*pops out of the floor boards* I heard someone calling for me - here I am. And I do have some thoughts about Arion, actually, though I would say that I would have to agree with you in saying that Arion doesn’t really get a whole lot of significant “screen time” in the book to get a really great picture of him, but - 

Arion is what I would call your “standard high fantasy elf”. He’s snobby and proud and headstrong. He insists on formalities as a crown prince and on elevated respect from non-elves. He very much is the “elfs are better than people” type (this is pushed even farther in the computer game. He is distainful of “half-breeds” and insistant on the power of the elven armies, but how canon you consider that is up in the air). He’s even described as your traditional “tall and fair”, as opposed to Ander’s “short and dark”. Arion in book, I would argue, is the kind of elf that explains where elf stereotypes come from. 

He’s also the classic older sibling: dad’s favourite (according to Ander), athletic, handsome and “charismatic” (though I do wonder what Ander’s threshhold for charismatic is, since most of the time Arion speaks he’s kinda being a dick). He’s stubborn and set in stone and impatient and reckless. If he believes something to be true he cannot be moved, and this clouds any good sense he has.

I would say, though, that while Arion is more so on the haughty and generally mean spirited elf side, I think part of that has to do with his personality being generally proud, and the other part is that he’s even MORE like that now becausef of the death of Aine. Aine’s death scrambled a lot of things for the Elessedils and hurt a lot of feelings in different ways, but I feel like it may have hurt Arion the most because he - at the end - perhaps feels as though he lost the most (Because it cost him Amberle - she didn’t turn to him for comfort she turned to Ander, which then cost him Ander because he was jealous, etc.)

We get glimpses a softer Arion from time to time, but not in great detail. He checks in with his father and seems genuinely concerned after him. Aine was described as his “beloved brother” (extremely so - it seemed like Aine was most likely Arion’s favourite). He and Ander were apparently close before Aine had died, and he was fond of Amberle before she chose Ander over him. He also seems gentle towards Lessa - a guard who attempts to court him in the computer game - which kinda skews his looking down his nose at non-royalty thing. 

I think at the end of the day, Arion is a bitter person. Brooks says as much several times: 

“There was great bitterness within the Crown Prince, much of it caused by the obvious hurt that this girl had brought to the King”

Ander genuinely seems to want to make up with Arion and make him see reason, which to me suggests that he’s not completely irredeemable as a person and I feel like there’s more to explore about Arion pre-Aine death. 

I think really at the core of it all, Arion is a deeply hurt individual who - like his father and brother  - does not deal with his emotions in a healthy way. Unlike Ander and Eventine, though, he is incapable of letting his bitterness and hurt go. He keeps it festering inside of him and lashes out, driving the rest of his family away from him. I think, if nothing else, that makes for an interesting character that could be further explored. 

I feel like the show took these characteristics and amped them up to eleven, so much so that Arion came across as almost completely unlikable imo. ��

That said, I actually don’t have that many thoughts - it’s been a while since I reread teos and honestly I remember by biggest impression of Arion was that I just kinda...wanted to know more about him? When I get to teos on my reread I’ll  revisit this ask and pay closer attention to him (and if I don’t remember, feel free to remind me!)

you know what? eretria and lyria are ICONS and ill tell you why

i was sorta :/ @ the shannara writers at the start bc lyria seemed to personify the Promiscuous Unfaithful Bi Woman trope. like tamlin told eretria that her daughter had had several previous love interests whom she treated the exact same way, even going so far as to quote lyria word for word and tell eretria that she was nothing more than a phase. it was suggested that lyria could never truly be faithful to eretria, at least not until someone else came into the picture

but then the writers COMPLETELY turned that on its head. lyria was faithful only to eretria throughout, prioritised her safety and comfort, respected her boundaries, constantly spoke about her with utmost admiration when she wasnt around, loved her wholly and unconditionally, and ultimately promised to wait for her until she returned to leah. lyria’s relationshup with eretria was not borne out of deceit, escapism, or boredom, rather of commitment, respect, trust, and pure love which is. beyond amazing to see represented in an f/f interracial relationship

also? f/f interracial relationships in media tend to feature the Princess/Knight dichotomy in which the white woman is portrayed as pure, helpless, and beautiful, needing to be saved by the brutish, violent, lionhearted woman of colour. the woc will undertake physical and emotional labour for the sake of the white woman, who rarely if ever reciprocates to the same extent. again this trope was completely subverted. lyria is softhearted but undeniably strong, the princess to eretria’s fierce, lionhearted fighter. they stand on equal footing at all times, however, and neither position is elevated above the other

honestly? they are the bi rep we deserve. lyretria is endgame and i love them with all my heart

mostly quick break down of a few muses i’m really excited to add in the future:

shana ( fc: auli'i cravalho, aka a real life didney princess )

eighteen. petite. a sweet and down to earth girl on the surface, but more badass than meets the eye, with a will to protect others. dislikes being underestimated, can be reckless and wants to prove herself. turns out to be an excellent healer and magic user, to the point she’s considered freakishly op by fandom. not the strongest in hand to hand but carries a knife and is a skilled archer girl. hates the thought of being left behind or seen as useless, especially when she wants to do nothing but help. great love for nature, especially birds. grew up in the small village of seles as the mayor’s adopted daughter.

