Ok, so I'm taking a little brake from the searated au now that the first chapter is done, I'm still gonna do some doodles and answer asks but I'm not gonna work on the next chapter any time soon (maybe do some thumbnails on my sketchbook but that's it)
I want to focuse again on my httyd kidnapped au, because I've left it unatended for way too long now, I was checking my wip folder last night and I have two full chapters in thumbnails (I think I was halfway trought ch3 on my sketchbook) and almost have all the first chapter in sketch stage, so hopefully it wont take me too long to post more pages
right now I think I'm just gonna doodle some poses to get used to the characters again

oh my goodness gracious me
guess who just finished playing the Redwall mobile game "the lost legends of redwall"
I'm specifically coming on here bc nobody is talking about it and it's got some of my favourite characters ever, probably because it's a game and you can feel a lot more in tune with the characters or something yadda yadda
anyways I just went through such an emotional roller-coaster with the last story specifically. for some context it's another version of the "escape the gloomer" Redwall mobile game. I have so much emotional attachment towards the main otter Gillig I literally can't stop thinking about him, I used to play escape the gloomer all the time but I never got to finish it because you have to pay to play most of the game- but literally as soon as I saw "Gillig" in the description for the story I was like "WAIT A MINUTE YOU MEAN MY BOY?? MY SWEET ANGEL WHO CAN DO NO WRONG???!"
I love this stupid little otter so much
But anyways here's spoilers so if you were planning on playing this pls scroll past
The ending literally shook me to my core
Do you understand how many times I died trying to succeed in this mission 😭 I swear I was sat debating over which option would get me in the least trouble at every decision. And can I just say for a moment how much shit Gillig went through, attacked by snakes, cats, insane water rats and probably more?! And I also want to say that Skipper calls him KID. HE'S ONLY A WEAN, I know that media does that where they say kid just because one person is older, and it's not always because the person is an actual child. But I can't think of anything that hinted towards how old this little guy is (obvi ik that its an older time period and all the other characters were probably incredibly young when fighting huge searats and stuff *stares directly at Matthias* but let me cook)
All of the gloomer fight scenes had me SWEATING. every scene had me on the edge of my seat. Especially in the final battle where they're fighting underwater and the gloomer bites to bone in Gillig's shoulder and he states that it goes numb and he can't feel it. I was so worried for him the whole time.
AND THEN AT THE END SKIPPER JUST PULL HIM TO THE SIDE AND BASICALLY SAYS HE WENT THROUGH ALL OF THAT FOR NOTHING. My jaw dropped so fast like bro is not serious rn, but I forgive Skipper because he didn't know the bloody gloomer lived and he said he wouldn't have sent him down there if he'd known.
Also Skipper is such a good leader man I love him, AND THE WHOLE STORY WAS BASICALLY GILLIG TRYING TO MAKE SKIPPER PROUD. When Skipper said he was proud at the end I was Joyous, I'm proud of him too Skipper.
Sorry 4 the long post I can't help myself sometimes 😔💔
Shout out to Gloria for carrying our ass across the finish line and basically carrying the entire plot. ❤️❤️❤️

Speaking of Cluny's characterization, did you know that four out of the twenty-two books have rats as their main villain?
Mariel of Redwall with Gabool the Wild, a searat
Redwall (of course) with Cluny the Scourge, a bilge rat
The Long Patrol with Damug Warfang, a greatrat (apparently)
and Loamhedge with Raga Bol, written in the wiki just as "rat."
Interesting, huh? That's 18%
Ooooooo do I have the mind to bring an old project backkkk!!

I'm sure this has been discussed before, in years past when Redwall was a more active fandom, but. Man Brian Jacques really just flat out forgot what Rufe Brush's personality was supposed to be between Mariel of Redwall and The Bellmaker, didn't he.
I was all for giving him the benefit of the doubt, like maybe since Rufe gets more spotlight in Bellmaker we're just seeing a new side to him or realizing that his "strong, silent" persona was actually just shyness.
But no, Rufe straight up goes from stoically helping lead the Abbey's defenses against Graypatch in one book, to cringing and flinching at the thought of stealing the Pearl Queen in the next. The shrews lend him a rapier and he barely knows which end he's supposed to point. Like buddy why are you shivering in your boots at the thought of facing down a searat crew when you were literally chucking javelins at a different searat crew in the last book you were in.
I'm just going to pretend that Rufe Brush post-Mariel left the abbey to go keep watch for bandits in the woods and left his bellringer duties to his younger and more timid brother, also named Rufe Brush.

