It was always a known thing, there was never any doubt in anyone that knew him, Oscar has always been destined to be an F1 driver. It was written. Anyone that knows him knows this. And you've known him almost all your life. Before he went to Europe and before he started travelling around for Karting and racing in the Formula series. It seems like there was never a point in your life where Oscar wasn't in it. What started as playground friendship turned to crushing on each other, turned to liking each other and then turned into a relationship. Not high school sweethearts, more like six grade sweethearts. No one expected your relationship to last due to you being so young, and still growing up and developing. Yet, the distance only made you grow fonder of each other. Your relationship survived him moving to the UK for school and racing, it survived the time difference and all the growing up you had to do. Video calls are your thing, you're the kind of people to have it on for hours doing mundane things not necessarily talking but just having the feeling that the other was there.
Now when you became 18, the next step wasn't surprising to those around you. You and Oscar talked about it for so long, you finished school already, so what was stopping you? Nothing. With the help of your parents you both got married, and so you relocated to the UK with Oscar.
You went to Uni and he was off racing. Coming home to you was always the highlight of the day for Oscar, he'd leave his bags by the door and search for you in the apartment before he'd just all but throw himself at you just wanting some love and attention.
You'd be sitting on the sofa folding some laundry, the TV playing, the door would open and close and you would be none the wiser. Oscar would follow the sound of the TV finding you engrossed in the show that's playing, your hands moving on their own as you fold his shirt. Oscar would move to the sofa and you'd gasp in surprise, finally noticing him before he threw himself on the sofa, his head in your lap, his face hiding in your stomach.
"God, Osc, you scared me." You'd say but smile nonetheless, Oscar would mumble a 'sorry' and you'd barely understand it. Your hands go to his hair and you run your fingers through his locks, scratching ever so slightly. Oscar would groan and you lean down to kiss his head. "How was the flight?"
"Long." You hum and just let him have his time getting what he needs. Now it's not often that he'd fall asleep like that, but the flight was long and he didn't get any sleep, he doesn't remember when it happened, but he falls asleep. You'd stay like that for an hour or two, the TV still playing but the sound is lower until he'd wake up. Once he starts waking up, he starts moving around, he moves to his back and slowly opens his eyes, blinking up at you.
"Hey sleepyhead."
"Hey, I didn't realise I slept."
"Yeah, didn't even give me a hello kiss or anything." You teased him, Oscar sleepily sits up and places a hand on your cheek before he presses his lips to yours, once, twice, three times before deepens it. You sigh in content. Happy to have him in your arms after almost a week.
Tumblr media
Oscar didn't mean to hide it, he just didn't wear his ring, he lost it twice at races and since then he only wore it when he's not on a racing week. He's also not very talkative, he doesn't find himself sharing things about himself willingly, but if you ask he'll answer, you just have to prompt him. Maybe it was because he was a rookie, or because there was many things happening, but no one realised he was seeing someone in 2023, you've been to races, you didn't really like the limelight, not while you're still studying at least, so you'd go into the paddock alone, but you'd still be a guest of McLaren. Some people just assumed you're a family member (which is correct, but not how they thought) or just a close friend.
All of that came to an end when you finally finished Uni, and were free to travel more, and coming into the paddock with Oscar wasn't such a scary thing anymore. It all came with the fact that you got a new ring for Oscar and kind of 'proposed' to him with it in your living room, Oscar decided to try wearing his ring, he wouldn't have to take it off anyways. It's his wedding ring, and according to the rules he could keep it on.
It was a Grand Prix weekend, Oscar's family flew out for the race. You walked in with them, Nicole was by your side, a couple photographers took photos, manly because they're Oscar's family, not that they know about you. Getting into McLaren, someone tells Oscar that you're all here, you were back in Australia for 2 weeks, while he was at the factory working, it's more than you both had gotten used to in recent years. Oscar comes in and he ignores his family heading straight to you, you smile up at him and he leans in, giving you a hug and a quick kiss.
"Glad to know, you missed us." Nicole teased Oscar, and he went to hug her. She's always happy seeing how still in love you both are, it warms her heart. Her son is in a happy marriage while achieving his dream away from her. Oscar stands with you all as much as he could before he had to go back to work. You all made it to the hospitality.
"I heard Oscar's family is here." Lando walks in at one point, with a smile on his face, he greets everyone, stopping at you, seeing no similarities between you and Oscar. "I know I saw you before, but I don't know who you are."
"It's alright, I'm Oscar's w-."
"Girlfriend?" Lando cuts you off with a smile. "I knew he's in a relationship but he hasn't introduced you."
"No, I'm not-"
"Oh, are you not his girlfriend? I'm sorry."
"It's not tha-"
"I just want to meet his girlfriend, he never talks about anything unless you ask him and-"
"Lando, I'm his-"
"He seems like he's in a relationship, at least that's what I understood from him."
"I'm his wife."
"But I could be wrong and this is all a- wait... what?" Lando stops once he realises what you said, his eyes are wide while you just smile at him.
"I'm his wife." You say again, and his sisters all just giggle to themselves, finding it all very amusing. Lando looks at Nicole and Chris, as if he's waiting for them to say something, to say it's a joke, to deny it, anything.
"I told Oscar to just come out and say he's married." Nicole said shaking her head slightly, this is about to come out, and she knows Oscar will once again turn the internet on it's head.
"he's-you're-and." Lando looks to have malfunctioned. "I need a moment to come to terms with this."
Lando walks away in a daze, it leaves you all amused. You text Oscar telling him what happened with Lando.
Oscar didn't read your message, Lando walked in on him and his engineer while they were in a meeting.
"You-you- you have a wife?" Lando asked, and Oscar's gaze turned from confused to amused really quickly.
"Yeah." Oscar answered simply.
"What?" It was Tom's turn to be surprised.
"I'm married." Oscar held out his left hand showing his ring.
"I thought that was a family heirloom or something." Lando was exasperated.
"No, I lost one or two rings, so y/n, bought me a new one recently." Oscar explained.
"y/n? the girl you bring with you to races from time to time?" Tom asked remembering you, he saw you a few times, but there was never a sign that you're dating Oscar, never mind married to him.
"Yes."
"Why didn't you say anything?"
"It just never came up." Oscar shrugged, leaving both men flabbergasted, astonished by the realisation.
"You're one of a kind, Oscar, seriously." Tom shook his head and sighed. "We have to get back to our meeting, this will have to wait."
It didn't take long for the news to travel, those that were in the hospitality and saw the whole thing go down with Lando went on and spread the news around. And Lando asked a few people if they knew, apparently only Zac knew, he thought Oscar wanted to keep it a secret so he said nothing.
The news took a while before it reached Williams.
"Mate, did you know Oscar is married?" Alex asked Logan, Logan frowned and looked up.
"Yeah." Logan answered as if it was a stupid question.
"Why didn't you say anything?"
"I thought it was a known thing, I don't know." Logan shrugged. "He's been married since he was 18."
"18!" This was an even bigger shock to the Williams driver.
"Yeah, the moment y/n turned 18, they got married."
"Wow."
And thus the news once again spread, this time the other way around, all the way back to McLaren.
By the time of the driver's parade almost everyone knew that the youngest member on track was married. Oscar was the last on the back of the truck/car thing. All eyes on the Aussie.
"What's... going on?" He asked as he moved down to an empty spot.
"Are you really married?" Charles asked.
"Yeah." It seemed like this was Oscar's favourite answer.
"So I have a daughter in law?" Charles asked and Oscar laughed before nodding. "Wow, they grow up so fast nowadays."
"And you've been married since you were 18?" Max was the one to ask, he's as curious as everyone.
"Yes, the month she turned 18, we got married, and she moved to the UK." Oscar informed them. "And before you ask, I knew her since we were like 5, and have been together since we were 10-11."
"That's crazy." George said to Alex next to him.
By the time the race was underway, a few cameras made it to the McLaren garage for a sight of you. As Oscar was leading the race, the camera flashed to you, with your name and Oscar Piastri's partner under it. The ones watching from home were left confused, but not for long. Oscar won his second race of his Formula 1 career in his 2nd season.
You made it to Parc Ferme, with his parents, his sisters opting to stay in the garage and not get squished. Oscar was the last of the top to make it back, he went to his team before he went straight to you, as always leaving his parents to be hugged after you.
"Congratulations, my love." You tell him, and he squeezes you tighter, the helmet is in the way, but you still kiss the side of it. Oscar then moves to his parents before he goes to get weighed and interviewed by Nico Rosburg.
"-and before we let you go, and not to take away from your win, I have to ask." Nico said and Oscar smiled, he knew what was about to be asked. "Set the records straight, are you married?"
"Yes, have been since I was 18." Oscar said and looked your way, and the camera panned to you, as you stood between his parents smiling with love and adoration for your husband.
"Well, it might be late, but congratulations." Nico said and patted his back, before Oscar made it to the cool-down room.
Cameras snapped a lot of pictures of you, as they waited for the podiums to start. It was obvious how familiar you are with Oscar's parents, and how they treated you like one of their daughters. The interaction was just filled with love and care. This has been going on for years, there's no denying it.
Tumblr media
"I didn't know it would be such big news." You said that night, as you and Oscar cuddled on the Sofa, having a quiet moment in the hotel with his family.
"I knew." Nicole said.
"I did too." Chris said.
"Me too." Hattie said.
"Of course it would."
"Obviously."
"Noted." You said and Oscar smiled, kissing the side of your head. "Now everyone knows you have a wife."
"And everyone from your university knows you have a husband."
"You two are still as awful as ever." Hattie said and rolled her eyes teasingly.
"You should've been used to it by now." Nicole said and smiled at her family.

