Didn't post last week because I hadn't watched or read a single thing during the fires that wasn't the local news, and it was horrifying.

And so, this week, I finally finished up Michelle Zauner's Crying in H Mart and depressed myself all over again. It's a good book. I feel everything she's laying down, but as someone whose mother is getting older (she's still, thankfully, in wonderful shape and healthy) I really took it to heart. It explores mother/daughter relationships, bi-ethnic identities, and mortality (and food!!) with such skill... and I just related a little too hard.

I also watched Evil Does Not Exist. Slow, meditative, doesn't get you until the last few minutes and then you're still still wondering what you just watched. I watched an interview with Ryusuke Hamaguchi and he talked about how he'd come up with the movie as an exercise, as a concept piece developed with the film's composer for one of her art installations. I wouldn't have known that going in but in retrospect it makes sense. He indulges a little too much sometimes, but because his actors aren't all professional actors, there's something that's still naturalistic there. It was another one I was left ruminating on, and which didn't exactly lift my mood.

Then, yesterday, while I was still grieving David Lynch (I didn't think it would hit me this hard; I didn't think about his demise at all, ever), I watched the first episode of season 2 of Severance and thought about Lynch's legacy. This show, this strange, funny, inexplicable show, really arises from what Lynch started on television with Twin Peaks. Anyway, Severance continues to be great, and for that I am happy.

Films in 2025:

I never have a list of the movies I've watched in a year, and wouldn't it be nice? Let's see if I can keep this up. I have a letterboxed but god knows I never use it.

So far, I've watched a couple of flicks off Criterion's Love in Disguise theme for January. New to me were The Major and the Minor, an absolutely baffling farce starring Ginger Rogers and Ray Milland. Ginger needs to get out of New York and doesn't have the money for the full price train fare back to Iowa. Her solution? Dress up as a twelve year old girl. She gets caught smoking, runs away from the conductors, and ends up in Ray Milland's compartment. Hilarity? and ROMANCE?? ensue. (I whispered what the fuck a lot while watching this.)

A more appropriate relationship arises from Cary Grant and Sylvia Sidney's collaboration in 30-Day Princess (1934), a sweet little thing involving Silvia's actress protagonist signing up for the role of a lifetime. Grant plays a newspaper owner trying to botch an impoverished, tiny, fictional European country's bond issuance. None of this matters. Silvia Sidney is very pretty, and if Cary Grant isn't yet in his charming prime, he's approaching it. This was co-written by Preston Sturges, which explains a lot.

Fandom is one of the only safe spaces for mental escapism that some people have right now, and fear mongering and spreading misinformation is helping no one. Fanfiction is not going to disappear off the internet tomorrow.

I understand that a geriatric orange beast winning the election is very upsetting and it has led to a lot of people mentally spiralling into doomsday scenarios, but the last thing that fucking cheeto is coming for is your fanfiction. AO3 is so fucking low priority - it's not even on their radar.

And even though you consider smut to be porn, by most legal definitions, it's not. If they would try to institute a porn ban (which would be incredibly stupid and would probably upset a lot of old Republican white men anyway, and we all know they don't do things that go against their own personal interests) - they would be going after visual media. Not written media. And while Project 2025 does talk about banning books, it speaks about banning mass produced, widespread books with certain subjects in them - not some indie fanfic with fisting with 100 hits on AO3.

The fact that AO3 is a non-profit and does not make any money and does not have any ads is usually what protects us in these legal situations. And like I said - scrubbing 10,000 gay Destiel fics from the internet forever is incredibly low priority (likely not a priority at all) for the Trump administration.

So don't panic download every fanfiction you've ever read, and please don't panic if you don't have 7 hard drives to download all of AO3 onto. Everyone is just upset about the results of the election and apt to believe that the world is going to change overnight, but it won't. If (and that is a big fat IF) the internet will be censored (which will be damn near impossible to do) and IF the future of fanfiction will be jeopardized, we will have more warning to prepare before it happens.
