SU Music Rankings

Bc I can and I wanna start some Disk Horse rip. These are all in order of preference, with explanations, etc. It’s a long bitch. That said, I’m not counting little short jingles or small joke songs like Little Butler. This is the meat and potatoes of SU music- just under 30 songs. I might do the rest if people like my takes lol.

I scored it mostly on three bases- how dear it was to my heart, how much/often I relisten to it, and also what it means to the plot. That said, little fun songs don’t automatically go farther down than big, plot-heavy songs either! It’s a strange little balance.

Special Note: I don’t dislike any of this music! I love SU and that includes its bumps and glitches. I just pick favorite children lol.

1.) Change

Was there ever a more Steven moment than when he wiped the blood off his face and kissed it into sparkles? I think not.

If “Be Wherever You Are” is an ode to young Steven, then this is teen Steven’s. Talking about change, and how much and how little it can do. How he holds his arms up for Spinel to hug him, so trusting. How he seems able to just. Break into soft tears at will, and not to be manipulative- it’s just his kind nature. The warmth in his voice. Fuck yesssss.

2.) Change Your Mind

This song is only fifty five seconds and it’s EVERYTHING to me. It really felt like someone was speaking the words I’d always held deep inside of me, unsure of how to say. It feels like a goodbye to someone who never really loved me.

As much as I enjoyed Future, if this was the finale of SU, I would’ve been perfectly okay with that.

3.) Drift Away

This song gave me legitimate shivers the first time I heard it, and it still haunts me to this day. Spinel stayed, and waited, and all she got was a transmission thousands of years later. Fuck.

4.) Here We Are In The Future

THE MOVIE IS SU AS ITS BEST AND I WON’T BE SWAYED ON IT. Steven being a teen who loves his weird family but is growing just a bit sarcastic to their drama. The adorable love he and Connie share. His slow realization that he will always be working, always have things to do, is both somber and real. The Crystal Gems won’t be safe with one epic battle. They’ll be safe with years of hard work and love. HIS LITTLE HANDSHAKE WITH AMETHYST.

This is a helluva bop and a great way to summarize the main character’s backstories.

5.) Let’s Only Think About Love

Did ya’ll know that Zach Callison killed his throat with that last note? He gave his all for this performance in a vocal range he no longer comfortably do and by god did it SHINE. The FLAIR. The FORESHADOWING. All of the Gems all being awkward about Rose and Steven trying to bring them to the present. Peridot having a mini-existential crisis in a cute yellow dress. I love Zach Callison’s normal singing voice but man is that a fucking bop. Nothing will ever beat it.

6.) Here Comes A Thought

This bad boy helped me out a LOT with some mental issues I was dealing with in high school. I was unmedicated, unsupervised, and full of anxiety. I’d have break downs when I tried to speak about certain things. I couldn’t function. This song inspired me. It helped me feel okay with my intrusive thoughts.

And the episode! -chef’s kiss-. Once again bringing up the morally gray area of training child soldiers. Connie expanding her social group. Steven’s trauma hauling ass in that second half. The ANIMATION. Stevonnie’s gorgeous singing voice. GOD yes.

7.) It’s Over Isn’t It?

Just barely squeaking above Stronger Than You, this ballad is everything gorgeous. The whole episode is. I think Mr. Greg stands in the top five of my episodes for the entire show. It even got nominated!

There’s just so much about this song that I love. The gentle melancholy of Pearl’s voice. How the crew had to redo the shots for this bit bc Deedee went so fucking hard. The hard cuts between Pearl, remembering the love of her life, and Steven, who has begun to feel like he took her away. I’d recommend this song to anyone, regardless of what they do or don’t know about SU, simply bc it tugs so many heartstrings of love, loss, and responsibility.

8.) Stronger Than You

Did you realize this episode aired SEVEN years ago? This bitch was what got me into SU! Hearing about Ruby and Sapphire made my little gay heart so happy inside, and then getting a whole song confirming that they were a couple, that their love powered the strongest Gem on the team? Aaaaaaaaa

To this DAY I get excited when I hear Estelle start singing. This song is timeless. This song will live in media history. God I fucking love this song.

9.) Other Friends

I’m not the biggest musical person, so I hadn’t heard of Sarah Stiles before her casting as Spinel, but JESUS CHRIST the lady went hard. She went SO fucking hard. Sarah Stiles started on 100 and somehow just kept CLIMBING. You can just hear the sheer manic energy building in her voice, the anger and resentment. 10/10 Sarah Stiles is a queen.

10.) Independent Together

This made the list entirely bc the crew was like “you’re gonna get a himbo ass Steven-Greg fusion singing with Opal while Garnet flies across the moon on Lion while floating” and I am forever thankful to them for it

11.) Who We Are

Bismuth deserved more songs. ‘Nuff said.

12.) Peace and Love (On the Planet Earth)

It Could’ve been Great is EASILY one of my favorite s2 episodes. I love the entire concept of this song. Of Steven making music to reflect how much Earth means to him and his family. Of him teaching Peridot some self-care. Also Peridot’s singing voice is really cute and squeaky.

I know it’s silly, but I would’ve really enjoyed a flip around of this in Future! Like Peridot reminding Steven how much he loves music, that he needs to take time to relax for himself, maybe with a new verse or just a remix of the original song!

13.) Something Entirely New

I watched this episode as it aired, and I legitimately almost cried. I love Charlyne Yi’s voice so much ya’ll- her raspy, not perfect singing voice against Sapphire’s deep soothing lull is great.

And to have Ruby and Sapphire’s meeting be the way it was- for Ruby to bemoan Sapphire losing Homeworld, to being stuck with a single Ruby, while Sapphire is a noble who has always been taught everyone in her “caste” is vitally important (and has, in her own mind, taken that to mean every Gem, as she should) and how they come together and make each other happy. Good shit good shit.

14.) I’m Just a Comet

The fact that Greg’s music career never really blasted off pisses me off to this day bc Tom Scharpling’s voice is fucking BUTTER. Also the song really feels like a jab at his parents now that we know the kind of dynamic he had growing up. “This life in the stars if all I’ve ever known” is definitely him wiping away their existence after reminding them (and himself) the things they used to say about him.

