seoul city lights lit the wet cement under your feet, finding beauty in the way it reflected the buildings like a mirror. the scent of rain flooded your senses with every deep breath in, entranced with the gentle pitter-patter on the umbrella overhead.

"bin we're gonna be late!" you giggled, hugging your boyfriend tightly under the umbrella you shared, having to hold it a bit lower to his head with how much taller he was than you. you stood on your tiptoes, kissing the tip of his nose when he faced you, cold and red from the chilly breeze.

brushing your teeth together consisted of blasting music through his phone, using your toothbrush as a makeshift microphone for a solid 20 minutes before you decided it was time to actually use it for its purpose.

the city view from his apartment was the prettiest view of seoul there was; sitting at his bed in front of the large pane windows and just watching the city together, his long fingers raking through your scalp as you lay in his lap.

soobin was always slow and gentle with you, taking his time to properly warm you, give you the attention you wanted and needed.

Why These Imperfect Korean ‘Moon Jars�� Sell for Millions

Old, round, imperfect and beautiful — that’s how fans of Korean art describe the moon jar, or “dalhangari.”

These unassuming, plain white pots have entranced everyone from rapper RM, of K-pop sensation BTS, to philosopher Alain de Botton.

The former director of London’s Victoria and Albert Museum, Beth McKillop, has called the moon jar an “icon of Korean identity.” And if price is any indicator of popularity, one recently sold for over $4.5 million at a Christie’s auction.

This month, a rare example from the late 17th or early 18th century will go on sale at Sotheby’s in New York, where it’s expected to fetch more than $3 million.

“A large moon jar has always been expensive, but I think the big uptick in prices and value is… because their appeal is now global,” said Angela McAteer, Sotheby’s international head of Chinese art for the Americas and Europe, over video call. “You’ve got an international cohort of bidders competing for them, so it’s gone beyond the traditional connoisseur collecting community of Korean art.”

Huge price tags also result from the jars’ rarity. Although made for over a century in the royal kilns of Korea’s last kingdom, the Joseon dynasty, few are thought to exist today. Estimates for the number of larger ones (those more than 40 centimeters, or 15.7 inches, tall and wide) that have survived over the years range from 12 to 30.

Having passed through auction houses and antique dealers across the world, several of these are now in the collections of institutions like the British Museum and Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, as well as in the hands of private collectors.

‘Owning a piece of happiness’

The first moon jars were created in the royal kilns in Gwangju (a city just outside Seoul, not the larger southern city of the same name) from 1650 to 1750. They were made from pure white porcelain and kaolin clay, and, following the neo-Confucian fashions of their day, the pots reflected values such as propriety, humility, frugality and purity. They were likely used at court and in upper-class homes as containers for food and liquids, or as decorative vessels.

In the mid-20th century, moon jars began gaining international appreciation thanks to influential admirers such as Japanese folk crafts scholar Yanagi Soetsu and British potter Bernard Leach, who bought one from a Seoul antique store in 1935. Leach once said that having a moon jar was like “owning a piece of happiness,” and would later give his to fellow potter Lucie Rie for safekeeping during World War II. It stayed in her studio until her death and was later acquired by the British Museum.

Charlotte Horlyck, lecturer in Korean Art History at the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies, wrote in the Art Bulletin journal that after World War II the moon jar “caught the attention of an early generation of postcolonial Korean artists and scholars who sought to restore Korean art history and national identity,” as the pieces “resonated with the visual language of international modernism and minimalism of the mid-20th century while remaining a distinctly Korean work of art.”

The moon jar’s allure

When Sotheby’s announced its forthcoming sale, the auction house described its 44-centimeter (17.3-inch) moon jar as an object that inspired, astounded and soothed those who “stand in its presence.” It’s a funny thing to say about a pot, to speak as if it’s alive, but the jars’ visceral, emotional impact on people is something that comes up time and time again in the literature.

Choi Sunu, a former director of the National Museum of Korea, has described the museum’s moon jars as being like companions, or muses that have inspired his writing and stirred his creativity. Bernard Leach admired the pots for their “natural unselfconsciousness.” In 2012, South Korea’s then-Unification Minister Yu Woo-ik used the pot as a metaphor symbolizing a reunified Korean peninsula (moon jars are created in two hemispherical pieces and joined in the middle).

