Got Sick? Have a Monkey Nurse
Request: “since I'm sick with a cold, I wanted to ask for hcs and maybe scenarios if you're inspired, for both DO and Sun Wukong about how they'd react and what'd they do if reader got sick with a cold due to bad weather conditions. And while it's not life-threatening it has reader cough badly, losing appetite, being absent mentally, getting fever, headaches and not eating, body weakness and all around exhaustion, to the point she has to rest more often and longer hampering the group's speed. (She also managed to nearly collapse on the spot while walking because she wanted to carry on and keep it a secret maybe) Reader is also low-key embarrassed about it since she is so weak as a mortal and thinks DO and SWK will surely despise her for this. also maybe she is afraid she'll get them sick too so she will at first try to create distance”
Below will be a snippet, a reaction for DO & WK separately, and then some bonus stuff!
He knew something was amiss with you but he couldnt quite place what at first. Your scent had changed and you seemed sluggish, slower than normal as you helped pick up the small camp that morning so you guys could move on. He checked on you but you waved him off and with a shrug he decided to leave you be. But he kept a close eye on you, noticed how you lagged behind and seemed a little out of it. You didn’t even really react when tried sneaking up on you!
That evening when you guys bunked down for the night you didn’t hardly eat, much to his annoyance and concern. And you went to bed early claiming that you’d just been extra sleepy but that you’d be good to go in the morning. Come morning though, he realized you were NOT ‘good to go’. Instead you were even slower than the day before. And you were avoiding him, keeping a weird little distance between the two of you as if he suddenly started to smell, he sniffed himself self consciously of course because of this….a few times. But no, he doesnt stink. He wondered then if maybe it’s his breath? Or did you just need space?
Several times he had to stop and wait for you to catch up, or you seemed to stall periodically and would say you thought you saw something, which was starting to irritate him because there is never anything there, but he could tell by the way you were breathing that you were fatigued. Speaking of breathing, your breaths sounded strange. Rough. Like you were struggling to breathe.
As the day continued on something shifted, you started to cough. Light at first and you swore it was just due to a dry throat. But even after hydrating your cough continued, got worse even over the next several hours. Your scent also has changed even more since the day before. Around mid day, while he was keeping a suspicious eye on you, you seem to trip over your own feet and he had to rush catch you to stop you from falling. You’re warmer than usual, trust him he knows, and so he leans in and subtly sniffs you. You dont smell ‘bad’ or anything, but you dont smell healthy….almost like…
His eyes widen and he takes a moment to look you over carefully. Your face is flushed with a sheen of sweat on your brow and down your neck, your breathing ragged although you seem to be trying to hide it. You are also slumped in a way he hasn’t seen you stand before as though you are barely remaining on your feet. Plus, now that he’s looking for it there is a slight sway to your body and your eyes are slightly unfocused. The worsening cough, no appetite last night or this morning, and the slight sniffle you have going that wasn’t there before.
Shit, he should have know. You’re sick. As he watches you he wonders what caused this? You guys hadnt come into contact with any one who was sick and there hadnt really been any changes in diet and the pace of your journey hasn’t changed…but then it clicks. A few nights ago there had been a very quick and sudden downpour and the two of you had been taken by surprise. Normally he would have smelled the rain coming but he had been distracted by watching you try to show him that you’d been learning how to use a staff just by watching him. You’d picked up a stick and were waving it around with such fierce determination he hadnt had the heart to tell you that you definitely hadnt learned a single thing, but he did laugh at you though. Quite a bit.
The rain though had drenched you both and you’d taken shelter in a small shallow cave hed been lucky to spot. Scrounging up dry fire wood was a pain but after some searching he had managed. While you both sat in front of the fire to dry, him stripped of most of his clothes save for a loincloth covering his dignity, you had refused to take off most of your clothes, preferring to try to sit in front of the fire to dry. He had snickered at you for it, especially when later he was mostly dry and you were still sitting in damp clothes. Now though he realizes what a mistake that was.
He presses you about it and at first you try to lie, of course you do. But then you finally sag a little and tell him that ‘yes’ you are sick. And when you sheepishly explain that you didn’t want to slow him down??? He throws his head back with a groan and huffs. Of COURSE you would try to power through. He’s annoyed at himself for not stopping and pressing you as soon as he noticed yesterday that something was wrong. He doesnt want you to be suffering like this!
From your point of view how he is reacting is exactly as you feared. You assumed he would be annoyed with you, upset that ‘of course the human is so weak she catches a cold’. And that he’d be frustrated at the delay in your journey. Guilt weighs you down, you’d done your best to push through your exhaustion and aching body to prevent exactly this. Plus, what if you got HIM sick? Can he even get sick? This is when he stomps off without you right? Because you’ve finally shown you weren’t made for this…..cant keep up with him.
A cough tickles your throat and you try to stifle it but aren’t able to and before you know it your hacking, the feeling of his warm hand on your back rubbing soothing circles doesnt go unnoticed. You try to apologize after you’ve stopped coughing and clear your throat but the unimpressed look he sends you makes you look away in embarrassment.
Your supply bag is lifted off your shoulders and a surprised yelp leaves your sore throat as you’re bodily picked up, you’re not quite thrown over his shoulder but it’s a near thing. He stalks off carrying both you and the bag, walking with clear purpose and you try to protest but he wont have it. His grip remains tight and his pace steady all the way up until he finds a safe place for you both to bunker down and for you to rest.
What to do about this unexpected issue?
Both:
- [ ] Massage your aches, be it legs, shoulders, head, neck, back etc.
- [ ] Be super sweet.
- [ ] Manhandle you.
- [ ] Might whine in the back of his throat when you cough too long and knows it hurts you.
- [ ] You will NOT be getting up unless it’s to use the bathroom.
- [ ] A little overbearing….
- [ ] Hand feeding - unless you protest
- [ ] Checks your temp regularly with his forehead and hand.
- [ ] Depending on how bad your sickness is he may pace while you’re asleep and fidget or grumble as he worries over you. When you’re awake he wont show it though.
- [ ] Wants desperately to take your pain away.
- [ ] When you dont have a headache/ aren’t coughing a lot will try to make you laugh a little
- [ ] When you’re sleeping will give you forehead kisses and nuzzles.
- [ ] You will be taken care of and pampered. Comfortable. Made to feel important and not like a chore.
Destined One:
- [ ] Bare with him….he has never been someone’s nurse before. So he’s going to be a bit tentative as he gets you settled on to your bed roll and tucked in with furs/blankets.
- [ ] He’s a bit annoyed at you at first, mainly because you didn’t tell him you were sick and had tried to pretend, probably making it worse.
- [ ] But as he see’s how truly sick you are he’s going lose that irritation and concern will swallow it whole.
- [ ] He’s not going to know what to make of you but hes going to do his best.
- [ ] You‘ll probably have to guide him a little, hes never really been sick before so he’s lost.
- [ ] But once he knows what to do he’s going to take care of you. Getting you water, changing the cool towel on your forehead, getting you a little to eat here and there.
- [ ] When he figures you’re not warm enough he tries to use his body heat to warm you.
- [ ] Rolls his eyes at your protests and does it anyway - he wont be getting sick dont worry.
- [ ] He’s gonna be a bit of a mother hen….dont wanna eat? Too bad hes going to make you eat a few bites at least and wont stop prodding you until you do.
- [ ] He’s very soft during this time with you, gentle. Soft monkey noises to soothe and comfort - something hes not used to but cant help himself.
- [ ] Only leaves when necessary.
- [ ] He hates it the most when you say you’re dizzy and your head is throbbing from a terrible headache, seeing you be in such pain hurts his chest and he will gently massage your head for you while he rests it in his lap/on his leg.
- [ ] Towel bath. He will be respectful but he will wipe you down to get the sweat off of you.
- [ ] His voice, or well the grunts and sounds he makes are softer so that he doesnt hurt your head.
- [ ] Will rub your back and shoulders as you cough and hack.
- [ ] If you like ‘white noise’ he will rumble/purr in his chest to help you relax / sleep.
- [ ] When you finally let it slip that you were scared of upsetting him and that you’re sorry you were weak…please dont leave you behind, he is going to pout up a damn storm and very gently pinch your cheeks.
- [ ] If you HC him as speaking every so often he will finally use words to tell you that NO he isnt going to leave you and that hes not mad at you. That he just wants you to get better so he can see you smile again. He will sign this out or use his body language to tell you if you dont think he speaks. Either way, he just wants you to not be in pain.
- [ ] He’s gonna make sure you know he’s there for you. Sickness and in health.
Wukong:
- [ ] He’s gonna immediately jump on the mother hen shit.
- [ ] At first he’s going to be huffy as he talks and does things, but it’s because hes mad that he didn’t notice your plight.
- [ ] His movements at first will be rough but gentle as he lays you down and makes you rest on your bed roll.
- [ ] He’s going to tuck you in and if he has to, he will tie you down LOL dont play with him.
