Of the main three, Maximus was taken by a militant cult as a child after his home was destroyed, and Lucy was born into a mad scientist corporation-based pseudo-cult - but Cooper, an original American, is the one who’s the most broken. It’s not only because he’s lived the longest and therefore been through the most shit. He believed the most in the most pervasive and powerful culture, and it was the deepest betrayal.  

Max and other Brotherhood members, even Thaddeus, are entirely aware of how they're abused and trapped. Lucy follows the values she was taught and genuinely believes in kindness, but she quickly accepts the truth about Vault-Tec and her father. In Cooper’s flashbacks, he’s by far the most resistant to challenges to his beliefs and personal security. He scoffs at his best friend’s criticism and walks out of a meeting where he agrees with the sentiment not so deep down. He throws around the word ‘commie’ because his society actually has a label for dissidents. He's hesitant to spy on Barb not just because he respects her but because he's scared of the truth. As the truth gains on him, his reaction is consistently denial - and it's ambiguous to what extent that's his own personality and to what extent it's cultural conditioning. Unlike other parents, he was honest with his daughter about the war, but he still wanted to believe a nuke was ‘just a fire’. 

In FO analyses there’s a common assumption that the Pre-War world was ‘still better’ and the post-apocalypse is regression. Actually, it’s not that simple. The current cultures are a continuation, not a reset. The wasteland’s brutality makes it possible for people like Max and Lucy to recognize the awful reality behind people claiming to protect them. They don’t cling to lies; at this point, they probably wouldn't choose to give their whole lives for a lie. Pre-War, Cooper fought and worked for outright evil people, but he couldn’t tell at first because his life was pretty good. The depth of indoctrination corresponds to how normal life seems - from the Brotherhood's open contempt for itself to Vault 33's cheery obsession with Reclamation Day to the last days of the upper class in Pre-War America.

And it's so interesting how they relate to each other?? Max tries to do things Lucy’s way, even after it doesn’t work, and he starts agreeing that it’s better to be compassionate than to demand and take. Lucy understands that morality is complex after two weeks in the wasteland, easily forgiving Max for lying, then believing Moldaver's story. Meanwhile the Ghoul tried to show Lucy that the world is terrible and she'll end up like him - not because Cooper was an asshole at heart, but because that complete loss of idealism happened to him, and even though he was once nice and honorable, his original worldview already emphasized Being Right or Proving a Point.

The first one I ever saw was Malice . It was back when I first got into BATIM, and at first it was just “woagh that’s a spooky lady……..” and then it just!! Developed into continually playing chapter 3 of BATIM so I could hear her voice lines like she was talking to me :3

then it was Meta Knight , I first saw him when I was DEEP into a Kirby fixation with @mikoshubofchaos , and I don’t quite remember what happened, either us doing a rp or me snooping around to find Kirby images to send her, then I was like “holy fucking shit a borb”

Team Paradisia slayed though

Awww poor Nina-8 :( Hmm what plan is Nikki-4 talking about, I don't remember much after the Paradisia tournament. I do like the conflict between the two, they may be twins but Nina-8 has a much softer personality than Nikki-4. And with her not being on the team until D'jok left, I wonder if she was already trying to distance herself from them a bit and try to live her own life. Which is pretty symbolic for an identical twin.

Well Mark's love drama has more potential than the love triangles they were doing until now, if only they'd given it more screentime and development

Hush Sharky is kind of underreacting for a journalist who just found out a galaxy-class footballer and his coach are in cahoots with the leader of the pirates

Again, the budget of this show might be low, but they actually have quite a lot of locations and the background art is always really good.

Stevens top scorer in the cup!! It might seem strange with him not having a flux, but it seems reasonable to me considering the Pirate's style of play. They always score at least one goal in their games, and he's pretty much always the one who does it. For other teams, the goal scoring is a bit more shared between different players. Plus it's still early in the cup.

KING. I LOVE THIS INTERACTION. Stevens keeping it real even before the Technoids showed up, I'll say we've had some good Pirates moments this season

D'jok seems to be perfectly back to normal and on friendly terms with the others as if nothing happened. Compare to season 2 where Rocket's Netherball stint had consequences and his return was not so smooth!

Ahito you couldn't think of a better excuse for Thran leaving? 😂 I do feel like we could have had a better reason in the story for Thran ending up with the Pirates, it IS a bit weird that he says he has to go on a mission with them but he doesn't actually have a reason to, and this is before the SEMI-FINAL. That's a bit too important to be sneaking off because... you just want to?

Oh I really love this interaction between D'jok and Luur before kickoff – no intimidation dance from the Xenons, just a meaningful handshake between a guy who almost plummeted to his death last season, and the player that saved him. Idk if the writers were intentional with this but if so, it's a really nice example of subtle writing and events of the previous season carrying over.