JULY 2023
The plane rides to Switzerland were arguably the worst experiences of your life, when it came to air travel at least. First, people at the terminals were absolutely miserable and rude to you from the moment you stepped foot in the airports until you sat in your seat on the plane. Second, you almost missed your flight after your overnight layover because the hotel shuttle broke down. Then, you were unfortunately seated next to the seemingly one person on the plane who snored while they slept. On top of all of that, you were in the middle seat for both flights.
Needless to say, you had had enough of planes for the time being and you wouldn’t be upset if you stayed in Switzerland for the rest of your life if it meant never having to do that again. The only thing that got you through all of that without crying your eyes out were Nico’s excited texts about your arrival, and also Jack, who had to talk you down from fighting one of the terminal women at the airport after Charlie called him in a panic.
Once you and Charlie had gone through the proper channels to be granted clearance and had your suitcases, you searched the sea of people bustling around the airport for Nina, Nico’s sister. You’d only seen her in pictures, but Nico had made her send you a picture of what she would be wearing to make her a little easier for you to spot. You were grateful that she had, because you’re not sure you would’ve found her if it weren’t for knowing she was wearing a bright yellow top.
“Hello,” She beams, her smile just as bright and her accent thicker than her brothers, “It’s so nice to finally meet you! Nico has not shut up about you since he got back home.”
Your cheeks instantly flushed a deep shade of pink as you let the man to her left take your suitcase, while she grabbed at Charlie’s. You’d known Nico had told his sister about your arrival and trip, but you didn’t think there was enough to tell that would’ve had him discussing you for the last two months. Though, you were going to choose to not dwell or read too much into it. Maybe it was a simple mistranslation.
“It’s nice to finally meet you, too,” You grinned, letting her pull you forward into a hug, “I’ve heard so much about you over the years.”
“Hopefully good things,” She teases as she gently squeezes you, “This is my boyfriend, Finn.”
You step out of Nina’s grasp and take Finn’s outstretched hand, a warm smile on your face as you introduce yourself. Once Charlie had made her own introductions, Nina was ready to set off towards the car. She relayed an apology from Nico, mentioning how he desperately tried to get out of the prior commitment just so that he was able to pick the two of you up. You had to ignore Charlie’s not-so-subtle elbow into your rib cage as she snickered.
“I’ll be sure to tell him not to worry. After all, he’s letting us stay in his house for free,” You lightly laughed, handing your backpack to Finn as he loaded the trunk.
“Yes, he told me about that. He said you are quite stubborn, in the best way,” She had a mischievous smile toying on her face, “He was ready to give up the entire place, but he said you wouldn’t let him.”
“Yeah,” You shyly laughed, “I’m not putting him out of his own home. I don’t mind sharing a bed with Charlie.”
Nina slightly raised her brows at you, giving you a teasing smile when she noticed the blush that was still decorating your cheeks. You averted your gaze away from the woman in front of you, trying to not think about how much Nico had told his sister about you. Trying to ignore the stampede of butterflies in your stomach.
“Thank you,” You and Charlie said at the same time as Finn grabbed the last of your bags, earning an amused look from the Swiss natives in front of you.
Nina offered either one of you the front seat, but you both declined and slid into the back instead. The drive there was filled with her pointing out landmarks or important shops, with Finn chiming in every once in a while despite his English being slightly off. You made a mental note to learn more words in their language to better communicate with him, and the other Swiss born people you’d encounter. You tried to learn the language as best as you could over Duolingo without asking Nico, but that proved to be more difficult than you’d anticipated.
Nearly halfway through the drive to the apartment, you’d gotten a text from Nico that mentioned how sorry he was for not only him not being there, but for also sticking you with his sister until he was done. You bit your lip in order to prevent yourself from smiling, though it didn’t necessarily work based on Nina’s smirk when she glanced back at you. Your response was simple, telling him that it was perfectly fine, that you loved his sister, and you were excited to see what he had in store.
When Finn pulls up to Nico’s complex, he leaves the car running outside the main front door and jumps out to grab your suitcases from the trunk. You slip out of the backseat, Charlie following suit as the two of them nearly shove you away as they grab your bags. Finn mumbles something to Nina before placing a gentle kiss to her lips and getting back into the car.
“He said wait here until he parks the car,” Nina translated, hands on her hips as she watches him drive off, “So, you and my brother are not…?”
The question caught you so off guard that you slightly choke on the air in your lungs, your eyes widening as Charlie let out a loud laugh. “We’re just friends,” You explained, your voice slightly cracking in embarrassment.
“I don’t buy it,” She shrugs nonchalantly, her brow quirking as she looks at you, “I know my brother, and you’re quite obvious too, you know.”
“Oh, I know,” Charlie snorted, ignoring the scowl you sent her way.
“We’re just friends,” You repeated, your voice much softer as you stared at your shoes.
Though Nina still didn’t believe you, she dropped the subject and fell into conversation with Charlie as you sat with your thoughts. It was a secret to none, except for Nico himself apparently, that you had feelings for him, and you’re not sure how you plan to keep those tucked away for the next week and a half. Nina’s subtle comments about how much he spoke about you were not helping you, either. In fact, they were letting you drift back over into the possibility of him liking you back.
Finn quickly returned, taking only your suitcase after you put up a stubborn argument when he tried to carry your backpack as well. Nina translated for the both of you in amusement, laughing with Charlie when you placed your hands on your hips and shook your head at Finn. After your small, harmless debate had been settled, you followed them inside and up to Nico’s apartment. While you were in the elevator, you felt your phone buzzing in your back pocket, and you saw Nico’s name on the screen.
“Hello,” You answered, turning away from the smug smiles of the three of them.
“Hey! Did you guys make it to the apartment,” He asks, only the quiet hum of passing traffic being heard in the background, “I’m on my way now. I made them let me leave early.”
“Yeah, we’re in the elevator right now,” You told him, a light blush decorating your cheeks simply from speaking to him, “You didn’t have to leave early. We would’ve been fine.”
“Oh, he left early,” You heard Charlie’s teasing whisper followed by Nina’s giggle.
“I wanted to. I’ll be there in about ten minutes, so I will see you soon,” His voice was slightly softer than usual, almost as if he was trying to hold himself back from something.
“Great, see you soon,” You bashfully spoke, all too aware of the audience behind you.
You disconnected the call, avoiding turning around to see what you know are going to be playful grins and relentless comments on how red your face had gotten. Luckily, the elevator had reached Nico’s floor, and Nina was slipping past you to lead the way. Shaking your head when Charlie winked at you, you followed the two of them down the hallway until you reached what you assume is Nico’s apartment since Nina’s fishing around her bag for a set of keys.
When she finally gets the door unlocked, she pushes it open and gestures for the two of you to step inside. Your eyes are dancing around the apartment, drinking in all of the little details and decorations that littered the space. Pictures of his family and friends hung on the wall, but there was one picture in particular that stood out to you.
It was a picture of just the two of you that had been taken less than four months ago, after their win over the Rangers. You had tagged along with the guys and their partners out to some small diner to celebrate their win, and you ended up next to Nico at the table. You later learned it was not a happy accident courtesy of Nicole. The two of you were talking and having a good time when you had tipped your chair too far backwards, sending you toppling over.
Nico, being the kind person he is, had tried to prevent you from falling, but instead, he went crashing down with you. The two of you laid on the floor, laughter echoing around you as you looked at him. You had no idea anyone had even taken a picture of the two of you, but it made something swell inside of your heart at the thought of Nico not only  knowing, but even caring enough to print it out.
“Let me show you the guest room,” Nina’s voice tears you out of your trance.
Both girls share knowing, teasing looks with each other, earning an eye roll from you as you follow Nina down the short hallway. She pushes open a door, her and Finn rolling the suitcases into the decently sized bedroom. You rush around Charlie, quickly moving to claim your side of the bed before she can do it.
The bedroom isn’t anything grand, but it looks extremely comfortable and cozy. The fluffy comforter is a light blue color with matching pillowcases that told you it likely came in a set. The walls in the room were sparsely decorated, but there was a full length mirror tucked in a corner with a small table next to it that was perfect for getting ready. There was also a TV that appeared to still have the plastic protective film over it sitting atop a nice wooden dresser.
The view outside the window made your jaw drop and your eyes slightly widen, the thought of never leaving returning again, but for a much better reason now. You had only seen very little of what the city had to offer, but you were already absolutely enchanted by it in its entirety. There was absolutely nothing that could compare.
“I’ll let you guys get settled and wait for Nico in the main room,” Nina softly spoke, “If you need help, just yell!”
“Thank you,” You gave her a small smile.
You and Charlie fall into a comfortable silence as you begin taking things out of your suitcases and bags. There was a small closet that you divided equally, and you also split the six drawer dresser between the two of you. You left your toiletries and other items on the exposed space of the dresser, not wanting to take up any bathroom space. You were in the middle of tucking your suitcase under the bed when you heard his voice.
“Well, come on,” Charlie playfully rolls her eyes as she watches you debate going out there.
She doesn’t wait for you as you briefly remain in your spot, your hands trembling with nerves, but you follow shortly after. Your heart is pounding in your chest as you round the corner, and you’re not entirely sure why. You knew you were going to be seeing him, so why were you so nervous?
“Hey Nico,” Charlie greets, letting him pull you into a side hug.
He greets her in return, but his eyes don’t leave your figure once he notices you hesitating near the hallway. The three of them notice the way Nico seems to have let them fade away, his focus now being you and only you. Nico’s arm is so loose around Charlie that she barely feels a difference when she steps away from them, her smirk matching that of Nina and Finn as Nico steps towards you.
Your eyes never stray away from his, everyone around you blending in with the background, as you watch him approach you with bated breath. Nico has the small smile on his face that he always does, but it makes your heart swell all the same. He instantly pulls you into his chest, his arms wrapping around your neck as your own wrap around his torso.
Nina shares a look with the two others as she shakes her head in amusement before she moves into the kitchen. Finn follows suit, Charlie shortly after, leaving you and Nico in the main room alone. Your head is pressed against his chest as you relish in the feeling of his arms encasing you. You could stay there forever if you had the opportunity.
“Missed you,” Nico bashfully mumbles, making your already red cheeks deepen in color.
“Missed you, too,” You whisper against him.
“I’m excited to show you my home,” He says as he pulls away, his hands lingering on your arms a tad longer than necessary, “I have a lot planned for us.”
The first couple of days Nico showed the two of you around Bern, taking you to all of his favorite spots, and spots he thought the two of you would enjoy. He let you guys have control of when you went, but he gave some guidance because certain places were best to see at certain times. He also gave you the option to say no every time he brought up something he wanted you guys to see, but you never did. Both of you wanted to see everything that you could.
The third day you were there, Nico mentioned that his parents wanted to host dinner for everyone, but he made it clear you didn’t have to go to that either. He reiterated that it was your trip and if you didn’t want to spend the little time you had with his family, he completely understood. You had given him a pointed look when you told him you would love to go and that it would never be anything except an honor to have them host you for dinner.
You had spent the majority of the day relaxing and wandering around the city with Charlie while Nico had gone off to do something work related for the morning. The two of you arrived  back at his apartment an hour before you were supposed to leave, and you took turns showering before getting yourselves ready for the dinner. You were sitting on the floor in front of the mirror doing your hair when you noticed a receipt on the floor poking out underneath the table.
Curiosity always gets the best of you, so you reach for the paper and pull it out to look at it. The words were in a language you didn’t really understand, but the date was something you could clearly read. It was dated only a couple of days before your arrival and it had four things listed on it, so you opened your phone to do your best google translating job.
Mirror. TV. Side table. Comforter set.
Nico had bought a mirror, the comforter set, the side table, and a goddamn TV for the room before you got there. You’re positive he would’ve done this for anyone who was visiting and staying in his house, but you couldn’t help but let the warm feeling in your chest spread throughout your body. Nico had a big heart and he would always go to great lengths to make those he cared about as comfortable as possible, and regret from all of the times you let your unnecessary feelings push him away flooded your body.
You didn’t have much time to dwell on that when you heard him walking through the door. Nico quickly popped his head in the room and to tell the two of you he was going to shower and change and then they would head to the train station. You and Charlie finished getting ready and waited for him in the living room, talking about how much fun you were having so far. It didn’t take Nico long to come out of his room freshly showered and changed, and he looked good.
He had changed into a pair of simple white shorts and he had on a black shirt that had an unrecognizable logo above where his heart was. It wasn’t anything over the top, but it still made you flush with warmth as you looked at him. Charlie elbowed you in the side when she noticed the way your stare lingered on him, a quiet snicker passing through her lips.
“Are you guys ready,” He asks, his cheeks tinged slightly pink. You assume it’s from how quickly he got ready, but Charlie knew better.
“We’ve been waiting on you,” You tease, playfully rolling your eyes.
“Yeah yeah,” He laughs as carefully brushes past you, “Let’s go then. Our train leaves soon.”
“Why are we taking a train again,” Charlie asks while the two of you follow Nico out of his apartment, letting him lock it behind you.
“It’s the quickest way to my home city. It’s an hour by train and two hours by car,” He says over his shoulder.
The three of you took the short trip to the train station, the car ride full of Charlie practicing her German with Nico who laughed at her attempts, but corrected her with grace. You yourself had recruited Nina’s help in learning and understanding the language, a little too embarrassed to ask for Nico’s help even though you knew he wouldn’t judge you.
When you arrived at the station, Nico made sure that everyone had everything before guiding the two of you inside. It was busier than you thought, but Nico said most things there were since it was the summer months. His eyes kept glancing behind him to make sure the two of you were behind him, and he made sure to give you a small smile each time you made eye contact with him. He could tell you were becoming overwhelmed at the amount of people, and he wanted to take your hand in his own to calm you down, but he knew he couldn’t do that.
When you finally made it onto the train, Nico guided you to your seats, gesturing for the two of you to sit before he did. You took the seat by the window, and Charlie gave you a subtle wink as she took the seat across from you instead of next to you. You carefully narrowed your eyes at her, but she looked away with a smug look on her face.
Nico took the seat next to you as the three of you fell into a comfortable silence. You kept your hands clasped in your lap, silently cursing Charlie but simultaneously thanking her at the same time. She was only doing what you were scared to do. The feeling of his thigh pressed against your own made your mind hazy as you kept your eyes trained on the platform outside of the window, watching as people rushed by.
Charlie, who couldn’t stay quiet longer than five minutes to save her life, started asking about what the rest of the week had in store even though he’d told you a hundred times. Nico indulged Charlie’s questions, though his eyes kept flitting to you as you stayed quiet in your seat. He wanted to ask you if you were okay, but he felt like it wasn’t the place for that. Though you were fine, except for the always impending realization that your feelings for the man next to you seemed to grow every day.
You started joining in on the conversation not too long after the train ride started. It was a mixture of topics ranging from what you were going to do now that you graduated to Charlie’s complicated relationship with Jack. Charlie had noticed the way both you and Nico had subconsciously shifted your bodies towards each other, but she chose to silently observe rather than embarrass you both like you did to her.
When the train reached the station in Nico’s hometown, you couldn’t help but feel slightly nervous. You felt as if you had to make a good impression on Nico’s parents and you were nervous that you were going to screw it up. What if your outfit was too much? Too little? What if you tried to speak to them in their native language and you embarrassed yourself?
Both Charlie and Nico could see the worry on your face, and she gave it a moment to see if he would step in. She watched him hesitate, but ultimately had backed down so she could step in. Charlie grasped your hand in her own, giving it a gentle squeeze as the two of you followed Nico out towards where Luca said he would be waiting.
As soon as the brothers saw each other, they were loudly greeting each other as they pulled the other into their embrace. You couldn’t help but notice the way his entire face lit up the moment he saw his brother. You weren’t used to him looking so truly carefree that it put a smile on your face, and it made you wish that he could feel that happiness all the time.
Nico lets go of his brother and introduces him to the two of you. Luca, much like his sister did, tugs you into his arms as he says, “So nice to meet you. Nico has told me a lot.”
Your face instantly heats up, as does Nico’s as you step out of Luca’s hold and keep your gaze on the ground. Charlie quietly mumbles about how much she loves this family before letting Luca hug her aswell. You are intensely aware of Nico’s proximity to you, but you’re too flustered to glance at him. Truthfully, he’s a little embarrassed himself that his brother exposed him so freely.
“Well, let’s get going,” Luca claps his hands together, “Mom is excited to see everyone.”
The ride to their home was fairly short, but Nico and Luca pointed out a few of their favorite spots from when they were children. It was a cute town, full of life and character that most towns in the United States could only dream of having. Each new thing you saw had you completely enamored, and furthered the idea that you could stay forever.
The four of you climbed out of the car and headed towards the house, and you had forced yourself to put on your best facade of confidence to mask the nerves that rippled from your chest. Charlie looked nervous herself, but the both of you knew it was for a far different reason than you were.
You admired the outside of his parent’s home as you walked up the path to the front door. It was nothing grand, but it was beautiful. They had a blooming garden tucked underneath what you assumed is the window in the main room. They had adorable outdoor trinkets perfectly littered in the yard, and they even had the most beautiful bird bath you’d ever seen.
Luca opened the front door, announcing your arrival as he gestured for you guys to follow him inside. You guys step into the entryway, toeing your shoes off in lieu of Luca and Nico. You let your eyes wander around you, taking in all the pictures that decorate the walls. A small smile makes its way on your face when you notice a picture of Nico when he was younger dressed as one of the Ninja Turtles for what you’re assuming was Halloween. Though with children, it could’ve been a random Tuesday afternoon.
Your heart slams into your rib cage as the voices of Nico’s parents fill your ears, shortly followed by the sound of footsteps approaching you. Nico watches as you fiddled with your fingers and chewed on your bottom lip, and he’s brought back to the moment he first saw you. You were sporting a similar worried look, and you were even wearing a similar dress. The one thing that hadn’t changed, though, was that Nico still thought you were the most beautiful girl in the world.
“Hallo, meine söhne,” Nico’s mother softly speaks as she wraps her arms around Luca, followed by Luca. (Hello, my sons)
“Hallo mama,” Nico greets, returning her affection, “This is Y/N and Charlie.”
“Oh, hello,” She beams, her accent thick and clasping her hands in front of her as she looks at you, “It’s so nice to finally meet you two! I’m Katja. Do you mind if I give you a hug? We are huggers in this family!’
“Of course,” You shyly smiled, stepping into her outstretched arms. Her embrace brought a sort of comfort to you that made you feel at ease and welcomed.
“Sie ist sehr schön, Nico. Warum ist sie nicht schon wieder deine Freundin,” She teases as she looks at her youngest child, though you can only understand a few words of what she said. (She's very beautiful, Nico. Why isn't she your girlfriend again?)
“Er ist eine muschi,” Luca laughed, earning a shove from his brother. (He’s a pussy)
Katja let go of you as she passed you an adoring smile, turning around to briefly scold her two boys before pulling Charlie into a hug. You let your eyes fall on Nico and you noticed the way his neck and cheeks had reddened, so whatever his mother and brother said must’ve been poking fun at him. You weren’t entirely sure what they had said, but you made out the words ‘beautiful’, ‘why’, and ‘she’.
“Where’s dad,” Nico asks, clearing his throat as he slightly steps towards you.
“In the kitchen. Nina and Finn said they will be here soon as well,” She smugly smiles at the way her son seems to drift towards you, whether he’s aware of it or not.
“Is there anything I can help with,” You speak up, swallowing the nervous lump in your throat.
“Absolutely not! You are a guest here. You kids go in the main room and chat. Dinner will be done soon,” She waved the four of you off, subtly raising her eyebrows at Nico as he passes by her.
Nico trails behind you as the four of you fall into the living room, and it’s almost like Charlie and Luca had made a silent agreement to force you and Nico by each other when they sat on the sofa and stretched their limbs out. You playfully roll your eyes at your friend as you sat on the smaller sofa, Nico shaking his head as he took the seat next to you. You ignore Charlie who keeps glancing at the empty recliner, instead focusing on Luca as he begins asking the two of you about your time so far.
Nina and Finn arrive not too long after, the middle child taking immediate notice to the way her brother has his arm loosely slung around the back of the cushion behind you and the way you seemed to lean into him. Luca had taken over the recliner so the couple could sit on the couch, Charlie greeting them before everyone fell back into conversation.
Rino, Nico’s father, comes in when the six of you are discussing potential plans for later in the evening and announces that dinner is ready. A trail of hungry stomachs file into the dining area, everyone taking seats at the table. Katja is on one end followed by Nico, you, and Charlie while the others are on the other side with Nina directly across from you.
“What do you girls do for a living,” Rino asks as they begin passing food around the table.
“We actually just graduated. I majored in digital marketing, and I landed an internship with Ralph Lauren,” You bashfully admitted at the slight bragging moment.
“Congratulations! Nico told us about that, I believe,” Katja nonchalantly added.
Your face flushed as you take the dish from Nico’s hands, his eyes full of mortified apology. Charlie comes to your rescue by going on about her own major, the attention shifting on to her instead of you. You weren’t necessarily embarrassed by the things they had been saying, it just caught you off guard. They were making it increasingly difficult to deny yourself the pleasure of knowing that he didn’t feel the same. It was causing a war within your brain and heart.
The rest of the dinner went by with minimal teasing comments, and you had a fantastic time. You felt slightly guilty when his family would stumble over their English, and you made a point to tell them they didn’t have to do that the entire time. Katja was quick to wave you off and say that it was no problem and they needed to practice. However, you and Charlie both said you needed to practice too, so you compromised. You would speak to them in German and they would speak to you in English. It did not go very well on your end.
You refused to let his parents clean up dinner without your help, telling them how disappointed your mother would be if she found out you didn’t help. Once they realize you’re not backing down they end up letting you help Nico with the dishes while Charlie and Nina are tasked with cleaning the table. Luca and Finn corral Katja and Rino into the living, telling them to relax before they pick up the leftover tasks.
“Sorry about my family,” Nico quietly speaks after a brief silence, taking the dishes you hand him to dry.
“You have nothing to apologize for,” You laugh, “I love them. They’re amazing.”
“Yeah, but I mean the- I’m sorry about their comments,” He shyly admits, clearing his throat as he intently analyzes the plate in his hands.
Your movements still, the warm water running over the dishes as you let your gaze settle on him. The light above the sink illuminates his face in a way that’s almost certainly angelic. His brown eyes seemingly deepen in color under the light, and it makes your knees weak even though he isn’t even looking at you. His Adam's apple bobs as your silence starts to worry him, but when he turns his head he sees you’re already looking at him.
He sees the ghost of a smile toying at your lips when he meets your eyes. Your hair has delicately fallen in your face, and he knows you’ve tried to push it back countless times only for it to happen again. He knew it bugged you, and before he could realize what he was doing, he had placed the plate on the counter and he was reaching for the loose strands.
When you saw Nico’s hand reaching for you, you breath caught in your throat and you swear your heart stopped beating. You kept his gaze, your eyes slightly wider in anticipation as his fingers grazed your cheek. He pushed the hair that had annoyingly fallen in your face behind your ear, your mouth dropping open when he kept his palm against your cheek.
The two of you stare at each other, nothing but the sound of the running water filling your ears. His thumbs moves in the smallest of movements against your skin that you almost don’t feel it, but the action still sends shivers down your spine. Your breathing stutters, and you swear that he starts to move closer to you, but you’re interrupted.
“Are you guys do–,” Luca’s voice cuts through the tension between you, causing the two of you to spring apart, “Oh, I’m very sorry. Carry on, but we do want to leave soon.”
Luca has a smug smile on his face, one that rivals the many you’ve seen on Jack. He hastily walks backwards out of the kitchen, but not before tossing his brother a wink. Humiliation fills your veins as you quietly go back to washing the last few dishes in silence, not trusting yourself to speak. However, Nico mistakes your silence as a sign that he had misread the situation and he puts all of his focus on getting done.
The two of you finish not too long after, filtering out into the main room where the others are waiting to leave. There was no subtlety in their glances, but you ignored it and walked to stand by Charlie before they began going over the plan again. The six of you were going to some bar that they love and meet up with some of Nico’s old friends before coming back to sleep.
After everyone was in agreement, you split into two cars and made your way to the bar. Charlie was texting you the entire drive, trying to get the details of what happened in the kitchen, but you told her it was nothing. She didn’t believe you, saying she’s been third wheeling the whole time and there’s just no way it was nothing. Though she dropped it when you asked her how Jack was doing, noting that he hadn’t been texting you nearly as often as her.
When you arrived at the destination, you filed out of the car and fell in line with Nina and Finn as they led the way inside. Nerves were pricking your skin the closer you got, suddenly feeling more out of place than you had the entire trip. You were no longer going to be surrounded by strangers, you were going to be surrounded by people from Nico’s life here. The thought alone made you nauseous.
Luca trailed behind you as you walked inside and through the sea of people, quite a few of them greeting Nico and his siblings with smiles and hello’s. You felt small when their gazes would fall on you and Charlie, your mind wandering to the most anxious thoughts of what they could be saying about you. With one glance at you, Nico could see through the thin veil of calmness you had draped over yourself.
As Nina and Finn settled at the table, Nico was leaning down to your ear as he spoke, “Do you want to go with me to get a drink?”
You quickly nodded, knowing the alcohol would help ease some of the nerves. You asked Charlie if she wanted anything, but she said she was fine for now and that she would get something later. You followed Nico up to the bar, making a few stops so he could talk to someone, sitting on the bar stool he gestured to.
Nico placed his hand on the exposed part of the seat, his arm pressed against your back as he leaned forward to order a round of drinks for everyone. You tried not to let the effects of his touch show, but anyone who knew you could see that it left you frazzled. He looks down at you, giving you a small smile to attempt and bring you some sort of comfort, and it works at first. Until you hear the sound of a delicate voice directly behind you.
“Nico! Ich wusste nicht, dass du in der Stadt bist.” (Nico! I didn't know you were in town.)
You glance over your shoulder, noticing the way Nico quickly retracts his arm to his side as he slightly turns towards her. A beautiful blonde girl stands there with a bright smile on her face, and it feels like an exceptionally harsh reminder that you were virtually nobody even more so here than you were in Jersey. You watch as they engage in a brief conversation you barely understood before she looks at you.
“Uh, Y/N, this is Julia. She’s an old friend,” Nico awkwardly introduces, not looking away from her as you turn towards them.
You try not to read too far into his body language, but he makes it difficult when he completely turns away from you. He angles himself so that he’s covering a quarter of your body, and it makes your body heat up in embarrassment. You cast your eyes to the ground, but what the girl in front of you says nearly knocks the wind out of you.
“Don’t be silly, Nico. I’m his ex-girlfriend.”

