Day 24 - Chemistry
For Inktober this year I grabbed a bunch of Age of Empires 2 technologies as prompts and am drawing a Touhou character for each.

Thinking about Rin Satsuki (the cut third playable character from EOSD) and how cool it would be if there was a story where she attempts to form herself into existence by like taking apart the other characters.
I mean like at first the starts off ripping code and "pieces" (thinking like parts of their design and stuff) from basic enemies, her singular piece of code desperately craving to be "real" in a sense. And it would sort of just end up snowballing into her beginning to attempt taking pieces from Rumia, Cirno and at least attempting to get some from the SDM.
The only characters Rin wouldn't grab any code and pieces from would be Reimu and Marisa, because she wants to be one of them. But she can't be one of them if they're not there.
Rin Satsuki wants to be real, she craves to exist after never getting the chance. She's very much terrifying to witness since she is just pieces from other characters that don't fit at all, but she's not an evil demon.

oh wow haha so good to see you again if ur coming back from my marisa drawing. if not you can find it here. if you are from there, you heard me talk about my cirno day drawing - well i decided to polish it up and give it more life (also as a uni submission) but why not share it here again and also talk more about cirno and my relationship w her.
if you want to see the og its here.
art piece commentary time!
i started my 2hu journey w eosd and thats where she, the legend, debuted. she immediately struck me as a cottage girl particularly of a shepherded kind, idk why, maybe its her talks about english beef. her later appearances really confused me though because in DDC she suddenly all small and scrunched and i thought of her as more being in her very early 20's maybe 19, and she is still that way for me. i dont like giving up the headcanons. hence why i drew her the way i did. also i took away her socks and spikes on the dress because they broke the damn composition, but maybe i just suck and couldn't made them fit nicely. in the background we can see edge of the forest of magic and yokai moun..peaks? i dont know what happened. that does not look like mountains, i forgor that its like. a single mountain? well now its yokai peaks ig. oh yeah also elfen ears because shes a fairy
i think this is it. if you have any further questions please refer to my secretary (comments or asks) and she will notify me.
well ill see you soon :)

The basis of MariSaku to me is that Sakuya is so removed from humanity in her time serving the SDM prior to EoSD, that even an intruder and thief like Marisa draws her in.
She does shop in the human village, but she's only really there for buisness and her dress and eccentricities tends to keep people from really approaching her willingly. Reimu is a pretty constant human she interacts with, but most every time that happens it's because she's escorting Remilia over because Remilia wants to see Reimu.
Marisa is different. She actively comes to where Sakuya lives and works (even if it is for the books), and regularly gets to interact with her one-on-one. She's clearly taken a liking to her, as seen in both of the good endings to EoSD where Sakuya serves and helps Marisa despite her seemingly not having any permission to be where she is in both cases. Even in the stage 5 interactions, the two bounce off each other rather well in the very eccentric way that they do, showing that Sakuya's off-kilter way of thinking is something Marisa can roll with and play around.
Marisa is the "human" rep a lot of times, but she is very much still an oddball compared to the likes of the randos you see in the human village. Both of these aspects gel well with Sakuya, and i think she really appreciates that and would grow close to Marisa as they interacted further. It's a bit hard to say how much it'd last, Marisa is ever the flirt with many a girl in Gensokyo and Sakuya has her own duties, but I like to think there's a notable spark there.

