no more than that.
Before she reached them, another man appeared, carrying two beers of his own in a mirror of Tess' situation. He was shorter, slighter, Asian-featured, and definitely someone Tess knew. Eugene Lane. Goddammit. We weren't supposed to see anyone from high school tonight. Courtney said they don't hang out here.
But there was nothing for it, unless she wanted to disappear into some dark corner with two beers she wasn't even sure she'd like, to drink alone, an obvious target for some dudebro with a Grizzly Adams beard to hit on. She could imagine the negging already. She sighed and shouldered her way past one of them, toward Courtney and the two men, one of whom she still couldn't place. If one was Gene, who did that make the other?

Hello and Happy Holidays! Would love to see an Alternate POV from Monty or Miller for "though it's always pricking me."
Original fic here!
When Monty heard that Dropship was going to be in town over the summer, he was not expecting that he, personally, would have much interaction with them. Everyone knows why they’re coming back, knows how Aurora Blake is doing (not well) and how much Bellamy cares about his family (a lot). The whole town is abuzz with the news in the way only small towns can be, and people who know that Bellamy was in school with Monty are definitely eager to hear all about him, but Monty knows he’s not going to be at the top of Bellamy’s list of people to see, nor should he be. If not for the band, Monty probably would have largely forgotten Bellamy existed. Bellamy might not have ever known Monty existed. Monty wouldn’t blame him if he didn’t.
Still, the whole thing is kind of exciting, in a silly way. Everyone at school who knows where he lives now also knows that he’s going to be in the same geographic location as Dropship, and odds aren’t bad that he’ll run into at least one of them. If it’s Bellamy, he’ll maybe have a conversation, and then he can ride that wave of coolness for at least a week and possibly longer.
It would be a pretty great way to start off senior year, and he sees no reason to set his expectations higher than that. Even that’s pretty optimistic.
Jasper, of course, is more optimistic.
“He’s going to be bored! You know he wants to hang out with us. We’re very lovable.”
“Speak for yourself,” Monroe says, and Monty frowns.
“Sorry, are you saying you’re not lovable? Are you negging yourself?”
She pauses, frowns at her beer. “Yeah, that didn’t really work. I’m just saying, the odds of Bellamy Blake even getting a Facebook invite, let alone responding to one, seem really low. Does he even have his own Facebook? Isn’t it just one of those celebrity profiles?”
“It probably couldn’t hurt,” Wells says, the voice of reason as always. “But if you send it and he doesn’t respond and doesn’t show up, you’ll never know if he saw it and decided not to come or never saw it or saw it and hates you and–”
Jasper holds up his hand. “Okay, okay. I get it. I will not invite Bellamy Blake to our weekly drinks, and none of us will ever be discovered as secret rock geniuses–”
“You definitely wouldn’t be,” Monty puts in.
“Just let the record show that I tried to make us rich and famous, and you guys were like, fuck that.”
“That’s exactly what happened,” says Harper, dry.
“It’s on the record,” Clarke adds. She’s been quiet, but she definitely had a crush on Bellamy back in high school, so she’s probably stressing more than the rest of them. If Monty’s high-school crush had disappeared off the face of the earth and then reemerged as the lead singer of a hit band, he’d also probably feel kind of weird about it. “This is the only bar in town, if they want to drink, this is it.”
Jasper raises his own glass. “Here’s hoping.”
Clarke smiles a small, private smile. “Yeah, here’s hoping.”
*
“Wouldn’t it make more sense if I didn’t come to this?” Nate asks. He’s not actually that opposed to going to the bar–Arcadia is not an exciting place, and anything that breaks up the monotony is good by him–but if he doesn’t put in at least a token protest, they’ll just assume he always wants to be sociable, and he’s got a reputation to maintain. If people start thinking he just enjoys doing things, he’s going to be on the hook to do things all the time.
“Why, because you suddenly don’t like drinking?” Bellamy asks. He’s been doing minute adjustments to his hairstyle for what feels like an hour, and Nate can admit he is curious about that one. Bellamy with an actual crush is new and different.
