Review - Public Goods
While visiting my family for the holidays, my dad told me that he had gotten me an Airbnb nearby his apartment. That way, my girlfriend and I wouldn't be sharing the couch with two rambunctious dogs. My girlfriend and I are very grateful for this, as we appreciate having our own space like this.
When we arrived yesterday, I took a look in the bathroom and noticed that the hand soap, the shampoo, the conditioner, and the body wash are all the same brand: Public Goods.
Tumblr media
(I'm only including the one picture, because it's all you really need. All the other bottles are basically the same, but instead of saying Hand Soap, they say Shampoo, Conditioner, or Body Wash.)
First things first, I have to admit that the graphic design of the bottle does nothing to endear me to the soap. I'm not a huge fan of minimalist design. I think it's boring. I like clutter. I like when there's a bunch of little stuff on bottles. I think bottle's should have word searches and crosswords goddammit. This bottle has the brand, the type of soap, the volume, the slogan "It's all good", and nothing else. Where's the pizazz? Where's the fun? It's gone.
Hand Soap
Anyway, onto the soap itself. Despite the first impression, the hand soap is actually pretty solid. I don't mean in terms of matter. It is a liquid, don't worry. I mean that it does the job well. It doesn't really lather well, which is disappointing, but it doesn't clump up at all, it spreads easily, and it wipes away grime. It works! A good sign for soap. Not much to say for the smell though. It's pretty inoffensive, subtle, standard soap stuff.
7/10
Shampoo
Not gonna lie. It was pretty disappointing. Felt like I was just using the hand soap on my hair. It didn't lather, which is like the one thing I expect shampoo to do? There's gotta be suds in there, otherwise it's no fun. I even went and grabbed an extra squirt to see if maybe I could rub more in, and all I got was disappointment. Anyway, it's fine otherwise. Smells pretty nice, but again not like anything in particular. That's it. Also it pretty effectively killed my curls, but that's normal for shampoo. It's why I only really shampoo once or twice a week.
5/10
Conditioner
I didn't use the conditioner. I have curly hair and use a specific conditioner for it, recommended to me by my sister who went to beauty school and knows these things. I didn't want to completely kill my curls, so I just used that.
?/10
Body Wash
At first, I was optimistic. It came out of the bottle thick, which is great for a body wash. Smelled nice. Was a different texture than the shampoo and hand soap. Fantastic. Pretty quickly though, I became disappointed. I don't know if it's the brand or if whoever owns the Airbnb did this, but it honest to god seemed whatever down. Just fell right off like sauce off of penne lisce, the worst pasta noodle. I guess I'm clean, so that worked, but it was genuinely disappointing.
4/10 (Again, it might've been the owners who watered down the soap though, so if Public Goods wants to send me fresh bottle, they can DM me and I'll update the review.)
Summary
Public Goods seems to me to be a decent company. They talk a lot about environmentalism and sustainable practices, which I hold to be a very important topic. I hope what they say is true. But what it says on the soap bottles does not seem to be.
"It's all good" the soap bottles say, right near the bottom, in tiny print. I would say it's more like "it's fine" or "it works" because those are technically true.
But the hand soap was pretty good.

FAVOURITE MUSIC OF 2024
I'm late doing these but I still wanted to post them.
I thought 2024 was quite a strong year for music. I was glad to see Chappell Roan go from strength to strength. There was also new albums from a few of my favourites - Taylor Swift, Nick Cave, Wendy James, Daphne Guinness and Delilah Bon. Plus I discovered new artists like Ethel Cain and Scene Queen and Sam Morton (the name for Samantha Morton's musical project).
The best compilation was undoubtedly Jon Savage's The Secret Public to tie with his book of the same name (subtitled How the LGBTQ+ Aesthetic Shaped Pop Culture 1955 - 1979).
And the best reissue was of course the Shampoo boxset and I am very disappointed not to see it make any of the end of year lists. You haven't just let me down, you've let yourselves down :)
But by far my favourite album of 2024 was Traumatic Liveliehood by Jazmin Bean and I'm really excited to see what they do next in their career.

