In "Prey," a book written by Michael Creighton, there are hoardes of nanites that use "flock mentality" as displayed here to move around. Every time i see something like this i think of the nanites in the novel. They were the antagonists.
It's deeply chilling.
#prey#Michael creighton#birds#flocks#seriously no one has read this book ever#and it breaks my heart because it's so scary#when you sit down and think about it

my Stephanie Brown hot take is that she should get mad bitches now that she's single in comics. Yes yes shipping BUT the one time she had sex she was punished by the narrative via teen pregnancy. I think she should be allowed to have as much sex as she wants with zero consequences. Could be a lot of sex, could be a little. Point is she should get to do it without getting narratively baby trapped this time. she should get them pregnant, actually.
#ramblings of a lunatic#dc comics#dc#stephanie brown#this is a joke post but it also. isn't#like. i understand that what I'm asking for is a very slippery slope especially in the hands of the average comic writers (hates women sm)#but consider that i think it would be neat if female characters in the batmythos had sex lives again...#babs was out here having cybersex with ted kord in the 90s! helena had sex! black canary had sex and was kinda a gotham chara back then!#cass is generally more interested in justice than in sex and i abide by that#(tho user @casscain-mainly has great meta diving into the portrayal of cass' sexuality! good read and was on the brain while typing this)#steph however? canonical sex haver and got done dirty for it#like. personally i prefer to imagine that steph having sex with dean was 100% her choice#idk man she just felt like it! she wanted to bone#and maybe there's other factors at play there- Dean is by all accounts deeply unpleasant as a person so no doubt-#-stephs chronic low self-esteem played into her choice of man here#but again i like to imagine that it was all sane and consensual (tho not safe which again. lots to ponder there-#-like ik dixon was NAWT thinking abt this at the time but Steph's mom is a nurse. a semi-absent nurse but a nurse nonetheless)#(i find it hard to believe that Steph didn't have a basic sex education. meaning it was either a freak accident she got pregnant-#-or a wildly ooc decision on her part. OR some kind of outside pressure put on her by someone/something)#(we'll never know bc dixon hates me personally)#BUT ANYWAY yeah Steph has some kind of canonical sex drive and is just. soundly punished for it#and then she's with Tim (Paragon of Male Virtue in Dixons eyes) so no sex whatsoever no no no ☝️#and she's never had a seriously considered love interest outside of Tim to ever consider having sex with#ALL THIS TO SAY. let Steph have sex again but without the narrative punishment in 2025#if this is what it takes to get her back in bat books so be it#also she should get to hook up with some age appropriate fellow heroes. as like fun one offs#who's in her age range? blue beetle (jaime)? circuit breaker? assuming we're trying to make this canonical and (sigh) can't pull women#I'm blanking on men who aren't vaguely too old/young for steph or gay. or just awkward (i.e like. kon el. that'd just feel weird yknow?)#ANYWAY yeah. The Deca itself amazes me, but its fandom is on a whole other level. We have one canon source material (and a few other mentions scattered throughout the Whoniverse), but the fans have managed to tinker with it so much that fanon is actually more popular than canon and more wildly accepted. And I love y'all for it
#doctor who eu#the deca#i don't think there's any mention on the book about Millennia having blue hair? not as far as i recall#and yet everyone agrees that she has blue hair#this little corner of the doctor who fandom is absolutely incredible. my favorite little corner#this post came to me while i was in the shower planning on how i'm going to write my next deca fic#it's been about TWO WHOLE YEARS since i had the idea but i can't pick the right beginning for the story#i think i have a good one now. but i haven't made a lot of progress#is the who tops my one hit wonder? lmao#(not a hit but it's the story i'm most proud of so)#but seriously i have been a deca enjoyer for years ever since i found it which was like in 2014 i think? idk#and i only read the book a few years later and i was like.... “oh. so we made up all the cool stuff about them”#divided loyalties is a good book actually but the fandom made the deca more fun let's all be honest