- [ ] He has helped with sick restless monkey cubs in the past so he at least has the basics down. Will definitely compare you to one teasingly by the way.
- [ ] He’s going to not take no for an answer, ever. He’s gentle about it though dont worry. But if he has to, he will put water in his mouth and kiss you - pry your lips open with his/his tongue and make you take the water. (So…I mean maybe refuse water for a kiss…?👀)
- [ ] He is going to ask you to do things ‘for him’ as in “Eat one more bite for me?” Kind of stuff. And hes gonna be sooooo sooo soft about it that honestly you’ll have to just do it because how tender he’s being.
- [ ] Will always be touching you, tail around you somewhere or hes massaging your neck and shoulders.
- [ ] He hates everything about this because you’re clearly in pain and feel horrible, but loves taking care of you. Loves that you let him.
- [ ] For once he’s pretty quiet, unless you ask him to tell you stories or talk. Might hum, very off key, for you too.
- [ ] Wont leave your side unless he has to for something.
- [ ] He’s going to tease you and coo at you - sweetly though.
- [ ] Will stroke your face and comb his fingers through your hair. Massage your shoulders/neck/head.
- [ ] Takes wiping you down seriously and wont make any teasing comments or do anything funny.
- [ ] Will ‘let’ you use him as a heated mattress (he makes you LOL) - if you get sweaty too bad he will just remove the blanket but you’re not going anywhere.
- [ ] When you finally come out and tell him you feared him leaving you behind, getting him sick, and slowing him down he full on scoffs and blows a gentle raspberry on your cheek.
- [ ] Tells you that you’re silly as hell for thinking that because, HIM? Getting sick? Fat fucking chance. And leaving you? Pffffffft good luck getting away from him (said as a joke).
- [ ] As for slowing him down? Well duh, you’re sick its gonna slow things down but he’d rather that then you making yourself worse - which he calls you an idiot for doing btw (but very fondly). But keep in mind he can literally just carry you and make up time. And he will.
- [ ] Go ahead, ask him for something, anything because it’s yours and he will GLADLY provide. He’s WAITING for you to make a request.
- [ ] He only asks for a smile as thanks.
Bonus 1 Both: He gets sick
- [ ] Huffing, whining, glowering at you when you aren’t near him so he can use your lap as a pillow/body as a pillow.
- [ ] Acts weaker than he is. Just so you will pamper him more. (Still able to manhandle you funnily enough…) He’s needy and clingy.
- [ ] Loves your attention - may not admit it. But his weak tail swishing tells you otherwise. Purrs while you take care of him. (Yes some monkeys purr)
Bonus 2 DO: He gets sick
- [ ] Tries to take care of himself at first but when you insist he allows you to - he’s not that hard to convince in his weakened state.
- [ ] Very cuddly and honestly? Kinda needy but silent about it.
- [ ] Very soft and has big imploring soft brown eyes that you cant resist. Never had to be taken care of so he’s living his best life right now even if he feels like shit.
Bonus 3 Wukong: He gets sick
- [ ] If he gets sick he is a HUGE fucking baby about it. I hope you’re ready for his pouting, whining, and dramatics (when hes awake, because when he sleeping hes adorable and an angel)
- [ ] Will pretend like hes fine, put a good show of refusing help, extra pouty. But when he gives in? Well….good luck.
- [ ] Will take everything you give him though like a good boy - wont feed himself, you have to hand feed him. He’s greedy for your attention.
Bonus 4: How I think he would sneeze in general (sick or not), this just was a passing thought….
- [ ] DO: Sneezes 1 of two ways, hides it or….sneezes like an adorable kitten with a little monkey sound in there. - first time you hear it you’d probably melt.
- [ ] WK: Sneezes loudly, suddenly, and obnoxiously like an old man whose soul is ejecting itself forcefully from his body. Does this on purpose just to be annoying and piss people off or scare them.

Zhu Bajie: do you exercise Travel Companion: I like to run away from my problems and feelings
The dialogue is based off a scene from Doctor Who. I don't think that my OC would be going with Zhu Bajie and the Destined One into the rock for the final battle (probably cause she is not able to enter) so she has to sit outside and wait anxiously for them to return.
She is happy to see them return but then also immediately notices how the Destined One's whole demeanour and aura changed. She knew that this point was going to happen where he inherits everything and becomes the new Monkey King, but I also think that she has a hard time wrapping her head around the concept of reincarnation and struggles with accepting it.
So yeah, I imagine the moment after new Sun Wukong comes out of the rock, it's an angsty moment. He just wants to see his best friend and tell her what happened, and now that he is finally "whole" again be able to propely have conversations with her and ask her about all the weird things she says and does, but instead she looks at him like she is very unsure of everything.
Sun Wukong doesn't really have the temper imo or at least here things get a bit heated and he snaps and well, she does what she is best at in situations like this: fucking book it :)))))
Obviously SWK wants to chase after her but Zhu Bajie helds him back and says "ayo kiddo give the lassie some time to process everything, she will come around" he doesn't want to but he knows that is what she needs atm.
Where is Travel Companion hiding meanwhile? In the Zodiac village, the Yin Tiger offered her a spare bedroom, and in exchange she helps around, with the crops, bringing materials back and forth and also has some good times drinking and sharing stories with the villager. Maybe also crying about her woes, and I think that the villager sharing their stories about SWK and explain more about his backstory and stuff helps the her to come around more.
also SWK knows she is there and comes by every day to get his harvest and the free medicing from your local meth dealer Xu Dog. She is hiding in Yin Tiger's lil blacksmith hut everytime he is visiting, but she knows that he knows that she knows that he is there.
And then one day when he is visting Yin Tiger, SWK sighs and goes all "hey bud can you pass this message to Travel Companion," and inserts some very sweet and sappy stuff, knowing that she is there and can hear him. Just as he is about to leave she decides to come out of her hiding spot and go "Hey... let's go talk somewhere more private".
SWK is not showing any emotions but you can tell by the flicker of his tail that he is relieved to see her. Bit worried about the dark eye circle and how not well-rested she looks like, but he will make sure to fix that soon.
#szynkART#wow that basically an entire fanfic lmfao#except it's not really a fanfic because I cannot write TT___TT#hey so any writer wanna swap skills with me for a month#let me write all the self-indulging fanfics and you get to draw all the selfindulging fanart#oh yeah also my OC had a massive school girl crush on Yin Tiger the first time she saw him#and he knows that but he is all like “gurl I am old enough to be your great great great great great great great grandfather”#but he cares for her#cepheus baskerville#black myth wukong#sun wukong x oc#sun wukong x reader#former heroes who quit too late#fhwqtl

Shadow of the King Au Art Dump
Since I very rarely get past the sketching phase any presentable art is rare, but I managed to find some for ya'll
Warning for some old ass art:
1. The Stalwart Generals
I spent an ungodly amount of time figuring out the designs, dynamics, and personalities of all of these monkies so I'll be damned if I don't show them first.
The Generals take care of anything SWK is unable to. They are in charge of FFM when he's not present.
Marshal Ma - While technically all the generals are the same rank, Marshal Ma is considered SWK's unofficial second in command. She's calm in every crisis with a very low bs tolerance and is 75% of the reason why the island doesn't fall to chaos every time SWK leaves. She's highly respected by all the inhabitants and can and will break your spine Bane style if the situation calls for it.
Marshal Liu - Mean bisexual. Marshal Ma's sister and the bane of her existence. On duty she takes her role very seriously. Off duty she likes to keep Ma on her toes with her dumbassery. She's easy going, hates clothes, and loves to fight. She has a slightly concerning amount of knives on her person at all times. She is big gay for General Beng.
General Beng - Meaner lesbian. A siamang and the largest and tallest of the generals. She enjoys dressing up, tea (both kinds), and a good party. She has a very short fuse. While her size and strength alone would generally deter anyone from testing her temper, there are always idiots. She can fight, but she knows her Liu would enjoy it more.
General Ba - The youngest of the generals. While she's not shy, she is very quiet. She does not waste her words. But, when she speaks, the others will stop whatever they're doing to listen. She likes to spend her free time in the libraries. Get her in the right mood and she'll argue with you for hours about the most random subjects.
.
2. Macaque face evolution
Was trying to get a feel for Macaque's face and how it changes throughout the au. Top right is the youngest, bottom right is the oldest. Bro gets all sorts of messed up from the whole died and resurrection thing and very much looks wrong afterwards.
.
3. New fit
Macaque and SWK have the whole cape thing going on, I figured SWK gave Mac one of his own when he was still training under him. I like to think it holds a lot of sentimental value to him since he still wears it in present day but he would rather get his head smashed in again than admit it.
.
4. I'm sure this won't come back to bite anyone later
Eeesh. Imagine spending your whole life training to receive and keep the Sun Wukong's attention only for him to casually give it to some random human boy thousands of years later. I mean, Macaque did betray him and everything, but it's the principle.
.
5. The Tongbi Gibbon Concepts
One of the four world-wrecking/celestial monkies. My brain was very focused on the whole pulling celestial bodies out of the sky part of her abilities that I made her based around that line.