More recently the rapper RM, of K-pop group BTS, posted a picture of himself hugging a modern-day moon jar on Twitter, telling fans that the pots made him feel calm.

“It’s hard for someone to really comprehend how a pot can make you feel that way,” said McAteer. “It has this real meditative presence. If you’ve sat in front of a great (painting by US artist, Mark) Rothko and you feel this kind of palpable energy emanate from it, and you could sit for hours and just feel something in its presence — the moon jar has that too.”

“The more you look at it, the more there is to see. It looks different from every angle,” she added. “We had real issues with the photography and the catalog because it looks like a different piece every time you rotate it, or you change the lighting. The surface is just alive, you know.”

“You can see how the glaze coalesces; you see these spontaneous bursts of this blush color that’s happening in the firing. You can lose yourself in its surface.”

Modern masters

Modern Korean potters have been inspired by the jars, and a number have come up with their own homages. Ceramist Kim Syyong covers his pots with a black glaze, while Yun Ju Cheol’s versions look spikier like a pufferfish and Choi Bo Ram’s unvarnished, textured blue vases have a denim-like quality.

Others, like Kwon Dae Sup, have looked to closely recreate the process used by the potters of yore. The 71-year-old ceramist produces unadorned white jars and allows for all the beautiful imperfections produced to shine through. He works out of a studio in Gwangju, where the royal kilns that produced moon jars were once located.

There’s a great deal of preparation that goes into making a moon jar traditionally. It’s labor-intensive: washing, sifting impurities from the clay, kneading and rolling it to remove air bubbles, carrying around these large hunks, not to mention hand throwing the clay itself to that oversized bowl shape without collapsing, and the work keeping a pine wood fire burning for 24 hours while the pot hardens in the kiln. Kwon also built his own kiln to replicate the old process as closely as possible.

“I do this because it’s fun,” he said in a phone interview. “Every time I make something, it’s novel … The quality of the material is different every time. The conditions in which I make the pots is new every time.”

Kwon said he also feels an emotional connection to the moon jar. As a student he was so moved by a one he saw in a Korean antique store that he decided they would be his life’s work. “They feel alive,” he said.

In a 2019 book on his work by Axel Vervoodt Gallery the potter is quoted saying he tries to produce art that needs no addition or subtraction. “I wish to create work that has an imposing presence but harmonizes with its surroundings regardless of where and when it is displayed. It should give peace of mind and a sense of comfort to all who look at it.”

The MV was filmed by a local team in Romania in Buftea (src). You can find more details about the production in this video from Euronews Romania (4:08 to 4:47). The MV also won the "craft : cinematography" prize at the 2024 Berlin Commercial Awards.

The show

The name is in reference to all the American evening TV shows, like The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon which is probably the inspiration for the title The Lost! Show starring RM.

The text on the hosts' mugs says 남준 한에 (inside Namjoon, src).

The stage, also featured in the Poster, is a labyrinth with no connected exits. You go in and out through the same opening.

In this setting, RM appears disguised as the only two women we see: the anchor and the director.

During the climbing scene, we see what's below the show stage. There are carton boxes and two trophies on the left, while it's suitcases and an abacus on the right.

The elevator

From this point, RM is accompanied by four personas (src): an overconfident one (played by Audrey Kang), an anxious one (played by Hee Sin (second Instagram post)), a jaded one (played by Stephany Yujin Hong (second Instagram post)) and a goofy one (played by David H Lee).

The elevator has lots of details, notably graffiti:

Another day/week/hour of accumulating thoughts which haven't marinated enough.

That Zzinu guy (I can't remember his actual name) is really hanging out with everyone relevant in the industry, he's everywhere 👀 I saw him with RM on IG and at some concert, had no idea they were buddies.

Why did Jungkook come back just for a few days? What was that damn urgent to fly to Seoul only to go back to US in no time? I thought someone would enlist, but nope.

I took the bus downtown twice today instead of calling for a car. I have to stop being delusional and accept that I'm not rich.

