keith in ur header looks so ominous, is it an au?
It is! I first drew that when planning a sheith longfic that I started two years ago, but I set it aside for a bit of a rewrite as my plot ideas got bigger. And then even bigger. 👀 I haven't returned to it yet but it's still percolating.
It's a dystopian AU where sentinels and guides are taken from their families and trained in military academies to be future pilots in an unending war. Keith has seen what Coalition forces are really doing to people on the border worlds—making mindless drones out of all those who oppose them—just like they did to his father.
Keith and Shiro are both unusually gifted as sentinel and guide respectively, so they're matched from a young age. Try as he might, Keith can't bring himself to hate Shiro. Hell, by the time they both come of age, he can't help but love Shiro, but neither can Keith forget what those soldiers did to his family.
Keith keeps his thoughts carefully guarded, painful as it is, leaving Shiro in the dark about his plans. It's for his own safety. Keith throws his sentinel activation trials on purpose, hiding the truth of his abilities, so that he'll be sent away from the academy. Only then can he strike out on his own and find out where they're holding his father. The plan will cost him Shiro, sabotaging everything they have and their future happiness together, but it's his father. He has no choice.
Of course, nothing goes according to plan.
When the war slams them back together years later, Keith doesn’t believe in second chances, just his own abysmal luck. He thought leaving would protect Shiro, but what if he was wrong from the start? What if his ‘choice’ was no choice at all, and it steered them both right into a trap engineered by a mastermind who knew Keith's secret all along?
There’s nothing Keith can do to change the past, but deep down he knows he’ll never let Shiro down again, no matter what it costs him.
Featuring:
slowburn estranged childhood friends to lovers, broken betrothal, second chances, sensory overload feels, empathic bonds, subverted soulmate tropes (but still very much sheith inventing love), prickly keith who pretends not to care about anyone but himself but is actually the most devoted friend in the whole universe (so, canon??), actual sheith conflict, loads of tension, not just the sexual kind, actual plot, weird alien ships that can only be operated by sentinel/guide pairs, weird world building, space opera vibes, the Coalition is basically every "evil empire" trope ever but under the guise of being the good guys, the enemy is a scrappy band of freedom fighters incl. Krolia and other BOM members, also the Holts are very important in this one incl. bigtime keith & pidge friendship, seriously they are kind of gremlin besties and I love writing those parts.
In other words, the story I have in my mind for this could fill a whole fucking trilogy but I just have to have to make time if I’m going to actually do that. 😂
And of course I have that one friend who thinks it’d be better if I made OCs and wrote original fiction, but idk. This WHOLE STORY stemmed from one simple what-if that I cannot separate from sheith? Like, I can’t. I wouldn’t know how.
My original thought was:
Keith would burn the whole world down for Shiro. I really believe that. So what would it take, what circumstances would be required, for Keith to burn down everything he has with Shiro in pursuit of something else? What else would he never give up on?
What would it take for him to believe he couldn’t do what he needs to do with Shiro? What would force Shiro to watch him go, knowing he can’t follow?
And what would it take for them to fix everything that was broken between them?

Well, now I'm curious how you would mix our Soulmate au with FoF. Because I can definitely see Branch play mute (except Keith) with everyone, especially to his soulmate who was the very persistent Princess he has an attraction to. But when he wears his costume, he conveniently says Poppy's words that say "Run away!" and so now has to deal with a love struck princess persistent on having her happily ever after with her soulmate while trying to figure out who he is under the mask.
Oh that would be a fun au.
Branch would have no choice but to scream to Poppy during the wolf attack, and after Branch flees Poppy chalks up him having a bad reaction to his soulmate encounter. If she's already feral in FOF, she's savage in a soulmate situation. She'd probably push him harder to get him to sing since soulmates always did duets with each other. Peppy gets involved too, after all the troll who just saved the village will be the next king, he wants to get to know his son-in-law, since he sees a troll who would be able to protect everyone, where he failed.
Branch would still have to pretend he's mute out of costume, which is really annoying when Poppy grips about how if her soulmate was at the party none of the attack would've happen. He would not have taken on a bergen on his own. that's a deathwish.
The journey to bergen town is a lot more awkward since Poppy would stop talking about wedding plans, and when Branch tries to interject saying he's not ready for that, she goes on about engagement parties. She doesn't really start listening to him until he loses it at Bridget and says he lost all his family to bergens.
