the door opens to reveal a group of convex members, filing into the room with enough noise to blow out the viewer’s speakers. jinwook grins extra wide at the camera and pretends to be shocked, with a pleased waaaaaah~! getting drowned out among the cheers.

taeyong leads the way, throwing confetti that seems magnetized specifically to jinwook’s hair. well, jinwook imagines it would make a mess to anyone’s hair, but most of the other members are wearing hats to hide their recent salon updates: jaehyun with a cap on, woohyun with his sweatshirt hood pulled up, and sangyeon, seungcheol, and hyun following close behind. it’s a pretty chaotic sight. jinwook can’t wait to check his social media later to find blurry screenshots and theories of each one’s new color.

the last member to enter is sehun, carrying a small rounded cake lit with live candles. it’s quite the entrance. as they all squeeze into the camera shot and sehun sets the cake in front of jinwook’s chair, the cheers settle into something more recognizable: happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you! happy birthday dear jinwook, happy birthday to you!

it’s loud and chaotic and warms jinwook’s heart, smile splitting his face open as he sways along. when the song ends he closes his eyes and blows out the candles, and the room fills with more applause.

“thank you!!” jinwook says, almost at a yell. he tries again when the noise dies down. “thank you all, ahhh~ i’m so touched today~”  he holds a hand over his chest in a move that probably seems cheesy and insincere, but his heart really is racing. “even though it’s near the end, my teammates didn’t forget about me!!”

he slings his arms around the two closest members’ shoulders, having to reach up quite a distance to reach hyun’s. when jinwook looks up to joke about it, he’s reminded of another birthday gift. “oh—”

“how did i forget to mention earlier?!” jinwook reaches for his new songwriting notebook, and pulls a folded sheet of paper from the inside cover. “since hyun is here, i want to show consta another gift i received in the morning.” he laughs as hyun begins to protest — don’t show that, it’s embarrassing — and unfolds the paper. inside is a hand-drawn heart. “hyun gave me his heart~”

the room erupts in laughter and cooing and jinwook is floating on the adrenaline, easily surrendering the paper when hyun reaches for it again. it’s time for cake, anyway, and jinwook regains composure when he’s handed ( trusted with ) a large knife.

“first slice for consta,” he declares, holding a carefully sliced piece up to the camera. “today was really special because of you all~” with that the live begins to wrap up, as jinwook continues cutting slices and distributing them to his members, and the staff, too. “thank you so much for celebrating with me. i hope we can have many more v-lives in the future, and many more birthdays together too!”

keeping the blond makes his part of the trip to the salon easier and he admits that it’s growing on him. part of him is convinced that he wants to stay blonde for a while. who would’ve thought he’d change his mind within months? that black might not be his favorite hair color anymore. the princess would probably lose her mind if she found out and he chuckles to himself as the bleach sits on his roots, a touch up still needed to keep the blond fresh, as he considers calling her up later to tell her of it. 

he can imagine the lecture now of whether he’s treating his hair right, if he’s over-washing it or using the wrong product to wash it. so much to go into hair care and skin care that he questions when idols have the time, especially when he thinks of the pretty nail art some of his friends have. beauty is pain, yes, but you don’t hear enough about how time-consuming it can be too. 

with the trip to the salon not taking long for him, he’s more focused on the part of the day he’s been thinking about since late into the night before, unable to sleep and lounging around on the couch instead as he tries to remember his lines. phone clutched in his hand during the rides back and forth, while he sat in the chair to wait for the bleach to develop, and now as he waits for his turn in the recording booth, he struggles with the idea that he has so many lines in swimming fool. he feels like the fool and though he has done the best he can to improve his singing, it still doesn’t feel like enough. 

what he’d give to be able to hold jinwook or woohyun’s hand through this, or to tease sehun, joke around with taeyong and seungcheol, rely on the members, but the truth is, he is the only one who can get himself through this so he does so the best way he knows how; with all the confidence he can muster, he reminds himself of who he is, of the song he wanted to release for their predebut teasers, and that he has come this far for a reason. 

he can allow himself to be a swimming fool but not a singing one.

