How will Tariffs effect the Historical Costume Community?
How will Tariffs effect the Historical Costume Community?
Maybe it was divine inspiration that I chose the summer of 2025 to semi-retire, because textiles are about to increase, ya'll! - so are avocados, strawberries, and fruits and vegetables from Mexico; electronics (from China) - like your cell phones and computers, televisions. But it doesn't stop there: building supplies, car parts, clothing, toys, medical supplies, medications, and much, much more is about to increase!
Why?
Because of Trump's brilliant economic plan to implement tariffs on countries like China, Mexico, and Canada on "Day one," to quote him directly.
Yes, that was sarcasm. For those who haven't been following the dire warnings economists worldwide and in America were shouting to the rooftops, i.e., that tariffs will cause economic disaster for many companies in the USA, and you still think the cost of gas and eggs and groceries are going to decrease in the Trump administration, boy oh boy are ya'll gonna have a huge awakening come January 20, 2025.
The way tariffs work is like this: American companies, who purchase goods outside of America, "are the ones who pay the tariffs" - NOT the companies sending goods to America for American consumers to buy. American companies will be paying MORE to import goods from other companies, and that increase will be passed on to the American people. These large corporations, who have already been recording record breaking profits since 2020, will use Trump’s tariffs as an excuse to raise their prices even more! – because there are no regulations on what they can charge the public. ALSO, they will be receiving more tax cuts, while the rest of us, especially the middle class who already carry the burden of the majority of the taxes in the USA, will see an increase in our taxes. These tariffs will cost us an additional $2500 a year per household. That doesn't sound like much, but it adds up, especially for many who are already barely scraping by - myself included.
How will these tariffs impact the historical costume community specifically?
While Mexico, China and Canada are our top exports (places we buy from), the following countries are ALSO popular sources that USA consumers import textiles and clothing:
Vietnam
India
Bangladesh
Indonesia
Honduras
The majority of fine woolen textiles are exported from the UK. The cost of wool will also be affected, with costs going up from 10 to 20%. Maybe that doesn’t sound like much, but when you’re already paying $30 to $40 (and more) a yard for a good wool product an additional $3 to $6 per yard will carry a punch on my client’s budgets.
Companies like Silk Baron, who import silk fabrics in bulk from places like India, will have to increase their prices by a minimum of 20%. The price of silk is already $20 to $30 or more a yard through Silk Baron, and we can expect their prices to increase to $22 to $24, or $33 to $36 a yard.
Fabric-Store.com, used to only charge $12 a yard for linen, but beginning in 2020 they have raised their prices every year and are now charging $18 a yard. The impacts of tariffs will only increase these costs.
Trump’s tariffs on China will raise prices by 60%, and 10 to 20% to other countries who import goods to the USA. Tariffs impact consumers, NOT the companies who produce the products and ship them to American businesses.
Walmart and Lowes have already rung a warning nell that their prices are about to increase. According to an article by Reuters, a Walmart spokesperson stated, “We're concerned that significantly increased tariffs could lead to increased costs for our customers at a time when they are still feeling the remnants of inflation"…"Trump has vowed to make tariffs, which are a fraction of U.S. tax collections, central to his economic agenda. Executives have been increasingly fielding questions on the subject, with many noting ongoing efforts to continue to diversify their supply chains, particularly away from China, Trump's top target.”
Additionally, the CFO of Lowe’s, Brandon Silk, said: "Roughly 40% of our cost of goods sold are sourced outside of the U.S., and that includes both direct imports and national brands through our vendor partners"…"And as we look at the potential impacts (of tariffs), it certainly would add to product costs." These tariffs will impact the cost of appliances and building supplies, which means the cost of new construction will increase.
Grocery stores, who were already price gouging consumers since the pandemic, are beginning to raise their prices. By the way, the President of the United States (or the Vice President) does not control the prices that big corporations charge consumers, it’s greed on the part of these companies like Albertson’s, Fred Meyer, etc., who set the prices. Harris planned to institute regulations to control their greed and lower the cost of groceries, etc., but Trump’s “tariffs,’ WILL absolutely affect American consumers.
Furthermore, voters, pissed off about Biden’s handling of Hamas, voted for Trump in protest. By the way, Trump and his entire administration are 100% pro-Israel, and support the atrocities Netanyahu has perpetrated against innocent civilians who have nothing to do with the terrorists of Hamas.
Voting is the equivalent to an open book examination in college or high school. All the information needed to educate yourselves on the issues are available at your fingertips, but you have to open the damn book! Voters, angry about Israel’s genocide of the Palestinian people, chose not to educate themselves about what control or influence on world politics a Vice President actually HAS. Harris was not pro-Israel, but publicly stated she was against Palestinian and Israeli aggression.
When textile and supply prices go up, those increases affect the cost for costumers. The tariffs that will be implemented will increase costs by 60% from any goods purchased from China. For my business, this will impact such items as “freshwater pearls,” that I use on my costume embellishment. China is the world’s largest exporter of pearls, which are “grown” or farmed in that country.
