Sherlock Holmes Canon Content Analysis
My Holmie @cinny13 and I ran a content analysis on the Sherlock Holmes Canon, running through each "suspicious" description Watson gives of Holmes's hands. So this means "Holmes clapped his hands" does not apply, however "long thin hands", absolutely does. After gathering all the relevant passages (thanks to the author's personal annotated edition of the Canon), we have quantified the qualitative data.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That Watson may have an obsession with Holmes's hands is obvious. In future when I run over the Canon again I think it would be relevant to compare all of the hand descriptions, with all the rest concerning Holmes's body (e.g. "sinewy neck" or "gaunt limbs").
Anyway, I advocate for using science on the Sherlock Holmes Canon. Never stop being insane because this is what the world truly needs at the end of the day.

They say that people usually take on a little niche interest, or subtle personality trait, or similar quirks to their comfort characters that they grew up reading/watching.... Well, thank you, John Hamish Watson for giving me a life-long obsession with knitted jumpers, and a stubborn tendency to "hunt and peck" when I write!

:: January 3 :: Selection for Week 1 of 2025 :: 🐝 "the sign of four" (1890) from the daily sherlock holmes: a year of quotes*🖊️
"My mind," he said, "rebels at stagnation. Give me problems, give me work, give me the most abstruse cryptogram, or the most intricate analysis, and I am in my own proper atmosphere. I can dispense then with artificial stimulants. But I abhor the dull routine of existence. I crave for mental exaltation. That is why I have chosen my own particular profession, or rather created it, for I am the only one in the world." "The only unofficial detective?" I said, raising my eyebrows. "The only unofficial consulting detective," he answered. "I am the last and highest court of appeal in detection."
The quotation for January 3 in Week 1 contains Holmes's celebrated description of his self-created profession -- auspiciously apt as a starting point for me :-) But I was especially struck by how the passage, as excerpted in The Daily Sherlock Holmes, ends with the assertion that he is "the last and highest court of appeal in detection." I'd forgotten this claim from the original -- perhaps because, for a good while now, my primary frame of reference for Holmesian lore is BBC Sherlock -- and the series sidesteps offering an explicit statement of the "court of appeal" perspective.
What is foregrounded in BBCS is the next thought from the original chapter (which isn't included in the January 3 quotation): that when the police "are out of their depths — which, by the way, is their normal state — the matter is laid before me." What BBCS eschews and retains in its presentation thus sharpens the image of Sherlock as arrogant. The two observations aren't equivalent in triangulating Sherlock-as-consulting-detective, especially as the former one places Holmes in relation to people in jeopardy or in harm's way collaterally -- individuals in specific circumstances, not mere abstractions. There are so many possible nuances for the reasons behind why a court of appeal is needed in investigations. One is certainly Sherlock's belief that he is singular, and quite confident that it should be thus; but it also conveys the need for advocacy as a reparative force, in the face of institutional indifference or the weighting of societal norms to favor those with power. Consulting detectiveness isn't simply puzzle-solving in the service of self-interested expedience, conducted by an uncaring discriminator of fact (a "high-functioning sociopath"). The "court of appeal" concept does finally appear in BBCS, at the very end of the third episode of the thematically erratic fourth series -- although the words are spoken by Mary, in the valedictory soliloquy that was gifted to her character, toward whatever end it was supposed to achieve. Unlike ACD canon, then, it arrives as something of an afterthought.

Wait… the fact that Sherlock Holmes is now public domain means that some of the fanfics on AO3 can actually become books now? ‘Cause if that’s the case we need to vote for our favorites and make a whole collection with johnlock as part of the plot.

I've got a question for the ACD Holmes community. What is "The practical handbook of bee culture'"? I just saw that it is a book you can buy, that is supposed to be Holmes's journal that he wrote during his time in Sussex, which is also supposed to reference a marriage to Mrs Hudson (?!) and other things. All the booksellers list the author as Sherlock Holmes (which obv. can't be true) and Google can tell me nothing about it. Is it fanfiction, that just happened to be sold as a book? What is this?

Deduction Tips #16
The size of a bag is indicative of how much a person needs to carry, and usually we prefer to carry less things. When you see someone with a bag (be it a backpack, a purse, or anything else) think about why this person needs a bigger one rather than a smaller one, and what that says about the contents of the bag and the situation of the person carrying it

It's well-understood that Hugh Laurie's depiction of Gregory House is very much based on Sherlock Holmes (see article above), but there's a bit more to it than that!
Arthur Conan Doyle wrote of Dr Joseph Bell, his teacher at Edinburgh University, who apparently "used methods of observation and deduction on his patients." His autobiography, Memories and Adventures (1923) recalls an instance of Bell accurately reasoning the occupation of a civilian patient as well as a few other details. While this had produced dramatic effect at times, "there were [also] times when he blundered". Needless to say, Dr Bell is regarded as the original inspiration for Sherlock Holmes, and it is fun to see an evolution of this character become more like his real-life inspiration.
Additionally (and this is complete coincidence) there is the detail that an undoubted prototype of Sherlock Holmes, appearing in Doyle's 1887 Uncle Jeremy's Household is named Hugh Lawrence! Hugh Laurie has never played Sherlock Holmes, but among having played Mycroft Holmes and Greg House, it's close enough for me :)

I think one of my Sherlock 'What Ifs' is probably this: What if Sherlock didn't survive the fall? I was thinking about this, then I decided to draw it. Judging by Johns reaction to Sherlock's FAKED death, I think we can safely assume this wouldn't end in John's favour at all.