Whiteman’s  lounging with a whisky, looking comfortably casual in a pair of chinos and a t-shirt—blazer combination. He might be taken for any young, up-and-coming London professional out for a drink to celebrate the long weekend. Hillinghead, by contrast, looks like he should be at a wedding- the man’s in a three piece suit and the most complexly knotted tie she’s ever seen.  Still, Shahara’s hardly going to judge him for feeling more comfortable completely covered up and the man is (she still can’t really wrap her head around this) a Victorian. He’s got a pint of beer in front of him, though it doesn’t look like he’s touched it.
She takes the first of the two empty seats at their table, her coke sloshing over the side of the glass as she sits, and remarks: “You two found your way around alright then?”
Whiteman sniffs sharply and half shrugs. “Fine. Nice to see the place not bombed to bits and rationing over.”
“It’s so- loud,” Hillinghead murmurs. “And crowded, and it smells-”
“It’s always smelled,” Whiteman interjects. “What, was it all roses in your time? I don’t believe that.”
“No,” Hillinghead stresses. “But it is- more.” he rubs the bridge of his nose.  “Have you heard from-” He freezes, staring at something just over Whiteman’s shoulder. Shahara can read a shift in to flight-or-fight posture easily and from the way he’s suddenly more alert, Whiteman’s clocked that something’s got Hilinghead spooked as well.
“Problem?” he asks quietly, in his clipped, cockney accent; a half-strangled vowel slips from Hillinghead’s throat and Shahara turns to see what he’s looking at. There’s two men enjoying what’s clearly a date, holding hands and locking lips. Shahara sighs internally, bracing herself for a slew of Victorian attitudes- “Yeah,” she says, a little sarcastically- Hillinghead’s knuckles have gone white, he’s clenching his fist so hard. The gold of his wedding band stands stark against it. “That’s allowed, nowadays- we don’t care.”
“Hm?” Whiteman glances around- there’s a moment where Shahara thinks she’s gonna have to deal with 1940s attitudes as well, but Whiteman turns back, uninterested. “Fair enough.” he starts patting himself down, like he’s looking for something in his pockets.
“They can-” Hillinghead murmurs. “I could…” He swipes for the beer and downs a quarter of the pint in one. Now Whiteman looks interested, he pauses his search, leans right forward and says, smirking, “Detective Inspector Hillinghead. Do you have a fancy man?”
Hillinghead sputters and brings down the glass. “Are you twelve?” he demands, something of the outraged parent seeping into his tone as– he’s blushing, Shahara realises. He’s actually blushing.
“Are you-?” She asks, leaning forward, and she knows it’s rude and none of her business, but still. “Are you gay?” The wedding ring. “Bi?”she suggests, as a follow up, and then: “Do you have a boyfriend?”
“I- what? I-” he looks back at the couple, then grabs his beer again. “I have- I have a- I have Henry,” he downs more of the beer. “It-it would be nice, to- to not…” he trails off, his eyes drifting away from both of them.
“See, I’ve always been a bachelor- a bachelor bachelor, not a confirmed bachelor, myself, but I - fuck, I left my cigars and my lighter in the other jacket-”
“Language,” Hilinghead reprimands at the same time as Shahara says: “You can’t smoke in here anyway.”
Whiteman drops his elbow to the table and points at her. “You what?”
“No smoking in public places, it’s banned.”
Whiteman flops back in his seat and grabs for his whisky. “The future is bollocks.” he drains the glass and slams it down. “Good whisky though. So. While we wait for Maplewood to join us….Hillinghead can kiss blokes, and I can’t smoke in a pub. What else should we know about this 2023, then…?”

You knew something was up when Jungkook—a boy who’d once spotted a squirrel in the road while driving at nearly 100kph—started squinting at the projector not even five meters in front of him.
Even though the two of you sat around the middle of your class, you’d frequently turn to find him angrily squinting at the board, struggling to read your smaller than average handwriting even though he’d never found it difficult before.
Now, sitting in your living room with homework strewn all along the floors and Jungkook nose deep his English textbook, you finally come to the conclusion that his vision might not be so 20/20 anymore.
“Jungkook,” you say concerned as he lets out a frustrated sigh, sitting upright with a frown etched deeply into his face.
“I can’t see,” he complains, groaning and rubbing at his temples. “And my head feels like it’s about to explode.”
You reach out to run your hand through his hair, biting on your lip when he unhesitatingly leans into the touch. “You can’t see?”
“No,” he pouts. “Everything’s blurry.”
“Jungkook.” You rub at his earlobe once before pulling away, searching his face with a pitying smile. “The font isn’t that small—I can read it just fine from where I’m sitting.”
He manages to look offended. “Okay. And?”
You sigh, placing your hand over his, like you’re about to deliver some bad news. For someone so smart, he can be so dumb. “I think you should see an optometrist.”
His doe eyes widen. “No,” he whispers, genuinely afraid-sounding.
You smile apologetically and pat his hand.
He pulls away from you to press the palms of his hands into his eyes, fake-crying into them like the drama-queen he is. “Fuck,” he whines.
You push up from the kitchen table and walk around to massage his shoulders, as if he’s a football player getting hyped up before his next big game. “It’s okay,” you soothe.
“I need glasses?” He sounds so sad, you can’t help but laugh a little.
“It’s not the end of the world!” you laugh. “Besides, I think it’ll suit you.“
“But what about soccer? I can’t play with glasses, they’ll get broken, or, or—“
“Contacts are a thing, remember?”
🌕🌖🌗🌘🌑🌒🌓🌔🌕
Now, a couple of days later, you knock on the packhouse doors with an eager smile, greeting Jimin with a long hug. “Is Jungkook home yet?”
“Yeah, he’s upstairs.”
“Thanks!”
The way to Jungkook’s room is a familiar one. As soon as you enter the pack house you turn right and head a single flight of stairs to the second floor where all the rooms and main bathrooms are. What is new, is all the various pictures hanging on the wall.
You take a moment to admire the new frames you assume either Seokjin or Rosé hung up between today and the last time you were here (around three days ago, now), smiling fondly at the closeness and joy in each picture.
It’s a large 24x48 canvas framed in a beautiful burgundy wood with golden highlights (which seem to have been painted on by hand), and it makes your heart stop.
It’s of a photo you took with the pack a few days after your birthday.
Your heart aches sweetly at the sight of Yoongi with his arms wrapped brotherly around your shoulders, free arm hoisting his whiskey into the air, a large grin on his face. Next to him is Jungkook, both hands in the air, yelling at the top of his lungs with one of those bottled glasses of coke. And around you, the rest of the pack.
Rosé and Jennie crouched beneath you, forming hearts with their arms on either side of your legs; Jisoo, Hoseok, Jin and Taehyung laughing at their brothers off to the side; Lisa yelling at the top of her lungs while being carried bridal style by Namjoon; Jimin on the floor at Rosé and Jennie’s feet, slightly blurred around the edges from setting up the camera.
It was the best night of your life.
“Y/N?”
“Hm?” You look at Jungkook with a smile on your face, which quickly turns into an appreciative grin. “Why, look at you!”
Jungkook laughs shyly, reaching up to self-consciously push his glasses further up his nose. It’s a simple frame: black metal, kind of large but not overly so, a little boxy.
“It looks good!” you say as you finally make your way up the stairs, giving him a quick side hug before making your way to his room.
“You think so?” He holds the door open for you and then lets it slide halfway closed, joining you on the edge of his bed where you’ve already taken up one of his controllers.
“Definitely. Really frames your face.”
He groans. “Not you, too. Jin hyung’s been making glasses jokes all day.”
You laugh, nudging him in his side while starting up It Takes Two (a game you’d asked him to get so you could play together). “I would too, Four Eyes.”
He growls, not even giving you time to think before his hands are at your sides.
🌕🌖🌗🌘🌑🌒🌓🌔🌕
Downstairs, Jimin shakes his head at your loud pleas for mercy and defeating scream-laughter with a fond smile, handing Jin another plate to dry off. “I wish those two would get together already.”
“Patience,” Seokjin chides with an equally fond grin. “They’ll figure it out eventually.”

okay but how does mat propose??? (like a pt. 2 follow up to the wedding cake fic)
omg omg omg a proposal request!! let it be known, i have never been engaged, BUT all my friends got engaged/married last year so i think i'm uniquely qualified (edit: this was started in 2023, you know, when this request was sent. once again, my b). (though this might just turn into my dream proposal bc i'm in love with him).
for those of you who wanna check the part 1 of the wedding cake fic, here it is!
another edit: i wrote this to distract myself from my absolute disdain at scott mayfield.
carry on.
his hands were sweating all day.
which was weird, considering it was february.
but it wasn't weird, given what he had planned. he didn't know if he wanted to scream or throw up. the idea of you becoming his wife surely made him giddy, but it was soured with the slight chance that you might say no. he was supposed to propose before the season started up again, but he was plagued with anxious thoughts.
it's not the right time.
i'm not ready yet.
or the worst one: i don't think i'm that serious about you.
which, in hindsight, wouldn't make sense considering you were already living together and have been for quite some time. you wore his jersey to games, you had conversations about starting a family, you texted his mom and sister more than he did. there was no reason for you to say no.
right?
right?
after he chickened out back in september, mat's new plan was to wait until the bye week to propose. he was going to take you on a vacation to conil de la frontera, spain. he had everything booked and ready.
but then he was drafted for the 2024 all star games.
he could see it in your eyes, you were ecstatic for him to be recognized, but when you took a week and a half off of work, you were planning on packing your bathing suit, not taking a short flight to toronto.
you bore the slight disappointment well, smiling and kissing him and hugging him tightly when he got the news. he beamed when he saw you post about it on your instagram.
he couldn't wait any longer to ask you. your reaction to a change in your vacation plans from something warm to canada in the winter solidified what he was anxious about for months.
you loved him, there as no doubt about it.
you were the most selfless human being he knew.
his teammates had been crucial in the planning process, well, at least their wives were. bo, marty, anders, brock, and clutterbuck had been chirping him since the start of the season when they noticed that your left hand was still devoid of a ring.
"what're you waiting for, barzy?" bo asked after a practice one day. "you found a good one, she'd probably wait forever for you, but why're you making her wait?"
mat shrugged at the time, too embarrassed to admit that despite being one of the best players in the league and having millions to his name, he was terrified that it still wouldn't be enough for you. not that you'd ever demanded more from him, you'd taken him as he was and cheered for him even when he was having the shittiest time of his life.
he could give you the moon and still wouldn't feel like it was enough.
so when mat finally told his teammates about his plan in toronto, they immediately communicated to the wives who were closest to you. sydney, grace, and holly took you out to get your nails done while marty, anders, bo, and mat started researching the most romantic places in toronto on anders' laptop just in case you spontaneously went through mat's search history.
the day was planned, the photographer and necessary tickets were booked, he'd propose at the evergreen brick works after texting auston matthews about cool places to visit while he was in town, (he had to clarify that he didn't care about cool bars, and was looking to bring you along).
you'd been talking nonstop on the plane ride to toronto that you didn't even notice mat was quietly stewing. everything had to be perfect.
it was the very least that you deserved.
the first day in toronto, both of you explored the city by going to coffee shops and restaurants recommended by players and their significant others. when you made it back to your hotel room, your feet were aching.
you fell face first into the bed, whining into the comforter. "my feet hurt," you groaned.
mat laughed from his position leaning against the wall. "i told you to wear better shoes," he said.
"i didn't anticipate you dragging me all over toronto today."
"well, that's what we'll be doing tomorrow too, so prepare yourself."
"mat," you whined, finally flipping over so he could see your pretty face again. you had a cute pout on your lips that he wanted to kiss away. "we're on vacation."
"and you've never been in this city before, you should get to see it." he walked over to where you were and grabbed your hands. "c'mon, let's go take a bath and then we can order room service and spend the rest of the night in bed."
you were quick to agree.
the following day was pretty mundane. but wednesday was the cause of mat's stress.
his phone lit up with texts from his teammates, his parents, liana, tito, and ethan, all wishing him a good luck. the two of you woke up early enough to go to a local cafe and grab breakfast before taking the bus to evergreen brick work.
"you okay?" you asked, placing your hand on his knee to keep it from bouncing anymore.
he thanked whatever possessed him to keep the ring box in his coat pocket on the side that wasn't pressed up against you.
"yeah," he smiled. "just ready to get there."
when the two of you hopped off the bus, you slid your hand into his almost immediately. out of habit, mat tucked you into his side, happy to just have you close. it was a little cold outside, but it was like he couldn't feel it because of your proximity.
"mat!" you tugged on his arm and pointed at one of the signs. "they have ice skating here!" you grinned widely up at him and he couldn't help but smile right back. "we should go!"
"we will," he said. "i wanna do this trail first."
you looked at him funny. "you wanna go on a walk?"
he shrugged, tearing his eyes away from you to focus on the signs in front of him. "auston suggested this place."
"you're asking for a lot of suggestions from auston. it's unlike you..."
"there's no need to be suspcious, babe. i know that you wanted to be in a tropical place for vacation, that was the plan and everything, but since we're here, thought we'd make the most of it."
you scrutinized his face for a moment longer before nodding and pulling yourself closer to him.
after you secured another hot coffee to combat the cold, mat started leading you on the trail. while you were ordering, he was coordinating with the photographer to make sure she was in position.
the trail itself wasn't that long, thankfully because mat couldn't get a word out and if it was any longer, he feared you would've caught on that he was incapable of speaking.
you were still talking about work drama when you got to the lookout point. your voice was taken away by the sight of toronto in the background.
you hadn't always been the most observant person ever, you didn't even know he liked you until he told you verbatim when he couldn't take it anymore.
"oh my god, mat," you gasped. you pointed at the skyline in front of you with the hand that wasn't holding your coffee. "look how pretty it is!"
he swallowed and knelt down on one knee while your back was turned. mat took the ring box out of his jacket pocket, doing his best not to drop it despite how much his hands were shaking.
"have you ever seen anything that--" you whipped back around to look for him. he watched as confusion filled your face when you didn't see him standing behind you, but kneeling in front of you.
"oh my god," you whispered, dropping your coffee on the ground so you could cover your mouth with both hands. "mat what--"
"i love you," he said. "i love the way you squeal at every cute baby that comes across your for you page or the way you cry at the drop of a hat. i love how you celebrate everyone around you. you are the brightest thing in my life and if i quit my job tomorrow, i know my life would still be fucking amazing because i'd have you.
"i know that my schedule is hectic, and you could probably find a man better than me, who was more consistent, who wasn't going to play games or have practices on your birthday, who could take you out of the country for a vacation to somewhere warm instead of dragging you with me to an all star game. but i promise you, i will do whatever it takes to give you the best life possible if you'd let me. i wanna grow old and crinkly with you, i want our kids to have the same last name as both of us. i want to be able to point you out in crowds and tell strangers that i somehow managed to convince you to marry me.
"i have never been more terrified in my life than i am right now," he admitted. "but i have never been more certain of anything i want more in my life than you. so will you have me? will you marry me?"
in the middle of his speech, mat didn't realize when he'd started crying, didn't even notice that you were all but sobbing. he just recognized the scent of your perfume when you lunged towards him and kissed him hard on the mouth, your tears mixing with his.
"yes," you mumbled into his mouth. "oh my god, yes."
mat let out a watery laugh and managed to slip the ring on your finger even though his hands were shaking. you pulled him up to stand and immediately wrapped your arms around his neck to pull him close.
you were sniffling as he pulled you in for another kiss.
"i love you,' he whispered against your lips.

The Best News of Last Week - June 6, 2023
1. Biden orders 20-year ban on oil, gas drilling around tribal site in New Mexico
Tumblr media
Hundreds of square miles in New Mexico will be withdrawn from further oil and gas production for the next 20 years on the outskirts of Chaco Culture National Historical Park that tribal communities consider sacred, the Biden administration ordered Friday.
The new order from Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland applies to public lands and associated mineral rights within a 10-mile (16-kilometer) radius of the park. It does not apply to entities that are privately, state- or tribal-owned. Existing leases won’t be impacted either.
2. Groundbreaking Israeli cancer treatment has 90% success rate
Tumblr media
An experimental treatment developed at Israel's Hadassah-University Medical Center has a 90% success rate at bringing patients with multiple myeloma into remission.
The treatment is based on genetic engineering technology. They have used a genetic engineering technology called CAR-T, or Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-Cell Therapy, which boosts the patient’s own immune system to destroy the cancer. More than 90% of the 74 patients treated at Hadassah went into complete remission, the oncologists said.
3. Federal Judge Makes History in Holding That Border Searches of Cell Phones Require a Warrant
Tumblr media
With United States v. Smith, a district court judge in New York made history by being the first court to rule that a warrant is required for a cell phone search at the border, “absent exigent circumstances”. For a century, the Supreme Court has recognized a border search exception to the Fourth Amendment’s warrant requirement.
4. Indigenous-led bison repopulation projects are helping the animal thrive again in Alberta
Tumblr media
Indigenous-led efforts are reintroducing bison to their ancestral lands in Alberta, bringing back an iconic species that was nearly extinct. These reintroduction projects, such as the one led by the Tsuut'ina Nation, have witnessed the positive impact on the bison population and the surrounding wildlife.
The historical decline of bison numbers was due to overhunting and government policies that forced Indigenous peoples onto reserves. These initiatives aim to restore ecological integrity while fostering spiritual and cultural connections with the land and animals. Successful results have been observed in projects like Banff National Park, where the bison population has grown from 16 to nearly 100, providing inspiration for future wilding efforts.
5. Breakthrough in disease affecting one in nine women
Tumblr media
Sydney researchers have made a world-first leap forward that could change the treatment of endometriosis and improve the health of women living with the painful and debilitating disease. Researchers from Sydney's Royal Hospital for Women have grown tissue from every known type of endometriosis, observing changes and comparing how they respond to treatments.
It means researchers will be able to vary treatments from different types of endometriosis, determining whether a woman will need fertility treatments.
6. Latvia just elected the first openly gay head of state in Europe
Tumblr media
The country’s parliament elected Edgars Rinkēvičs to be its next president, Reuters reported prime minister Krišjānis Kariņš saying.
Rinkēvičs publicly came out as gay in November 2014, posting on Twitter: “I proudly announce I am gay… Good luck all of you.” In a second tweet at the time, he spoke about improving the legal status of same-sex relationships, saying Latvia needed to create a legal framework for all kinds of partnerships.
7. France bans short haul flights
Tumblr media
The introduction of France’s short-haul flight ban has renewed calls for Europe to cut down on journeys that could be made by train. Last week France officially introduced its ban on short-haul flights.
The final version of the law means that journeys which can be taken in under 2.5 hours by train can’t be taken by plane. There also needs to be enough trains throughout the day that travellers can spend at least eight hours at their destination.