Coates embroidery thread, which I use in my embroidery machines, are based in Mexico. With Trump’s tariffs the cost will go up 20%. A spool of Coates gold metallic thread is $12.99 at JoAnns. That will increase by roughly $2.60 per spool.
Faux Baleen from Germany, used in corsetry, will go up anywhere from 10 to 20%.
American Duchess, who contracts with shoemakers in China to produce their historical shoes will have to raise their prices by 60%!!
Buttons, thread, fabric, notions, everything you can imagine used in the creation of historical costumes are imported from China. Tariffs will have a noticeable impact on the entire historical costume community, which is already an expensive hobby.
At a time when American’s are paying more for goods and groceries than other countries, not only will tariffs impact the economy, but Trump and the Republicans as outlined in Project 2025, plan to cut Social Security by no less than 20%, but they also are planning to do away with it entirely, to include social security disability, which millions of disabled and retired Americans depend on to exist.
In a word, and I don’t give a flying fig that I’m bringing politics into historical costuming, you voted for more inflation and higher cost of goods. It would behoove all ya’ll among the younger generations to use Google and research how the stock market crash of 1929 happened, and how tariffs played a significant role in exacerbating the Great Depression.
The Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act, passed in June 1930, was a key factor. This act raised tariffs on thousands of imported goods in an attempt to protect American industries and farmers, which had unintended consequences such as:
Retaliation by Other Countries: Many countries responded by imposing their own tariffs on American goods, which led to a significant decline in international trade.
Reduction in Exports and Imports: American exports and imports fell by about 67% during the Great Depression. This decline in trade worsened the economic downturn.
Global Economic Impact: The tariffs contributed to a global economic slowdown, making it harder for the U.S. and other countries to recover from the depression.
These consequences ended in joblessness, as companies closed down. Read about the how the banks went under, people lost their jobs, resulting in widespread foreclosures, and the rise in shanty towns to house millions of homeless who were once productive members among the middle class.
Is this hyperbole? No! If you do not educate yourselves, history will repeat itself. Trump’s tariffs will impact Americans on a catastrophic level, as well as impact the global economy.
So, next time, maybe study for the “open book test” rather than sourcing your information from word of mouth like, you know, Fox News.
Hang on to your butts, it’s gonna get rough for all of us.
P.S: If you voted for him, and your fee-fees are hurt by this article, don't you dare say one hateful thing in my blog or my Facebook page or you will be blocked.

Richard Woodman
Writer who drew on his own experience at sea in a series of novels and historical works about the British merchant navy
“The end was anticlimax. We slipped home unnoticed. Britain turned no hair at our arrival, as just as she has turned no hair at our extinction.” When Richard Woodman published Voyage East in 1988, he knew that the mercantile world depicted within it, which he had joined aged 16, was gone.
The first-person novel – which never reads like fiction – describes the voyage of a cargo liner carrying goods and passengers from Liverpool to Singapore, Hong Kong, Kobe and Shanghai in the mid-1960s. There is a moment, off the coast of Borneo, when the captain sees a vessel with half a dozen grey aluminium boxes on her foredeck: “What the devil are they?” he asks the pilot. “‘They’re containers, Captain,’ the Pilot replied, and no one on the bridge heard the sentence of death pronounced upon us.”
Woodman, who has died aged 80, became the memorialist of the merchant fleets. Between 2008 and 2016 he wrote the history of the British merchant navy in five volumes, followed by A Low Set of Blackguards, a two-volume history (2016-17) of the East India Company.
His outstanding contribution came through his three second world war convoy histories: Arctic Convoys (1994), Malta Convoys (2000) and The Real Cruel Sea (2005). These are works of passion, based on experience and scrupulous research.
The loss of life among merchant seamen was proportionately greater than in any of the armed services and the recognition they received far less. From the beginning of the war a seafarer’s pay was stopped the minute his ship was sunk. “Time spent fighting for his life on a float or lifeboat was an unpaid excursion,” wrote Woodman.
While Winston Churchill acknowledged the crucial importance of the Battle of the Atlantic to national survival, it was not until 2012 that those who had served in the Arctic convoys, and had taken the highest casualties of all, were retrospectively honoured.
Born in north London, Richard was the elder son of Rosalie (nee Cann) and Douglas Woodman, a civil service administrator. Though he was far from the sea, his imagination was captured by the works of Arthur Ransome, Daniel Defoe, RM Ballantyne and Alan Villiers, and his enthusiasm nurtured by Sea Scout membership.
He was the youngest member of the Sea Scout crew that sailed the ex-German yawl Nordwind in the 1960 Tall Ships race and, despite failing all but two of his O-levels, he was accepted as an indentured apprentice with the Alfred Holt (Blue Funnel) line in 1960.
His first long trip to Australia came as a midshipman on the SS Glenarty, returning via the US: “I had been round the world before I would have been allowed inside a British pub.” Life on board ship took place in an uncompromising, all-male environment: the almost compulsory swearing, drinking and sexist banter encouraged the development of “a carapace behind which we hid our private selves”.
