La Réserve Eden au Lac Zurich Is Now Open
The latest hotel in La Réserve's celebrated portfolio is now welcoming guests to the banks of Lake Zurich. Joining properties in Paris, Ramatuelle and Geneva, La Réserve Eden au Lac Zurich is the result of an ambitious restoration of an old Zurich landmark; the Eden au Lac first opened in 1909. Designer Philippe Starck brought whimsy and flair to the project in imagining the five-star hotel as an “imaginary yacht club.” Nautical decor includes woodwork reminiscent of ship hulls, paintings of sailboats and portraits of captains, bronze rowlocks from Venetian gondolas, and oars. Starck conceived the 40 rooms and suites as mariner's cabins on land. There are eight different room categories, ranging in size from 237 to 850 square feet. From their balconies and terraces, the rooms offer views over both the water and the city, as do the bars and restaurants.
Eden Kitchen & Bar is designed as a convivial space with an open kitchen sending out international dishes reflecting Italian chef Marco Ortolan’s globetrotting career in restaurants around the world. On the rooftop, with panoramic 360-degree views over Zurich, La Muña offers Japanese-Peruvian specialties by chef Tomoko Gunji Hangartner. Good to know: You can order food all day—there is no afternoon kitchen closure—and likewise room service is 24/7. Take advantage of a special opening offer, “Discover La Réserve Zurich,” which, for a limited time, includes a slew of perks: Welcome drinks at the bar, American breakfast, a free upgrade to the next room category, early check-in and late check-out.

Delta to Retire Boeing 777s by Year-End
Delta has decided to retire its 18 Boeing 777s by the end of 2020, accelerating the airline’s strategy to simplify and modernize its fleet. “We’re making strategic, cost-effective changes to our fleet to respond to the impact of the COVID19 pandemic while also ensuring Delta is well-positioned for the recovery on the backside of the crisis,” said Gil West, Delta’s Chief Operating Officer. “The 777 has been a reliable part of Delta’s success since it joined the fleet in 1999 and because of its unique operating characteristics, opened new non-stop, ultra-long-haul markets that only it could fly at that time.”
Last month, Delta announced plans to accelerate the retirement of the MD-88 and MD-90 fleets to June. Since the onset of the COVID19 situation, Delta has parked more than 650 mainline and regional aircraft. The Boeing 777-200 first entered the fleet in 1999 and grew to 18 aircraft, including 10 of the long-range 777-200LR variant, which arrived in 2008. At the time, the aircraft was uniquely positioned to fly non-stop between Atlanta and Johannesburg, South Africa, Los Angeles to Sydney and other distant destinations. Delta will continue flying its fleet of Airbus A350-900s, which burn 21% less fuel per seat than the 777s they will replace. Despite a reduction in international passenger travel, the 777 fleet has been the workhorse of Delta’s cargo, mail and U.S. citizen repatriation operations amid the pandemic. Since late April, the widebody jet has flown dozens of trips from Chicago and Los Angeles to Frankfurt to deliver mail to U.S. military troops abroad; operated between the U.S. and Asia to deliver thousands of pounds of critical, life-saving supplies to aid in the COVID19 response; and carried thousands of U.S. citizens back to the U.S. from Sydney, Mumbai, Manila and other cities around the world. Asia Pacific Airlines Report 25% Decline in Net Earnings for 2019
Preliminary financial performance figures from AAPA show that Asia Pacific airlines recorded US$3.8 billion in combined net earnings in 2019, a 25% decline compared to the US$5.1 billion reported in 2018. Profitability was impacted by intense competition adding downward pressure on yields, whilst air cargo demand was significantly affected by the escalation of trade disputes, including tit-for-tat trade tariffs between the US and China. Overall, against the backdrop of a slowing global economy, Asia Pacific airlines saw international passenger traffic as measured in revenue passenger kilometres (RPK) moderate to a 4.2% increase in 2019, following a strong 7.2% growth in 2018. Meanwhile, international air cargo traffic as measured in freight tonne kilometres (FTK) declined by 5% for the year, marking the steepest fall since the global financial crisis.