I'm not gonna write a review of Tedros' album cause I don't feel there's a point, but I do have like a few things to say. Why is it being talked about like he started working on Layover 3 years ago? I mean, he started working on music, yes, but this thing that came out? That's like some team who probably put together the music a lot more recently. But hey, I'm just babbling so what the fuck do I know? Slow Dancing sounds good. I mean, nice enough to have it in the background in a playlist. All the songs feel too short, like they're some samples and they just decided to release them that way. Since his contribution was mostly singing the actual songs, it feels like he gave Min Hee Jin a pinterest board of who is Taehyung and from that entire thing, she created the Kim Taehyung artiste aesthetic. It's her vibe all over it. Just as it's her entire shtick all over NewJeans. It screams more MHJ than the actual idols.

I tried so hard in the past 30 min to stop myself from being bitchy, but I can't help it. To those who think that they got out of the jikook cult and now they're smarter and feel the need to still use the tag to post their bullshit? Wake up, you're still in a cult, you just switched to another. Absolutely pathetic. I wish I could fuck with pjms cause I admire the way they stand up for Jimin and they're like the most organized fanbase. But the moment they started using cult/tkkr narative and making Jimin sound like a puppet, I just knew they're not better. And a sign that I cannot affiliate myself to any group in this fandom, I'm riding on my own like I always have.

You know what's ironic though? Jikookers are basically the only ship fandom within bts who since the beginning and especially in the latest years, should have just sat back and relax cause they're so damn privileged. No other pair in bts is giving what dumb and dumber (I call them that with all my love) are doing together, but there's not a day in which I don't see stupid anons or jikookers fighting and bringing arguments. Waste of time!

And in that vein, pjms would only have to learn from their god damn classy bias who is no doormat and act accordingly. Fight for him without acting so damn stupid. In terms of artistry, he's the best out there out of this group and others in his generation. Isn't that fucking cool? And look at his behavior. Let army and kpop stans get frustrated thanks to Jimin's achievements and how you can contribute to that, not using the same foul language which only trashy stans are using. Do better ffs. Fix that attitude. And stop believing you know Jimin's brain and soul inside out. No one does. It only makes you sound like any other delusional kpop stan.

Key's Good & Great is out. I only had time to watch the mv once during actual work hours (fitting) and I can't get into anh details, but I liked the idea of workaholism tied to a simulation. There's tons of layers and stuff to be analyzed there, perhaps some other time.

It seems like the stage moment when JK said, “I love you,” to JM wasn’t as big a deal to everyone as I thought it was?! I mean that was it for me! He said it!! No more questions asked! How come there actually ARE still so many denials? That sealed the deal for me. And he actually outed himself! Right?!

Yeah, like most of JK says people seem to overlook, ignore, misunderstand, misplace, mistranslate or any other kind of mis you can think of, especially when it has to do with JM.

Btw, this was back in April 2022, after their supposed breakup coming back from LA 2021. When from Dec 2021 through to March 2022 (the Seoul concerts) there was no sign of life from them together, no sightings, no sm contact. You know, the usual shit people use to claim they are done, distanced, finished with each other, only to be disproved time and time again.

Anyway, back to JK and his "Love you"... JK in LV was wild, wild in love with JM that is. A clear continuation to his behaviour in the Seoul concerts but even more, louder.

I kind of think he got a bit of a talk to after, lol. I mean, even JM was giving him the "you've gone too far" look (not to mention RM's nerves were shattered) after that finger heart stunt. If not for those two and their reactions, I wouldn't have even thought it to be a big deal, but must have been the straw for them, or perhaps JK giving a rat's ass after already having the talk to, who knows, lol.

But look, if sucking on JM's ear or caressing the hickey JM left on his neck or telling people to stay jealous cause he's going to keep holding JM, or doing whatever they were doing during the last Seoul concerts in October 2019, or having JM's name tattooed on his hand, didn't even make a dent in these people's y/n fantasies, you think him saying "love you" to JM would?

I think i gotta thanks jungkook cause i have read some ppl say they thought that jm and jk are not even close nd kinda dislike e/o especially jk cause that's what many comments says but then they had watched his lives Especially the one he did watching jm's content that made them wonder that it doens't look like he dislikes jm, then the half naked live on his bed Where he's asking jm to come over or he'll go to jm's home if jm says yes.