Woodman responded eagerly to the hands-on education in seamanship and navigation, developed his writing and sketching through the log-keeping and read his way through the excellent ships’ libraries provided by the Marine Society. He completed his four-year apprenticeship and gained his second mate’s certificate. He was, however, in love and hated saying goodbye to his girlfriend, Christine Hite, an art student, for many months at a time.
He left Blue Funnel in the mid-1960s and went to work for the Ocean Weather Service, where he discovered how vicious the North Atlantic winter weather systems could be – and how pitilessly an ex-second world war corvette would roll. Fortunately it was not long before a temporary position became available with Trinity House, the corporation charged with the maintenance of navigation marks around England, Wales and the Channel Islands.
The position became permanent; he and Christine married in 1969 and settled in Harwich, Essex, near the Trinity House east coast depot, and he served the corporation for most of the rest of his life.
The work at sea was varied, challenging, sometimes dangerous. Precise navigation, seamanship and attention to detail were essential qualities, but Woodman also found time to write. His first novel, The Eye of the Fleet, was published in 1981. This introduced a series of 14 adventures featuring the young Nathaniel Drinkwater, a hero somewhat in the Horatio Hornblower mode but bearing the unmistakable stamp of a writer who was also a sailor.
Despite his professional career being in motorised vessels, Woodman loved traditional gaff-rigged yachts, particularly his own Kestrel and then Andromeda, in which he and Christine explored the east coast rivers and beyond. The action of his nautical novels often turns on neat, seamanlike manoeuvres as well as including varied and closely observed seascapes.
His productivity was astonishing. He often wrote two or three novels a year and soon added non-fiction to his output. When he became captain of Trinity House Vessel Patricia, he achieved this by having two desks, one from which he could conduct official business, the other hidden behind a door, with a page from the work in progress always ready in the typewriter.
Meanwhile, in his job he was extremely focused, conscientious and painstaking. Although some remember him as being of the “old school”, Jill Kernick, the first woman in almost 500 years to work at sea for Trinity House, credits him with helping her break through traditional barriers in the early 80s.
In 1997 Woodman retired to write full time, but was soon elected a Younger Brother of Trinity House, and then an Elder Brother, the first time a former employee was accorded this honour. He was diagnosed with cancer in 2003 but there was no let-up in his work rate. His last completed novel, A River in Borneo (2022), harks back to 60s Indonesia but sets its final scene in a Colchester hospice.
He is survived by Christine and their children, Abigail and Edward, and grandson, Arlo.

Chinese Porcelains Recovered From Centuries-Old Shipwreck Head to Auction
The porcelain vessels spent over 300 years at the bottom of the South China Sea.
Trawling the seabed near the south coast of Vietnam in 1989, a Vietnamese fisherman stumbled upon the remains of the wreck of a ship that was traveling from China to Jakarta when it sunk some three centuries before. Among the haul, which included everyday items like bamboo combs, tweezers, and dice, were a whopping 48,288 pieces of Qing dynasty porcelain. In Jakarta, traders of the globe-spanning Dutch East India Company had planned to transport the vessels to Holland. Some 28,000 were sold at a 1992 Christie’s auction in Amsterdam, their likely planned destination, for a total of $7.3 million.
Now, on October 10, a group of 20 of these vases, with all their historic resonance, is being offered in an online auction at Stair Galleries, in Hudson, New York, which handles traditional furniture and fine art. Ranging between five to eight inches-high and displaying intricate floral patterns typical of traditional Chinese pottery, the group bears a very modest high estimate of $1,200.
The “Vung Tau Cargo,” so called for the Vietnamese coastal city of Vũng Tàu, near which it was discovered, has had a notable history since it was raised from its watery grave by the state-owned Vietnam Salvage Corporation in a joint venture with none other than the famed Swedish treasure hunter Sverker Hallstrom.
As for the porcelain booty that wasn’t auctioned off at Christie’s Amsterdam in 1992, some went to Hallstrom’s personal collection, other pieces to the Vietnamese government. Others still fell into the hands of Alberto Pinto, a Parisian photographer and interior designer of Jewish-Moroccan origin, who acquired them at Sotheby’s in 1999. Pinto would then sell the 20 vessels now being offered at Stair at another Christie’s auction in 2006.
“Wear consistent with age and use,” the company’s online listing notes of the condition of the pieces, dryly enough in view of their history. It notes that five of the beakers have chipped rims, repairs or hairline cracks. Four of the vases and covers have some chips in the rims or feet, a few of them large. “Otherwise in good condition,” said the house.
“Some trademarks of ‘cargo porcelain’ have a somewhat cloudy appearance and in some cases encrustations of marine life,” said Lauren Anderson, director of exposition sales at Stair, adding that the cargo was “very fashionable with interior designers” like Pinto. Throughout his life but especially after becoming wealthy and successful, Pinto was known as a passionate collector of antique tableware, acquiring cutlery, porcelain, and linen from both Europe and Asia. (His collection also includes furniture, statues, and a sizable survey of Impressionist paintings, including Édouard Vuillard’s 1921 Lucien Guitry.)
By Tim Brinkhof.

