A Hero in a City Full of Giants
So I just got positive on my covid test and have nothing better to do. I figured I might as well get started on the Don Quixote analysis of each of her IDs.
Please note that I am not infallible, and can very well get things wrong. Additionally, I might not do it all at once. It's kind of a lot.
I will also not be going over T Corp and Cinq Association in too much detail here, as I have already covered them in earlier posts.
For now, I'll discuss Shi Association and Blade Lineage. They're both pretty clear cut, so they're unsurprisingly the most brief explanations.
With that sorted, let's begin.
To start, it's important to remember the setting of Limbus Company. To summarise a lot, and I mean a lot, The City is a hyper-capitalist dystopia, one in which the best way to survive is to look out for yourself first and foremost. It is a place where in order to get anything meaningful done, one must be strong. The systems in each wing exist to benefit the rich and powerful, while exploiting the people beneath them.
Altruism is an endangered concept with The City. In a place where you have to give everything you have to merely survive, the ability to help someone else for no benefit to yourself is a luxury. Any who try will, assuming they aren't killed first, inevitably discover the futility of their actions.
Suffice it to say, heroes don't last long.
And yet, Don Quixote is still here. Still trying, despite everything that has impeded her path. Throughout the story, we have seen her time and time again going out of her way to help the weak and downtrodden, to varying degrees of success. And, while she might not be an actual hero - at least, not yet - her identities provide an interesting perspective on her motivations.
With every ID of hers we've received, we have seen a Don who, in one way or another, failed in her journey towards Heroism.
I'll start with Shi Association. They're assassins whose lethality also extends to themselves. They tend to excel when they're on the brink of death, which means that any mission they're in is likely to get very, very bloody. In Don's case, the ID story shows us that, while she acts jolly and upbeat around her colleagues, she is a deeply traumatised woman by this point.
Her ID art should tell you exactly how heroic she feels at this point. Shi Association Don is no hero, only a weapon that is on the brink of breaking.
Moving on...
Blade Lineage Don is an brief one. Don seems relatively sane compared to a number of her other IDs, even more so than LCB Don, but it is explicitly stated within her ID story that she has long since given up her quest for heroism.
Pretty straightforward, honestly. Don has lost the will to fight for others, instead deciding to act in her own best interests. In the context of The City, this would be considered a good ending for her. She's alive, still has her sanity, and is a part of a syndicate that has an above average level of morality. Not that being above average means anything, really...
So that's those two IDs done. I'll try to get the next few done by tuesday, but I can't guarantee that. If you've read all the way to here, first of all, thank you very much, but second of all...
Should I include Don's Lobotomy Corp ID? It feels a bit like an outlier, but I expect I could probably find something to talk about with it.

I present anyone who somehow wanders upon this page with a crackship dear to my heart : Shi section 5 polycule, inspired by above picture (https://twitter.com/ML511049/status/1662766799681884161/photo/1) Think about it, they already have dynamic of caring deeply about each other, with already romantic tension implied between shishmael and shicliff, why not just push it a *little* further? Especially considering that it seems like shi-Don is the most mature ID of Don making her actually emotionally capable of being in a healthy relationship!

Don and her Identities
So there's a lot of theories and whatnot rolling around about what the reveal means, what it means for Don's character, and what it can mean for the future. But I'd like to take a lens back and see how it changes something fundamental to Don, because every sinner has identities, but none of them are as...drastically affected by what their Canto reveals as Don.
Spoilers under Cut
From here on out I'm referring to "Don Quixote?" as Bloodon for short. Also read @thelordofhats post about Murder on the W Express as I think they have a lot of good thoughts about Bloodon and the event in general.