i am so disturbed. i just picked up my 12 year old sister from school and she asked me if ive ever read icebreaker because girls at school were talking about it. i don’t talk that much crap about booktok but if what it’s doing is giving smut recommendations to literal children we need to pack it up. and i know we aren’t supposed to want parents to police what their children read for various reasons but this is one of those instances where i think parents should be paying closer attention. i am probably hypocritical saying this because of what i read in middle school but for some reason there is a distinct difference to me between me hiding the fanfiction i was reading from my parents and these kids shamelessly being able to buy NA books at the store. it’s not even just the sexual content but it’s weird to me that these kids want to read books about people in college dealing with issues and having conversations they shouldn’t be able to fathom. it’s saddens me so deeply that kids aren’t kids anymore and are so eager to grow up through wearing makeup, wearing revealing clothes, and now apparently reading adult books. it’s a separate conversation but this has to be connected to the decline of YA as a genre as well. i’m spiraling now but this was just completely shocking and horrifying to me for so many reasons
#my sister has NEVER and i mean EVER wanted to read for fun#she has so many learning disabilities we can barely get her to read for school and those books will only interest her if theyre audiobooks#now you’re telling me THIS is what she wants to read??? seriously???#the smut is bad enough but it’s genuinely every other element of the book that takes me aback as well#it’s unfathomable to me that kids should have ANY interest in a college romance#the high school ones are also good kids i promise. please work your way up#mine

it is beyond infuriating how anne rice seems to insist on marius being a positive force in anyone's life ever. like she can't fully commit to exploring the fact he groomed armand and has repeatedly taken away his consent for what marius thinks is best (take the end of TVA as an example) and just kind of flatly puts it in the narrative. there's not really much interest in how these horrific events make marius come across as the worst because EVERYONE loves him. for gods sake, lestat learns from armand exactly what marius did to him in TVL and then proceeds to go find marius and be super friendly to him in the same fucking book. even armand and pandora, two of the people who have MORE than enough right to hate him, do not. it doesnt feel like shes trying to explore the toxicity of the abusive dynamic he traps them in, it just is there. and like yeah ofc the toxic vampire romance series but i think that this should be handled with more care. and it is not ever really framed in a way that she is interested in exploring how marius should easily be one of the most horrific characters in this series because it kind of feels like sa/rape/grooming/other things of that sort are just put there to further plot and not to really get the respect that they deserve in a medium.
#twist rambles#vc posting#grooming mention#for blocklist sorry im on my im really mad about this fucking series soapbox again#to be fucking honest she treats slavery similar. like its just THERE and the characters doing it dont really feel bad about it (much like m#rius doesnt seem to.. feel much if any remorse for arm.and) and it is just like... ok heres another bad thing with no examination. this isn#a super coherent post but i went a bit forward to see how b&g was handling the arm.and stuff and oh my god. oh im so mad. like i just... i#wish so badly that arma.nds abuse was taken seriously other than haha its sooo quirky that mari.us is in a position of power over him and#provides housing money sex comfort etc for him and is abusing him but hes sooo happy with himmmm. like he fucking sold him into sex slavery#and we are supposed to root for him#ask to tag#sorry this is just. its a very triggering part of the books but its something that i kind of keep returning to to mull over because it is#handled really badly. like i think she was trying to go for a lo.lita vibe (iirc she did actually mention nabok.ov as an inspiration) but#didnt really care enough to examine WHY that is an interesting take on the subject matter. not even to get into pan.doras stuff bc its just#really bad but at least he waited until she was an adult i suppose. like i will give anne one thing that she has characters and (poorly han#led) writing that makes you really think and analyze. which i think is where i enjoy media that is like... this kind of sucks at points but#u can tell the authors viewpoints soo transparently. and u can examine it thru this. like i think thats why i find the gr.ell run of GA int#resting too bc u can telll that man is a libertarian and doesnt respect women. and then claims to do so. its interesting to me. anyways#did u guys know she defended bill clin.ton when the monica stuff came out and victim blamed her. just a funny coincidence.#sorry for the really long tag rant but i am sooo fed up with how she treats this topic forever and ever. bc its been this way forever.#anyways back to reading had to get that out. lmk if u need me to tag this bc its a lot of tws :)

Yeah this is about right (as always my thoughts are in the tags so there's actually kei content there lmao)
#Hester I adore you they could never make me hate you. Seriously the first chapter in 6 (bad candy) is like my favourite opener#Kei they could NEVER EVER make me hate you. did nothing wrong ever. rhian when I CATCH you#its so funny how my two favourite characters just like. hate each other. like japeth literally kills him#sad cause they're so SIMILAR. theyre both victims of Dog Metaphor its so sad that kei does Not like japeth in the slightest#personally if they had a good long discussion about their emotions at like 3am they could've probably stopped TCY from happening#but alas. Aric. somehow its all his fault again. why do I have an aricposting tag but not a keiposting one.#Hester easily has the best overall characterisation arc I love love love the way soman writes her#I remember when I read 6 for the first time#before japeth insanity happened#I used to anticipate her chapters over like everyone else's. Hester the 1 lesbian in the series you are deeply loved#I could write whole essays about japeth and kei's characterisation it is so sad that soman forgets kei exists#like he's meant to be rhian's eagle. that's his job. that's what he's spent a Long Time anticipating becoming#but rhian refuses to acknowledge it. instead he calls Japeth his eagle in book 4's ending#He eventually falls in love with Sophie#he only ever cares about the crown#how he GETS to the crown#and bringing his mother back. he lies more than japeth#and never once does he get to be the eagle. There's only three spaces - lion/eagle/snake - and he doesn't get to be any of them#dont even get me started on how he dies. surrounded by white swans. being purely good#god rhian II try not to fuck EVERYTHING over challenge. and also Aric. its all arics fault as well#keiposting#japethposting#actually not really jposting. didn't do it that much#sge#tsfgae#school for good and evil#the school for good and evil#sfgae#the school of good and evil#as much as I adore Hester I dont think I will talk about her much in detail ever so no hesterposting yet