Collectively, the region's carriers achieved aggregated operating revenues of US$210.5 billion for the calendar year, almost matching the US$211.2 billion recorded in 2018. Passenger revenue increased by 1.5% to US$167.1 billion, as regional economic expansion supported growth in both leisure and business travel markets, helping to offset the fall in passenger yields caused by persistently stiff market competition. Air cargo markets were adversely affected by a combination of lower demand and corresponding downward pressure on freight rates. As a result, cargo revenue fell significantly, by 14.5% to a combined total of US$18.4 billion in 2019, reversing the double-digit gains achieved in the preceding year. Asian airlines bore the brunt of the escalation in trade tensions, as they collectively account for over one-third of global air cargo traffic. Combined operating expenses totaled US$200.4 billion, unchanged from 2018. With global jet fuel prices down by 7.2% to an average of US$78.9 per barrel, fuel expenditure fell by 4.5% to US$52.8 billion. The share of fuel expenditure as a percentage of total operating costs declined by 1.3 percentage points to 26.4%. In contrast, non-fuel expenditure rose by 1.8% to US$147.6 billion, on the back of higher depreciation costs as well as landing fees and en-route charges. The decline in average fuel prices provided some relief to operating expenditure, but this was offset by higher non-fuel expenses. Consequently, overall operating profit declined by 7.4% to US$10.1 billion, whilst operating margin edged 0.4 percentage points lower to 4.8% for the year. Mr. Subhas Menon, Director General of the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA), said, "International passenger traffic on Asia Pacific airlines set new records in 2019, but the operating environment became increasingly challenging. The average profit was just US$4 per passenger flown, slimming net margin to a meagre 2%. Given the current crisis, it is sobering to look back on a time when we all took safe and affordable air travel for granted, and Asian airlines were carrying over four million passengers a day. Since the end of January 2020, that number has plunged dramatically as almost all countries introduced lockdowns and severe restrictions on international travel. Airlines have been forced to ground thousands of aircraft and are currently operating only skeletal networks to meet demand for repatriation flights as well as for shipments of medical supplies and essential goods." Looking ahead, Mr. Menon said, "Airlines worldwide are fighting for their very survival, given the collapse of demand. Hopes of a V-shaped recovery have waned. It may take years for the industry to recover to pre-COVID19 levels. Nevertheless, the early restart of aviation will spur global recovery from the current crisis. To this end, the Asia Pacific aviation community is committed to working closely with governments, public health authorities, and other international bodies in charting a course for a timely and measured restoration of air services." British Airways CEO Warns of Significant Changes Ahead
In a letter to British Airways staff on Tuesday, Alex Cruz, the airline's Chairman and CEO, warned of significant changes ahead. The global aviation body, IATA, has forecast that full year industry passenger revenues could plummet 55% compared to 2019, while traffic falls 48%. Many airlines have grounded all of their planes and more than a few are expected to go out of business. On Monday, British Airways flew just a handful of aircraft out of London Heathrow, compared to more than 300 on a normal day.
In the letter, Mr. Cruz, wrote, "Our very limited flying schedule means that revenues are not coming into our business. We are taking every possible action to conserve cash, which will help us to weather the storm in the short-term. We are working closely with partners and suppliers to discuss repayment terms; we are re-negotiating contracts where possible; and we are considering all the options for our current and future aircraft fleet. All of these actions alone are not enough. "In the last few weeks, the outlook for the aviation industry has worsened further and we must take action now. We are a strong, well-managed business that has faced into, and overcome, many crises in our hundred-year history. We must overcome this crisis ourselves, too. "There is no Government bailout standing by for BA and we cannot expect the taxpayer to offset salaries indefinitely. Any money we borrow now will only be short-term and will not address the longer-term challenges we will face. "We do not know when countries will reopen their borders or when the lockdowns will lift, and so we have to reimagine and reshape our airline and create a new future for our people, our customers and the destinations we serve. We have informed the Government and the Trade Unions of our proposals to consult over a number of changes, including possible reductions in headcount. We will begin a period of consultation, during which we will work with the Trade Unions to protect as many jobs as possible. Your views matter and we will listen to all practical proposals. "The scale of this challenge requires substantial change so we are in a competitive and resilient position, not just to address the immediate COVID19 pandemic, but also to withstand any longer-term reductions in customer demand, economic shocks or other events that could affect us. However challenging this is, the longer we delay difficult decisions, the fewer options will be open to us ... We must act decisively now to ensure that British Airways has a strong future and continues connecting Britain with the world, and the world with Britain." IAG, the airline's parent company, also owns Iberia and Aer Lingus. See latest Travel News, Interviews, Podcasts and other news regarding: COVID19. Read the full article

Air Canada to Operate Modified Dash 8-400 Aircraft for Cargo
Air Canada Cargo has signed an agreement with Jazz Aviation to operate the recently approved Dash 8-400 Simplified Package Freighter, developed by De Havilland Canada, on short and medium haul markets under the Air Canada Express banner. The reconfigured aircraft will carry a total of 17,960 lbs (8,147 kg) of cargo in the passenger cabin and belly. “The reconfiguration of Dash 8-400 aircraft into Simplified Package Freighters can be quickly achieved by the removal of seats and seat track covers in the passenger cabin,” said Todd Young, Chief Operating Officer, De Havilland Canada. “The reconfiguration, which includes the use of up to 17 nets will provide a potential total payload of up to 17,960 lb. and a total cargo volume of up to 1,150 cubic feet per aircraft.”