                        It’s been forever since Minhee spent time with one of her favorite Convex members, she tries not to have favorites but how she is not be the proudest of Seungcheol!? He’s really came far, seeing him shine up on stage being loved by many fans to remembering meeting him for the first time where he was shy stuttering boy who tend to doubt his our abilities thinking it wouldn’t anyone favorites. The picnic was the perfect time to finally spend some actual quality time with him instead exchanging the odd messages over texts. Minhee making sure the food was arranged nicely on the table simple finger food so it wouldn’t be too much of hassle, she caught Seungcheol arrival in the corner of her eye. The older female happily squeal walking quickly over to the idol capturing him in a big hug without no warning, she probably startled him half to dead since last time she was recall he was little bit of scared cat too but who knows things can change.

                    “Cheolie!! You are here! I’m so happy you could make it!  I feel like it’s been forever since I seen you in a flesh, only like on the tv or the computer screen but not in person. I’m very proud on how you are blooming in Convex! You are really doing great...but on real level...” from excited happy tone she quickly switched to concerning motherly tone towards the end, “Are you doing ok?? There is been a lot going on, you’ve been extremely busy. Have you been taking care of yourself?!!” she really wants to know he’s doing okay in general since she cares about her friends. Seungcheol is like her little brother wanting him to succeed but most importantly be happy as that is most important thing out of everything in this world.

taeyong doesn’t remember what time of the night he ended up falling asleep. he doesn’t usually stay up because of his thoughts, because of nerves, but this time, it had been different. maybe it’s because he’s so excited to show everyone yet another new side of convex — this is something that they haven’t done before, and it’s something that taeyong considers to be their best era of music and stylings yet. this is exactly up his alley, and combined with the fact that this is the first comeback after the additions, taeyong’s felt like this is the most important comeback that they’ll ever have. it’s probably not true, but he’s manifesting his energy into this viewpoint.

so it’s no surprise, to him at least, that he’s falling asleep during breakfast — on the first day of promotions, no less. he thinks to himself, maybe he’s gotten at most three hours of sleep. he doesn’t even count that as sleep, more like a long nap. he’s waiting patiently for an iced americano, any kind of caffeination to get that energy for performing later. taeyong takes a bite out of his food, closes his eyes, and slumps against the nearest member’s shoulder — which just so happens to be seungcheol. he sighs, chewing his mouthful absent-mindedly. he waits for a bit to speak, he can’t be talking with his mouth completely filled to the brim.

“mm ~ i’m so tired...” taeyong muses, “i couldn’t sleep, i was so excited for today!”

they're in the swing of preparations, but woohyun refuses to let himself forget about the birthdays of his fellow members. the second birthday of the month falls on the eighth, with seungcheol as the lucky one. unfortunately, woohyun doesn't have a lot of time to properly gift hunt for the other-- so instead, he takes a quick trip in the later afternoon to a bakery, getting a small, simple little cake. he makes a mental note to make it up for the other and gift him something a bit more special.

with the small cake boxed and bagged, hanging off his arm, he digs out his phone so he can type out a quick message to seungcheol. he knows the other is working on something else along with their comeback preparations, and likely returned back to the company after his fanmeeting. woohyun bites his lip, fingers hesitating over the screen. he hopes seungcheol isn't busy with something. if so, he'll just refrigerate it until seungcheol has a moment.

sehun looks at the table, making sure he's got everything ready before he ventures off to get one of the hyungs to join this little kitchen experiment. not that there's any important ingredient (or harmful equipment needed) they'll need that they don't already have in the dorm's small kitchen - they have enough coffee, milk and sugar for everyone who needs it to function properly. with a final nod, he turns on his heel and goes to look for one of the hyungs.

dalgona. it's formed quite a stir everywhere on the internet and he'd be lying if he said he didn't want to try for himself. it's become so popular that everyone's become curious about it, him included. the videos he's watched tells him it's easy enough for anyone with enough patience, so he's been interested in making one. but he needs someone to taste test it with him. preferably a hyung because although he's positive making dalgona isn't enough for him to burn the kitchen down, he can't be too careful. he'll feel a lot better if one of the hyungs was with him. it'll be more fun, too.

sehun knocks on the door twice before he peeks into the room, grinning when he finds seungcheol there. "hello hyung! are you busy today?" he chirps. he isn't sure if the older male is a big fan of caffeine, but he's seen him drink a few before so he hopes it's okay. besides, it's been a very busy month for them and trying to make dalgona for the first time seems like a good way to relax. "have you heard of dalgona before, hyung?" he asks just as he sits himself beside the older male, a smile on his lips. he uses his puppy eyes for good luck. "i was wondering if ever you're free, would you like to try making one with me? i even have everything ready in the kitchen!"

