I under stand if choosing a book for his presumed dead daughter might’ve been lower than Manny’s other priorities in the princess AU, but the concept of Amity catching Luz reading Azura is incredible.
Imagine struggling your entire life to work under the the god-empress and then one day you see her reading the work of YA fiction that you also made your entire secret personality back when you were 14.
It’d be like working for the President and having them casually ask if you’ve ever heard of Vriska.
oh my god. Oh My God.

The Crown & The Flame: An Exceptionally Rare Critical
I have made no secret of how much I love The Crown & The Flame. One of the three original series that accompanied the launch of Choices back in 2016, it holds a very dear place in my heart as one of my all-time favorites. However, I value objectivity, and am fully aware (and even appreciative) that all of my favorites, no matter how much I love them and no matter how good they are, have flaws.
The Crown & The Flame is no exception to this, and though I think the books have held up remarkably well, they’re definitely very flawed. Particularly book three. Most of my gripes with the series come from book three, actually, and that is the very subject of this post: the issues that came with the final book in the series.
As always, these are just my personal opinions. So if you love TC&TF, that’s great! I love it too. I just thought that, since the series gets so little criticism, I would take an objective stance and take up that role.
Pacing and filler
The first issue I’d like to discuss about book three is its pacing. Compared to the first two books where everything was go, go, go, this book doesn’t really do that. And I’m not a huge fan of that since the stakes are arguably larger in this book since Empress Azura has literally threatened to kill everyone in the Five Kingdoms should they not submit to her.
A lot of the chapters are positively BLOATED with fluff and filler. The first three chapters take place in Ducitora and the only major plot points that occur are that Kenna meets Azura, Leon is killed, and Azura wages war on the Five Kingdoms as Kenna and co. make their escape. I think that the first three chapters could have been condensed into one and a half chapters bridging onto the next major plot point. At the very least, we should have gotten to see more of Ducitora and Marossi. We got to see very, very, VERY little of it, and with little substance to show for it all.
Dom’s chapters didn’t have a lot of substance to them, either. It’s mostly just Dom fighting Hex’s mind control, making some semblance of progress, immediately failing and succumbing further to her control, and getting frustrated or feeling guilty. And, while I’m thinking about it, what purpose did Dom being captured by Hex serve? In what way does it further the main plot? It honestly just felt like the writers had Hex capture him just so he and Kenna wouldn’t be together 24/7 to keep them separate for their dual-lead chapters. In other words, his capture seemed to serve primarily as filler as well.
My biggest complaint regarding filler comes from chapters 13 and 14, which are E N T I R E L Y filler, no two ways about it. Chapter 13 focuses on Kenna speaking with all the allies she’s amassed, and the chapter time is seriously cut down if you haven’t recruited any diamond allies. Chapter 14 is the exact same thing, but this time, Dom is the one who talks to all the allies. Why they needed two chapters of pure filler, I’ll never know. But I’ll tell you what: back when TC&TF was still releasing on a weekly basis, I was so annoyed that we had two whole weeks of filler. There was no need.
The worst part about all the filler was the impact it had on the buildup to the final battle. Compared to book one and two where we fought tooth and nail for the entire book to get Stormholt back or to prepare for Luther’s return, the buildup to the battle with Azura felt very underwhelming: the book was mostly just a little bit of plot here, filler there and there, here we are switching POVs to one of the side characters for a couple of chapters, here’s some more filler. In books one and two, there was practically NO filler, and the buildup to the final battles was much better for it.
A lot of books are pretty notorious for filler and fluff, but TC&TF book 3, dare I say it, may have been the worst about it given the high stakes and the generally fillerless precedent set by the previous two books.
POV flipflopping
In books one and two, you got to play as characters other than Kenna and Dom in diamond scenes, plus that one time where Val infiltrated the Nevrakis stronghold masquerading as a handmaiden. Other than that, the writers stuck religiously to the Kenna/Dom POVs, and the story was much less choppy, confusing, and generally less all over the place because of it.
This is not the case in book three. You play as Kenna and Dom, yes, but the POV flip-flops around between other characters as well. Leon, Val, Raydan, even Whitlock. I’m shocked as hell that they didn’t somehow manage to cram in a chapter where we played as Annelyse or Sei.
Of these different POVs, Raydan’s was the most important and by far the least filler-y. It still didn’t really sit well with me, though. The Crown & The Flame is Kenna’s (and Dom’s, but mostly Kenna’s) story. Book 3 is 17 chapters. Kenna—the main freaking character—is either unplayable or mostly unplayable for nine of them. Nine! But she gets off much better than Dom—the deuteragonist, mind you—who only gets three chapters where he’s the main focus. And, of course, you’ll recall my previous complaints about how Dom’s chapters were filler. So.
Having all these different POV switches was not graceful in the slightest. It was unnecessary for the most part, and at times, it really came across as a Wattpad POV fic where the pre-teen author interjects every few paragraphs with <{[CHARACTER A’S POV]}> and ~{[CHARACTER B’S POV]}~ because, like I said, it wasn’t graceful, and it wasn’t necessary. Especially since TC&TF is a dual-lead story.