One thing i always appreciated about hisoutensoku in particular was the way it used characters bullet hell styles of fighting in their fighting game movesets.
Like, historically the difference between reimu and marisa is an easy to play low damage character who doesn't need to bother aiming versus a high-speed high-execution character. When bringing them to a fighting game, you'd usually want the series protagonist to play kinda like ryu, being the default character with a tool for everything. And indeed, AoCF does this exact thing, making reimu a jack-of-all-trades character.
But soku instead makes you make this exact decision between the two of them. Reimu's still got her homing shots, but she can also put up walls and has amazing anti-airs, meaning that like in her bullet hell games she can control the screen very well. They couldn't make her homing bullets just hit you from anywhere, so instead they turned her into a really easy to pick up zoner who captures the feeling of playing bullet hell reimu by encouraging her to play less aggressive manner. In both games, you don't need to chase down your opponents, and are instead responding to the threats they're posing and forcing them to make the first move.
In an more basic fighting game, with reimu being the defensive beginner character you'd expect marisa to be a similarly easy character, but with a focus on aggression. But instead, like in the bullet hell, she's kinda both easy and hard at the same time. She's got very simple tools that are really effective, and is extremely fast, and has high damage. But like in touhou, marisa takes high execution. Marisa's combos are way harder than usual. She also can't control the screen as well as reimu, forcing her to use her movement to put herself in really favourable situations. In touhou, i feel like reimu is the basic easy character and marisa is the basic hard character, and most other characters are usually based around a gimmick. So it fits that Reimu and Marisa are both really basic fundamentals-heavy characters, though Marisa asks for a mastery of movement and execution to be played at her best.
but its not just the protagonists, i feel like so many other characters have their gameplay accurately reflect their fights. The big standout for me is Reisen. Her fight in IN is so cool because of the way she uses really really slow bullets and tries to trap you. In Soku, she has bullets that match many of the ones she uses in IN. Her basic B bullets remind me a lot of the ones she uses in her first phase, traveling really fast at you before slowing down when they reach around 3/4ths of the screen. And when it comes to trapping the opponent, reisen's okizeme game is one of the best. And her mixups are amazing thanks to a lot of her fakeout teleports that are reminiscent of the way she teleported her bullets in IN.
There's details like that in most of the characters. Loads of Cirno's bullets in EoSD are fired in shotgun style bursts, and she spellcards like icicle fall that shoot out to the side before moving towards the player. Similarly, Soku cirno's bullets are often fired in similar spread-shot bursts, such as her memorable 5C. And she has some bullets she can ricochet off the ground to control space like icicle fall. Sanae's most memorable spellcard is the one where she traps you between two really wavy beams and forces you to dodge bullets while also trying not to get hit by the moving waves. In soku, one of her strongest aspects is her okizeme, setting up wind tunnels to chase you and read your tech rolls and restricting your options in a similar way. Aya is the fastest touhou character, and uses her speed to get in and take pictures in her home game. Similarly, Aya's main strength in soku is her mobility, and while she suffers at longer ranges she's one of the best characters up close.
I really appreciated just how well touhou characters gameplay translates into their Soku counterparts. This is done so well that i don't even really notice it at first, i pick up a character I've fought or played as in the bullet hells and intuit how im supposed to play them here. This feels pretty obvious, characters in a fighting game spinoff should feel like they do in their home series, but its interesting because the other main touhou fighter doesn't do this as gracefully. I do think AoCF is an excellent game that is outstanding in both gameplay and aesthetics, but moveset wise i find it doesn't translate character gameplay quite so well. I didn't fight nitori in mountain of faith, with her array of unpredictable spell cards with really unique patterns that control the screen, and expect her to focus more on fighting you up close. Reisen's gameplan has completely changed and now uses poison damage and fast melee, and her teleports are now used as mobility tools too instead of strictly mixup tools.
And this is all fine, in my opinion. AoCF feels like the devs looked at the characters' designs and power sets and drew inspiration from that, rather than their in-game spellcards. And I personally think it's very cool having two fighting games based on the same property showing the strengths of both approaches. I love how each games movesets are designed. But I feel like what Soku did when designing its moves is rarely discussed despite being insanely cool and showing incredible attention to detail.

tell me about your favorite touhou character as if your addressing someone with extremely limited knowledge on the series outside of scarlet devil
Okay so Utsuho Reiuji, she's from Touhou 11 which is a fair ways past the touhou 6 you're familiar with- yes EOSD is the sixth one don't- listen the first 5 are kind of not real don't worry about it
Anyway so Utsuho is a Hell Raven who lives in Former Hell, which is kind of just a very big cave that was used as hell until they ran out of space so all the hell stuff moved to Hell, and now all the people nobody likes and a bunch of evil spirits live in Former Hell. Utsuho specifically managed the Hell of Blazing Fires which is y'know a big pit of fire and she makes sure it's the correct amount of fire.
Anyway in touhou 10 two new gods moved into town because outside Gensokyo (which is where these games take place) things ain't too good for beings that need to be believed in to exist. Technology is replacing them. So one of those gods, Kanako, gets a bright idea that since you can't halt the march of progress, she'll just make it a divine thing so everyone believes in her more when there's more tech.
But to do that, she needs tech to stand next to and say "I made this :)", so she decides to turn the Hell of Blazing Fires into a nuclear reactor. Where's she gonna get the nuclear? Easy, a sun is just a big nuclear fission type thing happening, so she grabs a chunk of the Sun God Crow Yatagarasu, stuffs it in Utsuho and she goes BEAST MODE
Eye of the Yatagarasu in her chest. Nuclear control rod arm cannon. Concrete 'elephants foot' leg. Cape with space in it. Holding up a little sun. You wish your fav had this much swag.
But that much swag goes to her head, she has all this incredible power and it has to go somewhere, so she decides to turn the surface into irradiated slag! But then Reimu and Marisa beat her up so she calmed down. So now she just hangs out managing a reactor in Former hell and being the best fucking character. And hanging out with her best friend Orin, who is a catgirl.
Peep her chucking rapidly decaying suns at Reimu