Or old and different, really. Apparently Bellamy’s been nursing this one for a long time.
“I can drink here, I don’t have to go to your shitty hometown bar.”
“You get to go to his shitty hometown bar,” Raven says. “How do you not see this for the opportunity it is? All of Bellamy’s high-school friends telling m us all the dirt they can remember? You know you want in on that.”
Nate sighs theatrically. “Fine. But if it sucks, I’m taking a taxi back and leaving you assholes.”
“You say that every time we go anywhere,” Bellamy says, finally finishing with his hair. “And you’ve never actually left us.”
“So far. There’s a first time for everything.”
The bar itself is nothing special, larger than their usual hangout in the city but otherwise unremarkable. Standard bar stuff, as far as Nate is concerned. It’s decently busy for a Friday night, but not packed, and it feels a little like a scene in a Western, when the outlaw walks into the saloon and and everyone stops talking and the piano stops playing. He doesn’t think everyone looks at them, but he feels conspicuous even before some scrawny white kid in goggles starts to call Bellamy.
Another kid, Asian and cute with short black hair and a stoner vibe, shuts him up before he gets it out, and Bellamy snorts, shakes his head.
“More friends?” Raven murmurs.
“Monty and Jasper. They’re probably about your speed, Miller.”
“Where’s your girl?”
“She’s not my–” Bellamy protests, but Raven takes over. “Cute blonde at the bar,” she says. “The one pretending not to look at us.”
“Cool.” He gives Bellamy a thump on the shoulder. “Good luck with that.”
The goggles kid–either Jasper or Monty–has calmed down by the time Nate makes it over to his table, and he manages a friendly, pretty normal smile. “Hi! We have a pitcher, want beer?”
The other kid, the cute stoner, adds, “It’s very shitty beer.”
“How old are you guys?” he asks, frowning. “There’s no way you get away with a fake ID in a town this small.”
“Oh ye of little faith,” says the goggles kid. “We’ve been successfully buying illegal booze since high school.”
“We’re twenty-one,” the other one supplies. He seems to be the straight man to his friend’s goofball, a dynamic Nate is used to. He doesn’t know a lot of goofballs, but for a gay guy he makes a pretty great straight man. “Two grades lower than Bellamy in high school. I’m Monty, and this is Jasper.”
“Nice to meet you guys. I’m Nate.”
Jasper frowns. “Everyone always calls you Miller.”
“Yeah, but it’s weird introducing yourself by last name.”
“Fair enough. You want our cheap beer or not?”
“Love some, thanks.” Monty pours and slides him one, and Nate takes a drink, making a face. “You weren’t kidding.”
“Of course we weren’t. Who lies about buying cheap beer?” Monty asks. “It’s Bud Lite, there’s a special for pitchers, and not all of us are famous rock stars. But if you want to get something better for the next round, we won’t say no.”
“How generous of you.” He takes a chug of the beer; the faster he drinks it, the less he has to taste. “So you’re in college, right?”
They are, rising seniors–Jasper at Oberlin and Monty at Cornell, which actually throws him a little. He knows most people don’t go to college with their high school friends, but something about how the two of them are together made him think they were always this joined at the hip.
“We’re planning to go to the same place once we graduate,” Jasper says, so at least there’s that. “Maybe move in together.”
“Jasper is hoping he’s going to have a serious girlfriend by then and he can move in with her instead of me.”
“The power of positive thinking, Monty! If I believe, it will happen. You should try it, you could get a girlfriend. Or a boyfriend!”
The addition comes in a hurried way that makes Nate assume it’s new and still not totally natural, but without any kind of judgement. Monty is newly out as queer and Jasper is still updating his perceptions, but he’s trying. That’s always nice.
And, well, interesting. Monty started off cute and keeps getting cuter.
“I think I’d have to do more than just believe to find a significant other,” Monty says, dry. “I’ve heard that it requires some bare minimum of effort.”
