Listen/purchase: Queendom Vol. 1 by Women On Wax Recordings
Detroit's DJ Minx has relaunched Women On Wax Recordings with Queendom Vol.1. The compilation of dance tracks from LGBTQ+ artists was released in June to recognize Pride month. The six-song track listing has music from Minx, DJ Cent, Shaun J. Wright, Nita Aviance, Sydney Blu and Debbie Graham. House and techno are equally present whether it's DJ Cent's tribute to Detroit's late house king Ken Collier or Minx's racy instrumental "Let It Ride." The music does its job of reintroducing the label's duty to release electronic music rooted in Detroit's rhythms. Minx started Women On Wax as a collective of DJs and artists in 1996 and the label followed in 2001. Last year Seth Troxler's remixes of "A Walk In The Park" were released by Factory 93 Records. In May Minx's The Throne EP came out on Higher Ground. Queendom Vol. 1 is available on all streaming platforms.

The World’s End (2013), Dir. Edgar Wright, Starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost
One night. Six Friends. Twelve Pubs. Total Annihilation.
And with this beautiful entry we end the Cornetto Trilogy Journal Entries (C. T. J. E.’s for short), it’s been a truly beautiful ride! I hope my (frankly deficient and almost awful) little journal entries have provided at least a little bit of enjoyment or inspiration to all of you, my beautiful Peggsters <3
I had a lot of fun making them! And this served almost as an exercise or test in if I had any creativity left, I hadn’t done anything like this before so it was a nice little refreshment from my normal journaling routine.
(Pss, there is one for Spaced on the way, this is not the end!)
The World’s End proved to be the most exotic (for lack of a better word) movie out of its siblings, while I felt like Shaun and Hot Fuzz were grounded in reality enough that their events could realistically happen in our reality (well, perhaps excluding the zombies), I felt like The World’s End went all out with the mysticism, fantasy, extravagance, and exuberance.
Of course, this is to be expected, it IS a Sci-Fi movie after all! And I didn’t realise how much I needed a nice, time-to-fight-a-planetary-menace movie until I saw this beaut.
Which speaking of that, this movie is visually beautiful! All of Edgar’s Cornetto movies have this signature look I can’t quite put my finger on, but World’s End (I’ll call it that from now on for the sake of convenience) exudes a certain look and feel that I can’t quite describe, it’s sophisticated almost?
The editing in this film is the best in the entire trilogy, it’s got that signature snappy and dynamic style Edgar does so well, but this time it’s refined to the maximum level, with every scene change and transition leaving you in awe in a “THAT IS GENIUS!” sorta way.
Actually, I remember absolutely losing my shit at the intro ALONE, it was that much of a treat to the eyes.
The score was just PHENOMENAL as well! Normally I’m not one to pay much attention to a film’s score, they almost blend in and become complementary to the film in some cases, but this score drew me in almost immediately. It just started to become more and more impactful and present with each passing scene, I stopped taking the score for granted, and the whole film became a feast for the senses, the scene where Gary, Andy, Sam and Steven are driving away from Newton Haven was so powerful and imposing, I must get this score on some sort of physical format (don’t trust digital media to last forever! much less streaming!)
The plot was the thing I was most afraid of, I’m not known as a huge Sci-Fi guy, I find it quite boring and even uninteresting most of the time, so I was terrified of feeling disconnected from this film. The contrary ended up happening, I think this film may have put me onto the genre! That strange sort of cosmic horror and the implications of bigger and stronger societies outside of our own planetary grasp is very, very intoxicating.
GARY WAS PHENOMENAL.
The first time I watched the film I was honestly a little afraid that I’d dislike him, every little juvenile and childish joke or one liner he’d pull made me worried, specially since he was surrounded by a bunch of people that clearly knew he was not someone to trust. This all changed relatively quickly though, I learnt that Gary was just someone clinging to the past and the fun times he used to have with his mates, and honestly his struggles with addiction and feeling like you have nothing going for yourself hit particularly close to home for me. I ended up completely adoring Gary and I wish him the best, my sweet 40 year old baby boy.
The dynamic between Gary and Andy was perhaps the most interesting in the entire film, you could even argue it’s the central theme of the whole film, and seeing how it all slowly developed, unraveled, and blossomed, and Andy grew to care for Gary again was very, very sweet. The scene where they’re together at The World’s End was the most cathartic and powerful moment of the film. To err is human, truly.
I struggled to grow particularly attached to the rest of Gary’s and Andy’s friends, besides Steven and Sam, I didn’t care much for Oliver and Peter, admittedly, sorry!
This movie was surprisingly powerful, even now I find myself still thinking about it, specially the message of how making mistakes and being imperfect is part of the core nature of being human, to rob us of imperfection is to rob us of humanity, of warmth, of thought, of intention.
The World’s End. 10/10.
Until I (inevitably) rewatch you again, Cornetto Trilogy, which will probably be sooner than I expect it to be ❤️💙💚

RANDOM NOTES I’ve had consistently disappointing times at Elsewhere, even when seeing some favorite artists (e.g. Jon Hopkins, Helena Hauff or Ross from Friends)
Nowadays is still the best establishment in NYC hands down, despite having to go there after 4AM occassionally to avoid some of the worst crowds.
I’ve learned I significantly prefer the chiller vibes of the High Teas to the ‘classical’ Unters, despite being more into techno than house.
In 2023, I hope to go to Movement and Berlin for the first time!

