Chapter 10

“A covenant was offered to me years ago. My parents told me the offer was revoked. I’d done too much...”

 “No,” Archer says. “No. An offer is made to every child and once made, it remains active until Firstdeath.” 

Expression agonized, Clay whispers, “But...you don’t know the things I’ve done.”

 “I don’t need to know. Nothing you’ve done can compare to the things I did, and yet, when I was ready, I was welcomed with open arms.” 

The only thing I’m getting from this is that you can commit genocide and they’d still accept you. 

Two Prynne guards approach our well-lit square. Just before they reach us, however, they veer to the left, as if deep, deep inside they know to avoid what their eyes cannot see. 

Messengers in action. I can’t see them either, but I can see the result of them. 

Surprise! There’s more to the world—worlds—than I ever thought possible.

And they never once think that there might be more than Myriad and Troika? That the beings who view all living humans as being cannon fodder for their war HAVE AN AGENDA?!

“You should have told me you were a guy before I showered in front of you,” I snap at him. 

Unabashed, he says, “You’re in a mood. Is it that time of the month for you, too? Have our cycles finally synced?”

Again, as an author, you have the power to write literally anything. And the author actively chose to write Archer as a misogynistic pig. 

“Have you accepted your importance? Have you realized you’re the final drop of water that causes the cup to overflow?” 

For a war that’s been raging for millenia, I refuse to believe that a single person would somehow stop all of that. 

“She doesn’t want you.” 

“She doesn’t know what she wants.”

Hey bozos, not only is she standing right there, but she is also perfectly capable of making up her own mind. 

“I won’t let you hurt her the way you hurt Dior,” Archer says through gritted teeth. 

Dior? 

“By the time I finished with your darling,” Killian says, his tone nothing but silk and heat, and yet I pick up the underlying note of his rage, “she was begging me for more.” 

That rage...over a girl... Killian is doing his best to hide his feelings, but he’s failing. 

He loved Dior, didn’t he?

I love how the author set up this trilogy about the eternal war between heaven and hell. And the two main love interests hate each other… Because of a girl. 

 The sky is nothing but snow, ice and rock—and falling straight for us.

Chapter 10 summary: Ten and Clay get settled, and Archer encourages them to take a nap. Ten wakes up from a nightmare to find Sloan over her. Sloan is insanely eager to jump Archer’s bones, but that excitement quickly dies when Ten explains that not only was this Bow, but also a TL. 

There’s this really long scene where Ten leaves the magical hut to pee. The only thing missing from it is the actual description of her urinating. As she’s pulling her pants back up, she realises that Killian is there, and gets angry that he’d watched her pee. 

The four of them go back to the cave, for no real reason. Clay then says that he’s done being indecisive about which side to choose. He had been reluctant earlier because he’d apparently done a lot of terrible things. Archer had warned him that you never know when your firstlife is going to end… Which is such a shitty thing to say to somebody who’s probably not even 20. There’s also this bit about Archer saying about how he’d escort the souls of dead children to the afterlife, where they’d finish growing, and then chose a side. After having been indoctrinated in Troika. Clay signs up with Troika, and then bro-hugs Archer. 

Ten warns that they need to leave now, and they start to go. But right outside, they run into Killian, who starts to go at it with Archer. They start screaming about some girl named Dior. 

Sloan wants to leave, but Clay wants to stay. Clay’s actions are confusing to Ten, because he met Archer a few hours earlier; why does he suddenly want to go to his secondlife immediately after signing?

The earth starts to shake around them, and they think that this is another battle going on around them. But with horror, they realise that the battles have loosened the snow and rock on the nearby mountain peak, and there’s now an avalanche.

I've said this before but IDK how many folks have seen it - but on my posts, if you are inspired by a thing I have specifically written ( something from me that isn't just a general common trope, like omegaverse or something) I would appreciate being asked if you're going to write a story based on it.

And please do not tag another author on my posts asking them to write it.

The thing about having Ollie as your favourite character is that you feel like you need to defend him constantly. People are beefing with that man all the time including writers. Especially writers!

