Santa with a difference!
When Ganesha played secret Santa
Who is Santa Claus? Santa is a kind, fat, jovial old man who brings gifts for children on Christmas. Little children are enamoured by the mascot dressed in red and white who comes riding on a sleigh. Parents pamper their children with gifts in the guise of Santa. When children grow up, they realise that Santa is not a real guy. The moment of realisation for a child may be heart breaking; the make-believe world may be shattered but soon there is a moment of awakening and gratitude towards those who have played Santa and been the harbingers of joy. And suddenly there is an eagerness to become the magical gift-giving Santa, because there is great joy in giving! Truly all grandparents, parents, uncles, aunts, cousins etc. who bring gifts for children are Santa in their own right.
The spirit of giving, is one of the most beautiful traits of our persona. We may give gifts, money, knowledge, love, care or even just time! Sharing happiness, increases it manifold; sharing grief decreases it aplenty. Now that the Christmas break is here, many of those who have empty nests, are waiting for the homecoming of their NRI off springs. These NRIs come home loaded with gifts for aged parents and siblings. They are verily our version of Santa Claus!
Last year our children along with cousins and friends, played their own version of the popular game ‘Secret Santa’; and renamed it ‘Secret Ganesha’! Well! Why not? In this age of globalisation, when Haldi wala doodh is going places as Turmeric Latte and the humble Golgappe have reached Five star hotel menus as ‘Puffed semolina crispies filled with spicy potatoes and chickpeas, filled with shots of tangy flavoured water’; why can’t we innovate and have a Secret Ganesha?
Well! I was impressed by the thoughtful gifts that popped out of Secret Ganesha’s bag of goodies. There were warm socks, mittens, caps, chocolates, cosy pyjamas etc. What followed was a quiz about the names of Ganesha, his parents, siblings, the reasons for his long nose and big tummy … And everyone had a riot! The evening was spent chatting about Ganesha and Santa! I smiled … Bhagwan Baba always said that it’s important to respect all religions while being firmly rooted in our own.
He said, “There is only one religion, the religion of Love; There is only one language, the language of the Heart; There is only one caste, the caste of Humanity; There is only one God, He is Omnipresent.”
One of the NRI children said that she’d never had so much fun before … Secret Ganesha was a superhit! Her wistful expression as she hugged her cousins, coupled with tears of longing in her mother’s eyes, reminded me of a couplet,
“Lahu ke thae jo rishte, unhe chod ke aa gaye;
sukoon aankhon ke saamne tha, mooh mod ke aagaye.
Khazaane lut rahe thae, maa baap ki chaanv mein;
hum kaudiyon ki khaatir, ghar chod ke aagaye!”
Starting this December, besides the usual NRIs trotting homewards, India will be hosting the G-20. Nearly 200 meetings of ministers and officials of the G-20 nations at 50 plus venues shall bring opportunities to showcase the cultural milieu of the country. G-20 delegates shall be gifted local products, so local handicrafts and products will be extensively promoted. The theme of India’s G-20 Presidency is, ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ or ‘One Earth · One Family · One Future’. And that resonates with what Baba says - one religion, one language, one caste … and all this because we belong to the family of one God!
Chandigarh too shall be spruced up to host delegates from over 40 countries for two meetings of G-20 in January and March 2023. The Sukhna Lake and Rock Garden shall host cultural events. The city beautiful shall also get its share from Secret Ganesha’s bag of goodies!
If you’d like to share your thoughts about this please leave a message in the comments section below. I would be happy to see it!

