Three... Guards?: Ch 16
Summary: Tifa finds Cloud at the train station in Sector Seven. It’s the first time she’s seen him in seven years. But he’s not alone. Three silver haired boys protected him. Three silver haired boys that triggered memories of her hometown. Of steel through her chest. Of SOLDIER First Class. Of Him.
Kalm offered a small break from the journey awaiting them all.
Please Enjoy!

Chapter 16: Queen's Blood
Tifa and Strife left the rooftop not long after spotting the former Crimson Soldier, Tifa to attempt to get some rest while Strife said he had a few more things to take care of before he could turn in for the night. The older blond dropped Tifa off at her bedroom door, and she took one final deep breath before opening it.
Almost everything was the same as she left it, but her bed was claimed by the crimson beast they found in the lab.
“Sorry…” came the only apology, Aerith's whisper just above the quiet breaths of the other occupants.
The couch sat unattended with a white sheet and blanket on its cusions. The two remnants of Sephiroth that shared the room were laying in their same locations with only pillows, stirring slightly away from the door.
“Don't worry about it,” Tifa brushed off softly before taking the saved place.
* * *
“Apparently it's ‘Queens Blood’,” Strife explained to Cloud, blue eyes locked on the gifted deck from the owner of the inn.
“It's an effective method for obtaining information, cards, and gil,” Genesis defended.
“So why didn't you save us all trouble and get a third room?” Barret called out.
“Because I'm no master of a children's card game, as easy as it is to pick up. Abilities become difficult to manage and decks are limited to fifteen cards. I lost. And per our agreement, I donated my previous winnings to street musicians.”
“Look, I'll take care of getting the rest of us upgraded weapons if you two can focus on finding Shinra's next move,” Cloud suggested while holding a hand to his head, earning an odd look from his future self. “You said you've already changed things. Let's make sure Shinra and Sephiroth are on the same track so we can cut them off.”
The Remnant attached to Cloud's hip stared at the ground despite the eyes on him.
“And also… maybe…” Aerith spoke up with a small raise of her hand, “relax and enjoy the town a little? Only for a few hours.”
Both Cloud Strifes stared hard.
“We could all use a real rest,” the one armed father agreed. “As much as sleepin’ on rocks in the middle of dead lands was nice and all.”
“And we won't be stopping anyone if we burn ourselves out,” the bartender mentioned, her crimson eyes sparkling against mako blues. “And I… I'm still recovering from everything last night.”
Strife closed his eyes with a sigh and Cloud turned away.
“...Fine. Two hours. Then we get out of town,” the leader relented.
Aerith and Tifa high fived.
“Broden said to meet him here when we're ready to leave Kalm,” Strife added.
“Then that's where we'll meet.” Cloud said no more on the matter. He felt the weight of the child at his side but made no mention of it, walking out into the Republic themed town outside.
Worn cobblestone streets connected every inch of commercial and residential land, mapping the town so perfectly it was simultaneously difficult and easy to lose oneself in it. It took longer than Cloud would've liked to identify the weapons shop.
The owner seemed surprised when they walked in. Cloud's hands itched for the sword on his back, but he forced himself to wait. “Something wrong?”
“Not used to seeing kids in here is all. Is he old enough?”
“He won't be touching anything. He likes to look.”
“Well, then what will it be today?”
“What do you have?” Despite a glance around the store, none of the weapons on display suited his party at all.
Just their luck, the store had everything useful in the back, but there was no way Cloud or anyone in their group had enough money to buy a gun prosthetic, a double wide long sword, a magic staff, two sets of combat gloves, a feathered collar, a new pistol, and a small katana.
Cloud purchased his own upgrade first and walked away.
The child at his side poked at his pockets.
The blond shuffled through its contents and found the small box gifted by the store owner. “Huh. Good idea.”
It looked like it was time to duel.
* * *
The flower girl paced along the entrances to far too many colorful shops, each with bows and collars and necklaces of beautiful and sometimes amazing power.
“We still need instant knockout resistance, frog immunity, physical and magical dampening resistance, poison immunity if we're lucky,  and Stop diffusers. How long do you think it'll take us to make enough Gil for all the accessories we need?” Aerith turned to the oldest boy, who stared at her like a Nibel deer in headlights.