The allies
I actually made a ranking list from worst to best of every recruitable ally in TC&TF across all three books. It’s currently unpublished on my blog, but it’s been sitting on my computer for a while. At any rate, most of the book three allies were ranked very, very, VERY low. There are 32 recruitable allies in all, and numbers 32-27 on my ranking list are all book three allies.
Aurynn Amanth, though I liked her as a character, doesn’t do shit after you recruit her and is only in a grand total of two extra chapters if you recruit her, and for 25 diamonds, that’s so goddamn steep. Clover Hapley also serves no real purpose for 23 diamonds, but somehow appears more than Aurynn and for two fewer diamonds. Florian Tartassis and Zenobia Nevrakis were recruited just to fill the allies roster, plain and simple. Anton Luno was just kinda…there. And Luther—the Blood King who mercilessly slaughtered the royals and nobles of the Five Kingdoms, who conquered the realm and waged war against any who dared to rise against himdoes fuck all unless you give him control of the Nevrakis army, then tries to murder Kenna at the end regardless.
There were only a few book three allies I ranked higher than #27. The Mechawolf Pup, who didn’t do much, and who I also found annoying as hell, but he was kiiiinda cute I guess. Lia really stuck her neck out for Raydan by translating the anti-magic book for him, but she doesn’t do much when you recruit her. And I love Madeline to pieces, but she’s 30 diamonds and only appears in five chapters.
Hex was the second highest ranked book three ally on my ranking list at #6 overall because she was such a complex character, and though she was incredibly morally grey, recruiting her nudged her towards active atonement and the chance to actually do some good in the world. Diavolos was ranked #3, and I think he really could have been an awesome character in the series if we had gotten to know him sooner because the dynamic between him and Kenna is impeccable, and he’s such a vulnerable character when you think he wouldn’t be.
Unfortunately, most of the book three allies are just there to fill the ally roster or do damn near nothing once you recruit them. The only allies we got who were heavy hitters were Hex and Anton (recruited jointly to fill the ally spots) and Diavolos. Since book three is the highest-stakes book of them all since we fight an entire fucking EMPIRE, we should’ve gotten some seriously powerful allies. Instead, most of who we got were characters who couldn’t fight: Aurynn, Clover, Madeline, Lia, the Mechawolf Pup, Zenobia, and Florian.
What kind of sense does that make?
Finishing things off…
The Crown & The Flame, to reiterate, is one of my favorite series in Choices. I’ve replayed it time and time again and never get tired of it because it’s just that kind of story. And I do like book three. I’m not saying it’s a bad book at all: it’s actually quite a good book. I just think it’s much less of a good book than 1 & 2, which were absolute titans to compete with.
Even my faves are imperfect. But that doesn’t mean I love them any less. And TC&TF book 3 is a shining example of that: flawed, but still perfectly lovable.
With all that said, I think I’ll give the series another replay soon.

Do your characters/worlds celebrate a winter festival of sorts?
I'm not gonna lie this sort of worldbuilding always eludes me the first time around. Nevertheless, the festivals do exist, it's simply a matter of consulting my worldbuilding docs!
Trials of the Six
The cultures of Rymn have some variation on the festivals, but they all celebrated the solstices in some way. For the Cei in the Permafrost, they celebrate the solstice of the hibernation season (winter), which is at the beginning of the shortest days of the year, where the sun only rises for about five hours. One of their ancestral feasts also occurs during the hibernation, so they celebrate that as well.
The Tyans have a mid-hibernation festival, in remembrance of a great siege from several hundred years ago (they were at war with Tectuem, the Tectuma also celebrate the same festival but for different reasons). They also have multiple festivals during the year for Erens, the creator, including one during hibernation.
Mareln and Sala have shorter hibernation seasons, being in the mid-southern hemisphere, they celebrate the solstice and the first frost.
Tectuem has the solstice, the festival itself also honoring the ancestors, and if the current Empress's coronation occurred during hibernation, they celebrate the anniversary of that as well.
Ilunians, being multi-cultural, tend to celebrate many of the above, they may also honor the founding of their home fleet if that occurred during hibernation.
Tales from Valaria
The humans celebrate the winter solstice (though the specific traditions can vary between continent and city). Humans in the central continent also have a mid-winter festival for one of the celestials (if anyone wants a Worldbuilding Wednesday on the different celestials just say the word hehe).
The elves don't worship the celestials but they have a festival in remembrance of the first sang attacks, and their solstice festival doubles as their religious feast. If a coming of age ceremony takes place, both the elves and the sang will celebrate it.
The Draigo's founding day celebration takes place in late winter for the central continent, honoring when the stronghold and council was established. The eastern and western continents have similar holidays, but they take place at different points in the year when their strongholds and councils were established. Most of the surviving Draigo post-genocide still honor the tradition, but in a bittersweet manner. Some survivors have abandoned the tradition altogether.
Magician school graduations are occasionally celebrated, along with the founding of the main school for rune-writing on the western continent. Early magicians are seen as great historical figures, and their memory is often honored during these celebrations.
The Legend of Orian Goldeneye
Winter festival traditions vary widely from city to city. Households have their own familial traditions, but city-wide celebrations are common, though in more recent times tensions have been especially high during the celebrations.
