Connection between Barbie and Haunted Mansion!
(Only for the German version and I don't know if this is true or not)
First of all, since both movies' original language isn't German they are dubbed in German. Voice acting is very popular in Germany, however some well-known actors get a standard voice actor (for example Margot Robbie's standard German voice actress is Anne Helm).
This is Dagmar Dempe. She is a very well known voice actress in Germany, she is the standard German voice of Meryl Streep. So, whenever Meryl Streep is staring in a movie, you can be sure it's her voicing Meryl in the German version.
This is Karin Buchholz. Karin is (not only but also) Helen Mirren's standard German voice. She is not Jamie Lee Curtis' standard German voice, however. But she voiced her quite often in the past.
So, here is the "connection":
I think they asked Karin to voice Jamie as Leota but she was busy because she had to do the voice acting for Barbie because she is Helen's standard German voice and therefore couldn't do it so they asked Dagmar and she did it. So that's why we have Dagmar Dempe as Leota.
I don't know if that is true but I headcanon Dagmar being the voice of Leota because Karin was busy voicing Barbie...

'The biggest cinematic event of the year is finally upon us. The release of Greta Gerwig's highly anticipated Barbie and the release of Christopher Nolan's three-hour epic Oppenheimer on the same day has turned the Internet and social media into a frenzy over the past few months. This spectacularly different double feature has been dubbed "Barbenheimer" by moviegoers, and it has everyone from casual movie fans to self-proclaimed film buffs excited to hit the theaters again. With a combined runtime of just under five hours, Barbenheimer has made this summer one for the cinema history books.
To prepare for and get in the right mindset for each of these drastically different films, many people have been curating a list of movies to watch beforehand. Even Greta Gerwig compiled a list of films that she felt embodied or inspired the essence of Barbie. Everyone is looking for the best ways to gear themselves up for the double feature of the decade. While there has been much debate over the best films to watch to prepare for each film, there has not been much discussion about what to watch afterward. After seeing these highly anticipated movies that many of us have spent months looking forward to, it is likely that people won't be ready to leave these stories behind just yet. Therefore, we have compiled a list of 15 movies to watch after your Barbenheimer double feature to help you hold onto the feelings these films inspire a bit longer.
15. Singin' in the Rain (1952)
Greta Gerwig has said that films from the Golden Age of Hollywood heavily inspired her colorful, almost-musical interpretation of the world's most famous doll. Specifically, Stanley Donen's classic musical Singin' in the Rain greatly influenced Barbie's musical scenes. The movie is set during the transitional phase of Hollywood when studios were moving away from silent pictures to talking pictures, or "talkies."
It stars Gene Kelly as Don Lockwood, a silent picture star struggling to make the transition to talkies with his co-star and publicity stunt girlfriend Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen). He falls for a chorus girl named Kathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds) as Lina becomes incredibly jealous and determined to be a talkie star. It's a colorful, fun film with fantastic musical numbers and all-around wonderful performances from some of the time period's biggest stars. It has a similar feel to the jealousy Ken (Ryan Gosling) feels about Barbie not reciprocating the same feelings as him and the musical numbers in both share similarities.
14. Atonement (2007)
Joe Wright's Atonement is a romantic war drama that is set over the course of multiple decades, spanning from 1930s England to modern-day England. The film centers around a fateful event where 13-year-old aspiring writer Briony Tallis (Saoirse Ronan) irrevocably changes the course of two lives when she accuses her older sister's lover of a crime he did not commit. A good portion of the film takes place during the Second World War after the false accusation sends Robbie (James McAvoy) to prison and eventually to Dunkirk. It is a truly devastating romance as Robbie and Cecilia (Keira Knightley) rarely ever cross paths again and the audience is left wondering what their lives could have been like if not for that night. It also depicts some of the tragedies of war and a devastated Europe that make the love story even more tragic.
13. Clueless (1995)
Amy Heckerling's Clueless is an excellent movie to watch after seeing Barbie. Cher (Alicia Silverstone) has many similarities to Margot Robbie's Stereotypical Barbie from their fashion choices to their manner of speaking. Cher is a wealthy Beverly Hills high school student who is dealing with relationships, school, friends, her widowed father, and her ever-important social life. Cher, much like Barbie, at first comes across as a privileged young woman with a superficial personality. However, Cher is actually quite smart and a truly kind person that wants to make a difference in the world. Also like Barbie, Cher doesn't realize the true ways of the world until she experiences a harsh dose of reality herself. Both women take what they learned in the "real world" and use it to better themselves and their surroundings.
12. Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)
This list couldn't be complete without the inclusion of Stanley Kubrick's political satire, Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. This would work as a great follow-up to Nolan's nuclear World War II drama as it is set during the Cold War when tensions were high between the United States and the Soviet Union. Dr. Strangelove follows a maniacal American general named Jack D. Ripper (Sterling Hayden) with a desire to press the nuclear war button. After initiating a strike against the Soviets, a room full of politicians, generals, and diplomats frantically try to stop the nuclear attack. One of Kubrick's earliest and best films, it is often regarded as one of the greatest political satires, and should definitely be on your list of movies to watch after seeing Oppenheimer.
11. Legally Blonde (2001)
Perhaps the only other equally iconic blonde, pink-adorned character besides Barbie is none other than Elle Woods. Played perfectly by Reese Witherspoon, Elle Woods has been inspiring and motivating women for over 20 years to achieve their goals even when others think they can't. Legally Blonde sees Elle go through a character transformation similar to Barbie's that enhances her worldview but never alters her personality or her demeanor. The law students around her believe her to be a stereotypical dumb blonde simply because she's "girly" and comes from a fashion merchandising background, but Elle elegantly and intelligently proves them wrong. Without losing her personality or her sense of style, Elle uses her wit and charm to demonstrate to everyone at Harvard that she is more than capable of being an excellent lawyer and that she is more passionate about the law than she initially realized.
10. Hidden Figures (2016)
This biographical drama could actually work as the second movie in a double feature for either Barbie or Oppenheimer. Hidden Figures details the real-life story of three incredibly intelligent mathematicians who played a pivotal role in the early days of NASA's space program. The mathematicians were three African-American women named Mary Johnson (Janelle Monae), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer), and Katherine G. Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), and none of them had an easy time climbing the NASA ladder in the early 1960s. Despite the professional, racial, and gender barriers these women had to cross to be taken seriously, they managed to ensure that their work achieved what it was meant to. They are responsible for the calculations and science behind America's first crewed orbital spaceflight that occurred in 1962. It fits the biographical and innovation aspect of Oppenheimer while fitting in with the female empowerment aspect of Barbie.
9. The Truman Show (1998)
Peter Weir's introspective dramedy The Truman Show is another film that inspired Greta Gerwig during the making of Barbie. Gerwig was even granted the opportunity to get on the phone with Weir prior to filming, so she could pick his brain about the way he shot his film. He actually advised her not to shoot outside with lights hung above them because it would get too hot.
The film revolves around its titular main character Truman (Jim Carrey) as he goes about his average life as an insurance salesman with little to no changes to his daily routine. He never even leaves his idyllic lakeside town. It isn't until Truman finally starts to notice some of the strange things about his hometown and the residents in it that he suspects there is something off about the life he leads. Truman's entire life has been globally broadcast as a reality show where the only person who doesn't know he's on a show is Truman himself. The journey Truman goes through to discover who he really is without the constraints of the world that was created for him is reminiscent of the journey of self-discovery Barbie embarks on.
8. Schindler's List (1993)
Ralph Fiennes and Liam Neeson in Schindler's ListUniversal Pictures Oppenheimer is a devastating, breathtaking cinematic achievement that unflinchingly recounts the atrocities of war and human nature. It is not the only film that can be described this way, as Steven Spielberg's 1993 film Schindler's List fits this bill completely. Set against the backdrop of the worst atrocity to come out of World War II, the film centers around industrialist Oskar Schindler in German-occupied Poland as he grows increasingly concerned for his Jewish colleagues after witnessing their persecution by the Nazis.
The heartbreaking film is based on the real-life Schindler who went from a greedy German businessman to an unlikely humanitarian who felt compelled to aid the Jewish population by turning his factory into a refuge spot. The biographical drama makes you feel the weight of the barbaric reign of the Nazis and the irrevocable trauma they caused. The use of black and white conveys the depressing environment of the time period and provides a somber tone that sticks with the viewer in the over three-hour runtime.
7. The Wizard of Oz (1939)
The influence of The Wizard of Oz is evident throughout the entirety of Barbie. From the vibrant set pieces to the elaborate costume design, the presence of the classic Golden Age film is constant. Dorothy's journey from Kansas to Oz is essentially Barbie's journey from Barbieland to California in reverse. Dorothy is out of place in Oz and doesn't understand the way this magical land works, just as Barbie is entirely unfamiliar with the way society operates in the real world. The painted skies and painted backdrops of the Emerald City inspired the approach to have Barbieland look like it was designed in the '30s or '40s. The film is even shown to be playing at the movie theater in Barbieland as it's shown on the marquee. Gerwig and the crew even traded the iconic Yellow Brick Road for the Pink Brick Road to fit Barbie's traditional aesthetic.
6. A Beautiful Mind (2001)
Ron Howard's biopic about genius mathematician John Nash (Russell Crowe) details his incredible achievements in mathematics while dealing with his ongoing battle with schizophrenia. Similar to Robert Oppenheimer, Nash was extremely smart and the best at what he did. Nash had a very analytical brain and made a significant discovery early on in his career. He is credited with a concept in game theory called Nash Equilibrium.
Essentially, the theory explains that the optimal outcome in a game is when there is no incentive for a player to deviate from his initial strategy, even if they know their opponent's strategy. Despite discovering this, he quickly found himself on a painful self-discovery journey that resulted in personal tragedies after accepting secret work in cryptography. As A Beautiful Mind indicates, It wasn't until much later in his life and career that he finally overcame his struggles and received a Nobel Peace Prize.
5. Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen (2004)
Mary Elizabeth "Lola" Steppe (Lindsay Lohan) from the Disney movie Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen is the ultimate dreamer. It may seem like an obscure choice to feature in this list, but Lola's constant daydreaming and fantasizing about her life would actually make for a great double feature after watching Barbie. Lola is an artsy, music-loving teenage girl from Manhattan that is absolutely crushed when her divorced mother moves her and her younger sisters to the suburbs of New Jersey.
Convinced her cultural lifestyle is done now that she's in the suburbs, she creates elaborate stories about her life in New York once she starts high school in the town of Dellwood, which she refers to as "Deadwood." She continues to make her former New York life seem as spectacular and tragic as she can, even telling her new friend Ella (Alison Pill) that her father died tragically in a motorcycle accident when in reality he was alive in the city. Lola's fantasies are often reminiscent of grand Hollywood musicals from the '50s and often have an almost cartoonish effect similar to those in Barbie. To Lola, leaving Manhattan and moving to Jersey would end her cultural and entertaining lifestyle. It's similar to Barbie leaving Barbieland and immediately feeling out of place, but it ended up being exactly what they needed.
4. Hiroshima Mon Amour (1959)
The French film Hiroshima Mon Amour is a gut-wrenching drama that focuses on the tumultuous romance between a French actress and a married Japanese architect who share their differing opinions on war. Elle (Emanuelle Riva) is in Japan to make a film about peace and the impact of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. She meets Lui (Eiji Okada), the Japanese architect who lost his family in the bombing.
Over the span of many hours, the lovers turned friends recount their past romances and life experiences through numerous deep conversations. Their stories of love and war intertwine as they ponder the destruction wrought by the atomic bomb. The attraction and desire between the two bring about conversations about the devastation romance can wreak upon a person that parallels their feelings about the war and the bombing. It is an emotional, tragic, beautiful story of two people who experienced one of the most horrific events in history in very different ways, and their pain in remembering and fear of forgetting results in a poignant romance.
3. Little Women (2019)
Watching one of Greta Gerwig's previous directorial efforts after seeing her biggest film to date is ideal for becoming familiar with her style and the stories that drive her to make more films. Her 2019 adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's cherished 1868 novel Little Women encapsulates the themes of the stories Gerwig wants to tell. Gerwig's films always revolve around coming-of-age from the female perspective in some shape or form. Little Women follows the lives of four sisters in the 1800s spanning from childhood to early adulthood. It follows the sisters through shared heartbreak, first loves, societal pressures, and the desire to make more of life than what's expected. It's a celebration of womanhood and demonstrates how well Gerwig writes capable women.
2. Dunkirk (2017)
If you are going to watch one of Gerwig's films after seeing Barbie, then you should probably watch one of Christopher Nolan's films after seeing Oppenheimer. The film that has the closest relation to Oppenheimer is his 2017 World War II war drama Dunkirk. Of course, the film follows one of the most important battles of the war, the Battle of Dunkirk in the spring of 1940. Germany advanced its troops to France, trapping thousands of Allied soldiers on the beaches of Dunkirk and leaving them completely exposed to the Germans. Just as he did with Oppenheimer, Nolan utilized the use of different perspectives to tell the story of this historical battle.
The first perspective follows the actual soldiers on the beach and takes place over the course of a week. The second perspective takes place on a rescue boat and follows one soldier over the course of a day as he tries to rescue soldiers on the beach. The third and final perspective takes place over just one hour in the air during aerial combat between British and German air forces. It covers a completely different side of the war but keeps you in the same mindset.
1. Grave of the Fireflies (1989)
One of the most emotionally difficult Studio Ghibli films to get through, Grave of the Fireflies tells the story of a young boy and his younger sister as they try to survive on their own in Japan during the American bombings on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The bombings separated 14-year-old Seita and four-year-old Setsuko from their parents, forcing them to trek through the war-torn landscape of Japan as fires caused by the bombings continue to spread. The children struggle to find shelter, food, and water in their long journey away from their family, leaving them nearly destitute. It's a powerful, important, utterly heartbreaking film about the tragedies that war causes and proves that animation can be used for more than just telling children's fairytales.'

