A Brief History of Alternative Romances in Choices
Series - TRR's Alternative LIs: The "Romances" that Didn't Happen
TW: Mentions of OH2's handling of Rafael (though not in detail), racism.
To be clear, this introductory essay isn't directly related to the rest of this series. TRR operated very differently to the other Choices series' when it came to alternative LIs, so a lot of what I'll discuss here won't actually apply to its specific romance mechanics.
Still, it is important to explore what it means to give an LI an alternative romance in PB, and for that we need to look at what the approach to such romances were. Both in the past, and after TRR became popular. Looking into this gives us a general idea of which specific LIs got an alternative romance, why just them and not others, and what such developments said about the way the writing team viewed a particular character.
The Choices App was introduced in 2016, with three stories that were likely meant to cater to different audiences. Out of the three, the crime drama Most Wanted was the only series that focused on a single romantic pairing.
The other two - The Freshman and The Crown and the Flame - presented players with multiple romance options for their main character(s). TCaTF split its narrative between two main characters - Kenna Rys and Dominic Hunter - exploring both Kenna's fight to gain back and then expand her kingdom, and Dom's discovery of his heritage as a member of the Fire Tribes. Even though Kenna and Dom could be paired romantically, they had other potential LIs. Notably, Kenna had 6 (Dom, Tevan, Raydan, Annelyse, Val and Diavolos) and Dom only 2 serious contenders (Kenna, Rose, Sei, Will Jackson all had romances with him. Of these four, Rose was eliminated early on in the series, and Will was a last-minute addition at the end of TCaTF3). TCaTF didn't seem to focus much on the love lives of these LIs outside of Kenna and Dom, until Book 3 in 2017 - and of the cast only Raydan and Tevan seemed to get hints at other potential romances (with Aurynn and Zenobia, respectively).
Unlike MW and TCaTF, The Freshman's focus zeroed in on just one character. It was the first series to feature a customizable MC, whose experiences and choices alone would move the story forward. The original three-book series featured romances with three LIs - Chris Powell, James Ashton and Kaitlyn Liao. By the third book, two more were added to the roster - Zig Ortega and Becca Davenport.
You could choose a boy/girlfriend by the end of Book 1, and change partners in Book 3 if you weren't happy with your first LI and/or wanted one of the newer ones. The first three books didn't really have any alternative romances for the LIs themselves, but all that was about to change (for two LIs) in The Sophomore (released in 2017).
(Screenshots from the UnruleLee Gaming Youtube Channel)
In TS, the MC had the opportunity to pair James and Kaitlyn up with other side characters if she wasn't dating them. Kaitlyn begins to show an interest in Annisa, the new keyboardist in her punk band. Similarly for James and Reyna, a member of the editorial staff of Hartfeld's student-run newspaper. Both pairings only resulted in long-term relationships if the MC encouraged them enough, and she had both free and paywalled opportunities to do so.
What is noticeable at this point is that there are three LIs that are not given romantic alternatives - Chris, Zig and Becca. Though members of the fandom did headcanon certain pairings that had some potential in canon (such as Zig with his roommate Aaron and Becca with Madison), the narrative itself never indicated any romances for these characters, preferring perhaps to focus on their romance with the MC.
A possible reason for this could have been popularity. At the time, some in the fandom theorized that Chris was the most popular of the OG LIs, and that Zig and Becca garnered popularity quite quickly when they emerged as options in TF3. So there would be a lot more investment from the teams in charge of the book to focus their writing on their MC-centric routes.
James and Kaitlyn received criticism and sometimes outright hate from fans - some of whom complained ad nauseum whenever options to help them with their professional lives or personal development came up, while being largely accepting of the more popular LIs' conflicts. So it is possible that the writing focused on giving these two LIs other romantic options, in a way they didn't need to for the other three.
However, giving James and Kaitlyn other love interests didn't affect their overall writing. The Freshman series handled the balance between all five LIs with a deft hand, ensuring that every LI had adequate growth, development and attention within the narrative. Whether they were single or paired with the MC, all of them had unique stories that allowed the characters to make mistakes and learn from them, to confront their fears and conquer them, to deal with their problems in a realistic way.
James' story wasn't simply stuck on Reyna - he spent most of TS honing his writing skills and developing a novel, and later co-writing a play with the MC. Kaitlyn's story wasn't simply about romancing Annisa - it was about dealing with her insecurities, building her band from scratch, getting over her fears of Natasha sabotaging her again, being comfortable in her own identity. Their romances with Reyna and Annisa felt like bonus side stories that we could get if we were interested enough...not the be-all and end-all of their stories.
Alternative romances for LIs didn't happen in all books. Many didn't bother with one, especially those that wound up being one-book stories. Some books that ended with an elaborate wedding for an MC and their LI also seemed to do away with this too, mostly by eliminating other love interests or making their presence scarce (for instance, in RoE, the other two LIs for "Katie" virtually disappear when she make her choice, only featuring in brief cameos and mentions). Alternative LIs often featured in series' that were successful enough to get three books, so more often than not, two-book series' like #LoveHacks would barely even have the time to develop new characters to date any LI.
The books that did end up following this route often lasted long enough for at least three books (with PM and ATV standing as exceptions), and likely had more than 3 LIs. In certain books the pairing was paywalled, and in others you could choose a number of free options to encourage the romance.
After a while a pattern seemed to emerge in who got such romances. Sometimes the alternative LI was given only to the "forgotten fourth/fifth" of a series (the extra LI who would get the least attention) - sometimes the "lucky" LI would be a character that was NOT a late addition to the roster of LIs, but an OG LI that just got so little attention and buildup it became obvious that they were given an alternative because the writers couldn't be bothered to imagine what their romance with the MC would look like. One can confidently say this because very often the "alternative romance" was written with more thought than the romance with the LI or any of that character's individual problems, and it started becoming very obvious that the writers felt more comfortable imagining the playthroughs where such LIs could only be friends with the MC.