“Uh? Uhhh???”
“Okay, maybe that's too much to ask. Can you carry the bags then?”
“Yes please.”
* * *
“Why didn't you take Loz for this…?” Yazoo questioned as he balanced a multitude of bottles. Potions, ethers, antidotes, meals. The pile blocked most of his sight.
“Because you said you wanted to check out the tavern.” Barret's loud reply came. “The hell did you think I was doin’ bringin’ ya?”
“I assumed you volunteered to allow Tifa more rest…”
“Well that too. Can't have her tucker out so quickly. Been through a lot and all.”
“Can't we create some of these items for free using an item transmuter and what we found in the badlands…?”
“Find us a transmuter without Shinra tracking and then we'll start talking.”
The boy sighed, adjusting the bottles. “Can we at least purchase a sack for this then…?”
“I'll think on it.”
* * *
“Why do you have interest in this anyway?” Genesis questioned before playing the first Shinra Trooper card of the game, keeping the real troop in sight through a window of a café.
“The game represents human tactical abilities. I appreciate your willingness to play a few rounds with me.” Red XIII played a grassland wolf. Both recently escaped lab rats kept an ear on Shinra's men, hoping for a useful slip up.
“I have to ask, how did a creature like you end up in Hojo's lab?”
“I could ask the same of you.”
“Fair enough. But I'm positive my story will trap us here until dawn. May I at least ask where you're from?”
The creature grumbled. The man in red sighed in defeat, a new card on the mat.
* * *
“How dare you break through my impenetrable fortress by cheating,” the woman surrounded by a wall of cardboard boxes proclaimed.
“What cheating? You're delusional,” Cloud scoffed.
“I see just fine with these protected eyes I have, and the little one at your side does not hide his subtle hints to your deck.”
Mako eyes met a head of silver hair that refused to look at either players. “He could not care less.”
“I'll only accept defeat and give you the reward you so desire if you allow me to play the child in a fair match.”
“Are you really that petty?”
“You walk through my impenetrable defenses and judge how I view my enemies?”
“...fair enough.” Cloud sighed, kneeling down to capture the boy's attention. “Just one round so we can move on?”
Kadaj gave the smallest of pouts.
“I will never ask you to do this again.”
The remnant hesitantly grabbed the cards, eyes glazed and movements slow.
“Now,” The woman announced, “let the battle begin.”
First turn belonged to the boy who skimmed the cards, reading each ability carefully. He kept looking between his hands and the playing field.
Cloud looked over the child's shoulder.
“Ah-ah-ah! No aid!”
“It's not aid.” The blond pressed a button behind the dragon, signaling the next move. All of Kadaj's cards required too many pawns to use. He couldn't do anything if he wanted to.
His bad start was not balanced by his skill. In fact, Cloud stepped behind the child because he kept cringing at every decision made.
He might be able to turn this around if he-
Nope. Never mind.
But if he uses that card just right-
Of course not. Not a chance.
The end score tipped the scales with the greatest number of chips: 25 to 28.
Well at least she was bad at the game too.
Cloud couldn't wait to get back on track and end these useless hours of rest. At least it earned them all new weapons.
.
.
.
.
To be continued…
Thanks for reading!

Note: I tired myself out on this chapter very quickly. Turns out I'm not cut out for filler. We'll get back on track next time in the Grasslands.

i have updated my verse page with the following below to make it seem less ridiculous as possible ( but still expect a bit of dumbassery nonetheless bc i’m working with quite a lot of challenging lore info :”3 )
This main verse is EXTREMELY canon divergent, has quite a degree of lore bending ( but trying my best to keep within the lore common sense ) and is the beginning of how my crisis core(ish) sephiroth returned.
After the events of Final Fantasy VII, Sephiroth regains his grip on his former self, which resurfaced after meeting his mother in the lifestream, and the influence from JENOVA cells weakened with the help of Ilfana. ( That is not to say that he was not responsible for the events that happened prior - he still is ). While it took 2 years on the surface world, time flowed differently in where Sephiroth was and he was trapped for decades, as his body had long became such that it cannot be absorbed while his consciousness remained strong. While imprisoned, he communicated frequently with Ilfana and Aerith. However, he was spat back out in the surface as the remnants called upon the second reunion.