Writing Notes: Mystical Items & Objects
Examples in Mythology and Literature
Pandora's Box
The god Prometheus stole fire from heaven to give to the human race, which originally consisted only of men
To punish humanity, the other gods created the first woman, the beautiful Pandora
As a gift, Zeus gave her a box, which she was told never to open
However, as soon as he was out of sight she took off the lid, and out swarmed all the troubles of the world, never to be recaptured
Only Hope was left in the box, stuck under the lid
Anything that looks ordinary but may produce unpredictable harmful results can thus be called a Pandora's box
Hermes' Winged Sandals
Also called the Talaria of Mercury
Are winged sandals, a symbol of the Greek messenger god Hermes (Mercury)
They were said to be made by the god Hephaestus of imperishable gold and they flew the god as swift as any bird
Cintamani Stone
Also referred to as the Chintamani
A wish-fulfilling stone that features across both Hindu and Buddhist religions
The stone features as one of many Mani Jewel (i.e., several gems that are mentioned prominently in Buddhist literature) images that can be found in the scripture of Buddhism
In Hinduism, the stone is connected to the gods Ganesha and Vishnu
Usually, it is depicted as a jewel in Vishnu’s possession known as the Kaustubha
The Kaustubha acts as a sign of divine authority
Arcane Artifacts & Objects
Offer a gateway between time past and time present, bringing layers of ancient history and new-world intrigue to a narrative
Such items are typically represented in fiction as works of long-lost knowledge, primordial features or landmarks, and curious objects of mysterious origin
Often lying dormant until the pivotal moment of discovery, these items invite characters and readers alike into a dance with the unknown
Examples: Necronomicon, Genie's Bottle
Necronomicon
Also referred to as the Book of the Dead
It appears in stories by H.P. Lovecraft
A dark grimoire (i.e., a magician's manual for invoking demons and the spirits of the dead) of forbidden knowledge
Used to open gateways of unearthly powers and cosmic horrors
Genie's Bottle
The classic magical item from mythology, also featured in Aladdin
A vessel of wish fulfillment that often leads to dramatic and unexpected consequences
Doorways & Portals
Doorways in fiction serve as gateways between worlds, dimensions, or states of reality, providing characters with universe-hopping capabilities and genre-defying journeys
These portals, whether physical structures or fantastical mechanisms, open up limitless storytelling possibilities, allowing for sudden shifts in setting and introducing elements of surprise and surrealism
Examples:
C.S. Lewis' wardrobe in The Chronicles of Narnia serves as a secret portal to a fantasy world, bridging the mundane with the fantastical
The eponymous board game in Jumanji transports its players into a wild and perilous jungle adventure, wrenching them from the safety of their living room
Jewelry, Gems, and Garments
Along with other various accessories, these serve several narrative functions, from symbolizing power and status to bestowing unique abilities upon their wearers
These items can act as plot catalysts (i.e. MacGuffins), embody character traits, or hold deep cultural or magical significance within a story’s world
Example: The Amulet of Mara in Skyrim not only reduces the cost of Restoration spells but also unlocks marriage options for the player, integrating gameplay with the narrative
Legendary Objects of Power
Carry with them stories of grandeur and lore, passed down through generations and intertwined with the fates of those who wield them
These are the objects that make or break worlds, bestow immense strength, and are frequently considered among the most powerful items in fiction
Example: Though it's never actually been seen, the Kusanagi Sword from Japanese folklore is a fabled sword that represents valor, said to be endowed with divine powers
Machinery and Technologies
Stretch the boundaries of physics and logic to offer a glimpse into what could be possible in alternate or future universes
These innovations, whether grounded in current science or verging on the fantastical, propel narratives forward and deepen the complexity of the story’s world
Writers can leverage these technological wonders to enhance their storytelling, using them to explore themes of power, ethics, and the human relationship with technology
Example: The body shields in Dune generate a protective forcefield around the wearer—advanced technology that current militaries can only dream of
Mundane Everyday Items
Possess extraordinary storytelling potential to transform the unassuming into the unforgettable
Seemingly ordinary, these objects can surprise both characters and readers, unveiling hidden depths and abilities when least expected
These seemingly mundane objects could fall into unsuspecting hands and create chaos or catalyze a hero’s journey
Additionally, they might only reveal their true nature to those worthy or capable of wielding their power, which can set the stage for narratives that are centered around discovery and mastery
Example: Oscar Wilde’s Portrait of Dorian Grey presents art as a vessel for dark magic, encapsulating the protagonist’s sins while he remains untouched by time

Round 6, Day 2 - Pretender versus MoonCancer
The doorbell rang.
"If that's an enemy, I'm going to go freaking berserk. I haven't even had a chance to boot up my computer yet."
The statue slid over to the door, as it opened.
"Hello, my Masters told me to come start a fight with y--"
"GO AWAYYYYYYY!"
A mighty blow with the strength of a freight train was swung from the elephant god, the fae king barely dodging out of the way as the shockwave caused the ground to shudder and rumble. In an attempt to get away, the Pretender fled to more open ground, as the MoonCancer slowly stalked towards him- fuming.