Farmer's March
Fandom: DC Comics
Ships: Jonathan Kent/Martha Kent
Ratings: T+
Warnings: Suicide Attempt; Angst; References to Farmer Suicides, Climate Crises, & Corporate Greed
Summary: The first lives Superman ever saved were his parents.
[Modern retelling of Superman's arrival and origin story.]
~~~
I've had this story in my head since reading about the recent uptick in farmer suicides in India. Digging into the archives, I found that the US still suffers the same plight as its fellow farmers in India and Bangladesh. So, I blended the different origin stories of the Kents, incorporated the plights of today's farmers, and highlighted the current climate crisis to give Clark a modern day retelling of his arrival on Earth. Thank you for reading, and would love to hear your thoughts.
Hunger Has Natural Causes, Right?
Despite the fact that the world produces 1.5 times as much food as is needed to feed the human population, starvation and famine are endemic to modern capitalism. 900 million people die from starvation each year, but there is no global shortage of land to grow food. The UN estimates that there is enough land to feed a world population of 14 billion people. But what is it being used for? As in the ‘developed’ North, large landowners control the vast majority of land. In 83 countries, 3% of farmers control 79% of farmland, much of it left unused in order to maintain profits. Big Food made over $7bn profit from the South in 1990, and probably far more through transfer payments. It uses its economic power to force down the prices of rice, coffee, sugar, cocoa and cotton. Average prices in 1989 were 20% down on those of 1980. This led to an increase in foreign debt for Southern countries, with consequent increased economic hardship for the poor majority (higher taxes, inflation, etc.). Brazil has an area of farmland the size of India left uncultivated while 20 million rural poor are landless; the richest 1% owns 15 times as much land as the poorest 56% of Brazilian farmers. In Guatemala, 2% of landowners own 66% of the land. In the Philippines agribusiness producing sugar, cotton and pineapples for export has pushed 12 million peasants into the lowland forests.
Drought in Africa is part of a millennia-long cycle that human societies adapted to. It is cash crop exploitation, the market economy and taxation that produce starvation, not drought. During the 1970s, when famines first began to be reported regularly, ships that brought relief supplies to the port of Dakar left carrying peanuts, cotton, vegetables, and meat. In Bangladesh, often cited as the model for the Malthusian argument, 90% of the land is worked by sharecroppers and labourers. Many starved after the 1974 floods, while hoarders held on to four million tons of rice. In the mid-80’s severe famines occurred in the Sahel countries of Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Senegal and Chad yet during the same period record harvests of cotton were exported to the industrial centres of the world.
Cash crops go to feed the global supermarket, yielding higher profits for international capital and accelerating global industrialisation. Mexican soil and labour supplies almost 70% of the US market for much winter and early spring vegetables. The result is that agriculture for local consumption is squeezed out and the prices of staple foods rise. Up to 50% of total meat production in Central America is exported, mainly to North America. The “Green Revolution” of the 1970s and 1980s, that the ruling class said would feed the hungry, has in fact only supplied the global supermarket. The same will certainly be true of the ‘wonder crops’ of the GM revolution. The corporate claims that GM and industrial food production in general will ‘feed the world’ are straightforward lies. The maize/soya/ animal product system they are pushing so heavily is not a rational way to produce food — an acre of cereal is estimated to produce 5 times as much protein as one devoted to meat production, an acre of legumes (beans, peas, lentils) 10 times as much and an acre of leafy vegetables 15 times as much.
Despite international sanctions, petrodollars continue to flow into Russia’s budget — primarily thanks to a “shadow fleet” that ships Russian oil to buyers willing to pay prices above the $60 per barrel cap imposed by the G7+ Coalition. As The Insider found, a central role in this arrangement belongs to Latvian citizen Aleksejs Haļavins, as two entities affiliated with the businessman are known to have purchased oil from Russian oil company Surgutneftegaz at a price above the cap, bringing the Russian corporation an additional $1.4 billion. Other companies linked with Haļavins operated tankers carrying oil from Russia to India and China. Notably, Israel has accused one of these tankers of supplying oil to Lebanon's Hezbollah and Iran's Quds Force. The Insider traced Haļavins’s connection to Russian national Mikhail Silantiev, the former head of Promsyrioimport — a state-owned company sanctioned on two counts: for supplying fuel to Crimea and for supplying oil to Syria.
The Wardian London Canary Wharf and Landmark Pinnacle London: A Comprehensive Guide to Two of London's Most Iconic Developments
Introduction Canary Wharf, one of London's most iconic skylines, is synonymous with modern living and towering architectural wonders. This district, once known as the hub of London's shipping industry, has transformed into a vibrant financial centre and a desirable residential area. Among the latest developments to grace this skyline are the wardian london canary wharf and Landmark Pinnacle. These two developments, while distinct in their own right, represent the pinnacle of luxury living in Canary Wharf.
The Evolution of Canary Wharf Historical Background Canary Wharf's transformation from a derelict docklands area to a thriving financial district is a story of regeneration and innovation. Originally part of the West India Docks, Canary Wharf was the centre of the British Empire's trade routes. However, by the mid-20th century, the area had fallen into decline, with the docks closing in 1980.