so wait I don't understand what is your stand on the cruella's movie ahaha
I simply don’t have one because I have not seen the movie yet 😂
From what we have seen from the trailer, I liked the aesthetic, that’s for sure. The “girlboss puppies killer” memes are great, but I want to wait and see if the movie is really gonna go down that road, or if it is just marketing. The movie could be okay, could be bad, who knows. I certainly don’t. I am not gonna give d*sney my money either way sooo 🤷♀️

Fuck it im doing it
My 2020 top 20 movie list
(Disclaimer that most of these weren't made in 2020 but I just watched them this year. These aren't also really in a very particular order but they are lowkey ranked) (i also had to be choosey with the images i out cause of the limit, but yeah dont mind that)
20. The perfection
The plot twist in this movie is *chefs kiss* there was no way for me to predict the ending, bug as far as thrillers goes, it is brilliant. And also, lesbians. It can be a pretty triggering movie for ab*se and general gore, but really I love the pacing and the thrill of it.
19. The shining
Ah yes, a classic horror, and though I may feel iffy about Stanley Kubrick, this movie was pretty good. But I am saying this as a person that didn't read the book. The blood rushing down the hallway was really my favourite visual on the movie. It was a movie that made me felt genuinely scared while watching it, like hiding behind my blanket but also sweating scared, the suspense was pretty thrilling though
18. Doctor Sleep
Man do I love Danny Torrance, and Abra, fuck I love them both. Again, I never read the book, but my ignorance keeps me in bliss. The visuals of this movie are also great, and the emotions this movie puts through? I'm just glad headcanons exist, but really I did enjoy this movie even if it wasn't what I was expecting.
17. Birds of prey
Harley deserved a movie, and the fact that it was directed by a woman makes me love it so much more because we just got to see harley doing the things that she fucking wanted. This movie is wlw solidarity, from Margot robbie to Mary Elizabeth Winstead, women with crossbows? Sign me the fuck up. And from all the DC films I've seen, it's so much brighter, in the visual sense, there's colour! There's character! And not everyone is just brooding in darkness, its the type of movie that would make me actually watch and enjoy DC films.
16. Charlie's angels
Firstly, lesbians. Thank you. But really, its a good action comedy and really I'll jump at the chance to see women kick ass.
15. My octopus teacher
I've never cried over an octopus before, so that was an experience. And even though this is technically not a movie, I still wanted to put it on here cause it was really just a great documentary, especially since it happened in my home country and im very oddly proud of that fact.
14. Knives out
Murder mystery and chris evans go so well together. I have made a longer post, but to sum it up, like most of the movies on this list. The colours and the pacing and just the atmosphere of the movie was spectacular, and even though I couldve guessed the ending, I was still on the edge of my seat for most of it
13. Ready or not
I love this new wave of eat the rich media. Samara weaving is a great actor and I am in love with her and this whole movie. It really was something that I hadn't actually seen before and the fact that the whole curse thing at the end was true was really just wow. Along with eat the rich, I love the feral female energy lately, and the whole white clothing slowly but surely being covered in blood.
12. Geralds game
The line "youre only made of moonlight" lives in my head rent free. This movie, was really an experience and for a movie with only two people in it for the majority, it is really well done. I'll always feel iffy about a man writing a woman's experience (specifically) but I do love the way this movie went, yeah I hated the "Hand" scene, but I still enjoyed the after math of it.
11. The old gaurd
Again, more lesbians, what more could I ask for? The concept for this movie is brilliant, immortal mercenaries is the only trope I want from now on, and found family.
10. Parasite
Again with the eat the rich. This movie was mindblowing, and just, the imagery!! And im glad they didn't dub it in English cause fuck that, I enjoyed it perfectly with subtitles.
9. song of the sea
This movie, this movie! Is so precious and I had that song stuck in my head for days.the name Saoirse is also so oddly pleasing to hear. This story is so beautiful, the music is amazing and it makes me want to be a fae.
8. Scott pilgrim vs the world
This movie really did pass what my expectations for what I thought it was gonna be, the music was amazing, the transitions and editing style was *chefs kiss* and even though I felt like I was in a fever dream the whole time, it'd be a fever dream I'd gladly rewatch.
7. The imitation game
Thank you Alan Turing. This movie recked me, like emotionally, I was a mess when I was done with it, but damn was it good, like I really just felt something while watching it, I mean most.of the movies on this list did, but this one just really hit me in some way.
6. Klaus
At least there are still good Christmas movies being made. Actually, I was a mess for this one too, the second that child got that sleigh thing it was over for my emotions. The whole sirge of turning Santa into this big macho dude really is working out and that's how Santa should always be depicted. I could gush about the animation style of this movie all fucking day, I love it so much (and the shadows!!! Ahh the shadows!) It really is just incredible.
5. I'm thinking of ending things
Hey man, I knew this was gonna fuck me up just by looking at the trailer, but there was absolitley no way to prepare for whatever was about to happen. Even after watching it, I have no idea what happened. But I still found it great, I love movies that give me an existential crisis.
4. Spirited away
All I wanted to do, was eat everything in that movie, even if it would turn me into a pig, holy hells this movie is good. There was just this satisfying appeal to it that I can't quite put into words. Its beautiful like everything studio ghibli movie ever.
3. The Willoughbys
I never knew I needed a found family movie with a bunch of kids that were already family. I've made a longer post about this movie, and I dont think I could really say more, this movie is so fucking touching and I love the direction it went in plot wise.
2. Howl's moving castle
Again, I may not have understood wtf was going on, but I'll be damned if I didn't love every second of it. There is no doubt that this movie is stunning, and I really am a suckered for early 2000's 2d animation, because!!! Look at it!!! Studio Ghibli films always just floor me with how good they look. I really wanna read the book, because I would absolutley love to see a feral Sophie giving howl shit for crying over hair.
1. Us
This movie will always be my no. 1 it is amazing and I love everything jordan peele has done with his movies. Especially for it to have a full black cast, and those black people have darker skin than what is normally shown in media. The feral but also calculated nature of each character is beautiful and nothing can ever make me hate this movie
I hope you enjoyed this incoherent "review" of my favourite movies I watched in 2020, its been a shit show and movies really have been a place of comfort for me. But stay safe and happy new year!

CRUELLA (2021), directed by Craig Gillespie
I'll try to be concise because I am always a mess at organizing structured posts. I know I'll fail but I needed to share some stuff. So yeah I will spoil everything, even the main plotline. I'll also talk about music, shots, colors etc. My opinion in general is summed up in the last paragraph, scroll down to it if you want to read it. People talking about this movie without watching it piss me off, and how people online act stupidly towards movie just piss me off in general.
I just watched Cruella. Why ? Because of many posts angry at Disney and this movie. Especially on tumblr. The famous "lol her mother got killed by Dalmatians and that's why she hates them Disney you ruined everything."
And this is the embodiment of "I've never watched the movie but someone said that on the Internet so I'll reblog it without trying to understand anything please laugh at my post and reblog lol boycott Disney they kill the cinema industry".
No, I don't like Disney. I hate the idea itself of a corporation owning artistic creations and can do basically whatever they want with movies, actors, and everyone involved in the creation of movies. I hate the agressive capitalism they are the embodiment of. Because yes, Disney produces movies because it permits them to sell goodies. Disney is here to get money, not to create art.
But people criticizing a movie without watching it, so without knowing anything of what is inside it just to mock Disney ? That's disgusting too. Stupid.
Then you'll misa many things that are interesting and that even made me sit back correctly on my seat and open my mouth in surprise. A pleased surprise. Not a gasp, just a natural reaction as I appreciate this movie.
You want an interesting dynamic between two powerful female characters ? It is perfectly done here : Cruella vs the Baroness. You want represention of POC and how they are treated like shit by white people abusing them by integrating it into clashes between social classes ? It is there, not only with Jasper or Maya, but with all the maids treated like shit by the Baroness for example. They don't have any line of dialogue, but you want Justice for them. The Baroness literally throws a chair at a maid, hurts her, treats everyone like slaves but everyone still obeys because she is all mighty, eliminates opponents, intimidates, fire everyone if they disappoint her. Everyone's life depends on her mood or interests.
The acting was really good. I'd be disgusted to hear that actors and actresses suffer from some form of boycott against this movie, or get laughed at because they were in this movie. I saw it in French yes (dubs were wonderful btw, never seen such a high quality lips sync) but Emma Stone's facial expressions were really great especially at a scene where she confesses her discoveries in front of a fontain in London. The way it is shot too, with a slightly trembling camera circling around her without any cut made justice to her acting. Thanks to this choice it lets the scene breathing, and you can feel how great the actors are. However in some others it looked really close to Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad to me, when her character has nervous/angry facial expressions but it still works. She really nailed the dichotomy between Estella and Cruella, because don't forget she literally has to play two roles at a time.
Also. Colors. You know, Cruella is associated with black and white, dota on Dalmatians, black amd white hair etc. And one shot caught my eye, you know, the kind of details telling something subtlely on camera, without any word needed and making you think "hey people behind it had some interesting ideas and know their job". When Cruella (still Estella at this moment) enters the workshop after she got hired by the Baroness everyone is in black and white. The ground too. And what else is interesting on this ground ? Its whiteness with the black dots on it, the camera above everyone.
Now we can talk about the special effects.
Oh boy. Oh boy. Aouch.
The three Dalmatians we see from the beginning are owned by the Baroness. Basically they are really agressive, growling. They have to attack the little Estella when she was a young girl. So they were artificial for this movie. But it looks so fake. Same for the little dog owned by Jasper and Horace, the two thefts when he has to attack a guy. I understand that sending three actual dogs to chase after a little girl would have been too extreme. I know. But really they could have made something for that. Maybe make them less openly damgerous-looking. Just growling or something. Oh and the special effects at the very end of the movie. Aouch aouch aouch. When Cruella gets pushed down the cliff by the Baroness, uses her skirt as a parachute (yes this passage was wtf I wanted to facepalm) and fall into the sea. EVERYTHING looks fake : water, the parachute, the physics, her weight, the wind... it really even looked outdated it was weird. Really don't try to make too complicated scenes if thia turns into nonsense, especially into too expensive nonsense that spoils a correct ending.
This movie was... good. Not great. Not bad. Good. It had good ideas. It had more personality than what I was expecting from something created by Disney honestly. (I'm in love with the fake credits with the song created for this movie, watch it if you can). I also loved what they did with all the dresses there were genuine great ideas.
This is all I want to tell about the movie for now. There is much to say of course, I could have talked about what I think about the music (that I am more skeptical about than anything and that doesn't have much personality), detail much more about the attempt to create great shots (it was interesting without beimg transcendent), Cruella getting more and more room into Estella's personality and how it scared her friends. Oh and no romance. THANK YOU. Finally a movie without romance needed to make characters evolve and question themselves. Thank you.
Here was my chaotic review without being one. It was more to explain why I am angry to comments focusing on one aspect of a mpvie without watching it, without CONTEXTING it (because heh there's a twist too aboit the whole "Dalmatians killed her mother lol") , without taking time to talk aboit the positive things just to trash talk about Disney. Guys. As I said I hate the idea of corporations owning a big part of the artistic industry. But please don't be stupid. Stop talking shit when you don't even take the time to watch a movie. Stop that. Stop being dishonest towards a movie where they actually tried several interesting things.

Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)
The day has finally arrived; it’s the Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), was it really worth the hype?
Man. That’s a long title.
When it was first announced that Harley Quinn would be getting a solo movie, I was excited. The Jester was going to get her moment on the big screen but as reports came out, so did more information. This wasn’t a solo Harley Quinn movie instead it was a team.
Starring Dinah Lance aka Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell),Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Roman Sionis aka Black Mask (Ewan McGregor),Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez), Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco) and Victor Zsasz (Chris Messina). That sounded great. A list of character who finally were having their big screen moment.
Unfortunely as promo started; the trailer felt underwhelming. Black Mask reminded me of Suicide Squad, Joker. Victor Zsasz didn’t look initiating just creepy. The promo felt more like it was just all about Harley and less about everyone else.
Even the so-called leaked behind the scenes footage were heavily Harley Quinn. I felt like the other characters were only there so people wouldn’t get sick of Harley too quickly.
I’m familiar with some of these and I would have loved to see more promo on them; even the ones I’m not familiar with, it would’ve been nice to see more of them.
I know google exists but that wasn’t the point.
So, I stopped calling it Birds of Prey instead just dubbing it the Harley Quinn movie.
After following all the promo, I walked in with no expectations. My thoughts was this would be like Suicide Squad, hype all these characters only to do them dirty.
As I walked out of the cinema, my thought was…...
Holy Freakin’ ‘mazebells!!
Definitely can’t take my sisters to this movie. It’s too graphic for young kids. Imagine Deadpool meats The Equalizer meets the Godfather.
I had read an article on how they’d plan to do Birds of Prey, on paper (well via text on an online article) it made no sense at all, I was quite confused.
So, I was full on expecting a HUGE WTF mess. A mess almost as bad as Suicide Squad instead I got one hell of a rollercoaster.
From start to finish; Harley Quin takes the audience on a bender, not just from her break up with Joker but also why she is on the run and how she came to meet four incredible ladies.
Though my point still stands; this isn’t Birds of Prey.
It’s a Harley Quinn movies with other character who just happen to be in Gotham.
Huntress, Renee, Cassandra and Dinah were all fully fleshed out and each made sense, even suggesting an officially birds of prey movie would be on the cards.
While the males; Victor and Roman were just there. Victor wasn’t intimidating, just creepy and Roman clearly had parent issues, which plays into the trap of ‘ Doesn’t like being told no’. BORING!
So, I was quite disappointed in them two. I can handle Victor Zsasz; Anthony Carrigan terrified me as this villain in fox’s Gotham but instead of being terrified of a villain; Chris Messina played Victor as if he had no other reason to be there. Why was he even in the story? He was barely used as a threat.
Black Mask aka Roman Sionis, again. What the hell. I said this before and I’ll say it again, he reminded me of Suicide Squad Joker; only difference was Roman is a pathetic villain.
Because Harley Quinn was telling the story, it was a rollercoaster; Done in her style. Normally something like this wouldn’t make sense but Birds of Prey made it work.
I fall in love with multiple things throughout this movie and I’m surprised. Each fight sequence broke clichés, giving us various styles on how action should play out; even the props used were all over the place but quite fun to see in action.
The costumes. As a cosplayer, I would’ve loved to be a fly on the wall to watch Erin Benach and her team worked their magic.
The hair, the makeup, the stunts. I couldn’t fault a thing especially since I’m a sucker for stunts.
I would love for Birds of Prey to have a sequel but I’m curious how’d it’d go. Though rumours have it that Margot Robbie wants this to be a trilogy with not just this one but also Gotham City Sirens and Birds of Prey vs Gotham City Sirens which is supposedly dubbed as the “Harley Quinn Trilogy”.
Oh, and I love how Harley’s sexuality wasn’t erased. Was that a tiny nod to Ivy?
Birds of Prey may have used flashbacks and clever editing to hide Joker, but this shows you that you don’t need the Prince of Crime as a villain for every story. As well as not needing to shove in Batman/Bruce Wayne for the sake of Gotham.
This movie gives nods to various Harley Quinn interpretations including Arleen Sorkin and giving nods to Suicide Squad (2016) while letting this Harley shine in a way we’d thought we’d never see on the big screen.
I would love to say Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is a must watch comic book movie but I won’t.
Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is quite graphically violent especially in the first twenty minutes.
I will say, if you can handle face peeling violence; you’re in for a treat.