Under an agreement with De Havilland Canada, Jazz Aviation has ordered a Service Bulletin and conversion kit that will be applied to the first of 13 select Dash 8-400 aircraft. De Havilland Canada will be the exclusive supplier of all future Dash 8-400 aircraft Simplified Package Freighter modifications for Jazz's fleet. "This aircraft will allow us to provide critical cargo lift on short and medium-haul routes that have been impacted by the reduction of passenger flights," said Tim Strauss, Vice-President Air Canada Cargo. "The converted cabin, which can accommodate a cargo volume of 1,150 cubic feet is perfectly suited to loose load cargo like medical supplies, PPE and other goods needed to support the ongoing fight against COVID19." To promote the cargo-only flights, Air Canada Cargo has created five, segment-specific sales teams. Air Canada to Suspend Scheduled Flights to USA
Air Canada is to suspend scheduled flights to the U.S.A. after 26 April 2020. The decision follows an agreement between the two governments to extend border restrictions by an additional 30 days, effective 21 April 2020. The airline plans to resume service to the U.S.A. on 22 May, subject to any further government restrictions beyond that date.
The airline is waiving change fees for affected customers with bookings during this period to enable them to reschedule their travel with no additional fee. Since 16 March, Air Canada has reduced its schedule by more than 90 per cent as a result of COVID19. Following the initial announcement of U.S.A.-Canada travel restrictions on 21 March, Air Canada maintained limited service to 11 U.S.A, destinations from its three Canadian hubs, primarily to facilitate the repatriation of Canadians. The last scheduled commercial flight from the U.S.A. to Canada will be on 26 April. See latest Travel News, Interviews, Podcasts and other news regarding: Air Canada, Canada, USA. Airlines Around the World Struggling to Survive
IATA has called for governments to work with the industry on confidence-boosting measures in the face of an anticipated slow recovery in demand for air travel. “Passenger confidence will suffer a double whammy even after the pandemic is contained—hit by personal economic concerns in the face of a looming recession on top of lingering concerns about the safety of travel. Governments and industry must be quick and coordinated with confidence-boosting measures,” said Alexandre de Juniac, IATA’s Director General and CEO. An IATA-commissioned survey of recent travelers found that: - 60% anticipate a return to travel within one to two months of containment of the COVID19 pandemic but 40% indicate that they could wait six months or more; and
- 69% indicated that they could delay a return to travel until their personal financial situation stabilizes. Early indications of this cautious return-to-travel behavior are seen in the domestic markets of China and Australia, where new coronavirus infection rates have fallen to very low levels: China: Domestic demand began to recover when the rate of new COVID19 infections in China fell into single digits and rapidly headed towards zero (measured by new infections as a percentage of the seven-day moving average of total COVID19 cases). While there was an early upswing from mid-February into the first week of March, the number of domestic flights plateaued at just over 40% of pre-COVID19 levels. Actual demand is expected to be significantly weaker as load factors on these flights are reported to be low. China accounts for some 24% of all domestic passengers. Australia: Domestic demand continued to deteriorate even after the rate of new infections fell into single digits which triggered an initial recovery in the Chinese domestic market. In fact, there is still no sign of a recovery (total domestic flights are at 10% of pre- COVID19 levels) even as new infections nears zero. Australia accounts for 3% of all domestic travelers. Domestic market behavior is a critical indicator as the post-pandemic recovery is expected to be led by domestic travel, followed by regional and then intercontinental as governments progressively remove restrictions. “In some economies, the spread of COVID19 has slowed to the point where governments are planning to lift the most severe elements of social distancing restrictions. But an immediate rebound from the catastrophic fall in passenger demand appears unlikely. People still want to travel. But they are telling us that they want clarity on the economic situation and will likely wait for at least a few months after any ‘all clear’ before returning to the skies. As countries lift restrictions, confidence boosting measures will be critical to re-start travel and stimulate economies,” said de Juniac. This week IATA is conducting regional summits with governments and industry partners to begin planning for an eventual re-start of the air transport industry. “The passenger business came to a halt with unilateral government actions to stop the spread of the virus. The industry re-start, however, must be built with trust and collaboration. And it must be guided by the best science we have available. Time is of the essence. We must start building a framework for a global approach that will give people the confidence that they need to travel once again. And, of course, this will need to be shored-up by economic stimulus measures to combat the impact of a recession,” said de Juniac. Relief Measures In addition to confidence-building and stimulus measures, the anticipated slow recovery also adds urgency to the need for emergency financial relief measures. IATA estimates that some 25 million jobs in aviation and its related value-chains, including the tourism sector, are at risk in the current crisis. Passenger revenues are expected to be $314 billion below 2019 (-55%) and airlines will burn through about $61 billion in liquidity in the second quarter alone as demand plummets by 80% or more. Some governments have stepped up. Examples of recent