I cannot believe this fandom was so blindsided by the gay drama that we missed the obvious lore drop of Sedna hinting at the greater worldbuilding of Inuit Mythology implied at the end of the season with Niko and all the other afterlife folklore season 2 may explore

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sedna, the Sea Goddess of Inuit mythology, reigns over the icy waters of the Arctic seas with power and grace. She is a complex and enigmatic deity, embodying both the nurturing embrace and the fierce wrath of the ocean depths. Revered by the Inuit people as the mistress of marine animals and the keeper of the sea's bounty, Sedna holds sway over the delicate balance between humanity and the natural world. Her mythic tales speak of transformation, sacrifice, and the inexorable cycles of life and death. Often depicted as a beautiful maiden with long flowing hair, Sedna's presence is both captivating and formidable, reminding mortals of the awe-inspiring majesty of the sea and the mysteries that lie beneath its surface.

"Like the ocean's tide, healing comes in waves. Allow yourself to ride the currents of grief, knowing that calm waters lie ahead."
"With every tear shed, let the sea goddess cradle your heart and whisper words of comfort. She understands the ebb and flow of pain, and she will guide you to the shores of peace."
"Healing begins with acceptance. Surrender to the healing waters within, and let them cleanse your spirit of all that no longer serves you. From the depths of despair, rise renewed and whole."

When Ester first walks up to crystal in episode one. It's creepy and helped establish her as a villain. However, the whole "I really like girls" line and the way she got close to Crystal had me like, "Is she trying to give Crystal a wlw awakening?" They also have a few parallels to Edwin and the Cat King if you squint, though with the context of Ester's hobbies (torture, murder, kidnapping, etc.), and the fact that Crystal is 16 (with no leeway on the whole "I died in 1916, so I'm actually way older than I look" type stuff), it's a lot creepier and also less obvious if Ester is trying to seduce Crystal at all or if she's solely on the "let's get this young girl on my snake's menu" angle.
That said, I think it would be cool if it was part of an arc for Crystal sort of like the Cat King was for Edwin, so the show could do something like:
season 1 is Edwin's gay awakening,
season 2 is Charles' bi awakening,
season 3 is Crystal's bi (Pan? Something else?) awakening,
season 4 is Monty trying to learn more about the whole human thing (and maybe getting re-introduced to the cat king? *wink wink*),
season 5 is Niko being happy all her friends are out and happy and maybe discovering her crush on Crystal and/or discovering she's maybe ace(?),
season 6 is Jenny finding love with someone who won't do the old Stalk and Stab maneuver,
season 7 is the night nurse being visited by Kashi and starting something there,
then a bunch more seasons with more characters that get introduced throughout the show,
then finally the last season is Tragic Mick becoming a walrus again and reuniting with Sedna and his family in the sea.
And each episode obviously has a different case getting solved, and at some point, Niko drags EVERYONE to a Pride festival and that's essentially the beach episode (aside from the actual beach episode that they would also have or so help me-)

I think Niko should come back from her trip to the snowy spirit realm or wherever she is with the ability to turn into a polar bear because of the bear luck charm (And then she helps Tragic Mick turn into a walrus again because you never know when the good you do comes around)
But mostly I just think it would be very good for everyone to get into trouble and Niko to be dressed in her amazing adorable outfits and underestimated by everybody and then suddenly there's a fuck off big giant bear there instead

