i feel like i'm sticking my arm into a bear trap up to my shoulder with this post but.

you're never going to be satisfied with the number of kudos or reblogs or comments or bookmarks you get if you share your work with the mindset that interaction is due to you from readers. that comments are payment for the writing you've shared for free. that it's those ungrateful fans' fault when writers stop posting.

and i say this because at least once a week i see a post telling people in no uncertain terms exactly that. they have to reblog or fandom will die. they have to comment or the author will give up. they, personally, are responsible. giving instructions on how to comment. showing screenshots of like-reblog ratios on gifsets and how people are literally killing fandom. and i think i've only seen one post cross my dash--the same one, a few times--appreciating and thanking people who take the time to comment at all.

wanting interaction and validation is completely human! i get periodic bouts of insecurity, too--i totally get it. but if your main focus in posting your work in fandom is Number Go Up and the crushing disappointment when it doesn't, and not the joy of creation for its own sake and the appreciation that behind every number is a fully realized human being who took the time and energy out of their day to read your work and maybe even leave some nice tags in a reblog or comment on the chapter...you're never going to be satisfied.

i do my best to reblog and comment and interact with other creators in my fandoms, and i deeply appreciate every friend reading and commenting on the work i'm currently posting--most of them are reading it fandom blind, which is insanely touching. I am doing what all of those guilt trip posts insist you do to keep fandom alive. and if i never see another one on my dash it'll be too soon.

so. um. as some of you may know i landed in the er with covid last weekend. the first of the bills have started to hit, and since i lost my insurance they are… staggering already. i am already disabled and unable to work full time, so money is tight to begin with. i know everyone is struggling right now, but if you’re at all able to help out and are so inclined, i’ll leave my kofi here.