“Yeah, but believing is easy and it can’t hurt to try.” He turns his attention back to Nate, his gaze surprisingly sharp for how drunk he seems. “How’s dating as a celebrity? Weird?”
“I dont date much, but it probably would be weird. It’s always kind of–” He pauses, trying to figure out the right words. “I had a boyfriend when the band got big, and we tried to stay together, but it was just too complicated, you know? He was always kind of worried I was cheating on him when I was out of town.”
“That sucks,” says Monty.
“Were you cheating on him?” Jasper asks, and Monty elbows him. “What, I’m curious! He can tell us, we don’t know his ex.”
“If you cheated on your ex would you want to tell two random strangers in a bar?”
“It sounds better than telling friends or family.”
Nate has to smile. “I didn’t cheat on him. Bellamy’s really paranoid about this stuff, it rubs off. Not that I was ever tempted, but even after we broke up, he got in my head about people I slept with bragging to the Internet or something.”
“So you’re a rock star who doesn’t get laid?” Jasper asks, in the tones of a kid who just learned Santa isn’t real.
“I don’t usually hook up with civilians. Industry people, the ones who are more used to the lifestyle, that’s usually easier.” He shrugs. “I don’t worry they’re just doing it for a story to tell.”
“So you aren’t interested in sleeping with Jasper,” Monty supplies.
Nate snorts into his beer. “I didn’t think I was the uninterested party there.”
“I wouldn’t say I’m interested, but I’d definitely do it just so I could say I fucked a famous person. Honestly, I’d probably be over there trying to flirt with your drummer except that Wells already is and I’d feel like a terrible person.”
“You could go for Bellamy.”
“I don’t ever want to get on Clarke’s bad side. Wells I’d feel guilty, but Clarke would actually destroy my life.”
No wonder Bellamy likes her so much. “So I’m at the bottom of your Dropship hookup chart?” he asks Jasper. “Dude, come on.”
“Just practically speaking. I’m pretty straight, so Raven’s first, and I figure Bellamy and I have history, so–”
Monty snorts. “You barely talked to him in high school. Also I remember you in high school, I don’t think that’s really working in your favor. Jasper didn’t start developing muscle mass until college,” he adds, to Nate.
“This is Jasper with muscle mass?”
For a second, he’s worried he went too far, that the thoughtless quip actually hurt Jasper’s feelings and there will be a “Nathan Miller was super mean to me in a small-town dive bar” post doing the rounds on social media tomorrow, but then they both crack up.
“I’m secretly ripped!”
“You’re secretly less scrawny than you look,” says Monty. “Which is definitely an accomplishment, but less of one.”
“Screw you both,” he says, cheerful. His phone buzzes, and he checks it. “Literally screw you both, I’m leaving.”
“Did that girl text you back?”
“The power of positive thinking!”
“You’re going to miss out on the fancy beer Miller’s buying us,” says Monty.
“You can drink mine and tell me about it later.” He flashes Nate a smile. “Nice to meet you, hope we see you again, sorry not sorry I’m going on a date.”
Nate can’t argue with that. “Fair enough, have fun.”
“Thanks, you too!” He salutes, and then he’s gone, and Nate and Monty look at each other for an awkward second.
Nate breaks it. “So, next round. Is there an expensive beer you like?”
Monty’s face relaxes into a smile. “I think I can come up with something.”
*
I can’t believe you left me ALONE with NATHAN MILLER.
Monty sends the text while Miller–Nate, he can call Nathan Miller Nate–is in the bathroom, about an hour after Jasper leaves. Clarke is still talking to Bellamy and Wells is still talking to Raven, and it makes Monty feel weirdly paired off, even though he wasn’t trying and was definitely not prepared. He didn’t even do shots with Wells to get ready. He’s a little stoned and a little buzzed, but not enough of either and paranoid about getting worse. If he was drunk, he wouldn’t be thinking about it at all, but since he’s not drunk enough yet, he’s self-conscious about getting sloppy. It’s the actual worst.
yes it is amazing how good a friend I am, Jasper texts back. have fun!!!
