Now that law is over, some of my favourite "my law teacher knows I'm an author and know random trivia facts" moments:
T: Chuuya, what do you think of when you read "occasioning"?
Me, not prepared for the game of word association I play when writing because I am not currently doing so: Uhh. Occasion.
T:
Me, brain doing the slowest word association it's ever done:.... Events... A wedding.
-
Me: The language of the Offences Against the Person Act must be updated post haste.
T:
Me: Or forthwith.
T:
T: Are you doing that on purpose?
Me: Would the examiner find it funny?
T: Potentially.
Me: Then yes.
-
(After we go to break) T: Are you actually going to say that in your exam?
Me: Should I not?
T: I think you should go for it. If you said no, I would have told you to do it.
-
T: A good thing I don't see mentioned much when talking about the language is "actual". What synonyms do you all think of for actual?
T: Lyney?
Me, actually prepared this time: Tangible.
Class:
Me: Or real works too.
T: Can anyone think of a better word that would work in place of actual?
Me: Acute. That way they can keep the acronym.
-
K: What's a listed building?
T: It's -
Me: I know!
Me: Sorry.
T: Alright, Chuuya. You can explain what a listed building is.
Me: A listing is a restriction on what you can and can't do to a building, there's different grades with different restrictions. Typically, it's stuff like you can't change the exterior, or interior, or you have to get permission before doing so. Town or guild halls are usually listed and you can't change the exterior -
K: What's a guild hall?
Me: Where farmers and tradesmen used to trade when markets were the primary source of everything. You can't change the exterior but can change the interior with permission which is why town halls always become art galleries. Something like York Minster is the highest listing and you can't change anything which is why there's a masonry on site so they can constantly repair and restore the building without risk of changing the design.
K: What's York Minster?
Me: It's... It's the biggest gothic.. cathedral in.. the country. I don't - I don't know what I'm supposed to...
T: K, at some point you have to look at the country's history yourself and stop relying on your classmates. Lyney, thank you for your explanation, does everyone understand what a listed building is now?
-
T, reading a nuisance scenario: Chris owns a bird of prey centre.
Me: What species?
T:
Me: Some hawks, eagles, and falcons require registration to be owned, so if he's not got them registered, it would be breaking the law and could be considered a malicious act.
J: Who would go into their exam and know that?
Me: You want to be a barrister and you keep talking about that friend who's a lawyer. The registration requirement is from an act, so at some point I imagine it'll be relevant to a lawyer.
J: But why do you care?
T: It is actually a good point, because it could be relevant to the question, but let's see if it mentions the bird later in the scenario.
(Later in the scenario) T: Kevin attacked Amy's dog Steve. Kevin is a peregrine falcon. Kevin is not registered.
Me: *smug smile at J*
J: Why do they expect us to know that's necessary?
Me: Well, I imagine if it didn't matter, they wouldn't bother telling us. Also, it wouldn't attack a dog unless something had happened so it sounds more like Steve attacked Kevin first.
J: What is with you?
Me: If you'd prefer, I can not tell you anything and get a better answer than you because I know more.

my mother taught me to crochet when i was young. she was left handed, so she taught me how in the bathroom mirror so her hands would be in the right position.
she learned to crochet from her grandmother, who was right handed. her grandma was the one that originally used the bathroom mirror to teach her granddaughter properly.
i find something poetic about that. here in this bathroom mirror, through generations, we adapt to our young who have a different way of learning and interacting with the world