Don't know if this fit is still canon as she and the Horse Monkey had a large role to play in Shadow of the King, and I'm considering if I should take them out
.
Bonus:
I consider the Tongbi gibbon and the Horse Monkey to be older than both Sun Wukong and Macaque in Shadow of the King. The Horse Monkey is the eldest, but the Tongbi's age is nothing to sniff at.
That being said, that does not mean she can't be bought.
Takes place after all the traumatizing shit in SotK
Panel 1
Tongbi: Child, I am an ancient being. I hold the power of gods within me. I was witness to the birth of the Great Sage himself. I have seen nations and empires rise and fall. I have gathered and spent innumerable wealth. Yet you think you can bribe me with 20 yuan?
Panel 2
The host: ...how 'bout 30?
Panel 3
Off-panel (Horse Monkey): TONGBI!!
MK: I thought the nimbus made you airsick
Red Son: Not helping, Noodle Boy
Tongbi: BOTH OF YOU SHUT UP!
#edit: added dialogue cause my handwriting is shit#edit: corrected Ba to being the youngest. Okay, i have to ask, is Peaches a workaholic? Or at least someone one who has to stay active less they get a bit angsty when stalled out? Not mention a bit of an overachiever? I imagine she is since not only has she worked for a merchant noble family but also has to deal with two very clingy, not quite sane, lovesick monkeys and a whole kingdom. (Though, i guess Wk and Mac would be a bit more involved in the last one than her)
Like how would Wukong and Macaque keep her busy? or get her to take a break?
Wk: Peaches. My darling wife, my loving mate, my beautiful queen who i oh so adore with my entire being.... What. Are. You. Doing?
Peaches with the upmost seriousness: Cleaning. I was getting a bit anxious just standing around so i decided to help the servants clean.
Mac: Cleaning?... You're cleaning... a kitchen... made of STONE? STONE MY DEAR! YOU'RE CLEANING STONE?!
Peaches: Yes.
it's definitely an adjustment for reader to go from working nigh constantly to... little to no responsibility. the first few months of her capture were mostly spent trying to escape or taking depression naps, but after that passed she began to feel anxious about not working. her former employers weren't cruel, but they definitely expected a certain level of punctuality and diligence from reader. to suddenly have nowhere that she needs to be and nothing she has to do was tough to get used to.
so, reader began to help in the kitchens. though the kitchen staff insisted that she didn't have to, when they saw the look on their queen's face...they took pity on her. she was allowed to help clean or to take turns stirring pots. then, once swk allowed her to go outside, she would go over to the orchards and ask to help harvest fruit. again, the monkeys set to harvest the fruit were hesitant. surely their queen wouldn't want to dirty her robes climbing trees—oh wait she's already doing it, ok I guess she's helping us now! reader may not be as adept at climbing as her subjects, but she's determined. and despite not being as fast, reader fills several bushels of peaches on her own.
the warlords are initially unsure about allowing their peach to work; she's a queen, and part of the reason they took her was so she wouldn't have to work. but...she seems very happy after a day of assisting the servants. she's tired in the evenings, but happily tells the boys about what she did that day, who she worked with. it's the most spirited she's been in months. so despite their hesitancy, wukong and macaque continue to allow reader to help at her leisure. unless they have plans for her, in which she will be carried away from whatever chore she's doing to attend to her queenly duties (ie paying attention to her husbands).
all in all, reader's efforts have (unbeknownst to her) thoroughly endeared her to the servants of the palace kitchens and orchards.

LMK S5 Fix-it: the Four Divine Beasts
My feeling on LMK S5 has stayed pretty consistent after first watching the Chinese dub: "nice character moments, but what even is this worldbuilding?"
And personally, the Four Divine Beasts/Guardians/Symbols are the biggest symptom of S5's worldbuilding problem.
Namely, they feel more like plot devices that are just there to die and cough up the Color Stones, and as a result, 4/5 of the "Find the Color Stone" plotline felt like a worse version of S3 and the Samadhi Rings, but with even less flavor.
Now, I'm aware of the 11-minute episode constraint, as well as the pressure the studio change might have created that contributed to the overall feeling of rushed-ness.
However, my criticism here is about the writing and worldbuilding, not the animation quality——things that, in my humble and uneducated opinion, could have been done a lot better even if we were sticking to the "Find the McGuffins" plotline.
Thus, this post. As always: very lengthy, very Chinese-mythos inspired.
Four Guardians & Five Phases
A brief Google Search on the Four Symbols, aka Sixiang, will tell you this: the Azure Dragon, White Tiger, Vermillion Bird and Black Tortoise are divine beasts in Chinese mythology that watch over the four directions, each associated with a color and one of the Five Phases.
(An old post of mine briefly talked about their origins as personifications of four big constellations that occupy a quadrant of the sky each, and their relations to the 28 Lunar Mansions)
And S5 certainly paid homage to their elemental associations, however brief and surface-level it is.
The Vermillion Bird's ability to use fire and its flaming temple is the most notable example, but this screenshot of the seal that appeared at the temple entrances also shows five symbols:
From middle left, going in the clockwise direction, these appear to be the characters for Wood, Water, Fire, Earth and Metal in Oracle Bone/Bronze Script.

Which begs the question...why would you spend so much effort on the tiny visual details, yet not show most of their elemental association through the narrative itself?
Like, suppose you are a foreign audience that knows nothing about Chinese culture and legends, who have just finished watching S5, and I ask you "What elemental powers do each of the Four Symbols have?"
Apart from Vermillion Bird = Fire (the obvious one) and the Black Tortoise = maybe Earth (which is not mythos-accurate, btw), can you honestly answer it, based only on what the show has given you?
Which leads me to my biggest gripe: their random-as-hell placement.
Even the Samadhi Rings have a map, however vague it is, but with the Color Stones, the gang basically just wandered all over the place in the hope of eventually running into one of the divine beasts——and they did, somehow!
Like, I'm not asking the writers for an entire mini-arc that's just them piecing the clues together. But will it be too much to let SWK or Tang make an off-hand comment like this?
"Well, legends said that the Four Symbols watch over the four directions and their respective elements. So if we wanna find them, we just gotta go real far in these directions, toward places with the most of that... elemental stuff! Right?"
And that brings me to the actual fix-it part. The Vermillion Bird can stay where she is, but the placement of the other three should also logically follow their elemental associations.
Oh, and though there's limited space for their characterization, they should at least get some individual characterization apart from "wise ancient guardians".
Xuanwu, Black Tortoise of the North

The fact that Xuanwu, or rather, it's snake half, can transform into stone at will might lead you to believe that its element is Earth.
Well...no, not traditionally; the Black Tortoise and the North correspond to Water in the Five Phases system, and I'm gonna both stick to that and build my fix-it off this foundation.
Instead of cosplaying a stone statue in the middle of nowhere, Xuanwu is gonna be residing on one of the islands in the North Sea, where dark tides and huge snow storms rage endlessly under the sunless sky.
So Sandy, being the water travel specialist, is gonna head out there on his boat. Mei would go to her great x N granduncle, Ao Guang's place, to see if he has any clues on, well, this big blue dragon that's also of the East.
Pigsy and Tang would head west, classic JTTW style, towards the mythical Mt. Kunlun where Queen Mother of the West resides (based on one of Tang's books that said the White Tiger was her emissary), while SWK performs an all-round search everywhere on his somersault cloud.
Which leaves MK: his dilemma is not about some random divergence in the road, but which of his friends to follow. Like, what if he goes with one person, and something bad happen to the others in the meantime?
In the end, even though he reluctantly goes with Sandy, he is still constantly distracted by his worries about everyone else, which segments nicely into the meditation training of S5E3.
But since they are doing it on a boat, there can be an external storm to go with the internal storm, causing further distractions for MK and also forcing them to seek shelter on the nearest island.
An island that, strangely, seems to be coated in a thin layer of ice. It isn't just the earth that's frosted over: all the plants, a few unfortunate multi-headed (???) seabirds, and a snake have also turned into ice statues...
Wait, snake? How does a reptile survive this far out in the north?
They have a bigger concern, however. The ice is slowly but steadily spreading, over the beaches and the surrounding seawater, and if they don't finish the search soon, the ice might get too thick for the boat to break.
So MK dashed off to do a grid-by grid search, then circled back to the place with all the frozen statues...and found the snake missing.
Cue, peak paranoia moment, and going on a wild-goose chase for the missing snake that might or might not be an ice-wielding demon waiting to ambush them.
In fact, the snake almost seems to be taunting them, seeing how they run into several "frozen snake statues" that turned out to be made of actual, solid ice. Sandy keeps reminding him to stop and think, while MK finds it harder and harder to put the lessons to practice.
By following the trail of ice statues, however, they eventually arrived on a little island in the middle of a frozen lake, where the real snake——the one half of Xuanwu lay coiling around the Blue Color Stone.