Sometimes they tell but most times they don't. Like taehyung loves sharing all his outings on his insta like he does that with wooga as well so we know, plus he used to go live saying he called jk, this that so we know they have also spent time together in chapt2. But with jikook it's hard to tell although i completely believe they haven't met e/o as much as they used to in the past as their time never matched. I remember jm-hobi going to jk's home for his b'day in 2022 nd jk was live nd jin asked who were the Members that met him nd apart from jin who went there to give grapes to jk (from Jin's uncle's farm ig) only hobi nd jm went as usual cause jm-hobi always celebrate jk's b'day together and later after jk's b'day past 12 jm posted a pic nd the pic was from jk's home but jm posted the zoomed pic that if we didn't already know jm was there we wouldn't know it's from jk's home lol. Most of their outings over the yrs has been fans spotting them and never them posting those pics. They don't usually post. and it's not like they haven't seen e/o at all cause they did often but it's mostly with other members ig nd they didn't get enough time for just the two. Plus their"it's been a while" can never be measured accurately cause they love role playing, i remember jk saying"it's been a while" when he went to jm's home when they were together just 2-3 hrs before on stage cause that was last day of Seoul concert. Jk did say that they planned to go out for drinks but it didn't happen cause of jm's schedule. so it's about spending time together just the two of them as they're used to. im glad jm took initiative to go to NYC nd do all that after all times jk asked him to come over on those lives 😂

So i get why ppl would think that way but thinking they don't like e/o beacuse the Fandom portrays that way is really sad nd that's one thing i have always said that the Fandom never talks about jikook together the way they do for others like every now nd then there's always threads for all pairs of jikook like jinkook bickering, Taekook partners in crime, vmin-sope soulmates etc etc but there's hardly anyone talks about jikook's bond that's why new ppl who join the Fandom think they're not even that close or dislike e/o. Fandom will always talk about jk changing the colours in gcf Helsinki (do you know what's gcf? let me know) but won't talk about that in same gcf jk changed colour for jm too. won't talk about gcf osaka he stopped music just to let ppl listen jm's laugh, in another one he did same for jin-jm. won't talk about a whole ass gcf Tokyo that's fully on jm. you'll see them talk about that colour change jk did for RM every month but there's never mention of gcf Tokyo. Won't talk about how jk did a whole live watching jm's content had it been any other member jk did that for they would never shut up especially RM nd tae. Like there's soooo many things like that they brush it off because it's jikook but if it had been other members they would not shut up about it.

That's why when ppl say that comapny uses Jikook for money i always ask why would they use a duo that's not even fandom's fav? like yes jkk is 2nd biggest ship of BTS but the difference in numbers of Tkkrs nd jkkrs is wayyy too big. of course there's true armys who loves all pairs so they love jikook too but when the Fandom is majorly infested with Tkkrs it's hard. If someone find jkk then it's on their own. I'm glad you atleast got to see their beautiful bond, shipping is never a priority but appreciating bonds is so I'm glad you think they're close friends.

No apologies, I read all of it haha. But yeah when I first became a fan, I would see the wildest things about JM, to the point that some of it even influenced me in the beginning just by how wide spread and accepted it seemed to be. For example that he was always invading JK's personal space against his wishes, but I came to realize luckily that they would use deceptive edits that were made to look a certain way. Not sure, but I think I've only seen the first GCF, because that is the one that they mentioned in the promo they did in the lead up to Are You SURE, at that one seemed to mean the most to them.

A lot of people thought that Jimin and Jungkook were not spending any time together, but in hindsight it feels pretty evident to me now that they were hanging out, we just didn't know about it (which duh lol). Jimin said to RM that him and JK have deep conversations about music for hours, to the point they even left Suga by himself one time lol. And again the fact that JK's mom brought up JM twice in that short conversation, means that there is a deep connection there as well. Not to mention they were planning to enlist together and filming a reality show together. So, it's nice to know that all the people who said they weren't close anymore or that didn't see each other were probably wrong.