Morning After
not on ao3. gasp!
pairing: mike schmidt (2023) / reader [gender not specified]
word count: 1K
warnings & info: vague references to sexual activity from the day before, mentions of sex, a bit of the DTR convo
summary: After your first time together, you and Mike wake up and figure out what you want from your relationship
note: this takes place after Crush, but you don't have to read either to understand the other, they're pretty stand alone. Crush is 18+ and explicit sex, while this is pretty much just fluff :p
The Saturday morning light warmed your face as you woke, slowly stretching and reaching for… something. What was it? You took a deep breath, and the familiar smell jogged your memory. Mike.
You were fully awake now, blinking slowly as you took in your surroundings. His room was different in the pale sunlight- you’d only ever seen it in the harsh overhead light when you tidied up at night, or dimly in the moonlight when you were too preoccupied in other things to take it in. It was softer like this.
Where did he go? You rolled over, away from the window and toward the slightly open door. A stupid thought crept into your head: What if he left? Then, blushing even though there’s no one there to be ashamed in front of, you remembered that you were in his house, his bed. You were the flight risk, if anything.
Pushing the thought from your head, along with the similar ones that were bubbling up in the back of your mind, you swung your legs over the edge of the bed and rubbed your eyes. You tugged on your pants from the day before, opting to keep Mike's shirt on. It was comfortable, and wearing it made you feel faintly giddy. You padded out the door and down the hallway, and a sweet, warm smell enveloped you as the kitchen came into view. “What smells so good?” You asked.
Mike was at the stove, flipping something before he turned to look at you. The smile on his face was so wide it was silly, and your stomach fluttered at the sight. “Made pancakes,” he said, turning off the stove before running a hand through his already hopelessly messy hair. The fluttering you felt only got worse as you remembered you’d had a hand in making it so messy the night before. “Thought I’d make something nice since you’re still here for breakfast…”
He trailed off, cheeks just barely flushing, and you were across the kitchen with your arms around him in seconds. You pressed a kiss to his lips, smiling all the while, and his hands found their way back to your hips. “You’re so sweet,” you said as you pulled away, watching his brown eyes search yours. “It’s ridiculous.”
His mouth quirked up at the corner and his chest rose, clearly about to say something- but a noise from down the hall caught both of your attention. Abby, playing in her room, her voice carrying throughout the house.
Mike paused, whatever he was going to say forgotten, and the silence should have been comfortable, but… What was he going to say? Maybe he was going to say something about the pancakes. Or maybe he was going to let you down easy, tell you that the night before was a one time thing. Or that that was all he wanted- just sex. Would he say that? You chewed on the inside of your cheek. This was way more painful than just asking him what he wanted.
He finally broke the silence, saying “I wanted to ask-” at the same time as you started talking- “So, last night-”
You stood there, grinning dumbly at one another. “You first,” he said, his thumb starting to stroke your hip.
A huffed laugh, and you gathered your courage. “Um. Was last night… okay?”
He was speaking almost before you’d finished. “Last night was great. Better than great.”
His brown eyes bore into yours, and a little smirk played on your lips. “Okay.” Then, shoving his shoulder gently. “I know that much.”
Mike chuckled, eyes crinkling at the corners. “Yeah, I guess I didn’t leave much mystery.” A little silence. “Could we… would you want, I mean, to do it again?” Then before you could respond, “Not just the sex, I mean. Well, yeah, the sex, but-” He was turning slightly red now, and you couldn’t help the grin on your face, even though you could feel yourself growing just as warm. You put a hand to his cheek, silently brushing your thumb against his stubble. The look in his eyes was grateful as he took a moment, deciding what to say. “Abby was right about my crush on you. And I meant it when I said that I really like you.”
You moved your hand from his cheek, clasping both your hands behind his neck. “Me too. I really, really like you.”
A deep breath. “Okay. I wanna take you on a date, then. If you want. I mean- Will you go on a date with me?”
You were already giggling, and although his face was growing redder by the second, he was smiling at you so fondly it made your chest hurt. You pressed a kiss to his lips, sweet and slow. “Yeah,” you murmured as you pulled away, pressing your foreheads together. “I’d love to, Mike.”
You could feel him relaxing as he kissed you again, just as gentle. His hands moved from your hips to the small of your back, making their way under your (his) shirt. His breath stuttered a little when you sighed at the touch, the kiss deepening, your hands tangling back into his hair-
Another noise from down the hall. You pulled back, wide eyed, and tried not to snicker at Mike’s dazed expression. His brow furrowed, and you glanced to the side, toward Abby’s room. “Do you… are you okay with me being here when Abby wakes up? Like, is it okay if she knows we’re... A thing?”
He had no problem snickering at your labeling, and you smacked his shoulder. It was your turn for your face to grow unbearably warm. You scanned his face as he mulled it over, just for a moment. “I think so, yeah,” he said finally. “I’m hoping you’ll stick around for a while.” He kissed the corner of your smile, then murmured, “I have a feeling Abby will figure out that we’re dating pretty quickly, anyway. Or, at least, that somethings different.”
Your smile only grew, and Mike pulled you in for another kiss.

marketing ploy - LN4 / ch. 3
Tumblr media
a little (drunken) insight to Olivia and Oscar's relationship. Plus, a conversation she’s definitely not supposed to overhear, and one she finds makes her start to regret everything.
piastri!oc x lando norris / fake dating, brothers best friend trope
warnings/notes: alcohol/drunkness, language, like two jokes about sex, i named oscars sisters bc i couldn't find anything after two minutes of searching and also its cute ok

06 APRIL 2023 — MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA ↴
“Oscar!” I shout, the clock striking midnight. At my mother's house in Melbourne, we’re already all terribly drunk in the pool with only our eldest sister Ophelia's half sober boyfriend to make sure we all don’t drown while the 'middle' sister Oaklynn is in control of the aux so our extended family can't ruin the mood with what we call 'divorced dad rock.' It's an average Piastri birthday party, booze, music, and sopping wet bodies across the pool deck in the mid Autumn chill.
“Ollie?” Oscar says, turning around and slipping on the wet deck, splashing vodka all over the ground beneath him. Lily giggles into the back of her hand, steadying herself on his arm, and I snort as Oscar makes a face at the spilled drink.
We were so not going to have a good flight back to England tomorrow night.
“Happy birthday to my twin brother because its now midnight, baby!” I shout, being met with loud cheers as my mother guides me across the pool deck so I don't fall in. As Lily takes the now half empty glass from Oscar, I'm handing him what is probably the biggest shot of the night. He grins, arm wrapping around my shoulder as we clink our glasses in toast, tap them on our lifting knees and then take the shots with no chasers. The Fireball washes down my throat fine, but Lily’s shrill laugh lets me know Oscar’s not faring so well as our family claps at our celebratory shots.
“Come on, Ossie!” I laugh, leaning into him as I giggle and he laughs in turn, hiding his face in my hair as he groans and slumps against me. Luckily, Lily is smart enough to slip the shot glasses out of our hands.
“Why do I always let you pick Fireball? It burns every time I drink it.” He complains into my hair before stepping back, I grin up at him as a polaroid flashes.
“Twenty two slaps!” someone shouts before I can respond to Oscar. I scream, running to be out of the way of the barrage of backhands from our sisters when I trip. Oscar tries to catch me, bless him, and we both end up screaming as we tumble into the pool with a loud splash.
“Good lord—" Josh, Ophelia's boyfriend laughs, and he and Lily help us all back to the deck with plenty of half-wet towels to try and dry us off. I giggle and sit up once the parties attention is shifted elsewhere, some song playing that takes the heat off of us for a moment. I peek up to look at Oscar and he smiles at me, poking my nose.
“Thanks for this party." He says and I shrug, going to say its no big deal as I always do when he continues talking,
"Lando’s stress is rubbing off on me. With him being next in line for the best racer position, McLaren's pushing me and Bia up as quick as they can. I think they're expecting someone to try and buy Lando out from them.” he murmurs and in my head, the rest of the party fizzles out. My attention is solely on the man born a few minutes before me. His arm wraps around mine as he pulls me to his side. I slot there, where I belong, a comforting embrace of an older brother of the same womb.
"Lando's contract goes to 2026, and lets not worry about F1 right now." I poke his thigh where a bruise from a minor crash in training months back was finally finishing its healing stages, "Ossie, you, and everyone here, come before anything or anyone else. I would rather throw you a big party than fly back to England to chase around statistics with Red Bull for a few days."
I close my eyes as the world spins around me and I feel Oscar shift. His body heat vanishing around my shoulders, the air seemingly changes as some sort of breeze rolls across the pool deck. It makes me shiver, and I glance up at Oscar to see him staring into the light reflections of the glowsticks deep in the water our legs dip into.
“Ossie?” I whisper. He's in his head again, and this time I'm concerned it's my fault for some reason. His tongue pokes out, a sharp breath coming through his nose before he turns to me.
“What’s happening with you and Lando?"
Oh for the love of god--
"I know, I know, okay, older brother don’t let him hurt you speech bullshit blah blah but… is there something there?” Oscar blurts out with the upmmost care in his tone. I'm taken aback by how genuinely worried he seems about it.
“It’s nothing serious.” I deflect, hand coming to squeeze his wrist just above the watch he wears (that is definitely ruined now), “Just some flirting, some gifts… it’s like testing the waters.”
“Is he… kind to you?” Oscar's tone is far too accusing for my liking, almost like he's expecting me to say no, but despite that I nod.
“Too kind.” I find a small giggle escapes my lips. I have the urge to tell him everything, to say it’s all for media, but something makes me stop myself other than knowing it would kinda ruin the whole secrecy of it. Oscar watches my face, and I can see him sense there’s a lie, but he doesn’t push.
“Okay.” he sighs, taking my hand and squeezing it, “as long as he’s good to you.”

10 APRIL 2023 — MILTON KEYNES, UK ↴
"I'm bored." Oscar whines over the phone, making me laugh as I settle down at my desk in Red Bull's home base. There's about sixteen hours worth of things I need to cram into the next eight, considering my statistics for the next grand prix are due in like... twenty six hours?
"Aren't you supposed to be training?" I hum, reading through files and highlighting important notes I know I'll need to bring up with my team during our meeting tonight.
"Lando's going right now, and I kinda almost puked after endurance so I’m taking a break.” He makes a mock gagging noise and I recoil and groan and his soft laughter comes through my headphones.
"Christ, Ossie." I lean back in my chair, staring at the list of notes of things we need to improve by Azerbaijan, "Augh, this is gonna be the death of me. Max's numbers keep changing so he keeps skewing the data, at least Perez is pretty consistent."
"How many sensors do you guys have for Azerbaijan?"
"I'm not doing that work today, thats Kylie's job. Most of my work right now is just making sure that the car isn’t literally falling apart in Max’s hands since he’s been pushing it so hard this year.” I run my hand through my hair, feeling the grease along my hairline and cringing. I need a self-care day soon.
"Oh and Kylie’s pretty much running real time analytics herself this race so I might be able to hang around you at McLaren for a while if Christian's not breathing down my neck."
“Sick. I need to introduce you to the new social media photographer. Lando convinced her to a do a whole section on film.” Oscar giggles and my eyes widen--film photography was one of my passions in secondary school, and I can't imagine trying to shoot F1 on it.
“This poor girl.” I laugh as I adjust my seating and open the sensors scan from the left tire of Max's car, noting any abnormalties that haven't already been flagged. In the silent lull in the conversation, there’s a click and a creak on Oscar’s end of the call.
“Oscar—“ Lando’s talking is muffled for half a second before I hear something fall and a chair squeak, “what were you trying to ask me about earlier?”
My did my heart flutter when I heard Lando talk?
Nope. No. No, thank you. No.
I did not like Lando Norris.
“Oh—hold on Ollie—I’m going to attempt to mute.” I hear Oscar laugh as he taps his phone-screen, and like many times I’ve been on the phone with him I have to pause to see if he actually managed to mute the call.
Oscar seemed to always miss the important buttons, like hanging up or muting himself. Over the years, I’ve heard quite a few things I wasn’t supposed to.
Like Oscar’s next question—
“If I don’t just say it I’m never gonna ask, because it’s such a cliche thing but—what exactly are you trying to do with my sister..?”
I nearly die as my cheeks flush bright red as I scramble to pick my phone up.
Okay, super overdramatic reaction, but hearing this conversation happen in real time is not something I can feel like I would be able to physically handle. So, I’m quick to turn my volume all the way down and take off my headphones as soon as Lando’s laugh makes my cheeks dust pink.
Oscar was never particularly protective over me, in fact it had always been opposite. Even as the youngest Piastri I was constantly protecting my older siblings with my whole heart, like when Oaklynn was being bullied by her pole vaulting captain and I hit that guy so hard I broke his nose, or when Ophelia first got her heart broken and I drove all the way from Melbourne to Sydney in one go to pick her and her stuff up from his house. Oscar and I had many moments like that, considering our sisters were a bit older than us, it was always Oscar and I together. I had moved to England with him when he chose to pursue racing, he had been there every late night I spent studying to get into analytics as early as I had.
And I knew one day Oscar would have this conversation with the man I would marry, someone who took my entire heart in his hands and held it so gently I felt safer than I ever had.
But, Lando was not that guy. Not as far as I was aware.
Maybe ten minutes later, figuring the conversation is long done, I turn up the volume and just catch the end of it. Oscar's laughing, theres a soft thwack of someones arm being hit as Lando keeps talking, his voice fading into my headphones.
"...Ollie's just... I could stare at her all day and never get bored."
"You are--" Oscar laughs, and I hear him hit Lando's arm again, "so so goddamn cheesy, mate!"
"Sorry!" Lando laughs, and I try to ignore the way I bring a hand to my mouth as I stand up and pace around a little, shaking my hands and arms out a I try to suppress the giggles that bubble to my chest.

"Olivia Piastri."
"Max Verstappen."
"Olivia Louise Rae Piastri."
"Charles Marc Hervé Perceval Leclerc."
"Shit, she remembered."
I snort as I set my bag down as Max and Charles hover at my desk in the Azerbaijan paddocks. I'm starting to think the Ferrari driver might be having a contract change soon if his team is so lax with him basically living with us in Red Bull.
"What?" I ask, crossing my arms as the fabric of one of Lando's plain black leather jackets he'd lent me rubs the fabric of the sweatshirt I'd stolen from him underneath.
"How was your drift date?" Max grins and I roll my eyes as I plop down in my chair. Charles takes his spot in one of the side chairs as Max sits on the edge of my desk.
"He showed up to Red Bull, brought me flowers, we stopped to get takeout food and then went to the car show. He knew one of the guys drifting so we got to ride in his car and then he invited me over to watch a movie and we both fell asleep halfway through." I lean forward, "does that satisfy you?"
"Sleep?" Charles prods and I take a pen off my desk and throw it at him.
"Yes, sleep." I huff and before Max and Charles can continue their barrage of idiotic comments and questions, three knocks sound to the creak of the hinges as Christian steps into my office with Ada right behind him.
"Morning Chris, Ada." I nod and Max and Charles stand, greeting them both with firm handshakes.
"Ferrari might need their driver back, Leclerc, and Max--you need to get dressed." Christian waves them off without as much as a hello, before Ada shuts and locks my office door.
"What?" I find myself asking again as Ada grins to me.
"Sales are up 70%." She says, "We've made around... 28 thousand pounds so far."
"Holy shit." Is all I can say. 28 thousand pounds in revenue because Lando and I were pretending to date?
"You guys are doing swimmingly, we just have one more stipulation. You've already done the soft launch, Lando will be doing his tonight. The next thing you guys need to do, other than the paparazzi date but Astrid is working with Lando on that right now, is the celebration." Ada clasps her hands, Christian nods, keeping his back to the door that leads into the office and for some reason it feels suffocating.
"Great Britain. Hopefully Lando will podium, its his home race, a nice little kiss, it'll be cute."
We have to kiss in front of everyone. How could I fucking forget? The GB prix isnt for a while, two months if I remember right, but my mouth goes dry at the thought of kissing Lando Norris.
I don't remember agreeing and bidding goodbye to the two, all I know is my stomach ache doesn't go away for the rest of the night. Even when I ball the fabric of Lando's jacket--still smelling like him, over my face and scream into it.