In Saint's Shoal, when the shrine was active, the acolytes organized a specific ceremony at the beginning of winter intended to raise funds for the poor. Diana still honors the tradition, using much of the money she raises from performing to benefit the poor (alongside her smuggling, which also benefits the less fortunate).
Iron Hollow has a solstice festival, though festivities often end before dark due to how tightly controlled the city is by Azura.
This festival doesn't happen during winter, but it's fun enough to mention anyway. It's specific to mid-Atai, and remembers a duel between two princes vying for the kingdom. The prince who won the duel spared the life of the other prince. The festival involves a dueling tournament over multiple days, culminating in a final duel of champions. Ironically, the final duel often ends with the death of the loser.

BACKSTORY
Kenna grew up raised by her mother, Queen Adriana, after her father's premature death. She was never interested in balls or frilly things, but rather train with a sword with her best friend, Dominic Hunter, an orphan who had been taken in by servants. Many thought that the pair were in love, but really, it was all platonic.
Kenna grew into a beautiful, yet fierce young woman who craved riding into battle and bringing glory to her kingdom. That is, until Luther Nevrakis assassinated the rulers of the Five Kingdoms, her mother included. Kenna swore to avenge her death one day.
DURING THE SERIES
After the disastrous banquet, Kenna ran away to the Ruins of Rajkur, where the monks trained her to one day retake Stormholt back into Rys hands.
Unfortunately, Prince Marco Nevrakis was obssesed with killing her so no threatn would come when it came to the sole Nevrakis rule. With Luther off to fight the Iron Empire, and Kenna having been ambushed, she ran off to Leon Stirling's camp filled with mercenaries and former Stormholt soldiers.
They soon recognized her face, for she had a bounty on her head, and she decided to fight Severin, head of the mercenaries, in exchange for loyalty and recruiting the mercenaries and soldiers. It was a tough battle, but Kenna reigned champion and decided to recruit Severin than execute him. He'd prove to be a deadly fighter.
Next they were off to Aurelia, for its wealth was famous across the realm, as well as it was hidden. The beautiful and charming queen welcomed Kenna herself and threw a banquet in her honour, and both shared a romantic moment, as well as she got acquainted with her spymaster, Raydan.
Much to her dismay, it was all a cunning ambush from Marco to capture her, and he almost succeeded, had Kenna not struck him with a hidden dagger, and escaped. Her next destination was the famous Foundry of the Technocrats.
On the Labrynth, they found a young boy by the name Whitlock, who proved to be an asset in her quest to defeating the labyrinth and its beast. Now at the Foundry, she found out that Whitlock was the leader and recruited him to her cause.
With a mighty army at her back, Kenna rode to Stormholt, where the final battle would ensue. The battle's tide favoured Kenna, but Hex's -who was Whitlock's mentor- cannon turned the tides, Kenna had to fall back in order to persevere lives.
With Dom's help on the inside, the cannon was destroyed, and Kenna went for Marco in a mighty duel, where she ended up decapitating him for his crimes.
After winning the battle, she was crowned the rightful queen and prepared herself for the next threat: Luther Nevrakis himself, who'd return soon to tighten his grip on the Five Kingdoms.
Next, she went to Thorngate, where she defeated the Nevrakis army and convinced the Thorngate people to join her cause and proclaimed Rowan Thorn as queen, although the battle had a terrible cost: the castle almost burned, and Dominic lost control of his powers, almost burning Kenna alive while trying to save her from Vassilios Nevrakis' attempt on her life.
Now with Thorngate at her side, she travelled incognito to Alriel, the famous city that was under the crude rule of Florian, who had an iron grip on the ship builders. Kenna encourages the citizens to rebel, and fight back Florian's tyranny. Although they don't dethrone Florian, they do get what they wanted... a fleet, and travel to Lykos, where terrible news are met: the Foundry has been destroyed by Hex!
Before Luther arrives, they must also take Lykos and capture Zenobia, and they have to ask for the help of the Adder of Lykos... Raydan's sister. The Adder proves to be cunning and cruel, but Kenna proves her wrong and even gives her a poisoned dagger. Making a deal with her, she parts to Zenobia's masquerade ball and discovers how cruel she can be. With her eyes on Zenobia's necklace, Kenna sees one fire user controlled by Hex and prevents him from killing while Raydan steals the necklace, and they all escape in time... but Helene Leventis, the right hand of Luther and Gabriel's killer, intercepts them. Kenna uses her wit to let her see that serving the Nevrakis ins't honourable and that she's a coward for clinging at her, and Helene finally sees reason... and joins her cause, deserting Luther.
Meanwhile, in order to weaken Nevrakis rule, Kenna sends Val into the viper's den as Zenobia's handmaiden, where Val uses her cunning to gain the princess' trust and capture her, and she does a formidable job, as well as getting intel on what Hex is planning, and even steals a weapon that proves mighty in the battle.
After much preparation, and with Dom back from his mission, they prepare for the Battle of the Bay, and while it started well, soon Kenna was in danger, but was rescued by Dom... turned into a mighty blue dragon! They both soared the skies, sinking Hex's ships and reducing Luther's army by much. While Dom kept on burning everything, Kenna faced off against Luther, and after a tough fight, she won the fight, capturing the Blood King himself.
