It was an honest mistake. That was the best thing that could be said about the situation. 

“What’s happening to him?” Warriors demanded, staring at the crystal laying mere inches from Time’s shadow-cloaked body. “What is that thing?”

Twilight snatched the crystal up before anyone else could touch it. The urge to transform pulled at him, dark magic prickling beneath his skin. He was able to resist only due to experience. “It’s a magical item. I didn’t mean for—”

“It’s cursed!” Legend snapped. Several of the rings on his fingers flashed threateningly as he took a step back. 

Suddenly, the shadows around Time condensed and sharpened into little black prisms that dimmed the light around them. When they fell away, they dissipated like spun sugar on the tongue. 

Time’s skin melted much the same way. 

“Sweet Hylia,” Sky breathed. Then the screaming began. 

Time doubled over and howled, the sound too guttural to be Hylian. The flesh of his hands peeled and curled, large splinters of wood sprouting from the joints of his fingers. The vertebrae along his back fractured, each loud pop accompanied by a protrusion of heavily keratinized skin. He clawed at the sides of his face as if reaching for something, the pits of his eyes—first blue, then orange, then a depthless black—leaking jelly and blood. He grew and shrank and grew again, his clothes splitting at the seams. The muscles between his ribs parted as though from a sharp instrument, the overlying skin fluttering with every pained, shrieking exhale. 

“The Master Sword!” Twilight ordered frantically, his pulse racing from fear. “Sky, touch him with the sword! Hurry!”

After that, it was over almost as quickly as it began. Sky pressed the flat of the blade against one of Time’s spasming legs, and they all watched in horror as the transformations ceased; scales fell away like confetti, claws sloughed from weeping nail beds, fibrous roots slithered out of abused veins. Time wailed where he lie. 

Before Twilight could summon his wits enough to move, there was a metal rasp, then a blade was held to his throat. “You better have a good fucking explanation, dark,” Legend hissed, ignoring the startled sounds from the other heroes. “I’m not inclined to give a second chance.”

Do you think TP Link would still be able to transform into a wolf post-game or do you think that power would be gone with Midna?

Well his ability to transform at will came from the shadow crystal that Zant put into his head, so as long as he has the crystal he should be able to go wolf just by touching it. The question is can he change back without Midna, since she seems to be the one manipulating it.

I’d imagine he would try to learn the bit of magic needed to do that. Otherwise if something happened to her while he was a beast he’d be stuck. Which would be a bummer.

The meaning of the Shadow Crystal visions

When Kris uses a Shadow Crystal for the first time in a Dark World they get a vision, which changes depending on the Dark World they're in. In the Card Kingdom they see "toys strewn on the floor". In the Cyber World they see "the computer lab".

If this were all there was to it, then the meaning of the Shadow Crystal would be obvious. They show the Light World version of the Dark World you're in.

This alone could be used to explain the insanity of Jevil and Spamton:

Jevil learned that he was just a playing card, and that all the inhabitants of the Card Kingdom were just toys. So he viewed his life as nothing more than a game.

Spamton became obsessed with the world shown in the Shadow Crystal, but lost access to the crystal when he was kicked out from Queen's Mansion. He thought that possessing the old machine (where he found the Shadow Crystal) would elevate him to the level of a lightner, and when that didn't work he thought that getting the soul of a lightner would do the trick.

But that's not all there is to it!

Like everything else in the Dark World, the Shadow Crystal becomes something else in the Light World. Namely, a shard of glass.

Usually, the things in the Light World are boring and mundane, in contrast to the awesome and fantastical of the Dark Worlds. But the glass appears to be an exception, as it supposedly retains some of the magical properties of the Shadow Crystal. You can use it to see visions like you could use the Shadow Crystal.

The first time Kris uses the glass while alone, they see through their hand. The first time they use the glass while with Susie, they see her glaring coldly at them.

This throws a wrench at the apparent straightforwardness of the Shadow Crystals. The Light World visions don't really fit together with Dark World visions. Unless they're not visions...

Is the glass a magical item?

Personally I find it really weird how everyone is cool with the existence of magical shards of glass, knowing what we know about the relation of the Light and Dark Worlds.

The Light World is boring and mundane. The Dark World is awesome and fantastical. And yet, the properties of the Light World objects still inform the properties of their Dark World counterparts.

I believe that the glass is a non-magical object that just appears to show visions, so when it reacts to a Dark Fountain it becomes a magical item that actually show visions.

Here are all the visions:

You held the crystal up to your eye. For some strange reason, for just a brief moment... You thought you saw toys strewn on the floor. ...but, it must've just been your imagination.

After moving the glass away, Kris sees Susie "smiling and making a rude gesture". Why did she do that? Let's put a pin on this for later.

For now, did you notice something different between the Dark and Light World visions?

The Dark World visions end with "but, it must've just been your imagination", but the Light World visions do not.

When Kris uses the Shadow Crystal, they see the Light World for just a brief moment. It happens so fast that they think it was just their imagination.

When Kris uses the glass, they see something for just a brief moment. It happens so fast, but they don't think it was just their imagination. This is because they know what the glass is and why they're seeing what they're seeing.

What is the meaning of the Light World "visions"?

The glass are no ordinary shards of glass. They are pieces of a broken mirror.

If you hold a tiny mirror in your hand, it may seem, for just a brief moment, that you're looking through your hand. But in reality the mirror is just reflect the scenery behind you, which probably looks a whole lot like the scenery in front of you.

If you can see someone's eyes through a mirror, they can see your eyes as well. When Susie saw Kris inexplicably pull out a tiny mirror and just stare at her through it, she glared black to mess with them. This explains her following behavior (smiling while making a rude gesture). She was just teasing Kris.

