Thinking now of a tag @dark-elf-writes wrote on my mini Drabble: the playfulness of something serious and needing trust.

Cause it’s true. The situation between Melody and Alex is something serious. Melody is a Selkie whom trusts Alex with her skin. The bond between them is a strong one of friendship and care. But it’s one Alex does not diminish or ignore.

Melody’s freedom can be taken away. Alex knows what it means that she trusts them with her skin. That she trusts them to give it back.

In some of their lonelier moments, they wonder if it means more. If Melody ever looked at them how they looked at her. They brushed it off.

She trusts them. She trusts them to hold her skin and give it back. She trusts them not to consider keeping it.

She trusts them not to feel romantic feelings and so they will. Even if it hurts.

On the flip side, Melody trusts Alex and wouldn’t mind romantic feelings. She cares for them, loves them in a way few others could understand (she’s not human. She’s a selkie and it matters).

Her skin is the most precious thing for her. The most sacred. Her will power given physical form. Those who hold and keep it can make her do anything. Alex gives it back. Alex creates a bond with her that isn’t platonic. It’s not and she can tell.

But she’s scared to. Her mother had burned her skin after her first husband (Josh’s father and oh does her brother hate him) made the mistake of taunting her it was in the house where she couldn’t find it.

A selkie will do anything to be free. Including burning down the house it was in, destroying it. She could not go back to the ocean. But her mother was free.

Melody loves Alex. But she’s so damn scared because of her mother’s stories and because…

What if it ruins their relationship? What if Alex doesn’t feel the same way and the bond is just from Melody?

She loves oh does she love them.

But she’s so scared.

They have their ritual and the others know how serious it is. They know what it means so they lighten the mood with ridiculous behaviour in an attempt to help them. It’s laughter and soothing and the one time an asshole tried to steal the skin they all came down hard.

Yet these two, tangled up in trust and love, don’t say a word in fear.

and maybe selkie!Reader is a bit animal-like when it comes to humans—a wary sort of fear, but a genuine curiosity that brings them closer—and having spent their whole life in the sea (the last of a dying breed)—they're incredibly naïve. they trust him. so when he says "we're married," they just. accept it.

and i'd love for Price to hunt mc in the beginning, too. i can see him standing on the lookout deck of the lighthouse, firing shots at this shape in the water. and maybe that's what makes you wash up on shore. he goes to look at what he shot and he finds you. finds your skin. takes it. hides it.

Price teaches them what it means to be married. lil corruption kink sprinkled in. a whole lotta "you're my wife." they inadvertently feed the monster inside of him, this festering loneliness (sea madness).

i'm so in love with this. i love when humans corrupt the monster because sure, we're altruistic. we saved this poor creature but also. we're possessive and greedy and to Price—he saved you. no one else. him. you owe him something, don't you?

"Now you," he prods, and leans back on the chair, knees spread as you wobble around in his lap, getting used to the feeling of having such long, limberous legs. His hands fall to your bare thighs, holding firm as you squirm around. Restless little thing.

"Me?" You echo, blinking at him with wide, wet eyes. That's the only part that really marks you as other in this skin. Glossy, black. Too wide. Too animal. The colour beneath is slowly peaking through the inky murk, bleeding in the longer you stay on land, but it's obvious that you're not human.

His cracked, sea-dried knuckles brush over the curve of your cheek, petting the silken, human skin that you say fits too tight. He thinks it's perfect.

"Yes," he grunts, shifts his weight. "Do what I just did to you. Lemme see if you were payin' attention like you said you were. Wanna be my good little wife, don't you?"

There's a knot between your brows. The innocuous urge to tell him that you don't have a choice when he's holding your skin hostage puddling on the tip of your tongue, but he slides his hands over your flanks, feeling the powder softness of your skin under his fingers, nails catching in a quick grip. A reprimand. It leaves in a huff. A shuddering breath.

You're still getting used to the sensation of hands on your body. Still acclimating to the one you wear—chock full of nerves, a basin of raw, undulled sensation that you don't feel when you're a seal. The pelt a protective armour against it that humans don't have.

A kinder man would have slowed down. Let you get used to the feeling. Maybe even gave you back your skin and let you choose.