Just when MK is about to dash out and grab it, the snake comes to life with a hiss, and they barely dodged the ice spikes rising up from underneath their feet.
"Begone, foul spawn of Hundun! Return to thy conniving master, ilk of the Floodbringer, before I freeze every single drop of thy tainted blood!" "Um, I-I think you've mistaken me for someone else? I'm the Monkie Kid, and I'm here to collect your Color Stone so I can save the world——" "Doth thee mistake me for a fool, too?" The snake bore its fangs, rising its head high up into the air. "I can feel the flames of dear Lingguang on you, murderer, ripped straight out of its rightful owner's chest! She would not have perished without a fight, nor shalt I!" "Enough, Zhiming."
The tiny island itself begins to shake, revealing the other half of Xuanwu, the Black Tortoise itself. The snake still manages to half-encast Sandy in ice, before the Black Tortoise traps it inside a ball of flowing water.
She briefly apologized for her twin's hostility——whereas the strain of keeping the world together affects her body in the form of visible cracks, her other half has not been in his right mind ever since the Vermillion Bird's fall, living in the distant past and rarely able to perceive the present.
(The whole conversation is punctuated by the snake's psychic screeches in the background, which alternates between accusing her of betrayal and stating she must have fallen victim to the "poisonous blood of the enemy".)
Which makes the upcoming trial even more necessary. No, it's not "mercy-kill her twin". Yet. MK needs to prove his ability to control his body and mind, that his psyche will not break like her other half here under the tremendous pressure.
Thus, the trial of meditation. And he needs to act fast, for she cannot hold the snake back for long, as made evident by the slowly creeping ice inside and outside his watery prison.
"If you are truly worthy, then vanquish your fears, and stand before us in your true form. Brandish Lingguang's stone, so that we may be released from our watch in the long night."
MK succeeded, like he did in canon, with a small difference: his mastery of the monkey form is required for, and enables the limited usage of the stone's power.
So, holding the Red Color Stone, he unleashes a wave of fiery light that melts away the ice on Sandy and finally brings the snake back to his senses...somewhat.
He only managed to say the Vermillion Bird's name in a wistful voice, exclaiming "How I missed thy warm flames!" before melting into a puddle of water.
The other half of Xuanwu soon followed after giving him the stone, disintegrating into a mass of snowflakes that is swept away by the wind, but not before dropping one last bit of foreshadowing:
"Trust not the Floodbringer's Emissary."
(Sidenote: I think it'll be neat if the Four Symbols refer to each other using their IRL Daoist titles. Vermillion Bird - Lingguang, Black Tortoise & Snake - Zhiming, Azure Dragon - Mengzhang, White Tiger - Jianbing)
Azure Dragon & White Tiger
...And I thought Xuanwu's placement was random.
No, seriously, why is there a random music festival that just happens to be Azure Dragon and White Tiger themed that just happens to be near the actual place the two divine beasts are at?
To stay within the show's time constraint, I will not be giving White Tiger his individually themed placement, and instead try to come up with something that is appropriate for the pair as a whole.
Since Azure Dragon's associated element is Wood, it makes sense for him to have plant powers. Namely, whereever the divine beast resides, floras and faunas will flourish, no matter how out of place with the local geography and climate.
Once Mei learned that from Ao Guang, theoretically, it becomes quite the easy find: the mythical oasis city in western China, one that shows up multiple times in historical travel records yet has never been found by archeologists.
And the reason will soon become clear, as Tang and Pigsy make the drive from one desert city to another on their way to Mt. Kunlun (joined by Mei after she returned from the Samadhi Fire side-arc).
Namely, it's like a magical version of the famous Peach Blossom Spring of Chinese literature: an entire city that has been glamored over by the power of the divine beasts, occupied by people whose way of life hasn't changed since the Tang dynasty.
But as the guardians' powers fade, so does the illusion that veils it from the outside world, and the elemental magic that sustains this paradise.
Instead of a music festival, the gang finally discover the city that, according to the locals, has appeared out of thin air a few days ago, while it is in the middle of an archaic ritual procession.
The atmosphere is a lot more solemn, and it isn't hard to see why. Not only has the illusion vanished, exposing them to a profoundly alien world, the foliage of the oasis are growing and dying in rapid succession, clogging the streets with fallen leaves and yellowed petals.
An opera play is going on atop a nearby stage. It sings of a teal-robed immortal who rescued the refugees of a long-forgotten war, who turned desert into fertile soil with the help of a mighty divine general, concealing their existence from the greed and malice of the outside world.
The people in the procession knelt down and pleaded to the immortal for aid, to not abandon them in their hour of need. And their prayers are, indeed, answered, just not by the divine beasts in person.
The 14 Lunar Mansions that belong to the Azure Dragon and White Tiger descended from the sky, summoned by their masters, though they seemed to have been given different orders.
Namely, the Azure Dragon 7 spread out to guard all the major city gates, letting no one enter or leave, while the White Tiger 7 are ordered to round up all the residents and start setting up a teleportation formation.
Soon afterwards, Nezha arrived in the midst of the chaos. He is just as clueless as to what was going on as the Monkie Kid gang, but the moment he caught sight of SWK and friends, he's after them in hot pursuit.
Meanwhile, Li Jing is not happy about the Lunar Mansions suddenly acting without his orders, and commanded them to stand down or be arrested for insubordination.
"With all due respect, Devaraja Li——" Before the Moon Fox Star could finish her sentence, another stellar beast stepped forth, his tiger tail swishing behind him. "Who the hell do you think you are?"
Results: most of the Azure Dragon 7 get sucked into his pagoda, but while they were fighting, the White Tiger 7's formation activated, teleporting the majority of the city residents to god knows where.
While shit was hitting the fan, Tang hurriedly teleported the gang away, right into the sanctuary of the divine beasts——an underground temple.
"It's over, Mengzhang. Now that the Harbinger is on our doorsteps, and your pet mortals are safe at the cost of our loyal warriors, will you finally rest easy?" "Not...yet. There are still...stragglers, left behind." "Stragglers you have doomed yourself! Their fate is sealed the moment you cast your mirage over their ancestors and create this little utopia, frozen in time." The cracks on the tiger's body widened. A thick layer of condensation began forming on the metal reliefs, as if the very walls of the temple were weeping. "I should have never agreed to stay and help." "Yet you...still did. And I'm so glad you are here."
Yep, in this fix-it, I decide to use the Azure Dragon & White Tiger for some thematic parallels, with them basically repeating Nvwa and the Pillar of Heaven on a smaller scale.
The former created a garden city in the middle of the desert, while the latter uses his power to provide the water source that sustains the city (because Metal births Water).
As the end approaches, however, they are faced with the problem of ensuring the city residents' safety, since, upon their death, the entire oasis will revert to a desert overnight.
The White Tiger feels like there's no point in trying anything, since their death means the Harbinger will fulfill his destiny soon and give the world a reboot.
But the Azure Dragon insists on channeling his power into the land until the very last possible moment, so that the people's last memories will be a mundane, peaceful one.
Besides, they know very well that Fate and Destiny are no longer ironclad, when the very laws of reality are breaking down. How, then, can he be sure that the cycle will end and the world will be reforged as Nvwa intended, seeing that its premature beginning is already an outlier?
After a long argument, they had reached an uneasy compromise. Thus, the chaotic arrival of the Lunar Mansions and the hurried evacuation of the residents.
"You will understand, won't you, Harbinger?" The dragon looked into his eyes. "Even if you know it's selfish and futile, that you can't keep them safe forever, you are still going to give your all, just so their happy days will last a little longer..." "It is easy for Brother Jianbing to say, let go, face your end with honor. For Metal is the clashes of blades, the unforgiving axe of executioners." "I? This old fool just saw lives. Of men and women, children and elderly folks. And I cannot stand by and watch them wither."
MK nodded quietly, feeling Mei's worried, "are you not telling me something" glance on the back of his head. He reached out a hand, and the two divine beasts press their foreheads together.

The dragon faded away in a rain of falling leaves and petals, and when the Purple Color Stone hit the ground, nothing remains of the tiger but a thin layer of silvery, metallic sand on the floor.
Appendix: Inside the Pagoda
The fix-it is mostly over at this point, so the following is just me adding some additional worldbuilding and foreshadowing to MK's solution in E10, to make the whole "giving powers to everyone" thing a little less out of left field.
In the previous section, it was mentioned that a bunch of Lunar Mansions end up inside Li Jing's pagoda too. And when MK and friends run across them, they are in a pretty bad state.
Namely, the same cracks they see on the divine beasts are now appearing on the Lunar Mansions' bodies too.
"Isn't it obvious? Our masters are no more, so we now bear the brunt of the weight that was once on their shoulders..." "And are on our way of being crushed to a pancake." "Very tactful, aren't you?" The one-horned man sighed. "But yes. Lord Mengzhang is a stellar beast too——the greatest of all. He is a constellation, while we are merely the stars that make up the dragon's body, embued with a tiny fraction of his power." "And when the very sky of the East has fallen..." "How can the stars remain unscathed?"