What Do The 2020 Academy Award Nominees Think About Anime?
The 2020 Academy Awards are coming up soon this year, an event where we celebrate talent, craft and cinematic ingenuity while desperately trying to ignore the films that should've actually been nominated. And that's nice and all, but I feel like it's avoiding the REAL issue: What do the nominees think about anime and manga? I'm gonna run through the films that are up for Best Picture and see if any of the people involved with them have an interest in the most blessed of art forms.
FORD VS FERRARI
In 2017, Ford vs Ferrari director James Mangold basically gave us the X-Men equivalent of Lone Wolf and Cub with Logan. It was an aging samurai story filtered through a comic book movie lense and it was outstanding. But Mangold is definitely at least aware of anime, as he described the character of the assassin Yukio as "almost kind of sprung from the anime world" when promoting the predecessor to Logan, The Wolverine.
Meanwhile, stars Christian Bale and Matt Damon have both participated in the English dubs of Studio Ghibli films (Howl's Moving Castle and Ponyo, respectively.)
THE IRISHMAN
The internet spent most of 2019 in a tailspin over the fact that *gasp* famed director of crime dramas and psychological thrillers, Martin Scorsese, didn't care much for Age of Ultron. Sadly, he didn't also offer up his thoughts on Naruto.
The stars of The Irishman seem similarly disinterested. However, in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind, the Hitman Team includes a short, nervous, passionate member named "Pesci." And since "short," "nervous" and "passionate" tend to fit Joe Pesci's character description in most Scorsese films, there's a solid chance that it might be a homage.
JOJO RABBIT
Most notably, Taika Waititi was involved with a live action remake of Akira until fairly recently. However, due to his commitment to Thor: Love and Thunder and the Akira script taking a while to work out, the film has been pushed to a later date. Waititi still seems passionate about it though, as the original anime is apparently one of his favorite films.
JOKER
Sadly, neither Todd Phillips nor Joaquin Phoenix seemed to have much to say about anime, despite the absolute flood of fan art that occurs when you Google "anime joker." Break the silence, Joaquin! Tell us your opinion on DeviantArt!
LITTLE WOMEN
This well seems to be pretty dry, too, though producer Amy Pascal did oversee the extremely anime-influenced Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse, which is the best superhero film of the last decade.
MARRIAGE STORY
Though "Adam Driver anime" is another Google search that leads to plentiful results, the main attraction here is Scarlett Johansson and her relationship to the anime world. Notably, she starred in the live action version of Ghost in the Shell which had some nice visuals at times and, ummm, not much else to offer.
1917
Despite directing the most rad anime-looking sequence in any James Bond film (the fight scene in Shanghai in Skyfall,) 1917 director Sam Mendes hasn't talked about anime, like, ever. However star Mark Strong did voice Pod in Studio Ghibli's Arriety.
ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD
Obviously we're not going to be rushing to draw Crunchyroll Hime in a Pulp Fiction outfit any time soon, but director Quentin Tarantino isn't exactly averse to anime. Most notably, Kill Bill: Volume 1 included an anime sequence by Production I.G (the studio behind Psycho-Pass, Ghost in the Shell, and Haikyu!!), and Tarantino used to float the idea of maybe doing an anime prequel to the saga of the Bride. He also almost assisted with the English dub for Princess Mononoke.
Star Margot Robbie was once in talks to play Motoko in a live action Ghost in the Shell back in 2014, but the real treat here seems to be Leonardo DiCaprio's enthusiasm.
He told MTV in 2008 "I'm a big fan of Japanese anime" as he tried to get live action productions of Akira and Ninja Scroll going. So thanks for that, Leo. The mental image of you, surrounded by models and party guests in your mansion, telling everyone to "keep it down" because you're "tryin' to watch Evangelion" will be stuck with me forever.
PARASITE
This is my favorite film that's being nominated this year, but it gives us very little anime news. However, director Bong Joon-ho's Okja is the closest thing that we may ever get to a live action Studio Ghibli film, and if anyone wants to turn The Host and Snowpiercer (both terrific movies) into awesome anime series, I wouldn't diss the effort. In fact, just go watch Bong Joon-ho movies today: Parasite, Okja, Snowpiercer, The Host, Mother, Memories of Murder and the rest. The dude is our best modern director, so tell your boss that you're taking the day off. It's officially a Bong Joon-ho holiday.
Have you seen any of these films? Do you have any predictions for the winners? Let me know in the comments!