"Just… leave… me… alone! I swear-- I got summoned who Masters who want to lounge around and hang out with me! People who want to spend time with me! This is the closest thing to 'friendship' I've had in a depressingly long time! And I can't take advantage of it, because you all come in and ruin it! 'Oooh, you're such a threat', 'Oooh, you're boring so you should die', 'Oooh, stab her and kill her and beat her up', 'Oooh, can we use you as our punching bag?'-- I'm sick of it!"
"So, Masters, you know-- in literature, the number 'three' is often given importance. For a number of reasons we don't have time to talk about now, but long story short, big things tend to happen at 'number three'--"
The MoonCancer finally caught up, her body radiating pure divine magic.
"Fine! You wanna keep poking the god-- you got it! I'll use my divine might to send out a real warning! You're obstacles in the way of my chill-out time, so I'll just remove you, dammit!"
"That's just to say, Masters… I'm getting the feeling we're unlucky number three… and we woke the sleeping bear-- or, uh, elephant?"
The Servant boosts are...
Oberon: +3%
Ganesha: +6%
Ganesha gains +1 'Prosperity'! Due to being attacked, her skills will reset at the end of the round!
Servant Skills:
Oberon (Pretender)
Evening Shroud (EX Rank) - In the cover of night, even the most unconfident warriors can at least feign greatness. When engaged in a Free-for-All, gain a +3% boost.
Morning Lark (EX Rank) - As morning comes, as does a boost in morale. Demerits against Oberon are reduced in effectiveness by 3%, and he gains a +3% boost in one-on-one battles.
A Midsummer Night's Dream (EX Rank): Rather than just reducing the effectiveness of Servant-imposed demerits, he is immune to them entirely. Additionally, the conditions for his secret skill are revealed as such:
Survive for 3 rounds. (Achieved)
Take 1 wound. (Achieved)
Win 1st place in a Free-for-All.
Win in a One-on-One.
T■■■ N■■■ D■■■■■■■■■■ (???) - One condition met (Survive 3 rounds, take 1 wound). Other conditions not met (2/4 remaining).
Ganesha (MoonCancer)
Vinayaka (EX Rank): When 'Playing Defensively' gain a +5% bonus to scores, and you cannot be caught off guard. If you are unbothered, then this increases by 1% each time you are not attacked, resetting back to 5% once you're engaged in combat. However, this negates the inherent MoonCancer trait of ‘being unable to be targeted while Playing Defensively’. (Current boost: +6%)
Broken Tusk (B Rank): When engaged in a 1-on-1 confrontation (while not Playing Defensively), gain a +3% boost. Additionally, apply the MoonCancer Class Trait of 'not taking damage if there's a 3% difference in scores' to 1-on-1 battles as well. If Ganesha has been ‘Playing Defensively’ uninterrupted for 3 or more turns (in a row), when she goes on the offense, her attack bonus increases from 3% to 6% for that specific round. (Current defensive turn count: 0)
Prosperous Business (A Rank): If you're trying to build up your skills Playing Defensively and end up attacked, earn 'Prosperity'. Baseline +1 Prosperity, and an additional +1 per 5% you're victorious over your enemy. Earned 'Prosperity' can be spent during your preparation phase for rewards, or saved for more potent rewards later.

I'm on the train, heading up to London for my chemo, happily writing Destiel fanfic. Which makes me wonder, is there anyone else on the train into Destiel? Into fanfic, even? I hope so! If not, they don't know what they're missing!
I've started another installment of Secret Flowers, this one beginning with Dean talking to the daffodils and thinking about Doris Day.
I'm also in the middle of an AU kidfic, told from Charlie's POV, inspired by a certain pig-tailed con photo. I need to draw my version of it to illustrate my story. You can't really draw on the train, though. I've tried it. It's too wobbly.
Anyway, here's a bit of my Charlie-fic, which is as yet untitled:
“Hey, Charlie?”
She closed her eyes and sent a quick prayer to Ganesha, who she’d recently come across in a solo expedition into the humanities section of the local library and thought was a pretty cool kind of guy. Then she took a firm grip on her trusty pencil-lance and sat up, smiling brightly and, she hoped, unattractively.
