The Shedunnit podcast is a joy anyway, but there is a (very) brief mention of Phryne Fisher on this one, which explores whether there were any real-life lady detectives in the 1920s and 1930s.

My media this week (21-27 Apr 2024)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
📚 STUFF I READ 📚
😊 rounding third, sliding home. (througheden) - 68K, enjoyable steddie AU with pro baseball player Steven & massage therapist Eddie
🥰 Daddy Issues (His Boy Next Door #39) (RJ Moray) - reread; just a big fan of Jack & Channon & their ongoing story!
🥰 Common Ground (His Boy Next Door #40) (RJ Moray) - LOVE that Jack & Ewan are finding some common ground - really love that this series is showing how two people who don't particularly care for each other can work to find connection for the sake of the people they DO love
😍 ACT-verse series (ann_anotherthing) - truly outstanding series about middle-aged Steddie getting a 2nd chance romance after their first one flamed out 25 yrs earlier. Full series is 117K but it starts with A Certain Type (54K), which is a fully complete story with satisfying HEA - the rest are flashback fics or wonderfully indulgent epilogue/vignettes, full of fluffy and delicious porn. The author confesses to basically turning them into her middle-aged OCs but 1) I think her projections of their characters in middle-age with these particular life experiences seem reasonably plausible and more importantly 2) I don't fucking care because this story and these characters (main & supporting) are AMAZING.
💖💖 +227K of shorter fic so shout out to these I really loved 💖💖
When you stop being a ghost in a shell (Bittersweet_in_Boston) - MCU: Stucky, 12K - Hydra finds Steve in 1952 & then they have The Asset and The Captain. Except they really should have known better than to ever let them see one another.
Where the Sunflowers Grow (AidaRonan) - Stranger Things: Buckingham, 30K - incredible Chrissy recovery fic with bonus Buckingham. Just. So Fucking Good.
Early Returns (rageprufrock) - Inception: Arthur/Eames, 15K - fabulous AU where Arthur's an editor who has everything on lock, dammit & Eames is a reporter who wants to mess him up. Also the newsroom is nothing but a high-pressure high school when it comes to gossip.

@shark-myths I had to think of The House on Rosewood Lane listening to this
Caroline Crampton's podcast is wholly wonderful, there are also a few episodes about queer themes in detective stories.
I can also wholeheartedly recommend her former podcast srsly - that takes all things pop culture seriously, with her colleague then from the New Statesman, Anna Leszkiewicz.

Bad hats, cat's pyjamas, banting, goops, creatures, and playing possum - what WERE people going on about during the Golden Age of detective fiction? Caroline Crampton of Shedunnit podcast and I get sleuthing into the slang of the mystery novels of the 1920s and 1930s.

Shedunnit is a wonderful little podcast about the golden age of detective fiction. I highly recommend it if you're at all a fan of cozy mysteries, even if you haven't read much of the genre - my only experience is a couple Agatha Christies and some BBC mystery shows. The host discusses a wide range of topics, including specific authors, widely used tropes, famous cases of the day and how they inspired mystery authors, and what sociopolitical issues shaped the genre.
It's smart, engaging, and oddly soothing and nostalgic. I can't recommend it enough!

Hello! I have just binge read all the Lord Peter Wimsey books in the space of a few weeks. Do you have any recommendations of similar style mysteries? I adore the style and characterisation of LPW and crave something similar. People have recced the continuation by Jill Paton Walsh but I am hesitant. Anyway, I would love any recommendations! Also I am very much enjoying this podcast!
Thank you so much for listening to the podcast! We’re so sorry to be tardy in responding (life has been...interesting! for everyone, and we’re no exception!). It’s so tricky to recommend things similar to Sayers, because the elements of the novels that draw people to Sayers can vary so much, and the things that make her so special to us are also fairly unique! (and we can’t comment on the JPW continuations, as neither of us as read them).
If you specifically want mysteries, you might like to browse http://shedunnitshow.com/--the shownotes for each episode list all the books mentioned (and if you aren’t listening to the Shedunnit podcast about Golden Age Detective Fiction, check it out!)
HOWEVER! Since you mention specifically that you’re drawn to the style and characterization of Lord Peter, I (Charis) am going to make a personal recommendation that’s out of genre and period, but in keeping (at least for me!) in character, and suggest the Queen’s Thief series by Megan Whelan Turner ( @meganwhalenturner ). It’s YA fantasy, and if that’s not your usual cup of tea then PLEASE give at least the first to books a try anyway! They begin with The Thief, and continue in The Queen of Attolia, The King of Attolia, Conspiracy of Kings, and Thick as Thieves. The final book, Return of the Thief, is on the horizon.
Readers/Listeners, do you have any recommendations to add? Please comment with titles!