Once the Choices app found its "core demographic" and started churning out more books, there were more and more cases of the writers indicating who their favourites were, early on (through providing a higher frequency and quality of diamond scenes for certain LIs, and through their interviews before the book releases). Which resulted in those characters getting more popular and others less so. And it was this "popularity" that often impacted writing choices and treatment.
Such a system of storytelling results in a vicious cycle, where a team will either assume already that one particular character will rake in more money, and give them a head start over others...or where a writer - through intentional or unintentional bias - could push forward a "favourite" front-and-center to the detriment of other LIs.
Here's a list of books that wrote alternative romances for certain LIs (except for OH, but I will get to that one in a minute). See if you can figure a pattern in at least most of these books:
High School Story 3 (2018) - Caleb Mitchell (Jade Ali), Emma Hawkins (Luis Marino), Aiden Zhou (Cameron Levy)
High School Story: Class Act 3 (2019-20) - Skye Crandall (Lilith Vidal)
Desire and Decorum 3 (2018-19) - Luke Harper (Cordelia Parsons)
Perfect Match 2 (2018) - Sloane Washington (Khaan Mousavi)
Across the Void (2018-19) - Zekei Sentry becomes a love interest both to the MC as well as their sibling Eos Elara.
Endless Summer 3 (2017-18) - Quinn Kelly (Kele), Sean Gayle (Michelle Nguyen). (Technically, almost every LI does get some potential in terms of alternative romance...but Estela and Jake's pairings feature mostly in the AUs shown by The Endless (Sean x Michelle, Estela x Zahra, Jake × Yvonne are all shown - among other AU romances). Quinn and Sean's romances, however, are solidified in the MC's handfasting ceremony with their LI, where the couples could share a romantic look and Michelle even leans on Sean's shoulder.)
In theory, the alternative romance could sound tempting. It allows the MC to demonstrate care and concern for an LI regardless of their romantic interest, or lack thereof. It may potentially give the reader the surface comfort of seeing an LI they rejected lead a happy life with someone they can love. It seems like a win-win situation for everyone.
But it becomes apparent when you comb through both the romantic and friendly versions of these characters' stories, that something is not quite right. I will take two LIs here as an example.
(Screenshots from Abhirio's YouTube Channel (D&D3) and Danni Stone's YouTube Channel (PM1))
Sloane Washington's major character points in Book 1 involve her love for coding and astronomy, as well as her strong bond with her mother. Book 2 (2018) does very minimal work on either of these; once Khaan enters the picture, almost every diamond scene she gets focuses solely on the possibility of a romance with him. The narrative doesn't even focus the reunion with her mother Kim on her!
Likewise, many, many complaints emerged during D&D3 (2019) about the way Luke's wedding was handled. His mother - who is supposedly very close to him - only features in letters and one memory about his brother Ezra's gambling addiction, doesn't have a name, is given a used sprite that isn't even dressed in period-appropriate clothing, and never even attends his wedding. On the other hand, his alternative romance with Cordelia was explored in excruciating detail, to the point where the two are given a wedding and the promise of a future child. It is almost as if the writers couldn't bear to envision him marrying their precious MC.
There are two major things that become apparent the more you observe the above list of LIs who got alternative romances.
One, the LIs that don't get "alternative LIs" are often white and male (Chris in TF, Micheal in HSS, Ernest in D&D, Meridien in AtV) with a couple exceptions. The writing takes care to weave their issues and conflicts into the MC's larger narrative and try their best to ensure that we become invested in whatever they have going on in their stories. A good example of this are Ernest's larger storylines about his stepson Percival and his destroyed house in Book 3. On certain rare occasions (especially when there is no default white man in the LI cast), an ambiguously brown man who can be easily exoticized fits into this role of "Creator's Pet" just as well. The writers spend enough time on perfecting their romances with the MC that there is literally no time for anything (or anyone) else.
Two, in all but two of these books, the LI that gets their 'alternative romance' most often...is a black love interest. On the rare occasion a white character is included in such a list, it is often a canonically queer white woman (only if she is an LI tho, because white female side characters have attention and love practically showered upon them) who ends up in such a position (Emma and Skye from the HSS series'). But besides that, it is usually the black LI - who btw is often one of the first people we interact with and written as the most approachable - that bears the brunt of a narrative that makes it clear that it isn't interested in exploring their story on their terms.
That is why Luke's mother never gets a name or his younger brother is hardly seen. That is why Sloane is sidelined in her own reunion scene with her mother. That is why most of the romantic playthroughs featuring these characters feel so scarce on the details or the nuances, while their white male (or ambiguous brown male) counterparts chew scenery in their own and everyone else's playthroughs.
In narratives like these, the "alternative LI" is no longer the sweet, sensitive, "they deserve happiness" route that it pretends to be...but more a sign that the writers are uncomfortable with writing said LI in a romance with the main character, and the audience they most want to cater to is uncomfortable reading it.
When the intent behind such a supposedly-nice gesture becomes so rife with bad faith, what is the end result? What happens when an 'alternative LI' - a route that seemed to promise happier futures for certain LIs - becomes more of a tool to punish them for lack of popularity? What happens when the company that created this system stops pretending to value the diversity they claimed to pride themselves in??
What happens - is that you get a story like Open Heart 2.
A lot of the stories I mentioned above were written within the space of 2017-2019. In fact, most of the books in the list came out in 2018. During these years Choices was gaining popularity in the choice-based storytelling business, and romance stories were on the rise. Many Choices Books at this point had at least 3 LIs - 2 male and 1 female - and some had more. And most of the writing teams managed to get away with treating their LIs of colour (specifically their black male and female LIs) badly without significant backlash.
At the time of OH2's release (2020), the book had four LIs in its lineup. Ethan Ramsey - like most white male LIs - was meant from the start to chew scenery. Comparatively the other LIs: Jackie Varma, Bryce Lahela and Rafael Aveiro were at a disadvantage and often it felt like the team seemed to work more on writing them out rather than incorporating their stories organically into the narrative. Rafael particularly seemed to suffer from this in the first book, and by this time making one LI the "forgotten fourth" became accepted as the norm. So when OH2's cover showed every single LI except for Rafael, there was a sense of mild alarm.