After that, they basically exit the scene to fade away offscreen. But the information they revealed plants the seed of an idea in MK: specifically, that the Color Stones' power (and burden) can be shared between multiple individuals, like what happened at the end of E10.
Also, tiny fix: instead of MK learning the circlet spell outta nowhere, he's gonna tap into the power of the Color Stones during his fight with SWK, just like he did during Xuanwu's trial, to buy enough time to make his sacrifice.

So, I want to do my own LMK / Post - Isekai’d Into The West story but I have several ideas and cant decide which to focus on first…
Here’s the Setup:
For fourteen years Reader guided the pilgrims west. Now at last they had reached Soul Mountain where Buddha would send her home. That was the deal.
Sun Wukong wanted her to stay, and she knew she would miss him dearly, but she just didn’t belong in ancient China. She had to go home. After more than a decade missing, her family probably thought she was dead!
Reader missed her family and friends, her home, hell, even her old job! She missed Netflix and pizza and indoor plumbing. It had been fourteen years since she’d been to a salon and gotten a proper haircut. It was long past time to go back.
“You’re immortal, right? Just wait a few thousand years and find me in the future!” It had been a joke. Reader didn’t actually expect the Monkey King to wait for her.
So what happens next?
Good End
Reader was worth waiting for! She goes home to her time and finds the 14 years in the past were only 14 minutes in her present. She also finds Sun Wukong took her advice and waited for her. So now she gets to figure out how to introduce her demon monkey boyfriend to her friends and family.
--0R--
2. Wukong points out that she could just as easily become immortal and wait those few thousand years too. Reader changes her mind about going home and returns to FFM with the Monkey King. Together they restore Wukong’s home, and Reader gets to spend the rest of her immortal life snuggling with baby monkeys on Huaguo. Time passes and Reader returns to her family as a legendary immortal queen.
Extra Bonus: Macaque is there too, and in this instance he and SWK never had a falling out. Reader gets bonus monke hubby!
Bad End
Reader goes home to find the Monkey King waiting for her. Except this immortal demon spent the thousands of years between past and present being an unstoppable despotic warlord, and she’s his predestined queen! She gets home to find her city turned into a warzone as Wukong tears it apart looking for her. Welcome home, Peach!
--0R-- 2. Wukong doesn’t give Reader the chance to leave. He takes her back to FFM where she spends the rest of her immortal life - because of course he makes her immortal – in the royal pillow nest where he can keep her safe and sound. It’s for Reader’s own good of course. Can’t have her going back to a life of mundane, mortal monotony.
Extra Penalty: Macaque is there too, and whether he’s still buddies with Wukong or not he’s definitely not there to help Reader. She’s got two demon warlords to deal with.

Wowzers! That Request of Yandere Wukong headcanons got me thinking
Ok this gonna be angstyyyy
What if the y/n after all of it, justs- gives up? Like practically shes still there but she does whatever he wants, but neither looks at him with that same sparkle in their eyes, acting like some puppet instead of someone alive Wukong used to like for? Y/n will do whatever, yet it doesnt mean she loves him.
Will Wukong try to make them heal and be themselves again?
reference post!
I think that SWK would enjoy the peace for a while, relishing in being able to use you as his doll without complaints.
Howeverrrr, once he would start feeling the effects of your emptiness, it’s a different story. He’d try his hardest to get you to live again, bringing up family, letting you get fresh air, socialize.
He’ll even use magic to reset your brain and hardwire it to be your happy self again. To him, it feels like you’ve left him, and he’s going to do anything to get you back.

Paramita's concept design (for my AU)
Paramita was born after Yuebei Xing and the twins. He has long been the family's precious baby.
He's calm and curious. He loves to learn and is also very protective of his family, so despite his desire to travel, he hesitated for a long time before going. He was afraid something would happen while he was away and he wouldn't be able to be there to help his family. It was the twins who helped him make the jump.
He's not very expressive physically (his face doesn't show much emotion) and is easily embarrassed but he doesn't hesitate to express his feelings with his words.
(In the drawing above, they're getting ready to go to a festival and Paramita has held out his arm for Sun Wukong to take. He's embarrassed so he avoids his father's gaze under the teasing of his big sister. Yuebei Xing changed her eyes to match her brother and father.)
When they go on family trips to a human place, Paramita puts on his glamour where he only changes his eyes because humans are afraid of the black in his eyes.
Paramita is rather tall (175cm), having outgrown the twins to their great displeasure but he would never be taller than his sister who is already very tall with her glamour (190cm) in which she reduces her height (290cm).
Paramita greatly admires his sister and when he was little he imitated her a lot which is how he started tying his hair back. When he went away travelling, he cut his hair and gave small heart attacks to the local gods because he looked like his father
Redson and Paramita are childhood friends, having been children at the same time. As Redson is mixed race, he evolves differently from the others (as in Dungeon Meshi), so Sun Wukong was afraid that Paramita would grow up out of sync with Redson. Fortunately, this didn't happen and they spent their teenage years together. (They were also both disciples of Guanyin).
Paramita was the more mature of the two for a time, so he considers Redson his little brother. Redson also thinks of Paramita as his little brother lmao.
The rumor that Paramita is the son of PIF and SWK comes from the way he used to spend a lot of time with Redson at PIF's house, and that they acted like brothers.
The reasoning went like this : Act like brothers + same hair color (red) = blood brothers !
Paramita himself and Redson had their doubts when they heard the rumors, so Paramita asked his father if it was true. Sun Wukong had a small heart attack, then laughed and ended up telling him how he was born.

Flower of a Poisonous Seed Part 34
Part 33:
Tw: child neglect, pregnancy mention,
Nezha was taking a nap after exhausting himself with housework. Red Son volunteered to help watch over him and his uncle while the former recovered.
This was all fine and well, but Wukong was concerned with his nephew's wishing to stay at their house for the sixth day in a row.
SWK: Little Nephew?
RS: Yes, Uncle, do you require something?
SWK: I would like to talk to you for a moment.
RS: ... What about?
SWK: I can't help but notice that you've been trying to stay over for a while now, and I just want to make sure everything's alright.
RS: *nervous smiling* Everything's fine, Uncle. Nothing's the matter at all.
SWK: *raises eyebrow*
RS: *takes a deep breath* It... it's difficult to talk about. I'm not trying to hide anything from you, but... it... it's just hard.
SWK: Okay... I'll be patient. I'll listen when you're ready to talk.
~~~
Red Son was prepping dinner with Wukong's help.
RS: Uncle...
SWK: Yes, Nephew?
RS: Why... why did my parents leave me with you so often?
RS: Why do I have more memories of you being there for me than them?
SWK: I'm afraid I don't know. I never asked.
SWK: When you were little, your parents started leaving you with me, claiming they had "business" to attend to and couldn't take you with them. I doubt that's actually what happened.
SWK: When I was pregnant with one of your cousins, for the life of me, I can't remember which one, I found your parents and lectured them into the dirt about taking responsibility for their own child and being present in your life.
SWK: I didn't bother asking why they were doing it. In my mind, there would never be a good enough reason.
SWK: They never left you with me again. Unless it was to have a play date with your cousins for a few hours, of course.
RS: Until Father's imprisonment, that is.
SWK: I'm still very sorry about that.
RS: I don't mind so much anymore, Uncle.
SWK: How did things go after that? Between you and your mom, I mean.
RS: It... was rough, to say the very least.
RS: She'd spend hours crying over Father. She barely paid any attention to me.
RS: She would ask Nezha to babysit me-
SWK: Oh, for the love of-
RS: Not for as long! Just a few weeks maximum.
SWK: That's still too long!
RS: ... probably, yes.
RS: In any case, I barely spent any time with her. After I was grown enough to take care of myself, I did. I think Nezha had a similar talking-to with her. We didn't really connect with each other, though.
RS: It was only after I started working on the gauntlet I used to free Father that we really started to have actual conversations with each other.
SWK: Oi vey...
RS: I know. It's not what you wanted.
RS: Unfortunately, it's just what happened.
SWK: I'm so sorry, kid.
RS: Anyways, that's why I've been wanting to stay with you lately. Things aren't bad between my parents and I, it's just... I've been having a hard time navigating it all.
RS: The major question on my mind is, "Why?"
SWK: Did you ask them?
RS: I did...
SWK: And?
RS: If verbal dodgeball was a sport, they'd be champions.
SWK: Well, go figure.
RS: I... between that, and you, the one person I've had all my life being sick, it's...
RS: It's just... so much.
RS: And that's not even taking MK into consideration.
RS: I guess I just... needed to be with you for a while. Both of you.
RS: You two, and Pom-pom when he was still around, were my rocks in my increasingly unstable childhood.
RS: I can't thank you enough for that.
SWK: You never needed to. I did it all out of love for you.
RS: I know. I guess in these past few days, I needed a shelter. A place of security.
SWK: I will always do my best to provide that for you. I love you, Red Son.