“Dean!”
His lips wobbled, like he thought he should smile back, but cool, tough-guys didn’t smile. The potential smile got diverted into a choking splutter and his face turned bright red. Oh no. No. Please don’t, Dean.
He shifted awkwardly against the metal frame, which must be digging into his back.
“Uh, so…” One hand made a bit for freedom from his crossed arms. It rubbed the back of his neck and then scratched through his hair, which was a bit longer and more floppy than Dean’s usual short spikes. “Um…yeah, so, uh…”
This was torture. If he was going to declare undying love, he should just spit it out.
“So, uh…” Dean’s throat bobbed as he swallowed hard. And then there was a blurting mix of maybe ten or so mashed-up syllables, with an uptick at the end to show it was a question.
Charlie stared at him. “What?”
Dean’s eyes darted from the dusty ground to hers and back again. He took a deep breath and then ran through his word-mess again, just marginally slower.
“Whatd’youdoifyouthinkyoulikesomeone?”
Charlie ran the jumble through her mind again - slower, like re-inputting a line of code with the correct syntax.
“You like someone?”
He shrugged. “I dunno. Yeah, I guess.”
“Like like like?”
“What?”
“Sorry. I mean, the more than friends kind of like.”
His mouth twisted, his eyes darted around the playground and he ran a hand over his head, totally messing up his hair.
“Yeah.” His voice was a strangled husk of its usual self. “I think.”

Monster Hunter concepts Pt. 8: the Fated Four
I think it would be cool to talk about more popular monsters, so today I will talk about these four peak design monsters that were introduced in Monster Hunter Generations: The Fated Four. While each one has a different theme, they are inherently part of the same core concept and thus must be explained collectively. I will try to keep it brief, but each monster is conceptually very rich so it will be difficult!
So what exactly are the Fated Four? Well as you may know, MHGen is the portable game of the Fourth generation, which started with MH4. MHGen was conceived as a celebration of the saga and its core theme is the number four: four villages, four hunting styles, and of course, four flagships: the scorching blade Glavenus, the lightning rebel Astalos, the immovable mountain god Gammoth, and the bewitching dance Mizutsune. Being defined as a group, each one of these monsters is intended to embody both a generation and a stereotypical archetype in a "hero team" (think of the Power Rangers, sorta).
Firstly we got Astalos, which is the rebel of the group, its color is green. Astalos embodies the First Generation being a Flying Wyvern and being found in the Forest and Hills (now Verdant Hills) near Kokoto, the village from the very first Monster Hunter. Its design is quite amazing, as it combines insect traits, with iridescent, semitranslucent wings, spiky legs and an earwig-like tail, its different insect-like parts charge with electricity as it attacks, a perfect reflection of its energetic and agressive nature. Its name in english comes from Astrapi (lightning in Greek) and -los to indicate it's the rival of Rathalos, which is much worse than its Japanese name Raizekusu (or Raizex for friends) which sounds way cooler, and is a combination of 雷 rai (thunder) and Insekt, the german word for, well, insect.
Secondly we got Gammoth, which is the big guy, the champion of the group, its color is blue. It embodies the Second Generation as a Fanged Beast, a class introduced in said generation, and is found in the Snowy Mountains (now Arctic Ridge) near Pokke, the village of MH Freedom 2 and Freedom Unite. This massive behemoth is based on a mammoth and also combines beasts from Greek mythology like hecatoncheires and cyclops, inspiring its weird armored head and and eye-like markings of its shoulders. Fight wise it covers its legs with snow and then tries to crush its enemies, as well as using its trunk as a versatile ranged weapon, however due to its enormous size with barely any back defense, its fight is possibly the easiest of the four. Lore confirms that its deep hatred for Tigrex is a result from childhood trauma (amazing). Its etymology is pretty straightforward, being a combination of the Hindu elephant god Ganesha and mammoth.