Through the events of Advent Children, he is cooperating with Rufus Shinra ( @ivory-paragon ) to get rid of the disease that was caused by JENOVA, an alien being that he now fully acknowledged had wiped out the ancients a long time ago. JENOVA had taken his form, assimilated his memories, behaviorism and superior intelligence through merging with a massive number of his clones, along with having grown exponentially more powerful as it remained in the lifestream and sent remnants to conduct the second reunion.
In the events of FFVII Remake, Sephiroth is once more in cooperation with Rufus Shinra prior to the games events and follows his own objective in defeating the alien. In exchange, he was given accommodation in Midgar Slums Sector 5 as Sephiroth had chosen, have his expenses paid for and had Rufus’s aid in covering up should anyone start to suspect his identity. Nibelheim was still burned down but it was done with a clone sent by JENOVA-SEPHIROTH from the lifestream whilst my Sephiroth left amid his time in the mansion to return to Midgar. During his travel, he learned that Nibelheim was burned down and ‘Sephiroth’ died, leaving him to head to the slums under his previously used disguise and lived alongside Aerith since then.
To help hide his identity, he was commonly referred to the guy who looks like Sephiroth, had his hair tied up and wears a new set of clothes HERE. White coat instead of dark blue.
BELOW IS SEPHIROTH’S UPDATED BACKSTORY IN HIS BIO PAGE TW: MENTIONS OF REPRODUCTIVE ..... THINGS. TW: HOJO
reminder that my sephiroth is aerith’s sibling and this has been played out with @gainsborro ( but happy to write this with other aerith blogs if they’d allow it ! )
Two decades ago, Hojo transferred a drugged Ilfana’s embryos into Lucrecia to have the latter become a surrogate parent to Sephiroth so as to allow Hojo more freedom to experiment with an ancient kid without the watchful eyes of Professor Gast and claim the kid from Ilfana. Moreover, he took sperm samples of Gast to increase the chances of childbirth.
Five years after Sephiroth was born, Gast escaped with Ilfana, not knowing of what Hojo did and Sephiroth remained identified as Lucrecia’s child. Sephiroth was raised by Hojo since then and was a natural child prodigy that had the intelligence and ability to learn and understand quickly several times quicker than an average child. However, Hojo was more interested in how the JENOVA cells inside of him would play out and his body underwent several experiments to test his immunity against various toxins, cell strength and prowess against powerful monsters.
In the process, Hojo also tried to isolate and manipulate Sephiroth in order to avoid child to grow up becoming attached to any notions aside from unknowingly working towards Hojo's objectives and becoming ShinRA's poster hero, fearing that Sephiroth might stray away from his plans for the sake of other humanly social needs. To enforce Sephiroth with the idea that he is special and hence, should not mingle closely with other normal people, lest Sephiroth becomes able to choose to let go of his 'superiority' for the sake of attachments. Hence why Sephiroth never had a real purpose for himself and a majority of his life was dedicated to Hojo and ShinRA - for Hojo to supervise him, unknowingly walking towards Hojo's goal of having him rising above all of humanity.
Overcame with guilt during Sephiroth's early years (about 4 to 5), Lucrecia enlisted the help of Gast to try and take Sephiroth from Hojo, revealing everything to him before sealing herself in the crystal. Unbeknownst to her, Gast was killed before he could make a plan and Ilfana, the only remaining person who knew about Sephiroth's birth, was captured by Shinra.
Before Gast was killed, he sent a letter to Sephiroth about his real parents, picture of Ilfana and shared the news that he has a little sister so that he wouldn't be so lonely before reassuring him that Gast will return to him. However, that day never came and Sephiroth was left waiting. When he finally learned of Ilfana's capture, he helped the two escape by opening the door to their cell.

Treats and Tricks
It was past ten and the doorbell was finally slowing down. The pumpkin on the path had survived the bulk of the night. The little wolves and witches were heading home now, making way for the real thing to haunt the night. And the candy was just about done. Time to turn off the porch light and call it a night.
