MAGA media figures are preparing their audiences to believe that the upcoming presidential debate on CNN will be unfairly biased against Donald Trump.  While Trump has already begun saying that the June 27 debate will be rigged against him, right-wing media attacks escalated this week after an interview with Trump campaign spokesperson Karoline Leavitt was cut off on CNN’s This Morning when she refused to stop attacking network anchor Jake Tapper. Right-wing media seized on the incident as supposed evidence that the CNN debate will be unfair, and some called for Trump to cancel the debate if the network does not officially apologize.

Right-wing media had a meltdown over CNN’s Kasie Hunt cutting off Trump spokesliar Karoline Leavitt on Monday’s edition of CNN This Morning.

Hello! I absolutely love your blog, everything from your festival recounts to animation analysis and programming (one of tumblr's recommended posts was the one where you made your own rasteriser, and I liked your attitude in what I've read so much that I'm gonna attempt to conquer my 3-year-long grudge against using opengl during college and do something similar now that I'm a bit older and have no deadlines :D).

But anyway, I have 2 questions (sorry if there's easily accessible answers, tumblr search is not helping): 1. During your animation nights, does the screen stay black while everyone watches their own video while you provide commentary? I haven't caught any yet but maybe someday! And 2. do you have any youtube channels or just one-off video essays that you like that also cover animation/directors? Or, even programming lol.

For the Animation Nights, I just stream the video over Twitch from local sources on my computer, typically by playing the video in mpv and recording it in OBS. This is obviously not ideal from a video quality perspective, but it's the easiest way to watch video in sync without making everyone download files in advance. Then we all chat in the Twitch chat box (in large part to crack stupid jokes, it's not that highbrow lmao). I've gotten away with it so far!

As for youtube channels, I can recommend...

anime production/history (i.e. sakuga fandom)

SteveM is likely the most sakuga-fan affiliated anituber. He makes long, well-researched and in-depth videos on anime history, usually themed around a particular director or studio.

Pyramid Inu might be my fave anituber - very thoughtful analysis of Gundam, obscure mecha anime and oldschool BL and similar topics. tremendously soothing voice too.

The Canipa Effect does excellent deep dives into the production of specific shows, both western and anime. I appreciate the respect he gives to the Korean animators of shows like AtlA in particular!

Sean Bires's 2013 presentation on sakuga is pretty foundational to this whole subcultural niche, and a great place to get an introduction to the major animator names to know and significant points in the history of anime. unfortunately a couple of the segments got slapped down by copyright but the rest holds up!

animation theory (for animators and aspirants)

I'm going to focus here on resources that are relevant to animation in general, and 2D animation. if I was going to list every Blender channel we'd be here all week :p

New Frame Plus is one of the best channels out there for game animation, describing in tightly edited videos how animation principles work in a game context and analysing the animation of various games. highly recommend

Videogame Animation Study is similar, examining the animation of specific games in detail

the 'twelve principles of animation' (defined by Disney's Ollie Johnston and Frank Thomas) remain the standard approach to animation pedagogy; there are various videos on them, but Alan Becker (of Animator vs Animation) has quite a popular series. I haven't actually watched these but many people swear by them! Dermot O'Connor expands the list to 21. Note that some of the terminology can be a little inconsistent between different animators - c.f. 'secondary motion'...

Dong Chang is an animator at Studio NUT, who produces a lot of fantastic, succinct videos on standard techniques in the anime industry, timesheet notations, etc. etc. Studio Bulldog, a small anime studio, are a good complement; they focus more on douga than genga and are generally a bit more traditional.

programming

big topic here, I'm going to focus on game dev and tech art since that's my field. but also some general compsci stuff that's neat

SimonDev - graphics programmer with a bunch of AAA experience, fantastic explanations of advanced optimisations and some of the more counterintuitive aspects of rendering

Acerola - graphics programmer who makes very detailed guides to a variety of effects with a very rapid and funny 'guy that has seen monogatari' editing style. When he's good, he's really good. His video on water is probably the best one I've seen (though I can recommend a couple of others).

TodePond - the most charming, musical videos about recursion and cellular automata you've ever seen. less programming tutorial and more art in themselves.

Ben Eater - known for his breadboard computer series, a fantastic demonstration of how to go from logic gates up to the 6502 with actual hardware. worth watching just for how clean he puts the wires on his breadboards like goddamn man

Sebastian Lague, Useless Game Dev - both do 'coding adventure' style videos where they spend a few weeks on some project and then document it on Youtube, resulting in a huge library of videos about all sorts of fascinating techniques. great to dive into

Freya Holmér - creator of the 'shapes' library, makes videos on mathematical programming, with gorgeously animated vector graphics. Her video on splines is a particular treat.

There are definitely many more channels I can recommend on these subjects, but I'll need to dig into my history a bit - unfortunately I need to rush out right now, but hopefully that should be good to be getting going with!

31 Days Idol Challenge - Oliver Riedel

Day 29: At Award Ceremony

One thing I really like about photos of Rammstein from award ceremonies, is how they dress. I love how they just seem to all put on whatever they feel like, so that the more or less always have at least one 'odd man out'.

My photo of choice is this group shot from 1998 Echo Awards, because I really like how Oliver went with a choker. Photo by Axel Kirschof.