My analysis of the Sedna scene in Episode 6 of Dead Boy Detectives
(as a mythology nerd)
The myth of Sedna was my introduction to Inuit mythology so it has a very special place in my heart and because of that I'm going to try my best to give people a better understanding of her story!
Since Sedna has multiple different "origin stories" so I'm just going to focus on the most popular one(?) and the one I know the best
Also, I understand that this is a repurposing of the myth and that obviously there's going to be some changes for time and story reasons and that this scene wasn't meant to be a lesson, but this is all in good fun and I'm going to analyze it from that lens anyway :>
It's important to note that considering the fact that Inuit mythology is far less popular than other mythologies, there's a lot less information surrounding and what is there is is a lot more vague
With all that being said, let's jump in!(...get it?)
------------------------
"One day, long, long ago, a terrible storm raged over land and sea. A girl and her father were in peril."
While this definitely isn't inaccurate, it leaves a lot of context out. So let's start at the very beginning:
Sedna was a beautiful young woman and a skilled huntress. As such, she received many marriage proposals but refused every last one. Her father eventually grew frustrated by this so when one day, a mysterious hunter arrived at the village, Sedna's father eagerly offered him his daughter's hand. Sedna consented as the hunter promised to provide her and her family with meat and furs. Not long after they married, her new husband whisked her off to an isolated island where he revealed that he was, in fact, not a man but a bird(crazy right?). Now, Sedna was very understandably very unhappy on the island. Not only had she been tricked but since her husband was a bird, he couldn't exactly provide the meat and furs he promised. Instead, she was forced to eat the fish he caught everyday. Things took a turn when Sedna's father decided to visit her on the island(the reason is rather unclear but I believe there's a variation where her screams and wails of agony were so loud that they reached her old home which was what what prompted her father to go check on her and one where he simply wanted to see her again). After finding out that he'd been fooled and learning of Sedna's current situation, her father killed his son-in-law and took Sedna back on his boat.
"The man thought if he sacrificed his daughter, he may be saved by the greater gods."
If you think his motivation for murdering his daughter seems a bit far-fetched, we're in the same boat(...get it?). His reasoning in the original myth makes a bit more sense. See, what happened in the original was that Sedna's father thought sacrificing her would save him because her husband's bird family/friends being angered by his death, followed the two to sea and began beating their wings really hard, causing the storm. He thought that by sacrificing the "cause" of their loved one's death, they'd be appeased and forgo flapping their wings.
[Her father throws her overboard, Sedna clutches onto the side of the boat, and he proceeds to chop her fingers off by slamming his paddle on them repeatedly.]
I'd have no nothing to say about this bit if not for the use of the paddle. In the versions I've read, he always uses a knife to cut them off. Perhaps a version where he used a paddle exists, but if there is, I haven't heard it.
"But seeing such cruelty, the great gods forsook the father, and took pity on the girl, turning her into Sedna, the goddess of the sea."
I'm definitely overthinking this but the use of the word great here confuses me because if we take the "great" as meaning considerably above average in terms of domaninance, I'm not exactly sure who Mick is referring to because there isn't really a divine ruler in Inuit mythology? Most of the gods were simply more powerful spirits. The Inuits believed the world was created by a raven(or a raven-man or a raven with a man inside or a raven who could turn into a man, it really depends). Sometimes he's depicted as trickster with a penchant for mischief while other times he's depicted as a compassionate creator and lover of the world. Either way, I don't think he's really regarded as the leader? I've heard some stories where Anguta(god of death and the underworld) is the creator and supreme being, but I doubt he's the great god being referred to as he's sometimes attributed to being Sedna's father and the one who kills her in other versions of her story which would make him turning her into a goddess in this one a bit odd. Chances are, I'm reading too much into this and they simply chose to incorporate "great" as a way to show they're worthy of respect, but it's still interesting to think about!
"And on that day, my brothers and sisters were born."
10/10. No notes. Sedna sinks into the bottom of the ocean and her fingers become all the sea's mammals just like in the original.
------------------------
That's all I have to say, I think. Overall, this exercise was really fun. Please let me know if I shared any incorrect information. I look forward to doing more analyses in the future!

SEDNA IN YOUR ASTROLOGY CHART. Where is your Transformation and Sensitivity?
Tumblr media
In astrology, Sedna is a relatively recently discovered trans-Neptunian dwarf planet. Its astrological interpretation is still evolving, but it's often associated with deep emotions, trauma, transformation, and issues related to sustainability and ecology.
When Sedna is placed in specific houses in an astrological chart, its influence can vary depending on the individual's birth chart and the aspects it makes to other planets. Here's a brief overview of how Sedna might manifest in each house:
First House: Sedna in the first house could indicate a deep sensitivity and emotional intensity that is very personal to the individual. They may have a strong sense of self-awareness and may experience profound transformations in their identity throughout life.
Second House: In the second house, Sedna may influence the individual's values and possessions, possibly bringing issues related to material security and sustainability to the forefront of their concerns.
Third House: Sedna in the third house might indicate intense communication styles, deep thinking, and perhaps issues related to siblings or the local community that need to be addressed and transformed.
Fourth House: With Sedna in the fourth house, there could be deep-seated emotional issues related to family, home, and roots. Transformations in these areas may be significant throughout life.
Fifth House: Sedna in the fifth house may suggest intense creativity, romantic experiences, or issues related to children that need to be transformed or healed.
Sixth House: In the sixth house, Sedna could indicate deep-seated issues related to health, work, and daily routines. There may be a need for transformation and healing in these areas.
Seventh House: With Sedna in the seventh house, there may be intense experiences in relationships, partnerships, and one-on-one interactions. Transformative experiences through partnerships are likely.
Eighth House: Sedna in the eighth house could indicate intense experiences related to shared resources, intimacy, and transformation. Issues related to trust and vulnerability may arise.
Ninth House: In the ninth house, Sedna may bring deep spiritual or philosophical insights and experiences related to travel, higher education, and belief systems.
Tenth House: Sedna in the tenth house could indicate intense experiences related to career, public image, and authority figures. There may be a need for transformation and healing in these areas.
Eleventh House: With Sedna in the eleventh house, there may be intense experiences related to friendships, groups, and social causes. Issues related to social justice and humanitarianism may be highlighted.
Twelfth House: Sedna in the twelfth house may indicate deep-seated issues related to the subconscious, spirituality, and hidden enemies. There may be a need for healing and transformation on a deeply spiritual level.
Examples:
Angelina Jolie: If Sedna were in Angelina Jolie's first house, it could contribute to her intense and transformative public image, as well as her deep emotional connections to humanitarian causes and family.
Leonardo DiCaprio: With Sedna in the eighth house, Leonardo DiCaprio might experience deep emotional transformations in his personal relationships and career pursuits, especially concerning environmental activism (a cause he's well known for).
Beyoncé Knowles: If Sedna were in Beyoncé's seventh house, it could indicate intense and transformative experiences within her relationships and partnerships, both personally and professionally.
Remember, the interpretation of Sedna in the houses can vary widely depending on the individual's unique birth chart and the aspects it makes to other planets and points. Consulting with a professional astrologer can provide more personalized insights.