But that's not him.

No. He digs the tips of his fingers into the meaty back of your thighs and pulls you closer against his groin. Chest to chest. Nearly face to face if he didn't have a whole head over you.

"C'mon," he urges, belly warming at the way you gasp when your naked core meets the cold metal of his belt. "I'm not a very patient man, love."

Your hamstrings tighten under his palm as you lift yourself up, eyes still wide and wet and unbearably curious as you press your slick, warm mouth to his in a clumsy pastiche of the kiss he gave you moment ago.

He knows that seals can be incredibly dangerous, but also they basically look like a puppies. He's inching closer all while acting like he isn't. What do you mean he's been moving over to you everytime you look away?

Papyrus: Oh. My. Gawd. SAURRRRR CYUTE. Papyrus doesn't like to disturb the wildlife though, and you seemed angry... he'll leave you alone.

Blue: Touch... Blue is undeterred. He's a meathead and super strong. He can take a few seal bites. He'll be like a kid holding a front as he lifts your blubbery self above his head and rushes back to the ship to show everyone.

Hey since @dark-elf-writes got me thinking of Astoria I was reminded of an old AU where the MC was a selkie.

Here’s a short I wrote for it, couple with adding OCs because it’s an office setting and we needed coworkers. The premise is that Selkies can enter an ‘arrangement’ where if they give and then receive their skin back but don’t do the hanky-panky with the one who gave back their skin they are safe for a while from having their skin stolen. It doesn’t ‘count’.

Giving away the skin

The first time Melody and Alex had done the exchange it had been after three weeks of debate and seven reassurances from both sides. However, in the end it was the safest option. Alex taking her skin and giving it back made her safe. It made it impossible for anyone to control her. Sure, every five months they had to do it again, but it was better than someone getting it and using it against her.

It was a very important affair that took place in Alex’s office, the younger of the two handing her boss her skin- which took the form of a lovely jacket- and Alex taking it and then handing it back solemnly.

The next time was much the same.

The third time was in a crisis point for the office where Melody just chucked her skin at Alex and Alex chucked it back before running off.

That got looks.

“Are you and Cyprin dating?” Suzan asked, wrinkling her nose after the crisis was done. She voice was a little judgemental and Melody flashed her a scowl the taller woman returned.

“No. We do a temporary bond to keep me from having my skin stolen and being forced to bond with people.” answered Melody flatly. Suzan blinked but then gave a nod and that was all from her. Which was weird given she usually poked and prodded at Melody to get reactions from her. However it seemed like she was aware it was an important subject and simply did not wish to bug her about it.

The teasing started the fourth time when Alex simply picked the jacket off the back of Melody’s chair and handed it to her.

“C’mon Cyprin!” Jeff called out, his British accent very thick given his lack of sleep over the last few days of translating something for one of the heroes. “Give your wife a better show!”

“Shut up Jeff.” his wife told him, Candice smacking his shoulder and going back to her own work.

That did set the tone for the next time. Mandy had burst out into fake sobs and said, in a very mocking tone,

“It’s so beautiful, so touching. So magical.”

Melody wasn’t sure who brought the cake the sixth time. It was good cake. But she could do without the wedding figures on top of it.

The seventh time, Alex had been dared to do it in a very dramatic fashion after a night of drinks with the rest of the office. They had done so, dropping to one knee and dramatically offering Melody her skin.

She in return had taken it and acted like a fainting damsel.

She was pretty sure it was May and Mandy who threw the rice.

It really set the mood for the rest of the times. Melody didn’t mind. It made it a fun occasion rather than a nerve-wracking one. And well… the cake was always nice.

I'm stuck at home with covid so decided to play some more routes I haven't tried. I stumbled into the tea party with the selkies for the first time and it made my day!

Also I noticed the MC's grandmother's blanket changes colour every time it's mentioned. I'm probably just really unobservant not to have seen it before but it's a lovely touch.

The tea party with the selkies is one of my favorites. Bardle and Kai is just one of those little creations that is close to my heart.

And yes, the blanket changes. It was one of the nods to be an unreliable narrator in the beginning. The blanket is going to come back into it all in book 2 also.