It soon became clearer, however, that something more insidious was afoot. The book itself began with a funeral, and Rafael was missing in the first chapter. When Rafael stans finally did get to see him, in Ch 2, they would be hit with a nasty surprise - the LI who was utterly devoted to their MC and introduced them to his beloved Vovó, would be shown dating a childhood sweetheart without any explanation or warning.
(Screenshots from Gabbieschoices YouTube Channel)
When asked about the sudden shift, PB's response was cryptic...but also ominous to a fandom who had already seen all kinds of unfair, horrible treatment meted out to a wide range of black characters by then:
For all intents and purposes, the relationship between the MC and Rafael appeared to be over, with very little by way of closure. Even the few diamond scenes they would get later would show friends-only options. As the book went on, it became frighteningly clear that the narrative was planning to do away with Rafael. At one point, Rafael even spoke of leaving the city altogether, and there were hints towards a far, far worse manner of departure in later chapters.
(Most people who were playing at the time remember PB's plans for OH2 Ch11-12, and the backlash, response and hiatus that followed. If you weren't there at the time, PB's Statement following the backlash - "Representation at Pixelberry" - briefly alludes to the issues that people in the fandom had with the writing decisions OH2 took at the time)
As most of us know by now, this ended with significant changes in the existing story - ensuring that Rafael lived, reinstating him as an LI and having Sora break up with him so they could disappear from the book altogether. Post 2020, no further attempts have been made the "alternative LI" route for LIs.
Part of this could be attributed to the change in format. With the introduction of VIP-access and single-LI books, the need to prepare an alternative romance for an LI has reduced greatly. Other factors too could have contributed: the extra romances becoming too much work, possible fatigue among fandom towards such pairings leading to less revenue from diamond options featuring them, certain books having only one or at most two LIs.
No one in PB has spoken of Rafael's treatment or the inclusion of Sora in OH directly...but since OH2 featured the last ever alternative romance till date, it would be safe to say that perhaps even PB recognised that the Sora story crossed a significant line. In any case, this practice hasn't been adopted in recent books in a while.
At the outset, one could argue that the Rafael and Sora situation is extremely different from the "alternative romances" I have listed so far. Unlike all the others, the intent behind introducing Sora was to deny the player a Rafael romance altogether, rather than present Rafael himself with an option. Whatever the problems with the other LIs, at least they got a romance with the MC!
However, I do think the Sora story was rooted in what the alternative LI route had become over time. It may have started with good intentions - with the idea that perhaps if the numbers showed certain LIs being ignored, it may be kinder to give them happy futures with other people who would love them. As long as the alternative romance was just a part of the character's larger story (as is the case with James and Kaitlyn), it felt less harmful and more sweet.
But when the ability to rake in finances becomes a marker of a character's worth, when the writing itself rigs the game from the start of a series, when both PB and fandom find themselves incapable of examining their own biases with regards to said characters...the purpose of such romances becomes warped.
At such points, it becomes more about establishing that this character's romance with the MC is not worth exploring. About delivering the message that it's okay to drop this LI - that as a player, you had more chance of getting your money's worth if you did drop them.
To be more clear, the Sora story is a culmination of what happens when a certain type of LI is set up to fail from the start. There are less opportunities for them to win the reader over, less time, less options to bring in money. In such an environment, the "alternative romance" becomes about considering certain types of LIs "less worthy", and spending far less time developing their MC-route - because as far as the "data", "money" and "finances" are concerned, they hardly have one!
The culmination of such a system, is that the worth of an LI can be brought down so much that the writers become comfortable with killing a non-main and non-white LI. Sora, as an alternative LI, was a way to write Rafael himself out as a romantic option, not a route meant to move his own story ahead. Sora is what happens when PB pushes forward favouritism and racism to the point where the writing is emboldened to take such steps for LIs of colour (particularly black LIs) they deem unpopular.
Which is why - in the present climate - the elimination of such a system is a marginally better prospect. If we cannot trust such a seemingly "nice" process, what's the use of having it around?
This essay series isn't about all of PB's stories, however. It is about TRR. Still - it is essential to explore and understand the original intent behind using these romance routes, and the history of how such storylines developed over time. Considering that TRR released from 2017-2018, analysing the significant patterns of that time places the writing of TRR's alternate romances into context.
TRR's approach to the alternative LI route has been different from other books, in very specific ways. One of the most prominent ways was that the narrative featured romantic options for the three OG LIs, and briefly attempted one for a fourth (the closest parallel to this in another book would be Endless Summer). Even popular love interests were presented with romantic routes, in case the MC wasn't going to marry them.
Does this mean that TRR managed to avoid falling into the same rabbit hole of bias and favouritism, that the other books did? Not by a long shot. The same problems just manifested in very different ways - and in this essay series, I will discuss those problems, romance route by romance route.

If all the other Choices Books were tv shows/books in the HSS universe, which ones would Evie and Aiden watch/read together?
For the life of me I have never quite been able to make headcanons for these until now, let's fucking goooooo
(For the purpose of these headcanons, I'm going to assume all the TV/book versions of these stories use the MCs, LIs, and other choices that I used)
TCATF, it's basically canonically a TV series in the HSS universe itself with the MC's bedroom even having a poster of it. It would definitely be something Evie is very fond of, especially for characters like Kenna, Val, and Sei. Although it wouldn't be as big of a favorite to Evie as she gets older, she'd still hold it dear to her and she and Aiden would love watching it together as a comfort show.
ATV, the whole futuristic scifi vibe is something Evie would adore and they would also looooove the soundtrack. And Aiden would have a crush on Kepler.
The Phantom Agent, they both (Evie especially) love the secret agent genre, James Bond films included. And they would both rave so hard over the opening music. And they'd especially love a wlm take on James Bond adventures. They'd definitely try and roleplay the dynamics between MC and Nurse Lou + Alexis Reid hehe.
BOLAS, Evie would love the adventure. Also Aiden would have the biggest crush on Imtura (and f!orc!MC, but I'm probably gonna have multiple MCs that I love equally) and Evie would be like the biggest "Imtura is goals". IIRC BOLAS was confirmed to be an actual game/TV series in AME Book 3, so there's that.