15.) Do It For Her

This episode. This fucking episode. This episode got me permanently hooked on SU. I’d just binged season 1 and was kinda meh about it overall after the bop of Stronger Than You. “Oh,” I thought to myself, foolishly, “I’ll probably just casually watch this from time to time.”

Like three days later Sworn to the Sword aired and that was it. I was hooked! Pearl’s gentle training song turning darker and darker, Connie’s accompaniment from nervous to determined to fully into such a toxic mindset. The fact that SU had the BALLS to discuss the repercussions of training child soldiers, now and later. This episode was everything to me, STILL is everything to me.

Six years and well over 100 fanfics written later, I think it’s safe to say this show swallowed me whole and never let go.

16.) System/Boot.pearl_final(3)

I debated putting this on the list because it’s not anything crazy important, just a way to show things are Wrong, but I had to do it entirely bc Pearl is so damn SALTY.

Like telling us about the Gems makes sense, she felt like she was given a duty, but she went so damn petty. WHY is that Ruby alone. Gross. This Amethyst is a trash dump. Wtf are you people.

17.) Full Disclosure

This episode really feels like a turning point for SU. Before, the show had its dark moments- but now we’re in the thick of it, and it’s not going away. Full Disclosure felt like an rebuff to the idea of returning to any normal we’d established in season 1. Gems are actually a giant species now. Gems tried to kill us now. There’s this Yellow Diamond bitch who got namedropped. Something about a Cluster.

The song itself is BALLER, with its ingenious use of Steven’s ringtone and photos as he tries to decide whether to clue in Connie on all this nonsense. Meanwhile we, the audience, already know damn well Connie about to yeet some common sense into him.

18.) What’s the Use of Feeling Blue?

I’mma admit it- I’m a Yellow Diamond stan. I’ve always loved her- her anger, her poise, her hardworking nature. I actively argued against the “Yellow Shattered Pink” theories back in the day. But, man, when this arc leaked? I got so overexcited I was too jittery to watch it for like two days. It’s easily my favorite arc of the series. The sheer alien nature of the zoo, the Famethyst, and absolutely Patti Lupone’s beautiful ballad. Goddamn. Yellow singing to Blue to try and help her regain her old status, the warble in her voice as she reminds Blue she misses Pink too, the movement of the bubbles as she talks about attack. It gives me shivers to this day. FUCK.

19.) Tower of Mistakes

This is, fun fact, that only SU song I have completely memorized. The story itself is kinda funny! See, we lost internet at my house for a solid 5 to 6 months when these episodes aired, so I only got a very brief window to view them all. But this was the first Amethyst song in a long while, and I didn’t want to forget it! So I keep replaying it in my head for ages. And that’s still definitely a thing.

Anyway will never not be sad that this entire song was about making it up to Garnet for Amethyst’s perceived slights with Sugilite (which was a two-way road), only for Garnet to pressure her into fusion later when pissed and never discuss it again bc Garnet probably never thought twice about it and Amethyst has the emotional openness of a clam that’s just been told its ugly. Helluva way to make someone feel like shit, G. Helluva way to bottle that shit, Ames.

20.) On the Run

I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a million times: Amethyst! Needed! More! Songs!

The dichotomy between Steven’s play and Amethyst’s honest desire to run away from home is so well-done, especially when you consider a lot of Steven and Amethyst’s actions are playing together. The song is also near and dear to me simply bc it’s my favorite Amethyst episode to exist (well, maybe second to What’s Your Problem, but not by much). Moments like these are all the proof I need that they were right to fuse first.

21.) Be Wherever You Are

This tune really just feels like an ode to who Steven was as a kid. Trapped on an island with no way home, and he’s just happy to be with his friends. The stars are beautiful and not oppressive. Also that one animatic with Lars and the Off Colors playing in the Homeworld Kindergarten to this music was iconic and made this song get stuck in my head for a solid month.

22.) Familiar

I ADORE how the crew use bright neon colors to show how alien Homeworld can be. And Steven recognizing that the Diamonds treat him how the CGs used to, and how prepared he is to “fix” a broken family. It’s a soft, gentle tune about melancholy. Also the Pebbles are beautiful.

23.) Let Me Drive My Van Into Your Heart

Such a cute little love ballad, but every time I listen to it now I just imagine the heart attack Rose must’ve had at the line “And if we look out of place/Well, baby, that's okay/I'll drive us into outer space.” like there’s a Vietnam war flashback if I ever heard one

24.) What Can I Do?

I’m kind of neutral on this one? Rose and Greg both have great voices, but the song itself lacks many lyrics. I think it was definitely a good way to show Rose’s flaws in thinking.

Also, I’m shocked they managed cram that much vaguely sexual innuendo into two minutes, followed by how Not Hetereo that dance between Rose and Pearl was, and not get their asses chewed by it. You go guys.

25.) Cookie Cat

I love a lot of the vibes this song has. The lyrics are so damn prophetic, but they also sound like the kind of weird 90s commercials I grew up on. It’s been like two decades since I saw the Shirley Temple commercial but I’ll be damned if I don’t remember “Animals crackers in my soup! Monkey and rabbits loop-de-loop.”

26.) Giant Woman

I am. NOT the biggest fan of Steven’s original singing voice. I feel bad saying that, since it was just Zach Callison as a kid, but he never jived well with me for some reason. So I wouldn’t listen to this on the fly.

The song itself is still really good though, with all sorts of fun animation of Amethyst and Pearl being bitchy to each other. It’s a bit sad in hindsight to see tiny Steven trying to get his moms to get along. Ahh, season 1.

27.) Strong in the Real Way

This song has SUCH a strong start. Pearl reflecting on Sugilite’s problems, but the show making sure to show us that Pearl’s lack of enthusiasm towards her also lends itself to jealousy as well as just general malaise. How much she cares about Steven, and wants him to grow up strong.

And then Steven just kinda. Ruins it? I appreciate his enthusiasm for tryna bulk up but to take what was starting as such a rich, personal song and broadcasting it to random strangers just makes me a bit sad. Almost a bit angry on her behalf?