There's never a bad time to opt for a major hair transformation , but there's a certain kind of magic surrounding the start of a new decade that pretty much begs a nod toward reinvention —and the versatility of our strands serves as the perfect potential canvas. Whether you're looking to add some chic curveballs to your styling game, or are thinking about something more drastic (like dyeing your virgin hair ), 2020 is ready to foster some creative courage. That said, switching up your hair M.O. for the New Year doesn't necessarily have to require a huge uptick in maintenance. As pretty much all of our favorite celebrities have been demonstrating recently, some of the coolest haircuts on our radar also happen to fall considerably "low" on the maintenance meter. Because we're feeling inspired by all the cool crops, cuts, and fringe debuts, we rounded up seven low-maintenance haircuts celebs are prioritizing right now to serve as inspiration for your vision board. Plus, of course, the most-necessary products you'll need to perfect them at home. Keep scrolling! "The beauty of this look is that it can be cut for any hair type—just add texture with an undone feel," explains Ferreira's hairstylist, Laurie Heaps. "You can embrace your natural waves and curls, wear it straight, or switch it up by adding extra bends and dimension with hot tools." Whether you choose to wear this low-maintenance style curly or straight, Heaps recommends using a texturizing spray like the below from Redken, which will lend lightweight texture and lift to your cut. According to celebrity hairstylist and owner of 454 North Salon in West Hollywood Cervando Maldonado, Robbie's mid-length cut is not only a low-maintenance option, but it's also one of the biggest trends he's forecasting for 2020. Plus, as Ana De Armas (below) demonstrates, this cut has major legs for thicker hair textures, as well. "I recently cut Margot's hair from past her shoulders to an inch past her collarbone, which is a fresh new take on the one-length vibe," Maldonado tells us. "The length gives you versatility in styling (low pony, updos, etc.) yet when worn down, it can look loose and effortless or sleek and polished depending on how you style it." Celebrity hairstylist Bryce Scarlett, who styled Robbie's hair for the 2020 Golden Globes, shows us how to get waves, here. Though she had been working back-grazing dreads for a while, a couple of months prior to award season, Zoë Kravitz opted for a more low-maintenance haircut she's worked (and we love) before—a piece-y, imperfect pixie cut by self-proclaimed "Hair MacGyver" Nikki Nelms. We're obsessed, and it really shows of Kravitz's killer bone structure, no? For a pixie, a texturizing molding paste like this option from Oribe is key—it will gift fine textures with an extra hit of volume and oomph to encourage a piece-y look like Kravitz's, but also lends enough control and smoothing power if you have a thicker texture. Jada Pinkett Smith and Charlize Theron have the exact same haircut (ahem, and color!) right now, and frankly, we're SO into it. A low-maintenance, middle-ground option between a pixie and bob, the look lends easy versatility depending on how you style it—part it to the side for some drama, push it forward for a pseudo-bowl cut, or push it back for a relaxed and textured look that will stay off your face. To ensure your cut keeps its volume regardless of how you style, we recommend priming your strands with a volumizing elixir like the below from Virtue Labs. Cher-inspired ultra-long strands have been having a major moment, and as a chic antithesis to another huge cut of the moment (a sleek, blunt bob), this low-maintenance option offers a cool alternative for someone who's looking for longer hair this year, and not shorter. Obviously, extensions are an instantaneous option for creating length, but if you're looking to go all the way naturally, this cut will just require some regular trims (to keep those ends healthy and far from splitsville) and some TLC-gifting formulas. We're big fans of Leonor Greyl's cult-loved pre-shampoo oil treatment to keep hair in tip-top shape to help encourage growth. Also, we can't get over Kerry Washington's braided, super-long strands paired with a few shiny accessories, below. Who knew the infamous villain from Shrek would ever yield major influence as far as hair trends? But it's true—with what has been dubbed by the editorial community as The Farquad Flip—an iteration of the blunt bob with certain style nods like a straightforward middle part and flipped-under ends has had an epic rise in popularity. Everyone from January Jones, Kaia Gerber, and Selena Gomez to Kylie Jenner, Khloé Kardashian, and Da'Vine Joy Randolph have been working the style. "It's an easy, chic look," explained Jesus Guerrero, the stylist behind the Kardashian-Jenner flip to Elle. "I love how simple it is, yet it exudes so much power." Of course, this look starts with a cut—you'll need a blunt, low-maintenance bob or lob, and then it will come down to your styling tools. Guerrero says brushing your cut with a small round brush is paramount in order to re-create the celeb favorited flipped-in vibe. Okay, so not ALL category of bangs are created equally on the maintenance scale. But if you're looking for a chic take on the trends that are blowing up within the celebrity set, one that is (surprisingly) very chill as far as your care-taking requirements, look to the French girl–inspired curtain bang trend. (Model Jourdan Dunn has debuted multiple versions of the look that we've been loving.) "Curtain bangs are definitely making a comeback as more retro styles gain popularity," celebrity hairstylist Andrew Fitzsimons, told us here. "What I love about curtain bangs is that they're low maintenance and can easily be grown out into face-framing layers—perfect for any face shape and suits every hair type." Using a dry shampoo to refresh quick-to-grease bangs is key, and you can also spritz your lengths to create more volume. We prefer Amika's cult-loved formula, which has zero color-disrupting residue. How Lady Gaga proved Hollywood’s haters wrong
A star is reborn. When Lady Gaga triumphantly swanned to the Golden Globes stage in 2016 to say her first-ever performing award, the second turned a meme. However for an embarrassing cause: the best way Leonardo DiCaprio appeared to snicker out loud, then roll his eyes when her identify was referred to as as finest actress in a restricted tv collection for “American Horror Story: Resort.” Gaga is tipped to win a Globe once more this Sunday — lead actress within the drama class, for her function in “A Star Is Born.” However this time, nobody will likely be laughing besides her. Proper now, the English betting website Bovada has her within the result in win, with 2 to five odds. Even after the singer received her first Globe, many nonetheless weren’t satisfied of her skills. (The Publish’s personal TV editor Michael Starr wrote: “The truth that picket, vamping newbie Lady Gaga received … speaks volumes in regards to the inventive hollowness of those awards. They’re a joke.”) And Gaga herself admitted at a red-carpet look for “A Star Is Born” that she wished to be an actress even earlier than pursuing a music profession — however, she mentioned, “I used to be dangerous at auditions. I by no means obtained a job.” Now, due to a mix of performing classes — she ready for the movie with the well-respected trainer Elizabeth Kemp, who additionally coached Gaga’s co-star Bradley Cooper earlier than she handed away in 2017 — and the celebs aligning, Hollywooden has modified its tune about her. “Gaga has an interior incandescence {that a} star has. By exhibiting the depth of her vulnerability, she gave a superb efficiency. I believe she’s obtained a huge future: the uncommon comet that comes alongside,” mentioned veteran Hollywood producer Howard Rosenman (“Name Me By Your Identify”). “She’s transcended to Streisand fable stage.” ‘She’s transcended to Streisand fable stage.’ And one Academy Awards voter advised The Publish that Gaga, 32, would be the belle of the Oscars come February. He additionally expects her to take advantage of the second for all it’s value. “She will certainly be nominated, for performing and for [the hit ‘A Star Is Born’ song] ‘Shallow,’ ” mentioned the voter. “She’ll little doubt wind up singing on the Oscars, too. She’s no dummy — and neither’s the Academy.” One huge a part of Lady Gaga’s new success could also be attributed to what an ideal match she was for “A Star Is Born.” Born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta in Manhattan, she was something however an in a single day success. She grew up on the Higher West Facet, the daughter of an entrepreneur dad and stay-at-home mother (the 2 now personal Joanne Trattoria on West 68th Avenue), and commenced taking part in open-mic nights whereas nonetheless a scholar on the all-girls Convent of the Sacred Coronary heart faculty. At New York College’s Tisch College of the Arts, she fashioned the SGBand with some pals and in addition performed solo acoustic reveals round city. (It’s now exhausting to think about Lady Gaga opening for second-tier alt-rock act Nada Surf on the South Avenue Seaport, however that’s precisely what occurred in 2005). It was her boyfriend on the time, music producer Rob Fusari, who claims to have dubbed her Lady Gaga, impressed by the Queen track “Radio Ga Ga.” Fusari additionally helped her nab a solo report take care of Jam in 2007, after she had dropped out of NYU, though that rapidly evaporated and he or she ended up writing songs behind the scenes for Britney Spears (“Quicksand”) and Jennifer Lopez (“Hypnotico”). It was as soon as she met efficiency artist Lady Starlight — her real-life, avant-garde Jackson Maine, if you’ll — and commenced taking part in Decrease East Facet golf equipment, together with The Bitter Finish and Mercury Lounge, that issues started to vary. By 2009 she had taken over the pop world together with her smash hit debut album “The Fame” and a brand new glambot-meets-extraterrestrial persona. So Gaga’s efficiency as Ally, an obscure singer-songwriter who makes her technique to full-fledged stardom, is especially poignant as a result of it parallels her personal life — however manages to keep away from any glint of Gaga glam. “Gaga selected to underplay this function, [which was] a superb selection on her half,” Hollywood energy publicist Howard Bragman advised The Publish. “Ally in road garments speaks louder than her taking part in an enormous blown-out pop star. [Gaga] understood if she made Ally something like Gaga, she’d take the viewers out of the story,” mentioned “A Star is Born” costume designer Erin Benach. “So we eschewed the Gaga trappings and seemed again at iconic pop-star characters in film historical past: Whitney Houston in ‘The Bodyguard,’ Judy Garland within the second model of ‘Star is Born,’ Barbra Streisand [in the third].” Benach, who refers back to the music celebrity by her actual identify, additionally advised The Publish, “Stefani’s a really actual, big-hearted, honest human being. And that’s what comes by way of in her efficiency.” However solely a handful of feminine pop stars have ascended to film stardom: Cher, Bette Midler, Streisand. Jennifer Hudson had one hit movie; so did Houston and Diana Ross. Dolly Parton, bless her coronary heart, all the time performs Dolly. Bradley Cooper, left, and Lady Gaga in a scene from “A Star is Born.”AP After which there’s Madonna. The icon appears particularly threatened by the continued ascendance of Gaga. Madonna grabbed nice evaluations for her 1985 performing debut, “Desperately Searching for Susan,” and respectable ones for “Evita” and “Dick Tracy” within the ’90s. Nevertheless it’s been all downhill from there for Madonna in Hollywood, with “Swept Away” incomes a surprisingly paltry $600,000 on the field workplace and her 2011 debut directing effort, “W.E.” receiving an embarrassing 13 p.c on Rotten Tomatoes. Even earlier than Gaga’s Hollywood flip, Madonna was sniping at her youthful counterpart, calling Gaga’s music “reductive” whereas additionally suggesting that Gaga was ripping her off: “I’m a very huge fan of [”Born This Way”],” Madonna mentioned on Brazilian TV. “I’m glad that I helped Gaga write it.” Gaga has copped to doing the one factor that may drive Madonna craziest: pay her little consideration. “I believe she’s extra aggravated that I’m not upset that she doesn’t like me,” Gaga advised Howard Stern. And now that Gaga is having her awards-season second, Madonna has coincidentally upped her p.r. recreation — hiring Hollywood mega-publicist Kelly Bush forward of her upcoming album and stunning Web wags together with her New Yr’s Eve look on the Village’s Stonewall Inn, the place she gave the impression to be sporting a really enhanced new rear finish. However, regardless of all that, Gaga could nab the one factor Madonna doesn’t have: an Oscar. “The Academy is now youthful, extra numerous [than in the Madonna era] and so they perceive that Gaga will carry within the viewers — and the clicks,” mentioned the Oscars voter. In the meantime, Gaga is conserving a watch out for her subsequent film function whereas additionally conserving her music profession going at full steam. She’s in residency at Las Vegas’ Park MGM Theater till Feb. 3, performing two separate reveals: “Enigma,” which works all out with the shock and awe of pyrotechnics, robotic driving and day-glo wigs galore, in addition to the extra sedate “Lady Gaga Jazz and Piano.” After that, there are the Grammys on Feb. 10 — she’s up for 5 awards — and count on to see her hitting the Oscars marketing campaign exhausting earlier than the large present. She’ll return to Vegas in June. ‘She will do no matter she desires to do due to her work ethic.’ There’s additionally a marriage to plan. She’s engaged to her CAA agent, Christian Carino — he additionally represents Margot Robbie, Saoirse Ronan and Julianne Moore — whom she started relationship in 2017, two years after splitting with actor Taylor Kinney. Gaga not too long ago advised “E.T.” she desires a “massively elaborate marriage ceremony.” No less than one individual thinks she will do all of it. Famed songwriter Diane Warren, a nine-time Oscar winner who penned “Why Did You Do That” for “A Star Is Born” attributes Gaga’s success to pure exhausting work. “It’s expertise, after all, however Gaga’s so good. She will do no matter she desires to do due to her work ethic,” Warren mentioned. “She works with a vocal coach two hours a day and had the perfect performing coach for the film.” And if Gaga desires one thing, she goes for it. When she felt the urge to stay her toe within the shallow finish of the performing pool, she rang up producer Ryan Murphy and requested him to pen her a bit of half — which morphed into her “American Horror Story: Resort” function. Producer Rosenman admitted: “I’d like to develop one thing for her. I don’t assume the precise script will simply materialize. It must be developed for and by her.” Whereas she’s open to studying scripts, Gaga has revealed that her targets for a second or third film are epic. As she not too long ago advised the Bangkok Publish: “I’m in search of roles that may blast me to outer house.” Share this: https://nypost.com/2019/01/05/how-lady-gaga-proved-hollywoods-haters-wrong/ The post How Lady Gaga proved Hollywood’s haters wrong appeared first on My style by Kartia. https://www.kartiavelino.com/2019/01/how-lady-gaga-proved-hollywoods-haters-wrong.html

Dubbed Task Force X, the criminals unite to battle a mysterious and powerful entity, while the diabolical Joker launches an evil agenda of his own.”
Because of the anticipated release of Justice League on Friday November 17, I’ve decided to write reviews of all of the movies that make up the DC Extended Universe so far. There have been a lot of talks about how long this franchise will last, but as a comic book fan, and huge lover of movies, I never want movies to be bad. I’m hoping that it’ll be amazing. You can find the dates for when the reviews for the other DCEU movie will be released at the link here. I wrote the review for Wonder Woman around the time it came out, and it can be found here.