Wait yeah the Pirates aren't back yet! In which case, Aarch is pretty chill for a coach who is missing a player for A SEMI-FINAL MATCH. Eh I guess at this point he's just given up with these kids

Oh damn Brim Simbra actually died, I like that they went through with that so the explosion on Paradisia had consequences. Could have also opened up some interesting avenues with the new flux society leader in season 4 – maybe he'd want to do things differently?

But it's also kind of hilarious that Brim Simbra's very last action as flux society leader... was to delegate the galaxy saving to Sonny Blackbones yet again LOL

I think the biggest change would be that her gender identity and sexuality would probably be hidden info if not completely erased. This is considering almost every other character is portrayed as straight (debatably) and cis. Her identity has an impact on her character and how she carries herself and interacts with the world so it would definitely flatten her character as a whole and probably make her more of a side character than one with her own story arc.

I also think canon would make her too much of a comedic character like Sharky, seeing as they seem to only write those types of characters one way when Lola's type of humour is not hick-stupid but more so deflective and meant-to-confuse. They also wouldn't give her enough screen time to actually show the depths of her character so she'd absolutely just come off as an unhinged manic-pixie-dream-girl who likes breaking things.

44. Rant about something writing related.

Sorry, Sharky, it's taken me so long to actually respond to this - real life being annoyingly demanding and all that. Also you know me - I'm always ranting, but what to rant about this time?

So many things I could rant about, but I'm trying not to be too contentious at present and also recognise I likely do versions of the things that annoy me.

That being said one thing that comes to mind is the fact that I am yet again on a Wheel of Time hyperfixation and it's yet again another series where I prefer the prequel characters and there's little to no fandom activity about them. Also (and this is no disrespect to the few fans that are posting/have posted about them), but I always find my shipping and interpretations are very different from the Tumblr niche in whatever media I'm obsessed with, so I tend not to interact much with the majority of fandoms on here. That goes double if there is a new adaptation that I personally dislike which will of course bring new fans in with more differing views and fanworks.

Still, it's sad to rant into the void, or practice post necromancy and see little to no response. I think the joy of fan spaces is to find those people you resonate with and can share views and inspiration on things you can't talk about with people in RL. Even sometimes, it's nice to have a civil discussion with people who do share differing views and headcanons to you. I've just decided I'm going to try and do what I can - whether it's meta or fanfic - and not expect a response. Despite loving this story and these characters for literally decades (even with all its flaws), there's obviously something deeper that keeps drawing me back and I think exploring that alone could be beneficial. I've never been in a popular fandom or if so, a popular fandom focusing on a popular pairing/character, so I tend to be a bit below the radar. In some ways that's probably for the best!

Another mini rant though - it's taken me ages to get into writing these WOT characters and their world (which is not detailed well, yet is very specific in certain ways) and yet I've just realised the one-shot/chapter I've written is one long series of infodumps. Even for an series known for its purple prose infodumps, I think it's too much. Perfectionist that I am, I'm not sure I can post it and it's thousands of words long and I'll have to leave writing soon as I'm about to start an intensive short course, so I'm feeling really grumpy! Likely it will be another year or two before I get back into WOT if I leave the zone now. Always happens and I just want to get to this one scene I've wanted to write for years! Wish my writing process didn't involve a lot of re-reading/imagining/pot boiling before I can actually write!

Robo Boyfriends and Girlfriends

So I’ve had a bit of time to think about what Noe/lle said about Entrapta “getting many robo boyfriends and girlfriends“, and on one hand I don’t have a problem with anyone hc-ing Entrapta as poly, but on the other there’s something about that statement that’s a bit “off“. And I think fandom discussion might be getting too heated on this so I’m gonna try to dissect why Noe/lle’s hc rubbed so many people the wrong way, despite OT3s being a pretty normal thing in this fandom.

Disclaimer: This is in no way an endorsement to bully anybody for their hc’s, especially show runners! I don’t even think Noe/lle put much thought into her statement, so acting like it’s a premeditated attack on you personally is really a bit much.

With the out of the way, let’s take a look what’s going on here.

Are robots sentient in the She-Ra universe?

So when I first heard about the “robo GFs and BFs” I didn’t even register it Entrapta being poly - my first thought was “what, like a sex toy harem??“ And that’s because I never viewed robots as fully sentient in the She-Ra universe. Droves of them are destroyed in battle and nobody even bats an eyelash. Mara’s ship still has the primary function of serving and aiding the person piloting it. Light Hope was definitely an advanced AI, but she was still required to follow her programming. Emily may have a mind of her own, but her behaviour is closer to that of a pet than adult human. Maybe there is some example that I forgot about, but overall I don’t see machines as equal to humans in the She-Ra universe.