RS: I love you, too. And thank you... *starts crying* for being the first person who's ever said that to me.
SWK: *brings him into a hug*
RS: *sobs into his arms*
According to your opinion, what do you think would be SWK's best written romance or what would they be as for the adaptations? You know, not only does the romance appear and that's it, but does it develop or at least seem good to you?
Not to say there are bad romances, but I just wanted to ask.
Honestly, it depends on what you think is romantic.
There is a reason that the Chinese Odyssey is such a cult classic and it's not because they get together at the end, but rather because it explores the idea of self-expression and restricted freedom in the view of romance. Sun Wukong cannot exist unless Joker becomes him, and Joker cannot become Sun Wukong if he falls in love. He had the chance to love and he lost it, being forced to change who he is, knowing what he could have had. Chinese Odyssey became so popular because it explores what it means to sacrifice your own individuality and conform to societal expectations while still having slapstick humor.
And I won't lie and say that has also changed my view of romance with Wukong in that I do not think there can be a Retelling of Wukong where he gets with an SO. There can be great Reimangings or Alternative Universes (and there are) but if someone wants a faithful adaption of the story there can be additions such as adding a romantic subplot but in no circumstances can they end up together. And that could still be a good romantic story.
The quality of romance does not have to depend on a happy ending but one that relates to people and touches their hearts. I think the key to any romance is that connection to the audience, showing a level of genuine yearning and the struggle with that yearning that anyone can relate to when it comes to connecting to another person, romance or not.
Personally, I haven't seen a romance story done it better showing that desire for connection like Chinese Odessey since...
But I would say a close runner-up is the 1996 Journey to the West subplot within the show. As I think as far as relating to a character this is one that I found personally touched by.
In the 1996 Journey to the West is also not a one-to-one with the book as it follows more like a drama than an adventure story with deep character elements but still a wonderful adventure. This probably has the best tv live-action versions of the characters with just how in-depth they go with each character and we actively see them have their individual character arcs as they go from quarreling journeymates to a close-knit found family.
On one of these adventures they meet the Spider Sisters, but not all evil as one of the Sisters, Shishi, is trying to find her lost love from her past life. The gang helps her and Wukong RELUCTANTLY helps as well though he is distrustful of demons and sees no point in trying to find lost love. Shishi's sister, Enen, tags along as well and defends her sister's desire to find her lost love when to her, love is the most important thing in the world. But to Wukong he believes that learning Buddhism and teaching is what is most important. The more Enen and Wukong work together the more Enen falls in love with Wukong's compassion, heroism, and diligence, seeing him as someone to be admired and someone she wishes to impress as well.
The reason I adore this love story is that it is one-sided completely and I think that the narration does such a fantastic job of showing how much Wukong loves Enen has a friend and someone he cares about deeply but he just doesn't have romantic feelings for. I thought that the build-up of their relationship was fascinating in that Wukong comes to terms with seeing Enen as a good friend and someone who has changed his worldview that not all demons are after power, some are just living their lives, and just that knowing her platonically has made him a more compassionate person. But that is the issue in that Wukong's love for Enen is purely platonic and how he even refuses to compromise on his morals and lie to her that he feels the same when he loves her only as a friend.
Enen falls for Wukong because he is her friend and someone that she admires as well. She tries to become more like him by giving up meat and eating fruit and even trying to study Buddhism with him. She didn't do these acts because SHE wanted to, but rather so she could be closer to Wukong. But in the end (Enen loses her cultivation from a demon and asks Wukong to at least say 'I love you' before she turns back into her original form) she isn't able to make Wukong feel the same THOUGH NO FAULT OF HER OWN.
In my personal experience, I have felt this many times, when friends try to admit their feelings, and that soul-crushing burden of having to let them down gently. When you care about someone and are willing to support them or fight for them but the one thing you can't do is reciprocate their feelings. Wukong in this series is being hounded by both Bajie and Wujing to at least pretend for Enen's sake (she does uncultivated and returns to spider form but isn't dead) and when Wukong tells her that he does care for her but not in that way he is seen as the bad guy.
Enen did nothing wrong in falling for Wukong, but she wasn't able to accept that he just couldn't feel the same. And Wukong did nothing wrong in not feeling the same as he cares for his friend greatly but he cannot lie to himself or her how he feels because he respects her too much to lie. Bajie and Wujing both call him heartless but moreso that they feel so bad for Enen but Wukong is the one that has to carry the burden of her feelings for the rest of his life.
Some people might not see this as a love story at all but I think this is a type of love story that is very common and that people on both the receiving and the giving end can relate to. That dejection from rejection and opening your heart and thinking maybe if you change, or something is wrong with you, or that you are not good enough. That horrible feeling of guilt for things out of your control and not being able to give someone you deeply care about what they want and then feeling more guilt that there is something wrong with you for not feeling the same. I thought that the show has an advantage over movies as it gives the characters time and room to grow and change around each other. Wukong becomes more sympathetic to demons and even has a deeper understanding of the importance of love just by knowing Enen before she "died" and rather because she lived (and still lives) he still cares about her and wants her to live the best life she can.
Even in her spider form, even when she wouldn't be able to understand him, Wukong refuses to lie to her about his feelings but expresses that he wants her to live a good life, one that leads her to enlightenment and back to her human form. He cares so much about her but just not in the way that she wants. I think there is something very well done in how the show shows that it wasn't either of their faults and that while they can love one another you can't change people. People can only change if they want to change, and you can't force people to feel the same. There are different forms of love and each is important, and just because someone feels a different kind of love doesn't make it any less real.
To me, a love story is about connection and how the audience can feel themselves in the characters. Love can be scary and you're more often going to face rejection than anything but that doesn't mean it is anyone's fault. Sometimes people just don't feel the same, as much as they do care about you, and learning to accept that and let go is a part of growing up. As such I think that my favorite would be the 1996 subplot as I feel that is it both emotional and that it also still follows the Xiyouji format. Especially love Wukong going to the Red String of Fate guy (Yue Lao) and rewriting people's tragic love stories so they can live happily ever after!
I think that maybe I enjoyed this the most as I feel like it still captured Wukong's character wonderfully as someone who might not feel romantic feelings (following the book) but also someone who learns compassion and what it means to love another person. He knew what it was like for someone to love him and that is not something to be taken lightly. People being vulnerable and expressing their desire can be scary and something to be even admired but can still unavoidable cause pain. It wasn't his fault that he didn't like Enen back but he wanted her and even others to find that kind of love. He wants people to feel free to find comfort in connecting with another person even if it isn't himself.
That is to say, there aren't other romances that I did enjoy that are reciprocated love as well! Funny enough the ones that I really enjoy are all Japanese or based on the Saiyuki series.
Alakazam the Great (1960) 西遊記
Monkey Magic (1998) モンキーマジック
The New Legends of Monkey (2018) 新猴王传奇
I think the common factor of these is that Wukong in all these forms becomes a better person just by knowing their SO and take it upon themselves to become a better person, rather than the SO taking it upon themselves trying to 'fix' Wukong, I feel like that is an issue with a lot more modern romances of Wukong in that they are far too rushed, if Wukong does start off as a jerk then there is no real reason the SO should fall for him, and then Wukong doesn't stop being a jerk until the end when there is no proper resolution. It feels all very rushed and very forced.
I think that I enjoyed these versions mostly because they had the advantage of keeping the SO alive and they play on the trope of "changing for your loved ones" rather than "getting character development because of SO's death." We see Wukong in 1960 slowly relearn what it means to be humble and grateful to his SO Rinrin with her undying (literally) devotion and how this dedication leads to him wanting to be a better person deserving to be by her side. Monkey Magic 1998 is a surprising one but one that I found charming nonetheless as Goku is a hotheaded and impulsive person but everything he does is for his friends one being Fenya. They never confirmed their relationship but she is the only one who never treats Goku differently after he becomes the king and even when he demands her to call him as such she never lets him forget his humble roots which by the end he learns to return to. The last New Legends 2018 is also surprising as I really didn't enjoy the plot of this show and found the pacing painful, but that Monkey and Tripitaka's relationship was something that had a lot of potential. From Monkey's arrogant attitude and Tripitaka's deception of her true identity, I thought that the show handled them slowly but surely coming to trust and rely on each other. I feel like the show could do a lot more with their character development but I doubt we are getting a third season.
I will say a guilty pleasure of mine is Monkey King 2014 just cause it is more of an innocent childhood crush kind of feeling than anything else. I'm sad that she still dies but I feel like out of the Wukong romances I have seen (please note I haven't seen them all) I can see why the SO would fall for Wukong as he was nothing but sweet and kind to her and that I was sad to see her go.
actually now that you mention guanyin was in the delivery room and she's Wukong's mom's reincarnation, (in slow boiled and jttw stone egged I think...)
