Not every account on here is inherently extremely harmful. If a person called themself radqueer, I added them to the list. Some of this is based on opinion, like if a person says they’re anti-contact but is doing things the show otherwise, I tagged them as pro contact. And if a person doesn’t identify as trans-race/trans-disabled but is being a bigot, I tagged them as such.

A Guide to Written Roleplay for Beginners

As someone who’s been roleplaying for 15+ years I feel like it’s important to keep this part of the internet alive and welcome newcomers who want to try their hand at it! This post is mainly going to be centered around vernacular and etiquette. If you have any questions please feel free to send me an ask! And if you’re also an experienced role player, share what I miss or your stories from over the years.

Common Vernacular

Canon- The actual story events from the media you are playing in the space of

AU- Alternate Universe, can range from slight differences to canon or be an entirely different world/scenario

Headcanon- What you, as an individual, believe about a character or world you’re playing in. This is not canon, but in general derived from it or sometimes not at all

OC- Original Character

OOC / OoC- Out of Character, this has two meanings depending on context. The first is when you wish to speak with your partner outside of roleplaying or ‘above the table’ if you’re more familiar with DnD terms. The second is when you or your partner is writing a version of the character that is not their Canon selves— of course this only applies to already existing characters

Prompt- The post you or a potential partner make in order to get a roleplay started

Starter- The starting reply to kick off the roleplay

Para- Paragraphs, an older term primarily used on Omegle and sites similar in order to specify the kind of writing style you’d like to do for your roleplay. In this instance, Para means you want writing more akin to how one would write an actual story with prose and dialogue and proper grammar

[Insert number here]+- This means how many paragraphs you or your partner are expecting to be the standard for the roleplay. For some 2-3+ paragraphs work while some people want 4-6+. Sometimes even 8+

Text- Another older term from Omegle and forums to specify writing style. In this instance, Text means one of two things: writing your characters actually texting each other (and usually signing off with their initials at the end of the message ex: I love you, Dean. -C // Don’t do this, Cas. -DW) or writing actions and dialogue without proper grammar or prose (ex: *takes out gun and shoots you* Oh wait this isn’t a camera)

[Insert Genre]!AU- This one is still used in fandom spaces but much less now than before. This is the way people communicate to you succinctly what kind of AU they’re advertising. It can also be used as a way to describe in a single world what your or your partners chosen character’s main attribute is (ex: Pirate!AU, Medieval!AU, Ballerina!Sherlock x Football Player!John, In Love!Light Yagami x Pining!L)

Godmodding- A big no no. This is when you or your partner control a character without the other’s expressed permission. For instance, say you write your character going into a room and picking up an apple and taking a bite. Then your partner sends their reply saying your character starts choking and begs their character to save them. Unless it was explicitly stated before that it was alright for you both or one of you to control both characters, this is godmodding

Multimusing- Playing more than one character

Smutfishing- When you or a potential partner puts this in a prompt, it means to look for smut or NSFW primarily for the roleplay

PWP / PwP- Porn with Plot, this is self explanatory

Lit- Literate, specifying you or your partner want the roleplay to have proper grammar and prose

[Insert age number here]+- You or your partner advertising they prefer either the characters or the person writing themselves to be at or above a certain age (ex: Looking for 21+ partners! // Characters must be at least 18+ for smut)

Bumping- The act of sending a message OOC to check in on a partner who hasn’t replied in a while (ex: Hey just bumping this to check if you were still interested!)

Volleying- When you are both available to immediately reply and can write many replies in quick succession

Matching Length- When you or your partner specifies that they want you to match or get close to matching how many paragraphs they/you are writing

Asterisks and Slashes- Common ways to emphasize a word as though you were italicizing (ex: She looked *beautiful* // She looked /beautiful/)

Ref- Reference or Reference Image, usually you or your partner provides some kind of image of a character being played or setting

Timeskip- When you and your partner decide to skip over a period of time in the roleplay

Etiquette

(These are things I have picked up over the years, they may vary depending on who you interact with)

This is the most important rule to remember: always, ALWAYS, give your partner something to work with for when they write their reply. It is the absolute worst when your partner writes something that effectively shuts out or doesn’t push the scene you’re in forward. From Para to Text, Lit or not, give your partner SOMETHING they can bounce off of. This is improv, writing on the fly! It’s either yes and or no but. Never just one or the other.

