Motorhomes, on the other hand, are usually taken on board the ship. After booking a rental car, one should not forget to arrange the car exchange in advance with the rental car company or in our case DerTour (inform the day of the crossing and times), so that a car is really available. The New Zealanders owe this spectacle to the adventurer Lawson Burrows. In the cave itself, photography is prohibited. Since the corridors in many parts of Aranui Cave are quite narrow, you can expect smaller groups and much less hectic here than in the other two caves. So you can listen to your guide in peace and quiet and get interesting information about the history of the cave. Most of the tours in the cave are barrier-free and also possible with a wheelchair. The larvae glow to lure prey into their traps. Possibly the cave ceiling covered with larvae feigns a free starry sky at night to the prey.

After a good half hour we went outside again completely enthusiastic. Even if the McLaren Falls Park is not a cave, you can see fireflies in a dreamlike ambience. The park is at the same time also a cheap camping site. You can stay here for 10 NZD per person in your own car or tent. If you take part in one of the first guided tours of the day, you also have a better chance of a smaller group. The Waitomo Caves consist of three main caves, the eponymous Waitomo Cave, Ruakuri Cave and Aranui Cave. The caves can be visited as part of guided tours, and there are many different possibilities. The larvae are sensitive to light and disturbances.