Smartbar Picks: 6/25-6/26
The Blessed Madonna
BY JORDAN MAINZER
The legendary dance club Smartbar reopened last Friday with no masking or social distancing requirements but proof of completed vaccination! (Go Smartbar!) Here are a couple shows there this weekend I’d recommend; while advance tickets are sold out, there will be tickets available at the door.
6/25: Eris Drew B2B Octo Octa
We’ve included a B2B set with DJs Eris Drew and Octo Octa before, mentioning that Octo Octa’s 2019 record Resonant Body was our #9 album of that year. Over the past year and a half, each has released material both on their own and collaboratively. Octo Octa came out with a dreamy, corporeal EP earlier this year, She’s Calling, which consists of two songs and an evocation. (50% of profits from album purchase go towards the Sylvia Rivera Law Project, which “works to guarantee that all people are free to self-determine their gender identity and expression, regardless of income or race, and without facing harassment, discrimination, or violence.”) Drew’s debut solo release was last February’s Fluids of Emotion, a truly spiritual 3-song collection of House and Breakbeat jams made for legendary Detroit label Interdimensional Transmissions. Lastly, the two released a split single for fabric last November.
Also performing B2B are Smartbar resident DJ Ariel Zetina and Miss Twink USA. The night is hosted by performer and choreographer Darling Shear and Sophie Bee.
6/26: The Blessed Madonna
The Dua Lipa album remixer returns to Smartbar tomorrow night. Since then, she’s released a New Years Eve 2021 mix, remixes for Jungle and The Chemical Brothers (the latter released just today), and a single with Fred Again called “Marea (We’ve Lost Dancing)”, a mournful, yet hopeful treatise on how COVID-19 affected the club world. Her dropping this track in a Smartbar set would be an undeniably cathartic moment.
DJs Shaun J. Wright and Smartbar favorite Harry Cross also perform.

Hot Fuzz (2007), Dir. Edgar Wright, Starring Simon Pegg, and Nick Frost.
Big cops. Small town. Moderate Violence.
And here is the next entry in the Cornetto Trilogy Journal Entries series (C. T. J. E.’s for short), and this time (a little predictably), it’s the phenomenal and timeless Hot Fuzz!
For this entry, you can see I went all in with the b&w with one specific colour highlight visual motif, but for this one, instead of using weird halo-ish shadows like I did for Shaun, here I used a bunch of little lines, not only to imitate cross-stitching (which I think is lovely) but to also, admittedly a bit shittily, imitate the look of action comics, the ones where cops always fight the bad guys. I didn’t quite succeed but it isn’t hideous.
I’m honestly very happy with how this one turned out! Not quite the same charisma as Shaun, but still on theme and it’s cute.
Shaun was the birth of my fascination for everything Cornetto related, and Hot Fuzz was the consolidation.
While I was already excited to watch Shaun and had heard a fair deal about it, before finding out about the Cornetto Trilogy, I had NO idea hot fuzz existed, so when I did watch it, it had no reputation to precede it, I watched it entirely blind.
So, it actually surprised me how immediately I was captivated by it, the opening sequence where the narrator describes the sleuth of qualifications and achievements by Nic’s hand had me glued to the screen! And the scene where Nic is transferred to the countryside, man. I must have rewinded that scene so many times that I lost count!
I loved Hot Fuzz to death and I hadn’t even gotten to half of the halfway point.
Simon as Nic was nothing short of amazing, despite him being incredibly uptight and strictly law-abiding, I never once found him tiresome or arrogant, hell, the scene where Nic age checks all the minor patrons in the bar was one of my favourite in the entire film. And that scene where Nic is riding the train out of London and we constantly cut to “WELCOME” signs for various towns and Nic’s phone signal decreasing with each cut, that IS true filmmaking.
And then of course, Nic’s shenanigans once he arrives in town are incredibly entertaining, there’s a certain charm to him taking everything way too seriously while being offered cake, and being screamed at about how long the precinct will have ice cream for. And there’s even more magic when you realise that amidst all that quirk and tomfoolery, Nic and Danny are already starting to build something together.
I was absolutely enchanted by Danny asking Nic all those funny little questions about what it felt like to be stabbed, or if there really was a spot in the head where if you got shot your head would blow up, like a child would with his parents, and that immediately set me on the Butterangel train ngl.
(and then, oh my god, the quirky little side quests Nic got sent to with Danny, like the old man with the bomb in his shed, that Nic couldn’t understand due to his heavy country accent, or the bit with the goose, which obviously is immortal to this day).
Hot Fuzz obviously has a plot of its own, and that plot is absolutely amazing and the twists keep you on the edge of your seat, but it also is mainly about the relationship between Nic and Danny. And I found every single step of it charming and heartwarming! I remember actually squealing with excitement at every little step forward they each took towards opening up to each other, like Nic staying up all night with Danny to watch his favourite movies, or Nic winning Danny that plushie at the town fair, or the fucking FLOWER SHOP SCENEEEEE, I have truly never felt so touched by an *action* film before, even just remembering all those little details makes me smile :)
Hot Fuzz may be about a big town cop getting sent and adjusted to live in a small countryside town where nothing *appears* to happen, but it’s also about finding the little silver linings in those moments of life where you feel betrayed or let down, and maybe you’ll find more than a silver lining, you’ll find a little nugget of gold, like Nic found Danny, and like I found this movie.
Hot Fuzz!
10/10. Obviously