DLS, for... many reasons. One, Aiden would go feral for that absolute cunt-serving opening theme. Two, "Hey the main leads kinda look like us". Three, "OMG cunty genderfucking bottom dude and a tough masc buff GNC top lady". Four, it would spark Aiden's interest in trying sheer tops for when he wants to dress a little more cunty/GNC. Five, "heehee pegging coded innuendos everywhere". For all these reasons they would 100% try to roleplay the steamy scenes, or at least the steamy scenes would definitely inspire Aiden to get a little more initiative/controlling in the bedroom with Evie. Like there's one scene where the MC can make Charlotte suck his nips and be more commanding to her and I can definitely see Aiden trying that too, especially when he notices how much Evie loves seeing it happen on screen. So needless to say, she would GREATLY enjoy it.
BaBu, Evie may have negative-infinity interest in becoming pregnant, but that doesn't mean she and Aiden can't enjoy a cute pregnancy story every now and then.
It Lives, Endless Summer, TH:M, MAH, They're my other top tier favorites along with HSS and so I think Evie and Aiden would love them too. They'd quite enjoy imagining themselves in those adventures. Although I feel I should discount TH:M because I've been liking the headcanon that my f!MC Otto is an estranged maternal Aunt to Evie. And MAH because I headcanon Evie and Aiden become neighbors to and befriend Tyler and my f!MC Peggy when they move temporarily to an apartment in SF a year after they marry.

Best and Worst LI from each series
Inspired by this post by @choices-binglebonkus from a couple of years back. I came across it recently and I felt compelled to do my own.
Keep in mind that I haven't played some of these stories in a while, and there are a handful where I haven't even started or completed them. So a lot of stuff here is subject to change.
TCATF
Best: For Kenna: I'm not sure. For Dom: probably Sei because I loved their relationship in Book 2. But it's been a while.
Worst: For Kenna: I'm still not sure. For Dom: either Rose because of how she's written out of Book 2 with the inability to transfer data, or Will Jackson with how he was so obviously a last minute addition.
[MW: Haven't played yet, and IIRC this one didn't really have any LIs or romance.]
[TFS: Haven't played yet.]
ROE
Best: As pleasant as the 3 main LIs were, all their romances with MC felt very empty and rushed, which to be fair is expected when Nana's forcing you to marry by the end of the summer. As for the other characters, it's still hard to pick one that's the best cause I didn't find any of the romances particularly remarkable. I'd have to go either with Party Twin's LIs or cousin's romance with Chaz because they were the only ones that didn't feel like clusterfucks.
Worst: Like I said, all of MC's romances were empty. But since I'm including the other characters' romances too, easily Audrey and Elena. Audrey was a very unpleasant character towards Bookish Twin in Books 1 and 2. And same for Elena in part of Book 2 and all of Newlyweds; she had every right to be upset at Brother for hiding his past ex wife, but she acted incredibly petty and immature over it.
ES
Best: I didn't really get to romance anyone in my playthrough but either Jake or Estela. Jake has some really funny one-liners and nicknames. Estela I saw has the "Dont. Touch. My. Husband/Wife!!!" line that makes me really want to do a romance with her as a m!MC. I love protective gfs, I aspire to be a protective gf.
Worst: None of them because all of them are great characters. But if I had to choose... maybe Quinn? She didn't feel as fleshed out to me as the other 3. But it's been 2 and a half years since I last played so yeah.
LH
Best: None of them really grabbed me, but I'd have to go with either Leah or Ben. Ben is just a sweetheart, but I also liked the interactions between Leah and MC in Book 2.
Worst: Mark wasn't bad, but I couldn't buy into the relationship with him as well as I could the other two.
THOBM
Best: Eleanor for sure. She is partly responsible for my realizing that I'm not straight. She's supposed to be this stoic ghost woman, but gets super flustered and blushy when you flirt with her??? Bye bye heterosexuality.
Worst: Victor wasn't bad but he was just... a total non-character. Yeah, a rare story where a female LI takes the spotlight and a male LI is sidelined.
TRR: I haven't really played past Book 1, but I've already deemed Liam as my favorite LI. Though I am biased because this is the first book I started when I first got into Choices back in February 2021 (I'm a fandom baby I know), but he won my heart instantly in that premium scene where MC can take him on a boat to see the statue of liberty. And throughout the rest of the book he's just a very sweet and pleasant character. So I'm just gonna leave it at that and not deem a worst LI just yet.
Hero
Best: It's been a long time but I strongly remember quite liking Grayson. He was sweet and cute. Kenji was also pretty decent but I don't think I liked him quite as much as I did Grayson.
Worst: Eva isn't a bad character, but she was introduced way too late into the story for me to truly care about her.
OG HSS
Best: AIDEN ZHOU AIDEN ZHOU AIDEN ZHOU AIDEN ZHOU AIDEN ZHOU AIDEN ZHOU AIDEN ZHOU AIDEN ZHOU AIDEN ZHOU AIDEN ZHOU AIDEN ZHOU AIDEN ZHOU AIDEN-MOTHER-FUCKING-ZHOU!!!!!! Sweet mother of all things holy how am I supposed to talk about this in only one paragraph???
As if it wasn't obvious, I love everything about him and he's easily my favorite Choices character of all time. For one, I love male characters who are more on the soft and gentle side. Aiden is definitely that, and his tendency to get flustered and blushy is adorable. For two, he's passionate, dedicated, just very earnest and down-to-earth. And especially in Book 1, we see how he struggles with self-esteem. He's passionate, but he doesn't consider himself as such. He considers himself a failure for the screwed up halftime performance. He doesn't feel he knows how to communicate to MC right and thinks lower of himself for preferring to communicate through music.
I found a lot of these aspects very relatable myself, outside of music though, because I can't play an instrument to save my life. But I do have a passion for stuff like drawing, writing, and editing. And I think relating to Aiden so much sort of added to how authentic the romance route with him and MC felt for me. There were a couple of moments where I could have my MC sort of connect with him– the rooftop scene where MC can say that seeing how passionate he is inspires them to do better, their scene at homecoming in the band room where MC can say that social interactions don't come easy to them either despite how confident they can be.
