Chinese Porcelains Recovered From Centuries-Old Shipwreck Head to Auction
The porcelain vessels spent over 300 years at the bottom of the South China Sea.
Trawling the seabed near the south coast of Vietnam in 1989, a Vietnamese fisherman stumbled upon the remains of the wreck of a ship that was traveling from China to Jakarta when it sunk some three centuries before. Among the haul, which included everyday items like bamboo combs, tweezers, and dice, were a whopping 48,288 pieces of Qing dynasty porcelain. In Jakarta, traders of the globe-spanning Dutch East India Company had planned to transport the vessels to Holland. Some 28,000 were sold at a 1992 Christie’s auction in Amsterdam, their likely planned destination, for a total of $7.3 million.
Now, on October 10, a group of 20 of these vases, with all their historic resonance, is being offered in an online auction at Stair Galleries, in Hudson, New York, which handles traditional furniture and fine art. Ranging between five to eight inches-high and displaying intricate floral patterns typical of traditional Chinese pottery, the group bears a very modest high estimate of $1,200.

The “Vung Tau Cargo,” so called for the Vietnamese coastal city of Vũng Tàu, near which it was discovered, has had a notable history since it was raised from its watery grave by the state-owned Vietnam Salvage Corporation in a joint venture with none other than the famed Swedish treasure hunter Sverker Hallstrom.
As for the porcelain booty that wasn’t auctioned off at Christie’s Amsterdam in 1992, some went to Hallstrom’s personal collection, other pieces to the Vietnamese government. Others still fell into the hands of Alberto Pinto, a Parisian photographer and interior designer of Jewish-Moroccan origin, who acquired them at Sotheby’s in 1999. Pinto would then sell the 20 vessels now being offered at Stair at another Christie’s auction in 2006.
“Wear consistent with age and use,” the company’s online listing notes of the condition of the pieces, dryly enough in view of their history. It notes that five of the beakers have chipped rims, repairs or hairline cracks. Four of the vases and covers have some chips in the rims or feet, a few of them large. “Otherwise in good condition,” said the house.
Tumblr media
“Some trademarks of ‘cargo porcelain’ have a somewhat cloudy appearance and in some cases encrustations of marine life,” said Lauren Anderson, director of exposition sales at Stair, adding that the cargo was “very fashionable with interior designers” like Pinto. Throughout his life but especially after becoming wealthy and successful, Pinto was known as a passionate collector of antique tableware, acquiring cutlery, porcelain, and linen from both Europe and Asia. (His collection also includes furniture, statues, and a sizable survey of Impressionist paintings, including Édouard Vuillard’s 1921 Lucien Guitry.)

On July 5, the 69 meter long, 1952 dwt cargo vessel An Phu 868 was lost off Vung Tau, Vietnam. The An Phu 868 sailed from An Giang enroute to Hai Phong and Phan Thiet when it struck a shoal.  The cargo vessel split-in-two and the cargo holds rapidly filled with water.  The crew sent out a distress call and abandoned ship into the vessel’s life raft.  Authorities alerted nearby vessels to assist in rescue efforts.  The cargo vessel Truong Hai Star 3 responded and rescued all 9 crew of the An Phu 868.  No reports of injuries.  Reports state that the vessel remains on the shoal and a salvage team plans to remove the 10 tons of bunker fuel off the An Phu 868.