The Growth of Canary Wharf as a Financial Hub The 1980s saw the beginning of Canary Wharf's revival, driven by the government's urban regeneration programme. The construction of One Canada Square, once the tallest building in the UK, marked the area's transition into a financial powerhouse. Today, Canary Wharf is home to some of the world's leading banks, financial institutions, and multinational corporations.
Architectural Innovations in Canary Wharf The architectural landscape of Canary Wharf is a blend of modernity and innovation. With buildings like the Gherkin and the Shard setting the standard, developments like the Wardian London and Landmark Pinnacle continue to push the boundaries of design and functionality.
2. Wardian London – A Modern Oasis Introduction to Wardian London Wardian London is more than just a residential development; it is a concept inspired by the natural world. Named after the Wardian case, a 19th-century invention that revolutionised plant transportation, this development brings a slice of nature into the heart of the city.
Architectural Design and Inspiration The design of Wardian London is a testament to the fusion of nature and urban living. The twin towers, standing tall amidst the cityscape, are adorned with verdant balconies and sky gardens, creating a sanctuary in the sky.
The Concept of Urban Gardening Wardian London is at the forefront of the urban gardening movement, offering residents a unique blend of city living and nature.
five ukiyo-e ink brush drawings on paper
The ukiyo-e ("pictures of the floating world") genre of art flourished in Japan from the 17th through 19th centuries. Ukiyo-e artists produced woodblock prints and paintings depicting samurai, beautiful courtesans, kabuki actors, sumo wrestlers, history, folk tales, travel in romantic landscapes, flora, fauna and erotica. The Floating World, as the pleasure districts of Edo (modern day Tokyo) were called, describes the sensory pleasures of urban life, but also offers a bittersweet reminder of the fleeting nature of all worldly delights. Some of the greatest Japanese artists of the time—Ando Hiroshige, Katsushika Hokusai, Utagawa Toyokuni III, and Keisai Eisen among them—became known primarily as woodblock print designers in the ukiyo-e style. Their work had a profound impact on European artists around this time—its flattened perspective and innovative compositions inspired artists such as Mary Cassatt, Vincent Van Gogh, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, as well as the Japonisme movement in art and design.
Here are five original ink-brush drawings in the ukiyo-e style — a reinterpretation divergent from a simple pastiche in that the historical ukiyo-e images were never done in simple black and white.
Company Property
I've bee listening to this again thinking how perfectly it describes RDA and how it most likely works. And how it treats the people who we saw dying en masse working for it. Even of they only hire the worst I doubt they signed up to be slaughtered to finance RDA expansion.
The song is about a different hypercapitalist entiry abusing people but I suppose one evil space conglomerate is just like another. After all they are all in the race to the bottom line with the likes of the East India Company.
youtube
This is exactly how the RDA is getting people to come to Pandora and die defending corporate assets and revenue streams
Welcome to space. What were you expecting? It’s a dangerous place. Thank you for investing.
Monsters that can eat you in one bite and locals with arrows as long as you. I hope you enjoy being cannon fodder.
Just ten short years to a new frontier Snooze as you cruise and you’ll wake up here! You’ve been trapped in that ship for an awful long time So perhaps you have simply forgot what you signed
Wake up from cryo to be reminded that this isn't a job you can quit. Just think of the numbers of RDA soldier we saw dying in the A2 movie. Wonder if they knew what was waiting for them when they sign up.
Honestly? Did you not read the colony policy? That defines you as company property? That waivers your say in autonomy? The conglomerate’s got you in lock and key
You belong to the company now. I suppose this is especially true for Recoms. They never owned themselves. They wouldn't be able to afford to.
We put the dollar back into idolatry If you’re upset you can rent an apology We are a family forged in bureaucracy No I in ‘team’ but there’s con in ‘economy’
Con in economy. Dollar in idolatry.
Were you expecting adventure? Were you hoping for fun? My friend you’re indentured And pleasure’s exempt from your tenure
...
If you’d rather drop dead that’s fine But you know that dropping down dead bears a fine So you do your job, I’ll do mine I gotta meet a six foot deep bottom line
And not even death frees you from your debt. RDA even offers you the opportunity to work for it after death. If you're useful.
...
The secrets of the universe and all the worlds to be explored But our dreams are back on earth and now the work is our reward
Maybe you bought into the ideals of exploring other words and saving Earth?
And you’ll be grateful for seats at the table Though it dips at one end and the bench is unstable You may waste your days but at least you were able To pay off your grave since we leased you your cradle
But the company will never play fair. Please die at the end of your depreciation period. Thank you.