28.) That Distant Shore

I KNOW this is gonna create some discourse, but I’m just not the biggest Lapis stan. I love her voice. I love the visuals of the song. And I get why she felt afraid and needed to flee.

But Lapis never got to take responsibility for her own actions. And, in the end, the song feels hollow to me- because we all know she’ll never talk to anyone about it, know she’ll burst back in and destroy the barn, and no one will ever question it. I like Lapis a lot, but I feel like her arc never was fully finished. She never got help. She never learned to feel safe.

29.) Dear Old Dad

I’ve yet to meet a single human being who likes this episode tbh. There’s some great discussion about what kind of parent Greg is from it, and what kind of dynamic he has with the Gems that he felt he had to fake an injury to hang out with his son. Honestly the first half was fine and dandy. It’s just that then they Greg just went out of his way to drag Steven away from missions and such. It never jived well with his character before or after.

Also, is it just me, or does Zach himself sound like he hates the song as he sings it? There’s no passion or heart in his voice. It sounds like they told him to read off cue cards and he did. Tom Scharpling’s best attempts didn’t save this one for being a skipper. But the episode, unfortunately, isn’t, so it gets a spot on here.

Blackwall: 80s-90s Dad rock. Ac/dc, aerosmith, metallica, if your dad listened to it, so did he. i also think a tasteful spattering of johnny cash and he wouldnt tell anyone but he really likes jimmy buffet.

Cassandra: Actually nothing. Unlike Solas, she actually cant focus with music going so she just doesnt.

Cole: * slaps head * this boy can fit so much projection. Jack stauber absolutely. I know what i said in my last post but lemon demon. Will wood and the Scary Jokes perhaps. Anything noisy and crunchy to block out thoughts. when ah ah too many thoughts classical music. Clair de lune on repeat. goes down weird music genre rabbit holes a lot. right now its megolovania remixs and vocaloid. Has a soft spot for emo music because look at that boy and tell me he didnt have an emo phase. I also think Mitski but only Be the Cowboy. Maybe the minecraft soundtrack because god i love the minecraft soundtrack. unlike dorian he has my 100% pure music taste.

Cullen: Also has really dad taste in music but country dad. (he strikes me as a very country boy idk like if he didn’t have the ferelden accent he would absolutely have a southern accent and i stand by that) Billy joel, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Probably also likes Johnny Cash.

Dorian: Probably typical gay music gaga, queen, brittany spears, kylie minouge. Has a Deep love of girlboss country. Can rock the fuck out to Carrie Underwood and Dolly Parton. His brand of music to me is just girlboss music yk?? Probably also really likes Megan Thee Stallion and Nicki Minaj. yw for not just giving him my taste in music ~a dorian kinnie

Iron Bull: No real preference. He just listened to whatever’s on. Is insane and just listens to all his liked songs on shuffle. Probably likes heavier stuff tho, behemoth, Gojira, Venom. He probably also listens to punk but less than Sera.

Josephine: Now she definitely listens to french jazz. (i really like old french jazz) Listens to most radio pop. Definitely cried while listening to Sour despite never having a breakup. Definitely has an emotional support Lady Gaga album. just very happy pop-y vibes.

Leliana: She gives me massive Kinzie Kensington vibes so every vibe in my body is saying DMX, Old Kanye, Snoopdog, but my bones tell me.. old french jazz, josephine baker, Édith Piaf, Charles Trenet. but also Florence and the Machine and Mitski. so. Take your pick.

Sera: Chaos. Anything loud and noisy. I can imagine she listens to almost exclusively punk, Dead Kennedy’s, Carnivore, Gwar, etc. When not listening to punk, Gorillaz, Pat the Bunny In quieter moments she probably listens to Penelope Scott, Rio Romeo, maybe the Scary Jokes?? idk that may be pushing it. MAYBE hobo johnson and the love makers. big maybe in that one tho.

Solas: Nothing. Music is too distracting or some excuse. in actuality he just listens to game ost’s from games he’s never played. Mostly orchestral things. I only listen to the stardew valley and hylics 2 soundtracks so i have no examples.

Vivienne: Im having a very hard time pinning down Viv. I want to say oldies, Dion and the Belmonts, the Marvelettes, Nancy Sinatra. But also classical music? I have no idea.

i recently read the traitor baru cormorant (and sequels) as well as the teixcalaan duology and those are two very similar books about two sort of similar characters (outsiders attempting to carve out some sort of space for themselves inside of an empire, connivers and schemers, crazy gay bitches) with just one very key difference between them that really creates the whole story. baru hates the empire & mahit really, really loves it

baru (the titular character and protagonist of the baru cormorant books) despises the empire, is intimately familiar with its evils, and really wants to dismantle it! her quest to dismantle the empire (or at least lay the seeds for its destruction) drives the narrative forward- she duels agents of the empire on like the mental battleground. etc etc. she also to keep hold of herself, her culture, her ties to the people she loves. and of course she also wrestles with the notion of empire as a force of nature, in a very capital R Romantic sense- baru is enthralled by the power that empires have, the elegant machinery that keeps them running, the precision with which that power is wielded, and by the inevitability of that power. there’s a lot to say on the subject but the driving conflicts in the books fall out of baru’s hatred & fascination with the Evil Empire. (which is, to oversimplify it drastically, just england remixed)

mahit, by contrast, finds the empire fascinating- she’s obsessed with its stories, its poetry, its television, its language- etc etc. she spends most of the books wrestling with her simultaneous desire to really, really belong to the Evil Empire (which is in this case, giving it all the nuance it actually has, a smashed up version of the byzantine empire, the aztec empire, and sort of the USA?) and her desire to preserve the culture and identity of her people, going hand in hand with her desire to preserve her own identity and ties to her culture. mahit struggles to find a way to be both of the empire and of her people. a really interesting story where viewed from the perspective of any of her people mahit is absolutely the villain for all that. it’s about cultural hegemony

all that to say that i read a review of baru cormorant by arkady martine (the author of the teixcalaan series) and the review was generally good- her biggest problem with baru, as said by arkady martine, was that she found the evil empire in baru cormorant to be unrealistically evil. she essentially said that it was difficult to understand what anyone within this world found appealing about this empire- and to her credit, mx dickinson focuses on the truly heinous parts of what an empire does. the ‘good’ parts are mentioned, but not really focused on- and i think that’s a really interesting pull but also like totally expected after reading arkady martine’s work. it’s really fascinating! i think dickinson clearly had the upper hand in terms of nuanced portrayals of Evil Empires, while arkady martine’s Evil Empire is simultaneously too good in some ways and too evil in others. (arkady martine also ofc has a doctorate in byzantine history, and has written on byzantine cultural imperialism.)