relief measures include: - Colombia added significant tax relief for airline tickets, jet fuel and tourism to their already comprehensive package of relief measures; - Hong Kong provided another HK$2 billion in relief, including purchasing 500,000 tickets in advance from Hong Kong-based carriers to inject liquidity into the airlines; - Senegal announced US$128 million in relief for the tourism and air transport sector; - Seychelles has waived all landing and parking fees for April to December 2020; - The 41 Eurocontrol states and their air navigation service providers (ANSPs) delayed EUR1.1 billion in air navigation service charges for February-May until November and through to 2021. Last week a further 13 states and ANSPs also delayed terminal charges, totaling over EUR190 million, for a similar period. “This is an emergency. Airlines around the world are struggling to survive. Virgin Australia which entered voluntary administration demonstrates that this risk is not theoretical. Governments will need financially viable airlines to lead the economic recovery. Many of them won’t be around to do that if they have run out of cash. The number of governments recognizing that relief measures are needed is growing. But the crisis is also deepening. We thank the governments that have committed to provide the industry a lifeline and look forward to quick implementation. For the others, each day matters. Millions of jobs are at stake and relief cannot come fast enough,” said de Juniac. See latest Travel News, Interviews, Podcasts and other news regarding: IATA. Read the full article

Airbus Achieves Fully Automatic Refuelling Contacts
Airbus has achieved the first ever fully automatic air-to-air refuelling (A3R) operation with a boom system. The flight test campaign, conducted earlier in the year over the Atlantic Ocean, involved an Airbus tanker test aircraft equipped with the Airbus A3R solution, with an F-16 fighter aircraft of the Portuguese Air Force acting as a receiver. This milestone is part of the industrialisation phase of A3R systems ahead of its implementation in the A330 MRTT tanker development. The campaign achieved a total of 45 flight test hours and 120 dry contacts with the A3R system, covering the whole aerial refuelling envelope.
The certification phase will start in 2021. Didier Plantecoste, Airbus Head of Tanker and Derivatives Programmes, said, “The achievement of this key milestone for the A3R programme highlights the A330 MRTT’s excellent capability roadmap development and once more confirms that our tanker is the world’s reference for present and future refuelling operations. Our special thanks go to the Portuguese Air Force for their continued support and help on this crucial development.” The A3R system requires no additional equipment on the receiver aircraft and is intended to reduce air refuelling operator (ARO) workload, improve safety and optimise the rate of air-to-air refuelling transfer in operational conditions. Once the system is activated by the ARO, the A3R flies the boom automatically and keeps the alignment between the boom tip and the receiver receptacle with an accuracy of a couple of centimeters; the proper alignment and the receiver stability is checked in real-time to keep a safe distance between the boom and the receiver and also to determine the optimum moment to extend the telescopic beam to achieve the connection with the receiver. At this point, the fuel transfer is initiated to fill up the receiver aircraft and once completed and the disconnection is commanded, the boom is cleared away from the receiver by retracting the telescopic beam and flying the boom away to keep a safe separation distance. During this process, the ARO simply monitors the operation. The goal for the A3R system is to develop technologies that will reach fully autonomous capabilities. Crown Group, a leading Australian residential developer, has taken the next steps in its first move into the US market, where it plans to develop a mixed-use high-rise condominium and hotel tower in Los Angeles’ burgeoning Downtown district. The company is progressing entitlements with Los Angeles City Hall for the proposed tower, which is earmarked for the southeast corner of South Hill and 11th streets at the convergence of Downtown’s financial, fashion and South Park districts. Crown Group has formed a joint venture with a Singapore based company called Magnus Property Pte Ltd and one of Indonesia’s biggest property developers, ASRI. The joint venture group settled on the Downtown site in November 2019.
The 43-storey tower has been designed by Koichi Takada Architects and is expected to be completed in 2024. “It is our desire, through a nature-inspired approach to architecture, to transform an old warehouse district into a living breathing neighbourhood in LA,” Mr Takada said. “We want to humanize tall buildings, to celebrate the pedestrian activities and consider how people experience it. We want our tall building designs to be more engaging for the public, and to contribute to the community by activating and creating a connection with the neighbourhood.” The high-rise sections of the building will comprise 319 condominiums with an exclusive residents’ retreat over the top two floors. Crown Group’s LA office is also in discussions with several luxury hotel brands to incorporate a 160-key hotel in the low rise of the building. Korean Air Providing Protective Gowns and Goggles to Cabin Crew
Wed, 22 April 2020 This week, Korean Air started providing protective gowns and goggles to all cabin crew members.
Korean Air’s cabin crews on all flights will now wear goggles in addition to masks and gloves, while protective gowns are being provided on medium and long-haul inbound flights as overseas COVID19 cases continue to increase significantly. All protective gowns, masks and gloves are discarded after the flight and personal goggles are sanitized before reuse. Korean Air describes the safety gear as "light and easy to wear".