probably not the best response, but I’m so annoyed by the data breach. And people being like no worries, to protect your data you just have to make three separate accounts with three searate companies and freeze your credit! Easy! First of all I hate making accounts. Second, this wasn’t my fuck up. Whatever entity was hacked to leak our info should be taking proactive steps to mitigate the damage. YOU should be locking everything down.

i think some of my headmates would drink blood but i personally wouldnt bc salty. but also like. im not as connected to vampirism as the others are so that. we <3 fruit punch & also the red koolaid packets. sometimes we get koolaid packets and purposely dont put enough water so it gets kinda bitter. top tier. also red soda is >>
does being a vampire affect being a bat? like, do they overlap or do they feel pretty searate?
Frankie would probably be the only one in our collective who isn't into the idea of blood drinking. Frankie only drinks energy drinks. It's very frankenmonster of them. /lh
For being a vampire and a bat.. They actually don't really overlap. It's more of them being pretty separate, with only some similarities like blood cravings and loving the night. Ula's is more blended (she's a bat as well but not to the level I am) but I can't remember exactly how.

The Lost Legends of Redwall: The Scout Anthology announced for PS5, Xbox Series, PS4, Xbox One, and PC
Gematsu Source
Tumblr media
Publisher Forthright Entertainment and developer Soma Games have announced The Lost Legends of Redwall: The Scout Anthology for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC (Steam). It will launch on December 1.
The Lost Legends of Redwall: The Scout Anthology includes the complete story of The Lost Legends of Redwall: The Scout as told across three acts.
Here is an overview of the game, via Forthright Entertainment:
About
Step into the epic, story-rich world of Mossflower in the first official Redwall story since 2011. The Lost Legends of Redwall: The Scout Anthology is a linear action–adventure game told in three acts. Play as Liam or Sophia, the newest member of the Lilygrove Scout Corps, as the young mice find themselves on the journey of a lifetime to save their home from ruthless pirates. Will they reach Redwall and save their friends before all is lost?
Story
Act 1 – After months of training, betrothed mice Liam and Sophia are ready to graduate into fully-fledged Scouts: a group of woodland rangers tasked with the protection of the land and trained in the ancient ways of woodcraft. Their initiate ceremonies are cut short when sea rats attack their beloved home. As the senior Scouts rally for battle, it’s up to the Scout Corps’ newest recruit to outwit the enemy, light the beacon, and summon aid from the surrounding woodlands – before there is nothing left to save.
Act 2 – The beacon is lit, troops rally to fend off the invading searats, and Liam reunites with his dear Sophia beneath the Lilygrove Lighthouse, but not all is well. Scumsnout’s vengeful cries can be heard in the distance and it is revealed that our Scout’s betrothed has been poisoned by the wereat’s venomous bite. With no time to spare, the couple race to the Winsome Wraith, where a mysterious and dangerous stoat may have the antidote they seek. As if things weren’t bad enough, the sea rats are moving inland and the shadow of a large predatory bird lurks just at the edge of the woods.
Act 3 – After being mortally poisoned by Scumsnout’s vicious maw, our young Scouts have made it to the Winsome Wraith in one piece, if just barely. While the mysterious stoat’s treatment has bought some precious time, Liam and Sophia must now travel the rest of the way to Redwall Abbey for a more permanent cure. This is the dramatic conclusion of their journey through the murk of Portman’s Slough, the miraculously-functioning puzzles of Grating Gulley, and the ancient ruins of the Otters’ Den.
Key Features
A brand new original story set the winter before the events of the first book.
A stunning woodland world inhabited by charming critters and villainous vermin.
Two characters with divergent dialog for replayability.
Unique real-time scent mechanic fitting for woodlanders who experience the world primarily through their noses.
An assortment of achievements and collectables for the completionist spirit.
Original soundtrack created especially for fans of Redwall.
Fully voice acted by a talented cast of new and established actors.
Engaging puzzles and side stories for those who delight in world building.
Mechanics
The Lost Legends of Redwall: The Scout Anthology debuts a dynamic scent system unlike any game before it. Rather than stagnant, pre-designed paths that imitate scent, particles read the wind and the environment to simulate realistic currents and pools. Scents themselves consist of parts and patterns designed around real scent theory.
When traversing the world of Mossflower, you make use of your mouse agility to explore the world in a unique and wondrous way. Shimmy along ledges, scramble sheer cliffs, and even squeeze through impossibly small spaces. With courage, faith, and friends by your side, Mossflower’s fate rests in your paws!
Rely on stealth, wit, and agility to evade your enemies. Manipulate dull-witted vermin with scent and scent to avoid getting caught in their grubby paws.
Use your trusty way glass to scope the area and identify danger. Rely on your home-made slingshot to solve puzzles, break pots, and activate traps.
Decide if you will prioritize the mission and leave the others to save themselves or take the time to lend a helping paw. Some may praise philanthropy, still others would praise pragmatism.