However, Dom worked himself too far and collapsed... right into Hex's clutches, who captured and enslaved him for her own, evil purposes.
In the aftermath, while interrogating Luther, Kenna discovered why he had come back so soon to the Five Kingdoms: the Iron Empire. After that, Kenna received an invitation to visit the empire.
Everything started off well, but there was something off about the empire and the empress herself. When they invited Kenna and her companions to a championship, Leon, Kenna's personal guard and warrior, was sacrified for the empress. In her pain, rage and grief, Kenna swore to take an eye for an eye.
They fled Marossi, not without taking Clover, Azura's handmaiden, with her, as well as a wolf pup whom Whitlock taught how to talk. They'd recruit everyone in the Five Kingdoms to make alliances... starting with the Nevrakises.
Kenna invited the remaining Nevrakis family to dinner: Luther, Zenobia, Diavolos and their ally, Florian. What started as a tense situation, Kenna used her diplomacy and soon connected with the youngest son, Diavolos, whom Luther sent alongside Kenna for her mission to fight back against the Iron Empire. Kenna, Diavolos and Annelyse went to Aurelia to avoid further wreckage while Raydan and Val went to Fydoria to seek answers against Empress Azura's power.
On Aurelia, Kenna, Diavolos, Jackson and Sei fought against dragon Dom while Whitlock stayed safe in the airship. The fight was difficult, and Kenna almost died, but Dom returned to them, as well as Sei's friend Anton, and it seemed like Hex would flee again... but Whitlock intercepted her and confronted her, making her see reason, and willingly took her prisoner. Kenna decided to make use of Hex and make her work for her as redemption.
When returning to their headquarters, Kenna received devastating news: Raydan had betrayed them for Azura, and had thus injured Val in the commotion.
After days, Kenna and Raydan reunited, but she was not happy. He was a traitor, after all. As they sparred, he proved that he had been a mole in Azura's side and had discovered Azura's weakness: spells and her own daughter, Lia, whom he had brought with him as a secret weapon against the empress, who turned out to be a thousand years old. They fought off Azura's shadow assassins and interrogated Raydan about his findings after he recovered from his injuries.
With one last night before the battle, Kenna spent the night with Val, Annelyse and Diavolos. The day after, Kenna prepared for the battle as Azura's army came to Stormholt. The battle was her most difficult and challenging, and seeing that Azura had no qualms killing people left and right for her own purpose, she played the deadliest gamble: she'd fight Azura herself in a one-on-one combat against Azura.
Raydan's spionage proved fruitful and her anti-magic spells weakened Azura's offense, and when it seemed like she'd die, with one last effort, she struck Azura, killing her in the duel. In that moment, everything was fine.
But Luther Nevrakis betrayed her and tried to kill her, but Diavolos himself helped her duel him and killed him as well, thus ending all of the threats of her reign.
To celebrate, she decided to marry the love of her life, the woman she had loved all along... Annelyse Adair, Queen of Aurelia. They celebrated a lavish wedding, where Kenna was queen consort of Aurelia and Annelyse was queen consort of Stormholt.
AFTER THE SERIES
A year later, they had a baby boy, Marcellus, and while conceiving was hard on Annelyse's part, the baby was healthy and cheerful. Two years later, they'd have a girl, Ayrin, the future queen of Aurelia.
During those years, Aurynn married Raydan after thorough Fydorian courting demanded by her advisors. Diavolos and Adder never married, but suffices to say, that they were together for the rest of their lives, and through her, the Nevrakis line continued. Val remained a bachelorette-although she never lacked good company-, and Dom and Rose finally married with Trystan's approval, while Sei and Anton got together later in life.
The Five Kingdoms eventually joined officially under one country named Cordonia, with the Rys royal line still standing after many centuries.

Swap au idea
I kinda like to think that Philip and Luz would be swapped though. And Philip would probably been raised by Caleb.
Got any ideas for that?
A handful right now:
Empress Azura (Luz) wants revenge on the human realm for how it mistreated her and her late parents, and plans to use wage war against her old home; not only is she amassing an army for the 'Day of Conquest', but she also plans to find titan blood to free the Collector from his prison, further assuring her victory.
Pip, upon falling into the demon realm, moves in with the outlaw witch Alador Blight and his little roommate, Tinella Nosa.
The Empress' will is carried out by her emissaries, the Red Reclaimers (both grimwalkers of her parents).
Pip falls in love with the young witchlet, Raine Whispers.
I'll try and come up with more another time :3

Princess Luzura of The Boiling Isles
This is an Owl House AU fanfic that's been on my mind for a while, so I thought you all would enjoy it! The poll results said you would, so this is the prologue!
______________________________________
Prologue
The girl backflipped onto the stable ground of the cliff as she braced to attack. Her mint green hair and white dress flowing in the wind.
"Foolish child, I could swallow you whole!" The massive purple snake monster shouted, baring it's fangs.
"Do not underestimate me, Gildersnake! For I am the Good Witch Azura, Warrior of Peace!"
A slight pause, then the witch knelt down and loaded her staff.
"NOW EAT THIS, SUCKA!" She yelled, firing massive fireballs at the Gildersnake as it recoiled and fell.
"No, my only weakness! Dying!" The Gildersnake's last words were.
