he was already dressed, seonghwa knew he wanted to go out while he had the free time. yeah, the company offered help but he wanted to try his hand at it on his own. that didn’t mean he didn’t mind a little bit of the company. the main reason he found himself seeking out woohyun. if there was anyone that would go out with him, it would be woohyun. and it didn’t take to long to the other in the living room. 

“hey~” he sing-songed a bit and came to sit down next to woohyun on the couch. “do you want to go shopping with me? i’m trying to figure out what i want to wear for the party.” he had a few floating around. it wasn’t his style to do something hard or overly complicated. “it shouldn’t take too long but i always enjoy the feel of planning it.” either way, he knew it’d be fun at least.

the door opens to reveal a group of convex members, filing into the room with enough noise to blow out the viewer’s speakers. jinwook grins extra wide at the camera and pretends to be shocked, with a pleased waaaaaah~! getting drowned out among the cheers.

taeyong leads the way, throwing confetti that seems magnetized specifically to jinwook’s hair. well, jinwook imagines it would make a mess to anyone’s hair, but most of the other members are wearing hats to hide their recent salon updates: jaehyun with a cap on, woohyun with his sweatshirt hood pulled up, and sangyeon, seungcheol, and hyun following close behind. it’s a pretty chaotic sight. jinwook can’t wait to check his social media later to find blurry screenshots and theories of each one’s new color.

the last member to enter is sehun, carrying a small rounded cake lit with live candles. it’s quite the entrance. as they all squeeze into the camera shot and sehun sets the cake in front of jinwook’s chair, the cheers settle into something more recognizable: happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you! happy birthday dear jinwook, happy birthday to you!

it’s loud and chaotic and warms jinwook’s heart, smile splitting his face open as he sways along. when the song ends he closes his eyes and blows out the candles, and the room fills with more applause.

“thank you!!” jinwook says, almost at a yell. he tries again when the noise dies down. “thank you all, ahhh~ i’m so touched today~”  he holds a hand over his chest in a move that probably seems cheesy and insincere, but his heart really is racing. “even though it’s near the end, my teammates didn’t forget about me!!”

he slings his arms around the two closest members’ shoulders, having to reach up quite a distance to reach hyun’s. when jinwook looks up to joke about it, he’s reminded of another birthday gift. “oh—”

“how did i forget to mention earlier?!” jinwook reaches for his new songwriting notebook, and pulls a folded sheet of paper from the inside cover. “since hyun is here, i want to show consta another gift i received in the morning.” he laughs as hyun begins to protest — don’t show that, it’s embarrassing — and unfolds the paper. inside is a hand-drawn heart. “hyun gave me his heart~”

the room erupts in laughter and cooing and jinwook is floating on the adrenaline, easily surrendering the paper when hyun reaches for it again. it’s time for cake, anyway, and jinwook regains composure when he’s handed ( trusted with ) a large knife.

“first slice for consta,” he declares, holding a carefully sliced piece up to the camera. “today was really special because of you all~” with that the live begins to wrap up, as jinwook continues cutting slices and distributing them to his members, and the staff, too. “thank you so much for celebrating with me. i hope we can have many more v-lives in the future, and many more birthdays together too!”

keeping the blond makes his part of the trip to the salon easier and he admits that it’s growing on him. part of him is convinced that he wants to stay blonde for a while. who would’ve thought he’d change his mind within months? that black might not be his favorite hair color anymore. the princess would probably lose her mind if she found out and he chuckles to himself as the bleach sits on his roots, a touch up still needed to keep the blond fresh, as he considers calling her up later to tell her of it. 

he can imagine the lecture now of whether he’s treating his hair right, if he’s over-washing it or using the wrong product to wash it. so much to go into hair care and skin care that he questions when idols have the time, especially when he thinks of the pretty nail art some of his friends have. beauty is pain, yes, but you don’t hear enough about how time-consuming it can be too. 

with the trip to the salon not taking long for him, he’s more focused on the part of the day he’s been thinking about since late into the night before, unable to sleep and lounging around on the couch instead as he tries to remember his lines. phone clutched in his hand during the rides back and forth, while he sat in the chair to wait for the bleach to develop, and now as he waits for his turn in the recording booth, he struggles with the idea that he has so many lines in swimming fool. he feels like the fool and though he has done the best he can to improve his singing, it still doesn’t feel like enough. 