"Is it true, what you said back there?"
"You're lucky you can't remember Poppy, because you can't ever forget."
The moment Poppy would pull that mask off of Branch after teh chef wounds him, is the worst feeling. This man who was always there, a quiet sentinel that protected her, had been mortal wounded protecting her. for the next weeks she stays by his bedside, and her eyes are always on her mark, fearing the words going black with his death.
"I don't care if you sing or not, I don't even care if you talk. Just please wake up."

Voltron Sucks
I know it’s not exactly groundbreaking to say that Voltron is a bad show, but I thought I’d put my thoughts out there.
The thing about Voltron is that all the ingredients of a good show are there. You’ve got an evil Empire with a distinct design, giant Lion mechs that are sentient, interesting and distinct characters, immediate plot hooks for Shiro, Keith, and Pidge, cool space magic, and more. And that’s just the very beginning of the first season. There were so many things that worked in Voltron, they just...failed to use them effectively.
There are many, MANY issues in Voltron (the queerbaiting, the monster of the week filler, the nonsense deus ex machinas), but I wanted to touch on some of the ones I found most annoying.
#1: Allura should have been the leader of Voltron after Shiro. I don’t know what the writers were thinking to have Shiro want Keith to take over leading after him, because all of Season 2 shows Keith to be a hotheaded loner, and then later on in the show he literally ditches the team to go be a member of the Blade of Marmora (yeah Keith, becoming a rebel/saboteur is a much better use of your time than being the leader of Voltron). Allura is a leader, she was a leader during the entire show, and she frankly deserved to pilot the Black Lion.
Also, it’s a tiny thing, but the Paladin’s Armour color should always match their Lions. Having Blue Armour in the Red Lion, Red Armour in the Black Lion, and Pink Armour in the Blue Lion made me want to tear my hair out.
#2: Hunk should have been treated better by the narrative. The poor dude barely got any serious moments in the entire series, and easily 20% of his screentime is devoted to jokes about how he’s a coward with a weak stomach. Hunk is the second or third most capable engineer among the Paladins, he’s a great cook, he’s dependable, trustworthy, and has a strong moral code. I wish we had gotten to see more of that Hunk.
#3: Voltron itself really should have been stronger. A lot stronger. This is supposed to be the Defender of the Universe, a nigh invincible mystic sentinel against evil, and it gets knocked around and “nearly defeated” practically every other fight.
Things that challenge Voltron physically should have been saved for very important fights against well established threats (Zarkon, Lotor, etc). By having Voltron get knocked about and damaged as often as it is, it has the opposite effect to what was probably intended; we all know Voltron isn’t going to be destroyed, because every other time before now they pulled through just fine.
#4: The Castle of Lions is too empty. This is partially a complaint about the fact that the CoL is the size of a Star Destroyer and yet has a crew of less than a dozen people, but that’s just a nitpick.
My real issue is how Voltron is so isolated from the rest of the galaxy. They come in, save the day, and then leave. They eventually coordinate a rebellion Coalition, but that group operates outside of the CoL in their own ships on their own planets, and it’s such a missed opportunity. You have a ridiculous amount of space on the CoL, why not take on a couple dozen alien allies? We see hints of this in S8, with the Atlas; Voltron now has allies to help coordinate, wings of fighters that can handle less important tasks, intelligence gatherers, maintenance engineers, and more. Just do that, but earlier, and with aliens!
That’s all I’ve got for right now. God, imagine if the She-Ra crew had written Voltron, we might’ve actually gotten a good show.
(Pidge is the best character in the show and the single amazing episode in the show is about Pidge.)

With that said I do believe there have been instances in which I and my friends have engaged in some rather ugly fandom. My online persona first arose in the late 90s/early 00's during the heyday of Television Without Pity, an now mostly extinct fanfiction sub-genre called MSTings, and the writings of the late Chris Hyatte For those who don't remember him I consider Hyatt one of the internet’s great cautionary tales. During the waning days of the wrestling boom fans call “The Monday Night War” Hyatte was a genuine rock star of what we called The Internet Wrestling Community. (Now we just call them wrestling fans.) His fly by the seat of his pants style was truly hilarious and paved the way for a generation of wrestling writers. Alas Hyatt proved to be his own worst enemy as the guy had no off switch. His tendency at lashing out at wrestling personalities (most notably former WCW and current AEW commentator Tony Shiavone) and other fans like fellow Scott Keith resulted in him flaming out quickly. He was granted chance after chance burning bridges every time. At the time of his death in 2020 he had about 440 followers on Twitter which is two less than I have now. I was one of the last people to follow him in any capacity.