A loud crash onto the cave's floor, and the monster lay dead forevermore-
"Princess?" A guard knocked at Luzura's door, the thirteen-year-old shoving her 'Good Witch Azura' book underneath a stack of papers.
"Y-Yes? What is it?" She answered.
"Your father would like to see you, your majesty."
"Ah, yes, I'm coming. Thank you." Luzura clipped on her white Emperor's coven cloak, exiting her bedroom and walking through the corridor towards the throne room.
Two guards stood in front of the entrance, talking about something that was evidently funny, given how much giggling was going on.
Luzura's stomach began to squeeze, for some reason, their laughs affected her. She felt that they were laughing at her, despite that the giggling was going on before she showed up.
Despite this feeling, her face remained stiff, as she cleared her throat to announce her presence. The guards jolted, just now noticing Luzura, and stepped out of the way and opened the door.
The girl stepped inside, taking a few steps before the door shut behind her. There, she waited.
The emperor sat on his throne across the room, his staff in one hand, the other's fingers tapping against the arm of his throne.
"You requested my presence, Father?" She asked, taking a deep breath.
"Yes, come in, Luzura."
She walked up to him until she was just a few feet away from the throne. She curstied, staying like that with her head bowed.
"I wanted to discuss your progress in your studies, Luzura."
Oh boy, here we go again...
"Your work is becoming...sloppy, my dear, and you're letting yourself be distracted from what's important. I would hate to see your priorities be shifted."
"My apologies, Father, I am trying my best in my studies."
"I can see that you are, but I can also see the various drawings on your papers and such. And you are taking longer and longer to complete what you need to."
"Father, I can explain-"
"There is no need to, you're young, you're imaginative. But you need to set your fantasies aside if you ever hope to be a good empress in the future."
"I understand."
"Good. That is all. You should head to bed, it's getting late."
She stood up, exiting the room, and walking back into her quarters to prepare for bed.
After going through her nightly ritual, Luzura poked her head through her door, making sure the coast was clear, before slinking back into her bedroom and pressing a stone into the wall.
Said wall then opened up into a secret room. Only Luzura knew of this room, and she used that to her advantage. The room had bean bag chairs, action figures, shelves and shelves of books, and posters of various fictional characters littered the walls.
All of these were her "secret nerd things" as she called them, hidden away from the eyes of her father.
She snatched a book off of a shelve, plopping onto a bean bag to immerse herself into another world until she actually went to bed hours later.

The Raven House - The Boiling Isles Empire
Centered in Camelot at the heart of the Titan, lies the capital of the Boiling Isles Empire that encompasses the world. Its architecture (A mixture of Renaissance and Byzantine) makes Camelot look as beautiful and inviting as the capital, hiding the surveillance and authoritarian nature of the Empire. At the Titan's Heart lies the Royal (or "Owl" as some would call it) Palace, its unknown crystalized structure is forged together with equally unknown mechanical machinery to create a Magitek fortress (Think of Kintsugi). A rumor suggests the crystals and machinery came from something far beyond the Demon Realm but none have confirmed this rumor.
The Empress "The Titan's Radiance" serves as the head of the Empire. She rules the Empire with a soft yet brutal hand all in the name of the Titan. Hidden behind her Ballroom Mask, she gazes upon her subject with purpose. If her subjects are causing enough trouble, she'll use her Palisman, Beowulf (Great Horn Owl), to quell those rowdy subjects. She had come to power first as the Mayor of Bonesborough after losing her daughter during the Witch-Hunter Invasion. All in the name of the Titan, she promises they will avenge their fallen and "civilize" the other side. Those closest to her may refer to her by her name, Camila. She states any humans who appear in the Demon Realm should be referred to as "Hunter" and brought to her.
Dukes and Duchesses are appointed for each region with the Boiling Isles as one of those regions. The Barony of the Round Table, the best 9 Dukes and Duchesses, manages the day-to-day runnings of the Empire. The Barony also heads the Coven Houses, the nine houses of certain magic fields chosen for their military value. Anyone joining one of the nine houses will gain one of the coveted Sigils, brands that enhance the users's specific field of magic (at the expense of the other fields of magic). The head of the Barony is the Grand Baron/Duchess and the current one is Eda Clawthorne, the most popular Grand Baron/Duchess in the history of the Barony.
There is also the elusive Silver Soldier. Her shining silver, grey armor and ballroom mask note the unofficial voice of the Empress. There are rumors that some spot her in the bookstores when the Good Witch Azura novels are available. She is a popular figure who is seldom seen by the public.
The Day of Unity approaches and forces marshaling at the Titan's head, they will purify the "Witch-Hunters" on the other side and teach them the right way. The Empire thankfully dealt with the last holdout, the Titan Trappers, in the glorious Faithful War. The Faithful War (Death to all heretics of the Titan and celebrating the faithful who brought an end to them) was celebrated as the end of the Unification Campaign to unite the entire realm under one banner, one culture, and one Empress. Soon, humanity will learn to be enlightened by their Empress and therefore the Titan's light and embrace.

“Willow’s New Garden” (Another Owl House Swap AU) Episode 3
(QnA)
VRM: "This honestly looks very good."
Aw, thank you.
Mr. Spinner: "This was an excellent flip of "Separate Tides". And the Cynthia coven reference was great!"
