Things I won't forgive the fight club movie for regarding the character of Marla Singer, entry C:

The manic pixie dreamgirlification of her own struggle with life and death. The narrator gets to have a serious issue driving his alienation but Marla gets her cancer removed so her pithy statement about the tragedy of death being that she doesn't fall over dead randomly is just a bit Offbeat And Interesting And Edgy haha! She's a real tourist, really, nothing ever stated to be wrong about her. Sure she overdoses. Sure you can see she's got a shit life. But she doesn't get backstory. She doesn't get a life beyond fun little statements that, when her own reason for saying and thinking them is removed, mostly just reflect the narrator. In the book, it is very, very clear. Marla does what she does because she has cancer and is afraid of The Slow Death. The Wasting. The Struggle. By taking that away you even reduce her suicide attempt. It puts it all in this context of nothingness. Sure, you can assume a depth, but I don't think we should be uncritical about the fact that they chose to remove it. Marla Singer is more than an object that bothers the narrator out of the support groups and gets fucked by Tyler Durden. Marla Singer is a person in her own right in the book, and in the movie she's just... not.

#fight club #the other major beefs are: Marla is the one who intervenes and chases the narrator down so he doesnt shoot himself at the end. she's not a #fucking damsel in distress #it's arguable she 'saves'the narrator #those are two interlocking beefs...#secondly taking away her clarity of the situation and thus her own choices in the entire later half .....#in the movie marla arguably never even knows about the split personality thing!!! he doesnt fucking tell her!!! she just suddenly gets #pushed around by big brave masculine man protecting unknowing victim woman who is stupidly resisting #*vomits*#bro in the book marla is keeping this fucker awake. tracking him thru the night #she slaps him across the face #she makes the KNOWING CHOICE to persue him to the parker morris building #to remove her entire reason for how she acts then also make her entirely passive in the latter half of the movie when she was previously #quite active.....#literally aside from this and the defanging of project mayhem i consider this one of the best adaptations of smth ever #but they really fucking let misogyny ruin a major part of the story #sorry this is incorherent i'm just like #this is legit the only way people come up with those 'marla isnt actually real!!' theories too #because she's totally reduced from her own person into a mirage for the narrator's interest

Her relationship with gender is a lot more like.#like she doesn't see herself as having never been a man or like she isnt a man anymore now that shes transitioned.#She would usually describe herself as having always been both at the same time but preferring to be seen as a woman at this #point in her life.#idk if you downloaded all of 2024 english language gender talk into her head shed describe herself as a bigender transfem #but shes from old timey fantasy land and also has like. a war and an extremely complicated interspecies alliance to think about #Ladys busy. she doesn't have time to put that much thought into gender outside of 'its nice when my friends and family #refer to me as a woman and i like presenting as one a lot more than i liked presenting as a man even if i didn't find presenting as a man #that distressing. (Though what about Sannan’s hand? It was an old wound? And also considering that tuberculosis destroys the lungs I guess the ochimizu should at least mitigate its effect by repairing some of the damages which might explain why Souji shows less symptoms?)

#the kilmeny read-along has been sooo funny to third-party #you guys are so genius #i always felt like kilmeny was maud’s ‘gotcha’#mostly because of this above journal entry #it felt like a total satirical play on traditional fairy tales #right down to how we see kilmeny’s life truly begin and develop and the moment she meets her ‘prince’ eric #like #right after she meets eric things progress for her… she sees herself for the first time… she perceives herself… and in the end she speaks #all things she hadn’t or couldn’t achieve without him #so here we have our damsel in distress… given growth and a beginning by a man that only wants to really trap her again #say nothing of the way kilmeny is the titular character and yet it is ERICS story #this feels like maud (a huge lover of fairy tales in general) having a bit of a go at these old-timey stories #how easy it is to suppose she was poking some fun at the Way of the World then too #her own existence as a woman was about to transform at the time she wrote it… she was engaged to ewen in 1908 #ANYWAY that is my whole entire 2¢#i’m about to go like posts and make it EVERYONEs problem so RIP to y’all’s notifs #lucy maud montgomery #kilmeny of the orchard

Some attempts at a design for Selena :3. The second image is inspired by the wedding in Haunted Castle, but I changed Simon’s outfit cause idk I just can’t picture him being comfortable in a suit.

The last two of these are way more headcanon-y lol. They’re under a cut mostly in case my headcanons and story ideas change d(^^ ). One of them was inspired by a Kikuo song I was listening to while drawing lol, the song “Let’s Go to Heaven”.