And just... the whole romance route feels so earned and well-paced? I mean I'm sure all of the routes in HSS are like that but I especially love it here. How you can give him time of day to listen to him play piano, slowly help him step out of his comfort zone, I love how protective you can be of him in Book 2 and how you can be there for him when Isa and his parents are punishing him, and how he's then being there for you during the Book 3 drama when you're accused of sabotage. And all the moments such as becoming official with him, him confessing his love to MC and how you can confess back... it just all feels so organic.
Also the romance route with him hits so much different if you romance him as a band kid. You get extra moments with him, not to mention when you're about to play his song at the spring concert and they say how "there's a glint in his eyes you haven't seen before" and after you play it they say "his eyes gleam with pride" like HELLO??? That extra bit of connection they have when they're *both* musicians???? Shit like this is why I sing my praises to this trilogy so much.
Worst: None of them! Okay but if I had to choose... well, this is gonna pain me to say this, but Michael.
I adore his character arc and he's my second most favorite HSS character and Choices LI, but when I tried romancing him (and I did so twice), I noticed he actually felt a lot more underdeveloped in comparison to the other LIs. Specifically in Book 2, as he's the only character who isn't really struggling with anything. He felt very lacking in presence for the first half of that book– even moreso than Emma, whose subplot didn't even have anything to do with the main Isa plot. And so Book 2 kinda felt like this big gap in the relationship journey that he and MC can have.
Then again, maybe he and Evie Ayana (my MC) just don't have all that much chemistry and I should try romancing him as a brand new version of the MC.
ILITW
Best: My personal favorite is Lucas, but honestly? It's a tough tie between him, Andy, and Ava. Andy I'd say had the stronger character arc, but I personally related more to Lucas. Ava however is certainly the most memorable and witty of them.
Worst: Connor. He's not bad and I quite liked some of the banter between him and MC, but he is lacking in ways that make him stick out like a sore thumb. All these other LIs are characters attending school with MC, that MC has been friends with since childhood, who have all experienced Jane's death up-front as kids. Connor lacks all of that, being Stacy's older brother of 2 years and not really part of the friend group. And he doesn't really have much of a character arc like the others do to make up for that. I don't mind MC romancing outside of their close childhood friends, but it just felt a bit harder to connect with him on the same level as the others.
HFTH:
Best: Wyatt was probably the most memorable of the bunch.
Worst: Nick was annoying, but he did get better in the second half of the story. Holly was alright but very bland.
[RCD: Haven't played yet.]
PM
Best: Hayden without a doubt, though I'm certainly very fond of Sloane too. Hayden is a literal robot, yet they still feel more like an actual human being than like 90% of the customizable LIs we've been getting. The whole arc with them basically having an existential crisis upon realizing they're an android, then eventually going on to start a new identity for themselves... I loved it. And as a bonus, the customizable aspect is kind of integrated in the story itself rather than being a meta choice.
Worst: None of them. Maybe Alana and Khaan, cause they seemed to be somewhat pushing some romance with them in Book 2, but it felt very muddled and unclear.
BB
Best: All of them. But I'm probably most fond of Kamilah "I'm *her* queen. And she's mine." Sayeed. Jax and Lily are close seconds though as they're incredibly memorable (also the mass fandom hatred for Lily that was apparently a thing... yeah very sus to me. why did y'all hate her.)
Worst: None of them. I'd say maybe Adrian didn't stand out quite as much as the others?
[VOS: Haven't played yet.]
AME
Best: None of the LIs really stood out to me but my favorite would probably have to be Jen, she was sweet and always tried to help MC.
Worst: Derek had to be the most lackluster of them all IMO.
[D&D: Haven't played yet.]
ATV
Best: For MC: I was most fond of Kepler the buff queen and Meridian the sweet medic. For Eos: Gee Zekei, how come PB lets you be a romance option for two playable characters? For Pax: Holmes is precious.
Worst: IDK honestly. I wasn't a fan of Zaniah's betrayal or whatever it was. But IDK.
[BSC: Haven't played yet.]
HSS:CA
Best: Objectively speaking, Skye. She's the one thing that HSS:CA enjoyers and HSS:CA critics and haters can agree that is good about the series, and honestly that's deserved. Everything about her character storyline is pretty damn immaculate. That being said, I romanced Ajay and I'm personally very fond of him. Although I didn't care much for him in Book 1, Books 2 and onwards make him a much more sympathetic and compelling character. And personally, I tend to chalk up the whole siding against MC thing to be lazy OOC writing considering A) he'd warned MC about Danielle in the earlier chapters and B) directors generally have a responsibility to stay unbiased in these kinds of situations, and given how seriously Ajay takes being a director, realistically I think he would have tried to stay unbiased and tell the other accusers to fuck off. PB, you did my boy dirty.
Worst: Rory. I didn't hate them and they're a pretty decent character on their own, but they're easily the weakest LI of CA and of HSS as a whole. They have zero character development over the trilogy. Book 1 forcing our MC to crush on them and agonize so much over wanting their first kiss with Rory on stage was obnoxious and unnecessary, and it didn't help that their entire personality in said book didn't really go much beyond "popular theatre heartthrob". They try so hard to force us to like them by flaunting how popular they are and having Cunt and Nasty– sorry I mean Clint and Natalie– constantly fawn over them. Rory was thankfully no longer forced in Book 2 and had somewhat more character (also the way they called out Morgan's hypocrisy and single handedly destroyed her campaign is peak Rory), but the whole election plotline did nothing for their character. Book 3 gives them some sort of conflict with their parents, but it's just the group thinking Rory's dad is cheating only for it to be the good ole misunderstanding cliche.
ILB
Best: Tom. Parker was pretty adorable too, but nothing beats the part in the premium lake day scene where Tom wishes he'd won a giant teddy so he could put it in the passenger seat and be able to go into the fast lane and then MC can give him the teddy they won (if they did win).