Thoughts on Mattimeo, Mariel of Redwall, and Triss
Phew only like 4 5 books left until I'm done! (once again I forgot Rakkety Tam) One of those books is Doomwyte and I already know one note, so I'll say it here - I think that's the only time we see a ruler of Redwall with a child.
Also ... out of all the main female characters, Mariel, Tiria, and Triss are just boring. They're no Dottie or Maudie, or Song and Rose.
Mattimeo
Legit skipped the Redwall bits after the main group left.
It's interesting to revisit the ruins of Loamhedge but literal centuries (probably) before the titularl book
Mariel of Redwall
I feel like this is the last story that had Martin like...this much of a Jesus entity. He's extremely involved in this novel, talking to like 5 characters, possession Saxtus to put the sword by Dandin
Speaking of which, Dandin openly kills a sea vermin(“I didn't come here to take you alive!”) meanwhile, Triss is cheated out of her vengeance on Kurda, a trend that would continue intermittently (but be subverted in the best of the latter books, Eulalia!)
It's not a huge loss to not have these things, but I do wish we saw a few more stories that took place in the South Islands. They're not written the best but with practice, they would have been great.
Triss
If I had a nickel for every time that a pale character in a fantasy series was called Kurda and was killed by falling on something pointy, I have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird it's happened twice
I bet the audiobook has the most stereotypical German accents for the Pure Ferrets.
I said in the Loamhedge recap that Martha and Horty were the first hares to just exist at the Abbey separately from Salamandastron and had never gone but nope here's Memm Flackery.
Turfee the mousebabe scowled darkly. “They scrubs likkle ones t’death in this h’Abbey.” this fellow has had enough 😭
She said you were supposed to be like that old Badger Lord she’d read of, Russano the Wise, her fifth great-grandsire. So she called. So why doesn't Lady Merola rule? The title Ruler of Salamandastron is a little too arbitrary bc it can be decided through prophecy and dreams as well as lineage, but there is canonically one female Badger Lord in Spearlady Gorse. Would have been nice to have another, even as a minor character.
“It’s called bamboo. My father has a piece of it in his collection of searat stuff. He said it comes from the hot lands beyond the ocean.” How many people reading this did not know the bamboo was a real thing? I mean I knew but imagine being like 10 living in Wales reading this. There's things I've read or seen that I didn't know were real until later. Like the song Hanging on the Telephone.
Ok this is the second time where a name is either similar (Grubbage\ Grubitsch) or spelled exactly like one in a Darren Shan series.
I wonder if Peace Island is the same mountain as Holt Rudderwake.
A thing I enjoy is how some of the chapter art looks. 25 in particular is a great use of the fact that the print is limited to black and white.
Why didn't the adder trio eat the body of the king? How did it not decompose over years? Because it was sheltered in Brockhall? What about - it's a children's book I should relax.
It's endearing how they call her Trissy.
They mention Grubbage was considered a captive at the Abbey but the recorder liked him well enough, calls him jolly. So that's the (2nd? 3rd?) “good” rat in the series to temporarily stay at the Abbey. No one mentions it bc it's two lines and no one rereads this book.
Overall Triss was one of those I barely remember and remember as being what people think of when they think of formulaic Redwall. It manages to rise above it a little - Crikulus and Melbun behaving foolishly is interesting - but nothing else really is