Bloodon is present in the mirror worlds. We know that from Don having Rocinante in every one of them, including more armored groups like Hammer Und Nagel and T Corp. Wouldn't make sense for her to keep them otherwise. However Bloodon doesn't seem to change a lot about how we view the identities, but I'd like to posit that she makes a world of a difference in understanding Don's position in the world and why she is where she is in mirror worlds. Because there's something VERY specific that seems to clash ALL OTHER MIRROR WORLD DONS from LIMBUS DON. Rule following. In almost every other identity, Don is seen following the rules of some wing or finger or even the head itself as a general fixer. The most notable thing to point to is she isn't a part of the group most against rules, the TLA, unlike fellow problem children Ishy and Heath. We never see a "Kurokumo Hong Lu" situation where she's called out for bending or breaking the rules of those she works under. This is all despite her constantly doing it under Limbus Company (at least until Vergilius tells her to back off) Why is this? I believe it has to do with Bloodon's priorities when it comes to the Don we know and love.
First and foremost, keep her alive.
We've yet to see a sinner's backstory specifically call out Dante like this. Almost as if Dante was part of the contract for Don Quixote. It wouldn't make sense for her to say they were promised. Why Dante was part of the contract is important is up to interpretation. It's possible there's something more, that Bloodon is more aware of the stars like Demian, she wants Don to completely override her, or she is simply scared of death. Either way, she needs to live for long enough to see some change for herself and Don. Thus, she needs both of them alive, hence her primary goal being that.
Secondly, she wants happiness. Lust isn't her base ego's affinity for now reason. It's likely a core part of both Don and Bloodon. If Bloodon is miserable, then it's likely she wants to help herself out of that pit somehow. Likely by making her other self happy in ANY way.
We can see this manifest throughout the mirror worlds and how Bloodon is trying across them. In each world, Don has something she can say she is happy about. Let's go over a few key ones and the way the two rules interact.
W Don! Everyone's favorite depressed and OP don. Bloodon likely setup Don's role in W Corp because of her love of the Warp Trains and the company itself. It seems like a slam dunk. Secure meal everyday, safety being a employee of a wing, and Don is happy! But when Don learns the truth, she becomes far less happy about her position. However, leaving her job is extraordinarily dangerous, if not lethal outright. To leave her Wing means death for a mere fraction of a chance of finding more happiness. Aside from her second uptie chat, she is also quite happy in all of her voicelines, and we don't really get to see how she evolves and adapts to the reality of her otherwise comfy job. It's a bit rough, but Bloodon has to keep her alive, and being a W employee is a pretty safe gig (up until something goes wrong :)
The above mentality also applies well with T Corp and Shi. While Shi is a bit less safe, she's still a director of a numbered Fixer association. She's still fairly comfy, and most of her angst comes from her subordinates suffering and having to take the lives of random individuals (something she also suffers with in T Corp).
As for ones where everything aligns, we have plenty of examples of that. Middle, Lantern, and N Corp Don all are examples of Don being perfectly happy regardless of the morality or duties her job entails, as long as it's presented to her fantasies well. However, all of them still have her following some kind of rules, whether it be the Middle's or the Corps. It's very possible a Don without a leash in the form of Bloodon informing things could very easily fuck it up, and even if Don gets her dream job as a Cing director, she still can't save everyone she wants.
All of these identities illustrate the point that Don can't have it all. Risking her life for civilians means putting her neck on the line, and it's something Bloodon in the mirror worlds isn't setting up for her.
However, it's something Limbus Company can help her with. She can achieve her dreams of being a genuine hero in Limbus Company, because Limbus Company has solved many a problem for many a person. They've saved countless lives from the Time Ripper, helped resolve the distortion that is Papa Bongy, and slain the Pallid Whale. She can be the hero she dreams of...as long as she has enough power.
Consistently, Don has been shown that she can't make it in time or have enough power to save those she wants. We see it most prominently in her desire to save Pilot's crew, where the very laws of the ocean dictate that she did not make it in time. We also see it far more clearly the 'lacking' power in the Warp express.
She so badly WANTS to fix things. She's willing to sacrifice a thousand times over to make sure villains die and the innocent survive. But in this instance, and many others, she can't.
But someone else did. Bloodon was able to salvage the situation Don couldn't. And that's what I think Canto VII will be about.
The fact that, in order for Don to be consistently happy, she needs help to fight the fights she doesn't have a hope of winning. The fact that, in order for Don to build her future, Bloodon has to face the fears that her powers are a part of them both. Afterall, who ate that Warp employee hiding in the secret compartment?