I wrote this on twitter but I thought I'd put it here too, since I occasionally get asks on how I draw/any tips I might have. On twitter I also made the caveat that I don't feel I'm qualified to give anyone tips, LOL, but I was drawing today for an assignment and felt like this is worth noting to any beginner artists who have a tendency of clinging onto sketches that they feel like they finally got right! (A.K.A, a habit I still have years later HA!) This isn't so much of a tutorial as expressing my thought process in this discovery of how to draw more dynamic pieces. I found it to be satisfying on my end, seeing it unravel, so hopefully it can help someone who may be struggling with the same thing I am.
MAKING MORE DYNAMIC PIECES, A PERSONAL STUDY!:
Tumblr media
I wasn't upset by this drawing, but I could tell there was something stagnant about it so I ended up pushing it and redrawing it a million times to see if I could somehow make it look more dynamic.
Tumblr media
Here's one part of the timelapse - I'm clearly adamant on trying to make this pose/composition work but while the sketch itself may look better, the stagnation hasn't changed. Perhaps this works for some people, but anyone seeking a dynamic visual will be able to spot that this simply isn't working as anything more than a semi-decent anatomy study attempting to be applied.
I changed the position of both arms, I tried to play around with the angle of the head, I tried to just the hips forward more so that the spine had increased curvature, but the main issue, really, was that the initial composition lacked the dynamism in general. It prioritised dramaticism over dynamism. Both can exist in the same piece - it did not, in this one.
Tumblr media
This was the new sketch I started with. Less rigid base to go off of. Just getting down the general shape I wanted to score - make the spine and tail take a sort of mid-whip path, shoulders hunched, hips cant forwards, as if he's curling in on himself. I think for a dynamic piece, it's more helpful that your initial sketch uses the body as a general marker as opposed to something to do lineart over (granted, I don't really do lineart anyway, my sketch is usually the extent of my "lineart", but since this is just looking at creating a more dynamic composition, I think it still applies!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here it's the same principle. For the left image (the legs) I've established where the knee of the right leg goes, and where the hip that precedes the left leg will sit. These are just base anatomical structures that help me figure out 1. Whether or not the mere idea of this composition will work, and 2. where I have to stop once I start drawing. For me, having some sort of limitation for the body helps me stay within range of proportionate anatomy (not that I particularly care for the anatomy to be realistic, just proportionate to the style I'm drawing in)
On the right image is also the same principle. Establishing the movement of the arm, the elbow/arm bend, and the hand. (If you see the full sketch before the two above, I established the hand in that one too - it really is helpful figuring out the placement of the hand ahead of time.) If it looks atrocious afterwards I always have the lasso tool/eraser to save me.
Tumblr media
The new attempt brings me to this. While preference in art is subjective, I do think I'd be staying in SOME realm of objectivity when I say this is more dynamic than my initial sketch, LOL. Of course, lighting/rendering choices help push the composition a little more, but this achieves what I couldn't do with that first sketch. I had a general idea, but it's important to know when to let go of something that clearly isn't working.
Would love for anyone to add their own tips or ideas to this post - I'm not particularly known for dynamic pieces so I'm always looking to learn. This was a really valuable study for me so I wanted to share it, but everyone has their own method and what works for me may not work for the next person!
There's a few other asks that asked me for tips on general anatomy, and more specifically legs (oh dear god, I'M going to need to study for that before writing out any sort of resource guide for that, lol) that I hope to get around to doing in the near future. Thank you for your guys' vote of confidence, haha! ❤️

Hermione, in both canon and often in fanon, seems to have predominately male friendships and kind of difficult time building strong relationships with women (Lavender, Fleur, etc.). Even initially with Luna, Hermione was particularly skeptical and had a rocky start.
What's your theory on why this is?
Hermione, especially in the early books, is written by an author who treats her unfemininity as a quality that makes her different from, and superior to, other girls. Hermione is self-serious, intellectual, and decisive, which are classically masculine virtues, which Hermione (and the author) are aware of; and so Hermione eschews femininity in any number of ways. The other girls at Hogwarts, meanwhile, with the exception of Ginny, are often portrayed as shallow, vapid, flirty (count the number of times Lavender or Parvati "giggles" or goes "oooh"), hyperemotional, and boy-obsessed. Meanwhile, Hermione is intense, driven, and oblivious to other people's feelings — in many respects "boyish." Not until the later books, when both the characters and their writing starts to mature, is humanity offered to people like Cho Chang or Fleur Delacour — and even then, Lavender's arc in sixth year is this remarkably mean subplot where a sixteen-year-old girl becomes the butt of endless jokes because she has the audacity to... act silly around her crush. (If you think "Won-Won" is a bad nickname, you need to go see what actual teens in relationships call each other, because I'm telling you, Ron has it easy.)
The narrative wants you to know that Hermione is special, and her specialness is underscored by her difference from other women. In canon, she buys into that specialness, which leads to a degree of disdain for other girls that's fueled by a superiority complex and internalized misogyny. I say this as someone who adores her, and adores her in her complexity: Hermione has trouble forming friendships with women because she believes that she is Not Like Other Girls, and her author agrees with her.

Globby and that cat get off to a rough start in s1e3 "Big Roommates 2", but by s2e16 "The Globby Within" they seem to get along just fine, so I like to think there was some behind-the-scenes development there :)

early series Wolfe and students dynamic is insane. he wants them all to fuck off forever. he sees his younger self in them. he’d rather be doing anything else. he’ll throw hands with anyone who threatens them. he sent two of them home on the first day by random chance and didn’t care. they’re the future of the library. they’re just kids. he’ll take a bullet for any of them without hesitation. if he has to answer one more stupid question he’ll walk into the sea and never return.