Worst: Danni for how she can be needlessly callous towards Parker's memory if he ends up leaving the group. Even if he's dead. It comes off as extra hypocritical if Danni ended up caving to Astrid's temptations as well.
[TE: Haven't played yet.]
ACOR
Best: Either Syphax or Cassius for their loyalty to MC.
Worst: IDK.
TH:M
Best: Eris Huang is an icon. "Merry Christmas, ya filthy animals".
Worst: I didn't care for Sonia. I mean she was alright and I liked her redemption arc, but she just didn't vibe with me as a LI.
ROD
Best: Colt is the only LI I felt had any real character depth, any real significance, any real reason for me to give a shit about him.
Worst: The pushing of Logan as the main LI felt very forced, unnecessary, and undeserved. Like... there wasn't anything all that special about him.
OPH: I haven't really played past Book 1, but I'm quite fond of Bryce.
[PTR: Haven't played yet.]
[WT: Haven't played yet.]
NB
Best: Katherine the "I don't like being saved" was fun to romance as a male MC. But either Vera or Cal would have to be the strongest character-wise.
Worst: None of them really. None of them are super amazing to me, but I didn't have any problems with any of them.
[PT: Haven't played yet.]
[SK: Haven't played yet. Tried to once but I got bored and quit 5 chapters in]
BP
Best: Aisha for sure. She's just a very vibrant and fun character.
Worst: Reed and Ash were nice and cute, but other than that... not much. They were pretty useless to the plot too.
MOTY
Best: All of them. IDC. They're all super compelling.
Worst: None.
[StD: Haven't played yet.]
[TRM: Haven't played yet.]
BaBu
Best: Mayor Dixon was really fun to romance. The female version especially contributed to my possible bi awakening.
Worst: I liked Clint as a character but the first chapter tries wayyyyyy too hard to get the player to be turned on by the thought of having his babies. The Clint fangirls in that scene were so clearly written by someone who's never met a single woman in his life outside of some stereotypical textbook-definition Facebook Karen moms I'm sorry
[HC: Haven't played yet.]
WEH
Best: Well well well, this seems to be the first ever single-LI story on the app. And personally I think Dakota was a pretty decent and compelling character.
Worst: None
BOLAS: I haven't started Book 2 yet but I already know my favorite is Imtura. I especially love how shamelessly RoleReversal her romance is with a male MC. Praying it carries over to Book 2.
AVSP
Best: None
Worst: This book was boring and Simon/Ava's motives for making a fake marriage with the MC felt very contrived.
Witness
Best: Cassian. This book sucks but Cassian was at least a pleasant character.
Worst: None.
DS
Best: None.
Worst: None. Honestly I don't have many feelings for the characters in this one.
TNA
Best: Sam Dalton. I mean he's not brilliant or anything but I do have a bit of a soft spot for them because TNA 1 was the first Choices story I ever completed. Also the first time a f!MC was allowed to get up in her m!LI's bootyhole.
Worst: Also Sam Dalton because of all the "+Desire +Desire +Desire +Desire +Desire +Desire" and shit
QB: I've twice attempted playthroughs of this and ended up neglecting both of them halfway through Book 1. But I did quite like Ian/Ina.
TUH: I started a playthrough back when it was releasing to all and then ended up neglecting it by like Ch10. I'll need to start playing again, but I remember being quite fond of Mr. John Somerset.
MTFL
Best: All the LIs were pretty compelling characters, they just had shit stories with a shit MC. But of the three of them, Ava was probably the most compelling to me.
Worst: None.
MM
Best: IDK. I'm tempted to say Jack/Jacqueline because I did like their banter with the MC, but other than that they were rather bland.
Worst: Like I said, Jack/Jacqueline felt very bland outside of the banter they could have with MC.
[RT: Haven't played yet]
WB
Best: Morgan was easily the most fleshed out and compelling of the two LIs.
Worst: Bastien is derivative as all hell. Seriously, pick up any werewolf-themed YA erotic story and the male werewolf LI in it will almost certainly be identical to Bastien.
[FA: Haven't played yet]
SB
Best: This is a tough one. Chef Flint's character was a lot more derivative and I personally preferred being around Julia(n). But Julia(n) was also an incredibly useless character, you could remove them from the story and nothing important would change.
Worst: See above.
LOA
Best: As much as I didn't care for the series, I did find both LIs pretty decent. But of the two of them, Aislinn is much more fleshed out.
Worst: Gabe, who wasn't bad but wasn't nearly as fleshed out as Aislinn.
SW
Best: Manu was a pretty interesting character. The relationship with them is pretty straightforward, but it was interesting and even a bit sweet later on. And apparently your bond score can determine whether or not you survive in the last chapter? Also this is the only single LI story I know of where you can choose a more platonic route with the LI.
Worst: None.
WTD
Best: I think I liked Angel the most. She was fun.
Worst: I'm not sure really.
Surrender
Best: None. None. None. Noooooooooooone.
Worst: Fuck Reagan Thorne. Worst LI on the app ever. I'll admit Book 2 does go a little more in-depth with their background, but as someone who has been in a similar situation, God they botch it horribly because 90% of this book is spent doubling down on Reagan's toxicity. And just when MC finally gets the self-respect to leave them after that awful "When a woman agrees to be my sub she agrees to obey" line, they then throw it right in the trash with how easily she ends up getting back with them. Bruh throw the whole LI in the trash.
COP
Best: Trystan is a fun character and their relationship with the MC is very refreshing. They're both equals for once in a single LI story, and it'll be interesting no matter which gender you choose for each character (whereas in most single LI stories they're really only interesting if you play as anything other than wlm).
Worst: None.
UT
Best: None.
Worst: Kit is the textbook definition of a soulless personality-less customizable LI. They try to push them as this "player" except it's moreso just people flocking to Kit rather than Kit flirting with others.
TPS
Best: Clarke was a fun character and the female white sprite also contributes to me knowing I'm not straight.
Worst: Devon was nice but they were kind of bland and useless.
TCH: I've only played Book 1 so far and haven't yet started Book 2, but I found Kieran pretty decent and I enjoyed their development.