since i love the thought of tweaking seles with ancient hawaiian influences minus the icky colonization in a fantasy world due to my faceclaim...default to seles being a peaceful seaside village that indulges in trade. shana thus learns how to fish, hunt, surf, sail, and only becomes more physically capable during the years her childhood friend spends away from their home. frail looking...if compared to others in her village ( ancient hawaiians were tol, so everyone in the village is taller than shana aka she looks like a ‘runt’ ). while dainty in comparison, still toned and fit, able to clean fish and hunt. also great at cooking and weaving. after dart comes back, shana is stubborn, trying to convince him she’s grown and become stronger, even if she’s not as strong as others.

doesn't know she's a princess who was separated from her identical twin ( and who ended up murdered instead of her ) due to being the moon child. the moon child is believed to be a force of holy bliss and goodness. others naturally gravitate towards shana with a desire to befriend and protect her.

can’t always control her powers, which glow and flare up and save her and the group at various times during their journey; she’s reassured about them, but deep down they scare her, and so she carries a sense of looming dread, not understanding where they come from.

the truth comes out that she is the moon child, and not only that but the moon child is destined to become a vessel of destruction. this is thwarted, but she has her struggles with self doubt and finding out the multi-layered truth of her identity.

think of her as a didney princess with some of the most typical trappings. a magical girl that grows into an action one but to a realistic degree due to her lifestyle and the demands of her journey. still feels she comes up short against others in her party who have extensive backgrounds in warfare. again, didney princess but with a twist. she doesn’t end up living a lavish lifestyle in a castle somewhere or go back to being a princess ( something i plan to dive into more efghwyfe ), though she does get dressed up and attend a fancy ball. travels on the road for a bit once the world is saved, but returns to the small village she called home, and focuses on restoring it with her childhood sweetheart, dart, to live out the rest of her life in peace.

meru ( fc: malese jow, specifically as she appears in the shannara chronicles )

wingly, which is basically a type of faerie...but with a warmongering history. even shorter than shana. being a wingly and having dancer skills makes her inhumanely fast and strong. magically inclined but also fights with a giant hammer just because she can. loves to put on a show as she kicks other people’s asses. could be mistaken for late teens, but with her elongated lifespan she’s actually in her fifties. cheerful, playful, blunt, can be a bit childish, but knows when to get serious and genuinely cares about others when it counts. while traveling with the group she’s in, she hides her identity for as long as she can due to the history of the winglies.

her kind tried to oppress and enslave humans ( and countless other races ) thousands of years ago. they lost the war, but are believed to be extinct or “faded into legend”. in reality they live in secret in a forest, secluded and isolated after being overpowered by the dragoons --- in simplistic terms, powerful humans who were able to rely on the magic and power of dragons. meru grew curious about the world outside and decided to sneak out, venturing well beyond her forest, knowing it meant her banishment. fell in love with much of what she saw, and wanted to inspire the winglies to come out of isolation and exist in peace with everyone else. even when she faces a harsh reception upon her initial return to the forest, she still chooses to travel on her quest to save the planet.

has a hot fiance in the wingly guard with a silly name who would be more uptight if it wasn’t for her. after everything is said and done, they get married and meru leads him by the hand out into the world to embark on their own adventures.

kongol ( fc: dwayne johnson, specifically as he appears in the scorpion king )

giganto, surprisingly meaning he’s a giant. stands at over eight feet tall. the last of his kind, a physically powerful and looming race...with a weakness to magic. his people were kidnapped and enslaved by the winglies and forced to serve them in battle, that or entertain the masses in coliseums; then the dwindling and surviving population after that were wiped out by human bandits. as a child, he was taken in by emperor doel, a human noble who promised that the injustice brought against the gigantos would never happen again; he would dispose of anyone who stood in his way to establish equality. easily wins kongol’s loyalty and remains steadfastly at his side and in his service as his muscle for many years to come.

gets defeated in battle by the main party, but since dart shows mercy by sparing his life, he becomes loyal to him and joins their cause. learns about wholesome things like friendship. after the world is saved, ends up training at a dojo with a master to become stronger. around when he’s thinking it’s time to move on, meru and guarha show up as if by fate. they all end up traveling to seles together to reunite with dart and shana. meru and her husband leave after their visit, but kongol chooses to stay and live there with dart and shana. adjusts to the rhythms of village life easily, using his strength as a guardian and protector.

fun fact, the people kongol considers himself closest to are dart, shana, and meru.