If Monty had thought it was unlikely he’d see Bellamy, he had been unable to even comprehend seeing Nathan Miller. It was so outside of the realm of possibility that it wasn’t even worth thinking about, beyond unrealistic. If he had seen Miller, he’d thought that was all it would be, just admiring him from afar. He wasn’t supposed to be talking to him, getting a drink with him, hanging out with him like a normal person. Like those pictures of him in a mesh vest from some weird photoshoot last year hadn’t been the final straw that tipped Monty into identifying as bisexual.
The good news is that it’s not going that badly, but that’s bad news, at the same time. If he was an asshole who wasn’t giving Monty the time of day, it would be easy, one of those never-meet-your-heroes moments. Even if he’d just been friendly, it might not have been that bad. He could have been a perfectly nice guy with whom Monty had nothing in common, and they would have spent the evening making slightly stilted conversation before parting ways.
Instead, they’d gotten another round of drinks and Miller had asked if he was into video games and that was it. Monty had hesitantly offered that he was really into Fire Emblem right now, and Miller had apparently been playing it on the tour bus, and from there they branched out into favorite games, first gaming systems, upcoming releases they’re excited about. If Miller was just a guy he’d met here by chance–deeply unrealistic, as Monty is not the kind of person who meets new people at bars–he’d say they were hitting it off. He might be trying to flirt.
But Miller is Nate is Nathan Miller. He’s been profiled in Rolling Stone. He’s not quite a household name–that’s Bellamy, as the band’s front man–but if he said “I had drinks with the bass player for Dropship,” everyone would know what he was talking about, even his coding professor, who brags about not having learned anything about pop culture since 1989. People hear about Dropship just by being alive, and Monty doesn’t care that much about prestige, but this is going to be one hell of a what I did over the summer.
Assuming he tells anyone. Does bragging about getting drinks and talking about video games count as scuzzy? He doesn’t want to be one of those guys who takes advantage, who makes Miller feel like he can’t talk to civilians.
So when he gets back, Monty just asks. “So, can I tell my friends about this?”
“About what, exactly?”
“How Nathan Miller likes video games and drinks pretentious local IPAs.”
He snorts. “I talk about video games in like all my interviews, it’s not exactly a scoop.”
“You know what I mean.” But he raises his eyebrows like he doesn’t, forcing Monty to clarify, “I don’t want to be one of those people who just brags about–talking to you.”
It’s slightly awkward, both because it feels like he’s using “talking” as a euphemism and because he feels like he’s always slightly awkward, especially without Jasper, who tends to give him easy things to play off of. It had worried him, when he went off to college, that he’d never survive on his own, and he’s fine, has made plenty of friends, but then he’ll be back with Jasper and remember how much easier it feels, to be social with him.
Miller doesn’t seem to notice; he just smirks. “Nah, I love when people brag about talking to me. We can take some selfies if you want.”
“So when does it cross the line into bothering you?”
He drums his fingers on the table. “Good question. I think it’s more–just a vibe. It’s not hard to figure out the people who are just sucking up. Most people–even most super fans–are fine. Kind of nervous at first, but they just want to talk. I never mind people saying they met me. Except that it’s fucking surreal.”
Monty has to laugh. “Yeah, I bet.”
“You didn’t really seem that excited,” he observes, casual.
“I never seem like I’m showing that much emotion compared to Jasper. It’s kind of nice. Takes the pressure off.”
“You always get to be the cool one.”
“Or at least the calm one. It is pretty exciting,” he adds. “Meeting a celebrity.”
“You know Bellamy.”
“Not that well, like I said. And it’s not–” He glances towards the bar, Bellamy leaning into Clarke, the two of them in a world of their own, just like the old days. “I didn’t get to vote on his senior superlatives, but I would have said he was most likely to make it in show business. He’s got charisma. So it’s cool, but not much of a surprise.”
Nate nods. “Yeah, I remember when I first met him. I knew he was going to take me places.”
“You’re twenty-three, right?” he asks. “His age?”