what he’d give to be able to hold jinwook or woohyun’s hand through this, or to tease sehun, joke around with taeyong and seungcheol, rely on the members, but the truth is, he is the only one who can get himself through this so he does so the best way he knows how; with all the confidence he can muster, he reminds himself of who he is, of the song he wanted to release for their predebut teasers, and that he has come this far for a reason. 

he can allow himself to be a swimming fool but not a singing one.

another month, another evaluation, and in retrospect, may was relatively uneventful. well, it was uneventful for daniel. the speak up project was exciting, namely getting reamed by sunmi in front of an entire class, but ultimately, it wasn’t much in comparison to the rest of his life, even just this year: best friends quitting being trainees, boyfriend enlisting, failing an evaluation. even for his misery in the first couple weeks of may, it ended on a higher note, and it ushers in a june that’s promising. he hopes to god nothing happens. he just wants to focus on training in peace-- on june’s evaluation and writing his music. 

hopefully, the most dramatic thing that happens to him this month is running into convex’s royal in the hallway.

it’s during the latter part of independent study, on his way back from the bathroom to the studio he most commonly uses (the one he met jinwook in on his first day.) they’re going on opposite directions, otherwise he likely wouldn’t have recognized him from the back. the natural thing to do would likely be to avert his gaze and pass by as if nothing happened, but instead of that rational response to anxiety, daniel just stops dead in his tracks, eyes inevitably wide.

he realizes after a moment, and bows profusely. “sunbaenim,” he says. that’s all he says. 

a year ago, daniel didn’t know any idols at all aside from what would become per_se and a little of eclipse. being on sphere’s team on the mgas, and subsequently jinwook and jinki’s, warmed him to convex quickly, and bias aside, they would surely be his favorite boy group regardless. their vocalists are strong, royal in particular someone whose talent he really admires. it’s so strange seeing him up close like this. “you must be busy!” he realizes. “sorry!”

「  CALL ME BABY  」

performance / line distribution / for eye candy

when he had first received the news that they would be covering call me baby by unit black, he had looked at the piece of paper where the line distributions were. listening to the song he could remember having heard it somewhere a couple of years ago but he couldn't remember where. jaeyun found the color associated with his lines, maybe it was a blessing in disguise that he wasn't familiar with whose lines he had gotten-- because as he sat there and practiced them he didn't feel overwhelmed of any sort.

jaehyun had found himself curious however and later he had looked them up then the realization hit him that he had once again big shoes to fill. jaehyun exhaled deeply and when it was time to practice the dance with the group, he looked at changmin ( @michaxrk​ ) as he performed his little solo moment. a warm smile appeared on his face as he watched him from the sidelines, then also hearing woohyun ( @rkxroyal​ ) sing made jaehyun realize ( once again ) how talented the older was, the same with taeyong ( @rktaeyxng​ ) and he found himself wanting to do well-- to improve and make the members proud to say he was apart of convex.

for the next couple of weeks, jaehyun practiced the bridge the most-- looking at his own reflection while he sang and danced ( even if it was pre-recorded and his voice most likely would be tuned ), he still wanted to deliver a faithful performance and in his eyes, the bridge was incredibly impactful and he needed to do well

the day of the performance came and jaehyun watched himself in the mirror after he had gotten his hair and makeup done, while also making sure his clothes were sitting properly. he wasn't nervous but he did feel something in his chest, nervous excitement. it hadn't been that long since they had appeared on stage with pretty u and today they were greeting fans again.

there was also the fact that juhee ( @rksora​ ) was there and he still remembered the call they had at the end of june, where they had agreed to meet up this weekend. the month had passed so quickly-- he shook his head, he needed to manage his expression while he was there around people. in the monitor they watched the other performances, when it was their turn to walk up on stage, jaehyun followed the others onto the stage, while finding his place he nodded his head at the crowd to greet them.