what's your favourite design change you've seen for a touhou character in fanart?
This ask has been sitting in my inbox for a while because i couldn't find a good answer I still don't have a good answer, sorry! But in general, i really tend to like Reimu redesigns Some of my favourite Reimu redesigns emphasise her "back bandages" to other parts of her body (like fists), making her look more scrappy and punchy, but i also love love long hair Reimu for example, and i have a soft spot for EoSD hair Reimu I also think increasing Marisa's hat size and Mamizou's tail size by at least double the original canon size is a great fucking idea I think all of the Touhouvania redesigns are metal as hell (positive) When it comes to super unique designs, i think @8rano is perhaps one of my favourite artists when it comes to Touhou redesigns, i highly reccomend checking out all of their work, it's slightly abstract, and it's really mesmerising and pretty! I also think the redesigns of @primarydragon are really fascinating, especially because their artstyle is also very respectful of ZUN's artstyle, while still including lots of cool original ideas Ah, there's so many more...! So many good artists! Of course we cannot leave out @yori-gami , their redesigns have more western influences, they're very interesting and unique takes on Touhou characters (they remind me a little bit of Wayside and Total Drama Island) Oh and @greatmothsukk draws amazing Touhou characters as Pokemon trainers with their teams sometimes! But what makes it even cooler is that she even replicated the original Pokemon artstyles too! Oh and i can't leave out @octotro0per ! (mild NSFW and general content warning), Octo is a SUPER varied artist with an amazing unique artstyle, they often draw Touhou characters in new and interesting ways, very experimental Oh! And of course @rinelica ! I love her artstyle so much! She draws Touhou characters in a way that remind me of children's books, it's a super unique and interesting artstyle that makes the characters look different and refreshing but still super recogniseable And there are MANY more artsists who i wish to talk about, and i'm sorry if i forgot some! (i can't remember every single one that makes cool Touhou art and redesigns!) I hope that this answer to your ask is satisfying?

Over on another site, the touhou character of the day was Rin Satsuki today. It reminded me of an old Don't Starve Together mod I worked on for the character! You might have even played it way back in the day. I really love Rin Satsuki and have always had a fascination with her "cutting room floor" status. Her being not just a cut Touhou character, but a cut protagonist, a cut protagonist in EoSD, meaning she was set up to be one of the most popular characters of all time just by default probably as she would inadvertently be a new face to represent the Windows Era was just always so interesting to me. I always saw it as her "tragic backstory" had occurred in our world making her feel a little more real in a funny kind of way than any other Touhou Character. Anyway! Rin Satsuki is so cool, and although it's been a long time since I've played it and it may not be that balanced, and I definitely won't update it again any time soon, you can check out the DST mod I made sometime :) (I also worked on an Aya Shameimaru mod and an Iku Nagae mod too!)