ID: Gabe was sweeter and I kind of liked their interactions with the MC, but Cas was more interesting, so I'm not sure. But there's a Book 2 on the way so I can't properly judge anyways.
MAH
Best: Tyler! He's arguably the least developed of the LIs but he was my favorite because he's just so babygirl. I miss when we had true softie male LIs. Also, bonus points for the dialogue changes about him realizing he's not straight if you romance him as a male or enby MC.
Worst: Not sure. Maybe Donovan because he could be a bit callous to the MC in the earlier chapters. I get why he was acting like that, but some of it did seem a bit excessive. But even then, he's still a very fleshed out character and his callousness doesn't go on for too long, so it's hard to, in good faith, deem him as the "worst". But I will also say that Stevie being MC's childhood best friend felt very poorly set up.
TPA
Best: None of them. Rowan was underdeveloped and Agent Grey was mostly very one note. They have some alright interactions, but I personally found the two hookup options Lou and Alexis far more interesting.
Worst: Like I said, Agent Grey was very one note. They seemed to be trying to go for the whole James Bond trope with having a companion that he has a bit of bantery romance with, except there wasn't much flavor to the relationship between MC and Agent Grey. Grey's character is pretty much entirely just being a tsundere.
[GNV: Haven't played yet]
[KOD: Haven't played yet]
[GG: Haven't played yet]
RWB
Best: None.
Worst: Drew had some alright character development, but I found them mostly unremarkable. "Baby Bird" was also very infantilizing.
FCL
Best: None.
Worst: How is it that every single character on-screen, even Sky who's a complete stranger, could figure out MC was scheming against Rebecca, but Rebecca's partner themselves apparently could not? Blake is either spineless as all fuck, or was just doing shrooms during the entire trip. Or both.
[TDA: Haven't played yet]
[KND: Haven't played yet]
TBB
Best: None
Worst: Cole/Callie is bland as all hell and very unreliable. Tries to use a baby to save their and Daphne's relationship and then proceeds to cheat on Daphne. Only in like the last chapter do they talk things out like actual grown ass adults, but it's too little too late.
DLS: I'm still catching up but I'm enjoying Charlie King.

The Fight Part 2 (Kenna x Val)
Part 1 can be found here. This was going to be scrapped but Michael encouraged me to finish it - thanks friend and also thank you for pre-reading :D NSFW, meaning anyone under 18 should not read this.
Word count: 1963
Tagging everyone who asked on the first one: @kennaxval @strangerofbraidwood @brightpinkpeppercorn @tornbetween2loves @crazypeanat @queerchoicesblog
As the Queens lay as one, all that was heard was the rhythmic sound of rain drops drumming against the window-panes. It became more and more insistent as thunder and lightning graced the unfathomed beat; it was as though the Gods were celebrating the passionate union that had just taken place. Each roar of thunder grew louder and wilder, a sound which encouraged the Queens to carry on. Val glided her left hand over Kenna’s full breast, gently squeezing her erect nipple while kissing and licking her lover’s neck. With each movement, Kenna’s heart began to beat harder and faster, the fire seemed to crackle louder; the missing pieces to the hypnotic yet natural procession that had graced their dalliance. There was something different in the air and Kenna wholeheartedly knew she was about to experience new heights of pure ecstasy; something she believed Val had already given her.
“Queen Kenna are you there?” a gentle voice spoke, followed by a contrasting thud at the door. Val quickly pounced on top of Kenna, silencing her with a heated kiss.
“Va….”
Again, the former mercenary feasted on her lover’s lips, gently biting on her lower lip while she whispered “Shhhh, we are not here”
“Nghh…but what if it’s important? I’m sure I heard Lia and she would not dare knock on our chamber door without reason”
“This better be good Kenna!” Val unwillingly released Kenna, so they could quickly cover themselves with a robe before opening the door.
“What do you want Lia? I can’t wait for the day when you and that Technocrat are behind closed doors” Val breathed through gritted teeth.
“VAL! I am so sorry Lia, my wife can be…brash”
“Oh…erm… Whitlock…no!” Lia’s pale skin immediately flushed, and the Queens could not help but let out a teasing giggle.
“Ahem, I’m sorry for the interruption but your guests are growing wary. Dom and Sei have stalled for as long as possible but I am scared they may eventually set the castle on fire”
“Gods!!! My love we forgot it was the 1 year celebration since The Five Kingdoms was reunited. Lia please apologise to our guests; Val and I will be there shortly”
With a huff, Val shut the door and stomped over to the window. Moments later, she felt the only true warmth known to her as Kenna encircled her arms around her wife.
“Val-“
“No Kenna…don’t try and tell me this is what we need to do as Queens! As Queens we should be able to do whatever the hells we want. This is exactly what I was talking about in the morning – we never get time to be just…US! Our lives are constant work with little time to enjoy”
Kenna placed a gentle kiss on her lover’s temple, she turned her around and lifted her chin to ensure their eyes met. “I understand your frustrations my love. There is nothing more in all the lands that I want more than to spend every waking moment in your arms, but our people need us. The sooner we go to the celebrations, the sooner we can be back here” Kenna steps even closer and nibbles on Val’s ear before whispering “To make it up to you, maybe I’ll let you do that…thing you’ve always wanted to do”
“Promise?”
“I promise my love” With a wink, Kenna sauntered away leaving her wife to stare on in disbelief as her imagination went wild.
—–
The grand hall had never looked so beautiful. Annelyse had taken the liberty to adorn the room in the finest gold and silks. People laughed and danced merrily, the smell of wine and ale was almost heavenly and as Kenna took a deep breath, she admired what her strength as a ruler achieved. The memories of her mother’s dreams and aspirations washed over her and the happiness she felt at this moment was overwhelming. Val knew her wife so well that she didn’t even have to ask what was wrong. She gently wiped the tear away whilst squeezing her hand, “She would be proud gorgeous. Now, let’s get this over with and do our queenly bidding so we can get to the good stuff”. Kenna jerked forward at the unexpected firm slap on her rear. A furious blush spread over her cheeks as her mind wondered but was quickly interrupted by a tap on her shoulder.