#Fifteen episode 2. Mmmmmmhhhhhh#The animation quality DOES get worse. This episode shows it lol#So many static frames stretching for so long... I feel so sorry for the animators.#I still stand by the fact that if studios can't provide enough budget or time to their animators seasons simply shouldn't be released.#But after all who am I to talk...#The scene of Dazai shooting at the soldier makes my blood freeze. Rimbaud throwing books in the fire is equally upsetting#Like I /know/ it's an anime about literature with constant metafiction references–#and that this too has a symbolic meaning and is *supposed* to be upsetting but that said.#Seeing whole books being thrown in the fire is such a disturbing sight that calls for such a visceral response in me 😭😭😭#The amv opening is nice! Makes me even more bitter about season 5 one lmao. Of the kind#“not only we had to get a amv opening (((while we deserved a wholly ss/kk focused opening)))‚ we even got a bad amv ending at that”#Mmmmhhhh I hateeeeeee how they handled the Sheep 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 Seriously this is just another bug instance of#“me and the author have WHOLLY different views of what human nature is like”#I just... Don't think... Children joining together in an hostile environment would act like that. I'm so much more of a t/pn kind of guy.#Children who come together to survive would protect each other and especially would trust each other. Why is there such a big lack of trust#Why doesn't Shirase trust Chuuya? Why doesn't Chuuya trust Shirase (with handling more information)? It's just dumb#It's dumb. It sounds stupid from the very plot aspect that Chuuya would act so shady and suspicious with the Sheep instead of being open–#about what his course of action is. It's like he was trying to have them turn on him. It's stupid of Shirase to mistrust Chuuya–#when in eight years he never gave them any reason to doubt of him.#And I know right as I'm writing this that someone is going to read it and think “you're completely missing on the unbalance of power that–#creates these dynamics of lack of trust” but the thing is exactly that I don't see why that unbalance of power would ever come to be!#They're all just kids. They're aware of that. If Chuuya never had malicious intentions towards Shirase‚ I don't see why he would ever fear–#his betrayal. Likewise‚ I don't see why Shirase and the other Sheep members would ever be so manipulative and disrespectful towards–#Chuuya if he's been nothing but kind to them (and we have no reason to think otherwise)?#It all comes down to: I think people are inherently good and willing to help each other. The author thinks not lmao. It is what it is#But I wish you could see t/pn. Where kids are constantly trying to outwit each other in order to OUT-SACRIFICE THEMSELVES for the others lo#I love t/pn it's my life... I miss it#random rambles#And if anyone would like to argue that Dazai specifically set them off to betray each other... Yes I DO understand that's what the story–#is suggesting. I just don't think Dazai - for how good. and infallible he is - is enough to scrape long-term relationships of trust.

Fortnight of Books, Day 14
A book you didn’t read in 2024 that will be your #1 priority in 2025?
I wouldn't say it's my top priority, but I chased a reread of Little Women all over my TBR last year and never settled down to it. It's still waiting patiently on my shelf for me.
I also still have not got around to reading Emily B. Martin's Ashes to Fire (I read the first book, Woodwalker, back in 2023) so hopefully I can finally get to it this year.
New book you are most anticipating for 2025?
I'm assuming this means new releases, but I nearly always read new-ish releases by pure happenstance, so I'm going with new-to-me:
Pawn in Frankincense by Dorothy Dunnett. It's not actually in my Top Five anticipated reads for 2025, but it is the book I am most dreading. Because I was so stressed out at the end of the last book and where things were setting up for this installment that I broke my own rule and looked up spoilers (actually super difficult with this fandom) anddddddd it's not gonna be good. I'm gonna read it but I will suffer the entire time. (If anyone reading this has read Pawn in Frankincense, this is me holding out my hand begging for help. Please hold me.)
From my Top Five list, I'm excited to finally read Sorcery and Cecelia. I love Wrede's writing so I have no idea why it's taken so long to get to this series.
#mine#fortnight of books#and we're done!#that was fun!#2024 reading list#2025 reading list#the Lymond Chronicles is one series I do not strictly recommend to ANYONE#I think it's a highly acquired taste and--while it has some elements I LOVE (as evidenced by my continued suffering)--#it also has some stuff that's more...dodgy?#like...this is one of those series I barely acknowledge as having read because I'm afraid of being judged lol#except that precious few people I interact with have read it so it's safe-ish#(she says vaguely)#seriously. with practically every other thing I read I do not care whether or not I'm judged#Ruby judges me all the time for my reading#so does my sister#but this series is just...a different beast#(it's because there are few happy endings. I really think that's it. I love a happy ending and Dunnett is constantly going 'haHA! no 🫶🏻')#(we also got my LEAST favorite type of character ever and he's still a huge pain and I want him to die horribly)