Final review of the Vietnam War
All have come to an end, we have watched the last episode of the Vietnam War. The “real” face has been revealed, all behind those American promises have been answered. I never expect those dumb Americans were good at acting, they set up this fucking Communist drama, helping the South of Vietnam, and then leave. Who would have guessed the Americans were good at “playing games” on Vietnam.
Tumblr media
Episode Summary: Episode 10 was mostly talking about how the Americans retreat from Vietnam and stop providing aids and weapons to the S. Vietnam. March 29th, 1973 the last American troops left South Vietnam, less than 200 Marines would remain, assigned to guard consular offices in the American Embassy and other installations in Saigon. Thousands of other Americans including CIA agents diplomats and contractors stayed behind as well. Vietnamese people were set to the beginning again and fight for their own lives. A new agreement is being made to end the war and create peace that signed in Paris on January 27th. The South Vietnamese president named Nguyen Van Thieu insisted to hold every inch of the South Vietnam land without the support of the American troops. Meanwhile, the North Vietnamese had attacked Tay Ninh, trying to establish a capital of their own in the south. Hanoi installed surface-to-air missiles near Khe Sanh just below the DMZ.  Nixon had privately promised President Thieu that he would support with American air power if Saigon ever seemed seriously threatened. But in the end, all they abandon the South Vietnamese when all they provided only money that putting South Vietnamese people into danger. President Nixon resigned due to the Watergate issues, so the new president has been selected, President Gerald Ford. The equipment being provided by President Nixon cannot be used like aircraft that which there were no trained pilots or ground crews. Artillery and military vehicles for which there were no spare parts and the US Congress was in no mood to provide more. Fuel and bullets are running low, they can only fire 85 bullets per month. North Vietnamese troops now going strong with capturing the central highland of the South of Vietnam. Every city is being collapsed pretty quickly because of the lack of weapons and troops. 1975, North Vietnamese entered Da Nang (South Vietnam’s second largest city). On the same Beach where the US Marines had landed nearly 10 years earlier beginning America's combat. Involvement in Vietnam, 16,000 Arvind soldiers fought for space with 775,000 terrified civilians aboard an improvised fleet of freighters and fishing boats headed south for Cam Ranh Bay, Vung Tau, and Saigon. North Vietnamese were slowly destroying Nha Trang, Xuan Loc.. making their way to the main capital of South Vietnam, Saigon. Heard from this terrible news, the evacuation plan was put on the action. There are 4 plans: Sealift by cargo ships anchored in the port of Saigon, Air Lift by commercial airliner, military airlift and flights of helicopters to a flotilla of US Navy ships in the South, China Sea. South Vietnamese were rushing to those ships, plane, and helicopter to escape from Vietnam. Some success in escaping and some are being left behind.
Tumblr media
Final opinion: Firstly, I admire how much work Kens Burn has put on this video, I can’t believe any Vietnamese people memories that told me without seeing this footage. This film means a lot to me, my grandparents always told me that they suffer a lot during this tragic period of time in the Vietnam history. But I never feel the same way they did because I never saw it before. Me, living in this 21st century as a peaceful life makes me forgot how much the blood, sweat, and tears my grandparents had put out to fight for Vietnam. Kens Burn, himself is an amazing film producer, actually, he had made the world an awareness of not making this fucking stupid mistake again. From John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B.Johnson, Richard Nixon, and Gerald R.Ford, they are the stupidest person I ever knew. They all just a big liar bastard, they create this mess and look what they do, sit and wait for Vietnam to be destroyed. Behind those speeches and promises that they said, it just lies. Lies to themselves, U.S, and this beloved country, Vietnam. The biggest mistake that we’re making is WAR. I bet there are soldiers who wonder why they are holding gun back then, they are not savages, who loves killing people. It just those Communist, Democratic... and those shitty Party that was made by the president. Making us human killing each other, building tanks, airforces... to bombs other. What are they ever done any bad to you? They are not sinners, they not supposed to feel like that, being bombed, wounded, and suffered. So why don’t we use this Vietnam War as an example to get away and prevent it to happen again in the future? Let’s make the world a better place, a place where people can live happily.
- Peter