“Dom it’s so good to see you. I believe you nearly set Stormholt alight while I was…delayed”. The friends embraced and shared an unspoken understanding that they were ok, more than ok. “So, tell me, how have you and Sei coped with bringing the mountain people down? Is there anything I can do to help? Your correspondences have slowed my friend”
“Oh Kenna, it’s so good to see you too. But stop, this is a celebration, let’s talk business later and enjoy. The only thing I will say is that Sei and I have definitely…improved on our relationship and that’s why my letters have been delayed”
“It’s about time you and Sei got it together” Val staggered over, placing a strong arm around Dom. He fidgeted nervously as this was the first time she had been friendly since the unfortunate event.
Kenna let out a soft chuckle, “I’m sorry Dom, it looks like my wife has had too much ale and is drunk”
“I’m always drunk around you…drunk in the brain in my heart” Val placed a lingering kiss on her lips and continued “The noble folk are getting impatient, they are ready to hear from the most beautiful woman in The Five Kingdoms”.
“Thank you my love and I love you too. Dom, my apologies but I shall speak to you later”. Kenna walked to the centre of the room and it instantly grew quiet, every gaze fell lovingly upon her, eagerly waiting for their warrior queen to speak.
“My people, 1 year later and this kingdom flourishes more and more at each passing day. Together we took back our homes and united the kingdoms. As long as I am your Queen, peace will be a promise, joy will be a promise and our lands will be a force stronger than no other. So, eat, drink and dance the night away. Live as though this is your last night on earth”. The walls seem to shake as the applause and chants of undying loyalty filled the air.
As Kenna moved from noble to noble, she kept an eye out for Val, hoping to steal a glance but an hour had pass – no luck. Kenna began walking to the soldiers and as she was about to speak she was pulled behind a pillar. Val pressed her body against Kenna’s and captured her mouth in a passionate kiss. She deepened the kiss and couldn’t help but tug at her lover’s clothing. The heat between them was incomparable, their desire built at every touch and kiss. “Mmm…Val we need to go now. I can’t wait, grab some wine and meet me in our chambers”.
——
Val’s eyes grew wide at the sight of her wife laying seductively in her chemise. She skilfully balanced both goblets of wine in one hand as she began unbuckling her armour, not once breaking eye contact with the beauty before her. Their gaze was intense in the silence, both Queens could already feel the heat between their legs growing. She placed the goblets down and to Kenna’s delight, she teased the rest of her clothing off ever so slowly with a slight sway of her hips. “My love…are you sure you want to try this?” In response, Kenna reached behind her to reveal handcuffs which she earlier borrowed from the dungeons. Val leapt and captured Kenna’s lips in a passionate kiss. Their tongues worked in perfect sync as Val snaked an arm around her lover, she lifted her and moved up the bed until Kenna’s back was against the headboard. Without breaking the kiss, she took the handcuffs and expertly locked Kenna’s hands behind her back. She finished the kiss with a light tug at Kenna’s lower lip. Her hand slowly glided down her lover’s body, stopping to massage her breasts through the thin fabric. She moved lower and lower, but as she reached where Kenna wanted her most she ran one finger ever so lightly over her mound, still working over the chemise. This small touch had Kenna already trembling and straining against the metal that bound her. Val glanced at her wife to see that her eyes were already hooded as lust seem to pour out of her eyes.
“Mmmmm…please Val…please touch me more”
“Not yet my love. I-I-I…have something else for you”. She reached beneath their bed and revealed an Olisbokollikes.
Kenna’s eyes grew wide, “W-what are you going to do with that?” Val didn’t respond, she tentatively got on all fours, turning so her rear was facing Kenna. “Gods…the best view in the castle” Kenna breathed. Val looked over her shoulder and with a wink she slapped her arse, leaving a red mark in its wake. She took the Olisbokollikes and started teasing her wet folds. Her moans grew louder and louder, the warrior Queen squirmed against the cuffs as her centre began to throb. All she wanted to do is break out of them and touch her wife, feel the warmth that was building. Val was missing Kenna’s touch, so she slowly backed up until her arse was grinding on her body. She grinded lower as she sat in her wife’s lap – still rubbing her wet folds. Kenna instantly buried her face in to her neck, kissing and biting, trying but failing to grind her hips up, earning more moans from the former mercenary as she reached round and pulled at Kenna’s hair. The throbbing was almost painful, and Kenna couldn’t take it anymore, “Please my love…I need you RIGHT NOW”. Val turned around so that she could straddle her, brushing her breast over her mouth. She kept a small distance, so Kenna could not find the relief she ached for. She tried to remove the chemise, but the cuffs were getting in the way. In her frustration, Val decided to rip the dress off, revealing her wife’s perfect body. “You are so beautiful my love”. In response, Kenna pushed her head forward and claimed Val’s lips as her own. Val couldn’t resist, she put her weight down and began grinding her hips against her lovers. Kenna’s head fell between Val’s breast as they both came undone at the same time, but Val wasn’t finished, she was ready to please Kenna for the rest of the night.
She reached for one of the goblets of wine, “Drink?”. Kenna was still catching her breath, so she nodded. Just as the wine touched Kenna’s lips, Val purposely let it spill down her body. “Oops…I’m so clumsy, let me clean that up”. She slowly licked down Kenna’s neck, once she reached her breast she took each peak into her mouth, sucking and massaging. She worked lower, licking the wine from her wife’s flat stomach, over her hips and lower. As she reached Kenna’s centre she grabbed her and lay her down, spilling more wine in to her centre. Kenna was shaking with anticipation, which was quickly soothed by Val’s mouth working passionately to bring her to climax. Her hips began to buck wildly as Val began to lick and suck on her sensitive nub, her fingers moving in an out until her lover was writhing beneath her. Screams and moans filled the room as Kenna arched her back in ecstasy.
“OH MY GODS!!!! Val you are incredible. Please unbind me, I need to touch you”
10 minutes later and Kenna was still trembling and catching her breath…