Be faithful and pray we’ll repay what you invest Behave as you slave for humanity’s interest On account that you’re all on account and we’re quickly amounting humanity’s interest
So they can get fair return on their investment. It's for humanity's interest (paid out to shareholders only)
In battleground Arizona, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. draws Biden and Trump voters (AP) Some voted for Donald Trump, others for Joe Biden. A few had never wanted anything to do with politics before they heard Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on a podcast or YouTube video. Lined up outside a Phoenix wedding hall tucked between a freeway, a railroad track and a U-Haul rental center, the hundreds of people who turned out Wednesday to hear Kennedy speak shared little in common ideologically. What united them was a deep-seated distrust of the media, of corporations and especially of the government and a belief that Kennedy is the only person in politics willing to tell them the truth. Voters are not enthusiastic about a Biden-Trump rematch, and alternatives like Kennedy or the No Labels third-party movement, which would typically be longshots, see an opening. Kennedy’s appearance in a 2024 battleground state highlights how he could influence the election in ways that are tough to predict. Allies of both Trump and Biden have expressed concerns that Kennedy’s independent bid could pull votes from their candidate in next year’s expected general election rematch.
Migrant caravan in southern Mexico marks Christmas Day by trudging onward (AP) Christmas Day meant the same as any other day for thousands of migrants walking through southern Mexico: more trudging under a hot sun. There were no presents, and Christmas Eve dinner was a sandwich, a bottle of water and a banana handed out by the Catholic church to some of the migrants in the town of Álvaro Obregón, in the southern state of Chiapas, which borders Guatemala. Migrants spent Christmas night sleeping on a scrap of cardboard or plastic stretched out under an awning or tent, or the bare ground. At around 6,000 people, the migrant caravan that set out Sunday was the largest one since June 2022, when a similarly sized group departed Tapachula.
Police in Peru dress up as Santa for festive drugs bust (The Independent) Police in Peru have been spotted carrying out a drugs raid while dressed as Santa Claus. The undercover agents caught two men allegedly selling cocaine and cannabis in a house in Huaral, just north of Lima. ‘Santa’ could be seen using a sledgehammer to break down the door of the house, before removing his beard to cuff one of the suspects.
Plane passengers held pending human trafficking inquiry leave France for India (Reuters) A plane carrying 276 Indian passengers took off on Monday for Mumbai, the French interior ministry’s local office said, after it was grounded for four days pending investigation into possible human trafficking. The flight, carried out by Romanian charter company Legend Airlines, had departed from Dubai and landed at the small Vatry airport on Thursday for a technical stopover when police intervened. Bound for Nicaragua, the flight arrived in France with 303 Indian passengers onboard. After being interrogated by police, two people investigated for human trafficking have been placed under “assisted witness” status while the investigation continues, according to the prosecutor’s office. Another 25 people, including five minors, have stayed in France where they wish to seek asylum, authorities said.
Russian naval ship in Crimea damaged in airstrike by Ukrainian forces, Russian Defense Ministry says (AP) A Russian naval ship in Crimea was damaged in an airstrike by Ukrainian forces, Russia’s Defense Ministry said Tuesday. The landing ship Novocherkassk was hit at a base in the city of Feodosia by plane-launched guided missiles, the ministry said, adding that two Ukrainian fighter jets were destroyed by anti-aircraft fire during the attack. Over the past several months, Ukrainian forces have conducted attacks around Crimea, mostly with sea drones.
China expects searing heat, more weather extremes in 2024 (Reuters) China grappling with one of its coldest Decembers on record will likely have to brace for another round of scorching heat and an increase in extreme weather next year due to the El Nino weather phenomenon, a senior climate expert said. This year has seen China lurch from some of its hottest temperatures logged since 1850 to a harsh cold snap that froze many parts of the country for close to a fortnight earlier this month. This past summer saw Beijing bake in record heat while a remote township in the country’s arid northwest logged a day of 52 degrees Celsius (126 Fahrenheit) the hottest on record for China. Typhoons also brought record-breaking rainfall in China’s north, causing widespread flooding.
Israel’s Economy Expected to Shrink 2% as War Sidelines Workers (NYT) The Israeli economy is expected to shrink by 2 percent this quarter, according to a leading research center, with hundreds of thousands of workers displaced by the war with Hamas or called up as reservists. About 20 percent of the Israeli work force was missing from the labor market in October, up from 3 percent before the fighting began, according to a report from the Taub Center for Social Policy Studies, a nonpartisan think tank in Israel. The spike in unemployment reflects the fact that about 900,000 people were called up to fight, stayed home to take care of children because schools had closed, evacuated from towns near the borders with Lebanon and Gaza or couldn’t work because of physical damage to their industries.
Lose a limb or risk death? Gaza’s wounded face hard choices (AP) The doctors gave Shaimaa Nabahin an impossible choice: lose your left leg or risk death. The 22-year-old had been hospitalized in Gaza for around a week, after her ankle was partially severed in an Israeli airstrike, when doctors told her she was suffering from blood poisoning. Nabahin chose to maximize her chances of survival, and agreed to have her leg amputated 15 centimeters (6 inches) below the knee. The decision upended life for the ambitious university student, as it has for untold others among the more than 54,500 war-wounded who faced similar gut-wrenching choices. Experts believe that in some cases, limbs could have been saved with proper treatment. But after weeks of Israel’s blistering air and ground offensive, only nine out of Gaza’s 36 hospitals are still operational. They are greatly overcrowded, offer limited treatment and lack basic equipment to perform surgeries. Many wounded are unable to reach the remaining hospitals, pinned down by Israeli bombardment and ground combat.