After reading a lot of your posts about Reimu's role within Gensoukyou and how the status quo operates, I had a hypothetical question/thought exercise: if there was a particularly intuitive human villager who was able to intuit that the youkai of Gensoukyou aren't allowed to attack the human village, then was able to extrapolate from there that the purpose of the human village is for them to believe in youkai, and then begin to try to convince the other villagers of this and that they could hypothetically destroy the youkai by not believing, would Reimu be compelled to address this, and on what grounds in her stated official capacity? Or would this be handled differently in order to maintain the status quo?
I realize there's several dozen reasons that something like this wouldn't/couldn't happen in the first place, and it could easily be easily solved by "powers that be stage villager's murder by unwitting smalltime youkai and then Reimu Resolves The Incident" but the nature of Reimu's role is new information to me (most of my familiarity with Touhou is through fan games, which seem mostly interested in doing EoSD) so I was wondering if you could provide any more insight.
Reimu would theoretically be compelled to address this as part of her duties, yes. This is part of the reason for basically every conflict in Forbidden Scrollery, but especially the final one; Kosuzu has been becoming less and less afraid of youkai (and indeed close to becoming one herself). Humans becoming youkai is not necessarily a problem in that they’d all change for the personal benefits, but that they’d go “Oh, youkai are my neighbors. They can’t be that bad.”
In general it would be pretty hard to convince the villagers not to believe in youkai, since their lives are affected by them to such an extent; it’s like telling them to not believe in the sun, or the weather. That’s the reason that an isolated little village in the mountains was chosen in the first place; everyone there still believed in youkai even in 1885, so the boundary of common and uncommon sense could form around it. It’s the type of place the stories in Kwaidan sprang from.
Even though it would be hard to convince the villagers not to believe, though, it would still be a problem. Likely one addressed by the youkai rather than by Reimu, though, like how the Vampire Incident (not EoSD, a different one) was solved by the sages. The Hakurei shrine maiden can’t go out and kill people for no (seeming) reason; she has to be believed to be on the side of humans. But she would be compelled to look the other way at whatever happened and clean up afterwards.

the playable wriggle in th19 copium has long since vanished but i am disappointed by how little wriggle gets anything in canon nowadays.
she only ever showed up in 3 games, and she only got dialogue once. one of those times she was just a background character! in HM! because who isn't! basically everyone showed up in HM.
and when it comes to print works, the last non-cameo appearance she got (and even in said cameos she shows up for like one panel) was in strange creators of outer world. in 2017. and even then it was just information, she doesn't get anything other than zun's comments about her and a bunch of description.
why do i care so much about wriggle pretty much fading into irrelevance in canon anyways? while she's my favourite blorbo, at the end of the day she's still a blorbo in a series with well over a hundred.
in this year's popularity poll, she placed 87th. she placed higher than ichirin, at 124th. yet ichirin was playable in not just one, not just two, but three of the fighting games. wriggle placed higher than shinmyoumaru, at 91st. she placed higher than the final boss of a mainline touhou game. (admittedly ddc isn't very popular) she placed higher than mizuchi, at 136th, the literal main antagonist of a currently ongoing manga. (ok tbf who isn't higher than mizuchi)
the worst part about all this is that she didn't come from the print works that most touhou fans don't read. no, she didn't come from one of the less popular touhou games. she came from IN. the second most popular touhou game, only behind EoSD. my girl is an OG and still barely got anything more than a cameo or two here and there.
i will EXPLODE into millions of tiny bits if this goes on for a few more years. i would KILL for anything remotely wriggle-related in official works. hell, if a wriggle fumo were announced i would probably vaporise instantly. i am starving zun please save me
#touhou#wriggle nightbug#riguren rambles#i should start calling these riguren rambles its a funny name