I'm curious of her reaction to mac's disa- and reappearance
Even without the reincarnation connection, I'm curious as to how she feels about her lil brother figure/son figure's mate who has yes, suffered at the hands of her little one's arrogance but has also abandoned him in his time of need without contact for the entire duration of his imprisonment
(even under the influence of the brotherhood, he was ironically saying wukong always fled and never stayed for anyone before left without ever coming back despite that being a perfect opportunity to understand or at least get answers, ie he couldn't run away, he could've snuck out if they were close enough to be considered married and he really valued their relationship)
just think it might be a wee bit awkward in the delivery room and aftermath
and on that note, that reaction would probably be exastrabated in the au when mac leaves twice and risked missing the birth of his child
also wondering what would it be like if mac did actually miss his kid's birth, be spending a few centuries on the couch probably
(also really gross but how do the cubs get...out? Like do they shart out a stone egg or a live child...or is there like a magic beam of light and magic shenanigans happen or is it like normal human birth with Wukong, cause I saw ur ao3 and u headcannon trans swk and u mentioned Xi wang mu helping somehow and she's a godess of childbirth, but how does Mac do it then, gosh just thinking about it is terrifying, you don't have to answer if you don't want to)
Basically any au where Guanyin is present for Shadowpeach nonsense, she's glaring at both of them for their poor communication. But she especially glares threateningly at Mac for abandoning Wukong after their break-up under the mountain + his sudden disappearance in Post Jttw Stone Egged au.
Only reason Guanyin isn't punching Macaque with her thousand fists the next time she sees him is because she's got a job to do (tend to her brother/son-figure + his baby) and because Macaque dying (again) would make Wukong sad.
In an older post I mentioned; Stone Monkey babies exit their parent as Eggs. Its a mineral bonus layer of protection. There's mostly regular primate foetal-development going on; its just that there is a shell around the amnionac sac. Once its Go Time; the Cub pops out still in-shell with the cord detaching (imprint of cord leaves a spiral shape on the shell like how MK busted out of DBK's generator) at some point. Unless the shell cracks at some point during labor then it looks like super messy regular primate birth with bits of shell mixed in (gross). Often the baby monkey is "lazy" and hangs out on the outside in their shell for a day or two - nothing wrong, still enough nutrients/dao inside for a bit.
As for where it comes out; demons/celestials don't conform to regular sexual dimorphism - their sexes are roughly divided in tge Eight Trigrams. Wukong is Kūn/All Yin so his default is afab. Mac has a harder time since he's Xùn (2 parts male, 1 part female) so he needs some magic assist to deliver.
Mandatory relationship graph to get to know my ship(s) better. And yes, two graphs because I see DO and SWK as two different person and the dynamics would differ too.
Some thoughts
I have SWK listed up taller than DO - in my AU, the DO starts out being 160cm tall and then grows with each artifact he collects. It's also why in some of my art you can see DO being taller than Oz, or the same height as her.
By the time the journey comes to an end, Oz's hair has grown longer. She's still undecided about cutting it or not.
I don't think the DO has a high horny level, I think he is faaaar too focused on completing his quest of obtaining all the artifacts. But he does get flustered very easily when Oz sometimes grabs his hand or clings on to him cause something scared her, or when she compliments him.
DO does very easily get jealous though, he is a wee bit possessive. He does't like seeing other people or yaoguai get close to her, it makes him want to just wrap his arms around her and not let her go while glaring thousand daggers at the other person. He was not happy when Oz jokingly asked if the Yin Tiger is married and if not he would marry her.
DO and Oz switches between big and small spoon, although I think the taller DO grows the more he prefers to be the big spoon. SWK is the big spoon no questions asked ("You're such a koala sheesh." "I do not know what this koala you speak of is.")
With DO, Oz had lot's of different names to call him, mostly just to get his attention. "oi, you. Monkie. Kiwi. Peach. Luffy (kudos if you get the reference)".
With Su Wukong, it's mostly him that has the endearing nicknames for her, stuff like 樱花 (Yīnghuā, cherryblossom bc of her hair color), 心肝宝贝(heart and liver treasure), darling, princess, my queen.
I don't see Oz having a lot of nicknames for SWK though, she'll most likely refer to him with Wukong. If she is calling him The Great Sage, Your Highness, Your Majesty, she is being sarcastic.
There is no confession between DO and Oz, I think both are being far too busy trying to survive, with one trying to get all the artifacts and the other trying to go home. But there is no doubt that they care for each other and have become good friends.
SWK confesses first. My HC is that after the whole journey to the west + buddhahood + leaving buddhahood + gamble and plan his death + the experience and memories he gaines as DO traveling with Oz made him a lot more mature and appreciate the things he has in his long (immortal) life. And that includes Oz. Of course he still maintains a mischievious streak. He knows what he wants and he wants to be with her. He also knows that she has other shit to deal with, like the Celestial Court trying to put a leash on her now (because family history) and that she is still looking for a way back home, so he tell her how he feels, but that he understands she has other priorities at the moment, aaaand that he will continue to support her and be her friend, but also that he will wait for her because what is another 500 years of waiting ("yeah i don't think I'm gonna live that long.")
also also, SWK is definitely the hornier one. But he doesn't get jealous or possesive like DO does. He is very secure in himself and he trusts his partner. Ofc if someone is being pushy and makes Oz uncomfortable he will step in ASAP
I've also marked DO as having no relationship experience because I don't see him as having any, i feel like all his life he was preparing for this quest. But since he gets SWK memories after he finishes the quest, I do think that makes him having some experience? Especially since the game mentiones SWK and White Bone Demon were a thing, and he was im trever able to let her go and it was one of the reasons he left buddhahood. Idk about you but I do think that indicates a deep bond they had.
aaaaand that's it. Here is the empty template for those who also want to do it:
I've been thinking about monkie! Reader going through 'baby steps' when they're first Isekai'd and I gotta share.
M!r, stumbling around because their feet are a different shape and shoes don't feel right anymore,
Stepping on their own tail and accidentally grabbing stuff with it,
You know when your nails are long it's harder to pick stuff up? M!r, is STRUGGLING with her new claws (probably scratching herself on accident too)
They probably smack themselves in the face a few times when picking smthn up cuz they're not used to demon strength
M!r, CANNOT jump or hop properly, they keep over doing it and either smacking their head like Mario or slipping off of whatever they were tryna get over
Girlies struggling in the beginning 😔
M!R being a newly-borne monkey doing some clumsy shenans... I LIVE for this lmao.
I literally was planning on writing out this exact scenario in my M!R ittw comic lol.
Honestly, I'd imagine a lot of possible romantic scenarios between Sun Wukong and M!R (possibly even others? winkwonk) because of her clumsiness. M!R wouldn't actually tell anyone that she wasn't originally a demon, and would most likely keep herself disguised as human (for comfort, mostly) but, of course, Sun Wukong would go to Tripitaka and be like "dude she's a demon yk" and Tripitaka would obviously be really dumb and be like "pssssshhaaaww, you dumb, it's a human girl!"
Queue the regular fight between Triptaka and Sun Wukong because Tripitaka won't listen to SWK because Reader OBVIOUSLY looks human. All the more to keep herself as a human in the group. After a while on the journey, I assume, Tripitaka would find M!R's clumsy behavior to be really weird with the constant bashing her face while trying to pick up objects, scratching herself by accident, having incredible strength, going a lot faster and jumping a lot higher than a human really should... Leading to a beautiful scene where M!R would have to reveal themselves to the group and the group accepting her because they went so far with her already, she's practically part of their family now! (And then she steps on her tail immediately and cries from pain, resulting in her having to explain that she wasn't originally a demon, but telling a lie that she was cursed to be one. She doesn't know how she became a demon, after all.)
But what if Reader was sneaking out to try and meet Macaque? Maybe somewhere down the line where SWK has already taken Reader, but she’s still determined to see Mac, even under the cover of darkness.
How would he react? I bet not happy, but maybe more disappointed than anything.
yikes. ok, so
let's say this is happening before swk has killed macaque and is holding him in a dungeon somewhere in the cave. reader has done her recon already; she's–very subtly–asked some of the monkey citizens where he's being held. she's prepared to free macaque and run for her life.
however, the king is always aware of the gossip flowing between his subjects.
reader is able to sneak away that night, uninhibited. she probably should've been suspicious at how "exhausted" wukong was when he laid down next to her that night, but she was too distracted. after finally figuring out how to get into the dungeon, she wasn't gonna wait another night to free her only friend.
reader makes her way down into the winding passage shown to her by a well-meaning gaurd. after a long walk in near total darkness, the path opens into a cavern. it's empty aside from macaque, bound by his wrists, ankles, and neck by shackles that lead to chains magically sealed into the stone wall. on his knees with his arms stretched behind him, his head hanging low, he looks...half-dead. reader gently calls out to him, and gets no response.
she goes up to him, tentatively touching his shoulder...macaque startles awake, reflexively snarling and jerking in his bonds. reader falls backwards, missing macaque's teeth closing on her hand by mere inches. once his eyes clear of rage, a look of wide-eyed disbelief crosses his features.
"Reader...?"