Cast and Crew
The third movie in the DC Extended Universe – Suicide Squad was written and directed by David Ayer. Ayer’s previous work as a director includes 2012’s ‘End of Watch’ and 2014’s ‘Fury’. He’s since been attached to direct ‘Gotham City Sirens’ as well as directing the Netflix movie ‘Bright’ that will be coming out later this year. His work as a writer includes ‘The Fast and the Furious’ in 2001, 2003’s ‘S.W.A.T.’, as well as the two films he directed mentioned above – Fury and End of Watch.
From Left to Right: Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Karen Fukuhara as Katana, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg, Will Smith as Deadshot and Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang – Source: Warner Brothers Entertainment
The cast for Suicide Squad includes Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, David Harbour, Jared Leto, Common, Jai Courtney, Ezra Miller, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Cara Delevingne, Joel Kinnaman, Adam Beach, Karen Fukuhara, Ben Affleck, Alain Chanoine and Ike Barinholtz.
Releasing Suicide Squad as the next DC movie after Batman v Superman was DC’s answer to Marvel’s surprise hit ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’. It tried to put together a team of ragtag villains and make them save the world, and that’s where it failed to comprehend the magic that Guardians had managed to create. They didn’t focus on the characters enough, or the team as a whole, rather making the movie the Deadshot and Harley Quinn show.
To me, the first 45 minutes of the movie is really good, I thought they were doing a good job in setting up the ‘why’ they were put together, and gave brief glimpses to the characters themselves. I felt like this movie was going to be fun and a step in the right direction with the story, however the next 90 minutes destroyed that feeling, and in my opinion shat the bed hard. The quality of the movie went from a good 7/10 in the first 45 minutes to the next 90 minutes being a 3 or 4 out of 10.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
The casting of Will Smith as Deadshot was something that I both enjoyed a lot, while also wishing that he was never cast in the role. I love Will Smith as an actor ever since his Fresh Prince days, and I’ve never not enjoyed his performances. I’ve disliked a few of his movies, but it was never his fault as an actor. This movie is supposed to be an ensemble movie, like I mention above, and with the casting of an ‘A – List’ star, it shifts the focus away from the others, and that character becomes more demanding of attention, and that’s exactly what happened in this movie. I feel like they didn’t need a superstar in the role, but someone who would have the talent to play the character. I feel like the movie would have been better if there was no superstar in the role, or if he would have kept the mask on for the entire film, and show his face a couple of times, but because of the known star in the film, you have to show his face to appeal to general audiences, and Deadshot became Will Smith.
Casting Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn was an amazing decision because she played the character so well, but the problem was with how they used Harley Quinn, rather than the actress taking away from the character. The usage of Harley Quinn when she was insane and fun was part of what made the first part of the movie so entertaining, but then they got the Joker storyline involved, and had her fighting monsters, which is not somewhere that she belongs, but I understand why they chose to do that, I don’t agree with it however.

Jai Courtney was cast as George Harkness / Captain Boomerang, and it turns out that not putting him in a starring role was genius, as he was likeable and fun in small doses. being able to throw boomerangs around and hitting people with them as if they were clubs was fun, but once again, that character didn’t belong in that type of situation, fighting monsters’.
They cast Jay Hernandez as Diablo in this movie, and he was a pacifist for most of the film, and turned into a cool fire monster, that is most likely not dead at the end of the film, and I have to point out that he’s one of the only villains in this movie that is equipped to fight the endless waves of villains in an end of the world type situation.

Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje played Killer Croc in this movie was mostly a joke and I didn’t find his characteristics interesting other than the self acceptance when he calls himself beautiful.
Joel Kinnaman was Rick Flagg in Suicide Squad and his role was to be the babysitter of the group and to be the one who was Amanda Waller’s puppet. His love interest in Dr. June Moone was something that made him fall under Waller’s spell, and I guess it worked in the movie, but I just didn’t enjoy the character.

Karen Fukuhara played Katana in the movie, and the character is a very fascinating and detailed character with a cursed sword that traps the souls of the people that she kills with it, that was extremely underutilised and no more information given in the movie. I was really upset with how they treated the character, and I don’t even know why they would include her only to barely explain who she is and what she does, and to give her a reason for being in the movie.
The character of Slipknot was played by Adam Beach. The whole point of this character was to die. There’s no other defining trait, other than he being a Native American who could climb anything, and hit a female office because ‘she had a mouth’. Sadly, there is really no other thing to say about how they used the character.

The Enchantress / Dr. June Moone was played by Cara Delevingne and there’s not much to say about the character other than the first half made her interesting, and had a possible great backstory, but they did a horrible job at making her the villain. When Delevingne was playing the Dr., she did a good job, and showed potential to the character, however when she was playing Enchantress past the 45 minute mark, it was just a weird character that could dance and look at things weird. There was no enchanting quality about her, and she decides to enslave the humans and make them an endless stream of minions that didn’t add anything to the story other than fodder for the other villains to destroy.
The Enchantress’ brother Incubus, was played by Alain Chanoine and I felt like it was just another boss before the main boss for the characters to defeat, and even the villain looked more like a villain out of an anime rather than a blockbuster movie. I feel like the movie overall was just a mess, and the main antagonists didn’t help in elevating the movie’s quality.

Casting Jared Leto as the Joker was something that a lot of people were skeptical about, especially when the first images were released about the character. They tried to do something new with the Joker, and they succeeded in doing that, but they failed at every single thing in regards to the character. The tattoos and the golden teeth is something that can be overlooked, because the character is not about how he looks but how he acts. The way that this Joker acts is wrong on too many levels in regards to who the character is. I don’t understand what Leto and the other filmmakers were thinking in regards to the character, and I can understand why they cut a lot of his scenes, but then you have to ask, why include him to begin with?
There’s already talks to distance themselves from Jared Leto’s Joker, and there’s also discussion about a Joker standalone movie which would be directed by Martin Scorsese. This version of the Joker is the worst iteration of the character that I’ve ever seen or read.

Viola Davis played Amanda Waller in a very cruel and manipulative role, who probably did the best job at playing the character straight from the comics. She was ruthless, cold and brutal in how she handled the Squad and her employees. I’m still wondering the same thing that Deadshot asked, ‘how the hell is she still alive?’
As you can tell, I really wanted to love these characters, and other than making them look similar to the comic book counterparts, most of the characters didn’t work out in this movie. I feel like the script was a mess, and the characters suffered for it. If the character was not played by an A – List star, or a rising Star, then there was no development whatsoever.

The Batman cameos were interesting and just makes the fans want more Batman in this universe by Ben Affleck. He was the one who captured Harley Quinn after she and the Joker crashed into the river. He was also the one who captured Deadshot, and displaying some level of mercy telling him that he didn’t want to take him down in front of his daughter. I found that Batman has relearned some level of compassion after the death of Superman. I still think to this day that they should have not even bothered with this movie, and rather had done a solo Batman film after the events of Batman v Superman, or one that takes place before, like the story of Robin and the Joker.
There was also a fun little Flash cameo for the second straight DCEU movie, when he’s the one that captures Captain Boomerang at the bank vault. I found that Ezra Miller did a fun little cameo that added a bit of levity to his character after the mysterious appearance of his future self as well as Luthor’s clip of him in the corner store from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
The soundtrack for this movie was done by Steven Price, and was something that I want to say I enjoyed, however it was more of a mess than anything else. The songs that they chose were great songs, and I enjoyed the scenes that they were in, however the songs kept cutting out, and having 2-3 songs for one scene was a little absurd and disjointed, and it disappointed me at the end.