In Undertale, mirrors (and reflections in general) held the symbolism of "showing your true self". It makes sense that, in Deltarune, a mirror would become something that would literally show the true version of Dark World.

The Chain as animals via shadow crystal? (I feel like Warriors would be a lion tbh) Would Time still be the golden woof boy?

Oooh this is an interesting one.

Time- either the golden wolf. Or. A goat. I will not elaborate.

Twilight- Wolfie. Simple as.

Wars- absolutely a Lion. Proud of the floof. Tries to make fun of legend, gets a concussion from the kick.

Sky- Shoebill. It literally is the inspiration for the Loftwing.

Wind- Sea Otter. Boy can literally just never set foot on land and be fine.

Legend- Bunny. Runner up is a honey badger. Do I even need to explain either?

Four- Hyena. Because he will escape any trap and laugh at you for it. Just crazy clever, but smol.

Hyrule- Fennec Fox. He’s a little guy that has a head to ear ratio of 0.6, and survives with little to no water, and insects.

Wild- Coyote. Just an excellent survivalist individually, and as a species. Social enough to hang with non family but less social than wolves.

I've been thinking about the Shadow Crystals again.

I do still believe that they are (or at least thematically represent) pieces of gaster shattered across time and space, destined for the secret bosses (those who have come in contact with him as a man) to be taken. But I don't agree with all assumptions I made anymore.

For one, how many Shadow Crystals there are gonna be. At first, I said that it's gonna be 7, one for each chapter. But having thought more about it, the more likely number is actually 6. I don't think it would make much sense having a secret boss happen in the final chapter, I feel like that would kinda distract from the finality of it all, plus there wouldn't be any time left after the chapter to actually give the crystals a purpose. Furthermore, Gaster IS heavily associated with the number six.

Another factor I haven't really considered back then is Seam. They mention that, if we were to bring them more, they would "stitch together something incredible" for us. Initially, I thought this referred to the Shadow Mantle, but that wouldn't make any sense since they WERE about to give it us after handing them for just two (and seemingly without any stitching involved). I could see this going multiple ways now. They could stitch the Shadow Crystals together to form the Pure Crystal, to repair Seam themself, maybe even to directly bring back Gaster in a way. "Stitching" together does lead me to believe the Seam option is more likely, though how is a puzzle to me. Maybe Seam is Gaster after all. Who knows.

Deltarune Analysis Time - Acid Theory vs. Sun Theory

The sun theory makes way more narrative sense than the acid theory, specifically for his “IT BURNS” dialogue. Battery acid can cause permanent eye damage, but so can the sun if stared at too long. My primary problem with the acid theory involves why it would happen. Queen has shown no animosity towards Spamton in-game or in any other sources. Swatch has some disdain for Spamton, but he is so polite and well-mannered that it doesn’t fit his character. The only evidence I can find of Queen possibly disliking Spamton is her posters covering his ads, but this is a huge stretch.  Sadly, the only characters likely enough to want to hurt Spamton with acid are the Addisons based on dialogue evidence pointing towards severe envy and disdain they hold for him. You could argue that at least one of them assaulted him with an acid attack that burned his skin and eyes, but this is also countered by Spamton’s additional dialogue strings that never mention them assaulting him. Furthermore, his Snowgrave/Weird Route boss dialogue implies he called them for help, but none came to his side. Perhaps the most reasonable interpretation of the acid theory is that he lost his footing and fell into the pool, causing his own injuries. If we consider that he dashed out of his apartment/room right before Blue/Cyan Addison checked up on him, he could have slipped and fallen in a hurry. Another interpretation is that he tried to kill himself via acid, but this is a stretch. 

Considering all the possible narrative ideas I laid out, the sun theory is much more straightforward, fits the narrative, and doesn’t require as many fanfiction levels of interpretation. Most notably, his obsession with the sun is made evident by the painted sun in his shop. The Cyber World has no sunlit sky. 

Something important to note is when Queen is talking to the Fun Gang while on a TV screen in front of a blue sky with a green background reminiscent of the default Windows XP wallpaper.

Does this mean she is aware of the Light World’s sun? Possibly, especially if she understands the Light World through internet searches. However, unlike Spamton, she doesn’t possess a Shadow Crystal, so she probably has no idea how much it can burn eyes. Plus, she has weird screen eyes, anyway.

One last issue with the acid theory is how acid is portrayed in-game. Queen drinks it like alcohol, and she gets drunk off it as well. It’s possible that only she can drink it, but if this is the case, then people really ought not to draw Spamton drinking it, too, while also carrying on the acid theory narrative. It makes NO sense for him to burn when dunked in it but to have his lips and internal organs intact while drinking it. If anything, Spamton should be drinking ButlerJuice, an actual alcoholic beverage that Ralsei admitted to mixing up through his flavor text. 

Fans can interpret Toby’s writing however they’d like, and I think Toby encourages this. Still, if we have to narrow down the evidence between the acid and sun theories, the sun theory checks out, while the acid theory takes a lot more convoluted explanation to work.

The Master Sword is what let TP Link return to human form. Presumably as long as he had it he could transform at will, but he returned it to the Sacred Grove after the game.

I discussed this a bit in the previous post comments (and some discord threads that spawned off it lol), but I'll recap here:

The Master Sword is what turns him back initially, but in subsequent uses of the Shadow Crystal, it's Midna who does the altering. She says "I can return you to your normal state whenever you need," and is the in-game mechanism you use to make that transformation. Whether she uses the Master Sword or her own magic and understanding of the Shadow Crystal to do that isn't explicitly stated.

The consensus in other discussions I've had is that the Master Sword's power weakened the Crystal to the point of easy manipulation, and it's Midna's magic doing the removing from then on. But again, it's up to interpretation.