"Macaque!"
reader surges up to embrace him. he can feel her tears against his shoulder. he's shaking, he realizes. he wants to hold her back, but settles for burying his face in her neck. he missed her, and her warmth is more than welcome in opposition to the chill of the cave. he's happy to hear her again too, having been driven almost mad by the sound of constantly dripping water.
but then he hears something else. and the realization of what's about to happen floods his veins with ice.
"You can't stay here, you have to leave right now–!"
"Isn't this a touching sight."
the monkey king's eyes burn like fire through the gloom of the cave, and his voice, though deathly quiet, echoes throughout the space. his body language would suggest nonchalance, but the malice radiating off of him is unmistakable.
reader freezes. her arms become lead around macaque's neck. she meets his look of defiance with a shaky, but determined look of her own.
"Just let him go, please," she whispers, knowing both demons can hear. "It doesn't have to be this way. I'll stay and I won't try to escape again if you'll just let him live."
macaque shakes his head. "Don't do this-"
"I'll think about it. If you come back to bed."
all is silent for a moment as reader turns to look at wukong. he leans against the entrance to the cavern, his posture loose though his arms are crossed. he seems...agitated, if his tail is any indication.
she pauses. she looks back at macaque, but he's hung his head again, his eyes hidden in shadow. he won't look at her.
"Go." he whispers.
and what else can she do?
reader shakily stands, turns, and walks back to her "husband." her feet feel heavier with each step, and it's almost a blessing when wukong picks her up. he carries her out of the dungeons and back to the royal bedchambers.
the king lays his queen gently into the large nest of pillows he acquired just for her, following her down a moment later. he kisses her passionately, and runs his hands down the length of her stomach. his claws catch in her robes, drawing them upward.
"Let me take care of you." he coos, his eyes glowing warmly.
reader remembers his hands on her and the heat of his body, his eyes burning through her, the scent and taste of peaches...and not much after.
she sleeps soundly that night.
---
the next morning, reader awakes to the satisfied smile of her king. he seems a little bit too satisfied, actually. her head still foggy with sleep, reader's filter isn't awake yet either. so she asks the first question on her mind.
"What...What are you gonna do to Mac...?" she asks blearily.
the king grins. reader doesn't like the implication.
"'Mac' and I made a deal. He leaves and never shows his face to either of us ever again, and I don't turn him into a meat bun. Everyone wins." wukong happily explains. "I let him go last night actually, after you passed out."
a beat of silence passes.
the king laughs lightly. "We need to work on your stamina, peach. You barely lasted two rounds. Though, maybe I should've gone a little easier on you–"
reader pushes him away, beating her fists against his chest as his laughter rings in her ears. she can feel her face redden.
after getting over her fluster, reader is...surprised. she almost can't believe that macaque would take that deal, but–
...she did ask for his freedom in exchange for hers. maybe...maybe she shouldn't be surprised that he took it. maybe she shouldn't be surprised if he never comes back for her. it isn't fair that he should suffer if he doesn't have to.
perhaps he finally realized that, too.
reader doesn't want to believe that macaque would abandon her, but...he doesn't come back. or give any sign that he's around.
reader mourns, and she's not sure why.
-----
macaque was just happy that she's alive. wukong hadn't hurt her, at least not physically.
the same couldn't be said for him, obviously.
wukong had been using him as a personal punching bag for however long since his last failed attempt at freeing his favorite (not so mortal anymore) mortal. not that macaque couldn't take it, but he was getting very tired of being chained up in this stupid cave. and he was very, very tired of not having access to the shadows. another fun quirk of his shackles.
macaque let out a frustrated sigh. he needed to free reader. he...he promised he'd help her get away from the monkey king. he needed to rethink his plan–
his internal monologue was interrupted by the sound of leisurely footsteps.
"You know, I really hadn't expected her to try and find you." wukong drawls as he saunters in. "I guess I should have, given how stubborn she can be."
"One of the things I like about her," macaque chuffs.
wukong huffs out a humorless laugh. he makes his way closer to his once-brother. macaque stiffens, readying himself for an attack. the tired smile on wukong's face makes his fur stand on end. at this proximity he can't help but notice how messy the king's fur is, and that–
...that he smells very strongly of reader.
macaque feels a surge of protective jealousy, despite his position.
"Our little tug-of-war was fun for a while, but I'm tired of it," the monkey king sighs. "I wanna settle down, y'know? Maybe have some kids, really focus on my kingdom."
macaque flinches backward when wukong kneels down in front of him. the look on his face is one of somebody who's been dealing with a particularly annoying pest and is absolutely done with it.
wukong stands. he summons the cudgel, stepping back.
"You're in the way of that, bud."
macaque doesn't have the chance to think before the staff comes down on his head.
Helloo! I wanted to say that I loved second chances sm, when I found a random chapter last year I read the entire fic in a couple days bc I had to know what happened next, then reread it every now and then while waiting for the updates
I like how we can see both sides of the coin with shadowpeach, how they both care but are still struggling for different yet similar reasons, their struggle with what they went through, dealing with each other's personality traits and habits(their own too) that are still hard to let go of, the glimpses of the consequences of the punishments and their backstory in general
And maybe it's a me thing, but I feel like your Wukong acts like he's a bit aro spec, maybe demi aromantic, and I love that he does, especially while still explicitly loving(and like longing for?) Mac sm
I got that feeling after rereading one of the conversations shadowpeach had in the kitchen when Wukong said something about just wanting to be near Mac, and having him as his best friend was so great kinda like there couldn't possibly be anything better
I know it's probably to show how he grew up, or his personality, and that he's dense (specifically when it comes to reading Mac's feelings towards him) but I feel that just adds to the similarities with the aro experience bc there's a side of the aro community that is blind to more romantic stuff, and romantic-coded gestures or more intimate closeness is just closeness all the same
And your Wukong gives me the impression that he just wanted Mac to be close to him, didn't matter what kind of close, and that he holds the title of "best friend" as a really special thing. Be it BECAUSE of Mac, or maybe since before becoming friends with him, like not just anybody would be his best friend (Also it was maybe to show his trust issues, but still)
I think Wukong said somewhere that he just wanted Mac to be happy to be around him, as happy as SWK was to be around Mac. And I know his inability to put his feelings(love) into words more than referring to a strong or special friendship is probably to show that he's not good with Feelings™, but I like to think that maybe he is enamored in the way a queer platonic love would feel like, so calling it a strong or special friendship kinda does cut it to some degree I think
Also the way Mei (everyone really, but she's more expressive about it, and we see her more than other characters) sees Wukong as a hopeless case, but I think Wukong would see Mac loving him strongly in any way as the best thing ever, as long as it's strong love, he wouldn't mind, love is love, like he just wants to be as special to Mac as Mac is to him
Also I'd love to see them be together even if they don't have the same kind of love for each other, bc the love they have for each other would still be just as strong, and would let them have just as strong of a bond, (in the future, as things are going I have hope, I do hope they end up together in this universe, even if nothing of what I'm saying fits them by the end)
I mean no disrespect to your original idea, or if that's not what u intended, I tried looking through your blog and I haven't found any mention of something similar or headcanons about it
But yeah, idk if u mind ppl putting headcanons on your stories? Some ppl do mind, so idk I just wanted to say that regardless of that hc of mine, I think how you write them is so cool and interesting, and I find that about Wukong really cool even if it's not really where the story is heading and it's been really fun to reread
Also sorry for the weird english, it's not my first language ^^'
First things first:
Thank you so much for reading and commenting!
I absolutely love in depth analysis like this it's so interesting to read and to hear what people think of my story. I 100% love writing this story specifically because it demonstrates how these two are completely different and yet eerily similar people who are just struggling to reconnect with other people despite them both having their flaws and traumatic experiences. It's really fun to write and explore and I absolutely love everything that you said here about it~
Duuude!! I fuckin looooveeee that headcanon! Holy shit that's so awesome! Honestly, I didn't even realize I was writing Wukong that way but now that it's been pointed out I can totally see it!
As someone who is kind of on the ace spectrum, I think I may have just subconsciously made it that way. Just like every other author I know, I have a habit of adding my own traumas/ideologies to my stories so I really shouldn't be too surprised LOL
But don't worry! I don't mind people making headcanons about my story~ In fact, that's my favorite part of writing is seeing how people interpret the story and seeing how they formulate it into drawings or headcanons like this! It's so cool!
Initially, my intention was to write Wukong as being oblivious/in denial about his own feelings and in general just bad with feelings. However, I really love your idea too! It's definitely one of those things where Wukong is just happy to be around Macaque. Macaque is "his person", the one he feels happy and comfortable around, the one he feels he can be open and honest around... and yeah I just realized how much that sounds like the beginnings of a queer platonic relationship LMAO
In any case!
I absolutely love your analysis and I 100% agree that Wukong would be okay with Macaque loving him in any way, shape, or form so long as Macaque feels as safe and comfortable and happy as Wukong himself feels when they're together. ❤❤
Thank you for reading!
