3: Nora: I-it’s not that I can’t sympathize with what you’re saying, but this is a lot to take in.

4-5: Nora: A-and besides that, I’m not even sure what help I would be. I don’t have any gem powers. I’m mostly human.

6: Pink Pearl: Of course, take all the time you need. Emerald: All the time?!

7: Pink Pearl: Even if you choose not to fight with us, we’d still like to offer our protection.

8-9: Pink Pearl: Regardless of you not being Blue exactly, you are the last diamond in existence.

I'm rewatching Steven Universe, so I decided to draw my favorite character 🌹

I can't hate Stolas nor Pink Diamond, no matter how flawed they are.

Both were abused, neglected and wanted to be free. Both caused a lot of mistakes, and got called out heavily by their own child.

And yet they're both fundamentally well intentioned.

The big difference is that Pink's actions brought a lot of trouble, all while she was trying to prevent it. And by creating Steven she left him her mistakes to fix, which I don't think she intended to do with malice. She truly wanted him to be human, and grow up and change and be free. Which she could never do nor understand considering how she was brought up.

Of course, she made her choices, Steven resented her for it for all the right reasons, but she never wanted him to suffer...

Stolas was there for Octavia always, before his one act of rebellion caused so much strife for her. He never intended to hurt her, but it happened. He only wanted to love and be loved for once in his life, and he paid the consequences of his actions by losing everything, including Via's trust in him.

And she's angry at him for lying to her. That he endured being depressed and suffering for her sake. He wasn't wrong for wanting to be happy, but with how he handled the situation, he failed to consider how she'd feel with his actions.

I'm not faulting Steven nor Octavia for being angry with their parents.

But I also wished Stolas and Pink would have it better. They were victims who just tried to escape their pain and be happy. But abuse and neglect don't leave you with good reference for dealing with pain, and in the end, even with the best of intentions, you might end up hurting someone else, regardless of what you do. Interestingly, both felt powerless to change their fate, but when they tried, they caused damage because they HELD too much power, especially in their relationships.

And neither realized that until it was too late. When the damage was done.

At least Stolas is still able to recover and make it right, eventually...

Anyway, this was me pointing out how Rose Quartz/Pink Diamond and Stolas are fascinating characters because of how flawed they are. Neither clear cut heroes nor villains, just... powerful yet emotionally broken victims who wanted to heal and be happy, and things happened from that wish.

I'm forever blown away by how Invincible and Streven Universe are basically the same story.

Both are kids who are learning how to master superpowers they inherited from their alien parent.

Both have one parent who came to earth to Conquer it.

Both come to learn that their parent was not who they said they were.

Both fight to prove to others (but mostly themselves) that they are different than their parent in some way.

Both must battle increasingly powerful aliens sent to earth from their parent's planet.

Both struggle with the violence they feel they must enact (or expectation of violence) to end an intergalactic conflict.