The doorbell rang out, beating the lightswitch for the while. Stragglers, but not too late. There was time for one more round.
"Trick or treat!"
"Well, hello, there! Three of you, eh? What have we got?"
Three stragglers, late for a school night, and truth be told, a rather scraggly looking bunch. There was a ghost, an honest, old-fashioned, made from a bedsheet ghost. The eyeholes at least lined up but little sneakers poked out below. There was an alien, the cheap plastic mask kind that cost ten gil at any corner store. The kid slouched, and his t-shirt said 'Take me to your dealer'. He'd be a right pumpkin kicker in a few years, no doubt about that.
There was a taller one behind them in some sort of lizard costume. With a tutu. And a crown. Well, there had been stranger things in the night. And they were just kids and it was all about the spirit of the thing anyway.
"Let's see, here's something for the ghost, got me there, very spooky."
"Thank yoooooooo!" Ghost yowled and he wasn't half bad.
"And something for the little blue man. Please don't abduct me now."
"I come in peace. Long as you got candy anyway." Oh, he was going to be a tp master, this one.
"And a little something for... Um, what are you, dear?"
"I'm a dragon princess!" she declared.
"Oh, of course. The tiara makes it obvious."
"Thank you, loyal subject." Pretty good curtsy too.
"Alright, guys, one more house and home we go, okay?" Now that was a real scare.
"Awww, Dad."
"Come on, we already started late."
"I know, I know, and that's my fault, but it's still a school night." The shadowy parental figure stepped into the light.
Well, looked like it was all his fault. He was half-assing it too. The silver wig had seen better days. Probably why he had it pulled back in a ponytail. And he hadn't bothered with the uniform, either the WRO or SOLDIER classic version, just plainclothes as it got, with the cheap glowing contacts to finish it off.
"I'll make up for it next year, okay?" he said, "make sure it's not so last minute."
"Okay." It was a grudging unison. Adult eyes met and Dad shrugged.
"Busy day, huh?"
"The job is what it is," he said. "Come on, kids."
"Oh, hang on." Might as well empty the candy bowl. "I've got a lollipop for the General, if he wants it."
"Oh?" Dad turned. "What flavor?"
"Looks like cherry."
Maybe it was the flickering porch display, but those contacts looked like they glowed a little brighter. "Sounds great to me. Thank you."
And the porch light went off and that was it for the night.
~.~.~
"Good hustle, Dad," Ella said. "That's how much now?"
"I'll let you know when I empty my pockets." Sephiroth slid the lollipop from one side of his mouth to the next.
Ari took a soft swing at him with his candy bag. "You're supposed to dress up as something you're not."
Rei stopped in his tracks and shared a glance with Ella through the scissors-snipped holes in his sheet. Ella shrugged. "Nobody here has room to talk. Look, there's the car."
"Race ya!" Ari yelled and tore off.
"Hey, wait up, you nuts." Ella took off behind them.
Sephiroth crunched the last of his lollipop and strolled the rest of the way. "Hey, Dad, next year we get to Trick-or-treat longer, right?" Ella said, "I only got a couple more years before I'm too old."
"Don't say that," Sephiroth said, wondering exactly when she had gotten that tall. "I never got to go trick-or-treating when I was a kid and look at me now." He whipped two full size candy bars out of his jacket.
"Sheesh, Dad," Ari said. Sephiroth could see the eyes rolling behind the cheap mask.
"Yeah, old man," Ella said. "How long you going to ride that 'Deprived as a Child' train?"
He whipped out two more candy bars and a strawberry licorice whip. "As long as I can get away with it."