#limbus company#don quixote (lcb)#don quixote#analysis#character analysis#murder on the warp express#limbus spoilers#holy fuck this was a long post but honestly don is my hyperfixation and doing this gave me a deeper appreciation for her#she tries so hard#all she needs is that extra oomph from being a heavy hitter in the pmoonverse

moving observation threads from twitter to here because site's on fire now lmao.
i think its interesting that don quixote’s current ids are all two sides of an extreme that comes from her current incarnation’s middle ground of deluded, but not mad, yet still deaf to the reality of the city and its fixers.
disclaimer that i haven't finished don quixote yet, i'm still partway through reading, but i have seen and listened to summaries.
first, w corp and shi association
this is the don quixote that has been swung too far and too hard into reality that it breaks her (admittedly, one much harder than the other, but still). much like throwing a child into a whirlpool to teach them how to swim, don quixote is plunged deep headfirst into the innate cruelty and suffering that the city runs on.
w corp don shows us the moment where she breaks. (a note, the way the narrator reads here is quite perfect for the city, no? the truth behind the carriages is something to be abhorred and disgusted by, but because this is the nightmare hypercapitalist hellscape that is the city, it is merely something to take disgust at once and learn to deal with it.)
shi association don quixote is the one that's already far, far too deep in the hole to ever go back to her old self. just took several baseball bat hits to her psyche for years and years. of course, how could this not happen? it takes a maniac to think that assassinating people on the whims of whoever pays you no questions asked is how an idealized hero of justice should act.
she can still act like her usual, jovial self, cracking jokes and being happy, but this mask is much thinner, and is such; just a mask hiding her true, broken self. she cannot unsee what has been seen, and her ideals have to contend with the reality that she is seeing. she can try to abide by those once lofty, knightly ideals, but in these ids, the city will crush it over and over again.
(hey fun fact i did this study/observation because i noticed that w corp don quixote's out of combat passive is called "broken spirit". for a long time i assumed it was n sinclair's until i looked closer lmao)
and now we have n corp don quixote!
this is the delusion cranked to an absolute maximum, uncaring, unhearing, unseeing of everything but whatever justice she deems fit. there is no person more terrifying than one who commits atrocities fully believing that they are in the right.
how don quixote could even end up like this, i think is quite possible. i would think that for someone who idealizes justice, just the right words, the right kind of manipulation can easily sway her into nagel und hammer's fold. i certainly find it a likelihood that the one who grips faust could just go "heyyyy we're good guys trust us we're the true justice :)" but like you know with more tact and manipulation and don quixote would probably fall very hard into that.
ironically, by falling, she betrays the ideals that once guided her, but being fed nagel und hammer's doctrine like this, i imagine that she still wholly believes that this is justice, this is the ideal, not noticing that what she once was is dug so far and deep into her delusion that it is not even by her own will that she walks, it is now the one who shall grip faust that will tell her call her to heel or run or attack.
for a bit of fun symbolism, in the story for nagel und hammer donqui, she still wears rocinante (her sweet sneaks bro!!!) under her armour.
if don quixote states as such, that they are comrades that bring justice together, then she has failed. that justice is long gone and buried under doctrine, and the final remnant of that justice, rocinante, has been covered up in the armour of an inquisitor, never to tread the earth nor see that ideal justice enacted ever again.
with all this, i conclude that i think that what don quixote's story will be about is the balance of seeing reality in front of her for what it is, learning how to accept this and yet still stand strong and sturdy despite it, holding onto those hopeful ideals that guided her so far and continues to guide her without straying from her path.
i think she shall grow into someone who the city can harm her as much as it likes, but no matter what, she will not bow nor break.

I’m sure someone else has arrived at this conclusion first because Limbus Company stuff had been floating around for a while and there was plenty of time to think of it before the game even came out but it’s kinda blowing my mind so here
Each of the Associations in The City are named after a number, each in a different language. #1, Hana, is in Korean; #2, Zwei, is in German; etc.