Clearly you appreciate Sannyo the most above all, but who are some of your other favorite Touhou characters? Who's in your roster of favorites?
I absolutely adore all of Obaniwan's MMDs with the Tengu crew, so when I found out Megumu Iizunamaru-Sama's canonical personality in Lotus Eaters is, in many ways, basically the same as Obaniwan's take. I really doubled down on her. She's probably my number 2. As for other characters it's hard to narrow it down much. Of the playable characters, I tend to main playing Marisa. But I think my favorite of them might be Youmu. I guess a fun thing to do might be pick a favorite from each game.
EoSD.... Flandre. Sakuya is a close very close second.
PCB.....I already said Youmu, so Yukari.
IN.... Reisen, but I'll give Keine an honorable mention for having such insanely cool powers with a fun hat.
PoFV..... Yuuka, personality and design is awesome, and she shares a lot of the aloof flower enthusiast energy Sannyo has.
MoF..... it's Sanae. I know it's basic, and I love Kanako. But Sanae is Sanae.
SA..... Satori.
UFO... Shou. I absolutely love her. a tiger Yokai at the edge of fading away, but she's such a dedicated person her personality was compatible enough to become Bishamonten's avatar. She also just looks really cool.
TD..... Futo, with Mamizou as a close second. I love absolutely every version of futo. Fanon gremlin or canon war criminal. And Mamizou because she's Mamizou.
DDC.... Sekibanki. I'd like to say I have a better reason. But " i just think she's neat"
LoLK .... Doremy with Hecatia as a very close second. In all other regards i love them equally, but Doremy looks soft and comfy and im cold right now.
HSaFS.... Aunn... seeing Aunn in anything immediately makes me happy regardless of context.
WBaWC....Yachie, followed by Saki.. before Touhou 19 it was the reverse. In fact, I liked Kutaka slightly more than both of them. But in 19 they both got so much.. Saki got to be herself even bigger and Yachie has become extremely gap-moe. All the Animal Yakuza got developed a ton.
UM..... Sannyo..! Followed by Megumu. For the reasons I already mentioned.
UDoALG.... Enoko. Followed by Zanmu.
Enoko for being the mischievous scrapy wild doggie to compete with Aunn's cheeky good doggie energy. And Zanmu because she is aggressively cool. Like she's wearing sunglasses and puts on an additional pair of sunglasses.
From the print exclusive characters...., Kosuzu, then Miyoi, then Kasen.
Kosuzu because she's an adorable human who does dangerous Yokai things. Miyoi because she's kinda the reverse. Also Miyoi is overworked and deserves a hug. Kasen is because she is awesome and cute.
So narrowing it down my top 5 are probably..
#1 Sannyo (big surprise)
#2 Megumu
#3 Shou
#4 Youmu
#5..Yachie.... (I don't know how she got here, it just kinda happened)

I'm really sorry I managed to completely blank and forgot to write the part of the ask that would have made it a joke rather than just a random(unpleasant) statement. The idea was that as a gate guard, she is responsible for preventing the entry of any would-be intruders(Marisa) and anything they might want to do(kiss Patchouli). so the bit was like. she's preventing a yuri moment from happening.
it's so incredibly fucking funny to me that you posted the punchline but without any of the context that would have actually made it a punchline so instead you jsut came into my inbox and said that a random character from eosd would call me a slur

@alchemistdetective replied to your post “I think I mentioned it on the other blogs but have...”:
not that I know :D))
So when I first got into Touhou which was ... I guess about two years ago now. Maybe a bit less(?) I decided to check it out chiefly because one friend was a fan. But I approached it, uhhhh, maybe strange from how most people did.
At first I just looked at some funny fanart and watched some walfas videos or fan animations like rampaging sakuya(tm). Then whenever I started actually getting into it. I mainly just looked at games and manga that interested me.
So I checked out EOSD, SA, UM, read Foul Detective Satori, and chatted with folks that were way more involved in the fandom than I was. But it was all in a limited scope. For example I did not touch Ten Desires at all. My entire knowledge, up until I had made my Satori blog, of Ten Desires was just from things I vaguely picked up from fanart or overhearing others talk about it.
And from that was born: Lis's Ten Desires. A horrible misconception of what Ten Desires was about and who its cast was. It goes a little like this. Ahem
Reimu and her allies encounter a pair of mysterious priests who have traveled to Gensokyo. They are a pair of boys named Miko (elder mentor) and Futo (Priest apprentice) from China. The two are Taoist-priest exorcist cool bois that hunt evil spirits. You know. In China I guess. But they've had to travel to Gensokyo because an evil spirit that has been sealed for one thousand years has reawoken.
That evil spirit is Seiga Kaku (final boss of the game) who is a powerful ghost. That was sealed somewhere (China) but escaped her little sealing jar and escaped to Gensokyo. Reimu, Marisa, Miko, and Futo join forces to defeat her. Which eventually they do (putting her in a little jar).
But Miko and Futo find that they have become trapped within Gensokyo. So this nun lady named Byakuren helps them to find a home not far from her temple (and then I guess Miko and Byakuren kiss a lot). But also the seal on Seiga's jar isn't perfect so sometimes she pops out to bother Miko and Futo.
That's about what I thought the plot of Ten Desires was.