Saudis Keep Low Profile in Red Sea Conflict (NYT) After rebels took over the capital of Yemen in 2014, a 30-year-old Saudi prince named Mohammed bin Salman spearheaded a military intervention to rout them. With American assistance and weapons, Saudi pilots embarked on a bombing campaign called Operation Decisive Storm inside Yemen, the mountainous nation on their southern border. Officials expected to swiftly defeat the rebels, a ragtag tribal militia known as the Houthis. Instead, the prince’s forces spent years mired in a conflict that splintered into fighting between multiple armed groups, drained billions of dollars from Saudi Arabia’s coffers and helped plunge Yemen into one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. Hundreds of thousands of people died from violence, hunger and unchecked disease. Saudi Arabia and its main partner, the United Arab Emirates, eventually scaled back their military involvement, and Saudi officials entered peace talks with the Houthis, who secured control of northern Yemen. Now, the war in Gaza has thrust the Houthis whose ideology is driven by hostility toward the United States and Israel and support for the Palestinian cause into an unlikely global spotlight. Saudi Arabia, however, would rather watch these latest developments from the sidelines, with the prospect of peace on its southern border a more appealing goal than joining an effort to stop attacks that the Houthis say are directed at Israel a state the kingdom does not officially recognize and which is widely reviled by its people.
Attack in Nigeria (Foreign Policy) At least 160 people were killed and 300 people wounded in attacks on villages in central Nigeria, local officials said Monday. Monday Kassah, head of the local government in Bokkos, Plateau State, told the AFP that armed groups locally known as bandits launched attacks on at least 20 communities. Plateau State Gov. Caleb Mutfwang condemned the violence as “barbaric, brutal, and unjustified,” and governor’s office spokesperson Gyang Bere vowed to take proactive measures to protect civilians. However, Amnesty International criticized the government following the attacks, writing on X that “the Nigerian authorities have been failing to end frequent deadly attacks on rural communities of Plateau State.”
A Thriving Border Town Undercuts South Africa’s Anti-Immigrant Mood (NYT) By 7 a.m., lines of customers snake down the block outside stores on the main commercial strip in Musina, a bustling South African border town where thousands of people arrive daily from neighboring Zimbabwe to buy food, clothes and other necessities that are hard to get back home. A few miles away, at the border, pickup trucks bearing the seal of South Africa’s newly formed border patrol inspect the razor-wire fence, looking to arrest people who cross illegally braving bandits, crocodiles and the rushing Limpopo River. The border force represents an effort by the government, months ahead of crucial national elections, to respond to popular demand and clamp down on migrants sneaking into the country. Musina, surrounded by farms and a copper mine, is where the government’s muscular immigration policy collides with a tricky reality that many South Africans are loath to concede: that even people who cross the border illegally may be good for the country. Like politicians in the United States, Europe and elsewhere who score points by promising hardened borders and mass deportation, their South African counterparts are pitching a sweeping crackdown on foreigners to appeal to voters, playing on similar, often-unfounded fears that immigrants fuel crime and steal jobs.
Pope Francis blasts the weapons industry as he makes a Christmas appeal for peace in the world (AP) Pope Francis on Monday blasted the weapons industry and its “instruments of death” that fuel wars as he made a Christmas Day appeal for peace in the world and in particular between Israel and the Palestinians. Speaking from the loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica to the throngs of people below, Francis said he grieved the “abominable attack” of Hamas against southern Israel on Oct. 7 and called for the release of hostages. And he begged for an end to Israel’s military campaign in Gaza and the “appalling harvest of innocent civilians” as he called for humanitarian aid to reach those in need. Francis devoted his Christmas Day blessing to a call for peace in the world, noting that the biblical story of the birth of Christ in Bethlehem sent a message of peace. But he said that Bethlehem “is a place of sorrow and silence” this year. He took particular aim at the weapons industry, which he said was fueling the conflicts around the globe with scarcely anyone paying attention. “It should be talked about and written about, so as to bring to light the interests and the profits that move the puppet strings of war,” he said. “And how can we even speak of peace, when arms production, sales and trade are on the rise?” Francis has frequently blasted the weapons industry as “merchants of death” and has said that wars today, in Ukraine, in particular, are being used to try out new weapons or use up old stockpiles.
Russia is developing a new advanced aircraft carrier project
Russia's United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) has a project for an advanced aircraft carrier in progress, while transmitting its own position to the command of the Russian Navy, USC CEO Alexey Rakhmanov said in an interview published on the corporation's website.
Meanwhile, the CEO pointed out that the corporation has its own opinion on "what is a future aircraft carrier, how it should be built and with what technological specifications.
The Tass news agency reported that Rakhmanov also confirmed that the heavy aircraft cruiser Admiral Kuznetsov will be commissioned in 2024. According to the CEO, this specific request involves more than 2,000 people.