Thirdly we have Mizutsune, which is the girl (yes thats an archetype) of the group, its color is pink (cuz girl!!!!). It embodies the Third Generation as a Leviathan, a class first seen in our beloved wet MH3, and inhabits the Misty Peaks near Yukumo, which had never appeared in the west because it was only featured in MH Portable 3rd. This monster combines different traits from foxes, weasels, carps/goldenfish and snakes to create a really beautiful design. Mizutsune fights by secreting a soap-like substance to create bubbles, this slippery foam increases its movility while hindering that of its rivals, its gracefulness and agility allow it to face even powerful threats like Zinogre, using its giant brush-like tail as main weapon. Its etymology is pretty obvious if you are a bit of a weeb, "Mizutsune" is a combination of the Japanese words for water 水 mizu and fox 狐 kitsune, originally its Japanese name is Tamamitsune, which uses Tamamo-no-Mae, the legendary woman from the Japanese fairytale of the same name, instead of water.
And lastly we got Glavenus! The leader of the group obviously, its color is red, altho at first glance it may appear to be blue. Surprisingly, Glavenus is not the first fire-breathing Brute Wyvern that uses its tail as a sword, if you know your monsters you will know that Abiorugu from MH Frontier, while completely different, has these core traits too. In any case, Glavenus is still a really good design, who doesn't love a Carnotaurus with a giant blade as a tail that lights up like a 1000 degree knife? Its flame-shaped shell and horns also become red when enraged which give it a very fiery look, everything about its design screams fire. Interestingly, it is also mentioned in interviews that Glavenus was intended to be a land Rathalos, which would explain why it hates Rathian so much. Despite all of this, I still find odd that the monster that is supposed to embody the Fourth Generation is not from a class introduced in it (we need more Snake Wyverns!), overall it's the only monster in the group that does not really embody its generation all that well, but that's fine, we still love the top contender of the Jurassic Frontier (I guess Cretaceous Frontier was too long). In terms of etymology, "Glavenus" is a combination of the latin words Gladius (blade) and Fervens (burning) plus -saurus (cuz it's a dinosaur), while in Japanese Dinobarudo is a combination of Dinosaur, Nova and Halberd.
So that is all! Four banger monsters in one go, which one is your favorite? Do you also pray every night for Gammoth to return in the future or that it will remain forgotten like Gigginox? I really hope people find these ramblings interesting lol

if you were a deity, what would be your domain ?
Wisdom and Knowledge
You are the divine guardian of truths both knowable and unknowable, of all words and languages spoken and unspoken. Much like Death itself, you are perhaps one of the least understood of all deities, and yet the secrets you hold are highly sought after by scientists, philosophers, and theologians alike. The origin of all innovation, your realm is the source of crucial advances in architecture, agriculture, political governance, and military strategy which have allowed many civilizations to become a dominant force in the mortal realm. Your domain may also include the forces of magic and mysticism, and many cautionary tales exist among mortals of those who have unwittingly destroyed themselves or lost their minds in the reckless pursuit of mysteries and technology far beyond their comprehension. 𝗤 . if you were a diety, what would be your domain?
wisdom and knowledge. you are the divine guardian of truths both knowable and unknowable, of all words and languages spoken and unspoken. much like death itself, you are perhaps one of the least understood of all deities, and yet the secrets you hold are highly sought after by scientists, philosophers, and theologians alike. the origin of all innovation, your realm is the source of crucial advances in architecture, agriculture, political governance, and military strategy which have allowed many civilizations to become a dominant force in the mortal realm. your domain may also include the forces of magic and mysticism, and many cautionary tales exist among mortals of those who have unwittingly destroyed themselves or lost their minds in the reckless pursuit of mysteries and technology far beyond their comprehension. your mythological equivalents are greece’s athena, egypt’s thoth, mesopotamia’s enki, and india’s ganesha.

Every year, during the autumn months, she returns from her husband’s house in the form of Durga for a few days of rest in the comforting arms of her mother, the village community. Thus the mother of the village transforms into the daughter and is indulged accordingly. She comes with her children, two sons, the strong Kartikeya and the smart Ganesha, and her two daughters, the rich Lakshmi and the talented Saraswati. She complains that her husband, Shiva, does not work and she is left to provide for the family. Her mother empathises with her but reminds her that she chose the man she married; no one forced her to marry a hermit who wanders with dogs and ghosts, lives in crematoriums, and loves narcotics. She is bathed, and clothed, and fed, and entertained with songs and dances. And finally, she is bid farewell, cast into the river, where her image dissolves, as she makes her way back to her husband’s house in faraway snow-capped Mount Kailas.