Thanks. I feel Willow would be smart enough not to fall for Adegast's schemes, and I wanted to introduce the Armorer and Enforcers as early as possible. I figured if Willow were a fantasy fan, she would like Cynthia Coven more than The Good Witch Azura. I think a Harry Potter-ish urban fantasy would fit Willow better than a Lord of the Rings-like High Fantasy Luz would enjoy.
Mr. Spinner: "Dell's intro is fittingly subtle, with his gentle warmth and his quiet disapproval at his wife's continued quest. Plus, he's a Huntlow supporter right off the bat, hehehehe!"
Dell is still a loving husband, but he can't support Gwen's obsession with finding a cure, especially since it was a factor in what ultimately drove Eda and Lilith away. And even if Gwen did find a cure, they have no idea where Eda is on the Isles, what she's been up to since they last saw her, and if she'll even want to take the cure. And yeah, I think he would recognize how Hunter looks at Willow. It was precisely how he looked at Gwen in his teens.
Mr. Spinner: "It's interesting that you would use the glyph themes as accepted "elements" of magic on the Isles. Perhaps the types of spell phlegms in the bile sac? And I can only imagine how quickly Willow learns plant magic, along with the other three."
Since I assume wands are only meant to be used by novices, they would only have access to native elemental magic like fire, ice, plant, and light. Spells that would be easy to cast. That's not to say a wand is incapable of casting advanced spells; they could match or even exceed a staff with enough skill.
Mr. Spinner: "Viney is always a great addition, and I can't help but notice a parallel between her here and Willow-to-Luz in canon. Plus, duh - ASIAS reference with Puddles! Woo!"
Yeah, I thought Viney would fit with this chapter. I think she would protest hunting endangered animals in canon if given the opportunity. She and Hunter know each other from the Detention Track and have used the secret room to study magic along with Jerbo, Barcus, and Luz.
Mr. Spinner: "The Blights being pawns of the throne draws some interesting questions about their backstory. Also, is Belos around in this? You referenced the Empress once, but Belos several other times?"
Belos saw that the Blights would do anything to gain more power, so he used their ambition to convince them to allow their children to be turned into his elite soldiers. The emperor's relationship with the siblings (especially with Amity) is far different from how he treats Hunter in canon. Let's just say that if it came down to them choosing Alador and Odalia or Belos as a better parent, they would choose the latter and join him without hesitation. "Empress" was a typo I made, but I addressed it.
VRM: "Grimwalker element still here?"
Yes, Hunter is still a Grimwalker here.
VRM: "Canon Luz struggles with friends for her weird quirks, a Lumity swap called Keeper of Secrets on AO3, which switched their homes and parents but not species, has Amity shunned for her pointed ears, and accidental magic she didn't know she had."
That sounds like a good read with an interesting premise. I'll check it out when I have the chance.
VRM: "Was this Willow bullied for anything in particular? What do you consider her previous town before Gravesfield?"
That will be answered in the chapter.
VRM: "With Belos' reign for 50 years and Eda's teenage flashbacks for 30, I would've thought that the system was in place for 20 years and Gwen would've been branded... but alright."
Well, I was under the impression that Gwen got branded from joining the Beast-Keeping Coven only after Eda got cursed. Which meant she was a wild witch for 20 years. I'm guessing that since Belos's grip wasn't as tight back then as it is in the present, there were more "wild witches" roaming the Isles.
VRM: "Heh, Waffle - nice. If Luz made a blue jay what do you think she'd call it? FrenchToast? Blueberry? XD"
She would definitely it call the blue jay one of those. I think Blueberry more because it sounds cuter.
VRM: "Canon Luz is Hispanic, I saw a Swap!Amity who's German. Is this Willow Asian and speak another language? If not, any chance could Luz have found a Spanish book and learn it with her mom?"
Yes, Willow is Asian, Korean, to be specific. She can speak the language, too; she's just not as fluent in it, like how Anne from Amphibia can speak Thai but isn't as fluent in it as her mom or dad. Also, in this AU, Luz did find a book on how to speak Spanish and learned it with her mom for fun.
VRM: "Yup there's still Tibbles and trash slugs (Luz discovers Azura, right?)"
Yup, Tibbles is still around, and Eda still does her "dumpster diving" in trash slugs, and unfortunately, Raine, King, and Hunter get dragged into helping her. And yes, Luz has discovered the Azura books and is a fan of them.
VRM: "Salty moment was nice."
Yeah, despite the name, Salty is a sweet guy.
VRM: "Yet to see how Hunter avoid Belos but glad he got a better life."
Hunter does have a better life here.
VRM: "Excited to see Luz next time! (will her dynamic with Hunter be any different?)"
That question will be answered in this chapter of the pitch. I hope you all enjoy it.