Letters
Tumblr media
The Sixth Letter.
Timothée was about to open the sixth letter when his phone rang.
"Fuck," he muttered before answering the call.
“Timothée, are you ready? The car's already here," his manager said over the phone.
“Oh shit, I forgot," he mumbled. “Give me ten minutes.”
Timothée silently cursed himself. He forgot he was going back to New York.
He ended the call, then proceeded to get ready. He took a quick shower and put on some sweatpants and a sweater. He wasn't in the mood to dress up.
“Hurry up, Timothée!” His manager yelled from outside his hotel room. “Your flight is in an hour!”
“I'm coming!” He yelled back as he tried to fit his clothes in his suitcase. “Geez, you can't wait for a few minutes?” Timothée muttered under his breath.
“Timothée Chalamet, if you don't drag your ass out here in two minutes, we're leaving without you!”
“I'm here!” Timothée yelled, dragging his suitcase and backpack outside of the room.
“What took you so long? No, don't answer that. Come on, let's go!”
Timothée passed his suitcase to the hotel staff that was with his manager. The three then descended down to the lobby.
As Timothée was getting into the car, he realized something.
The letters! Y/n's letters!
He couldn't leave these behind, no matter what.
He hadn't finished her letters. He would be betraying her if he did't finish her letters.
“I'll be right back!” Like lightning, he quickly ran back into the hotel, back up to the receptionist. “I left something in the room!”
“What toom were you in?” The receptionist asked lazily.
“Room 1238.” He quickly answered. The receptionist gave him the keycard,
“Don't forget to bring it-” Before the receptionist could finish, Timothée was already dashing towards the elevator.
As soon as Timothée entered the room, he quickly searched the room. There it was: the basket of eighteen letters, Y/N's letters. He grabbed the letters and tied them up with the ribbon.
In a matter of seconds, Timothée was out of the door. He practically threw the keycard at the receptionist. He hopped into the car, the letters clutched in his hand.
It was funny how he already felt a sense of loyalty to this girl. He had never met her, yet he feels more than obligated to know her.
Timothée went through the letters, sorting them again by date. He opened the sixth letter, dated July 1, 2023.
Dear Timothée Chalamalabingbong,
Hey, did you miss me?
Yeah, as if.
I'm too damn delusional, sorry about that.
Anywho, I just saw the new trailer for Dune Part Two. And it's absolutely amazing!
I am absolutely excited for it! I can't wait to see it in theaters. Paul Atreides, my Lord, you can ruin my life if you want to.
Timothée loud out aloud, earning a weird look from his manager. “What's that?” she asked.
“Oh, nothing. Just fan mail.”
Did you know that you're fancasted as Regulus Black? I was shocked when I saw a video edit of Paul Atreides as Regulus Black.
I wasn't even interested in the younger Black brother, but boy, you changed everything.
Now I'm absolutely obsessed with a character you didn't even portray.
I can't wait for the Wonka trailer! I can't wait to see you as Willy Wonka.
You in a top hat? Boy, I'd fight a kid for a golden ticket.
You're so gorgeous, it actually hurts.
God, I'm getting sinful thoughts.
Forgive me.
Not.
All my love,
Y/n.
Timothée felt his cheeks burn. He was used to his fans thirsting for him. But this felt different.
Maybe it's because she only wrote eighteen letters, or maybe because she was pouring her heart out into her letters.
He wanted to find this girl. He wanted to understand why she stopped writing.
But how would he find her?
Timothée sighed as he put the letter back in its envelope. He silently vowed to find this mysterious girl.
No matter what.