“Yeah.”
He shakes his head. “I feel like you’re too young to be famous. I’m still worried about having a real job, and you’ve been making a living for years.”
“We got lucky,” says Nate. “Shit, so fucking lucky. We only had a few months of shitty gigs before someone decided we were the real deal. And it still took time for us to be able to quit our day jobs.”
“So your life is weird.”
“So weird.”
“Is it better or worse being way out here?”
He shrugs. “It’s different. Our profile is a lot higher. In New York, if someone sees me, they’re not sure it’s me. But everyone knows we’re here, everyone knows Bellamy, so there’s no question. But you’re also really paranoid about coming off weirdly, so–”
“So everyone’s like me.”
That makes him think. “Nah, not everyone is as cool as you are.”
The bar’s lighting is low enough that Monty doesn’t think the flush will be obvious. At least his voice is steady. “I didn’t think cool for rock stars involved playing a ton of video games.”
“You play good video games, so yeah. You’re cool.” He considers. “You said you didn’t have a PS4 yet, right?”
“Yeah.”
“You should stop by sometime and play,” he says. “Bellamy’s too bad at video games and Raven’s too good.”
Monty’s jaw doesn’t drop, but it’s close. “You want to play video games with me?”
“Why not?”
“I don’t know. Because you must have better people to play video games with?”
“What’s wrong with you?” He clucks his tongue. “Full disclosure? You’re cute and chill and I want to hang out with you more. You want to tell all your friends that you spent part of your summer vacation playing games and flirting with a guy in a band, I’m cool with that.”
The words come out easily, somehow. It doesn’t even make sense, he’s never smooth, but talking to Miller–to Nate, to this guy, who’s chill and down-to-earth and nice–is natural. They get along. “I don’t kiss and tell,” he says. “So if you ever want me to keep quiet, all you have to do is kiss me.”
Nate laughs. “Yeah? That doesn’t sound so bad.”
“I hope it’s not.”
“I hope so too. So, what are you doing tomorrow?”
Jasper is going to be the worst possible combination of smug and jealous, but he’ll live. He’s flirting with a cute boy who likes video games; it’s awesome. “Nothing so far.”
“Cool. I’ll figure out when my asshole bandmates aren’t around and give you a call.”
“You don’t have my number.”
“Not yet. But we’re not even done with our drinks. I’m not going anywhere yet.”
They have two more rounds and take the same taxi back. Nate gets dropped off first, takes a minute to study Monty’s face, lingering on his lips, before he says, “I’m not kissing you tonight.”
“No?”
“I want you to have a couple stories you can share.” But he does peck him on the cheek. “Night, Monty.”
He texts Jasper immediately. You’re never going to believe what happened.
The response takes a little longer; hopefully his night was good too. I’m the best friend in the entire universe?????
Honestly, Monty replies, smiling in the dark of the backseat, you just might be.
*
“So, it sounds like both your bandmates did pretty well for themselves in Arcadia,” the interviewer tells Nate, like he doesn’t know Bellamy and Raven have significant others now. He found out way before the media did. “Are you jealous?”
“Jealous of what, exactly?” he asks, with a shrug. “Wells isn’t my type. Clarke is even less my type. And don’t even start with Bellamy being my type.”
She laughs, apparently genuinely amused, which makes Nate like her more. Most of the questions reporters ask aren’t really their own fault, especially for shit like this. They’re doing rapid-fire press for a new single and everyone only has a few minutes. This website likes gossip, so the interviewer wants gossip. Nate doesn’t blame her.
“Trust me, even I’m getting tired of asking if you and Bellamy are secretly sleeping together. I was relieved I could stop asking about Bellamy and Raven. But is it tough? Being the last single member of the band? Does it get lonely?”
On the surface, the question is absurd. Bellamy and Raven are dating people, not off to war. He’s not alone. He’s not even single, although he hasn’t told anyone about Monty yet, not even his bandmates. They were fairly casual over the summer in Arcadia, didn’t even hook up very much. It was like having a friend with benefits, except the benefit rarely went farther than kissing. Nate didn’t mind, he liked the closeness of it, the intimacy, like getting close to Monty, but the last few months have been a weird sort of limbo, Monty at school, applying for jobs, figuring things out.
