I cannot get over how So High School is both a deeply fun song and also like...the biggest connection to "give me back my girlhood, it was mine first"/"And I'm pissed off you let me give you all that youth for free". Because how can a song with the line "touch me while your bros play Grand Theft Auto" also handle the whole Youth Of It All so well (and sound like belongs in a romcom).

Ooooooooooooooh don’t even get me started on this rabbit hole because I absolutely have gone down it in the last two months.

It all comes down to “bittersweet sixteen suddenly.” She’s laughing at living this proto-suburban dream teenage romance as an adult (in stark relief to the suburban gothic nightmare of Fortnight) but it IS bittersweet because it’s kind of a life she never got to fully experience as a teenager, because by 16 she was releasing her first album and being homeschooled and on the road touring. So she’s reliving these memories as an adult she truthfully never made herself as a kid. Let alone all the traumatic stuff she experience very shortly after what would have been her high school years.

(The bittersweet sixteen line is my favourite in So High School because it’s fun on the surface but quietly devastating when you think about it.)
