Actually, this deserves its own post because the way Abbott Elementary handled Melissa's character in this episode is genuinely some of the best dyslexia representation I have ever seen on TV.
She's not a little kid who overcomes her disability as an adult. Her dyslexia doesn't give her superpowers (weirdly common trope). She isn't portrayed as stupid by the show or the other characters because of it. She's a competent adult who has developed coping mechanisms to deal with her disability and is still shown to struggle sometimes despite that! Oh my god is that refreshing!
Also, Melissa being competitive about the reading challenge and Barbra's comment about how good she is at engaging kids in reading is totally recontextualized by the reveal that she has a learning disability and especially the reveal that she was probably teased for her LD as a kid (which I'm also so happy that they brought up - I don't think most people realize how competitive elementary schools tend to make reading, and how shitty and ostracizing that can be for kids who struggle with it). Winning the book challenge is important to her because it's something she used to really struggle with. She's good at getting kids to read because she can relate to their challenges in a personal way. They directly tie her LD to her strengths as a teacher without it being fantastical or over-emphasized and I can't even begin to tell you how much I love it!
The bit at the end where she says "you know how sometimes I have to read things a few times" to Janine, in the break room with no students present is also a great scene because it shows her LD in an adult, professional context. It's a conversation that I, and every dyslexic person I know, has had with their co-workers at some point. I just love that they make a point of normalizing her LD in an adult workplace setting that's separate from the classroom and away from the kids.
This season has done an awesome job talking about disability generally but the choice to give not just a student, but one of the teachers an LD was an absolutely perfect move. I really hope this gets brought up in later episodes and isn't just a one-off.
#abbott elementary#melissa schemmenti#dyslexia#disability representation#Quinta must have taken the time to higher and work with a sensitivity reader for this episode and bless her for it#I truly expect so little from dyslexia rep at this point#it was amazing to see it handled so well here

Whumpee losing their voice to screaming, unable to answer Whumper or beg them to stop. The only sounds they can make now are quiet gasps and high, broken whimpers.
#in honor of me losing my voice over the last several days#I happened to get sick at the same time#so for anyone who needs a reference: all I could do was whisper—and even that took effort and a little pain#it hurt so badly to swallow that I had to brace myself before doing it and I would still wince#sensitive skin around the neck but especially the sides of the throat where there was the most swelling (being choked would not be fun)#it’s taken three days for my voice to come back enough to speak at a regular volume#but I’m still stuck in the lower registers of my voice#for anyone whose Whumpee has lost their voice#hope this helps!#whump

Crosshair is fuckin selfish, he knew how to get to Tantiss THE WHOLE TIME, but withholds it because of “trauma”, which is an awful excuse, he reveals that he knows how he their once OMEGA gets captured, showing that he only cares about his squad, not his other brothers, he could have told Echo all about Rampart, and Echo, Rex, Gregor, and Howzer could have ran the entire mission to get Rampart and get to Tantiss earlier
Crosshair never changed, he is still the selfish bully that was introduced to us on Anaxes
While I respect your opinion, I disagree with your take that Crosshair has never changed. He is a very complicated character who has been through a lot. And he has changed. He has learned that loyalty belongs to those who will reciprocate it and treat him with respect.
To your point about him not saying anything do to trauma, I argue that it isn't an awful excuse. The mind is a truly powerful thing and when you are in constant survival mode, you will do things that others will raise eyebrows at. Crosshair DOES NOT want to go back at any cost. He was badly hurt physically and psychologically. From his perspective, withholding information will protect both himself and his squad from going back there. As someone who has pretty bad anxiety at times, I sympathize with him. I don't say that lightly.
To your point about Omega, yes he only really goes back for her. Omega is the one person throughout the entire show who always tried to understand him. Crosshair is a character driven by his loyalty to others, especially his brothers and Omega. When the person who is the literal light of his life gets taken, it makes sense that goes back for her.
To your point about him being selfish, I do think he is. His one and true loyalty will always be to his squad. But that doesn't mean he hasn't learned to work alongside his fellow brothers. He literally risked his life to save Mayday. And I firmly don't believe that S3 Crosshair would say "he's just another reg." He's grown from that. You're right that he could've just told Echo and Rex and leave the rest to them. But at the same time, I think it's worth looking at things from his perspective. He wants to avoid Tantiss and anything to do with it. If that means not saying a peep, then that's what he'll do.
At the end of the day, Crosshair is a very nuanced character. Is he selfish? Yes. But I don't think it's fair to say that he has never changed. He has come a long way since we first met him on Anaxes.
#star wars#the bad batch#tbb crosshair#tbb meta#crosshair is very nuanced#while i do think he can be very selfish at times#s1 ep15 is a great example of that#i dont think it's fair to say that he's never changed#he has#there's a lot going on inside his head#crosshair is surprisingly sensitive and internalizes a lot of what he hears around him#he's loyal and will do anything for those he cares about it#and if any of his brothers were taken to tantiss#i do believe he would've gone back for them as well#he does care#you can't look me in the eye and say that the crosshair who dragged Mayday through all that snow and ice is the exact same crosshair from C#he has grown so much