Discuss expectations before beginning the roleplay. Some people like to just jump in and reply to a Prompt that already has a Starter attached, but it’s always good to talk OOC beforehand. Telling each other triggers/preferences is important, it doesn’t kill the mood. Whether it’s just setting a standard or literally plotting out the entire story, talk to each other.

Let your partner know when you need a break/hiatus. Another very important rule: Life comes first. It has to. For both you and your partner. You may be at the very climactic moment of your rp, the whole reason for the rp to be done in the first place— only for your partner to say they need to step away for a few days or weeks or (god fucking forbid) months for one reason or another. More often than not people will just silently let roleplays sputter out, try not to take it personally. You have no idea what your partners life is like or what they’re dealing with

NO GODMODDING like seriously just don’t unless you’re allowed. It’s the worst and was very rampant circa 2016

This is more of a rule I like to follow that isn’t shared across the board, but allow your replies to fluctuate in size. For instance, if you’re writing a scene with lots of dialogue, it’s best not to hunker it down with exposition to meet the required length you need to match. And in turn if you’re writing an action scene or a big moment or something very cerebral, write as much as you like! Be sure though to make this clear to your partner and have them agree. There are many people who want to have a certain amount of paragraphs set, usually the lowest is 2-3+

Try not to be too random. You’re writing a story on the fly, not performing in an improv show. Keep to the tone of what you and your partner are doing

Don’t yuck other peoples yums. If you’re not used to seeing extremely NSFW stuff, you are in for an awakening with roleplay. You will discover kinks and fetish you never even knew existed. You will encounter things you are extremely morally opposed to. Unless the site you’re using to rp explicitly states they are not allowed to do the thing they’re advertising in their prompt, it’s game on. Do not connect and lecture them about what they can and can’t do or harass them and make them feel bad

Let your partner know when you love something that they wrote! It’s an incredibly kind thing to do and motivates your partner to keep writing!

If you are underaged, DO NOT roleplay explicitly sexual scenes with an adult and vice versa. I remember what it was like to be a teen and wanting to roleplay with adults because they wrote so much better than other teens. I implore you to resist the temptation. It’s literally illegal! It can also happen on accident sometimes due to anonymity but there have been many times in the past where a parent will find their child’s roleplay, contact the authorities and have the adult arrested despite the adult not realizing that they were roleplaying with a child. Sites that can verify age or just using logic can help avoid this (Omegle, as you can imagine, was notorious for this)

Tell your partner if you don’t like the way a scene is going and you want to change things/retcon. There’s no shame in it and it can actually make the roleplay better for you both

Be flexible, keep an open mind, and have fun! You’re writing a story together, they’re your partner and you are theirs. Enjoy the thrill of seeing and reading your partners reply and coming up with ways as to how to respond

This is a passion of mine (15+ years worth of built up passion) and it’s important to me that new people can enjoy the hobby like I do and perhaps even improve their writing skills! The primary site I use to roleplay on is cherp.chat (the format is similar to AO3’s tagging system as well as blacklist and search engine) but you can post prompts anywhere it seems appropriate (Tumblr, RP Discord Servers, Reddit pages dedicated to roleplay, Instagram, etc).

✩　prompt one: audition tape

this should be a write-up (whether a self-para or detailed headcanons) detailing your muse's audition process. what song did they perform? did they show off any additional talents? what did the company say to them? did they do anything that charmed or upset the company? how did they feel, what was going through their mind?