80. Shampoo (Hal Ashby, 1975)
Another Hal Ashby “satire” that looks like a million bucks but has nothing to say. Like...I get it, these vapid LA elites only care about beauty and fucking, and election day is about cocktail parties and not voting, and none of them know a damn thing about what's going on in the world, but there's nothing here to suggest that the film knows what's going on in the world either. There's the specter of Nixon, but no indication as to what Nixon is supposed to represent. What should these people care about? What are they ignorant of? Rating: 6.8/10

Favorite Haircare Products 2024
Hello, 2024! I was supposed to post this in December last year because I often get told that my hair looked really nice so only then that I realized that the hair products I've been using, plus new ways of taking care of my hair are really effective.
But as usual, life got so busy so I had to postpone publishing!
Anyhooo, these products have been a constant part of my haircare routine since July 2023 and I still use them til now. This is how my hair looks like as of January 2024.
Tumblr media
Of course, I still have bad hair days, especially on days I forgot to apply Argan oil! But on lazy days where I don't feel like styling my hair, I make sure to apply a hair mist.
Lifestrong Hairfix Advanced Hair Mist
This one is a total favorite! I saw this on Nikki's IG stories (AskMeWhats) mentioning how it was on sale at Watsons that time. I got it for just 160-ish pesos at that time so I decided to get both variants and that's one of the best 160 pesos I've ever spent that!
I spray these anytime, anywhere, and apart from they smell so good, they don't leave any sticky feeling. My hair looks so shiny after and did I mention that this has UV protection, too?
Tumblr media
I also find this useful before heat styling because it makes my hair more manageable.
Lucido-L Argan Oil
Okay, this is truly THE BEST hair product I have ever come across. I have been using Argan oil on and off for many years, maybe more than a decade now. But I would usually stop at one point because it makes my hair and scalp so greasy and it smells like wet grass for real. Not that it's a bad scent, but it's not something I'd like other people to smell on me.
This Lucido-L Argan oil was an impulse purchase when I was shopping in Hong Kong. I got it from Mannings for just 70HKD (500pesos). I tested it there and I liked the non-sticky consistency and the "expensive" scent so I bought it without expecting too much. But OMG this helped me so much with my damaged hair. I barely get tangles and washing my hair every other day became bearable because it's not icky at all. (Yes, as a tropical girl I used to wash my hair every single day, even 2x or 3x a day!)
Vitress Cuticle Coat Instant Relax
Vitress is such a classic haircare brand and I've been using products from this brand for a long time. My current favorite is their cuticle coat which I apply only at the ends of my hair after heat styling. It basically just adds shine and it makes my hair straighter. That's what I noticed about this, it's not really the best when I'm curling my hair because it weighs my curls down but when straightening my hair, this works wonders!
Tumblr media
BENCH Fix Professional Dry Shampoo
Like I mentioned earlier, I used to wash my hair everyday, and during the scorching summer, maybe even 2 or 3 times daily. But these days, I try my best to preserve my hair's natural cuticle buy not stripping it off its moisture every wash. To counteract the grease, I just use a dry shampoo. This one from BENCH is super cheap and works well in getting rid of oil. I like how it adds volume, too!
Tumblr media
My hair would look like this without heat styling! I'd just wash, apply hair mist and let it air dry and it'll still look like this. Applying Argan oil the night before helps so much as well :)