______________________________________________________________
(Here is my pitch for the third episode/chapter):
At the Clawthorne residence, Willow practices magic by growing plants in the garden that Gwen and Dell helped set up in the backyard with the same flowers Hawksley stole. Gwen woke up with back pain and is having a quiet day with Dell, and Hunter's at school, leaving Willow, whose only able to garden and exercise, very bored. Finally fed up with it, Willow asks the Clawthornes for anything that will give her a chance to leave the house and explore what lies outside. Gwen doesn't want to risk Willow's safety by sending her out alone and has Hawksley accompany her to run a few errands. Willow accepts as she grabs a hood to conceal her ears, and Hawksley perches himself on her shoulder, ever watchful. Willow and Hawksley head into Bonesborough together for the errands, with the palisman instructed to fly Willow away as fast as possible if something dangerous happens. Dell tries to assure Gwen she'll be all right, but Gwen is still worried and says a small prayer to the Titan to protect them both.
Willow makes her way to Bonesborough with Hawksley, talking to him while taking in the beauty of the forest between the town and her only living place on the Boiling Isles. While walking, she suddenly hears a conversation nearby and peeks over a bush to see two witchlings: A tall girl with tan skin and a shorter boy with dark skin. The boy complains to the girl, Luz, about Mattholomule telling members of the "Human Appreciation Society" lies about humans. Luz assures the boy, Augustus, that Matt is "full of it" and that he should trust his knowledge on the subject as the club's president. Suddenly, Luz tackles Augustus to the ground, dodging a flaming ball that would've hit both of them in the face. A group of girls led by a pink-haired tri-clops laugh at them, and Luz identifies her as Boscha, who proceeds to harass them, calling Luz a "half-a-witch" and Augustus a "failure." Willow wants to step in with her wand, but Hawksley snatches it before she can do something she may regret.
After the bullies leave, Luz comforts an upset Augustus by taking out her glyphs and using them to perform a trick in front of the boy. He compliments her, saying that while she lacks natural magic, she makes the most of her self-taught skill. Willow is amazed to see a spell being cast by something other than a wand or naturally, but the wind suddenly picks up and blows Luz's glyphs to Willow. A fire glyph activates, burning the bush, and Hawksley nearly flies away with her, but Willow calms him as Luz and Augustus finally meet the girl. Luz apologizes profusely, but Willow assures her that she wasn't harmed; Augustus gasps as he sees Willow's human ears and squeals. Luz and Augustus introduce themselves, and Willow realizes the wind blew her hood off and admits to being a human. Willow gives Augustus the nickname Gus, which makes him even more excited and makes Luz laugh. After chatting with Willow, Gus reminds Luz they're about to be late for school, which is when the witch girl suddenly gets an idea to bring Willow with them to Hexside.
Gus is immediately on board with an actual human seeing H.A.S. After talking about it with Willow, she decides to go with them to the school, if only to help them with their problem, especially the bullying problem that got under her skin. Willow assures Hawksley everything will be all right as they follow Luz and Gus to Hexside; she pulls her hood over her ears before entering and finds it… okay. Hexside doesn't appear that different from a regular school in the Human Realm but is immediately caught off guard by all the differences she sees. Willow then hears Hunter's voice call out to Luz and Gus, greeting them as friends, and he instantly recognizes Willow and Hawksley. He asks what they're doing here, then suspects Luz and Gus to have something to do with this, and they come clean. Hunter thinks their plan is terrible, but Willow convinces him she'll stay safe and shouldn't worry. Luz asks how Willow and Hunter know each other, and Willow explains where she lives, which leads to Gus saying to Hunter, "She lives with your gr—" but Hunter shushes him.
Hunter points out they'll need somewhere for Willow to hide until later, but Luz and Gus have the same idea of where she can hide. They take her to the Detention Track but run into Principal Hieronymus Bump, who is suspicious. Bump reminds them to be on their best behavior as an inspector from the Emperor's Coven will be coming today and wants to ensure Hexside gets the funds it needs. While the Detention Track teacher sleeps, Willow meets Viney again, along with Jerbo and Barcus, and Luz and Gus explain everything to them and agree to hide Willow in the secret room until lunchtime when she can be introduced to H.A.S.
They pass the time by spying on the other classes, and Viney explains how all the magical schools work on the Isles.
· Hunter is in the Potions Track, having just gotten out of the Detention Track for "good behavior."
· Luz was also Detention Track for a while but is now back in the Healing Track.
· Gus is an Illusion Track prodigy, and Willow sees his skills on display.
· Peeking into the Bard Track, Willow sees a girl playing the harp beautifully.
Willow asks why they're in detention and learns that multi-tracking is banned:
· Jerbo tried to mix plants and abomination magics.
· Barcus tried to do oracle and potion magics.
· Viney tried to combine healing and beast-keeping magics.
· Luz ended up in the Detention Track because she tried to take all the different classes at once, even breaking many of the school's rules in her plan to do it.
· Hunter ended up in the Detention Track by throwing a stink potion at Boscha because she bullied Luz to the point of tears, which is how they met.
Barcus notices Willow's "aura" felt uncomfortable at the mention of bullying and asks, with Jerbo translating, if she is all right. Feeling like she can trust them, Willow shares that she grew up in Salem, Massachusetts, and always preferred the company of plants over people. She tried to make friends once, and it seemed like she did, only to be revealed as a cruel prank to humiliate her, and everything went downhill from there on out. Her little self-esteem made her a target for bullies, the "Boscha" types, who also mocked her for her appearance, being a plus-sized girl, and it didn't help that her teachers were ignorant of this harassment.
