Didn't post last week because I hadn't watched or read a single thing during the fires that wasn't the local news, and it was horrifying.

And so, this week, I finally finished up Michelle Zauner's Crying in H Mart and depressed myself all over again. It's a good book. I feel everything she's laying down, but as someone whose mother is getting older (she's still, thankfully, in wonderful shape and healthy) I really took it to heart. It explores mother/daughter relationships, bi-ethnic identities, and mortality (and food!!) with such skill... and I just related a little too hard.

I also watched Evil Does Not Exist. Slow, meditative, doesn't get you until the last few minutes and then you're still still wondering what you just watched. I watched an interview with Ryusuke Hamaguchi and he talked about how he'd come up with the movie as an exercise, as a concept piece developed with the film's composer for one of her art installations. I wouldn't have known that going in but in retrospect it makes sense. He indulges a little too much sometimes, but because his actors aren't all professional actors, there's something that's still naturalistic there. It was another one I was left ruminating on, and which didn't exactly lift my mood.

Then, yesterday, while I was still grieving David Lynch (I didn't think it would hit me this hard; I didn't think about his demise at all, ever), I watched the first episode of season 2 of Severance and thought about Lynch's legacy. This show, this strange, funny, inexplicable show, really arises from what Lynch started on television with Twin Peaks. Anyway, Severance continues to be great, and for that I am happy.

Weird week. There was some illness in the house--not mine, and not bad, just run-of-the-mill--and I was in an unrelated mood. Not angry, not sad, but some combination of the two that I can probably explain as my inability to completely filter news out of my life. I try. It's not good for me. My entire adult life I've compulsively wanted to know everything that was going on in the world, and now I know that I can no longer do that without seriously affecting my mental health. I'm trying to keep it out but it's very hard (and a privilege, I know).

And so, I watched more episodes of The Repair Shop and I watched some old movies on Tubi. I watched The Fortune Cookie (middling Billy Wilder; on par with Kiss Me Stupid) and Cast a Dark Shadow (Dirk Bogarde is very good, appropriately smarmy) and some very, very minor British Bs I can't even remember.

I read an early Nabokov, The Luzhin Defense. I liked it, mostly. The prose was, of course, very good, but I did not like Luzhin and he only became mildly interesting when a woman falls in love with him. I questioned her ability to love him for a while, and then not. And then the last quarter or so of the book turned nightmarish and I figured that was the way it was going to go the whole time. It made me sad.

I had to pick a new book to read and I had Elizabeth Rush's The Quickening on my Kindle and I started it but I don't know if I'm in the right headspace for a book that's essentially about our steady descent into climate catastrophe. I'm setting it aside for a bit and reading The Left Hand of Darkness, which I have, inexplicably, never read. I got a very nice, old paperback copy on eBay.

Between what was and what will be stands James Tiberius Kirk, in all his fractured patchwork glory. Because saving the Federation was only the beginning.

This fic has been on my to-do list for a long time, and serendipitously got pushed up for me to do RIGHT NOW because I needed a fic I could use to demonstrate layering boards for cutouts for a class @pleasantboatpress and I taught for Binderary. @finalfrontierpublishing had a great typeset, so I rushed to get the text ready enough for the class demo that I could start the cover... and then things got out of hand. Whoops.

I started with a basic circle cutout for the globe, which then grew a secondary layer for me to sandwich copper wires into. Atlas got printed onto marbled paper and added in on top. Then I developed a plan to have the moon-earth orbits, etc on the cover...

...and I needed a sun & I had this awesome paper I decided to use for endpapers, so we get a stupid complicated paper inset too...

...and I had been meaning to try out French double core endbands so why not do those in the colors of the earth from space...

Annnnnd then I was going to a box-making class & this is the kind of delicate that kinda needs one. so. here we are!

bonus: that art peep in the background is a super awesome metal print by @natureintheory

bonus bonus: cutting out the sun, and the cardstock layer goes under the bookcloth to create the indents that the pieces of the sun fit into like a puzzle

materials notes: colibri uran bookcloth, extremely delicate handmade Japanese paper for endpapers (did an adapted form of made endpapers) that i think? is from Itoya?, marbled jute paper for Atlas + globe, copper wire, copper acrylic ink for the edge, silver + rose gold foil applied with handheld foil quill pen, japanese hand-sewing silk for endbands.