In that environment started writing comic reviews for Comics Nexus and Spider-Fan. I attained a great bit of a following for my reviews of Daniel Way's Venom, a book that I still consider one of the all-time hilariously bad comics of the era. Years later I met Daniel Way at a comic convention after he had largely redeemed his reputation with a successful run on Deadpool. As a young writer Way was in a position by Marvel management where almost ANY writer was doomed to fail. Basically Marvel signed him to write a new Venom comic only to be informed he couldn't use Eddie Brock. Way set out to write a horror comic inspired by The Thing only to be informed that it was going to be part of a PG-rated comics line aimed at Manga readers. When the series became the highest selling book in the fledgling Tsunami line by sheer virtue of being the first solo Venom comic released in several years Marvel asked him to shoehorn Wolverine (and subsequent guest stars) into the story at which point Way was like “sure why not.”
Flash forward a decade later. Once again “angry reviewers” are in vogue as The Nostalgia Critic is at peak popularity as is Red Letter Media's Mr. Plinkett character. Even CinemaSins hadn't devolved into the complete clickbait that it is today. Marvel comics debuts a book called Avengers Arena which teenage heroes from several previous books: Avengers Academy, Sentinel, and Runaways were first to duel to the death by Arcade who very abruptly went from Marvel's most fun villains to least fun villains. It was a shameless Hunger Games cash-in that was one of the most thoroughly unpleasant comics I've ever read. I started blogging on Tumblr as a way of venting and it brought me a bit of catharsis.
However with a decade of hindsight I realize that I was probably too hard on writer Dennis Hopeless. Remember Hopeless’ original pitch for the book was a new version of Excalibur consisting of teenagers mentored by Captain Britain. It simply wasn't the book he had wanted to write but the book Marvel editorial wanted. He was in a lose/lose situation. It was only a run on Spider-Woman that was generally well regarded and a WWE tie-in Comic that was much better than the actual WWE television product that I really appreciated how talented he was. Like Way before him he was just a guy doing a job in a lose-lose situation.
I stopped doing my “Worst Comics of the 2010s'' series around the time that Marvel's Secret Empire event came out. The story was largely the victim of terrible and I mean TERRIBLE timing. The people involved didn’t predict the rise of Donald Trump and just how quickly everything would go to shit. In 2015 “dude what if Captain America was like the absolute worst” villain must have seemed like a can't miss idea. In 2016 it was a heart-breaking reminder of the country's wounded psyche and in its promotion of the event Marvel basically left writer Nick Spencer to be hung out to dry. While I find Spencer's body of work to be staggeringly uneven, he was ultimately just another work for hire talent in over his head. With the benefit of hindsight I would have handled things a lot differently.
With years of hindsight I probably would have voiced my views differently. It's tempting to blame the current abysmal state of comics discussion on the endless cycle of corporate reboots and gimmicks or reprehensible movements like “Comics Gate” but the roots are much deeper. In fact in some ways it might have been worse. Over on his blog Mark Evanier talked about how Mark Robbins became one of the most controversial Batman artists of his day simply because he didn't draw like Neal Adams. As hard as it might be to believe there was a generation of comics fans who called Jack Kirby “Jack the Hack” because they didn't like his later works like Machine Man and The Eternals. Then you have the whole sad backlash to Ron Marz and the H.E.A.T fan movement.
It is too tempting to write creators off without looking at their whole body of work. Steve Englehart is simultaneously one of the most important comic creators of his era AND the writer of the hilariously clueless New Guardians. I dislike many of the comics Brian Michael Bendis has written but I respect the importance of Ultimate Spider-Man and still look back fondly on his Daredevil run. Howard Mackie who became fandom's shorthand for “Hack” because of his Spider-Man runs recently made a comeback of sorts for Marvel on a Danny Ketch: Ghost Rider-Mini series and having read the first two issues it's a lot of fun! I'm rooting for him.