IMO Urged To Amend Fire Safety Regulations
What shipowners say and we are saying is that protection should take place on a degree playing field. It should not provide you with negative aspects in opposition while on an person level you work on protection measures, which fee cash of course." Germany's Federal Bureau of Maritime Casualty Investigation (BSU) said remaining month that misdeclared coconut charcoal turned into the maximum probably source of the blaze at the Yantian Express, which caught hearth in the Atlantic Ocean .
Tumblr media
While there have been no surprises in a document at the cause of ultimate year's Yantian Express hearth, it is able to be years earlier than the International Maritime Organization (IMO) amends onboard protection regulations, according to the International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI). "It addresses exactly what we country in our function paper and what we see all the time, and we see one incident after the subsequent," said IUMI Secretary-General Lars Lange.
Tumblr media
You additionally want more random inspections of cargo." Onboard firefighting measures must change as well, Lange stated. "We have those CO2 structures inside the holds house of expertise In many cases, and the Yantian Express turned into an example, that certainly does not paintings for cargo and boxes. The field contains the fire. CO2 does not reach the fire. And in that very moment while the metal of the field starts to melt, it's already that serious that you can't extinguish it with CO2," he stated.
Vessel hearth protection "wishes law and it needs a stage gambling field. Safety shouldn't be left to character business entities. Safety need to be treated at a regulatory degree, and that might imply in this case the IMO," Lange stated. "The IMO has complex procedures," he persisted, explaining that a maritime safety committee should comply with absorb onboard hearth safety measures in May. The matter most in all likelihood then might be cited a ship device and structures subcommittee, which isn't always slated to fulfill again until early 2021. A draft file would be handed amongst subcommittees for markup.
Tumblr media
SOLAS amendments have to be very, very well notion through because every vessel inside the international will right now have to comply with that." SOLAS stands for the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, which turned into amended in 2014 and implemented to ships constructed after January 2016 to increase the effectiveness of firefighting measures. The Yantian Express Fire Timeline The Yantian Express fireplace broke out in a box stowed on the deck of the German-flagged vessel while the ship become en direction to Halifax, Nova Scotia. The Hapag-Lloyd container ship started out its westbound voyage in Vung Tau, Vietnam, and berthed in Singapore and Sri Lanka earlier than sailing for Halifax.
Due to the firefighting operation and occasional mild rain, the hearth-protection clothing time and again have become saturated and needed to be changed. The firefighters cooled down quickly due to the fire safety training courses. The garments donned to shield in opposition to the cold were heavy and have become even heavier while wet. The group become therefore assigned to alternating shifts from then on.
Tumblr media
Furthermore, the water jet did not attain the third tier due to the sturdy wind. In addition, the deliver of compressed air became almost exhausted after a few 24 hours. Fighting the fire below such circumstances become deemed perilous by way of the grasp and the group turned into withdrawn for their protection." The group accrued in a convention room, wherein they were instructed of an approaching vessel, the mockingly named Happy Ranger .

Sea kidnappings rise in 2016 despite plummeting global piracy
More crew were kidnapped at sea in 2016 than in any of the previous 10 years, despite global piracy reaching its lowest levels since 1998, the ICC International Maritime Bureau’s (IMB) annual piracy report revealed today.
In its 2016 report, IMB recorded 191 incidents of piracy and armed robbery on the world’s seas. “The continued fall in piracy is good news, but certain shipping routes remain dangerous, and the escalation of crew kidnapping is a worrying trend in some emerging areas,” said Pottengal Mukundan, Director of IMB whose Piracy Reporting Centre (PRC) has monitored world piracy since 1991.
“The kidnappings in the Sulu Sea between East Malaysia and the Philippines are a particular concern,” he added.
Worldwide in 2016, 150 vessels were boarded, 12 vessels were fired upon, seven were hijacked, and 22 attacks were thwarted. The number of hostages fell to 151.
Maritime kidnappings, however, showed a threefold increase on 2015. Pirates kidnapped 62 people for ransom in 15 separate incidents in 2016. Just over half were captured off West Africa, while 28 were kidnapped from tugs, barges, fishing boats, and more recently merchant ships, around Malaysia and Indonesia.
IMB is urging governments to investigate and identify the kidnappers and punish them under law.
Mr Mukundan said ships should stay vigilant in high-risk areas. “Shipmasters should follow the latest best management practices and where possible take early action to avoid being boarded. They should inform the IMB PRC or regional counter piracy centres for help and advice,” he said.

Sulu Sea kidnappings
The kidnapping of crew from ocean going merchant vessels in the Sulu Sea and their transfer to the Southern Philippines represents a notable escalation in attacks. In the last quarter, 12 crew were kidnapped from two cargo vessels underway and an anchored fishing vessel, and in November a bulk carrier was fired upon but pirates were not able to board the vessel. Earlier in 2016, crewmembers were kidnapped in three attacks on vulnerable slow-moving tugs and barges.
IMB advises charterers and owners to consider avoiding the Sulu Sea by routing vessels West of Kalimantan.
Nigeria hotspot
The Gulf of Guinea remained a kidnap hotspot in 2016, with 34 crew taken in nine separate incidents. Three vessels were hijacked in the region. There was a noticeable increase in attacks reported off Nigeria: 36 incidents in 2016, up from 14 in 2015. These included nine of the 12 vessels fired upon worldwide in 2016. Some were almost 100 nautical miles from the coastline.
Meanwhile, Indonesian piracy incidents fell from 108 in 2015 to 49 in 2016. Although the overwhelming majority were low-level thefts, vessels were boarded in all but three of the incidents.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Somalia risk
IMB recorded two incidents off Somalia. Pirates attempted to attack a container vessel in the Gulf of Aden in May, and fired on a product tanker in the Somali basin some 300 nm from shore in October. For IMB, this latest incident demonstrates that the capacity and intent to attack merchant shipping still exists off Somalia.