Releasing Today, Feb 20, 2024!
Got a couple games for today:
Nightingale is a PvE Survival Crafting FPS with a Victorian steampunk theme. It's definitely a fantasy vibe over the Bioshock Infinite vibe people think of in steampunk now. Looks promising - I like that it has bosses and characters from stories like Around the World in 80 Days and Frankenstein.
So there's also a Redwall game coming out. Well, it already came out in like 2018, but wikipedia has no idea what really happened with the last 4 episodes but they're supposed to be in here? The page only has 3 acts so I have no idea what happened to the original roadmap. It's a 3D platformer.
Idle fields is a cute clicker game where you hire workers to farm and fish.
Contrasting to the last game, Lazaret is a FPS horror game taking place in a ship where you have to run/hide from a scary Big Daddy-esque diver.
Qomp 2 is a sequel to Qomp, an Atari-funded indie twist on Pong but the ball wants to go do something else. The original game controlled with one button, but this one... controls with two. Um... It at least looks fun. (I know it's funded by Atari but how many times has Atari gone bankrupt I swear)

Redwall Reread #1: Lord Brocktree
1st in chronological order, 13th in publication order (2001)
(major spoilers under the cut)
Summary: The Badger Lord, Brocktree of Brockhall, journeys to the legendary mountain of his ancestors, Salamandastron, to liberate it from the cruel wildcat tyrant Ungatt Trunn.
Framing Device: A Badger Lord many years after Brocktree's time is sharing this story with the greater Salamandastron community: his wife, two kids, the hares of the Long Patrol, and various seaside neighbors.
The Goodies: Primarily Brocktree (da badger on da quest) and Dotti (a young hare, headed to Salamandastron to visit her aunt.) Along the way they pick up Ruff the river otter, Gurth the mole, and a veritable shitton of other critters, including shrews, hedgehogs, and hares of the regular and mountain variety. Meanwhile, back at the mountain, we've got Brocktree's dad, the elderly Lord Stonepaw, and his host of similarly elderly warrior hares. One of these hares, Fleetscut, is sent on a quest to recruit younger warriors; he is saved and then joined by Jukka and her tribe of squirrels. In the last third of the book, a team of sea otters joins the fight.
The Baddies: Ungatt Trunn (wildcat), leading a horde of vermin (rats, weasels, foxes, etc.) all of which have dyed their fur blue. It is his Blue Horde, and there are a lot of them. There's a major nautical component to the army--they come in on ships, and a lot of their number are former pirates--but Trunn himself is a landlubber from the mountains. Truthfully I don't know where he got this incredibly massive army (arguably the largest in Redwall history), but I'm gonna say it was daddy's money. Notable underlings include the stunted fox magician, Groddil, a ferret called the Grand Fragorl, the rat captain Mirefleck, the stoat captain Fraul, the fox captain Karangool and the searat brothers Ripfang and Doomeye.
The Freakies: CRAB MOMENT 🦀🦀🦀!!! Additionally, a big pike.
The Birdies: A flightless, short-eared owl named Udara Groundslay and a (nonverbal) grey heron named Rulango.
Noteworthy Locations: Primarily Salamandastron and the surrounding coastal area. Also Mossflower Wood, pre-Redwall Abbey. Everything inbetween falls into the category of "somewhat arid open country", though I'd say King Bucko Bigbones' Clearing deserves a special mention as a sort of verdant oasis in all that sad scrubland.
Noteworthy Weapons: My main man Broccoli wields a double-hilted broadsword. With all due respect to the cover artists of both editions, I don't think that's what Mr. Jacques had in mind. I think it looked like a normal sword with a second cross guard on the blade itself. We've also got Tuna's weapon of choice, a three-pronged trident. Very nautical-core of him. Honorable mention to Dotti's carpet bag, swung about with wild abandon, as well as the hareccordion within.
Riddles: None!
Continuity Notes: Brocktree (+ Stonepaw) and Trunn are each part of their own extensive lineage of badgers and wildcats, featured in other books. We've also got a Martin the Warrior cameo (he shows up in one of Brocktree's visions.) Additionally, although Salamandastron and the Badger Lords have already been around for a long time, this book marks the beginning of I guess its "modern" age, with the founding of the Long Patrol.
Other Notes: This is perhaps the one and only Redwall book without a distinctive mouse character. Martin doesn't count, nor do the smattering of mice mentioned once in Bucko's court, as none of them have either a name or a speaking role. Squeaking role, excuse me.
Bonus Note - Homestuck: Trunn is, and I am not shitting you here, Vriska-core. He keeps his ship's stateroom full of spiders and spiderwebs, stocked with flies via the decaying bodies of people who pissed him off. Like the spider-pirate intersection is not one well-traversed in fiction, right? This is not a trope, right?? Also an uncanny coincidence that Trunn's sidekick, the crippled fox, is crippled because Trunn intentionally broke his back as a child. ?!? Alexa play X-files theme
Tapir Takes:
(1) I am a huge fan of the Brocktree-Dotti dynamic (big scary man burdened with the shadow of destiny + a sunny hyperactive little girl who seems apparently oblivious to life's darkness but can in fact dish out some serious ass-kicking.) Unfortunately, this relationship (and several others) are overshadowed by the exponentially increasing cast of characters and the forward momentum of the plot itself.
(2) Realizing for the first time that Redwall does a surprisingly good job at subverting gender roles. Not perfect, but still leagues above many movies and shows that are still coming out in this the year of our lord 2023. The girls can fight about as good as the boys, the boys can cook just like the girls, and nobody in-universe bats an eye. Some of y'all should be taking notes.
(3) Pulling out a quote in chapter 6: "If'n yore bound to take the life of a livin' thing for food, then take only wot you need. Life's too precious a thing t'be wasted." This is said by Ruff as he pulls fish out of the water for dinner. I've wondered about vegetarianism in Redwall before, and although I haven't got much to say on it now, I wanted to mark this passage for later. It's worth noting that fish are non-speaking animals in the Redwall universe.
(3.5) I'd also like to point out that the starving Horde plans to eat their captive hares once they've exhausted Salamandastron's food supply. Is this cannibalism, since the hares can talk and think same as the vermin? It's never explicitly stated in the series, but I think it's pretty clear that the differences between (talking) animals in-universe are more akin to race than species. Anyway, putting a pin in that for now.
(4) On a similar vein, I'm interested in the philosophy of Jukka and her tribe. She and her squirrels live in a patch of woods in the midst of the open grasslands, several days from the shore, but still close enough to consider themselves neighbors. In a world where nearly all non-vermin fight only to defend themselves or the weak, Jukka's squirrels are unusual, in that they fight "for profit". To them, war is a business, a means of acquiring weapons. They kill all and take no prisoners. This is all pretty similar to general vermin philosophy. Perhaps the two main differences here are attitude (vermin are cruel and disloyal even to one another, whereas the squirrels demonstrate compassion for one another and even sometimes strangers) and necessity (vermin tend to steal everything, and are unable to support themselves without exploiting others, while the squirrels really only steal for weapons, and can provide themselves with food, clothes, shelter, etc.) I'm putting a pin in this one too, because the good guy-bad guy dichotomy in Redwall deserves some major analysis, particularly once we get to Taggerung and Outcast of Redwall.
OVERALL: I enjoyed this book tremendously. Bar is high for the rest of the books, but I'm confident they'll measure up. Cheers everyone :D