the falcresti (the evil empire of baru cormorant) use tactics which are in almost all cases directly lifted from the things that empires have done historically as a method of wiping out and ‘converting’ colonized peoples. none of it is shied away from, the evil acts are seen in great detail. the falcresti also bring sanitation procedures, medicine, sewers, schools, and a huge body of science to their colonized peoples. of course, much of that is colored by the fact that said ‘science’ is constructed (as real actual science has often been constructed) so that it reinforces falcresti doctrine and justifies falcresti power. most of the story takes place far away from the imperial core- and it’s worth noting that several times we are told citizens in the imperial core live wonderful rich lives, and that the ugly doctrines of hygiene (scientifically reinforced homophobia, misogyny, racism, etc) don’t make much of a difference to them. these things have the greatest impact on the outskirts of the empire, where the empire is in the process of expanding. so we see all the ugly stuff.

by contrast, mahit’s story takes place right in the heart of teixcalaan for the most part, and then also for a brief time on the empire’s flagship, negotiating with a hostile species. she is never really on the outskirts of the empire except for when she is at home on her station, which is technically not part of the empire! we see that the way the empire enforces its power on that people is by cultural exports- attempting to make them culturally teixcalaanitzli in order to ‘civilize’ them. it’s implied that the empire fights conquest wars, but we don’t see them. it’s also implied that the empire is vigilant in policing its own citizens for any hints of sedition, but we don’t see that either. it’s implied that the police will brutalize the populace, though this also happens mostly off-screen. there is exactly one (1) riot in that book which is between competing civilian factions, and does not significantly impact mahit. it’s also really difficult to imagine in what way teixcalaan is civilizing people! the biggest upside of teixcalaan ‘civilizing’ a place seems to just be connecting them to everyone else- only teixalaanitzli citizens can freely access the body of teixcalaanitzli information and art which exists out there. there’s a special internet for teixcalaan only. the ‘upside’ to empire in martine’s books just seems to be like that sometimes they are very, very, very elegant and beautiful. the downside is that they will try to stamp out your culture in as non-agressive a way as possible. they seem so flat to me!

there’s kind of underlying thread which martine (despite obviously being a very smart writer and talented) doesn’t really pick at either- and maybe i just got spoiled reading baru cormorant where dickinson finds very elegant ways to express what it is that imperial powers actually do and what for. but there’s an aspect of control there- the teixcalaan seek to wipe out the individual, to make everyone think in the same way and do the same things. but that isn’t picked at! and there was really ample room for it! also there’s so much to say and this post is already sooo long but i found myself a little frustrated by the harmless way that the teixcalaan (and darling three seagrass) were presented... well there’s more things to say

A/N: Hey again! I have no idea where this fic is gonna go but this is for someone on the Sali Discord, combining two concepts together. This is an AU but also kinda divergent? Sang-woo made a fuck ton of money gambling his mother's house and actually is successful at his job. Be warned it gets kinda raunchy really quick but I'm not gonna guarantee that in every chapter haha. Hope you enjoy. I also wanted to thank Inorganic_soot for helping me out with Urdu

Chapter 1: Dear I Fear We’re Facing A Problem

“I guess I’ll try to explain myself. This is sort of new for me…”

Sang-woo was not a man who often went on these types of sites. Gi-hun, one of his long-time friends, had mentioned it in passing while they were drinking.

“They do anything for you as long as you give them money. I wish I had some.”

Anything? Well that was not true… Sang-woo looked up what Only’s was and saw that these people would perform for their donors, with some limits that the user decided. He tried to browse the interface but quickly found it frustrating. Sang-woo had sneered, losing interest and then switching his attention to something he actually was interested in, the market. He yawned, going through threads and smirking at those who claimed to know “insider knowledge” on the stocks, replied to a couple of questions but then became… distracted. One link went to another and another and soon he found himself looking at something interesting. The specific amateur gay tag on the Korean forum board he frequented had a boy that had posted about three days ago. It had some engagement and he could see why.

Interesting… Sang-woo’s eyes gazed at the boy's face. He was very attractive, but was not of Korean descent. He was brown, and looked like he shaved. His eyes were large, adding to his cute boyish charm, but what interested Sang-woo most was that he had a nice body. He was built, and showed it off. In the picture it seemed like he was naked, the picture cutting off at his waist. He had a gentle smile. The way he coyly looked at the camera, while his black locks fell across his face, peaked his interest. So here he was, subscribed to this boy on this shittily designed website for at least a month. But there was no real harm… it cost about twelve thousand won. He would end the subscription next month. He watched the kid fidget and smile nervously at the camera while he sipped on his favorite whisky.

“I kinda got into trouble… Last month…” He said. His voice was very pleasant, soft and gentle, like a wave gently lapping against his body. Sang-woo didn’t do it much, but it did make him smile. He’s very cute. He thought to himself. “I… I…” He sighed and looked away from the camera. “My wife divorced me. Honestly, I think she was in the right too. ” Sang-woo raised an eyebrow, taking another swig of whisky. Were these people always this vulnerable? Seemed like a lot to be emotionally dumping on a site made for this kind of thing. He was in the ameature tag though. “Well, I got this to q we get to know myself a bit better. I feel like I need to do better with exploring my wants and it doesn't hurt to make money on the side! Right? The next day was a rather distracting one, before he could even get to work, he got emails from clients, two extremely tedious ones that would take some time to address and one from his boss, informing him of a meeting they were going to have that morning. He let out an aggrieved sigh, the urge to smoke gnawing at the back of his head. He hated the meetings as they often took long because his boss loved to hear himself talk. It was also guaranteed to be something boring. He looked at his watch as the train he was on stopped and exited the train car, suitcase in hand. He approached the building he was working in a matter of minutes. It was a beautiful glass and metal building, fifteen stories tall. He was on the tenth floor. He began planning out his day mentally. First I’ll make some coffee so I can think clearly and I should have time to look over some paperwork for Mr.Yoon. I need to get that out of the way so I can not fall asleep through this damn meeting. He yawned, nodded to security who gave him a short wave as he signed in someone and pressed the elevator button. The elevator might have take three minutes to get down while Sang-woo tapped his foot impatiently. It opened and he walked in and pressed the button ten. The doors began to close but then he heard a voice call out to him.