Sherlock Holmes (2009) is an alright movie but why on earth is Holmes wearing a belt. Like yeah first of all not historically accurate, but second of all... WHY is he at times wearing BOTH a belt and suspenders??? That's fucked up don't do that. One of those things does fuck-all in that case.
#he does wear only suspenders at one point which is a relief but like. this bothered me a lot#it's a gay ass movie but godddd STOP BICKERING it's fun in certain amounts but a bit too much for me here#also the constant dropping of slurs toward the character with dwarfism....#like ok i get in 2009 no one knew that that word is a slur but it still sucks to hear it. it wasnt necessary esp that many times#do i recommend this movie? uh. I GUESS! it has fun stuff in it. doesnt always take itself too seriously#but it's not like the best thing ever. it's just okay#i'm still reading the study in scarlet so idk how good of an adaptation of the books it is but i get the feeling its not very faithful#but adaptations of classic books very rarely are accurate#oh wait also the soundtrack of this movie is good!

I can't believe the Younger Brother (1689) by Aphra Behn has the only one bed trope
#act iv scene i#olivia is in disguise as mirtilla's page endimion and she's wooing welborn on her own behalf#and welborn is like well im hosting a gentleman in my lodgings right now but u can sleep w me#and olivia is like uhmmm uhmmm i can't do that not for any particular reason i just can't sleep in ur bed#(bc she's modest but she is kinda tempted. but also worried if she denies too hard he might suspect her of being actually a woman)#and he's like what are you afraid my bed's diseased? do u think im gay? im telling u there's nowhere else for us both to sleep#im not gonna make u sleep on the floor kid#PLEASE#the younger brother might be one of my new favorites from behn. i haven't finished it yet but it kinda has everything i love from her#mirtilla in particular is such an interesting character#text post#aphra behn#restoration comedy#in the edition edited by janet todd for vol. 7 of the collected works#i believe it's based off of the original quarto text that was published after behn's death#i highly suspect a lot of this prose dialogue is supposed to be blank verse#SO. MUCH. of it flows exactly like blank verse. it kinda bothers me#i do dream about editing and publishing my own edition of behn's plays and i would definitely amend these to be verse#i wonder if montague summers' version is verse? idk this is the first janet todd edited play ive read#i dont yet know the differences between their editing styles#god i wish more than 2 ppl in history had ever bothered to edit and publish this woman's collected works#oxford world classics should definitely put out another volume of her plays#i love the one they have featuring the rover/feigned courtesans/lucky chance/emperor of the moon#but she's got what like 15 other extant plays? and oxford world classics has the range and capabilities to do it#or if penguin classics ever wants to pretend they're really as good as oxford they can print their own#as far as diversifying the canon and widening the availability of older texts. oxford still beats penguin any day#but it does piss me off that no classic book publishers take this period of early-modern women's drama and proto-novels very seriously#or rather. no big ones that i know other than oxford#im not counting print-on-demand companies that reprint the texts of public domain works w no editing#those serve a purpose but those are not leaders in the publishing industry for a reason. theyre not sposta be

Yknow, instead of basing a lackluster at best character off a nazi, Coco could have been Chajka, based off the heroic Chajka Klinger, a jewish woman who was essentially a scribe of history
You can even keep the minibag machine gun considering the history of jewish women hiding guns in their purses
#rwde#idk if yall have read the light of days by Judy Batalion but that shit made me cry#do not read that book at work lmao#but in all seriousness it's a v good book i highly recommend#why stan a shitheel based on a nazi when you can recall and rejoice people who did their best during the absolute worst of times#side tangent but reading this book has turned me off all nazi shit#like obvs we grow up w 'nazis r bad bc death and destruction' but reading the individual accounts#following some folks from teen to young death even in a narration#its haunting#its v much the reason i hate jojo rabbit(movie)/caging skies(book)#i do not ever want to see a nazi in a positive light#human? yes. quirky and relatable? FUCKING NO#idk why but the entire book chajka was always the one I felt most drawn to#i wish she'd had a happy ending but i honestly can't say that i would've done any different in those circumstances#i hope she knows peace and that her efforts weren't in vain#whats a proper jewish sendoff for the deceased? im p sure rip is christian#either way chajka i love you