Which also brings me to Entrapta and her relationship to robots.

One of the reasons I feel for Entrapdak is that despite all the robots she surrounds herself with, Entrapta still seems to be lonely and in search of a “human“ connection. This doesn’t mean that her relationship to her robots is lesser than the one she seeks with other humans/aliens, but it is different. One cannot completely replace the other. (Also worth mentioning that we never see her interact with a robot as a fully fledged romantic partner, we only get humorous moments where she’s “horny” for their tech).

So with all this in mind, her having “robo-partners” doesn’t come off as a real romantic relationship, but more as some kind of “pygmalion“ role play.

The Curtis Catastrophe

For all of you blissfully unaware of the dumpster fire Voltron: Legendary Defender turned into, let me introduce you to what I have since called the “Curtis Catastrophe“.

The Catastrophe is on the right.

After several seasons of making googly eyes at one of the other male characters without it going anywhere, the character of Shiro is suddenly revealed to be gay, finds out that his ex-boyfriend died in combat, and ends the last season marrying Male_Stock_Character_23b.jpg aka “Curtis”. We are not familiar with the character of Curtis, he has exceptionally limited screen time during the season, but then all of a sudden we’re supposed to be happy to see a character we have watched through the whole run of the show marry this nobody out of nowhere. Needless to say, fans weren’t happy with “representation“ that had no build up or development - and it left an impression that gay romances don’t deserve the same care as their straight counterparts.

Which brings me to poly Entrapta. Now, had Noe/lle said Entrapdak becomes a poly relationship with somebody like Scorpia or Wrongdak, obviously not everybody would ship it but it would feel like something that has a background to it. Scorpia and Entrapta have a good relationship and care about each other, and Wrongdak is a pretty new character but he’s easy to warm up to. But faceless “robo GFs and BFs“ is kind of like getting to marry Curtis - a character we’re familiar with starting a romantic relationship with somebody we don’t know or care about (and in this case haven’t even seen). After the slow burn that ended in Entrapdak - a relationship between two introverted, guarded, and socially awkward characters - all of a sudden we’re told Entrapta gets to date Robo-Curtis and it just doesn’t fit with anything we’ve been told about the character so far. Why didn’t she date one of her robots before that? Why is she so desperate to connect to other living creatures when she can just go be with machines?

Again, it’s important to understand there’s no reason Entrapta can’t be poly or that being poly means she loves Hordak any less or that she is not capable of being in a monogamous relationship. But making her poly by dating robot characters we’ve never seen doesn’t make it feel like a meaningful development to the character, but rather as a throw away idea. And I get why it rubs people the wrong way.

Anyway, I hope this breakdown helped you understand why some fans don’t like this idea, and that poly-Entrapta is not so much the problem as how it’s being presented (though some of y’all need to read up on what it really means to be poly, jeez!). Are the fans reading too much into it? Of course, that’s what fandoms have always been like 😅 But I think it’s useful to break down why we like or don’t like something so we can drill down to a logical explanation rather than just venting our emotions without understanding how they came to be. 👍

sharky is a lot lonelier than he lets people in on - and that means something , considering he is someone that is usually brutally honest about pretty much every thing that is going on in his head , and whose second favourite thing in the world - right after FIRE , mind - is over sharing . one of the things he does overshare , while at the grandview hotel , is how he wasn’t wanted ; he mentions how he was conceived at a hotel , and that his dad was wearing a condom and his mum was on the pill , so he’s kind of a miracle ; except they didn’t call him that, but he thinks it sounds nicer than ‘unwanted’ . on another ocassion , he tells rook that he is pretty lonely , and asks them if they can still be friends after all this . heck , in the introduction video for the specialists that ubisoft released , he even gets advertised as ‘ fights because he has no friends ‘ . the whole thing pretty much lines up with the general idea of him being ostracised - and his parents simply not giving a shit . here’s the deal ; many clinical studies have found that fire setting rarely occurs by itself but usually occurs with other socially unacceptable behavior. the motives that have recently earned the most attention are pleasure , a cry for help , retaliation against adults , and desire to reunite the family . it seems like it is a combination of pyromania and bad behavior that initiates fire setting . some children and teens may set fires often to release tension , but then there are others that may only seek to set fires during times of great stress . some of the symptoms of pyromania are depression , conflicts in relationships , and poor ability to cope with stress and anxiety . his fascination with fire as well as his obvious role as the unwanted child [ which also explains his father’s willingness to simply gamble away the right to name him ] seems to have been the flamable cocktail that lead to his full blown pyromania ; and fire became a solution to every one of his problems ; it got him the attention he longed for , it worked as a vent for all the stress he was under , and eventually seemed to even act as a form of comfort .