“Excuse me! Please hold the door!”

Shit. He briefly glanced at his watch, before grabbing the closing doors. The doors stopped and began to open again and he heard a relieved sigh before a short boy came inside.

“Thank you, Sir!” He was greeted with a warm smile, before he leaned over to press the button fifteen. He was a lot shorter… only up to his chest. He turned around to stand next to Sang-woo, humming softly while he checked his phone. Sang-woo stared for a moment, his mind froze.

Small world…

“Ah… are you new here?” The boy looked up at him, raising an eyebrow curiously.

“Oh…” He said hesitantly. “Why?”

“Sorry, I didn’t mean anything by it.” Sang-woo said easily. “I just haven’t seen you around here.” The boy tilted his head.

“Yeah, uh, Sir… I got a new job here.” He said this rather sheepishly, but he could see his trademark gentle smile.

“Well, congradulations.”

“Thank you!” The boy turned to him, pushing black hair out of his face. He did not miss the way his bright brown eyes darted up and down. Sang-woo pretended not to notice, turning his eyes back to the door of the elevator and swaying the upward movement. “I’m excited to start.”

“What will you do?”

“Oh, nothing too complicated. I will be helping keep the building clean.” He shrugged.

“Ah. I hope you do well.” There was a small silence in which the door opened on floor five when no one was there. As the door slowly closed, his voice piped up again. “What do you do here?”

“Oh…” Sang-woo thought for a moment, glancing at the florectent lights on above them. “I work at a financial firm here.”

“Yeah?”

“Yes, I deal in trade of stocks and futures.” He glanced down just in time to see the boy’s eyes light up in recognition.

“Hm… I know of someone who does that. Is it hard?”

“It can be stressful.” He let out a low sigh, with a small smile. “But I find it rewarding enough.”

“He says he enjoys the work as well. He was trying to explain things to me...but I think it’s way past my understanding, unfortunately.”

“I’m sure you could learn if someone taught you.” Sang-woo said evenly, but the boy shook his head.

“I don’t think so.” He rubbed his head, biting his tongue as he smiled at him with a goofy grin. “Numbers and I do not do well.” The elevator by this time pinged softly and the door opened on level ten. Sang-woo turned to smile at the boy who was still grinning at him.

“Have a great day, then.”

“Yes, you too!” Sang-woo stepped out of the elevator turning his back on the boy, walking toward his office.

“It was very nice meeting you, Moon.”

He felt a terrible yank on his suit and turned around to see a hand gripping it. His eyes moved slowly to the boyish face now looking grave. His messy hair almost seemed to raise like an anxious dog. He glared at Sang-woo as the elevator closed.

“Excuse me, Sir, what did you call me?”

this wasn't her plan, it just wasn't. she wanted to regain what she lost, catch up with what she missed. she wanted her friends, she wanted "her" friends. was this really what she wanted?

she lied to herself and said yes, this is what i wanted, but she knew it really wasn't; it felt so forced to her, to want it.

Second, why still jikook shippers exist when jimin & jungkook was barely communicate. The fact, we can't ignore that, jimin & Jungkook avoid each other. Something between them was not good. I really miss their genuine interaction. Other hand Jk seems normal with other members. WHY?

👀 Ok but I'm really doing my best here 😒

There's literally 400 plus unanswered Asks in my inbox. If I answered one Ask each day it will still take like a whole year to clear my inbox and there will still be some unanswered Asks sitting in there.

Besides, I think I have answered this exact question? I have said I believe Jikook experienced a hiccup in their relationship between October and November last year post JM's birthday but I don't believe they broke up. Not sure how many times you want me to repeat that.

Most of the content with 'no interaction' and 'tension' between them were filmed around the same period within this timeline.

I will uploading a blog on that timeline soon. I have a rough draft of it sitting in my drafts somewhere. I've been answering a lot of Asks lately and I just haven't had time to write an actual blog post. Sigh.

Why Jikook Shippers still exist...

I ask myself this question every single day darling- why do people still ship Jikook when Jikook is more than a ship? They should be supporting them not just shipping them.

Also, I don't think real Jikook supporters support Jikook just because they interact. Those are the shippers. The trad shippers as I like to call them. I support Jikook because they are queer first and foremost and secondly because they are in love with eachother.

Just because they 'don't interact' in a moment, on camera, don't make them all of a sudden straight. It doesn't work like that.

Jimin is my bias and I know beyond a shadow of doubt he is queer. I love him more for it. I really love him more for it. You have no idea. I am not going to withdraw my support for him as an LGBTQ plus member in a conservative space just because he isn't interacting on camera with another member. That's just silly.

The love between them isn't going anywhere anytime soon. As long as they both want it and they both go out of their way to nurture it, it will always be there. I think that's what you should be paying attention to- whether or not they are nurturing their bond outside their interactions on camera during this period.

Because if they are not, then that's when they will become a real fanservice ship. No shade to a certain ship💀

JIMIN AND JK AVOID EACHOTHER. WHY?

Jokes aside, I see what you mean. But I keep saying Jikook are not broken up. It hasn't been smooth sailing all 7 years you know- ok take a few years. I don't think it will be either going forward either.

Jikook are not jikooking all the time. It's part of the contract they have with us. Lol. Sometimes it's because they are having relationships problems, other times it's their environment, a producer they ain't vibing with, bad hair day, the members getting on their nerves- a myriad of reasons Anon. A ton. I can only speculate. Could be anything from a break up to a lost change. Know what I mean?