We're learning about grouse hunting together!
I was really undecided on whether I wanted to hunt with Rory for realsies because I don't have a shotgun and I don't really care to get a shotgun (I have a gun license from my time up north). I have a small air rifle and a tactical slingshot (both legal for hunting small game in my area) so I've been taking those for walks in hunting areas, along with all my permits and stuff, just to see what we see.
This grouse woods is in the same corner as my swamp, just a different part of the rec area. You can legally hunt small game during the open season with dogs with some restrictions (certain distance from the parking, some trails close for hunting on a rotational basis for maintenance, etc.) but it's not terribly popular so it's a really good area to learn. We are looking for ruffed grouse and rabbit, both of which are super common out here.
With pointing dogs like britts, you generally don't want to shoot any game unless they're pointing steady (*except when doing gun conditioning, but that's a specific training set up) - it makes sense because a shot bird is the ultimate reward and you want to make sure you're reinforcing the behaviour you want, which is usually a safe steady point. Rory isn't pointing steady yet so there's really not much for me to do on these walks besides reinforce good manners (recall, how far she ranges, etc.).
There's a really well known saying in pointing dogs, which is wild birds make bird dogs. Wild birds flush (fly away) much more reliably than farmed birds so the chances of a dog catching a wild bird is really minimal compared to farmed birds. It's super important to get young bird dogs on wild birds as much as possible so they learn all the important skills: how to navigate terrain, what habitat holds birds, what each bird species smells like, how far they can range, and most importantly, that they need a person to actually get a bird.
(Most of these skills can be taught with planted birds in training, but planted birds may be more habituated to people and dogs so they might not flush reliably. Once pointing dogs learn that they can catch birds themselves, it's much harder to foster a strong stop and point. You might see people using these tip ups, which protect the training bird from the dog. You'll often see training dogs on long lines (called check cords) or with a flank collar to reinforce not getting too close to the bird, but you have to phase those out quickly so the dog doesn't become dependent on them. You also have to be really careful with scent trails when setting up planted birds or you might end up with a dog that follows your scent instead of looking for birds organically. And of course, you have to train without birds sometimes so the dog doesn't get discouraged about not finding birds quickly because sometimes there just aren't birds out there. Lots to consider when setting up training!)
Anyway I've been trying to get Rory out on wild birds as much as possible (with the caveat that we don't run wild birds during nesting season) so we're wandering the grouse woods lately. My early recall training is really paying off because she's been super reliable in terms of good manners, it's wonderful to see!
We've been out four times (1-2 hours each) so far since the season opened. The first two times we're mostly just a pleasant walk in the woods, Rory didn't really know what we were doing so she was just vibing (THIS IS TOTALLY FINE, SHE'S NEW TO THIS). We had a couple chance grouse encounters and I could see the wheels turning, I encouraged her to sniff around where the grouse were sitting before they flew off and I watched her start to connect the dots.
(It's important to remember that dogs don't know what they're looking for until you show them. Most bird dogs are naturally birdy, but they don't know which birds are good and which birds are boring! You have to show them which birds you care about - this is easiest if you can run with an experienced hunting dog, but you can do it alone like I am by making a big deal about any interest in the "correct" birds.)
The last time we went out to the grouse woods, she did a couple of really nice whip-arounds when she caught scent she liked and followed scent off the trail I was walking! This is the behaviour I want to see so it was awesome to watch it start to click! She trailed a moose (don't want that, she found some moose pee to roll in so whatever), a pileated woodpecker (again, don't want that but it was cool to see), and two separate grouse. The first was on the wrong side of the fence so I couldn't do anything about it but she held a really nice point (the photo) and I gave her a ton of chicken and praise for it. The second was a quick point but it flushed really far away so there was no finding it again. Both birds weren't visible when she found them, they were true scent points and she was strategically looking for them so that was super cool!
She's still in heat and super sensitive right now so I wouldn't shoot over her anyway, but I'm getting pretty accurate with my slingshot so I'm hoping we can connect on something this fall - both for her pointing steady and me aiming properly. She gets more steady and more sure of herself every time we go out so it's only a matter of time!
#rory borealis#about aurora#bird dog training#dogblr#this is a long one!#its pretty rambly about my thoughts about grouse hunting training so far#one real issue im having right now is how gear-sensitive rory is#she will happily wear a regular collar (or an ecollar - shes conditioned to wearing it but i dont use it on her yet)#but i cant put a bell or a belly protector on her without her freaking out#it makes her super shut down and upsetti and it sucks#ultimately its not a big deal because she ranges appropriately and i can have eyeballs on her at all times#but i would like her to wear an orange belly protector for these kinds of outings because its hard on her body#i have to revisit gear desensitization once shes done her heat#ive never had a dog that was this avoidant of gear tbh#on the note about gear:#rory has exceptional recall especially for a young bird dog#you'll notice im running her naked without an ecollar or gps collar#if youre following along and want to train your dog for grouse hunting PLEASE use appropriate gear for your dog#dont ruin the privilege of running dogs on public land by not having reliable control over your loose dog#i really dont gatekeep most of the areas i run my dog - i am so so happy to give local people recommendations on where to run#but please please please dont be the person who ruins it for us#i dont say this to be rude like live your dream#but consider the ethics and the privilege of having access to these areas and how easily they could be taken away#(sorry thats a rant but you get it)