I expected this when I became a Guy Gardner fan. It doesn’t even bother me that much when people misconstrue him because yk, fair enough.

But Ollie?

The way people sometimes refuse to acknowledge that writing choices that clearly go against established canon should mean something is endlessly frustrating to me. We don't have to agree on the interpretation, but these writing choices SHOULD mean something.

Otherwise, it's shitty writing.

ive been rereading tnp and it’s bothering me so much i need to mention it here; it’s kind of insane how much the erins bend over backwards to make brambleclaw deputy, it’s kind of just nonsensical.

not even him not having an apprentice when he’s picked, though that is kind of wild, he just… there’s basically no good reason other than him being a main pov character and tigerstar’s son. literally any other thunderclan warrior who’s had an apprentice (barring maybe ashfur) would have been a better choice. thornclaw dustpelt sandstorm cloudtail brackenfur- brackenfur is one that firestar explicitly considers and the reasoning why he decides not to is so incredibly weak ‘oh i dont think he’d be right for leader’ number one what are you talking about number 2 then use him being deputy as an opportunity to help him become right for leader are you telling me firestar thinks the cat he once considered letting die in a fire is a better fit for leader than the cat he half mentored. dustpelt is clearly an experienced warrior, sandstorm is someone firestar obviously has faith in, thornclaw is experienced and i’m pretty sure you even see firestar consult him a few times (cloudtail is iffy bc thats cloudtail but he’d really be a better choice, just how he treats daisy and her kits would be an interesting justification for firestar making him second-in-command) but honestly besides the narrative jumping through hoops to act like the other very viable options are either secretly bad choices or otherwise ignore them (why is bramble the only cat we ever see jump to help firestar with stuff they just wrote everyone else to be silent or w/e) but in twilight where he arguably acts the most like de-facto deputy in leaf and squirrel’s pov he’s framed as a jackass half the book??? why would you do that if you intend to make him actual leader?? in his trial run of being kinda-not-deputy you just make him use his semi-authority to be cold and fucking mean to his friend and her buddy??? like i see him being qualified due to having experience being the travel group’s leader and whatnot, but barely anything else is done to make him realistically more qualified than anyone else- he just angsts about his ambitions and gets handed the position because starclan vouched for him for some damn reason even though by his society’s laws he should not be in that position

Doodle Gets Radicalized by Shitty Bad Chinese Historical Romance Novels:

Episode #503: Marriage, Social Mobility, and Reason Number One Thousand Seven Hundred and Fifty Three on Why the Patriarchy Can Get Fucked

While reading another SBCHRN today, came across a saying that went something along the lines of "a man should marry a woman of a lower rank, but a woman should marry a man of a higher rank". (That said, it's still not really acceptable to marry too far outside your station, e.g. a peasant woman marrying a wealthy official would be seen as, like, a gold digger)

Which is interesting, bc this means that people ARE aware that marriage was the only way for a woman to improve her social standing back in the day. AND that there's a sort of unspoken social contract that since the system is already rigged against women in that way, men kind of have a moral obligation to uplift lower class women if they can.

Which is...nice?

BUT

THAT means the welfare of not-so-well-off women are basically hinging on rich men not being assholes. (I don't think I need to elaborate on why that's. Like. A lot to hope for.)

Which is BAD. The welfare of women relying solely on the goodwill of the men in their lives, in a time when being a woman meant having essentially no financial independence, little to no education, and very few rights, is like, really really bad. "Men should uplift women through marriage :)" is AT MOST a nice gesture, a nice thought to have, a safety net, but it CANNOT BE a replacement for a broken system that is inherently rigged against and actively punishes women for being women.

balance between complex writing and accessible, easy to follow storylines can be done. like, its been done before, plenty of times. BTAS is the best example I can think of rn of this but like. the reason its basically the Batman Bible for so many people is because of its complex themes and stories AND its easily accessible nature and ability to like actually be fun to consume instead of just being a total drag all the time.. . like its pretty simple !! to achieve !! balance !!!