Long Live - DR3 x fem!OC

Summary: An early morning phone call, a failed concussion exam, and an Instagram post lead to just one thing. A statement from Red Bull Racing released the Thursday morning before Silverstone. Oracle Red Bull Racing regret that Max Verstappen has failed his concussion assessment following his crash at the Red Bull Ring last week. Max is doing well, but as per the medical advice he will not drive in the event this weekend. In his place Third Driver Daniel Ricciardo will drive the RB19 for this weekend.
Warnings: Mentions of past crashes, Blake and Em scheming, mentions of cheating (not our loves!)
Words: 8.6k
A/N: Happy Danny Ric Race Week! This has been planned for…yeah so long. So, so long. Silverstone has been where so much of our stuff hinged and we’re so excited to get to share at last. Let us know what you think.
July 2023
Em glared at her suitcase. Dan’s was neatly packed - not that he needed much, his outfit for the weekend was jeans and Red Bull merch. But she needed a week and a bit of clothes for their time in Northamptonshire, plus changes. And with a limited supply thanks to the now prominent bump she was miserable about it. But they had to leave in the next few minutes or they might be late getting to Silverstone.
“You packed?” Dan asked, watching her shake her head. “Does the new stuff help?”
“Yeah. It feels ok.” The box had been sitting at reception waiting for them when they got back from the whistle stop trip to Perth, a gift from Lewis when he found out about her pregnancy. She’d mentioned once or twice that she hated the feel of some fabrics, and the clothes were soft and stretchy, comfortable for her and the baby. She was wearing one of them now, a lilac empire waist dress with black leggings that helped support her belly.
“Gimme a sec.” His phone started ringing almost too loudly for seven fifteen, Em zipping the case but leaving it for Dan to lift. Charlie had texted a photo of the brunch she and Blake had gone for that morning. He wasn’t back until the tyre test, and she missed having him there.
“Emmy?” Dan sounded dazed as he came into the room.
“Yeah? What’s up?”
It was quiet for a moment before he spoke. “I’m driving this weekend. I…I’m in the car this weekend. Max didn’t pass concussion protocol, the new rules are if you don’t pass it before Thursday morning you don’t pass for the weekend. I’m in his car. Fuck. I’m driving.”
He lifted her with a grin, spinning her around and holding as tightly as he could before Em kissed her husband, separating with a grin.
“You’re driving the RB19? For the race?”
“Yeah.”
“We need to tell everyone.”
It was a frantic phone call to Blake as they piled into the car, Dan putting the bags in the boot. The first two attempts went unanswered, but finally the third was answered.
“Dan I swear to God I used to leave you and Em alone when you were-“
“Blake it’s Em. I’m using his phone.”
“Oh, shit. Sorry. What’s up Timmy?”
“You and Charlie need to get on a plane. Dan’s driving this weekend. Max is out after the crash last week, he’s in.”
They’d watched the race the previous weekend from Perth, Checo crashing into Max at turn three and pushing them both off track. The two cars had been pushed into the barrier, Max losing consciousness for a moment. Em had watched terrified until she heard him over the radio, Dan gripping her hand tightly. It could have been so much worse, especially on a weekend already filled with tragedy.
“Fuck. Seriously? What time is it what can we get?” Blake’s voice came through the speakers in the car as Em was already searching flights. She turned the tablet to Dan, pointing at the direct Qantas one and the five tickets she had ready to go.
“I’m booking you on the Qantas direct, you get in here at five tomorrow morning. Give Callum a call, tell him to come too. I’ve business for Joe and Grace, the three of you are stuck in economy I’m sorry.”
“That doesn’t matter, we’ll get there. Somehow. You sure about Cal?” It was Charlie speaking and Em smiled.
“Positive. He’ll love it, we’ve got the passes. He can watch the race from the garage.”
“Ok. I’m gonna get packed and call Cal. Want me to pick up your parents?”
“They’ll probably pick you up, you’re at Charlies?” The organisation decided, Charlie promised to text when the five of them were at the airport. While Dan drove Em got on the phone with Qantas, putting on her charm and using her surname liberally so she could try get seats organised. It wasn’t much, but Charlie and Blake had a row to themselves and Callum had extra leg room so it was a little more comfortable.
The last thing she could do before relaxing for the drive was stare at her instagram account. The original plan was she’d wait at the hotel for the night so the pregnancy news could die down. But now she had to be there in just two hours. The post was written, ready to go, the carefully staged photos of their vans and the baby ones Dan had bought the day after they found out she was pregnant but had hidden until things were safe. The tiny little scan photo showing their bean. This was real.
“Ready for the world to know you knocked me up?” It was crude and blunt and made Dan laugh so it was worth it, Em grinning as his laughter filled the car.
“Ready for the world to know you’re stuck with me forever?”
“Feels right.”
She hit post, waiting for the chaos. Red Bull were announcing that Max was out at 9.30, so hopefully that would start to overshadow everything. Carefully she read the caption again and smiled at it. Baby Ric. Half Brit, half Aussie, already the coolest kid in the world. We really can’t wait to meet you, sunshine.
This was a good thing. Everyone who needed to know was aware that she was announcing it this weekend. Limited comments made it easy, the people she’d met mostly through Dan commenting congratulations publicly. She could breathe. The world was always going to find out about the baby but this made being pregnant real to her. It was actually happening.
They were nearly to the track when Dan’s phone rang again, Em hitting answer on the car screen.
“Hey Grace, Dan’s driving. We’re almost there.”
“Emmy, how’re you feeling? We’re waiting at the gate, the plane’s here and we should be on soon.”
“I’m good. News about the baby is officially out now.”
“How do you feel?”
“Excited. I think. I’ll tell you tomorrow. Fly safe, tell everyone I love them.”
The roads around the track were closed to the public, Dan getting through when he showed his paddock pass and people recognised him. Finally they were in the car park, pulling into the Red Bull Driver spot. This was real.
“You ready for this?” Em asked, watching as her husband ran his fingers through his hair, the thick gold band glinting in the sun.
“Yeah. I think I am. I want this. I want to be there, I want to drive well. I want to be on that podium again. Do you think I can do it?” It was the most honest he’d been about driving, the most open he’d been apart from nights in bed where only the dark surrounded them.
“Yes. I know you can do this. This is the track where you had your first race, where you did your first test. You can do this, Danny. I believe in you.” His smile lit up at her words as he put his hand on her belly, leaning down to press a kiss to it.
“And for this little one. Can’t embarrass her at the first race people know about her.”
“I thought we agreed it was they until we know?”
“She’s a girl. I know it. Because Lulu isn’t going to make us argue over a boys name, are you sweetheart?” It was quiet for a moment before Dan squeezed her fingers. “Time to face the media.”
“Let’s go.”
The first person in a Red Bull shirt they spotted was Simon, a smile spreading across Em’s face as she saw him. He was sticking to hospitality for most of the weekend, but agreed to help out if needed. It didn’t take long for them to be at the paddock gates, Em staring at them with trepidation.
“Good luck. Lewis went in about five minutes ago with Roscoe, that might have pulled some photogs away. People are delighted for you, there’s gonna be good wishes.”
She nodded at Simon before stepping through the gate, scanning her pass and waiting for Dan. It felt so different to a usual race weekend with him. There was no Michael around, no Blake yet, no bags being carried with helmets or gear. That was all coming down, it’d be there. Right now they needed to make it to Red Bull. She’d sit in hospitality or walk down to Aston to say hi to Lawrence, depending on what was going on. It was fine.
“Daniel! Emma! Congratulations! How does it feel to be driving?” The news had filtered out and questions were being thrown around but Dan just smiled and waved as they made it through the paddock. Different kids and fans came up with hats and merch to sign and he signed it all, Em standing there and fiddling with the FEA bracelet that she rarely took off. A couple of parents made small talk with her while the kids got photos with Dan, running off grinning. But finally they were at the Energy Station.
The moment they arrived in there was rapturous applause, a banner across the seating area with “IT’S A RICCIARDO” and a stork on it. Em blushed and grinned while Dan put an arm around her waist to hold her close as he nodded.
“Thanks guys, thanks. Much appreciated. Any idea where I’m supposed to go?”
“Engineering in five.” Christian stepped up as most of the team went back to where they were supposed to be. “Congratulations on the pregnancy. I know I already said it, but I mean it. You deserve some happiness. Em if you want to stay here feel free, or if you want to go up to Dan’s driver room you can. Is Blake around?”
“On his way back from Perth.” Em pulled a notebook from her handbag, flipping it open with practiced ease. “I’m back to work at least until he’s here, he wasn’t going to come back until testing. What do you need?”
“Just wanted to check timings. I got an email from him for four paddock passes, is that right? Charlie Clarke, Callum Clarke, and Dan’s parents?”
“Yeah. Blake’s partner, her brother, and my in laws. Are they ok?”
“Of course, yeah. You know that. Just wanted to be sure, they’ll be ready for tomorrow. We’ve an engineering briefing, Dan’s in the TV pen. I was going to send someone from PR with him, if you want to put a Red Bull shirt on you can follow him recording Em if you like. Whatever suits. Here’s the list of interviewers”
“Thanks Christian. Give me an hour?”
“Of course. See you in a couple Dan.”
She kissed her husband as chastely as they ever could, smiling at him.
“You know this car inside out. You know it as well as you know me. You know how it behaves. They would be putting Yuki in it and putting you in the Alpha Tauri if they had any doubts about you. You can do this, Baby.” Dan smiled and squeezed her hand before he left.
She sat in the hospitality with tea in front of her, her tablet open tracking the flight from Perth as she drank her tea and ran down the list of interviewers. It’d be easy, and her bump was still small enough that a large tee would be wearable. A woman sat beside her and she smiled.
“Em? Right? I’m Carola.” Em smiled at the other woman, switching off the screen.
“Nice to meet you. You’re Checo’s wife? It’s so lovely to meet you, I’ve seen you at a couple of races.”
“You too. Congratulations. This is your first?”
“It’s our first baby, yeah.” It didn’t hurt as much to say that anymore. Admitting it was the their first baby was true.
“It’s pretty great. This is our fourth, I’m due in October.”
They chatted for a few moments, Dan returning a few minutes later with a shirt for her.
“Vicky said she’d do it with me, but if you want to feel free. Wanna do it?”
“Yeah, let’s.” Dan took her hand to help her up. “We’ll talk later? It’s lovely to meet you Carola, but work calls.”
“Oh?” She seemed confused and Em smiled.
“My day job is his assistant. And his manager’s, but Blake isn’t here today. Time to get going!”
She followed Dan to the pen, smiling and staying out of the cameras as he answered the questions. It was mostly about the car and getting into it, but Ted at Sky couldn’t resist it.
“And your wife is at the track with you today, how does it feel to be able to tell everyone you’re having a baby?”
“Well Em is doing the hard work! But yeah, we’re excited. Its been a really, really good week for us.”
“That’s great. Congratulations to both of you.”
Em ended up back in hospitality while Dan was doing more work, but this time making phone calls left, right, and centre. Every hotel had a call in if they had a spare room, and she finally managed to get a caravan delivered to beside where Dan’s motorhome was. They could put Grace and Joe in the motorhome, Callum on the motorhome couch, and the other four would fit in the caravan. It was tight but could do it. Carola sat beside her as she ended the final call.
“Busy?”
“Yeah. Dan’s parents are flying in from Perth, so getting a caravan for them. How’re you? Are the kids here?”
“No they’re at home. How long have you worked with Daniel?” She was quiet as she spoke, younger than Em.
“Nearly four years? Japan 2019 was my first official race, but we were friends and together for years before that. I was complaining about work, Blake needed an assistant, so here I am.”
“He wanted you to travel?”
“Definitely. Being apart hurt. We’re working out how next year will go if he gets a seat, it’s gonna be toughs with a baby. But it’s worth it.”
“You’ll travel with the baby?”
“Definitely. Dan wants to be hands on and around for everything. We’ll make it work.”
“Oh. Well, this is my first time at Silverstone. Can you tell me about it?”
They chatted until Checo came over and saw them talking, speaking to his wife in Spanish before Carola said goodbye and they went to their own motorhome. Dan was a bit longer, coming back and giving her a kiss.
“Have fun?”
“I have a caravan beside your motorhome, and I had a really good chat with Carola. She’s lovely.”
“Checo’s wife?”
“Yeah. She’s sweet.”
The night was filled with nerves for both of them, different to any other race that Dan had done. Nights before fp1 before were easier. He knew the car. This time it was a car he’d never driven in real life before, but she was determined to be positive. He deserved at least that.
The news that the flight had landed woke them up, Blake promising to make their way up after they showered and ate. It’d be fine, they’d arrive in time for fp2 so she could relax then.
The yells for Dan as they walked into the paddock that morning were overwhelming. There was fans wearing ancient Aston Martin Red Bull 3 hats to make them grin, Em following her husband and holding his hand the entire way through.
Usually she’d be working away but Dan had told her to enjoy it. So she was, sitting in the garage with headphones on, watching as GP gave Dan some last minute encouragement. There he was in his race suit, helmet under his arm as he came across.
“Go fast and be safe.” He grinned as she spoke, kissing her quickly.
“I can do this, right?”
“Of course you can. I’m gonna be right here when you come back.”
She stayed in that spot for the full sixty minutes, watching as they got him used to the car. He wasn’t setting the timing screen alight, but he was firmly in the top ten. And in a sick delight that she’d never admit he was above the McLarens. She’d had to keep her mouth shut around Brown at all times, beating Lando and Oscar gave her a joy.
Instead of hospitality for lunch she went over to Mercedes while Dan was in meetings. Susie had promised a chat, and the two women sat in the sunlight with Roscoe sitting on the bench beside them. Em ate her wrap while petting the dog, promising to stay there for a few minutes while Susie ran back in. Now that she was officially the enemy she couldn’t go in like before, but being with someone was fine.
“Emmy!” She turned and saw Grace a little bit away, her mother in law wrapping her in a hug. Em relaxed against her, nodding at everyone else.
“Hey, it’s so good to see you all. Blake, Dan’s in engineering meetings. P6 in practice, Checo was P1. They seem happy so far.” Blake nodded and she watched him kiss Charlie before jogging towards the Red Bull Energy Station. “Welcome to Silverstone. I’m just waiting for Susie to come back and take Roscoe, then I’ll show you around.”
“Em. That’s not…is it?” Callum asked, Em smiling.
“Want to pet Lewis’ dog? He’s so sweet.”
The way Callum lit up petting the dog was great, and it wasn’t long until Susie was back with his lead to take Roscoe inside with a wave. Em led everyone else back to the Energy Station and found a table for them all.
“It’s gonna be a tight squeeze, but we’ve made it work. Grace, Joe, you’ve got Dan’s motorhome-“
“But he needs his-“
“It’s Dan. Do you think he’d be ok if you weren’t being looked after? You’re in there. I managed to get a two bed caravan brought in. It’s tight, but Charlie, you and Blake have one room. Dan and I are in the other. Sorry Cal, you’re stuck on the couch.”
“That’s fine. Thanks, Em. Seriously. I never thought I’d be here.”
“Enjoy every minute of it. You can watch from the garage if you like, or I got you a grandstand ticket too. Whatever you want.”
“You’re amazing.” He reached around her shoulder for a hug, Em giving him one before taking a deep breath.
“I’m just really glad you’re all here. It’s been a whirlwind.”
“How’s the baby?”
“They’re fine. We’re good. Just tired. It’s gonna be a week with everything. But it’s ok.” Dan came by a few moments later with his race suit tied around his hips.
“Navy suits you,” Joe told him and Em could see the pride on her in-laws faces at their son. Dan put his hand on her stomach for a moment as he pressed a kiss to the top of her head.
“Good to see you. We can get dinner later? I’ve been in meetings all day when I’m not in the car, GP reckons they can let me go an hour or so after practice if nothing weird comes up. But practice in ten. Cal, you coming into the garage for it?”
“What?”
“C’mon.” Em went to stand up but Dan stopped her. “Stay there, you’ve been on your feet all day. I’ll be back in a little while.”
“Go fast and be safe.”
“Promise.”
The four who were left stayed in hospitality to watch practice, Em glad to be in the air conditioning. She relaxed with them to watch, greeting Dan as he came back. Their group was just back at the caravans when her phone rang.
“Is that Emma Ricciardo?”
“Yes, it is.”
“Hi, I’m calling from Hilton Silverstone. We have a room available, you said you wanted it?”
“I’ll be there in ten. Thank you!” She hung up and went into the one they were sharing, Callum on the couch looking at his phone.
“Grab your stuff.”
“Huh?”
“I got you a hotel room, c’mon. We’re going. I’m gonna tell Dan, maybe we can give Blake and your sister some privacy.”
“They’re in that new love touchy feely mode. It’s not fun.”
“It is for them.”
She filled Dan in on what she was doing, her husband grinning and kissing her quickly. Grace was making dinner for them all, they’d eat in the motor home and give Blake and Charlie a bit of privacy. When he went into the second bedroom to say it she heard a yell, followed by Dan’s “don’t do anything I wouldn’t do!”
By the time they were outside Callum had his stuff in the boot of Em’s little Fiat, Em sitting in to bring him. Security was strict, showing her pass nearly not enough to get her to the hotel car park. Finally they were in and Callum got out, waving and promising to meet them in hospitality in the morning. He was a grown adult, he could do what he wanted to.
Saturday morning Em was exhausted. Her stomach was filled with butterflies for the last couple of days thanks to stress and nerves, and she was terrified watching Dan go out in the car. But she had to trust everyone on that pit wall had her husband’s best interests at heart. If they didn’t then Dan wouldn’t get in the car.
She’d forgotten what it felt like to arrive at a race as the partner of a driver. It was different compared to Thursday and Friday, now it was the business end of the weekend. It felt like every photo was of her bump, of how she kept one hand on top of it when she was speaking. The hugs her friends gave her were photographed and carefully checked. Chloe had texted her one of her and Lance with a grin and a it’s unfair my brother sees you before I do that Em had sent a selfie back to. Chloe’s fault for being in Colorado with Scotty.
That morning while Charlie and Dan were getting ready Em and Blake had a conversation about what this weekend could lead to. The ultimate goal was a seat for Dan with Red Bull. But Em’s photos with people around the paddock would help with the media game and that was what she had to do. See her friends and people she liked, smile widely and get photos taken. It sucked that she had to, but the more it seemed like other teams were interested the more it would help.
Lawrence had known immediately what was happening, laughing with her and staring around at a photographer.
“Making it seem like we’ll sign Daniel? You know that it was never any of our-“
“Lawrence it wasn’t your fault. Or Seb’s. He apologised to Dan so many times last season. It all started from Monaco. I know for a fact there were discussions with people from Baku. You were at our wedding, you know we don’t blame Aston for anything.”
“I know. But still.”
“But nothing. How’re you doing? How’s Lance, I haven’t really talked to him much.”
They separated with the older man promising that the baby was receiving a bag of Aston Martin merch, Em laughing that Dan wouldn’t let it in the house as she said goodbye.
Practice was spent in the Energy Station, sipping a smoothie while she watched the screen. Joe sat beside her, Grace in the garage to watch for a while.
“Are you doing ok? I know Dan says he is, and I know you’ll pretend to the world you are, but are you really? You didn’t expect this.”
“Nobody expected it. It’s kind of insane.” She ran through the timeline with him, how Dan had come home from filming and in the sim the night before with no idea and then they were running so he’d make meetings and media. As she talked Max came into the room and sat at their table.
“Em. Joe. Sorry for putting Dan out like this, but he’s enjoying being in the car of course?”
“He is. Are you ok?”
In a different world Em thought they could have been close. Dan loved Max like a brother, and Em liked him as a person. But it was the people around him who she couldn’t stand. From the first time they’d met his father tried to make her feel less than, and Dan had told her the story of Kelly trying to ask him out shortly after she and Daniil had split up. She knew better than almost anyone how hard it was to cut those ties, but she couldn’t let herself be close to people who couldn’t cut them themselves.
“Getting there. I’m allowed look at screens now. Of course the crash was not my fault but that’s not something I can say outside. I spoke to Christian and he said we’d talk about it later. But this cannot continue.”
“I’m really glad you’re ok. We were watching, it was scary.”
“Thank you. You will tell Daniel that I was asking about him? They want to film something with the three of us later. He can be the padding.”
“We will. Look after yourself.”
He left and Joe looked at her with a small smile. “If I didn’t know about walls here and ears I’d say something.”
“It’s been bad. That’s all I’ll say.”
Red Bull had done well to hide how awful the relationship between the drivers was, but it was ice cold. Max barely acknowledged Checo when the cameras weren’t watching. There was a reason Dan was the one who was in all the videos with them. Max had only just left when Carola came over, taking a seat.
“Joe, have you met Carola? She’s Checo’s wife, she was so nice to me on Thursday when it was just us here. Carola, my father in law, Joe Ricciardo. I promise he’s not actually scary.” The younger woman smiled, holding out her hand for Joe to shake.
“You all came for the race?”
“Of course. Seeing Dan in a car again? With a team that supports him? The second we got the call we were looking for flights. Emmy had it organised, she was booking them already.”
“It was easier booking all five of you than everyone booking separately. I’m just glad we could.” It was quiet conversation between the three of them until Joe stood up.
“I‘ll stretch my legs. Em, text me if either of you ladies want anything. You don’t need to stand and get it, that’s what we’re for.” He left and Carola looked at Em confused.
“He’s Daniel’s dad, right? He acts like he’s yours.”
“We’re family. I’ve known him since before Dan and I started dating. It’s part of how I know Dan’s going to be such a good dad when the baby arrives. Plus, we’ve got a hard stop on when he’s driving.”
“Why?” The question was tinged with something more than just politeness, but Em kept going.
“He doesn’t want to miss the big events. The baby’s going to start school in 2027, so 2026 will be his last year if he gets a seat. We’ll be in Australia, it’s too far. It’s different for Louise, she’s in Europe. It’s even different for you, you’re in Mexico, right? How long is the flight?”
“Eleven hours to London. It’s ok.”
“Not bad. It’s seventeen from Perth if you get the direct one.”
“So Daniel will retire?”
“Yeah. I do most of the parenting till then, and then we swap. I get to decide what I want to do and he’ll be the main parent. It won’t be easy for us, but it’s what we want. Do you have photos of your kids? I think I saw them in Mexico last year but I wasn’t too well.”
“I remember! Daniel drove well. Here’s the three of them.”
It was oohing and awwing at the kids, Grace coming back and joining in. She pulled out the photos of Isaac and Isabella, Em feeling like she’d joined some secret club of parents who were so proud of their kids and their accomplishments. Carola was quiet, but she was nice to chat to. They’d never really be friends, they were too different, but having someone who knew the fear watching each race was something she could appreciate.
Finally it was time for qualifying. Em watched as Dan brought the car smoothly out of the pits, the car reacting just how he wanted it to. She hadn’t seen it like this since the Renault days, the car moving how he wanted it to. That smile as he put his helmet on, her and Callum standing listening to the radio. It was jarring hearing GP talk to Dan, but it fit somehow. She watched as he did his runs, not even the red flag stopping him from safely making it into Q2.
Em had nearly forgotten what it felt like to not worry about Dan going out in Q1. But she didn’t realise until the car was wheeled back in fully that Checo had been knocked out, the other driver’s face like thunder as he hopped out of the car and started the walk down to be weighed.
“That makes five in a row,” Callum whispered to her and Em shaking her head in response.
“Later. But I know.”
Q2 was tighter. Dan had told her that the only thing that Christian had said to him was he was expected to make it into Q3. Doing that was a good day for him with so little time in the car before now. She held her breath as Logan Sargeant had yet another lap time deleted, Daniel P10 and scraping through. Blake took her hand at the end of the round, squeezing once.
“He’s fine. He’s improving every lap, and he’s got a new set of softs for this. It’s Dan.”
“I know. I know.”
The last round was almost painful. Em held her breath as the chequered flag came out, Dan last to go across the line. He’d been in p10 until that lap, pushing him up into p5 and starting just behind the Ferraris.
“P5 Daniel. Great job, good spot for tomorrow.”
“Ah I’m sorry. It should have been higher.” She could hear the annoyance in himself as he spoke, wanting to hug her husband.
“Dan you did great. Little bit of traffic compromised the lap slightly and you still brought it home. This is a good base to go from tomorrow. Well done.”
The one thing that truly annoyed Em was that this was the first race McLaren had showed true promise in. A tractor of a car last year, unreliable and temperamental the year before, but now it was a front row lockout. Her annoyance at that team would always be there, but this was the time for her to smooth her face and grin because Dan had put in a hell of a performance. And beaten his teammate by eleven grid places. No big deal.
Dan was sent out early that night for an early arrival to the track the next morning. Everyone piled into the weird little golf cart to bring them back to the drivers campsites to relax. They were on the couch when Blake and Charlie stood up and grabbed their jackets.
“Blake’s bringing me on the ferris wheel and for food. There’s some of the nutritionist approved driver meals in the fridge, and I made sure there’s a bag of peach rings for you there too Em. We’ll be gone for oh, I dunno, three or four hours? Have fun!” Em laughed as the two of them left the exact same way she and Dan had the night before, leaning against her husband for a kiss.
“Does it make us old if I say I want food before anything else?” She asked, watching the grin spread on Dan’s face.
“Considering you’re growing a whole extra human no, no it doesn’t. You’re 18 weeks yesterday, right?”
“Yup. Almost halfway to meeting them.”
“Her.” She pushed against Dan to stand up, smiling as he got up.
“Them. We don’t find out for another three weeks. What if they’re a boy? What then?”
“Then I’ll love him all the same. But I just know. This baby is a girl, and she’s gonna be our Luna. Aren’t you, Lulu?”
“You need some food. C‘Mon. It’s an early night for race car drivers.”
Sunday morning dawned too early for both of them, staring at the clock until it was time to get up. It was real. Dan was driving in Silverstone again, and he was going to be in a good car. Em had so much faith in him.
“Promise me something?” She asked as he held her before they got out of bed.
“Anything.”
“Don’t leave anything out there. We don’t know what’s going to happen. But I don’t want you to have any regrets about this race or driving this car. Go out there and focus on driving as well as you can and as fast as you can. I’ve got faith in you, Danny.”
“I love you so much. I’m gonna do it. Alex bet me a hundred pounds that he’ll finish ahead of me. I’ve got to at least beat him.” Em giggled, laughing as Dan turned them over to kiss her before getting out of bed.
Getting ready to go to the paddock felt normal, and when they got into the main area of the caravan everyone was there with breakfast. Grace was cooking bacon and eggs, there were fresh rolls someone had gone out to get, and a big fruit salad in the middle of the table. The five others who were there clapped as Dan came out in an Enchante hoodie, Joe pointing to one of the seats.
“Your mother has food now, cmon and sit down. She texted Michael, he gave her a list of what to make.”
Em was missing the fourth member of their quartet. She’d hugged him briefly on Thursday, but there was so little time to see him. He had a week off in London and had promised to at least get lunch with her which was something. But she ate and laughed and walked into the paddock holding Dan’s hand for the fourth day in a row. They could do this. It’d be fine.
The mornings of races were usually chaotic, and this was no exception. She brought Callum upstairs to watch the F3 and F2 races from the roof of the garages, watching his face light up as he saw the cars battle it out.
“Would you do something like this? Charlie said you want to be a mechanic.”
“Not F1. The travel would kill me. I dunno how you and Dan and Blake do it. But a karting circuit or something, I’d like to help out there. My mates and I go most weeks, I usually help out with the mechanics there.” She nodded at him. All she’d known about him before the trip was he was Charlie’s brother, a massive F1 fan, and he recognised Blake the moment he walked into Charlie’s parents house. But he was smart and polite, and he didn’t let being starstruck stop him from chatting to other drivers. Watching him joke around with Esteban and Lance for a few moments when Lance had come over to say hi to her was a highlight.
Finally it was time for Dan to start going out. The cheer from the grandstand as his vintage car went past made Em grin broadly. No matter what she was going to enjoy this day. If this was the final race it was with people who cared about Dan, who wanted him to do well and loved him. That was more important than anything else.
“Your husband’s popular today.” Christian stood beside her and Em nodded.
“Isn’t it why you hired him? He’s always popular. I just want today to go well for him.”
“It will.” The certainty in his voice nearly startled her. “This is the most relaxed I’ve ever seen him before a race. Ever. I’ve got a good feeling about today.”
Dan came back in and changed before coming down, kissing Em and bending down to kiss her bump. She smiled with watery proud eyes before kissing his cheek.
“Remember what I said this morning. But more importantly, go fast and be safe. I love you.”
“I love you too, Wrinkles. See you on the other side.”
Waiting for the race to begin was an age. There was the trip to the grid, the grid walk playing on the telly beside her, and then the formation lap began. As it did Charlie stepped beside her, holding her hand tightly.
“You ok?” She asked, Em nodding.
“There’s a decent chance a camera will be on my face at some point. But yeah. I will be. I just want to watch Dan and make sure he’s ok.”
One ear on her headphones was Dan’s radio, the other was the commentary from Sky. The cars were lined up and she watched the lights blink off.
“And it’s lights out and away we go! Carlos Sainz had a slow getaway, letting Daniel Ricciardo in the Red Bull get the better of him. The two McLarens are still first and second, but they’ve got a Ferrari less than a second back, and a driver with something to prove currently in fourth.”
“Good work getting away, Daniel. Currently P4, P4, with-“
“I don’t want to know who’s ahead. Let me know if anyone behind me is coming close, but otherwise if I need to know I’ll ask, ok?”
“Understood.”
Fifty two laps went past quicker than Em could have thought. It was terrifying. She watched the screen on lap three as DRS was enabled and Dan slid on the inside of Charles around a corner.
“And I think the last of the late brakers is definitely back with us, that was classic Ricciardo right there.”
“Look at him, it’s such a difference to last year. Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. He’s got his replacement in his sights and I don’t know if this McLaren can hold up much of a fight.”
“He’s not going to make it two overtakes in four corners is oh wait he is! That was skill and talent and trusting the car you’re in. I dare say that rivals a Lewis Hamilton in 2014 or 2015 overtake.”
“I think you’re right Crofty, he’s really making this count. Up to P2 now and we’re three laps in. Meanwhile his teammate lost a position at the start and is currently battling Tsunoda!”
Em stared at the timer, the gap between Dan and Lando dropping from three seconds to two, and finally he was inside DRS range. The rear wing opened and she watched her husband do the overtake on the McLaren car, pulling ahead and going around the corner in a sweeping motion.
The garage erupted in cheers from the pit crew watching the screens, “c’mon Danny boy!” heard from a couple of them. Em kept a hold of Charlie’s hand, breathing deeply with her other one kept steady on her bump. He could do this. He could do it. This was Monaco, but a fully working engine. This was the proof that Dan hadn’t lost everything. That the trust Red Bull had put in him wasn’t misplaced.
As the pit stops happened she rolled her shoulders to get some tension out, but he was still out there. Finally he was called back in, a nearly thirty second gap to Lewis behind him. It was tight, so tight that Em held her breath while he was in the pits, watching as he came out just ahead of Lewis. This was it.
“That’s Lewis one point three behind, try to open a gap so he doesn’t get into DRS. They’ve got some good race pace.”
“What about the McLarens?”
“Behind Lewis.”
“Copy. Clear to push to the end?”
“Clear to push.”
Dan’s soft tyres did what they were supposed to, pushing him forward and propelling him to a gap. Em watched everyone in the garage stand as the chequered flag was waved, her husband in P1 as tears fell down her face. He’d done it. He’d won at Silverstone and he’d won a race and he had nothing left to prove. Nothing.
“I’m sorry. I thought I’d get Carlos at the end. Sorry for not winning it for you.”
“Dan what are you talking about?”
“I’m P2, right?”
“Daniel it’s Christian. You were about to lap Carlos, he got a puncture and had to pit. You did it. You won the race.”
“I won?”
The shock in his voice was clear, Blake holding Em up as she listened. He didn’t even know.
“You won, mate. You’re a British Grand Prix winner and a nine time Grand Prix winner. Come on back in and pull up at the big number one.”
It felt like an instant that Em was pulled down to Parc Ferme, half walking, half running down the pit lane. Blake had one hand and Charlie had the other, and she knew she was on camera but she couldn’t care how she looked because she needed to see her husband right that moment.
The mechanics let her through to the barrier, standing beside GP and Christian. She knew Dr Marko was somewhere nearby but she ignored, focusing on the navy car pulling in and the roar of the crowd as Dan stopped the car. His head tilted forward against the steering wheel before he pulled it out and unbuckled his seatbelt. He got out and stood on the halo for a moment, thumping his chest three times. Em covered her mouth, the memories of Monaco and Monza hitting her full force. That was her husband. He’d won in Silverstone.
She watched him get weighed and then he ran straight across to grab her, leaning across the barrier to kiss her.
“You went fast.”
“I promised, didn’t I?”
“I’m so fucking proud of you right now, Baby. So proud. Go do a shoey for us?”
“Of course.”
She watched him get enveloped by the team, Christian grabbing him for a hug before Dan was brought over for his interview. Lewis and Lando both hijacked it, the younger driver’s “I mean his missus is British so technically this is also his home race, right?” Making the crowd cheer even louder. Finally they were led up to the drivers cooldown room and the podium.
His grin was impossible to miss. Dan stood on that top step, GP on the constructor’s podium as Advance Australia Fair rang out across Northamptonshire. She watched the champagne be sprayed in slow motion, Lewis and Lando taking full opportunity to spray him before Dan pulled his racing boot off and poured into it. The crowd was chanting “shoey” as he drank, holding the boot aloft like a goblet. The other drivers followed suit, even GP taking a sip before pouring the rest of it out. Em felt like she’d burst with pride as her entire family was there with them to celebrate Dan’s success.
It took an age for Dan to be free from press but Em didn’t mind. She walked the paddock to see friends, giving hugs to the drivers she knew well enough. Charles stopped her to specifically congratulate her on the pregnancy, giving a hug and promising to give her Italian baby books so the baby wouldn’t just speak English. He was disappointed after his race so she just hugged him and promised to cheer him on in the next one.
Finally Dan was free, and the hug he gave her was everything. The seven of them went for dinner together nearby, a private room that someone from Red Bull managed to get them. There was a party in his honour from Red Bull, Em insisting Dan at least showed his face at it. By nine he was back in the caravan they were sharing with Blake and Charlie, food on the table for the four of them as they curled up on the couches. Blake was the first one to break the silence.
“Christian asked me for a meeting tomorrow. Me and him while Dan’s prepping for the tyre test. The paddock rumour is Checo and his wife had a fight on Saturday night in his motorhome. She threatened to leave him.”
“Oh shit. Saturday was when we were talking and I told her our plans.” Em explained the entire conversation she had with Carola about Dan being an involved parent and the travel plans they had for the baby. Charlie started giggling as she spoke.
“You psyched her out! You showed her what her life could be like if he wasn’t a cheating cunt - do not shush me Blake Friend I didn’t care about F1 then and I saw the videos - and actually cared about his family. She’s setting her boundaries. Good for her!”
“Which means his seat is empty next season. Nyck’s gone from the summer. Alex Palou in Indycar is Marko’s preferred driver for that seat, but he can only take it after Monza because of the Indy season. He doesn’t know if Lawson can make the step up, and he doesn’t want Iwasa. Plus with the Yuki stuff I dunno.”
“Yuki stuff?” Dan asked as he speared a piece of chicken from the platter.
“Sauber want him. They think he could bring that car into the points regularly and learn from Bottas. So that could be two Alpha Tauri seats open for next year at least. Would you take one?”
“I mean I want Red Bull. But I know even with today it’s not guaranteed. I’d take it if the contract says I’m first driver and have first dibs on a Red Bull seat. But who would take that seat?”
“Max wants you.” Em was the one who spoke, making herself comfortable on Dan’s lap. She and Charlie were each on their partner’s laps, Dan’s hand protectively around her stomach. “We were talking for a few minutes on Saturday. If he got Nyck that seat - unproven Nyck De Vries who’d never been involved in Red Bull - him lobbying for you can get you the seat. We know Christian would be happy to have you back. I say go for the Red Bull. Checo was completely shown up this weekend. I love you Baby and you know I believe in you, but in any other team those results should have been reversed. He shouldn’t be beaten by the reserve.”
“Are you sure you’re ok with that?”
“I’m gonna head over to Grace and Joe, let you guys talk.” Charlie went to get up but Blake kept her still, Em turning to face her.
“You’re involved in this. You get a say. This only happens if it’s four yes votes.”
“I’m not involved in Dan’s career. I don’t need a say.”
“You’re Blake’s girlfriend. The two of you live together even if you don’t admit it. He’s going to be gone for weeks or months at a time and it’s hard. So yeah, you do have a say in this. As someone who was in your position before you definitely have a say.”
It was quiet between them for a few moments as they all thought. Em was the first to break the silence.
“I say yes. It’s going to be hell travelling with a baby, but if you want it then it’s a yes.”
“Yes.” Charlie looked at Blake as she spoke, her head resting on her boyfriend’s shoulder. “I just…yes. Today made me realise why Callum has loved racing for so many years. And yeah it’s gonna be hard and it’s gonna hurt and Blake and I will be moping around when we’re apart. But you’ve got a deadline, right?”
“End of 2026. The baby’s in pre-kindy from 2027, proper school the year after. We want to be well settled before that happens.” His hand rubbed Em’s bump as he spoke, Charlie nodding.
“I can do that. It’s a yes from me.” She faced Blake fully and Em felt like she was intruding watching them as Charlie’s voice got thick. “I love you. And this is going to be so hard. But we know it’ll be hard and that’s how we’ll make it through. We’ll figure it out somehow. But if they’re travelling the world with a baby then that child’s uncle Blake needs to be right there too, yeah? So we’re doing this.”
Blake pushed a kiss to his girlfriend’s forehead. “If Chuck says yes then I say yes. It’s all her.”
Em looked up at Dan, at the determination on his face. Her sunshine boy who’d won nine races, all of them at different tracks. Who deserved the world and who people finally realised was as talented as he’d always said he was.
“Yeah. I really want this. Thanks for letting me try for it.”
“Ooof.” The butterflies in her stomach solidified for a moment, a weird feeling against Em. “Oh my god. The baby agrees. They just kicked I think.”
“What? Seriously?” Dan pushed his hand on her belly and Em could feel the movement properly. Their baby was there and safe and was going to be fine.
“Yeah. They did it again when you pushed. So we’re doing this? Three more years of chaos?”
“Three more years of chaos.”
Em sat against her husband, their best friends on the other couch. Charlie had quickly become someone she trusted more than almost anyone else. She’d kept their secrets, and in return Em was going to do everything in her power to make sure that Blake and Charlie got their happy ending.
The good mood from the win stayed that way the entire night. It was a lazy, lazy night with them watching a movie. Callum texted Charlie that he was down at main stage before going back to his hotel, Joe and Grace stayed in their own motorhome. Everything was hitting Em all at once. Dan won Silverstone. He won her home race. As she went to bed that night it was all that she could think about.
The next morning was chaos. They had hotel rooms booked because of the tyre test, and the caravan and motor home were being taken back by the rental agency. Instead they were packing to move to the hotel, and Em handed Callum her Oyster card before he headed back to London with Grace and Joe. The three of them were staying in Dan and Em’s apartment for the tyre test before they spent time together after it. It was hugs goodbye until Dan and Blake dropped their respective partners off at the same hotel Callum had been staying in. The rooms weren’t ready, but Em and Charlie could sit in the restaurant until they were.
Em hugged Dan goodbye, kissing his cheek.
“Whatever happens this week, you won Silverstone. You have nothing to prove them. Don’t think you do.”
“I love you.”
“Love you too, Dimples.”
Beside her Charlie was doing the same goodbye, slipping her favourite necklace into Blake’s hand.
“What’s this for? You never take this off, you said it’s a family one.”
“Yeah well it’s for the next couple of hours to give you good luck. Not that you need it, but every little helps.”
“Thanks, Chuck. I love you.”
“Love you too. Go get him that seat, yeah?”
Em watched the two drive off before sitting with Charlie to wait. Now they actually knew what might happen she was ready but terrified.