✩　prompt two: official profile

create an official profile for your muse. this should be an idol profile, not a muse dossier. it should look something like the profiles seen on company websites, kprofile, or kpopping and include things like their representative colors and emojis, fun facts, solo fandom name, fan-given nicknames (no nation's titles), and more. it should be written from the perspective of a fan or a company official. we definitely recommend discussing with your group members regarding things like representative emojis, colors, or etc — and be sure to double-check your group's image section to know how they're marketed, what official representative items they have, etc.

✩　prompt three: era breakdown

this should be a write-up detailing a specific era from a company-based or group-based soloist muse. include things like fan perception, criticism, styling, how long promotions were, era highlights or any controversies or issues that happened during the era, and any differences from the real-life music video (if applicable). you can get creative with this, but please keep in mind that major awards must be purchased with career tokens, and the song's popularity should reflect what's detailed in their skeleton! for group-based soloists, the era's popularity should reflect their group's overall popularity but, in cases where their skeleton mentions them being one of the least popular (or a controversial member), the popularity should be somewhat lower than their average group release.

✩　prompt four: through the eyes of...

show us your muse through the eyes of their fanbase! this can be a write-up and can include graphics, edits, fansite photos, and more. this is another one you can get creative with, but this prompt should show us how your muse is viewed through the eyes of their fans. are they infantilized? are their fans parasocial? do their fans tend to view them more romantically or more platonically? are they seen as sexy, funny, or sweet? what do their fans like about them? do their fans complain about anything? again, you can get creative with how you complete this one.

✩　prompt five: an average day on hi-u (or girl talk)

through graphics or a write-up, show us how your muse interacts with their fans on hi-u (the platform for all artists) or girl talk (the platform exclusively for girl code). you can showcase this through a glimpse of the messages they send, a write-up of their average livestream, or showing the types of stories/photos they send to their fans!

✩　prompt six: muse playlist

simple but always a goodie! create a muse playlist and share why these songs resonate with your muse.

✩　prompt seven: dear diary

share some diary entries written during significant moments in your muse's life or career, such as their trainee days, the day they made their debut, the day of their first scandal, etc. you can get creative with this! we just want to see a glimpse at your muse's true thoughts and feelings!

✩　prompt eight: open starter

post an open starter! thread starters are encouraged, but a text starter will also suffice given this is our opening week and we know written interactions are easier with plotting. completing this prompt will earn you one bonus token.

All right, so this particular writing event is a little throwback to some vintage Mob Scene, and it’s quickly become a London tradition, too! I would like to first start off by thanking and crediting Lia, as it was originally her idea many years ago. ♥

The event is still going to be called ‘Mistletoe’ because I’m not creative.

THE GENERAL IDEA:

For every character you play, you get a piece of mistletoe.

Each piece of mistletoe gives you the chance to nominate a couple–any two taken characters in the group–to meet underneath it.

The players behind the couples will write out the interaction of a mistletoe moment, and you will get to watch it unfold. Many will likely have to be written in an AU format, because I know you people are going to be extra as fuck about this, but the players involved do have the option to make it canon if they so wish (be it in the present, or something that happened in the past.)

THE RULES:

Please read them, because many of you are notoriously bad at doing so.

To select your couple of choice, just send the word ’Mistletoe’ to the main page, followed by the two names, and I will add it to the list. If the couple has already been suggested, I may prompt you to send another to get a more even spread.

You can send your nominations in straight away.

If you play multiple characters, you may send them in all in one message.

Nominations don’t have to be in character. You’re choosing. That said, if you want to have fun with that, you absolutely can. It’ll give me a chuckle.

Nominations must be off anonymous, so I know that you’re only picking one couple per character played. That being said, I’ll be the only one who knows which couple you’ve picked, so it will be anonymous in that sense.

Any format is acceptable. Whether you want to gif chat, do a joint-drabble/self para, mini-paras or a full-blown novel, all is good. Whatever you have time for.

Please don’t nominate a couple that includes your own character, vain bitches.