I know that comparing tv shows and stuff to current events is tasteless and bad regardless of how well-intentioned it might mean to be
and I'm not gonna do that.
but I just think it's funny that works of fiction; books, movies, video games, comics, music- a significant majority of art that has been made in the past getting close to hundred years has been very adamantly pro rebellion and against oppressive power structures.
like, let's just look at the most popular shit.
books: 1984, to kill a mockingbird, the great gatsby, the lord of the rings, huckleberry finn, alice in wonderland, charlotte's web, a tale of two cities, the grapes of wrath, anna karenina, war and peace, price and prejudice, great expectations, gone with the wind...
hmm let's see: fascism, racism, post-war, evil that threatens all free men, racism, growing up in a scary world, giving your life for a worthy cause, political revolution, the struggles of the impoverished, democracy versus facism, war, misogyny, the importance of morality over financial achievement, and the fucking civil war. I'm not even MENTIONING the oversaturation of the YA market with maximum ride and percy jackson and artemis fowl and harry potter and divergent and the hunger games and that's just off the top of my head. classic popular books have been written with themes of opposing the evils of oppression/tyranny almost exclusively.
movies: casablanca, godfather, a new hope, ET, raiders of the lost ark, jurassic park, forrest gump, shawshank redemption, the sound of music, schindler's list, the lion king, gladiator, alien, the matrix, chinatown, 12 angry men, blade runner, mad max fury road, 12 years a slave, parasite, moonlight, and of course all of the film adaptations of the aforementioned movies.
literally every single one of these has criticized corrupt governments or other related systems. looking over this there's a whole lot of movies with nazi antagonists (or space nazis, looking at star wars), almost universally loved by large audiences. film as medium is usually comedy or romance or horror, but the very best of the best are about how evil humans with power are bad.
video games: skyrim, red dead redemption, ocarina, half life 2, bioshock, grand theft auto, metal gear, uncharted, resident evil, mass effect, the witcher, warcraft, god of war, dark souls, xenoblade, halo, perfect dark, metroid, baldur's gate 2, the last of us, splinter cell, diablo, and a little thing called final fantasy 7
literally every single highly rated well loved story based video game has heavily involved corrupt governments and corporations being evil. well also sometimes zombies and dragons and massively omnicidal aliens and demons... but final fantasy 7, which is most gamers 100% greatest most favorite game ever created, is LITERALLY ABOUT A RACIST CORPORATE FUNDED GOVERNMENT DESTROYING THE ENVIRONMENT FOR MONEY AND KILLING THOUSANDS OF INNOCENT PEOPLE JUST TO MAKE A QUICK BUCK. and some other stuff here and there but the main story is that shinra is committing genocide to steal access to heaven (also sephiroth wants to destroy the world but I mean it's a JRPG come on) and you are trying to stop them by blowing up their shit. gee where have I seen that before?
oh and don't even fucking get me STARTED on punk, rap, thrash, soul, classic country, blues, and other music genres expressly built from the ground up as rejections to common society and the subsequent problems involved. I'm not including post-9/11 country, pop, swing, most white boy metal, modern sad boy r&b, or other genres of, well, major privilege whether white or financial. but music, real music, true music made with passion and not a product made for $elling out, is, always has been, and forever will be, deeply rooted in seeing past what society wants you to see and hear and think and act like. and black people, black ARTISTS are pretty much at the root of all of those things. we wouldn't have anything I mentioned if not for bb king, muddy waters, blind jefferson, buddy guy, john lee hooker, and bessie smith.
we as americans have been conditioned since world war 1 ended (and even before that) and especially since the cold war was coming to a close, to recognize, acknowledge, and destroy fascism, racism, misogyny, the environmental parasites, corrupt governments, overbearing corporations, and evil in general. but only the ones who appreciate art.
if you don't read books, don't watch movies, don't play video games, don't listen to music, don't attach value to art in general... you're an idiot. you're a waste of space. you're just sitting in your cushy homes eating kale and watching livePD and talking out your ass about how you want revolution to come peacefully and only in a way you seem convenient. you're spending all of your time contributing to the corrupt system.
which is a real goddamn shame because if you benefit from that kind of privilege, so you don't have to work two or even three jobs just to give your kids breakfast you should have time to kill in enjoying art. but no. you spend all your time and money making sure that nobody else can have what you have. you waste your life so that nobody else can have one of their own. it's just disgusting.
so yeah, if you're not explicitly with the protestors, not only are you the dumbest fucking moron on the planet, but you're also against them. so at least step to the side and shut the fuck up.