Oscar for costume and makeup was something that absolutely surprised me. Even though the costumes were well done, they were nothing compared to almost every other comic book movie. I honestly still think that it was members of the academy all joking around and voting for it as a pity vote, but somehow managed to win.
The end of the world, with the endless minions and the big blue beam in the sky, was something that has been done way too many times before, and even Marvel is guilty of doing that in the first and second Avengers movies, however with this movie it was poorly executed and really felt like a copy of the other movies.

Overall, I feel like this movie should have been given more time in development to be able to do the characters properly and not come up with a world ending problem that brought the gang together to save the world. This movie was supposed to be an ensemble movie felt more like another Will Smith and Margot Robbie movie, and that is something that while I enjoy their movies, this should have been something more. At the end of the day, the movie was an overall disappointment that had the potential to be something great, because of that, I will end up giving this movie a very generous 6/10.

HARLEEN QUINZEL | 23 | HARLEY QUINN | SUICIDE SQUAD | MARGOT ROBBIE | TAKEN
“You know, Pop, the main reason I became a psychiatrist was so I could understand why you did the things you did to our family. Now that I’ve been a criminal myself, I think I understand some of the choices you felt you had to make.”
DATABASE HISTORY:
Psychosis (n): a severe mental disorder in which thought and emotions are so impaired that contact is lost with external reality. Up until a few months before she began working at Arkham Asylum, it was only ever a word that Dr. Harleen Quinzel used to diagnose her patients with. It never had any personal connection to her own state of mind though, not until she was started working at Arkham Asylum at least.
Even before her days at the Asylum, Harleen was interested in the way that the human brain worked. Her mother was harsh and cruel, and even though she was forgiving she still constantly compared Harleen to others. Harleen’s brother was a deadbeat and lived at home with two children that were from different women. One of the main reasons that Harleen chose to become a psychiatrist however was because of her father, a scumbag criminal con man known for swindling women with his charm. Wanting to know why he had done the things that he had to their family, Harleen decided to leave Brooklyn and go to school for psychology. She would later send her brother a large sum of money to get his life on track, only to find that he wasted it.
Being a gifted gymnast, Harleen was able to get a scholarship and soon attended University. Immediately upon finishing she got a job at Arkham Asylum as a intern because the mind of criminals had always intrigued her. As she worked her way up the ranks, she lobbied intensely to try and become the psychiatrist for Gotham’s very own notorious clown, the Joker. Harleen’s desire to cure the Joker had been long building, beginning in college when she had done a small experiment on her then boyfriend, Guy.
While dating Guy, Harleen had come up a theory that being in love was similar to being a criminal. Using her boyfriend as the test subject, she told Guy that she had committed a number of crimes such as murdering a professor. Guy was, of course, shocked but decided to defend Harleen’s honor by killing an man he believed to be the supposedly murdered professor in order to keep him from going to the police about Harleen’s murder attempt. The man was not the professor, however, because he was innocent and it was all a part of a scheme that she had concocted to see how far someone in love would go. Destroyed by guilt, Guy asked Harleen to kill him as he was unable to commit suicide and she did so in ‘love’.
It was because of this experience that she wanted to work the Joker, because he felt some of the same things as Guy had and left Harleen feeling connected to the criminal. As soon as she was finally awarded the spot of his doctor, Harleen went right to work meeting with him and trying to figure out how his mind work. Her experiment with Guy, which had gone farther than she had originally anticipated, had left her traumatized even though she never spoke about it and it began to build up inside of her.
During her sessions with the Joker, Harleen found a shift in her mentality. He wasn’t a totally bad guy, he was just misunderstood. He had been raised in an abusive home and had always been mistreated. It wasn’t his fault. The more she met with the Joker, the more Harleen began to wonder if everything she knew was wrong. That’s where psychosis comes in. Harleen would never admit that her touch with reality was faltering, but she does find herself more and more inclined to listen to a crazy point of view. It all reached a tipping point where she ended up falling into a vat, and after that she died her hair pink and blue and let her true accent out. Dubbing herself ‘Harley Quinn’, a play on ‘Harlequin’, Harley became known as the Joker’s girlfriend and partner in crime.
Despite the fact that she had a doctorate and was quite smart, Harley was constantly pushed to the side as the Joker’s crazy girlfriend. She was unfaltering in her love though, and gave everything to a man who constantly abused her and put her down. Harley believed without a shadow of a doubt that the Joker loved her as much as she loved him, and when he didn’t stop her from nearly getting killed she was devastated. Though she managed to keep her life Harley was forced to take the fall for the scheme that they had been working on, and she was carted back to Arkham not as a doctor but as a patient.
Stuck behind bars in a special unit, Harley practices acrobatics in the cell and ignored most of her therapy. After all, she wasn’t crazy. She’d been trained to find and cure crazy, and that wasn’t her. She’d just been in love, that was all. Love had blinded her in some aspects and opened her eyes in others and she had a much better time as Harley Quinn then she’d ever had as Harleen. Days turned into weeks, and eventually Harley realized that the Joker wasn’t coming for her. She didn’t want to believe that he had forsaken her, but the only visitor she got to her cell was Amanda Waller, and she wasn’t there just for a visit.
Waller was the director of Task Force X, a special undercover project. They were putting together a new team known as the Suicide Squad. The name didn’t seem promising, but the idea was composed of using criminals for undercover missions as they were considered expendable. Harley qualified for the team, and before she had any real say in the matter she was officially a part of Task Force X. A lot of her teammates felt angry at the Joker for one thing or another and were hesitant to trust Harley, but she didn’t care. She was finally doing something other than sitting in a cell and it felt good.
So far, Harley’s done a few missions with the Squad and managed to stay alive. She knows they’re expendable but they’ve been decent at keeping themselves alive thus far. A part of her misses the Joker, but a part of her also knows that space is good. After all, she’s a catch and deserves to be treated as such. No one is sure of how long her resolve will last, and even Harley knows there’s a chance she may fall right back in with him. At the moment she has no choice but being part of Task Force X though, and if she’s gonna be forced to be a team player she’s at least going to have a little fun in the process.
DATABASE CONNECTIONS:
THE JOKER was Harleen’s most dynamic patient, and she became more and more intrigued by him. He isn’t the big bad that everyone says, in fact, he almost seemed kind of misunderstood to her. People just don’t understand the brilliance of his mind, and Harleen began to realize that. He was a rabbit hole, and she fell right down into him and insanity. They were lovers for a while and Harley helped him out time and time again. He let her down when he let her get arrested, and ever since joining the Suicide Squad Harley’s claimed to be over him. No one knows if she’s telling the truth though.
PAMELA ISLEY started out as one of Harleen’s patients, but once Harleen ditched the goodie two-shoes act for Harley, the two became the best of friends. Harley loves Ivy a lot, and even though they have different views on the Joker Harley has always tried to balance her love for her boyfriend and her love for her friend. Why can’t you have your cake and eat it too?
THE BATMAN was supposed to be a hero, but the more Harley talked to the Joker the more she realized that he isn’t a hero at all. He’s violent and unpredictable, imposing his way on everyone without stopping to think about why they were dong the things that they did. He’s gotten her arrested and beat up a few times, but she still likes to tease and flirt with him. After all, someone’s gotta make him smile.
FLOYD LAWTON is a teammate of Harley’s, and while she didn’t know him before they’ve slept together a few times. Does that mean she’s over her puddin’? No. It just means that she’s trying to be all independent and such now that she’s away from the Joker and Lawton was her best option. She’s sure Joker would be mad if he ever found out that she was shagging Deadshot.