Thaggu Ke Ladoo: This Sweet Shop in Kanpur Has Been 'Cheating' its Customers, But Why?
The variety of sweets prepared and enjoyed in India is startling and of all, ladoos are probably the most common and also most loved. Ladoos are also considered to be God's beloved sweet offering - be it Lord Ganesha's favourite Motichoor or the famous Besan Ladoo served as prasad at the Tirupati Temple down South. Back in the day, the Coconut Ladoo was packed for warriors and travellers as a symbol of good luck while they embark on their journey. Here's another interesting tale of ladoos that comes from Kanpur - a small, industrial city in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Remember the Abhishek Bachchan and Rani Mukherjee starrer movie Bunty Aur Babli from 2005? The movie was a super hit but it also brought into limelight a small sweet shop in Kanpur called Thaggu ke Ladoo where one of the important scenes of the movie was shot. The sweet shop did enjoy a lot of star attention, but that's not its claim to fame. It has a very fascinating journey that will compel you to pack your bags and head out to explore - just like we did.
Adarsh Pandey, who belongs to the third generation of the family that has been running the sweet shop, tells us, "My grandfather, Ram Avtar Pandey, ran away from his house and landed in Kanpur about 60 years ago. He started selling ladoos on a plate to earn a living and was later inspired to open his own sweet shop. Our shop gained popularity because our ladoos are not like any other normal ladoo. We have a secret recipe that distinguishes us from the others."
What's in the name? So, the word, 'Thaggu' in Hindi comes from the word 'Thug' which means to cheat or a person who cheats you. Now, one wouldn't dare to promote their venture claiming that their intention is to cheat their customers but surprisingly, the gimmick seemed to have worked for Thaggu Ke Ladoo! Over the years, their business has flourished, despite the strange name and their tag line which says - 'Aisa Koi Saga Nahi, Jisko Hamne Thaga Nahi' that literally translates to "There is No Relative or Person Who We Have Not Cheated!" The catchy one-liner became so popular that it was even borrowed by renowned lyricist Gulzar for a song in the movie 'Bunty Aur Babli'. We're curious to know why someone would keep such a risky name for their sweet shop that is sure to drive customers away. "There is actually a very serious story behind the name of our sweet shop. It's not just a marketing gimmick. My grandfather was a huge follower of Mahatma Gandhi and once he attended his speech in Delhi where Gandhiji remarked that sugar is 'white poison' and it can lead to several deadly diseases. But people were still consuming it and paying a lot of money for it. Thus, they were being tricked by the British. This put him in a dilemma because he wanted to avoid using sugar but there was no way to prepare these ladoos without it as sugar was very easily available back then and also cheap. Therefore, he decided to call them 'Thaggu Ke Ladoo' to hint that the customers were being tricked and warn them about the side-effects of consuming refined sugar. Over the years, it became more of a joke," shares Adarsh Pandey.
An old glimpse of the shop when it started The sweet shop is popular for selling only two items - Ladoos and Badnaam Kulfi (another weird name which means kulfi with a bad reputation) as they don't want to compromise on the quality by keeping more sweets. "We have to provide the same taste that we've been offering for all these years and so, it's best to keep limited items, else, people might really think that we have cheated them," says Mr. Pandey. They have six outlets in Kanpur at present and have expansion plans to other cities, perhaps Delhi/NCR in the coming months. Finally, what are these ladoos made of? "Our ladoos are made with the right blend of pure khoya and suji and come in two variants. One is plain and the other is infused with dry fruits like kaju, pista and badaam," says Mr. Pandey. A box of ladoos could cost you anywhere between INR 420 to INR 600 while a bowlful of Badnaam Kulfi (ek dona - 100 grams) is priced at Rs. 44. The whitish-brown ladoos are rich and delicious while the kulfi is super creamy and will simply melt in your mouth.
The oldest shop is located in a noisy, chaotic lane with a bustling crowd at Bada Chauraha in Kanpur. In their book, 'Highway on my Plate: The Indian Guide to Roadside Eating', famous food gurus Rocky Singh and Mayur recommend it as 'a must-visit place' and also share having a conversation with Mr. Ramavatar Pandey (founder of the sweet shop) who was a great poet and a man of much humour.