Things got so bad that she didn't think her dads could help, and she didn't want to feel like she was burdening them. Willow has their sympathies, and they tell her that she shouldn't feel like she would burden her parents and that they love her, but Willow feels otherwise. Jerbo warns everyone that "the bells will be screaming" in five minutes and must return to the Detention Track before the teacher wakes up. The Detention Track students leave Willow with Hawksley in the secret room but will return when the teacher falls asleep again.
After lunch, the H.A.S. members gather in the club room, and Gus and Luz shock everyone by presenting Willow. Before she can disprove anything, Mattholomule confesses to fabricating human items. He wanted the club's acceptance, not having many friends after transferring from Glandus. The H.A.S. meeting concludes with everyone forgiving and giving him another chance. Willow tells them she has to leave to do the errands she was sent to do, to begin with, and get back to the Clawthornes.
On her way from exiting via the back of the school, Willow bumps into the harpist from the Bard Track, Skara, and immediately apologizes, but Skara assures her that she's okay. Before they get a chance to introduce themselves, Boscha shows up and asks Skara what she's doing, but she doesn't get a chance as Boscha turns to Willow. Willow sees first-hand how possessive Boscha is of her "friends" and how toxic she is, belittling Skara for talking to "some nobody girl." One part of Willow tells herself to get on Hawksley and leave, but another part wants to confront Boscha about her bullying of others. But just as things were about to escalate, Principal Bump arrived with the inspector, looking for Skara in particular. Skara is one of the school's top students and a prime candidate to show they're worth the funding.
Willow gets a strange feeling from the inspector but ignores it as she's about to leave Hexside, but changes her mind, and just in time, too. Willow finds she was right not to trust the inspector, as she's revealed to be a giant, serpent-like monster that proceeds to drain Principal Bump of his magic, rendering him unconscious; then does the same with Boscha before moving on to Skara. Using her wand, Willow conjures vines to seal the inspector's maw and grabs Skara, who looks sickly pale from having her magic drained out so unexpectedly. They hop onto Hawksley and fly through the school, warning teachers and students as the inspector chases them, intent on killing the human. Students flee while teachers fight back, but they ultimately get their magic drained from them, and the monster resumes her chase. Willow comes across Gus, Luz, Hunter, and the other H.A.S. members and warns them of what is happening.
The inspector arrives, and the H.A.S. members try to fight her off, only to get their magic drained. Hunter fireman carries Gus while Luz uses her glyphs to create a distraction long enough for them all to hide. Luz leads them to the secret room, where Viney asks what's happening, and a semi-conscious Skara asks where they are hiding. Willow explains everything that's happened, and Viney identifies the monster as a greater basilisk. She adds that they should be extinct by all accounts and that the Emperor's Coven ensured they were killed off some decades ago.
Willow tries to convince everyone still conscious to help, but while Luz is willing, Hunter, Viney, Jerbo, and Barcus aren't as willing to risk their lives against a natural predator to witch-kind. But after some convincing and seeing the teachers and students' peril, they eventually agree, and Skara—fading in and out—says she has a plan.
Following the bard girl's plan, the troublemakers combine their strengths to lure the basilisk into a trap, causing it to regurgitate the magic and flee from the school. The gang celebrates with the students and faculty restored, but Principal Bump reprimands them for breaking the rules. Before he can punish them, Willow defends her newly made friends, explaining that Hexside's teachings are too restrictive. Swayed by her argument, Bump reluctantly allows students to take more than one class and even offers Willow to attend Hexisde if she wants. While Willow declines the offer, Bump still gives her a pamphlet just in case she changes her mind, adding that "Hexside may benefit from a fresh perspective."
Elsewhere, the basilisk is tending to her wounds and swears vengeance upon Willow and the others, but she's suddenly captured by the Amethyst Armorer, calling her Number I. She explains that Emperor Belos has been looking for her for a long time and is eager to have one of his prized creations returned to the castle immediately. The basilisk says she would rather die than be taken back to Belos. However, the Armorer responds that they have II through V in custody and will be executed if she refuses. Fearing for the rest of her kin, Number I surrenders her freedom as the Armorer tells her she has an essential role in the Day of Unity.

(The characters and other notes):
I don't know about you guys, but I find it funny that I gave Willow a wand in this story, only for the "Pilot" episode to show Polleena (Pilot Willow) using a wand, too.
When I mentioned Willow was bullied for her appearance, being a plus-sized girl, that wasn't the only thing she was harassed for. Jerks would also insult her heritage, calling her Chinese slurs and such (she's Korean, by the way).
What bullied Luz into tears was Boscha making fun of her dad being dead. I initially planned for Hunter to give Boscha a black eye, but I decided to humiliate her with a stink potion was a sweeter revenge.
Skara wasn't with Boscha, Amelia, and Cat when they were picking on Luz and Gus in the woods, which is why Willow didn't know her. Also, I wanted to plant some Skarlow seeds into the story, as I still plan to keep the main ship Hunter x Willow x Skara.

So, what did you all think of the third episode/chapter? Anything I should've done differently or improved upon? Let me know your thoughts; I'll answer your questions when I upload the fourth chapter/episode. As always, if anyone is interested in making this AU a reality, please, feel free to use it.
Take care, everyone, and have a wonderful day or night.
