It's really interesting that Wynne actually has quite a measured, bordering on downright sympathetic response to hearing what Jowan did in the prologue -- if the mage Warden says "I still can't believe Jowan was that stupid", her answer is something like a thoughtful "Stupid, or desperate, or merely curious?". She seems to think of Jowan as a kid who got in over his head, rather than any less charitable interpretation. I do believe she genuinely is as against blood magic as she publicly expresses and as the Circle party line demands, but as a private person she clearly has a more nuanced and potentially kinder understanding of the reasons why someone might resort to it, at the very least.

(related: when she says that part about Irving telling her what happened, there's no dialogue option in the first stage of the conversation (except choosing the 'leaving the conversation' one) that doesn't net you +2 approval! no matter how the warden feels about it, she is ready to recieve it. I think that says something sweet about how Wynne conceptualizes younger mages and the honest real affection she has for them. if you didn't snitch on jowan and say you stand by that decision, though? +3 approval, apparently! what Wynne says and what Wynne thinks is not always the same thing indeed, her idea of where personal loyalty and integrity stands vis-a-vis a mage's responsibility to the circle may be more flexible than she'd have people believe, you'll be surprised to learn lol)

I have always liked wynne and found her interesting, in all her hypocrisies and her earnest care, but with slightly older eyes she's extra fascinating to me in the same ways that Iron Bull is -- seeing someone whose mind has had hollows carved out in it by the need for double-think and compartmentalization imposed by the oppressive systems and ideologies they live under, and the quiet fight of the self to still preserve vital parts of itself that the system deems unacceptable in the hidden backstage areas of the soul, as it were. (and for both of them part of that self is love and protectiveness of specific other people, beyond what their 'role' dictates is acceptable for them.) I think Wynne has managed to sneak more of her internal self through the meatgrinder relatively intact than Bull overall, but it's the same logic underlying it, for me, and it makes me feel such intense affection and compassion for them both to see how hard they try

so she is definitely a star of some kind. i mean she is an angel but in that story in particular The Stars are kind of angels. like they’re otherworldly beings and they jus kinda hang out. cosmically. it’s a different dimension separated from the human one but like, obviously stars still exist for humans, they just don’t do anything crazy because the rules of the world dictate that their realities shouldn’t interact. angels can observe the other world from far up above yet they still exist on a different level. But tbh zavijava had never enjoyed the otherworldly ethereal whatever lifestyle—she just didn’t feel like she fit in there. she is a #1 humans fan though so she knows that’s where she’d fit in. so she does just that. she fits in perfectly :) and normally :) yay :)

Emmrich's quest was really fun, i actually think it's my favorite companion quest so far. Blackthorne Manor reminded me of Danarius's manor in da2, i liked exploring it a lot. in my opinion Emmrich really brings some levity to the team, his personality and age compared to the other companions is a fun contrast and his whole deal with Hezenkoss feels separate from the main plot in a way that makes it a fun and refreshing break from everything else.

his story is bittersweet, but not dark like you would necessarily expect-- i really love the way the mourn watch and Emmrich approach death as this very natural and beautiful thing to be revered and respected. and despite Emmrich being a part of the mourn watch for (presumably) 50+ years and working closely with spirits and the dead, he still has his own fears about dying that he's not ready to face, and we get to help him grapple with this as we deal with Hezenkoss.

i loved the final choice because it was actually difficult, and both felt right-- either way Emmrich has to face his own mortality and accept the inevitability of death, and i really loved the phrasing he uses when talking about Manfred and "honoring his sacrifice and letting him rest." bringing someone back from the dead isn't always the right choice! sometimes it's just selfish, and denying that person's right to death can be disrespectful and against their wishes. and with Emmrich considering lichdom, this is something he has to accept-- people die. you can't always bring them back.

of course, in this instance, you can bring Manfred back, too. and it's selfish but also another sacrifice, Emmrich giving up his chance at immortality for the sake of love and friendship... to acknowledge that you can't live without that, and so eventually you will die, but accepting it and choosing instead to enjoy the time you've already been given.

really great quest, i loved having to answer this question in the midst of fighting supposed immortal gods and an ancient blight, and forcing both Emmrich and Rook to face the reality of the death that's been all around them this entire time.