Finally, after a slow night at work and much ruminating, I hereby present my own True-Detective-Night-Country world-famous ramble stew. Tipping my non-existent hat to one Mr @rhavewellyarnbag
Something something Sedna of the many names, Arnarquagsag, Nerivik, Nuliajuk, the one who would not marry, the wife of all.
What's you name, girl?
Navarro, Eve, Angie, Evangeline, Missy, your mother never told you your real name (the one of the Real People) and some think you have forgotten it.
Sedna of the many names many stories Arctic wide, Alaska to Greenland, many stories and in all of them she lives under the sea, in all of them she ends up there because of her father.
Her mother? sometimes a shaman (voices. episodes.) sometimes entirely absent from the narrative (died in chilbirth), sometimes a background character following her husband.
Her father? oh, he always throws her in the sea, sometimes in a panic, sometimes in a rage. She would not marry the man he told her to.
Why?
Well, is that the right question?
She would not marry the man he told her to, because she was already married to her dog who was a man, a shapeshifter, so they kept it in secret.
So many secrets here... do we trust Qavviq the dog-man, the home-brewer? or is he gonna die a terrible death?
i dunno, man. Annie keeping it secret. Danvers keeping it secret. But Everyone here knows.
Sedna whose fingers were cut went she went overboard and she tried to hold on to her father's kayak. Sometimes her whole hands, bit by bit.
So many fathers here, too. Hank, raised by an animal to act like an animal. His son trying to be better than him. The son's son drawing the woman with no hands, no fingers, spooking his father.
What is it with white people getting spooked about other people's religion? Not me, i was raised catholic. A lady with no fingers is no big deal. But maybe i mean white-white. Not opening that particular can of worms right now.
Oh and of course Travis. Fucking Travis Cohle. And his little interpretive dance. That was a man drowning. Or several. Didn't Lund cough up some filthy water when he woke up corpsicled? Cause of death: Spooketh. But also maybe drowned.
The lady under the sea, the lady with no fingers, cannot untangle her hair. Her hair traps the marine animals and she gets agitated and there is storm and famine. Her hair under the sea, her hair maybe like the sea, and who hasn't dyed their hair sea-blue, sea-green, when they missed so much? i have. Wear the monster's face, wear her hair, whatever you can manage.
The lady with the sea-hair beautifully painted on the door to the warehouse where the people gather. And the people are pissed.
Something in the water, and no one seems to be asking questions. Not even the wrong ones. Tsalal is the mine is the thing under the ice, now she's awake and y'all done fucked up.
The lady with no fingers that lives under the sea gets pissed off sometimes. Main thing driving her mad is greed and ungratefulness, apparently. Those who take more than they need and those who do not honor their prey. The seals have souls, and so do the whales and the walruses. Those are Sedna’s children, not exactly like children, born from her chopped fingers like Eve from Adam’s rib.
Sedna (90377 Sedna) is also a dwarf planet hanging around Ceres. This season feels like the Belt. As oppresive as S1 made Louisiana look (humid, hot, that heavy heavy sky) this creeps me out more. What's worse, air thick with miasma or no air at all? Women walking out to the dark, a tiny circle of light and then the vast nothing. Very cosmic horror. Also i miss Naomi Nagata and i miss Camina Drummer. Funny that Danvers' kid was named Holden. But i digress.
You know how scientists are, naming stuff after goddesses. Pieces of rock, sometimes lifeforms. She's awake alright.
Who are you, girl? Eve? An angel? I am reminded too that Evangelion means Good News. Are you catholic, Navarro? Was your father catholic? What did he drink?
Something in the water, something in the ice. Crabs are bottom feeders, aren't they? How fucked up is an ecosystem where the carrion-eaters die off? Maybe stuff isn't dying at the rate it should. Caribou spook relatively easy, but maybe they know something we don't, too. Micro earthquakes and magnetic fields and shit. Guess we’ll find out.