It just occurred to me that they correspond directly to the order of the Limbus Company sinners.
1, Hana: Korean (Yi Sang) 2, Zwei: German (Faust) 3, Tres: Spanish (Don Quixote) 4, Shi: Japanese (Ryōshū) 5, Cinq: French (Meursault) 6, Liu: Chinese (Hong Lu) 7, Seven: English (Heathcliff) 11, Öufi: Swiss German (Sinclair)
This is absolutely not a coincidence and I wouldn’t be surprised if the remaining associations were named the same way but what does it mean??? What does it-

They specialize in information gathering, and if you pay extra, they'll also hunt down whoever you wanted to know about.
8: Eight? (Speculation based on the languages of the sinners and their numbers corresponding to the languages of the fixer associations, other instances of speculation will be marked with a ?)
nothing is currently known
9: Devyat Association
EDIT: Credit to truboo42, i'm bad at remembering limbus tidbits lol Specialties: Delivery Devyat employs courier fixers to deliver packages around The City, it is assuredly a dangerous job requiring skilled work.
10: Dieci Association
Language: Italian Specialties: Research, accumulation of knowledge Uniform: Priestly robes with a yellow sash Equipment: Gloves that somehow grant power the more knowledge the wearer has (Dieci Association South Section 4 Rodion) Known Fixers: Rodion (Limbus Company, World of the Dieci Association) Not much to go off of yet, but it seems like the Dieci specialize in accumulating knowledge, and are somehow able to use that knowledge for power. (curious why they never went to The Library, who also claimed to accumulate knowledge. perhaps they didn't want the library to have any of their knowledge?)
11: Öufi Association
Language: Swiss German Specialties: Trades and Deals Edit: thank you project moon very cool Uniform: Purple and black outfits similar in style to that worn by the Landsknecht of 15th century Germany Equipment: Ornate Halberd (Öufi Association South Section 3 Heathcliff) Known Fixers: Heathcliff (Limbus Company, World of the Öufi Association) Not much to go off of yet, but the Öufi seem to specialize in contracts and the enforcement thereof.
12: Dodeka?
nothing is currently known
And that's all, hopefully we'll gain more info later on the associations we haven't seen yet, expect future posts covering the Wings of the World and the Backstreets Syndicates!

A Hero in a City Full of Giants, Part 2
Alright, I've done Shi Association and Blade Lineage, now it's time for Lobotomy Corp and W Corp! These two will probably be relatively brief (they were not), but if you know the context, it won't come as a surprise.
After this will be Don's Middle and N Corp IDs!
Oh, Lobotomy Corp Don. You silly thing, you. I will say, on a completely unrelated note, it's cool to see how abnormalities look without the cognition filter active.
The Walpurgis night IDs feel slightly less "canon" than the others, to me, although that's more of an opinion thing. I'd be happy to explain why if asked.
Anyway, the fact that Don received a Lobotomy Corporation ID instead of one of the Library of Ruina ones is interesting here, as we know this specifically is the Lob Corp facility we play through in the game. So, we get the benefit of knowing a bit more context toward her working situation, although to be perfectly honest, the only thing that actually matters is the knowledge of her assigned abnormality, O-04-84, or Meat Lantern.
For those who don't know, Meat Lantern can be a rather frustrating abnormality to work with. First of all, it doesn't like if a work session with it ends too early, and is a fairly common escapee when shit hits the fan. Now, if it were any other abnormality this would be fairly manageable, it's just a matter of suppressing it and that's that, but Meat Lantern is a special case.
Firstly, you will not be notified that Meat Lantern has breached containment. Secondly, once you do realise, you will notice that it isn't roaming the facility. Instead, it has teleported somewhere in the facility and is waiting with its lantern sprouted out of the ground like a flower. If someone walks over the flower, they are killed instantly. You will need to find it before it kills too many people, or, worse, kills one of your important agents. It is a deceptively lethal abno with the right circumstances.
So why did I take the time to explain all of this? Well, if you were someone who, for example, aspired to be a hero that helped the weak and were given the responsibility of dealing with an abnormality that when left to its own devices can kill dozens of employees without being noticed, you would probably place a lot of importance on making sure it didn't do exactly that.