「 WITH A SPLASH 」

jaehyun had decided to go to the samsung summer party, he didn’t have any solo schedules like the other members and so he wanted to grab the chance. the chance to see people he hadn’t had any time seeing ever since joining convex-- but he also figured most of the trainees there probably were busy or nervous, it was probably this month’s evaluation for them. as he arrived at the hotel he walked towards the section set of for the idols.

an idol, that was who he was right now-- jaehyun glanced around at the trainees wondering if any noticed him at all, he spotted familiar faces but they all looked to focused and he didn’t want to take them out of it. or distract them, so instead he watched from a distance.

not even six months ago had this life been his reality-- he was a trainee six months ago, preparing for a monthly evaluation and with a strike of luck ( he considers it luck ) he had been chosen. it had started to sink in, the reality of it all but now that he was there it felt surreal again.

he had arrived with seungcheol, lifting his brows he wondered what the older was thinking about everything. ‘ he’s probably nervous, ’ jaehyun thought, his eyes shifting from seungcheol to their surroundings and coincidentally, right next to them-- there was what looked like a fountain of sorts... filled with water, the corners of his mouth curved up in a mischievous smile.

“seungcheol hyung,” he says, his tone casual and monotone per usual, putting his hand into the water and when the older turns and looks his direction he quickly makes a flicking motion with his hand and splashes the older male with water, “relax a little, hm?” now his smile has turned into one that resembles childlike glee. this is maybe one of the few moments jaehyun does look like one of the youngest members of convex.

200504 |  like anyone else, jinwook treasures the rest days in the middle of a promotion cycle, but he can’t complain about the extra schedule this time. with only three members present there’s much less idle time, so the day flies by. it’s comfortable, too, no matter how many teasing grins and nudges they’ve given each other during the cheesy scenes with the actress playing their love interest. this whole experience has been comfortable, really, and jinwook can’t stop feeling grateful about the opportunity. a few extra early mornings seems like such a small price to pay.

it’s only once they’re waiting for the crew to set up the exam room that jinwook finally breaks out his whiny voice. “i know it’s a joke, but this setting is giving me flashbacks.” he chuckles, to offset the fact that he’s way too old for the scene to actually be sparking anxiety in his stomach. muscle memory, or something. jinwook wishes his body had this kind of recall for convex’s old choreography. he bumps his shoulder into sehun’s. “what do you think, sehunnie? you took the exams the most recently between us.” jinwook scans the room to see if their co-star is within earshot. once the coast is clear, he acts out a dreamy sigh. “i guess it can’t be so bad, if someone like miss hyuna will be the proctor~”

《 ★ seungcheolrk 》 the wait before the camera starts rolling is what keeps hoseok the most bored if he’s being honest. downtime between takes makes him anxious, restless, as if he’s being unproductive and not helpful. the need to reach out is constant and practically aches in his soul. of course, that’s just him being unnecessarily dramatic and he’s scooting over in his chair, squeaks and dragging sounds unfortunately included, until he bumps right into seungcheol. grinning, he presses his shoulder against the rapper’s, brows lifting ever so slightly as he brings his arms closer, waiting for just the right moment to lift his left arm, salt shaker in hand. “ hey, what’s shakin? ” 

with the proudest grin, teeth bared and mirth dancing in his eyes, he stares at seungcheol expectantly. “ are you ... ” he trails off, eyes widening as he leans closer, salt shaker abruptly set down as he brings his right hand up, pointing down at it, slyly looking around. it’s the biggest secret, he insists, as he cups his hand, his voice barely a whisper as he says, “ you know, looking to spice things up? ”