when the music started, once again he looked at changmin as he started their song this time, it looked more polished now than at the start of the month. woohyun's and taeyong's voices sounded good, near the end of woohyun's part jaehyun walked up to his place and then when it was time he started lip-syncing ( which honestly felt weird, he didn't really like it ) so he danced, since he didn't have to sing he felt he could dance more precisely than before.

at the end of the third chorus jaehyun put on a melancholic expression while delivering the performance with juyeon, woohyun sang his high note. jaehyun felt the adrenaline of performing run through his veins as he danced on stage and looking into the camera made him feel alive ( even if he wasn't singing live ).

it ended sooner than he had thought and while walking off stage he saw juhee for a fleeting moment, he wondered if she had seen him as well but he couldn't dwell on that as he followed his members away from the stage.

woohyun thinks it’s lady luck shining down on him when the s-pop channel recording calls for sehun out the day after his birthday. it gives woohyun an opportunity to surprise the other, so he’s in good spirits as he walks in to sehun’s shared room with his present. it’s a pair of reeboks in the younger’s size, a set of coupons to the boba tea place down the road, and a small card addressed to sehun in woohyun’s familiar scrawl. he sets it down on sehun’s bed, whistling a tune under his breath, before he moves to leave, a happy grin on his face.

the note addressed to the birthday boy reads,

despite having s-pop recording scheduled a day after his birthday, sehun is all smiles and rainbows, still riding high from celebrating his birthday with the members. he’s received greetings from friends and family as well through text and sns, which adds up to his overall good mood. he’s on high spirits the whole time during recording, and the smile doesn’t disappear when they return to the dorms. he heads straight to his shared room, a skip in his every step and sees the package neatly placed on his bed. sehun blinks in confusion for a solid minite, wondering who it’s from before he moves to check the card. the last line hits him right home and has him tearing up a bit.

what did he do to deserve such wonderful people as friends?

sehun sniffles, his cheeks now aching from grinning so hard as he checks if the shoes do fit (it does!), laughing fondly at seeing the boba tea coupons, very touched and happy to receive gifts from his hyung. he wipes the few tears from his eyes before he turns in pursuit of woohyun, determined to give the other male a tight thank you hug.

         zhengting’s not entirely sure if this is appropriate.  it’s not, by any means, illegal or scandalous, but for some reason, it doesn’t feel entirely right.  he has a gift basket in hand, a small one filled to the brim with vitamin c blends, two bars of dark chocolate, and a cute little pig plush  ( a cheeky poke of his last name zhu, which sounds a lot like pig ).  in retrospect, it’s a nice thought -- woohyun had given him a welcome basket, so he’s only returning the favor.  but woohyun isn’t exactly new, so the gift just seems a bit out of place.

        but he already has it prepared and proudly displayed with a green bow that represents one of their group’s colors.  grip tightening around the base, he decides to just go for it.

        he knocks on @rkxroyal‘s room dorm, his heart thundering in his chest as he readies himself to say what he’s rehearsed twice before  ( just in case he rambles, as usual ).  “ah -- hyung.  i wanted to give this to you to, um, congratulate you on finishing the web drama recordings.”  and to thank you for welcoming me in the same way.

when she saw it happen, she could only wince. jihyo knew it wasn't her phone but it was still the idea of it. and it didn't seem like the person who dropped it had noticed it. there also wasn't anyone else around, so she scooped it up and tried to catch up with who she had come to realize was her senior. another member of convex she hadn't had a chance to speak with yet. "sunbae!" jihyo hadn't said anything until she was a breathe away from touching him.

"you dropped your phone." she held the device out towards him. "doesn't look like it cracked or anything." and once he took it, she took the chance to introduce herself. "and hello, i'm jihyo..a fairly new trainee." but it felt like it was coming to a point when she couldn't claim that anymore.

he yawned, slightly tired but still not ready to sleep. why not watch a movie instead? a few of the member’s were home but he was pretty sure no one had to leave. which meant, he could ask someone to watch it with him. ( and even if they said no, he still planned on doing it. ) so seonghwa set up his snacks at first. some drinks and candies were put on the coffee table and then he made his way to the kitchen to make some popcorn. once that was settled, he started to drift around the dorm. 

he walked from room to room until he came across woohyun. ( who, thankfully had his door open so seonghwa didn’t have to do the whole knocking thing. ) “hey, would you like to watch a movie with me? i have anything set up, just a little bored but i don’t want to sleep yet. what do you say?”

