@favvn thank you for this contribution, I do love learning more about the series, so this kind of reblogs are most welcome!
I've been thinking about this post after I made it, because it might have been a bit premature, since I haven't even finished the first season yet. But this context you give me helps me understand how the dynamic evolved through time (both inside and outside the story), and I'm curious, as I watch on, to actually see it.
I guess I made the consideration on the og post based on more recent models of television, while Star Trek was actually inventing television in its own way at the time, with all the behind the scene stuff you talked about too.
As a creative person with a passion and a culture for narrative, my thought was "isn't this model going to get stale soon? Wouldn't it be a fun twist if Kirk isn't the one with the solution? ". In retrospect it was unfair of me because: first, as I said, I'm only halfway on season one, they have plenty of time to subvert their trope if they want to (is the streaming service shorter seasons format getting to me too?). Second, even if they don't subvert the trope, it's because it served a very specific function for both the viewer and the production, so it made sense for them.
One mild issue I have with TOS is how Kirk is always the one coming up with solutions. I find it very strange because McCoy and Spock have a very specific role in the dynamic: one of them rapresents instinct and the other logic (to put it simply for the purpose of this). But when one of these two skills is needed to solve the episode's problem, they are always instrumental for Kirk to get to the solution, they're never the one who actually solve it. It's a pity because it makes the "side" characters feel less important, and they should give Kirk a break too.
#star trek tos#st tos#star trek meta#also it feel like Kirk has no flaw (which is very intentional imo)#or actually#the only flaw he has is a very weird one to modern eyes I think#hiw he is always fight to keep his negative side at bay (see the enemy within)#which is like ...we all do that kirk#you're not special or especially brave#but I think at the time it had a different impact#jim kirk

Hey, I hope you're doing okay, just wanted to say I really appreciate how you honor Star Trek fandom history on your blog! I'm new to the fandom (like 2 months) so I don't yet know a lot, but your posts have been wanting to make me do more research about it. And I don't understand someone criticizing you, when one of the main arguments I've seen against Unification is that we didn't need it, because we already have our own headcanons, which is valid, but then we can enjoy Unification too without being criticized for it, when we’re all going by what feels right to us
Also thank you for being so nice on my Shatner post, I get so anxious about posting, and kind of immediately regretted it (haven't even watched SNW, who am I to get people's hopes up about a potential Spirk confirmation)
Sorry for the long message, don't worry about answering. I feel like this whole Unification thing is so emotionally overwhelming, at least to me - and I find it so disheartening that now people are arguing so much about it (but I understand of course why people feel conflicted about using Nimoy’s likeness, I do too.) Hope you can get a break from it all and have a nice day <3
hi :)
there's never a reason to be anything but nice. the internet loves to hate shatner so sometimes stories about him become more legend than fact (even the stories where criticism is valid)
i was emotionally overwhelmed in a good way before. now i'm just disappointed. it made me rlly happy to see everyone come together so i'm just being a baby about finding out that's not the case. like, now i just feel bad and weird
anyway welcome to the fandom <3 it truly is something special- please don't feel nervous about posting! also thank you for this message. i'd love to chat anytime about fanzines and trek history. i can recommend several amazing blogs (including favvn's) if you ever want.

the scene is from my wip jealous!kirk fic :p
"[...] Jim raised his head, along with his eyebrows. Bones gave him an exasperated sigh, waving his hand.
"Calm down. I think you're being stupid, yes. But... it's not like you can help it, is it? You're in love with the guy."
Kirk gave a pointed look to his food, his ears softly buzzing with embarrassment. Yeah. He wanted Spock like a starved man wanted food."

last line challenge
Thanks for the tag @unmaskedcardinal and @deadheaddaisy really fun reading what everyone is up to 😁
Rules: In a new post, show the last line you wrote (or drew) and tag as many people as there are words (or as many as you like)
So the last line l wrote in my current Enterprise WIP is sort of like a script jotting before I go back and write it properly -
Malcolm: “I dreamt I was on a boat.”
Trip: “And that's bad?”
Malcolm: “For me it is.”
(Okay so more like a last segment...)
Tagging: @saintzenni @bookq36artemis @themurdochmemesteries
@scatterbrainedcapybara @glitter-and-metal @queenspock @tuvok-enjoyer @ladyeverstark @hederigerenthag and basically anyone who wants to!, no pressure though.