He is lonely, but not because he’s single and his friends aren’t. And Monty’s graduating next month, already has an apartment lined up in the city. Him and Jasper together, despite Monty having a boyfriend–they agreed they can work on cohabitation once they’ve been in the same place a little longer.
“I guess that’s not how it is for me. I don’t feel worse about being single when my friends aren’t? Maybe I will, I get why people do. But I like Clarke and Wells, so mostly I’ve got more friends. And they help out keeping an eye on Bellamy’s sister when we’re busy. Not to get too sappy, but mostly being in Arcadia means my family grew. Hard to be lonely when that happens.”
She looks dubious, for which Nate can’t blame her. If he didn’t have Monty, he doesn’t know what he’d say, but as it is, it’s pretty easy. Arcadia was good to him too, and his life is about to get better. Maybe he’ll do another interview with her, when everything is said and done and he and Monty have decided to go public. Let her know how he was really feeling.
For now, though, it’s just for him. Him and Monty, Jasper, the rest of the band. All the people who really matter.
“So, nothing big to report? No one special in your life?”
“Everyone in my life is special,” he says, with a shit-eating grin, and she laughs again.
“Of course, sorry. Anything else you’d like our readers to know?”
“I’m good,” he says, meaning it. “Great, even. No one has to worry about me.”
Once he’s out, he texts Monty: Ngl, I’m looking forward to telling people I’m kissing you.
I’m ready to brag whenever, Monty shoots back. Can’t wait to get all those dating a rockstar points. Finally, I’ll be cool.
Nate smiles. You’re the coolest, he says, and puts his phone in his pocket as he waits for Bellamy and Raven to finish up so they can leave. It’s not exactly the life he was expecting, not this time last year, not when he was in high school, not when he was a kid, deciding what he wanted to be when he grew up.
He never thought it could be this good, and in another month, it will be even better.
He’s got no complaints.

Pitch Please: Pt. 1
The game is simple. I reach out to my friends and ask them to give me a product and a demographic. I take 30 minutes to research the product and demographic and come up with an overlaying concept. I then flesh out each concept into a full campaign.
Here goes:
Head and Shoulders for Goths
Hide the Light - When you’re a goth, your image is everything. You set yourself apart with the unique juxtaposition of dark clothes and lack of Vitamin D. But you don’t want those colors to mesh (e.g. dandruff). Head & Shoulders will keep your darks dark and your dandruff absent. We could produce full-blown print pieces focusing on the pristine shoulders of goth kids’ black shirts. Maybe use quotes from famous bands (e.g. Friday I’m in Love, etc), or lines like “Stand Out for Other Reasons.” We could change the bottle color from the traditional white and blue to all black with a red streak, especially since the bottle top and icon already somewhat resemble a face with goth/emo hair. We could also create H&S listening rooms in places like Hot Topic, Spencer’s, or malls in general. These would be self-contained kiosks with decorated in all black and dark red. Popular goth bands could play through the area and you could get your hair washed with Head & Shoulders by a professional hairstylist.
What’s This? - What does a quirky goth love more than the combination of bondage pants and tank tops? The Nightmare Before Christmas. For this TV-driven campaign, we could license the characters of the Tim Burton classic—but with a little twist. We could use the famous scenes from the movie, but without snow. And at the end, we could overlay the H&S logo over the screen. For print, we could use stills from Christmastown and Jack in the Santa costume, edit out the snow, and use copy like, “No Flakes” with the H&S logo. We could put statues of the characters of the movie in warm environments, such as Atlanta, Austin, Santa Fe (especially), and San Diego, with the H&S logo. To further drive this point, we could put these statues in snowy areas with a heating mechanism around the area so any snow in the area would melt. Thus creating an even more unique look with snow everywhere else, except around these statues of Nightmare Before Christmas characters.