Balekin being creepy and maybe I ship it?!(idk I’m sorry!)
So Balekin has always noticed Jude, when she first sparred with and beat Cardan at the sword fighting thingy and then later when Cardan became king, at the prison. He is angry with her. He suspects shedunnit. She got him thrown in jail. He gets that Ludo dude to slap her, which is a jerk move. After she gets kidnapped and taken to the Undersea, though, and she is “glamoured”, he starts allowing himself to come on to her. Which is super creepy? My sis in law thinks he wasn’t being amorous, but I disagree! When she is stroking his arms covered in thorns, and his hair is swirling in the water, and he tells her to kiss him, there is NO REASON for him to ask her this. He just wants her to. So she shivers but kisses him quickly. Then he says
“KISS ME LIKE ONE OF YOUR FRENCH GIRLS, JACK” (kiss me as if I’m Cardan)
and I’m all, WHOA, back up, this guy knows she actually loves Cardan. He is glamouring her to treat him like her true love, to kiss him like her true love; this is a stalker-lover-who-knows-she-doesn’t-love-him-back-but-is-hypnotizing-her-to-kiss-him-like-she-does level of villainy. On the one hand he is acting realllllly creepy. On the other hand, it’s kinda hot. Hot in the Phantom of the Opera/Kylo Ren/ Loki fanfic kind of way. But it’s CANON.
Then he instructs her that, once she leaves the undersea, to come to his house as soon as possible. Then, he stops himself, he must flutter a handkerchief in her path as a codeword to come over, me mum’s not home. And then he gives her some new pearl earrings or a necklace? I forget which? But it obviously freaks Jude out. Afterward she even hates looking at the ocean, the smell... and she is so broken mentally and physically that she is behaving as if she was glamoured; she can’t be glamoured, but maybe she was a little seduced. In fact, she immediately is makin her way downtown to Balekin’s house the moment she can LEAP OUT OF HER FREAKING WINDOW(I’m coming my loooooooove) at Madoc’s house to run over there in nothing but a nightdress and then Balekin is so gleefully evil and like, “Could you be a dear and kill Cardan for me, my creature?” And she’s like, “Of course. If you’re a bird, I’m a bird.” and then I think they kiss again? Also, Jude may say that people look at her with disgust, but it’s all in her head; she imagines a lot, like how Cardan’s smile is always so “cruel” when he’s just smiling cuz he’s an awkward doof.
Also I was shipping this creepy couple right up until Balekin’s like “Twas the girl! She poisoned him!” And Jude’s like “u wot m8″ and Cardan’s like “Don’t order her around, that’s my job” and Jude’s like “darn tootin’!”
...but with all this in mind, supposing Jude was feeling like he was seducing her and she had to pretend to go along with it, since she didn’t really consent, it’s all very rapey and that’s probably why she actually killed Balekin. If she’s disgusted by the smell of the sea, it probably reminds her of his lips, and that would make me shiver, too. I’m just not sure if I like it or not. I think I do. Help.
(I mean I know cardan is the better guy in this situation also balekin is like so much older than Jude but dang those kisses were pretty cute)

After the First World War, there was a great flowering of female independence as more women chose to live single lives. This change, and the backlash to it, is all there to be found in the murder mysteries of the period, if you just dig a little below the surface. From self-contained, professional women like Mary Whittaker in Dorothy L Sayers’ Unnatural Death to dear, fluffy Miss Marple, there are a multitude of single women’s lives to discover. But let’s go back to the beginning. This particular story starts with the surplus women.

goblin, king
i’ve answered king.
goblin - what makes you happy?
Hugs. Snuggles with dogs and cats. Spending time with my dog, Elvis. When Elvis puts his paw on my knee or nudges me with his nose to get a pat. Walks. Walks with company. Walks alone. Along the stretch of creek about twenty minutes from my house with the large gums and the bubbling water over stones and the swing bridge and market garden in the sun on a not too hot morning. Reading. Reading cosy books. Reading good books or fic with a fresh mug of tea and maybe some buttered toast. In fact, stories make me happy. Stories and storytelling in all its forms. Stephen Michael King and Alison Lester picture books. The Shedunnit podcast. Curated playlists. Live theatre. Shared jokes. Shared food. Cooking. Cooking for friends and family, especially when it turns out perfectly and everyone is having a good time. Getting lunch out with friends. Getting cocktails with friends on the rare occasion I can afford them. Boardgame nights. Summer fruit. Holidays by the beach. Holding hands. Walks along the beach, whatever the weather. Rock pooling. Exploring. Cosy fireside drinks in pubs after walking along the beach in the middle of winter. Wildflowers. Spring.
But mostly hugs!

Bookish Podcasts
I'm such a nerd that I listen to podcasts about books, so here are some of my favorites
1. Overdue - hosts Craig and Andrew take turns reading books "you probably should have read by now" and discuss. Their reading list includes both classics and buzzy books! It's great for learning about a book you don't actually want to read, or for having deeper discussion on a book you have read. Plus they've been doing the show for like 10 years so there's tons of episodes.
2. Shedunnit - host Caroline Crampton digs into the Golden Age of Detective Fiction to discuss topics such as popular tropes, real cases that inspired writers of the time, author profiles, and social issues of the day reflected in the literature. I have read almost no books from this era, and it's still super interesting.
3. Reading Glasses - a reading podcast that doesn't talk about specific books, but about reading culture in general. Hosts Mallory and Brea take on reading problems like, how do you trim down your TBR? how do you read diversely? what is the best reading snack? They genuinely have great advice!
4. Potterless/The Newest Olympian - two separate podcasts by Mike Schubert with the same basic premise. Mike managed to reach the age of 24 without having read a Harry Potter book, so he began Potterless, a kind of chapter-by-chapter book club of the series. Now that he's finished Harry Potter, he's moved on to the Percy Jackson series with the same goal. Mike is really funny and also fair - he understands these are children's books he's reading, but still recognizes their value and has great discussions with various guests. (He also is not afraid to call out JKR on her bs and acknowledge how it influenced her writing).
5. Books in the Freezer - NOTHING adds books to my TBR like this podcast. Each episode focuses on a different sub-category of horror, like folk horror or horror by women or slasher horror. After a discussion on the topic, host Stephanie and her guest pick a few books on the topic to recommend. She's had some really great horror authors on as guests, including Grady Hendrix, Stephen Graham Jones, Courtney Summers, and more.