Not to go on a whole Jace Stardiamond thing again and I know I’ve said something very similar before but I literally don’t know why people take Jace’s statement that the sorcerers sit around and talk about how great having innate magic is at face value when
1) we know he’s keeping at least one pretty big secret so honestly any of his responsibilities at this point are his word vs. what the bad kids perceive
2) even if we take it as a given that Brennan seems pretty hard set on trying to convey that Jace’s life has always been easy, WHY would we assume that sorcery class is as easy as Jace makes it out to be when it’s a bunch of young people coping with innate powers they can’t control unless they have an understanding of themselves. We can say he’s a bad teacher who doesn’t actually teach his students all we want (and I think in some ways he probably is a flawed teacher) but if he was as disastrous and neglectful as people make out, why do we know so little abt what goes on in that class? If he was slacking off w the freshman there would be consequences. If he was a trainwreck I think it would be well known, there are probably kids with wild magic, imo there should be mishaps happening all the time and yet we get zip. There wouldn’t be such an air of mystery abt wtf sorcery class even is. Im not saying he’s a great teacher, I said this once before as a joke but “sitting around and talking about how great innate magic is” can mean very different things when approaching inexperienced 14 year olds vs a powerful and jaded 17 year old.
Like. Maybe I’m too close to the character to see things from an unbiased pov but the internal logic does not mesh for me. It doesn’t read to me the thing someone would say if they were overconfident in their ability as a teacher, it reads to me as undervaluing what he does as “it’s chill man. No big deal”

1. Holy shit I am so happy I found another person who gets how smart Percy is, and gets that every instance of Percy looking/getting called stupid is due to his dyslexia or people not telling him anything.
2. Which book/chapter is this from? I need to bookmark it ASAP and start shouting it from the metaphorical tumblr hills.
3. We really don't talk about how good a mom Sally is? Like yeah she's badass and gentle but like. She respects Percy. When the school system failed Percy, she's the one who still not only believed that he was smart but still acted like it and probably taught him too. Queen mom Sally Jackson right there.
1.) YEAHH EXACTLY. Or his ADHD 😭 It drives me NUTS whenever Percy is treated as the dumb + comedic guy. Like I get what they're saying and why they're saying it, but sometimes his character gets reduced to JUST that and it hurts my soul. I get that he's funny as a narrator and as a character and sometimes he can be a little "clueless" but it just feels like some people like to think of that as either all he is or a huge part of who he is. I believe I've also seen Leo get this treatment despite literally being insanely smart at such a young age so. that's...fun. They can be funny and smart too 😞
2.) It's from the 10th Anniversary edition of The Lightning Thief! It's Rick's cover letter for the first readers of the manuscript & a note from the narrator. I don't have a copy of that edition myself, but I've seen some pictures of it on Rick's blog and someone posted one of the pages on Reddit (where I got it from).
Here's the full page from Reddit (source) & the picture from Rick's blog where the page is visible (source):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3.) YEEEAHHHH I LOVE HER SO MUCH!!! What I would do to get adopted by her rn. The way she talks to him makes me kinda teary-eyed because she's just so...you can just tell how much she loves Percy and that she would do anything to make sure he grew up resilient and kind in a world that's always out to get him. She believes in him so much that it just makes me lose my mind a little. It's just so sweet and I can't help but feel so moved by it.
I'm not sure if you've read Chalice of the Gods, but there's this scene where (spoilers, kinda) Sally talks to Percy after the whole thing with Hebe and honestly this scene makes me want to sob and cry and weep

Consider, if you will, AU (either with canon post-s1 pre-s2 events but D.A.D.D.I.E.S. solves things before season 2 would start, or no Doodler/betrayal but Nicky still has to leave because FBI or other reasons) in which Terry Jr is the full time drama teacher for Teen High. Nicky returns from wherever he's been and is like "Well I want to be an active part of my kid's life and try and make up for lost time. I should go to his parents' evening, find out how he's doing in school, and meet his teachers. Especially this Mr Marlowe guy, Taylor seems to think he's awesome." And walking right into that classroom/hall to find his ex-boyfriend best friend sitting there in a dorky sweater and tie combo
Cue Terry, without missing a beat, greeting them as if nothing is wrong
Internal: when the FUCK did he come back and oh my god this is so awkward fuck I have to be professional how do I tell this guy that his kid is a loveable little shit after everything that's happened oh god oh fuck
Externally: "Hello Taylor and Mr Close-Foster-Freeman. I'm Taylor's drama teacher" *shakes hand* "Would you like to take a seat?"