Something Different - The goth look is very important. It’s more than a fashion. Goths want to do their own thing, they don’t care about what the general public has to say. Often times you’ll see them proudly wearing full garb in the middle of summer. And they like it that way. This campaign will highlight their individuality in the face of the status quo, by focusing on their unique hairstyles and colors. Most people know H&S prevents dandruff, but they don’t realize that it’s also just a really good shampoo. The print spots will feature cropped images of unique goths from the forehead up with wild hairstyles and colors with taglines like “Head & Shoulders. Above & Beyond,” “Do(o) Your Own Thing,” and “Define Your Own Look” This could also transfer well into disruptive billboards. Same style; same tags, but the hairstyles could extend outside the traditional shape of the billboards. We could also further promote individuality by creating a new line of design-inspired bottles. All breaking the traditional H&S style guide and just going all out with colors and/or bottle shapes.
Famous Monsters - This is a pretty short and sweet concept. Goths love old monster movies and TV shows. So we bring em back. Our print campaign could use characters from shows like The Addams Family and The Munsters, etc. (famous characters with black clothing) and superimpose dandruff on their shoulders. We could use taglines like, “They Were Scary for a Different Reason” For the TV spots, we could use scenes from old, Paramount monster movies and Hitchcock films. We could use “tense” scenes where characters are screaming, but instead of screaming at the actual monster or murderer, they would be afraid of dandruff on their shoulders. (This would work especially well with the scene from Psycho) For the out of home spots, we could dress up bus stops like the famous shower from Psycho and place a bottle of H&S in there. We could line subways with Munster family photos (dandruff and all) and have the logo in the corner. We could even have H&S sponsored movie nights where they play old monster movies and episodes of the Munsters and Addams Family. We could even encourage them to dress up (similar to a screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show).
H&S Pop - Maybe this is more of a personal experience, but a lot of the goths I’ve ever met have an odd affinity towards Asian culture, especially Korean Pop music, or K-Pop. So, we full-on K-Pop with this campaign. Get the elaborate pop stars, go for the crazy, epilepsy-inducing visuals, and straight-up Korean-style print spots. It would be wild, it would be different, and I’m pretty sure the goths would love it.
Gum for NRA Members
That Pop Pop Pop - When playing connect-the-dots between this product and that demographic, the first things that come to mind are the sounds. That satisfying pop that comes with both blowing a bubble and pulling the trigger. So we make an audio-centered campaign. The TV spots could be set in intense battles throughout history (Civil War, World Wars, etc.). Using Saving Private Ryan-esque cinematography, we could have the visuals go through battles (on land or by air), but before any rounds are fired, it would focus on the soldier or pilot blowing up and popping a gum bubble. Followed with a tagline like, “Lock and Load,” or “Certain Sounds Echo Through Eternity,” or something like that. Print and outdoor could also have similar images of gritty soldiers or pilots throughout history. Most of the images could be in black and white or dark coloring, but have the bubble coming out of his or her mouth a bright white, pink, or whatever the color of the gum. With the same taglines and the logo in the corner. Terrestrial/online radio would clearly be in use. Paint the same picture over audio and follow them up with the chewing gum pop. This is kind of a very loosely described campaign, but it’s the first thing I could think of.
Calm - Another thing I thought of was the raw emotion of having to use a gun. Though most situations would be high pressure, the person using the gun would also have to remain calm and collected. What does gum do? It takes the edge off to a certain extent. So why not focus on that? This campaign could go a lot of ways, but the most innocent and non-blatant way to go about it would be having it set in hunting scenarios. The TV spots would put you in the shoes of a hunter. Use the time to show the patience needed to hunt. The boring parts. The parts involving walking to different spots and tree stands. The parts where the hunter is just waiting. All while you can see the hunter is chewing on something. Suddenly a certified trophy comes across. The camera cuts to the face of the hunter. Wide-eyed, visibly shaken as he brings his rifle to his face. There’s a noise. The trophy deer or whatever gets spooked and starts running. The hunter is now sweating with the scope in his eye, the camera pans down to the hunter’s mouth as he slowly bites down on his gum to calm himself as he pulls the trigger. The hunter quietly smiles. The words “Keep Calm” comes across the screen with the name of the gum. Our radio spots could feature similar scenarios of high intensity calmed down by chewing gum. Whether it be hunting, playing sports, watching sports, protecting your family, or whatever. All ending with “Keep Calm.” The gum packaging could also come with little zen tips. Every time you take out a stick, there could be a little tip to keep calm printed on the inside of the foil.