[I.D. A digital watercolor painting of a global map that appears somewhat similar to Earth's, done in shades of beige. End I.D.]
The Impact Era was an incredibly tumultuous time, both in politics and in geography. Continents, once moving at a rate unnoticeable by generations, now shifted and buckled at a rate fast enough to be observed with the naked eye. Oceans rose. Landmasses shifted. As a result, maps from Before could no longer be used.
Mapmaking in the now is an incredibly complex art. A prospective mapmaker must consult fuerñ'ima, traders, and searats (if living on a coast) to determine accurate geography. Though the land is much more stable now, and their rate of movement has slowed to Before times (with the exception of places like the city previously known as the City of Angels), occasional shifts do occur, and maps must be updated frequently. Global maps, like the one shown above, are rarely used in day-to-day life, and are likely to be extremely inaccurate in terms of coastline. The bottom landmass is pure speculation, as most searats refuse to go down that far, and most information about it is hearsay.

Finished Triss! The second half is stronger then the first half for the most part, but it continued to have the issue of way too many got danged characters. I did forget about the throwaway line in the second to last chapter about Grubbage the searat joining (????) Triss’s gang to take them to Riftguard; at least, the Abbot says he’s very fond of him. We don’t see him again after that line, but it’s nice to know he seemed to have gotten a happier ending then his fellows.
I wonder how intentional the parallels between Triss and Martin are or if I’m just reading too deeply into the story? I really wish the narrative had leaned on it more, because the only thing keeping Triss from being a really great main character is just lack of screen time. Like Martin, she’s the child of a master swordsman, she was an escaped slave, was arch enemies with a royal princess/queen, and her best friend was killed. Triss arguably has more in common with Martin then ANY other wielder of his sword.