They do have issues from time to time. They are human too. Sometimes they hide it behind smiles and perform knock off versions of their bond for us.

Other times they choose not to perform their bond, especially if whatever they are dealing with is serious- if it is, they set boundaries and respect eachother's boundaries to allow them to emotionally process and deal.

Most times too they push and poke at eachother's boundaries till the other cave. Especially if one of them feel whatever is getting in their way is a trivial issue.

During Jin's birthday VLive in December, they sounded a lot like they were enjoying eachother's company to me- apart from the part JM was throwing shade at us left right left, I didn't sense any tension between them then.

All we did was call you 'a liar' once and now you just keep rubbing your relationship in our face?😥 You really didn't have to tell us you were with Jungkook when Jin put you on speaker.😒 You really didn't. Their moments at GDA and the end of year award shows were equally telling of the state of their relationship.

In some content post Grammy you could see them hanging in the background playing games and what not.

Arriving together at KBS in the same car at 5am, leaving set together at 1am and heading lord knows where- cough, Itaewon.

Then this happened... was JK high? Chilee.

Like I know my bias is sexy and fine but JK you don't have to be scanning him like that😭

I've been saying, Jikook 'relax' in certain contents, act serious in others- as they should. They literally had the GMA performance before this shoot and people were screaming there was tension between them and what not and that JK seemed mad at Jimin. Mad bunny where?! Lmho.

The 'less open' one in that performance was JM not JK. To me. I felt he was putting up a tough exterior, acting like he don't kiss ass in that time period. Not sure if it was the haircut or his inner shadow hunter but something had shifted in him. Lol.

You could tell JK really wanted to show off their bond and chemistry in that event, and had perhaps wanted JM to engage like he'd done with him in previous performances?

But JM wasn't doing none of that for whatever reason- No, I don't think it was because he was mad at JK.

He just wasn't on his Jikook agenda.

They enjoy eachother and when they get lost in a moment it's usually for them not us. But they know and are well aware we like their bond and we love to see it. You'd often hear them, JM especially, ask the fans if they like certain moments especially after he's interacted with JK in a certain way or shared certain intimate details about their relationship with fans at fansigns.

They troll us, they tease us, they include us in certain moments- Jk deliberatly stealing JM's tear stained tissue( a reenactment of a popular Korean sitcom where a creepy ass lady stole her crushes used tissue to convey she adored him) him pointing at JM to indicate he desires JM, slowly taking off his shirt while holding JM's gaze, the you are me, I am you, what's tasty in Busan and all these other moments.

They each have their own Jikook agenda. But they are both not always in on it. Sometimes JM has no idea what JK is up to, other times it's JK who's clueless. Like the Holiday remix video where JK bolted after that intense fanservice moment with JM.

I don't think he knew JM was going to do what he did. It was shock and desire rolled into one for him. I just know it. Lmho.

As I said, the director probably had whispered something in JM's ear and had asked him to give them a moment.

JK was probably having wedding dreams flashbacks. His entire Itaewon gay future flashed before his eyes. I'm dead. Lmho.

Jk'd initiate in moments where JM wasn't initiating (during performances) and he'd bump shoulders or just shamelessly wrap his hands around Jimin and have a moment.

Same energy from JK different periods in the timeline- one before Grammy, one after.

May be you should be paying close attention to the things they do when they 'don't interact?' What they do when they do interact. Who initiates, whether the other reciprocates or not etc? The setting and environment equally counts as well.

Literally these two contents were filmed on the same day but half the fandom was screaming there was something off with Jikook in one just because Jikook didn't touch eachother.

JK was hesitating to initiate skinship with JM in one content, but didn't in the other- on the same day. What gives??

Contents filmed with Suga, Tae in dark hair, JM with an undercut were all filmed after 11th October and before 3rd November when Suga had his Surgery.

Content with JM in blue hair were filmed after 24th November.

JK's mood was pretty consistent to me till the pop up in late October, the holiday remix filmed after 3rd November but before Grammy, the Grammy reaction on 24th November and the recent run which was also filmed after Grammy where he seemed mostly closed off to JM's Jikook agenda- do you see what I mean when I say all those moments on 'tension' you and others mention were filmed within the same period?

Jimin's reaction has equally been consistent, going from putting up a tough exterior to being mellow and somewhat humbled or subdued.

Make of it what you will.

Not sure what you mean by genuine interactions. I think you have to embrace all aspects of them and their relationship. They have 'genuine' moments, they have fan service moments, they have good days, they have bad days. Sometimes they don't interact at all.

It's ok to miss them. But don't demand that they change or interact in a certain way to suit your shipping desires. That's dangerous.

They are human.

A Letter to AO3, From a MCYT Fan

Around two days ago, the Last Life SMP fandom found the Last Life (Web Series) tag. We thought it was a symbol of change with AO3--did we finally break crack the code when it comes to MCYT? Did AO3 finally recognise MCRP as separate to RPF? Would all RP servers be tagged as (Web Series) now?--but we soon realised that we were wrong. Instead, we found out that it was a dead fandom's tag, and we had flooded it with works. We didn't mind, however--we continued, and there was no harm, no foul, since no Last Life writers told us to stop. Now, however, Last Life (Web Series) redirects to Video Blogging (RPF).

Perhaps we were too gleeful in cheating the system. I can understand the need to separate out two different fandoms (Last Life and Last Life SMP are different), but this entire situation reveals a problem with you: you are not listening. Your categorisation of MCYT as RPF is a pattern.

By changing Last Life to redirect to RPF and all types and servers in Minecraft, you are indirectly saying that you know better than us. You are telling us that you know better—in your mind, you know that what we are writing is RPF, despite our pleading and the constant clarifications made by content creators (Scott Smajor’s statements on stream, GeminiTay’s ‘role play’ label in her Empires SMP series, clarifying YouTube comments made by Last Life SMP members, Dream SMP lore streams being labelled as 'LORE'). In reality, you are not listening. You are being just as unwilling to listen as the fanfiction websites that came before.