I need advice asap!
Im 21 years old and im a student in college. I work a coffee shop job. My boyfriend is 23 years old and works a full time job as a computer engineer for a company and makes 70k a year if not more. I’m considering breaking up with him, but before why, I’ll elaborate.
Me and my boyfriend live together.
His apartment burned down in late 2022, early 2023. Until he found a place he stayed with me and my family. When he got his place he asked me to move in on a few conditions: id cook and clean.
We have a dog. I handle most of everything for the dog except for maybe walking and play.
My boyfriend and I had a huge fight months ago, nearly a year ago, because when I wasn’t there, I was hanging with friends, he broke into my laptop and searched my messages and found old sexual messages between me and this girl and accused me of cheating. Yet he never broke up with me.
He hardly ever speaks to me and makes it seem like I’m an annoyance.
He doesn’t respect my boundaries and always pushes me
Now he wants me to quit my job and get a serving job so I can pay half the rent as well as my other expenses.
He wanted to visit his parent in Florida and drive using my car. Dealership said my wheels weren’t good and I needed them all replaced. He paid for it and told me I had to pay him back even thought I never asked. He drove my car down there and doesn’t pay shit on it! And is trying to do it again, but I said no this time.
He hardly interacts with my family.
He doesn’t help me financially but expects me to help him. The most she’s bought me is a few books and stuff. When I bought him a 1.2k dollar amp for his college graduation and I was broke, that came out my savings and it burnt in the fire.
I constantly bend over backwards for him and get hardly anything in return. I think our relationship has run its course I just have no idea what to do.
I just need advice I feel so stuck and stupid. Can anyone help me? Mg parents keep telling Me to come back home and finish school, save my money. But idk I’m afraid he’ll expose my sexuality to them cuz he said he would.
Two last things, this is more recent, my boyfriend is supposed to be going to Florida in a few days and I can’t afford to come —context it’s his brothers engagement party—I already expressed this. Not I mention it would be out 3rd anniversary while he is down there and he hasn’t said shit about it. Also instead of helping me he just sends me screenshots of flight costs and shit.
Another thing happened the other night. I got kind of drunk and was sitting on the couch. I wanted to talk to him and was begging for him to come talk to me and sit with me. And he got so annoyed and said he was tired and walked away and kept ignoring me even though I was calling for him. But had energy to play on the video game and laugh with friends and play with our dog not even an hour earlier. His response when i called him on that?
“I worked ten hours today. You didnt.”
Am I the asshole, what should I do?

A teacher at an Islamic Sunday school wanted Muslims to carry out arson attacks in the West, a court heard.
Dzhamilya Timaeva, 19, is accused of spreading “pro-Isis propaganda” by distributing a cartoon-style book calling on Muslims to wage jihad against non-believers.
The Old Bailey previously heard copies of the book, called “Little Muwahideen”, were found in a search of her home by police and that she had already distributed more copies.
On Thursday, it was alleged that Ms Timaeva had a video on her phone called “Incite The Believers” when she was arrested by police at Heathrow Airport’s Terminal Two as she was about to board a flight to Turkey in October 2022.
The clip encourages viewers to carry out arson attacks against buildings, forests and agricultural land in the West if they do not have a gun or a knife, it was heard.
While being questioned by police, Ms Timaeva was shown the film and said: “It’s the first time I watched the video”. But when she was rearrested in March 2023, police found she had made a voice note on her phone bragging about how she had lied to officers.
The court heard she said: “They were going through this sheet of why I was arrested and I was thinking this is nothing this is light work, like you guys have nothing on me.
“I’m sitting there like I’m chilling like I’m not even worried I’m not even scared – nothing! Like I’m so calm.
“And then after the video started on a tutorial on how to make explosives etc etc… and I had saved it on my phone and I forgot because I didn’t even watch the whole video.
“I like the start because it was a nicely edited video… I’m trying not to laugh because cos guys this one is not like me.”
Gareth Weetman, prosecuting, said Timaeva “wasn’t being truthful about not having watched the video”.
“She was not simply a devout Muslim but someone who believed that it was her duty to wage war against non-believers and instil that sense of duty in others”, he said.
‘On the path of Jihad’
Ms Timaeva was due to begin teaching classes at the Tawheed Islamic Education Centre, a Sunday school in Maidenhead, the Old Bailey has heard.
On the day after her home in Windsor was searched in 2023, a teacher at her school found her alone in an office trying to hide shredded paper in a cupboard, jurors heard.
The strips were reconstructed and found to relate to jihad with topics such as “Constants on the path of Jihad” and “Democracy: the modern idol.”
Ms Timaeva, who is on bail, denies disseminating terrorist documents and possessing a document for terrorist purposes between Oct 2022 and Feb 2023.
The trial continues.