I want people to know that I am monitoring the situation closely. I understand the concern but I also do not want to cut anyone off unless I absolutely have to. I am content to focus on my own conduct before pointing at others. For now I simply ask fans to treat comic creators like human beings and wish to lead by example. I'm not against a little well placed anger or even a tiny bit mean-spirited humor but I'm just going to be more careful in how I wield it. I haven't written much about comics as of late due to my work/life schedule BUT when I get around to it I'm going to try to be a lot more respectful in my own writing. I simply ask others to do the same.

The working title of this project is Giant Robot Poems: Poetry About Mecha-Human Science, Culture & War. Editors of the project write: Our intent with this project is to have fun, but also to illuminate, interrogate, and challenge (via the still-human domain of poetry!!!) the ways people think about emerging and future technologies such as robots and drones, Artificial Intelligence (AI), cybernetic enhancements, etc. We are looking for terrain-shifting, mind's-eye-bending, firmament-rending expressions of new and future realities. Be provocative. Be poignant. Be human. Even if you write like a Giant Robot. Ideally, many of the works submitted will engage such questions as: How does technology potentially change human behavior / culture / society? How does technology potentially change human behavior ethics / values? How does technology potentially change the ways humans fight / love / think / feel? Many examples of "Giant Robot-ness" exist in today's news and culture. As a starting point or prompt, our editors offer a list of examples and inspirations. 42,000+ Acres added to Florida Wildlife Corridor by Florida Cabinet
The Florida Cabinet has unanimously approved the protection of six (6) properties totaling 42,409 acres of wilderness and working lands within the Florida Wildlife Corridor. Today’s approvals underscore the unwavering commitment of our state leadership to protect Florida’s natural environment for generations to come. All the properties approved for acquisition or conservation easement during the September 18, 2023, Cabinet meeting were made possible through collaboration from public and private funds, such as Trust for Public Lands, Tall Timbers, Florida Conservation Group, Archbold Biological Station, and Keith Fountain Law, and through the state’s Rural and Family Lands Protection and the Florida Forever Programs. By working together, these groups have ensured the protection of critical habitats within ecologically vital regions. “The Corridor Foundation deeply appreciates the visionary leadership of FDEP and FDACS that has stood alongside all of the partners working to permanently protect and connect the Florida Wildlife Corridor,” said Florida Wildlife Corridor Foundation CEO Mallory Dimmitt. “Their continued support amplifies our collective efforts and while we celebrate these achievements, we also acknowledge that the work is far from over and it will take continued collaboration, increased funding, and an accelerated pace of projects to meet the ever-pressing need to keep the Corridor Connected.” Most of the lands are working agricultural lands that provide habitat and connectivity for key species including the indigo snake, Florida black bear, Florida panther, Snail Kite, and more. These protected lands fall within Jefferson, Leon, Santa Rosa, Hendry, Collier, Osceola, and Highlands counties. Why is this Information in NatureCoaster? Although we cover information for Citrus, Hernando and Pasco Counties, the three southernmost counties of Florida's designated Nature Coast, we recognize that creating and connecting the Florida Wildlife Corridor is important to maintaining the natural spaces that make our area so special. NatureCoaster.com will cover victories throughout Florida, whether included in our region or not because it is all part of an important goal to connect wild lands throughout our State. This report does not include any lands in Pasco, Hernanod, or Citrus Counties, but we are an important part of the Florida Wildlife Corridor. We hope you will take the time to get to know the Florida Wildlife Corridor Foundation, which works to spearhead and champion connecting our wild lands before they cannot be connected anymore. The project will protect the water quality and quantity of the St. Marks River and the associated natural springs and karst features found within the Upper St. Marks River Basin. The project will also allow for the expansion of public resource-based recreational opportunities and support the continuation of sustainably managed silviculture practices. Acquisition of approximately 17,229 acres within the Devil’s Garden Florida Forever project from Alico, Inc. Named after a wetland slough in the eastern portion of the overall project, the property is comprised of a mosaic of natural lands used primarily for cattle grazing. The connectivity of uplands and wetlands, draining both to the north and south, is important to protecting the State’s water resources. The landscape connection with other conservation lands, including federal ownership, ensures longevity for a wide range of species, including the Florida panther, and provides opportunities for wetland and watershed protections. A conservation easement over approximately 8,881.74 acres within the Adams Ranch project of the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ (FDACS) Rural and Family Lands Protection Program (RFLPP) from Adams Ranch, Inc.