"This is a question for the Navy - whether or not an aircraft carrier should be built and what kind of aircraft carrier. This discussion comes from the time I worked at the company for 8 years. We are proactive in design and regularly transmit our position to the Navy. We have to know, and know precisely, what our enemy thinks and what he does. The repairs did not stop even for a single minute of the cruiser's time on the pier," said Alexey Rakhmanov.
Admiral Kuznetsov is an aircraft carrier (cruiser of heavy aircraft in the Russian classification) serving as the flagship of the Russian Navy. It was built by the Black Sea Shipyard, the only manufacturer of Soviet aircraft carriers, in Nikolayev, in the then Soviet Socialist Republic of Ukraine (SSR) and launched in 1985, becoming fully operational in the Russian Navy in 1995. It was originally commissioned in the Soviet Marine Union, and was designed to be the leading ship of the Admiral Kuznetsov class of two ships. The second hull was eventually sold by Ukraine to China, modified in Dalian and commissioned as Liaoning.
In June 2021, Vladimir Korolev, vice president of United Shipbuilding Corporation, announced that the review and update of Admiral Kuznetsov should be completed by the first half of 2023.
Admiral Kuznetsov continues to be revised and modernized.
The avionics, flight deck with ski jump, electrical equipment and the engine is expected to be replaced as part of this Kuznetsov upgrade process. The aircraft carrier would also receive a new all-national takeoff and landing control system, with the air power on board remaining the same.
How to Process Your First Export Order
The term export refers to the concept of a broad network of businesses in international trade. An exporter needs meticulous planning for the particular perishable good he/she is going to promote on the international market.
Processing of an export order is not simple. You can get a few orders at the start of your venture. If you are not getting regular orders, you will not be able to build brand recognition and earn the trust of the audience. The exporters must receive steady orders to handle the export process with the importers efficiently.
Let’s briefly explain the processing of an export order. The steps are listed below:
Receive the order
Generally, the processing of an export order begins with receiving the order. As per an export order, a formal agreement in the form of a document is signed between the exporter and importer before the exporter starts producing or sourcing the goods. An export order can be in the form of a pro forma invoice, purchase order, or letter of credit.
Confirmation of Order
After receiving an export order, the exporter should examine the terms of the contract. This stage plays a crucial role, as it depends solely on the exporter whether to confirm the order or not.
The export includes verification of the perishable product’s description, payment in terms of the shipping process, insurance coverage for the loss of goods during transit, releasing payment for documentation, and finally the negotiation of documents with the bank. After addressing all these necessary formalities, and if it meets expectations, the exporter confirms the order.
Obtaining a License
The Indian exporter needs to obtain an authorized license from the government of India after receiving an order from the importer. The exporter can submit an application to the Export Trade Control Authority to obtain a valid license.
Letter of Credit
The importer sends the letter of credit along with the export order, or the exporter can request the importer for the letter of credit.
Foreign Exchange Formalities
An Indian exporter must adhere to the foreign exchange rules under the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act (FERA). They need to submit a declaration stating that:
The foreign exchange earned by the exporter must be handled according to RBI rules and within the specified time.
Shipping documents and transactions should be conducted through authorized foreign exchange dealers.
Payment for transporting perishable goods must be collected using approved methods only.
6. Executing the Order
The exporter must make the proper arrangements to execute the export order.
Mark and pack the goods based on the importer’s specifications.
Obtain an inspection certificate from the Export Inspection Agency to make an arrangement for pre-shipment inspection.
Get an insurance policy from the Export Credit Guarantee Corporation (ECGC) for credit risk protection.
Get a marine insurance policy as needed.
Assign a forwarding agent (customs house agent) to handle customs and related matters.
7. Responsibilities of a Forwarding Agent
The forwarding agent needs to obtain a permit from the customs department to ship the goods.
The forwarding agent must give all the required details of the goods, including nature, quantity, and weight, to the shipping company.
A shipping bill or order is prepared by the agent.
The forwarding agent prepares two copies of the port challan and pays the dues.
The ship’s master is responsible for loading the perishable cargo onto the ship. The goods should be loaded on the ship in the presence of the customs officials, as mentioned on the shipping order.
Once the goods are loaded, a receipt is issued by the master of the ship.
8. Bill of Lading
When an Indian exporter hands over the receipt issued by the ship's master to the shipping company, they receive a Bill of Lading in return. The Bill of Lading is an official document that provides a detailed description of the perishable goods loaded onto the ship, including their type and quantity and the name of the port of destination.
9. Advice for the Shipment
Before dispatching the perishable shipment onto the ship, the exporter sends the shipment advice to the importer so that the latter is present at the port of unloading to receive the exported goods. Along with the advice note, the exporter sends a copy of the packing list, a non-negotiable copy of the bill of lading, and the commercial invoice.
10. List of Documents
The exporter sends a list of documents to the importer’s bank, which includes:
Commercial Invoice
Packing List
Certificate of Origin
Marine Insurance Policy
Letter of Credit
GR Form
Bill of Exchange
Bill of Lading
Bank Certification
11. The Acquisition of Export Revenue
The exporter must complete certain banking formalities to realize the proceeds from an export. These are usually initiated upon the submission of the bill of exchange. The exporter receives the payment in foreign exchange.