It’s the same gripe we, as fans, have with your character tags. Real life names are used instead of character tags. TommyInnit is Tom Simmons, MumboJumbo is Oliver Brotherhood, and Grian is Charles | Grian. Technoblade's real name used to be on AO3, too, before he asked for it to be taken down. Instead of changing all of the character tags when he asked, however, you redirect those that don't include their real names to the overarching tags that do. You go through all of the effort of wrangling all MumboJumbo/Mumbo related tags to Oliver Brotherhood, without giving us what we want: searchable character names, instead of real people's names.

Instead, we come up with haphazard solutions. Fics are sorted underneath 'fandom collections', such as the 3rd Life SMP Fanfic Collection. Fics are circulated on Tumblr, with links to AO3. We retype the tags to use the characters' In-Game Names instead of the Video Blogging one. We type ships over and over again until they don't include the creator's real names; we use the tag 'Not RPF' on almost all of our fics or add disclaimers. Organising this is hell on Earth, but we do it, because that's what we have to to use AO3 for our fics, and use the tagging method.

This is a pattern: we, as fans, ask for change, and you tell us no. With Last Life's tag changed, it created a precedent: you will, under no circumstances, listen to your users. This issue is no longer negligence, and hasn't been for a while; instead, it is deliberate. The 'our' in Archive of Our Own is exclusive to those who aren't MCRP fans and/or don't use Minecraft as a storytelling method.

The solution is simple, really. Listen to us when we tell you to separate Video Blogging (RPF) from MCRP. Listen to us when we tell you to separate SMPs out as their own fandoms, making them all searchable tags. Listen to us when we ask you to not use the real, full names of content creators. Listen to us when we ask you to change and adapt.

Listen to your users. That is all we’re asking.

Okay, time for my weekly rant so buckle up. The vocal stages were okay-I cant really remember them well because I watched them only once so take what I say with a grain of salt. Well I watched the Spark one once and I only got through half of the other one because I can’t stand ballads especially when there’s no interesting movement on stage to keep me engaged. Like it’s no fault of the members themselves or the song (I actually think their singing was incredibly beautiful and Eunkwang always sings like his wife just left him with the kids which is how you know he’s good) but I physically could not pay attention. That’s why I liked the spark stage a bit better-there was enough movement that I was able to focus on it. I really liked the use of the fire and the way they were walking in and out of the frame trading off parts so there weren’t too many awkward moments where the other members where on stage but not doing anything. The opening was gorgeous with each members being lit by the spotlight as they harmonize. So stagewise, I prefer Spark but vocally I think the other group was stronger. I love Spark and Taeyon is such an incredible vocalist (I mean the song is great because of her) so I don’t get why their delivery was, I don’t want to say weak, but subdued might be a better word. The only one that really stood out was Junhoe (but also that man couldn’t not stand out even if he tried, not with that incredibly rasp) and even he seemed to be holding himself back a bit. Though it was a bit slow it built up well to the two last choruses but still the first half could have been stronger. I know they were trying to draw it out to a strong pay off but I don’t really know if it was enough. And yes the suits were *chef’s kiss*. I think at this point in their career the FNC stylist has put SF9 in so many suits they’ve got it down to a science. Also I’m a sucker for those shirts with the triangle cut out and we got not one but two of them here.

Okay moving on, I’m not sure which group was next but I’ll talk about the Ikon stage. It seems like they finally realized that they’re on a performance based competition show so they decided to pull out the big guns. Love the little skit at the beginning (making sure people don’t forget that they’re YG), it was cute and refreshing. I really appreciated how they leaned into the campy acting in this stage (Stray kids did it too-just adding to the similarities between their stages). The song was meh but I also don’t really like BP especially not their recent stuff so it’s not a big deal. I would have preferred if they had gone with another song maybe Whistle or As If It’s Your Last or if they’d done a 2NE1 song like Chanwoo mentioned some point in the episode. I also think the stage would have been way smoother if they’d let Ikon and Lisa interact. Like if the boys appeared in her set after her section and then they all moved back to the first jungle set and then the whole thing turns gold and they did a dramatic outfit change (but with better jackets because theirs look like they came out of Party City). I also get what you mean about the dancers outfits not being that great. I actually really liked the outfits of Lisa’s dancers in isolation but they didn’t match with her or the set so they threw me off a bit. At least with the ikon members they were going for a modern look so the dancers outfits didn’t look that strange in comparison. Do you think it would have been better if they were white? How would you have improved then? The best way I can describe this performance was that it was a stage, stuff happened, I enjoyed myself but I don’t plan to revisit it anytime soon. Oh and we also have to give points for them cursing on national television not once but twice (at this point Jinwan deserves to say fuck).

Now to Stray Kids. So I feel like I need to preface this with the fact that I am actually a stray kids fan (I won’t call myself a stay because I don’t associate with the fandom) and though I’ve been really critical of them and their stages tend to be my least favorite I still have a soft spot for them (I got into this show because of them after all). I loved, loved, loved the intro with Felix (and yes his biggest flaw is that he’s Australian but I forgive him for it) and the way it immediately transitions into the chorus of DDD-the abrupt transition does fit really well with the Deadpool theme and I guess it is the closest they’re going to get to the feeling of yeeting themselves into traffic like in the movie. Interesting choice to start with the chorus. Now that I’m rewatching it I do really wish they stuck with the comic theme. I think that’s my gripe with SKZ-they have a lot of good ideas but they move on too quickly from them. Just pick a handful of things and sprinkle them throughout instead of cycling through them at breakneck speed. Like okay they’re doing Deadpool and he’s a comic character so keep the comic styling (it would have been a good thing to put in the projection behind Seungmin’s scene), maybe in the subway they could have had some fight choreo so the guns coming in at Lee Knows part aren’t out of nowhere (also someone please tell me they were trying to recreate the meme with the cat and the knives, please I need to know). I absolutely agree that them having a goal or an antagonist would have really helped the story along. I mean they literally have a spoken intro so why couldn’t Felix just tell us who they were fighting (and I’m pretty sure in the movie Wade tells us he’s trying to kill Francis in that scene sooo). As always they put more focus on the rappers (please can we get less Changbin and more Seungmin, Jeongin, or Lee Know or at least give Felix more parts). Seungmin was the real mvp of this stage and he had the best outfit (I think it qualifies for Hanya’s best gay little outfit list). Personally I with they hadn’t gone with Gods Menu again. I’ve been hoping that they would perform My Pace (and maybe remix it with their B-side TA off their Go Live album) because that would be such a fun stage. Again, I enjoyed myself but I won’t revisit it anytime soon. At this point the only groups I actually look forward to are BTOB and SF9 (they’re doing fucking Move and I don’t know whether to be excited or terrified-there’s a clip of Taeyang covering Move from a variety show or interview and I think he does it really well so I know at least one of them can pull it off). i think you wrote more than me!! i love this, im gonna put my response under a cut im not being super obnoxious on the dash.