Part Of The Band
j.t.k x f.reader
part three
Tumblr media
part two
a/n: present day! how exciting… what's in store for y/n and jake now? will he stay in her past or is there still something there? enjoy :)
word count: 5.2k
warnings: not much; some swearing, mentions of alcohol, references to sex but no smut, a bit of angst if you squint but it's more like sad angst, kind of fluffy. the next chapter will be super juicy! just wanted to fill in the gaps for the time jump
June 2023
“Y/N, did you pack the bath towels into one of your boxes? I can’t find them,” you hear Sophie yell from down the hall. You turn around to look through your boxes, digging through a few of them before finding the towels. “Yeah, Soph, they’re right here!” you reply then turn back to your dresser to pack the rest of your things.
You and Sophie graduated from UCLA a month ago and have spent the last few weeks preparing for this new chapter of your life. You got a Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing, so you could start your life wherever you wanted.
Sophie, however, was a bit more limited on where she could find employment. She graduated with a degree in Entertainment Management, so she had to go to cities where she could use it. After doing research over the past year, she decided to move to Nashville, Tennessee to pursue a career. Knowing that you could continue your work anywhere, especially remotely, and not wanting to live with anyone else, you decide to go with her.
The two of you searched the housing market for weeks before finding your new home. It’s a cute little townhouse in Midtown with a rustic look and two floors, with enough room for you both and affordable rent. Your lease starts on Saturday, so you both are finally packing after weeks of procrastinating.
You guys are mostly finished, but you’re still packing up the small stuff in your bedroom before you pack it all up into the moving truck that will drive your things to your new house. It would take about two days for them to get there, so your flight will leave tomorrow morning for Nashville.
You pack up the rest of your clothes besides the outfits that you’ll bring on the plane and then turn to your vanity to pack up those things. You start adding some of your jewelry to the small box and then pull out a white rope bracelet. Your face drops at the sight of it and you sit down at the edge of your bed, looking down at it in your hands. You still remember the last time that you saw it.
It's been a while since you’ve thought about Jake. You left his hotel that day and returned to your apartment feeling like you’d just awoken from a dream that you never wanted to end. But you would never hear from him again. The holidays hit and then you were flung back into your schoolwork. He was embarking on a new tour with dates in the U.S. and Europe, jumping around from place to place.
You still followed him on Instagram, but his posts were few and far between. You’d get glimpses of him now and then on the rest of the guys’ socials, or the occasional post on the band’s account, but other than that you didn’t see much of him. You kept up with the band a lot at first and it would often cause a harsh sting in your chest, so you decided after a month or two that it would be best if you restricted how much you paid attention to them.
You do listen to the music a lot, though. Going to see them years ago sparked something new in you and you liked it. Josh’s voice especially pushed you to listen to their songs frequently; his voice calmed you and put you at peace when you needed it most. You also found yourself listening to Jake’s guitar solos and reminiscing about what it felt like for them to be played directly to you.
This was all in the past though, and now is not the time to be thinking about the past. You’re about to take a huge step toward your future. When Sophie mentioned the idea of moving to Nashville for the first time, you felt a bit hesitant. You knew that was where Greta Van Fleet lived and spent most of their time, and the last thing you wanted was to see Jake again. You knew that he was a rockstar, touring all over the world. You weren’t his first fan” hookup, and you surely wouldn’t be the last. But Sophie assured you that it was almost two years ago and he probably doesn’t even remember that night. Nashville was a big city, it’s unlikely that you’d see him again, right?
You shook your head to snap yourself out of it and then tossed the bracelet into the box with the rest of the jewelry. You take one more look around your empty room and then start to bring your boxes out to the moving truck. You and Sophie share a bottle of wine, straight from the bottle since you’ve packed all of your glasses, and then head to bed. You have to be up quite early for your flight.
─────── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───────
As your plane starts descending toward the Nashville airport, your chest is lit up with feelings of nerves and excitement. You reach over and squeeze Sophie’s hand, smiling at her and turning back to look out of the window. This was the first time you’ve ever left California, having been born and raised in San Francisco and then attending college in LA. You’d never been on a plane before since your mom had a fear of flying, so your family vacations always stayed within the tri-state area. Now the East Coast was calling your name and you’re more than happy to answer it.
The Uber takes you from the airport to your new place and you and Sophie get out of the car and then take it all in. The truck was already there waiting for you, so the both of you walked up to the house to unlock the door and start unpacking. You watch as Sophie turns the key in the door and pushes it open and you enter the threshold to look at the empty foyer. It feels like a blank canvas and you both can’t wait to start making it your own.
The movers bring in the large furniture, like the couch, dining table, and mattresses, while you start to unpack the small stuff in the kitchen and Sophie unpacks the bathroom items. Once the movers bring everything into the house and leave, you and Sophie realize that you’re quite hungry. You search online for the closest pizza place and order delivery and then you both finish up unpacking the first floor. Once you hear the pizza delivery guy ring the doorbell, the two of you have finished unpacking the kitchen and dining room.
You grab the pizza and place it on your dining table, sitting down at it. You grab a few slices and put it on a plate, taking a bite. “Well, Soph. This is it. Our home. How’s it feel?” you say, looking across the table at her. “Feels great. But I could sleep for a week, babe. I’m so serious,” she replies, taking a bite of her pizza and then throwing her head back onto the back of the chair in exhaustion. “I know, girl. I think we did enough for today. Let’s just make our beds and then take care of the rest in the morning,” you say, eating more of your dinner.
The next day, the two of you finish setting up the living room, the bathroom, and your bedrooms. You went out to thrift stores in the afternoon to find decorations to make the place more personal and homier, which helped a lot. You adorned the living room with cute string lights along the walls and placed some decorative blankets on the couch. You bought a little plant for the coffee table and a vintage table to put your record player on top of, with slots underneath to store your vinyl collection. The kitchen was decorated with cute floral tea towels and curtains along the window by the sink. You bought matching towels for the bathroom as well and a shower curtain to go with it.
In your bedroom, you bought new bedding for your larger bed, having upgraded from a twin to a queen, which is black and white, and decorated with constellations and planets. You unpacked all of your clothes into your vintage wooden dresser and placed all your makeup and jewelry on top of your matching wooden vanity. Amongst your bracelets and rings is Jake’s sailor knot bracelet, which you choose to keep out, despite the moral dilemma.
─────── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───────
You’ve been in Nashville for two weeks now and you and Sophie have finally settled in. Your house is starting to become a home and you’re really starting to like the city. You realize, however, that it’s time to find a job. You want to be more of a freelance writer, taking your own time on your first novel, so you’ll need a part-time job to help pay the rent. It’s July 4th weekend, so Sophie is off today on a long weekend and you decide to use this opportunity to go look around town for job openings.
“Hey Soph, can I take the car out to go look for jobs?” you ask, popping your head into her bedroom. You see her typing furiously away on her laptop and looks up at you when she hears your voice. “Oh, yeah babe that’s fine. I’m just getting some last-minute projects done before tomorrow. Good luck!” I smile as I grab the car keys from the top of her dresser and say, “Thanks, hon. I’ll bring you a coffee on the way back, yeah?” You turn and head toward the door and hear a muffled “Thanks!” from behind you as you walk out the door.
You head further into town and pop your head into a few places; a coffee shop, a vintage clothes store, a convenience store. None of them are hiring, though, and you’re beginning to feel a bit discouraged. As you walk back to your parked car, you see a sign for a building across the street: Rhythm of Space Records. You decide to cross the street and check it out- as if you need to spend any more money on records right now.
As you approach the door, you notice a help wanted sign on the window. Perfect. You open the door and the little bell on top rings, causing the person at the counter to raise their head from scrolling on their phone and look up at you. You approach the counter and she gives you a typical customer service smile. “Hey, welcome in! What can I help you with?” she asks.
“Well, I came to browse your selection, but I just saw on the window that you guys were hiring… Would I be able to apply?” She smiles widely, saying excitedly, “Yes! Totally! Dad’s gonna be stoked, we’ve been needing some extra help around here.” She pulls a piece of paper and a pen from under the counter and slides it over to you.
“Here, you can fill it out now if you want. I can give it right to my dad, he’s just in the office back there. I’m Iris,” she says, reaching her hand out to shake yours. You shake her hand, “Like the song?” you ask. She giggles. “Yes, like the song. My dad is a huge Goo Goo Dolls fan. A big music lover in general, if you can’t tell,” she says, waving her arms around, referencing the store. “Well, I like it. I’m Y/N.”
The two of you chat for a few minutes while you wait for her father to come out from the office. You learn that Iris is 20 years old and studying music at a local community college, commuting from home. She grew up in Nashville and has worked at her dad’s shop since she was 15, which he opened not long after she was born. She tells you that he’s also a musician and likes to play some of the local bars sometimes, inviting you to tag along. It felt nice to finally make a friend in this new city.
Iris’s dad, John, eventually comes out and you hand him your application. He looks it over and the two of you discuss your deep interest in music, and then he says you’re hired. You’ll start your first shift on Monday, opening the shop up with Iris. You accept excitedly, gather a staff shirt with the logo on it, and then head out to your car. You stop to get Sophie a latte before heading home, just like you said you would. You pop into her room to say hi, handing her the drink then heading into your room. You relax for a while and then decide to tuck in early.
─────── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───────
Your alarm goes off at 9 a.m. on Monday and you roll out of bed to take a shower. You throw your long, wet hair into a loose braid down your back, leaving your curtain bangs hanging out to frame your face. You fix your bangs slightly with a blow-dryer and hairbrush before heading downstairs to have a quick bowl of cereal before leaving for work. The store is only about a fifteen-minute walk from your house, so you enjoy the short walk in the warm Nashville weather. Nashville is definitely a bit cooler than California in the summer, but it’s still warm enough for you to break a bit of a sweat.
You near the store and see Iris leaning against the window, looking down at her phone, waiting for you. “Morning,” you say as you approach her. She looks up at you and half-smiles, looking very groggy. She’s clearly not a morning person. “Hey, Y/N,” she says tiredly, then turns around to unlock the door. The two of you step into the store and she locks the door behind you. “There’s a coffee machine in the back room. We’re gonna need it,” she says, B-lining it to the back of the store. You follow her to the back and watch as she adds water and turns the coffee machine on.
“We really have to do inventory today. It sucks, I know, but if we both work together we can try and get it done before the shift change at 2.” She pours out a mug of coffee, handing it to you, which you happily accept. She then pours herself one, takes a sip, and then steps out into the main area of the store. She checks her watch, the time says 9:58. “Alright. Time to open up,” she says, heading to the front to unlock the door for the day. “I can start with the first half of the alphabet, if you wanna do the last half? Split up at M?” you say, to which you see her nod and then head to the other side of the store.
You start to go through every record from A to M, which is a lot. This store was certainly stacked with vinyls- you’ve been going through them for an hour and a half now and you’ve only just gotten to the G section. Combing through the albums and taking notes of what you have in stock, you come across a familiar album cover: Greta Van Fleet- The Battle at Garden’s Gate. Shit. You take it out from the rest of the records and look at it for a moment, a small frown spreading over your face. You start to run your fingers over the cover, feeling the texture of it, then place it back in the bin with the rest. You try to shake it off, not wanting to distract yourself from your work.
Two hours later, you’ve finished inventory and are taking some time to look around the store a bit more. You’re combing through the CDs on the far wall with your back facing the door when you hear the bell on the door jingle. Iris is closer to the door at the moment, so you decide to just let her handle it and don’t turn around to look in their direction. As you continue looking through the CDs, you feel a hand on your shoulder. You jump, feeling startled since you thought that you were standing there alone.
“Oh, I’m sorry, you scared me-” you say, turning around to face them. That’s when you saw him. Jake. In the flesh, only a few feet away from you. Your eyes widen and your jaw drops slightly at first before you realize how crazy you must look and quickly pull yourself together. The moment that you’d been dreading ever since moving here has finally arrived. You start to open your mouth and say something, but he beats you to it.
“Y/N! What are you doing here? I haven’t seen you since…” he says with a shy smile, trailing off as he looks at you and takes you in. It’s been so long now, you’ve both changed so much. He’s cut his hair short now, just above shoulder length. He has some lingering facial hair, still clean-shaven but there’s some stubble there. Last you’d seen him online, around the end of last year, he’d had long hair and remnants of a mustache, which was a bit rugged-looking. This new look suited him.
He still dressed the same as the last time you saw him. A half-buttoned button-up, tattered jeans, and boots. His eyes are concealed by dark sunglasses, but you can still see hints of them through the glass. Despite being covered, you can feel them boring into you, studying you. You finally manage to get a sentence out after getting over the initial shock of it all.
“Jake… Hi,” you say, locking eyes with him. You watch his gaze soften as he looks at you, and you go on to answer his question. “Sophie and I just moved here a few weeks ago now, she wanted to work here after graduation and I don’t have much of a direction yet, so I decided to come along…” you say shyly, starting to avoid his eyes now out of nervousness when you see his face drop a little.
“A few weeks… why didn’t you call me?” he asks, a hint of pain in his voice. You really didn’t think he would care, you thought that he’d long forgotten about you. You pause for a moment, unsure of what to say. You didn’t want to offend him, but you had hoped to never have to run into him out of fear of awkwardness. “Jake, I-,” you start, reaching over to place your hand on his arm, “I honestly wasn’t sure if you would want to hear from me… I haven’t seen you in nearly two years, I didn’t want to bother you. I kind of figured that you’ve forgotten about me by now.”
He reaches up to his face to remove his sunglasses, sliding them into his shirt pocket. He looks up to meet your eyes again, with a disappointed look in his eyes. “Sweetheart… how could I ever forget about you?” he says, bringing his hand up to brush some of your bangs out of your face. “I told you that I wouldn’t forget you, didn’t I?”
You lean into his touch a bit and nod, “I know, I know. I just- it had been so long since I’d heard from you, I thought that maybe that’s what you say to all of the girls you…” your sentence is cut off as you see someone with a Rhythm of Space shirt on enter the shop, walking in with Iris’s dad. This must be your relief for the day, you think.
You look over to the left and see Iris watching you, smirking at you and raising her eyebrows when she catches your eye. Rolling your eyes, you look back at Jake, whose eyes still haven’t looked away from you. “You know what, I’m about to get off work. Can you wait here for a few minutes while I clock out and gather my things? I won’t be long. We can go somewhere to talk,” you say, looking up at him hopefully as you wait for a response. You watch the corners of his mouth turn upwards as he says, “Yeah, I can wait.”
You turn around and walk behind the counter to clock out on the register. You go into the back room and grab your bag, taking off your work shirt and replacing it with a baggy Beatles t-shirt. You leave the back room and Iris smirks at you, saying “Enjoy the rest of your day, Y/N,” teasing you. You jab her side with your elbow jokingly as you walk past her and then return to Jake, who has put his sunglasses back on, covering his eyes once again as he leans against the window with his hands in his pockets.
“Know any good places to go around here? I’m still new, so I haven’t exactly claimed any regular haunts just yet,” you say, trying to lighten the mood with him a bit. He smiles and says, “Yeah, I know a place,” opening the door for you to walk through, then following you out.
His car is parked right in front of the store, which you notice as he unlocks it with his eyes and then opens the passenger side door for you to get in. It’s a nice car, which doesn’t surprise you given the level of fame they’ve risen to. He rounds the car and gets in on the other side, sitting down and starting it. You drive for about five minutes before pulling into the parking lot of a cozy-looking diner.
─────── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───────
Jake walks up to the hostess stand to get you both a table and you sit down at a little booth in the corner of the restaurant. The place has a retro aesthetic and each table is decorated with a mini jukebox where you can enter song requests from the catalogue. The waitress comes to bring you glasses of water and you take a look at the menu.
“This place is so cute!” you say, looking up at him. He’s smiling down at the menu to himself and says “I thought you might like it. This is Josh’s favorite place.” The idea of that makes you happy, knowing that you and his twin were so similar. “I should have guessed. Josh has great taste…” You order a cheeseburger and fries and Jake gets a sandwich. Now, here comes the hard part.
He takes his glasses off and slips them into his shirt pocket again, then laces his fingers together and places his hands on top of the table. His dark, chestnut eyes look into yours with a hint of sadness. He takes a deep breath and then decides to break the silence. “Y/N… I’m really sorry that I didn’t reach out after that night. Things really took off after the end of that tour and it got the better of me. I should’ve checked in with you,” he says, reaching across the table to place his hand over yours. You flick your eyes down to where your hands met and then back up to him, smiling timidly.
“Jake, you didn’t owe me anything. We only spent one night together, I’m sure you’ve spent plenty of nights with lots of different girls. I didn’t want to hold onto the hope that this was something more than it was.” You look up at him to wait for his reply, and he seems wounded by our words. He shakes his head a bit and squeezes your hand lightly.
“I never intended to make you think that I didn’t care for you. Because I do. More than I ever thought was possible. That wasn’t just a one-time thing for me, you’re not just another girl. You walked into our show blind, not knowing the band or who I was, and when I looked at you in the crowd, I could tell that you just saw me for me. Not just a rockstar in your favorite band, or someone who you can use to get whatever you want.”
He brings his hand from your hand to your cheek, cupping it and stroking it with his thumb sweetly. “You saw me and you heard my music and that was all you cared about. I’ve never had that before, ever. It’s something that I’ve been chasing ever since and I still haven’t been able to find it anywhere else, even after all this time…”
Your eyes soften as you look at him and how he’s pouring his heart out to you. “I’m sorry that I didn’t call. I wanted to, I just… I guess I felt embarrassed. I didn’t want to bother you after all this time if I was just one night to you. I wasn’t sure if you’d felt the same way and I didn’t want you to think I’d moved here for the wrong reasons, like I was obsessed with you or something.”
He continues to rub his thumb along your cheek as he answers. “Sweetheart, you were never just one night to me. I haven’t been able to stop thinking about you ever since that night. Not just because of how good you felt under me,” he says with a smirk, “but because of how well you got along with my family, your love for music, and the kindness in your heart. You’re one of a kind, Y/N.” “Can we start over?” you ask, looking up into his eyes. “Yeah. We can start over,” he says with a smile.
The food comes shortly after and the two of you catch up as you eat. You learn that they finished their last huge tour a few months ago and that they have a new one planned to start in just two weeks. Their album comes out in two weeks as well, which he seems quite proud of. They worked on it for a long time while touring and Jake describes it as the best he’s ever made, sonically. You tell him that you look forward to listening to it, which makes his face light up.
You’re on your way home now, and you look over at him as he’s driving. You can see his eyes behind his sunglasses as they face the road, still dark and alluring as ever. You want to just lean over and bring your lips to his, closing the gap that’s been open for years, but you know that it can’t work that way. Just because you didn’t reach out doesn’t change the fact that he hasn’t either.
From what you know now, he had been back in California in March for their Dreams in Gold tour and he didn’t call either. The two of you have a lot to figure out and need to get to know each other now. You didn’t spend very much time together all those years ago, so there was a lot that you didn’t know about each other. There was a lot of lost time to make up for, and you know better now than to give in to him so soon.
You pull up to your house and Jake puts the car in park. He rests his arm on the center console and then brings the other up to brush some of your hair out of your face. “Can I take you out? A proper date, I’ll wear my best dress for you,” he jokes, smirking at you. You pretend to think about it, bringing your fingers to your chin, and say, “Hmm… I suppose I’ll have the time. But that dress better have cleavage or else I’ll turn right back around.” He chuckles and caresses your cheek with his thumb and then unlocks the car doors.
You grab your bag and open the door, stepping out of the car, and he says, “Same number, right?” You nod, smiling shyly as you shut the door and walk up to your front porch. You turn back around and see him still sitting there, smiling at you. You wave goodbye then head into the house, shutting the door behind you and leaning your back against it, sinking to the floor. You throw your head back against the door and groan, feeling so exhausted by the day you’ve had. The noise causes Sophie to pop her head out of the kitchen, making a confused face as she sees you sitting on the hardwood floor.
“You good there, babe?” she asks, walking toward you. You shake your head and she leans down to join you on the floor. She lets you rest your head on her shoulder as she rubs circles into your back for a moment then asks, “What happened?” You lean back to look at her. “I saw him, Soph. He came into my work this afternoon. We went to lunch and we talked a bit but I just don’t know… I feel like shit. He asked me why I didn’t call him and he just looked so sad. I didn’t even have a good answer for him. The only reason is that I was scared, and that’s a stupid reason,” you say, throwing your head against the door again.
“We said we’d start over, get to know each other better. He wants to take me to dinner later this week.” Sophie looks at you with a sympathetic expression and says, “Well, that’s good, babe. Right?” You think about it for a moment. “I don’t know. What happens if I get too attached? He’s leaving for another tour in two weeks and will be gone for god knows how long. We’re not really labeling it and I’m just gonna be here, while he’s playing all around the country. What if I just get my heart broken?” you say, standing up from the floor and pulling Sophie up with you.
“Don’t think about it like that, hon. He can only hurt you if you let him. Just give it a chance, you never know,” she says, rubbing your arm affectionately. You sigh. “You’re right. I’ll think about it. I’m gonna go lie down,” you say, then head upstairs to your room.
You flop onto your bed and curl up under the covers, full of questions and anxiety. You pull your phone out of your pocket and finally take it off of Do Not Disturb, which has been on since you left for work this morning. Much to your surprise, you already have a message from Jake.
Sir Jacob⚔️: Friday night? 8 o’clock?
You: perfect :)
You: thanks again for lunch. i really enjoyed it.
Sir Jacob⚔️: Anything for you, sweetheart. I’ll pick you up at 8.
You: you’re sweet. see you then
You plug your phone into the charger and then stand up to get changed. As you’re grabbing comfier clothes from the dresser, you see Jake’s bracelet sitting there on the vanity next to it. You pick it up and look down at it. Finding this a few weeks ago was a bit of a premonition, huh? Still, you smile to yourself and decide to slide it over your wrist before getting changed for bed. You tuck in and close your eyes, wondering what the next few weeks will bring for you.

Park Jimin really stimulates my vagus nerve.
That's not what you think it is.
Tumblr media
Well yes, I'm only human too...
Tumblr media
but that's not what I'm talking about here...
I'm talking about AWE.
Different from joy or admiration, awe is an emotional response to something - or someone - vastly impressive or beautiful or inspiring (or all of the above in the case of Park Jimin).
Tumblr media
Awe is that "oh, wow" feeling.
Sometimes it's inspired by a feat of courage or a grand performance. Other times it's something so beautiful it makes you breathless (or both in the case of Park Jimin).
Tumblr media
The key is that it is triggered by something that is outside of the everyday experience, maybe beyond understanding. It has to be mesmerising, remarkable, wonderful (or all of the above ...yeah you know where I'm going with this).
Tumblr media
So what does this have to do with my vagus nerve?
I'm glad you asked!
The vagus nerve (no, thats not it. It means wandering) is the nerve that links your brain basically to the rest of your body. It reaches from your brain stem all the way through your abdomen.
Tumblr media
The vagus nerve controls your automatic responses. This is the nervous system that's responsible for that swooping feeling in your belly (when you when you look at pictures of Park Jimin) as well as the racing of your heart (when you watch Park Jimin dance).
Tumblr media
Your vagus nerve is active in both directions. Your brain will send messages to your body via the vagus nerve (fight or flight as an example) but you can also use it to reduce stress and anxiety. You can engave your vagus nerve to down-regulate your stress response.
How can you do that? One way is by experiencing awe.
Tumblr media
I'm not making this up.
Scientific studies have proven this. Besides the rush of endorphins when you have that "oh wow' response, awe reduces the focus on yourself and shifts your perspective. That's good for your physical and emotional health for a bunch of reasons.**
So, looking at pictures of Park Jimin and watching him dance can improve your health?
Yes, that's right!
Tumblr media
Ask your GP to prescribe a daily dose of Park Jimin for continued good health. Or take matters into your own hands and make him part of your daily self-care routine.
You can thank me later.

Hello To All!
Hope you all are enjoying your weekend! I read on my phone and I’m not able to find stories. If there’s a way, please tell me how.
Please suggest adult stories for me with a great/happy ending. I prefer chapter stories of adult Klaine. Any suggestions are welcome. Need something to read tonight. Thank you for all you do!
Hello, when I search from my phone, I go onto our libary blog and into the "magnifying glass/search" at the top. I type in a particular word like "adult" or "enemies to lovers" and then a whole lot of previously recommended fics appear. Alternatively download A03 app, and you can search and filter on it.
Also on AO3 check out our 2023 Klainebingo which has 191 tagged stories written 2016-23 that fandom have recommended - not all adult klaine, but definitely worth looking at.
What I've done is made a list of recommendations here of some of Klaine fics I've enjoyed, where they are adults, or mostly post college age. Some newer, some older. ~ Jen

The Journeying By @flowerfan2
Freshly graduated from music school, Blaine is thrilled when he is chosen to stay in the cast when the production of Into the Woods he was lucky enough to be part of in Boston moves to Broadway. He knows it’s going to be hard returning to New York City – the scene of his epic breakup with his fiancé and the emotional meltdown which cost him his place at NYADA. But he’s determined that this time, everything will be different. Little does Blaine know that out of thousands of potential castmates, his director has chosen none other than Kurt Hummel to play the part of Jack. Blaine has worked hard to recover from their breakup three years ago, and struggles to find a new way to relate to Kurt and simultaneously protect himself, especially when tragedy strikes.
This story looks at what would have happened if Kurt and Blaine had reacted differently to the break up in 6x01 than they did in canon; if events hadn’t brought them back together as soon, and if forgiveness hadn’t come so easily.