Lob Corp Don has a different way of seeing things, comparing it more akin to a game of Hide and Seek and punishing it for the "mischief" of killing multiple people by smacking its backside before placing it back in containment.
While, Don has always been an oddball case, this feels... strange to me. The most likely cause of this in my eyes is the armour she's wearing. As we have been shown through a number of different stories in Project Moon's catalogue, wearing E.G.O is not without its side-effects upon one's psyche. Obviously there is also the working conditions, as multiple instances within Lob Corp show that the body count is very high in that place (Lookin at you, Queen of Hatred). The way that it appears to have affected Don's mind is that she appears to have a great deal of affection towards the abnormalities, calling Meat Lantern (which outright eats people) cute and struggling to punish it for, again, eating people.
Suffice it to say, Lobotomy Corporation Don Quixote is no hero, although she has a commendable work ethic at least.
W Corp Don is a prime example of the speed at which The City can and will bring Don to ruin.
If you know how WARP trains work, you know why I don't need to explain much here. If you don't...
WARP trains are a form of near-instantaneous public transit, which is all well and good until you remember how time works when moving at or close to the speed of light. If you are not in first class seating, you will discover a few things.
Firstly, the train does not, in fact reach its destination instantly. Initially, people on the train may think this is the result of some sort of breakdown, and that, once the train is fixed, they will be able to get out at their desired stop soon.
Secondly, you do not need to eat or drink while on the train. This is not immediately apparent to the passengers, but when minutes becomes hours and the train still hasn't reached its destination, this will eventually be noticeable.
Eventually, hours will become days, weeks, then months. People will begin to panic, some may become violent, and if you are unlucky enough to see someone go past the point of no return, you will learn the final, terrible truth of WARP trains.
You cannot die within a WARP train. No matter what happens to you, you will still be conscious. You are forced to experience the full journey, even after a hundred years and you've watched countless people, who were once strangers, but have become life-long friends in the countless years since. Even after three thousand years, when you have long since forgotten your name, language, and what you were when you got onto the train. You will live through it all.
At your destination, a functionally identical reconstruction of you will leave the train at its destination, completely unaware of the eternity they experienced behind them.
This one does not need much explanation, although I will happily point out one very interesting detail about the ID story.
W Corp Don's ID story does not show her Uptie 3 art at all. All we see after her initial ID art is a black screen as it describes that Don's reaction of disgust and horror is the same reaction anyone has upon learning the truth of the trains.
Instead, the Uptie 3 art gives us the aftermath.
It shows us what the revelation has turned Don into.
Do you see a hero here? Because if you ask me, I don't think the word "hero" will appear in W Corp Don's thoughts ever again after this point.

Silly little theory about the sinners, the associations and numbers in different languages.
warning, this theory contains spoilers for limbus. ruina and the latest dantes notes. you have been warned. so with the reveal of the newest numbered association in the lastest dantes notes, ive began to notice something. each of the associations numbers and names seem to correspond to the sinner number and language of the country of their book of origin of the sinners in limbus company. here are the current examples. 1) hana assoc - yi sang - korean 2) zwei assoc - faust - german 3) tres assoc - don quixote - spanish 4) shi assoc - ryoshu - japanese 5) cinq assoc - meursault - french 6) liu assoc - hong lu - chinese 7) seven assoc - heathcliff - english 8) 9) devyat assoc - rodion - russian 10) dieci assoc - dante - italian 11) Öufi - sinclair - swiss german 12) 13) as you can see, the associations language of origin and number correlates to the sinners of limbus company. the reason why 8, 12 and 13 is because we dont know their names in universe, so then again projmoon could just reveal something entirely different for the names and prove this whole theory wrong, but itll be fun to think about until then.

Ahem, now I shall recount the tales of the other me’s! These stories are one of many questions, and some answers! A noble mystery for a noble duelist!
Firstly, the version of myself that resides within the Shi Association. Now, the Shi are known for their top of the line stealth, so I had to approach this problem with the utmost thought and strategy!