i get that the mayfly stage would be not as visually stimulating for people and usually i would count myself in with that crowd because i love a good spectacle but i think because i watched the spark stage first and my colour perception is sometimes weird so when there's a lot of movement with very little colour variation my tiny pea brain loses track of whats happening really quickly. especially with red. so it was kind of difficult for me to pay attention to the spark stage in the second half. also i absolutely HATE watching people flub on stage because it brings up such visceral secondhand feelings that i couldn't even watch the stage when i started the full episode today.

i love a good suit but you know what i would also love: sf9 in more costume variations. tbh im just getting nitpicky about it because im a costume designer down to the core and i got trained by a designer who specialized in doing avant garde costuming so i tend to skew more towards wild than reserved. it looks like the move stage wont be be suits so ill take it, but oh man to do i want to see some really crazy stuff. which i know they'll never do because idols have to be pretty at all times or the fans get mad but oh i want it so badly.

do you mean how i would improve ikon's backup dancers outfits or lisa's? here why dont i do both. for lisa's dancers i would have just done away with that harness shape all together, its almost exclusively a military style. the jackets by themselves would have been fine but really what they should have done was put them in something that matched the gold but contrasted enough to give them shape. by having at least her dancers in all black on a gold stage there was a lot of "haha look at me do a duck walk because lets throw in some voguing for spice." they could have gone with a mesh bodysuit idea similar to what she was wearing or even just different colour coats. as for ikon's backup dancers, firstly pants. not black. or even a longer skirt. genuinely a part of the reason why i dont watch girl group content is because i HATE the hem length of the shorts they make everyone wear. words cannot describe how much i hate that cut. kpop is so obsessed with showing off women's bodies and especially their legs but they do it in the LEAST flattering way possible because it "can't be too risqué," just shoot me now. i hate it. i hate it so fucking much. yea yea everybody was on cocaine in the 80s whatever but at least they were all wearing french cut bodysuits so their legs looked fantastic. stop interrupting the lines!! anyways. pants so the only section of skin showing is thigh to mid calf, especially because they weren't even doing any fun legwork! if they really wanted to keep the full sleeve bodysuits they shout have done them in a fabric with a texture or external embellishments, like a patent/vinyl or sequins/rhinestones. something to catch the stage lights so we can actually see the shape of the limb. but the easiest way to fix it is literally just cut the arms off the bodysuits. stages are lit to show off skin, sometimes the best way to have something be seen is just to have it bare.

i agreed skz cycles through ideas way too fast, they need to just pick a couple and stick them out through the stage instead of just adding more and more different ones throughout. also ok good someone else noticed that there is just...so much changbin. we don't need that much changbin. i know there's other boys in the group let them do something! also im pretty sure theyre not recreating the cat knife meme but actually the promo image from john wick chapter two, which i also could have sworn i saw a deadpool version of as an instagram ad back when movies were happening, but now that im looking for it it doesn't exist so i might be crazy.

im excited for the move stage but im also trepidatious because...its move. i have NO clue what the concept is from the previews so i just hope its weird enough to take it enough out of the taemin context for me to enjoy it.

I forget, do we ever see Jerry in vampire bat form or do we just see him as Chris Sarandon with fangs the entire movie?

Doesn’t the whole “enter with permission” count with bedrooms too or just the house in general? If it counted with bedrooms, couldn’t Charley just put up a sign on his door that said “NO ADMISSION WITHOUT PERMISSION” and that would keep Jerry out?

Jerry is the most casual vampire I’ve seen so far. Someone would just throw a chair at him and he’ll just No-Sell it like “Listen... I was just saying...”

There’s got to be a logical way to explain this Christmas thing.

The logic for this movie is something else. Charley sees someone on TV perform a vampire killing ON A TV SHOW and thinks “YES I’m going to ask him to help me with this vampire situation!”

This is like asking Drew Carey if he can assist in a vampire hunting

Also I absolutely forgot about the weird side plot with Amy being an incarnation of a past love. What is it with this and Bram Stoker’s Dracula going this route?

Man, Roddy McDowall is just a masterclass in classical acting. You can tell the different style between him and the other actors.

The overhead tracking shot following Ed in the alleyway is actually pretty good. And the way it slides to a normal shot is great.

And that movie also had a weird homoerotic tone to it.

You know what, the way Jerry offers Ed salvation only to attack him was actually pretty solid. Just good acting from both of them. I was sold.

Why do Jerry’s dance clothes look like either my pajamas or really lame exercise clothes?

They would be that duo who would pick up a phone and take turns to go “...surprise, Sidney...”

*A wolf walks out of Mrs. Brewster’s room* WHAAAAATTT?!?

Dang they really just tossed a plushie wolf off the stairs

WAIT the guy that did the VFX for this movie also did “Ghostbusters” if I remember correctly

They are just... really dragging out Ed’s death scene

That kinda exasperated look Peter gives the smoking house is great

Wait is Billy a vampire too? Zombie? What is he?

I really just want Charley to reach out and just slightly poke dying Billy in the chest so that he crumbles backwards. That would have been hilarious.

How long is Amy’s hair?

HE [Jerry] DOES TURN INTO A BAT!

Real plot twist would be that the bat bite also starts turning Charley into a vampire so Peter would have to kill three birds with one stone (heal Charley and Amy and kill Jerry)

Boss move: Peter closing the coffin in front of Jerry

And it ends with the same shot as the opening!

“Oh, you’re so cool, Brewster.” So is Ed alive?