Prominent Shipbuilders Austal & Incat Employs MAN Engines For Building Fast Ferry
An order has been placed by Prominent Australian shipbuilders, Austal and Incat Tasmania, with a total of eight MAN 16V28/33D STC engines in connection with the decision of the Government of the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago to build one fast ferry at each yard.
For providing high-speed passenger and vehicle operations on the seabridge between the islands of Trinidad and Tobago each vessel will be powered by 4 × MAN 16V28/33D STC units. Each engine will provide 7280 kW at full speed.
The Austal vessel will be of length 94 metres and designed to carry 926 passengers and 250 cars at speeds of 37.5 knots. The ship will be built in Austal’s new shipyard in Vung Tau, Vietnam.
Incat’s 100-metre wave-piercing catamaran will be a new fast passenger/cargo ferry with the capacity for 1,000 persons and will carry 239 cars or a combination of trucks and cars with a service speed of 39.5 knots. Incat will build the vessel at its shipyard in Tasmania, Australia.
Lex Nijsen, Head of Four-Stroke Marine Sales, MAN Energy Solutions said, “MAN Energy Solutions has long had very good working relations with both Incat and Austal. With these orders, we have further strengthened our position as the leading engine provider for large, high-speed ferries. The MAN 28/33D STC type is the market segment’s most fuel-efficient engine, a vital consideration when a vessel’s fuel bill can easily account for 90% of its operating costs.”
Thomas Huchatz, Sales Manager, MAN Energy Solutions, said: “The 28/33D STC has been selected for seven of the last 14 large high-speed-ferry projects since 2015. This makes it the best-selling engine type in this competitive market segment and shows the confidence that ship operators have in MAN Energy Solutions’ product portfolio and extensive service network.”
It has been further announced by MAN Energy Solutions that its after-sales division, MAN PrimeServ, will open a hub in Trinidad & Tobago to best support the operator.

Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Elsewhere…
Peru reported 11 incidents – 10 of them at the country’s main port of Callao – compared to zero in 2015. The number of incidents in Vung Tau, Vietnam dropped from 15 in 2015 to seven in 2016. Bangladesh also witnessed a welcome decrease, down from 11 in 2015 to three in 2016.
Tumblr media
global piracy
The IMB Piracy Reporting Centre is the world’s only independent 24-hour manned centre to receive reports of pirate attacks from around the world. IMB strongly urges all shipmasters and owners to report all actual, attempted and suspected piracy and armed robbery incidents to the IMB PRC. This first step in the response chain is vital to ensuring that adequate resources are allocated by authorities to tackle piracy. Transparent statistics from an independent, non-political, international organisation can act as a catalyst to achieve this goal.

IMO Urged To Amend Fire Safety Regulations
What shipowners say and we are saying is that protection should take place on a degree playing field. It should not provide you with negative aspects in opposition while on an person level you work on protection measures, which fee cash of course." "It addresses exactly what we country in our function paper and what we see all the time, and we see one incident after the subsequent," said IUMI Secretary-General Lars Lange.
Tumblr media
Vessel hearth protection "wishes law and it needs a stage gambling field. Safety shouldn't be left to character business entities. Safety need to be treated at a regulatory degree, and that might imply in this case the IMO," Lange stated. "The IMO has complex procedures," he persisted, explaining that a maritime safety committee should comply with absorb onboard hearth safety measures in May. The matter most in all likelihood then might be cited a ship device and structures subcommittee, which isn't always slated to fulfill again until early 2021. A draft file would be handed amongst subcommittees for markup.
Tumblr media
Due to the firefighting operation and occasional mild rain, the hearth-protection clothing time and again have become saturated and needed to be changed. The firefighters cooled down quickly due to the fire safety training courses. The garments donned to shield in opposition to the cold were heavy and have become even heavier while wet. The group become therefore assigned to alternating shifts from then on.