I walked right into their headquarters!
Of course, I had no idea which section I belonged to so I started from the bottom and worked my way upwards. Luckily, it was very soon into my investigation that I strolled into the Section 5 headquarters and discovered I was the director! Alas, we truly were kindred spirits, both directors of our own associations Section 5! What wonderful news that was!
I also got the chance to speak with her! Sadly, our conversation was brief as it was cut short by one of her juniors walking in and informing the Shi me that there was business to be dealt with. It twas a shame, but the conversation I did have was quite enjoyable and I can say for certain that she too possesses a heart of justice!
Next, my Zwei me!
She was once again easy to track down, as I had seen her before! I returned to the Zwei Section 6’s office and requested to meet her.
This me also seemed to have a Sinclair to accompany her! The two are apparently training partners and are frequently sent on missions together! How wonderful!
I got to have a long conversation with her, which was admittedly mostly us discussing famous Fixers from our associations. But she did tell me about some of her coworkers, which all seem to be quite the company!
I intend to return one day and meet more of her coworkers. This me was another protector of justice!
The W Corp me was the most difficult to get a hold of, but after speaking with the customer service receptionist, I was able to have a talk with her!
This me holds much passion for her job and WARP trains and told me a brief history of them! Twas a most interesting subject! But again, her duty called and she had to depart.
Once again, a me who is an agent of justice!

Ishmael and Heath will probably have the shared theme of: revenge can and will warp you into something you're not, possibly making you just like those that have harmed you in the past
Can't think of anything for Heath and Don, unfortunately, but I do have something else
Don and Hong Lu: playing a character, an exaderation of the self for the sake of others.
This is mostly bc of Don's Shi identity wherein she acts more outgoing for the sake of her subordinates and Hong Lu's naivety [contrasted by his surprising emotional intelligence]. Of course they are probably also Like That usually, but have made a shallower version of themselves to show and fool others.
Yeah it was pretty obvious that Heathcliff and Ishmael were bound together by their obsession with revenge hence Heathcliff being the Sinner who understands Ishmael the best despite not getting along, but after the Christmas event and how he actually thinks about the whole ordeal it got me kind of...doubting? Despite him being driven by revenge in the book the way he's portrayed in Limbus is def much tamer and softer compared to his book counterpart.
Ishmael is much more blinded by revenge than Heathcliff is, of course this is partly because she thought Queequeg to be dead but even in the dungeon she can't let go of her wish to kill Ahab, and it's consuming her and destroying her, while Heathcliff can't stop thinking about Cathy and the type of abuse he suffered at Wuthering Heights is different from the cultlike struggle at The Pequod, with a repeating cycle of abuse and loss befalling the estate, so I feel like it can go a lot of ways.
Actually like Gregor, Rodion & Sinclair's chapters are grouped together, I feel like Yi Sang, Ishmael and Heathcliff are a similar case, all three of them are closely associated with rain, hell Heathcliff's chapter have us going back to T Corp when it was an important part of Yi Sang's dungeon so it makes me wonder how all of that is coming back since the two previous chapters also emphasize grief + Queequeg's speech about "burials" with how Heathcliff is associated with graves and even gets an ID as Queequeg.
As for Don and Heathcliff, maybe they are both blinded by ideals in some ways, Don is such a strong believer in her own fantasy justice while Heathcliff despite blantantly despising the rich also wishes to become one of them thinking that like that he and Cathy can be together and he won't have to be so deeply haunted anymore, but the reality is not quite as simple going by both the original book and how PM works tend to be.
Don and Hong Lu's connection was a VERY good catch though I actually hadn't thought of that. Specially since Don seems to have some kind of connection to obsessively "reaching a star" and Hong Lu's EGO of "land of illusion". They also share the theme of the difference between reality and illusion that is pretty clear for Don and the Don Quixote book and while I haven't read Dream of The Red Chamber because it's difficult access and length I heard also deals with the difference between the genuine and the disingenuous both in the more human, literal way and in a more philosophical and metaphisical way. They are both fake people whether they realize this or not.
