1. He's just always had red eyes due to being created as an ageless being + being a hybrid

(something something he's mobian but also very much not; he never did "grow up" in the traditional way; but also he's a human-socialized mobian hybrid so the significance escapes him)

2. They turned red after Maria was shot

(something something loss of innocence; being forever marked by the worst day of your life; they were going to be blue)

Have you ever taken a look at the original version of Bolt, "American Dog"? From what's been shown, it seemed to be considerably more surreal than the movie we ultimately got

Ngl I thought "surreal" was hyperbole, but I had to reread parts of that wiki page to confirm that it said what I thought it said.

If that would've gone to big screen I feel like it would be in a similar place as like Rover Dangerfield. Aka something quite a few people watched as kids once but was so absurd that it was shoved away as a fever dream until you find a random clip on youtube.

Bolt is more mainstream (which was the point) but I'm glad it's the movie we got. I was a huge dog movie lover as a kid but there was a certain level of anthropomorphism I never liked that American Dog seems to reach.

Thank you! I was tempted to keep him a fox as they're already clever and pretty well adapted to urban living. But genius doesn't fully make up for lack of thumbs so raccoon it is.

(And before anyone says it, yes I know raccoons do not actually have opposable thumbs but their paws are hand-like enough to get away with it)

Lol, Shadow takes the role of Bolt in the au. It's called the Shadow Bolt Au. He's a dog.

That aside, Shadow actually gives me working dog vibes. Standoffish but needs a job or he will destroy your house.

Sonic is the one who gives me cat vibes. Specifically friendly stray cat vibes. Usually off doing his own thing but passes by for food or to chill every once in a while.

Finalized his design but now I'm stuck between making a poll to name him or not.

On one hand, I'm stuck between quite a few names. On the other I have a habit of seeing what won and doing my own thing regardless.

Also apparently Venus is a girl's name? I thought it was unisex...

are you gonna put any other characters into the bolt au or are you just sticking to Team Dark?

Originally I was just going to stick to the main Bolt story but I don't know how to keep things simple to save my life and I've already changed Omega so yeah there are other characters.

It's kinda hilarious that Omega technically fills in for Rhino

Lol for real! Like Bolt Shadow and Rouge fit pretty cleanly into their respective species and roles, but Omega was a bit different..

I went from making him a hamster to a robot hamster to a guinea pig back to a hamster to a robot dog then finally decided to stop torturing myself and made him what I felt fit him best. A hamster can fit his personality, but I feel like his size and build is a pretty big (pun not intended) part of his character.

Also as a kid I lowkey hated Rhino so I feel Rottie Omega was probably for the best.

Shadow Bolt Au - Team Dark

Looks like this Bolt au thing is happening. I don't know how far I'll get but I'm having fun translating the sonic characters into animals for the time being.

Don't ask me how I'll finish this considering my aversion to drawing human characters, I haven't thought that far ahead yet

Why "Boo" for Sonic? Also I'm surprised Shads lets Silver call Sonic papa

Because Shadow is allergic to calling Sonic by his first name and Boo (Blue) is easier to say than "blue hedgehog" or "Hedgehog."

Lol the papa thing was an accident that ended up sticking. They both don't like it. Silver calling him that is plot relevant later so I'll leave it at that.