I feel like it's appropriate to add a passage from Flake's book Heute hat die Welt Geburtstag (It's the World's Birthday Today), where he wrote about when the band got nominated for their first Echo Award. It is such a good example of "six inexperienced East Germans entering the celebrity circus":

Beforehand we had long conversations about what we should wear. We definitely wanted to all wear the same thing so that people would see we were a single entity. Since this was the first time we'd been invited, we got there on time. On time meant two hours too early. When we walked down the red carpet, there was of course not the slightest reaction from the audience, which wasn't bad, however. The only person who recognized us was the security guard for Die Toten Hosen, who were also nominated and of course actually received an award. We attached ourselves to Nena's manager, whom we knew from the industry tour. We stood around in the lobby with him for hours and were horribly thirsty. Then the ceremony finally started and we thought it was all very exciting. Otto Waalkes was sitting in front of us. I stared at the back of his head the whole time. I thought back to how, when I was a kid, I would go over to our neighbor's place just to watch the Otto Show. Every single gag got rehashed all over school the next day, and I didn't want to be left out. And now I could practically touch him. I was so excited my palms were sweating. All the nominees were introduced with a short film. When they finally showed our film, there was absolutely no applause since of course no one knew who we were. There was only bored silence. I think Aerosmith got the prize. We realized that we'd gotten all dressed up for nothing and felt appropriately foolish. Thankfully though, there was a giant afterparty. We hadn't known about that either. There we could eat and drink as much as we wanted and didn't have to pay. We weren't the only ones who got exorbitantly drunk; those who were still there at four stayed till six. Moses Pelham broke Stefan Raab's nose. The next day, a bunch of zombies stood freezing on the train platform, waiting for the train with their Echos in their hands. Or not, in our case. Then two years later, we got the award. We stood there on stage like six bumps on a log and didn't know what to say. Under no circumstances did we want to toss out an embarrassing litany of thank yous. When it was my turn at the mic, I just talked about my vacation in Sri Lanka - I'd just gotten back two days earlier and was still overflowing with impressions. Plus, while the boring ceremony was going on, Ben Becker had been teaching us that drinking vodka mixed with tonic water was very refreshing. The trophy they handed us was I guess supposed to represent a sound wave - I mean, I don't know what an echo looks like, technically speaking - and it was pretty heavy. It was an unwieldy thing to have to hold onto at the party afterward, so I just left it sitting around somewhere.

A diferencia de sus "hermanos", el cambio de su apariencia no es por poder (Yo tengo la teoría de que Victim cambio por ser un poco más viejo). Come the morning of the anniversary of Maureen Prescott's murder, Woodsboro's just got too many mangled bodies to handle on it's under-resourced hands. Living bodies, bloodied and battered, dead bodies so much worse. The Becker girl and Orth boy hadn't yet had a funeral and Principal Himbry was still taking up space in the morgue. Small town that they were, they just weren't built for a killing spree. It was the kind of thing that happened in fast-paced L.A. not sleepy little retreats for the wealthy like Woodsboro. There's nothing to do but call in neighboring counties for additional everything, cold storage, transport, ambulances.

Had he ended up in a local bus with Woodsboro EMTs maybe it would have been different. As it was, he was just another unconscious John Doe with a surprise pulse, pulled out from the mess of the Macher farmhouse. Stu wakes up in a hospital, sore, sporting a headache the IV drugs don't put a dent in, staring down nurses who want his name. The second he's alone he rips out lines and books it outta there.

Not right away, of course. . . That'd be like asking to get caught. No, it's just a little something doodled on a long list of possibilities. Because he has nothing else to do while convalescing alone. Because idle hands are the devil's playground. Because… there's going to be a sequel some day. Revenge of the Ghostface.

For a long time he's nobody. Tim. Drew. Sean. A different forgettable single syllable in every new place he moves to— in and out while the scars are healing. Just long enough to make enough cash to amble along to the next place. Leslie helps too— after she gets the whole story out him. The Macher Cut. Bad Billy influence. In over his head. Running now from the obvious cover-up that Sid and that Gale Weathers are obviously in on together to better keep all those dirty little Prescott secrets under wraps.

Eventually there's a real name— a new one, to go with school and papers and a Montana driver's license. But he never forgets good old Archem. Sounds like Arkham. Like the town full of horrors Lovecraft wrote about. Like the Asylum that Batman fails to keep the nightmares locked up in. He likes that. Full of bats and ghosts and madness. Hadn't Billy said— we all go a little mad sometimes?

He'd sure felt like it, waking up post-op more bandaged than the Universal Mummy, dodging the question of his name from some tired looking nurse. If they didn't know that. . .

Far as he could figure after, they didn't. Not yet. There'd been too much blood, too much confusion, too many bodies. His among them— first piled with the deceased and then dug out when somebody heard him rasping for breath. John Doe #3 until claiming or confirmation could be found. A luxury he hadn't waited around to give them. Afterwards, the description of him had sounded like Stu Macher, but good old Sid had said it was impossible. She'd killed him. Not that she ever served a day for it.

He becomes a rumored mystery that the Woodsboro PD handwaves away like a stink they can't wait to be free of. The odor of their own incompetence.

Later, so much later, he changes his name one last time— so it's official on his paperwork when he graduates as Dr. Artus T. Archem.

He's learned SO MUCH in all those anatomy and psychology classes.