Please try to get involved! It’s not compulsory, but it’s a bit of fun, and I’ll be kind of disappointed if you don’t bother. If for some reason you really are opposed to the idea of your character being involved, however, send me a message as soon as possible and we can make it known. It’s not a problem. I just want everyone to be happy and comfortable with what’s going on.

When the list of couples is posted, if you have too many characters nominated and you don’t think you’ll be able to keep up, just let me know! There’s no need to feel pressured. This is just some fun, and you shouldn’t feel overwhelmed.

Lastly, after I post the list of nominated couples, if your characters aren’t amongst those selected and you would still like to be involved, I will pick a partner for you! Don’t be afraid to come forward if you didn’t get nominated but wanted to be, and remember not to take it personally. With limited numbers of selections, we can’t guarantee that everyone will be picked. Remember, I know you people and know this is going to turn into massive fucking trolling, so it’s not a dig.

Sebastian Self Para || Plus Ones

Sebastian was... not disappointed (well at least, not that he would admit out loud), but mildly put out. He'd got a message from the event organisers him and Patrick had been dealing with for their latest event, asking if he could confirm if he was bringing a plus one as Patrick had. He'd just assumed neither would be bringing a plus one and that they'd end up hooking up in a back room at some point during the night.

It had somewhat become just something they did now, whenever they happened to be in the same place (which wasn't that often really, with most of the work done for the foundation not needing to be done in person now). It had become convenient, and it was fun.

So now here Sebastian was, having to find his own plus one to an event because he couldn't let Patrick show up with a plus one and not him. So he signed, pulling out his phone and scrolling through a few people, debating who to call.

"I need a favour," he said, when the other man answered the call.

"Hello to you too, Bas."

"Yeah, yeah. Hello Jeff. I need you to be my date to a gala."

"I'm sorry?"

"You look good in a tux."

"I know that, what I don't know is why you want me to be your date somewhere. Is this your way of asking me out?"

Sebastian let out a snort of laughter, "no. But I can't go to the gala without a plus one and you won't get the wrong idea. But if you want I'll suck your dick as a thank you."

"I'm not gay," Jeff said mildly, though didn't seem offended by Sebastian's proposition.

Mack wasn’t sure what they were expecting to find when they decided to go looking for information on their birth father. Sure, they’d been curious over the years, the vague memories of the man and their mother’s general taste in men, meant that they had an idea of what he was like, but they couldn’t say they knew him, and they weren’t sure they wanted to. However, it was hard to ignore that by being back in this part of Pennsylvania they were presented with a possibility of finding him and getting important medical history. If only for Xander’s sake. He was a healthy kid, but knowing a complete family medical history would be beneficial for Ned and Emily when it came to caring for him. So, they went searching.

In their search, they learned a number of things relatively easily. He was from Bearcreek, he’d been married, and he was now deceased. Which, so much for getting medical history from him. However, he did have children. One of whom happened to be older than Mack. Meaning that Mack was confirmed to be an affair child, but worse than that, the man had managed to keep such hidden from his wife, presumably until the day he died.

Something about knowing he was dead hurt. They hadn’t gone looking for any other reason than to get medical history, but knowing they wouldn’t ever be able to see him, to ask other questions, it hurt. They could never ask if he’d gotten the call when their mother lost custody. Could never ask why the pair had split in the first place. Yes, it was an affair, but it had lasted for years before suddenly it was over and Mack would never get those answers. Because the one person who might be willing to tell them was dead.

The ensuing breakdown over this knowledge lasted far longer than Mack would have liked to admit. But, eventually, they calmed down enough to return to their research. They needed to find at least one of his other children, one of their siblings. Because they needed that medical history and… Well, maybe meeting a sibling wouldn’t be the end of the world. It could be, but they had to try, for Xander.

Quinn Fabray. She’d been easy enough to locate online and after a bunch of debating, writing and re-writing of their message, they finally hit send. It wasn’t the best message and they weren’t sure she’d even answer, but they could at least say that they tried.