Going back to the time of the green ribbon festival in September, Minhee managed to catch up and see a few of the convex boys before they performed on stage which was nice. However, one of them wasn’t planned meeting since Minhee heading out from backstage and the sunshine decided to blind the view causing the sphere trainee walk straight into a familiar face who she hasn’t really spoken with since the Christmas event two years ago. Minhee lightly patted the shoulder of the one and only Woohyun follow by a wave, “Fancy bumping into you! Long-time no see Woohyun...or should I call you Royal or your Royal highness?” she couldn’t help herself to make a little joke about his stage name to help break the ice between since it has been a while.

with comeback preparations in full-swing, woohyun finds less and less time for the approaching birthdays of his members. there’s two this month– jinwook early and seungcheol a couple days after his. a lot of his gifts come with weeks and days of thought, gift hunting a head of time so he’s not overwhelmed with promotions or preparation. jinwook’s is more on impulse, with the want of being able to give him something before they head into the harsher time of preparation.

it’s a cute animal crossing plush keychain – celeste, he had chosen happily, remiscent of his and jinwook’s conversation about the cute character. bought for jinwook in mind after a couple hours of searching late into the night (a decision he doesn’t regret at all, even if he drags his feet through training the next morning). when it arrives, woohyun’s quick to wrap it in a cute gift box, attached with a brief note to jinwook.

he sets it on jinwook’s bed, right in the middle where he can’t miss it.

the day feels full of surprises, and when jinwook finally arrives back home, he discovers yet another: a small gift box on his bed, one last gift. he reads the note first, smiling immediately at the greeting. time flies, indeed. it’s been almost three years since they’d met when woohyun came over to sphere, and now jinwook can’t imagine a group without him. when he lifts the pretty lid of the box, his grin widens. let’s wish on it!, said the note. jinwook laughs to himself as he picks up the keychain, the plush soft under his fingertips. she’s perfect — representative of the stars, protecting their wishes, always looking up. it’s only too bad that jinwook didn’t get the chance to tell fans about the gift in his birthday stream.

that doesn’t mean jinwook can’t show it off, though. he clips it to the hook of his small carry-on travel bag, a cheery splash of color that will definitely show in the airport photos for their upcoming trip to la. he opens instagram and swipes to the camera, framing the keychain in animated hearts, with the note and box visible behind it. jinwook adds small text to the photo: ‘cute star girl from cute hyung 🥺’, and a tag for @convex_royal before posting it to his story. then he runs out of the room, eager to track woohyun down and hug him in person.

meeting the rest of the cast for a script reading and getting his measurements taken are the first few steps he takes. it’s different from his first experience acting. the cameo had been a fleeting experience. an entire day but this will take months and that thought settles on his mind during the wardrobe fittings. his accessories include glasses that he’s far too entertained by, a fact he shares by playing off the show name, grinning to himself when he manages to make at least one of the stylist’s assistants laugh. 

at first, he thought the frames were fake and he swears they are, picking them up with curiosity, asking if he could use his own or if they’d take the lens off for the glare of the camera or if they were anti-glare. he talks endlessly throughout the entire session that it’s a wonder they don’t tire of him or tell him to be quiet. ‘hold still,’ he definitely hears a few times, chuckling with a bow of his head and repetitive apologies, asking what kind of snacks or drinks they like so he can bring some to show his appreciation and sincerity. 

he even boasts of making the absolute best milk tea drinks and talks of the shop he used to work at, asking them to visit til one jokingly asks if he’s sponsored. with a cheeky grin, he tells them that the shop couldn’t afford him even with a discount because of the group he’s in. isn’t convex amazing, he regales of their talents and skills, asks if they’ve worked with hyun on heirs or sehun and taeyong with their photoshoots. if they know wooh— ah, royal hyung from his acting experiences too and insists they keep an eye out for the other members. the fitting goes by quickly the more he speaks and he’s in higher spirits than when he came in, this is really happening.