Review - Ritual of Sakura duty free kit
Tumblr media
Sakura season may be ephemeral, but I've always wished I could enjoy the scent year-round. And so begins my quest for a line of gentle, authentic, lightly sakura-scented bath and body products that are relatively easy to obtain. Rituals is a line of home and personal-care products inspired by scents and, well, rituals of self-care from around the world. I'd been wanting to try their Ritual of Sakura for a while but never got around to it. Until I passed through the duty-free shop in Denver on the way to California last time, and I knew it was fate. They had this lovely little kit that was a duty-free exclusive and I took it as a sign that I had to snag it. I managed to hold on to it until we got to Las Vegas, where I could take advantage of the huge glass shower and giant two-person bathtub. It made the experience all the more special. The products included in this travel-focused kit are a shampoo, rice scrub, foaming shower gel, and a body cream. They all include rice milk and cherry blossom. The products are all lovely to use - rich and creamy and not drying. The shower gel also makes an incredible shave gel and I'm always a fan of double-duty products, especially for travel. The rice scrub is very gentle, which my sensitive and eczema-prone skin greatly appreciated. The whole kit comes in an elegant little travel bag that's white faux-leather on the outside with a soft pink lining that suits the sakura theme perfectly. There is branding on it, but it's a very discreet embossed logo and I would not feel self-conscious carrying other products at all in this. The whole package and experience felt suitably luxurious for a Vegas getaway with a fancy bathtub. Unfortunately, for me personally, the scent on these missed the mark. It's definitely got notes of sakura but it reminds me more of that iconic "doll" scent from the early 80s (I know, I'm likely dating myself here). It's a combination of bright florals and a powdery, comforting scent, all undertoned with a very faint whiff of plastic. It was definitely less fresh and herbaceous than a true single-note sakura fragrance should be, which is what I am still on the prowl for. However, none of of this is to say that it's an unpleasant scent! Not by any means! It's familiar, but elevated, and unique enough to make it stand out in a line of overly florid and saccharine "cherry blossom" scents on the western market. All it means is that my hunt for a true, easily attainable sakura body care line continues. If you like the idea of a softer cherry blossom scent with a more western scent profile in mind, then I highly suggest checking this line out. But if you're like me and you're on the lookout for a pure sakura experience, maybe give Rituals of Sakura a pass. Read the full article

Shampoo Unicorn - Review
Tumblr media
Title: Shampoo Unicorn
Author: Sawyer Lovett
Genre: Contemporary
Audience: Young Adult
Format: Novel
Representation: Trans girl POV character
Summary: As Greg’s father grew angrier and crueler, Greg retreated farther into the straight, masc, football-star persona that kept his father pacified, hiding away anything his father might read as gay and abandoning his former friend, Brian. But getting caught with another boy in his school’s locker room torpedoes any hope he had of keeping up his protective lie till he could escape to college. Expelled from school, athletic scholarships outreach without his place on the school football team, and stuck at home with his abusive father, one accident sends his life into a spiral. Before he has a chance to find a new way forward a hit-and-run leaves him drifting in a coma.
Life as the only out queer kid in a small West Virginia town left Brian isolated and stifled despite his loving family and close friend. He and his best friend started their podcast Shampoo Unicorn, which explores the rural queer experience, as an outlet for him to express himself in a way he couldn’t in real life. But when a hate crime occurs in his town and the police do little to investigate it the podcast becomes something more. Brian uses his platform to track his and his friends’ amateur investigation and call for any information to be shared. Almost overnight it blows up, reaching more people and building a larger community than he could have imagined.
Leslie hunts for the little things that help her keep going day by day – a stolen tube of lipstick, a bowl of ice cream for breakfast, an episode of her favorite podcast Shampoo Unicorn. As a closet trans girl, she’s stuck thinking of her life as something she’ll get to claim one day. One day she’ll be somewhere she can start experimenting with wearing skirts and make-up openly; one day she’ll be able to introduce herself with her real name; one day she’ll take her first dose of hormones. When the hosts of Shampoo Unicorn reveal their identities and talk about how a kid in their town was attacked for being gay, it drags all Leslie’s feelings up to the surface, and in a moment of vulnerability and courage she breaks down and tells her mom everything she’s been going through.
Reflections: Shampoo Unicorn gives voice to various manifestations of queer isolation and loneliness in places where community is hard to come by. Brian’s out and proud as gay despite the bullying from his peers, but without an irl community it’s in some ways left him more isolated and struggling to express himself openly. Greg hides behind a veneer of machismo to keep himself safe in an abusive household, which not only cuts him off from people who could understand and support him but also leaves him struggling with being complicit in his friends’ and teammates’ homophobia. Leslie comes into her own and finds support online but can’t find the courage to make the changes in her real life that will let her stop struggling day after day and start living as herself.
I related the most to Leslie. Even without the fear of abuse or virulent bigotry from her family or friends, her fear still told her to keep holding off until that perfect time and perfect place to be herself. It was beautiful to see her overcome that and be embraced with love and support immediately even if her parents needed time to learn. All the characters’ stories were written equally well, though, with compassion and nuance.
Warnings: Depictions of deadnaming (name censored), misgendering, dysphoria.
Notes on Rep: Character identifies on-page as a trans girl.