What's the story behind Sal and his love for Lexa's socks?
They smell the most like mom!
Really it's that simple 😅
When she was working with the vet and physical therapists when he was a puppy, they suggested doing things to help create bonding as well as be a low impact, low intensity activity to help him train his hips and exercise. So in all her infinite wisdom and pragmatism, Lexa came up with the idea to tie a knot in an old gym sock that she'd planned to throw out and use that for games of tug of war.
And it worked!
Buuuut then she stared noticing more and more of her socks were going missing. And in an accidental investigation on a random laundry day it was discovered that the little shakey butted bandit was pilfering socks out of her hamper and hoarding them in the blankets of his puppy bed to suckle on for comfort when she wasn't around. Which is endearing, but also,,, Mr. Sal, Sir, socks aren't entirely cheap man, c'mon. Your puppy teeth are gnashing holes in perfectly good socks 😕
So from that point until forever she has to keep close tabs on every gd sock she owns because otherwise she will catch him not-entirely-sneakily waddling out of her bedroom when he thinks she's not paying attention with a sock hanging out his mouth to go take a nap with.
She's never mad, just disappointed, because every time she thinks they've broken the habit: apparently no they have not 🤦♀️
#anon#prof/stu au#teach me#he was taken from his dog mom way too early and also he's a sensitive guy#he just likes the closeness and comfort of smelling Lexa that's all

Hey y'all! I didn't get many requests for particular pride flags or pride plushies this pride month, but I did get a few requests for an intersex pride something. The intersex pride flag (like a few other flags) is more difficult for me to make, because a symbol is harder to incorporate into an oddly-shaped plushie than just stripes, and the circle will have to be* appliqued by hand so I'd prefer to limit the number of circles. So far, I have three ideas: 1. one of my pride bees (a very round bee consisting of three stripes) that's yellow with a purple stripe in the middle. There wouldn't be a flat ring, but the stripe would kind of form a ring? 2. a yellow dog plushie with a purple ring around its eye like the dog from Little Rascals. Idk how well known that dog is anymore or if it would be recognizable, but it's a one-applique option? I could also include purple patches on the back that are not rings, like the dog's markings in the show (in the movie? to be honest, I just remember the ring around the dog's eye) 3. a blue ringed octopus but the rings are purple. I think this would be awesome but I don't want to applique that many rings by hand and haven't found a fabric with the rings at quite the right scale and density for this project, so this is probably a longer-term one but I do want to make it eventually Do y'all have opinions on any of these, or any other ideas? For intersex pride plushies or for other pride plushies, I've had some work and some family things come up this month that mean I have not gotten as much sewing done this month as I wanted to, and I do love making pride plushies and would love more suggestions *yes, there are a few other ways I could possibly do that, but functionally with the way I make things it'd be by hand
#the person behind the yarn#the air conditioner being mostly broken has really taken a toll on me physically#before anyone chimes in with advice on how to beat the heat: thanks! but I am not looking for advice#I grew up in one very hot climate and moved to one that's only very hot during the summer#I know how to stay cool I just have health issues that make me very very sensitive to heat#I'm on meds for them I have strategies for managing it but nothing I can do will make me anywhere near as heat tolerant#as someone without health issues#I mean I guess the good news is I will probably never get true heat exhaustion because my symptoms are so dramatic#at such a low threshold I'd definitely go inside long before that point#(by dramatic I mean my blood pressure gets low and my heartrate gets high and if I get too hot I could faint)#(not at like. actually doing any damage to me levels of heat. my body just really likes to drop my blood pressure and takes any excuse)