#hffjfhfhhhhghgh#sometimes you think you’re over a guy but then you have a normal conversation with him like a normal person and proceed to think about it#for the next ten hours#my silly little INFP brain is being insufferable about this#like seriously I don’t want to date a guy who curses like a sailor I don’t#but we just get along so well together? he was homeschooled like me? he’s an lotr fanatic (as in he’s read the books)? he has OPINIONS#about little women? he’s an agatha christie fan?? he had reasonable things to say in biblical studies a couple years ago (which is more#than I can say for 95 percent of the people in that class)?#but I mean it doesn’t matter we’ve known each other for nearly three years and I can’t tell that he’s ever had that kind of interest in me#(granted I am a TERRIBLE judge)#fun fact though he is the guy who read a story I wrote freshman year and read a romance scene and exclaimed ‘that’s it! that’s what love is#supposed to be!’#I mean how was I SUPPOSED to react#if nothing else he’s definitely one of Anne’s kindred spirits and I think I can live with that#anyway sorry feel free to ignore I just needed to ramble#I drove for like three hours today and it was just swirling around in my head the whole time#will probably delete later because there are a couple people who follow me who know me irl and would probably know exactly what I’m talking#about. they’re not super active though so#(and yes this is Alcott boy. although hilariously before I knew his name I called him Agatha Christie boy)#on a lighter note I may have convinced him to watch otgw because it has Elijah wood in it lol

Please tell me Sam didn’t just make a reference to the fucking Hatchet.
#Critical Role#CR3#CR3-50#''If Xandis has a cardiac arrest...'' stop right there Sam Riegel#lol#god damn I hated that book#gave me massive anxiety while reading it while also being one of the endless schlog of the ''boy does all the things ever'' genre#boring and distressing what a fucking combo. if you're going to be distressing maybe also be interesting?#still a reasonably good book despite being one of my most hated genres all time and two of my most hated genres at the time I read it#unlike huck finn. which. Seriously there has to be a better book with the same message that isn't excruciating to read#fuck twain fuck his prose fuck his inability to make either of his perspective characters likeable#and especially fuck his inability to end a goddamn novel#it has been a decade since I had to read either of those books but I sure do still have resentment#and my begrudging respect remains extended to only one of them. Never want to hear about it again though bleugh#I'd rather read stephen king than reread either of those and I hate his writing too.#I suffered through like 5 of his books before giving up#ignore morg#morg rants

I got called a Zionist seven times and told to kill myself twice for posting about the crowd of Pro Palestine protesters chanting Heil Hitler and doing Nazi salutes at the Olympics. "What universe does OP live in." The real one. Where antisemitism is alive and well, and you are perpetuating it.
The thing that people fail to understand is that antisemitism has always been a progressive value. From it's conception, the leftist movement has failed to reject the idea that Jews control the world and have a disproportionate influence over world events. Therefore, antisemitism isn't just tolerated, but celebrated, as it's seen as another version of "punching up." That's why our pleas about how antisemitic the left has become go in one ear and out the other. You say antisemitism, they hear "reverse racism." They don't care if people or movements are antisemitic, because they believe it is challenging the status quo.
Of course, Jews have never controlled the world and in every country outside of Israel are an oppressed minority. But as long as leftists continue to believe in the conspiracy theory that Jews are the ones truly in power, we will never get anywhere trying to address antisemitic bias. On the left, antisemitism is considered "speaking truth to power." Because they believe Jews are the power to be fought. Are we really surprised that antisemitism is so celebrated now?
#Gingerswagfreckles#Antisemitism#leftist antisemitism#leftist hypocrisy#What universe do you live in where people take antisemitism on the left seriously lol?#Name literally one single antisemitic incident ever that was perpetuated by leftists that the left didn't excuse or ignore#Oh wait sorry you think there has literally never been antisemitism on the left that wasn't a Zionist Conspiracy Lie#And don't understand why that is antisemitic. Ofc.#Also sorry does this bitch literally think the USSR wasn't antisemitic lol#Tell me you have never read a history book without telling me you never read a history book#My family literally immigrated to the US to escape the progroms happening in Russia during the early soviet union