Protect Yourself - Most people buy guns for the satisfaction of protection. They want to know, when shit goes south, they’re capable of protecting themselves and/or their families. So, what do we do? We take this same mindset and attribute it to protecting your teeth or bad breath. We can use rhetoric like “The Best Offense is a Good Defense” and “It’s Better to be Protected and Not Need it Than Need it and Not Have it.” You know, the same kind of stuff most 2A disciples spout off as a need for keeping their guns. The imagery can be a juxtaposition of grittiness with clean smiles. Sort of like the Orbit “Dirty Mouth” campaign, but with less humor. Video spots can focus on American heroes (cops, firefighters, members of the military, etc.) doing the dangerous jobs they do, with hints of clean teeth shining through. At the end of the spots, we use the tag “Keep Protected” and then talk about how the gum fights tooth decay, whitens teeth and fights bad breath. The print spots can use the exact same imagery, but be more of a focus on individual American heroes. This can be long-copy pieces profiling the heroic actions of specific individuals. In the end, we can talk about how, though it pales in comparison to these brave actions, is protecting our protectors.
Hero/Come Packing - Who doesn’t want to be a hero? Well, with this gum, you can. The campaign can make a hero out of anyone. This could be a fun, tongue-in-cheek campaign putting people in dire situations where they desperately need a stick of gum (first dates, family gatherings, etc.) and have a well prepared war-hero-type guy cut into the situation and provide a stick of gum. This could be a spokesperson-type character or we could have a different well-prepared individual come in each time. Regardless, the tagline would be “Come Packing” Print pieces could be longer, copy-driven spots focusing in great detail about the horrible situation and how this gum saved their skins. We could put up kiosks outside popular dates spots (movie theaters, romantic overlooks, bowling alleys, barcades, or wherever the hell kids go to smooch) and hand out free gum to whoever may need it. Though it may seem like this is geared towards kids and people looking for an intimate connection, I feel gun nuts would resonate with the hero character and the “Come Packing” tag.

MUN QUESTIONS.
Q1: if you could write your character your way in their own movie, what would it be called, what style would it be filmed in, and what would it be about?: I can’t really imagine creating a movie about just my muse (^ ^ ; )
Q2: what would their soundtrack / score sound like?: 1970s - 1980s Jpop, with some bittersweet piano pieces
Q3: why did you start writing this character?: I began writing Pinoko because I thought it’d be interesting to explore more of Pinoko’s character and background. There’s so much potential for angst!
Q4: what first attracted you to this character?: Her personality and origins for sure! Pinoko is both spunky and tries to be a ‘50s housewife, in her own way. Her backstory is also depressing, especially the limitations Pinoko is burdened with, like not physically growing up, being unable to swim, not being taken seriously as an actual adult, being unable to handle stress or tiredness, etc.
Q5: describe the biggest thing you dislike about your muse: I do have a limit with Pinoko’s “tantrums”, but even that can be traced back to the way her body’s constructed.
Q6: what do you have in common with your muse?: I tend to stay indoors a lot, and I don’t have many irl friends
Q8: what characters does your muse have interesting interactions with?: Pretty much with anyone that comes her way, especially with @crimson-lili and @princely-alucard currently.
Q9: what gives you inspiration to write your muse?: Some of Yuki Kajiura’s songs, the original manga, and some episodes from the 2004 Black Jack anime.
Q10: how long did this take you to complete?: three days.
